5 easy end of the year speech activities - summer speech therapy resource round up post

If you’re like me- you’re literally in SLP survival mode by the time it’s May, and that means you need some EASY TO USE end of the year speech activities. It’s that time of the year when you can finally say “I have 3 IEPs left to write!” Of course, you will inevitably get 2 more unexpected reports that somehow get placed on your desk in those last few weeks, but hey- the point is, you’ve almost made it. Now is the time to finally tackle that paperwork pile, clean out your room, and finish up with your last remaining speech sessions. Since you’re likely going to be juggling schedule changes this month (hellllllo, field day), it’s great to have some options that work for those scheduling surprises.

end of the year summer speech therapy activities

Here are my top 5 easy end of the year speech activities:

  • This End of the Year Speech Therapy Activities packet is no prep, low ink, and the perfect “I don’t have time to plan” option to help you survive those last few sessions. You’ll be able to still target a wide range of language and articulation objectives, but without all the stress of trying to prep during the end of the year craziness. It’s the perfect way to wrap things up at the end of the school year.
  • I love this ice cream conservation skills resource. Your students will be motivated to see who can build the largest ice cream cone- all while working on social skills like commenting, asking questions, and changing topics. It has a fun summer theme, so you can discuss all things “summer” with your students- like camping, or making ‘smores. It’s also easy to work on some other goals, too- like articulation carryover.
  • Are your students working on following directions in speech therapy? If so, this summer following directions packet is definitely one you’ll want to check out. Your student listens to oral directions (or reads written directions) and must interpret, recall, then execute the command that contains a concept. This resource includes 82 cards that target the following concepts: inclusion (all, and, all but one), sequence (first, second, middle, last), location (top, bottom, between, next to), temporal (before, after, then, at the same time) & correlative conjunctions (both…and, either…or, neither…nor, not only… but also). If you aren’t in the mood to prep, just print and put the entire page in a binder- or you can screen share and pair with the Kami extension in teletherapy.
  • These grammar summer speech therapy worksheets are no prep. You can use them for a quick and easy activity in those last few sessions- or send them home as more practice during the summer! These worksheets target skills like pronouns, understanding sentences, plurals, past tense, subject-verb agreement, and more!
  • If your students are obsessed with magnetic wand and chips, you’ll love this Summer-Themed Language Packet for Speech Therapy . There are so many receptive and expressive language skills targeted, and this resource makes running a mixed group much easier during those last few sessions.

I hope this resource round-up gave you some ideas for EASY end of the year speech therapy activities. Send any of these resources home for home carryover with these (free!) parent homework letters .

Selecting the Perfect Craft

In our quest for the perfect end-of-the-year speech therapy craft, we considered several factors.

  • A fun craft is key to maintain engagement while addressing therapy goals.
  • It should be adaptable to suit different ages and skill levels, ensuring that all students can participate effectively.

Age Appropriateness: Our selection must resonate with our students’ interests and be appropriate for their age group.

Therapeutic Relevance: The activity must reinforce the speech and language goals we’ve targeted throughout the year.

Materials Required:

  • Construction paper
  • Markers/Crayons
  • Decorative items (stickers, glitter, etc.)
FlexibilityThe craft must allow room for customization to cater to individual speech goals.
MotivationIt must be engaging enough to keep the students motivated until the end.
ComplexityThe craft should be simple enough to not frustrate, yet challenging enough to be a great activity for skill development.

We should also ensure that we incorporate opportunities for students to practice their speech and language skills during the crafting process itself.

This could involve following multi-step directions, using descriptive language, or practicing specific speech sounds. Our crafts should be a reflections of the progress made throughout the year!

Incorporating educational themes.

When we design our end-of-the-year speech therapy craft activities, it’s essential to integrate educational themes that reflect the time of year. By incorporating elements associated with the end of the school year and the onset of summer, we make our session not only enjoyable but also enriching.

Summer Vocabulary: We can introduce summer-themed vocabulary words through our crafts. For example, while creating a paper sun, we might explore words like scorching, breezy, and sunglasses . This approach helps students to engage with language relevant to the upcoming season. If you are looking for a highly rated summer homework bundle for your students to practice articulation, language and social skills, then check out our Summer Homework Bundle!

Summer Themes: Our craft sessions often include making items like farewell cards or countdown calendars, featuring summer motifs. We choose images like the sun, beach, and ice cream, providing a platform to discuss summer activities and anticipate the excitement of the season.

School Reflections: As we craft representations of the school building or classroom scenes, we encourage students to share their favorite memories. This not only aids in storytelling skills but also ensures that our therapy aligns with the sentiments of saying goodbye to another academic year.

We believe there is lots of value in reflection, so the freebie we created prompts students to think about their favorite school year memories, and reflect on the relationships they built.

End of School Year Celebration: Crafts can be designed to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year. We might make achievement ribbons or certificates, focusing on the language of celebration and achievement—honoring the hard work our students have put in.

