How Apple Is Organized for Innovation

  • Joel M. Podolny
  • Morten T. Hansen

business planning apple music salary

When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, in 1997, it had a conventional structure for a company of its size and scope. It was divided into business units, each with its own P&L responsibilities. Believing that conventional management had stifled innovation, Jobs laid off the general managers of all the business units (in a single day), put the entire company under one P&L, and combined the disparate functional departments of the business units into one functional organization. Although such a structure is common for small entrepreneurial firms, Apple—remarkably—retains it today, even though the company is nearly 40 times as large in terms of revenue and far more complex than it was in 1997. In this article the authors discuss the innovation benefits and leadership challenges of Apple’s distinctive and ever-evolving organizational model in the belief that it may be useful for other companies competing in rapidly changing environments.

It’s about experts leading experts.

Idea in Brief

The challenge.

Major companies competing in many industries struggle to stay abreast of rapidly changing technologies.

One Major Cause

They are typically organized into business units, each with its own set of functions. Thus the key decision makers—the unit leaders—lack a deep understanding of all the domains that answer to them.

The Apple Model

The company is organized around functions, and expertise aligns with decision rights. Leaders are cross-functionally collaborative and deeply knowledgeable about details.

Apple is well-known for its innovations in hardware, software, and services. Thanks to them, it grew from some 8,000 employees and $7 billion in revenue in 1997, the year Steve Jobs returned, to 137,000 employees and $260 billion in revenue in 2019. Much less well-known are the organizational design and the associated leadership model that have played a crucial role in the company’s innovation success.

Apple launching ‘apple music for business’ to provide music to retail stores.

Avatar for Benjamin Mayo

Apple Music is now partnering with businesses to play music at retail stores. In a partnership with PlayNetwork, businesses can sign up to Apple Music for Business plans and get licensed music to be played in their retail locations with Apple providing human-curated playlists and even custom recommendations matched to the individual store brand.

Businesses can control the music being played using a special iPhone or iPad app . The Wall Street Journal notes the program has been piloted for a while and is now expanding to larger stores.

The consumer licensing terms in mainstream streaming services, like Apple Music or Spotify, do not include provisions for playing music in commercial locations.

The different terms (such licenses cost more money per stream) mean that businesses need to make deals with special providers to get legal in-store music. Both Spotify and Apple have started divisions of their music services to address the retail audience.

The Journal says that the Harrods department store started using Apple Music for Business a few weeks ago.

The deal includes Apple making custom playlists  to fit the culture of the store. Harrods will be showing billboards in-store that promote the Apple Music service to customers. Harrods will get an affiliate commission if the signs lead to free trial signups.

How to know when to choose a music manager.

Founder & CEO of Clonefluence, Inc. and Cloned gg, helping thousands grow their online presence with networking tactics.

Understanding the opportune moment to bring a manager into the fold can be an important decision for musicians navigating the complexities of the industry. As a former music manager myself, here are some of the signs I have seen over the years that can help you know when to hire a music manager, as well as how to find the best one for your music brand.

Reasons To Consider Working With A Manager

• Overwhelming Demands: As an artist's career gains momentum, the demands on their time and energy amplify. Many musicians yearn to focus on their craft without the distractions of administrative tasks, but the necessary tasks of managing bookings, negotiations and promotional activities alongside your creative endeavors can become overwhelming. Engaging a manager can allow you to reclaim precious time and mental bandwidth to channel your energy into honing your artistry.

• Strategic Growth Goals: If you're planning to scale your reach, expand into new markets, or secure lucrative opportunities, a manager with solid industry insights, connections and strategic acumen can become a valuable ally.

• Navigating Complex Contracts: The music industry is rife with intricate contracts and negotiations, from record deals to licensing agreements. A manager proficient in contract negotiation can safeguard an artist's interests and secure favorable terms.

Microsoft issues new warning for 70% of all windows users, mega millions ticket sold in illinois wins 560 million jackpot here s how much the winner will take home after taxes.

• Increased Industry Interest: If you are experiencing heightened industry interest from labels, promoters or brands, a manager can act as a gatekeeper, filtering through offers and identifying those aligned with your artistic vision and goals.

• Plateauing Career Growth: Despite talent and dedication, artists can find themselves plateauing in their career trajectory. This stagnation could signify a need for fresh perspectives and strategic direction. A manager can bring an external vantage point, offering insights and strategies to reignite momentum.

• Building A Professional Team: Assembling a professional team is often a pivotal step in amplifying an artist's impact. A manager typically serves as the linchpin of this team, orchestrating collaborations between agents, publicists, lawyers and other industry professionals.

• Seeking Mentorship And Guidance: I have found that mentorship and guidance are often as important as logistics and negotiations in the music industry. A seasoned manager can serve as a mentor for navigating the intricacies of the music industry, offering wisdom, support and a steady hand.