Check out this list of End of School Year Activities to help you celebrate!

We blend these themes seamlessly into our craft activities, creating a holistic learning environment that acknowledges the significance of the time of year, while firmly embedding speech and language goals. Through careful planning, we ensure that our end-of-the-year activities are not only fun but provide a robust platform for educational development.

Integrating Speech and Language Goals

When we create end-of-year speech therapy crafts, our main objective is to reinforce our students’ speech and language goals in an engaging manner. It’s important that the crafts specifically target areas they need to improve, such as articulation of speech sounds or vocabulary development.

Using Target Words in Speech Crafts

We use crafts as a fun and hands-on way to practice target words. Target words are chosen based on the individual language goals of our students, which might include expanding vocabulary, mastering specific speech sounds, or improving sentence structure. Here’s how we integrate these targets into our craft activities:

  • Selection of Target Words : We carefully select words that align with the speech sounds or language goals our students are working on. For example, if a student’s goal is to work on the /s/ sound, we might choose words like “snow,” “sled,” or “scarf” for a winter-themed craft.
  • Repetition in Context : As our students craft, we encourage them to say their target words multiple times. Repetition in the context of a meaningful activity helps solidify the word and its correct pronunciation.
  • Visual and Tactile Cues : Visual aids, such as pictures of the target words, can be incorporated into the crafts. We might also use tactile cues, such as textured materials, to help students connect the physical sensation of creating the craft with the speech sounds they produce.
  • Practicing Target Speech Sound : We might design a craft that allows multiple opportunities for students to practice a particular sound. If the goal is the /r/ sound, our craft might include creating a rocket or a robot, with the student practicing the sound each time they add a part to their craft.

Session Planning and Materials

As we approach the year’s end, it’s critical that our speech therapy sessions are engaging and festive. By incorporating a craft activity, we can ensure our students remain motivated while targeting speech goals. Below is a guide on how to plan these sessions and what materials we need:

Lesson Plans We always begin by outlining our lesson plans. These plans should align with the goals for each student and integrate the craft activity effectively. Here are some lesson plan Ideas and Templates!

Materials Needed:

  • Paper (various colors)
  • Safety scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • Sequins or stickers for decoration
  • Printed speech targets (words, phrases)

Steps for Integration:

  • Select a craft that correlates with speech targets.
  • Prepare a step-by-step visual guide.
  • Gather all necessary materials beforehand.

Visual Schedule Creating a visual schedule that breaks down the session into segments can facilitate a smoother transition between activities. Ensure it is placed where all students can see it. Check out this free visual schedule with directions on how to use visual schedules!

Remember, the key to a successful end-of-the-year speech therapy craft session is preparation and adaptability. By having our materials ready and a clear plan in place, we set the stage for an enjoyable and therapeutic experience for our students.

Crafts as Therapy Tools

Crafting can be an integral component of speech therapy sessions, serving as a versatile medium to reinforce language skills and facilitate engagement. We use these creative activities as both a method to assist in achieving therapeutic goals and a delightful way for children to end their sessions.

Therapeutic Crafting Techniques

Materials Selection: We carefully select materials that are safe, age-appropriate, and conducive to our speech therapy objectives. Our choices are often colorful and tactile to enhance sensory experiences.

  • Visual Aids: We incorporate visual prompts in our crafts to help children understand and remember key concepts and vocabulary.
  • Step-by-Step Instructions: Simple instructions are broken down into clear, manageable steps to support language comprehension and executive functioning skills.

Encouraging Communication: Through crafting, we stimulate dialogue by:

  • Asking open-ended questions related to the craft.
  • Encouraging discussions about colors, shapes, and procedures.
  • Promoting use of specific language structures and vocabulary during the crafting process.

The Utility of Simple Crafts

Simplicity and Efficiency: A simple craft is often the perfect way to conclude sessions. It doesn’t overwhelm the child yet functions effectively as a therapeutic tool.

  • Reinforcement of Goals: We select crafts that align with the specific objectives of speech and language therapy sessions, ensuring the activity is not only enjoyable but also therapeutically relevant.
  • Examples of Simple Crafts: Bookmarks, picture frames, and paper masks are great ideas for simple crafts that can be completed by the end of the session, providing a tangible reward for the child’s effort.

Incorporating crafts into speech therapy and language therapy sessions allows us to enrich the therapeutic experience. By doing so, we create an environment that is conducive to learning, while ensuring that each activity is purposeful and targeted to the child’s individual needs.

Tips for successfully implementing therapy crafts.