How To Determine The Right Manager For You

• Fair Split: One of the most important traits to look for in a manager is their willingness to take a fair percentage in order to be able to represent you. Anything over 25% for a manager is usually unfair, especially if you are a big artist. Remember, you will be splitting your income into many different percentages, not just between yourself and your manager.

• Work Ethic: Look for someone who can match your motivation to be successful. When you have projects, shows and collaborations as an artist, you don't want to be working with someone who will stop the flow of greatness. The relationship between you and your manager should be consistent and effective.

• Trend Awareness And Social Media Expertise: In the music industry's ever-evolving landscape, seek a manager who is knowledgeable about how to navigate the complexities of streaming algorithms, social media strategies and emerging trends. Their insights into industry dynamics should allow you to optimize your online presence, increasing your brand visibility and following.

• Trustworthiness: Ultimately, the decision to engage a manager hinges on trust. Seek someone whose vision aligns with yours, who understands your aspirations, and who respects your artistic integrity. As an artist, it is your job to research and make sure your potential manager has a good reputation online and among their peers.

In essence, the decision to hire a manager can be a strategic move toward realizing one's full potential as an artist. By heeding these indicators, trusting your instincts and looking for indicators of an effective manager, you can find and collaborate with someone capable of helping you propel your career to new heights.

What skills does a person need at big apple music.

At Big Apple Music, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  • Customer Service: Customer service is the provision of service to customers before, during and after a purchase. The perception of success of such interactions is dependent on employees "who can adjust themselves to the personality of the guest". Customer service concerns the priority an organization assigns to customer service relative to components such as product innovation and pricing. In this sense, an organization that values good customer service may spend more money in training employees than the average organization or may proactively interview customers for feedback. From the point of view of an overall sales process engineering effort, customer service plays an important role in an organization's ability to generate income and revenue. From that perspective, customer service should be included as part of an overall approach to systematic improvement. One good customer service experience can change the entire perception a customer holds towards the organization.
  • Merchandising: In the broadest sense, merchandising is any practice which contributes to the sale of products to a retail consumer. At a retail in-store level, merchandising refers to the variety of products available for sale and the display of those products in such a way that it stimulates interest and entices customers to make a purchase. In the profession of merchandising you are either employed by the store in which you work, or by an independent distributor. As a professional merchandiser, in a retail setting, you will not only know your products(I.e. coffee, juice, soda, etc.) but you will gauge other “vendors” like products as you tend to your job. Working with the store and other merchandisers, shelf space is often given or taken as need be in some locations(for some young merchandisers this is known as “war”) In retail commerce, visual display merchandising means merchandise sales using product design, selection, packaging, pricing, and display that stimulates consumers to spend more. This includes disciplines and discounting, physical presentation of products and displays, and the decisions about which products should be presented to which customers at what time.
  • Food Safety: Applying procedures during food preparation, processing, storage, and distribution to ensure consumers are safe from foodborne illnesses.
  • product quality: Product quality refers to how well a product satisfies customer needs, serves its purpose and meets industry standards. When evaluating product quality, businesses consider several key factors, including whether a product solves a problem, works efficiently or suits customers' purposes.
  • Scheduling: Scheduling is the process of arranging, controlling and optimizing work and workloads in a production process or manufacturing process.

Spotify Raises US Prices of Its Premium Plans in Margin Push

Reuters

A screen displays the logo and trading information for Spotify on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., February 6, 2024. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo

(Reuters) -Spotify raised prices for its premium plans in the United States on Monday, the latest step by the Swedish music-streaming service in its push to increase margins.

The company raised prices of its individual plan to $11.99 from $10.99 per month, duo plan to $16.99 from $14.99 and its family plan to $19.99 from $16.99 in its largest market by revenue.

Spotify has been trying to boost its margins in recent months by lowering marketing spending and through layoffs, after relying on promotions and hefty investments to drive user growth.

Shares of the company, which competes with services from Apple and Amazon.com, rose more than 4% in morning trading.

"We're increasing the price of Premium Individual so that we can continue to invest in and innovate on our product offerings and features," Spotify said in an email, which it plans to send to its subscribers in the U.S. over the next month.

Spotify's revenue in the United States grew nearly 11% to 5.23 billion euros ($5.69 billion) in 2023, according to its annual report.

The company offers an advertising-supported free service with limited features and a subscription-based paid service that gives access to all its functionality, with premium subscribers accounting for most of its revenue.

Analysts expect the streaming giant could drive further growth by offering tailored subscription plans based on consumer preferences in verticals such as music, audiobooks and podcasts.

The company's quarterly gross profit topped 1 billion euros ($1.09 billion) for the first time in April after it reined in marketing spending.

Its premium subscribers rose by 14% to 239 million and it forecast monthly active users at 631 million for the second quarter.