When we approach therapy crafts at the end of the year, we want to package our sessions in a nice little bundle of productivity and fun. Here are some strategies to help us achieve that:

  • Plan Ahead : We always start with a clear plan. Knowing our goals for each session helps us tailor the craft activity to meet specific therapeutic outcomes.
  • Personalize : We make the craft resonate with our client’s favorite things. Personalization increases engagement and makes the activity more meaningful.
  • Simplicity is Key : It’s not about complexity; a great idea is often a simple one. We ensure crafts are manageable to avoid frustration and facilitate a sense of accomplishment.
  • Incorporate Variety : We mix up the types of crafts to keep things fresh. This prevents our clients from growing bored with repetitive activities.
  • Focus on the Process : We emphasize that the craft itself is not the perfect way to an endpoint; it’s a tool we use for speech development. It’s about the journey, not just the finished product.
  • Encourage Creativity : While we guide our clients, we’re careful not to dominate. We foster a space where they feel free to express themselves.
  • Functional Materials : We choose materials that serve a dual purpose, such as items that require manipulation to promote fine motor skills alongside speech goals.
  • Feedback : After crafting, we discuss what we’ve made. This reflection solidifies new vocabulary and concepts.
  • Safety First : The last thing we want is an unsafe environment. We ensure all materials are age-appropriate and supervise usage closely.

Following these tips helps us close the year with activities that are both beneficial and enjoyable for our clients.

End of year activities for speech therapy

  • By Kim Lewis
  • May 16, 2022

May is not the time to get fancy with end of year speech activities. It’s a time to make it easier on yourself. The trouble is the kids are not cooperating. They seem to be overloaded with end-of-the-year fidgets and silliness. Another “typical” round of speech therapy is not going to hold their attention.

end of the year speech activities

Here are a few quick end of year activity ideas that make it easy on you and provide enough fun and novelty for your speech students to keep them engaged:

  • Special friend day: Allow students to bring a favorite stuffed animal to the speech room and let them explain what they are working on or lead their friend in practice. (Great for articulation or language goals.)
  • Show and tell: Ask students to bring a toy or object from home that they can share with you or the group. Give them 2 min to find something in your room for show and tell if you don’t want to plan ahead. (Great for language goals.)
  • Head outside: Anything you’ve done inside is lots more fun and interesting outside. (Articulation or language)
  • End-of-year party: Have your students help plan a party or try an easy cooking activity. Yes, cooking includes decorating cookies with frosting and sprinkles or stirring in a powdered drink mix. (Articulation carryover and language goals)
  • Write speech report cards/reviews: Let your students describe a typical session and weigh in on their favorite/least favorite activity of the year, then choose a 0-5 rating. You might be surprised by what they say! Older students can reflect on their own performance and progress. (Great for articulation and language)

end of the year speech activities

When you wait until the last month for these special activities you avoid the “why can’t we…?” whining about doing it again and again, and finish on a high note.

Have younger students? Me too! For these little ones who don’t take changes in routines as well, staying with the typical program is usually best. But if you feel like you need a break or change then try these:

  • Water play: You don’t need to have a pool or buckets of water. A spray bottle, a tiny amount of water in a small container, even a damp sponge is plenty of “wet” to pretend to wash or put out a fire or simply feel the difference from “dry.”
  • Put the batteries back in: The first thing I do with new toys is remove the batteries. The electronic sounds and songs seldom provide anything worthwhile from a speech or language standpoint and the extra stimulation frays my nerves. But if you feel bold, go for it!
  • Bring in your special friend : An oversized or extra cozy stuffed animal, a puppet or doll can be a fun novelty for a little one and a chance for them to show off what they’ve been working on.

end of the year speech activities

May means that many people are starting to wrap up their school year, and you're probably running on fumes. I wanted to share a few activities and end of year gifts that will hopefully make it a little easier on you!

end of the year speech activities

This mini book is a fun activity I liked to do year after year, the kids' responses always tickled me! It has 10 pages of different prompts to remember the year and what they have learned. It comes in color and b/w with a rockstar theme that is fun. It can take a couple of sessions to complete, so your planning is super easy that last week!

end of the year speech activities

Put together those summer packets together! This is a great last week together activity if you send home speech activity…there's no need for you to assemble those by yourself, especially when you have a million other things to do. Just print the copies and have your students put their packets together. This can give them some ownership and get them excited about their summer practice!

end of the year speech activities

Another thing I like to send home with my students is a little journal, they use for writing or drawing. These are super simple to make with card stock and printer paper, just fold in half and staple. You can throw in some crayons or pencils/pens, whatever your kids love. I know it doesn't sound exciting, but they LOVE these. You can have them help assemble them and then write one goal for their speech over the summer during your last session.

end of the year speech activities

For my younger kids, they like playing with these smash mats and it's fun summer practice. Plus, it's easy to find the tiny containers of play dough to send home with them if you want. You can find these mats for free in my shop HERE . It would be a great last day activity so that they know how to use them at home!

end of the year speech activities

If you're the gift giving type, I have done these two things and the kids really loved them! If you would like the tags, you can snag them for free HERE . You can hand these out and just have fun the last week…cause let's face it, by this time, everyone needs a break!

Please share!

You are awesome! I love your materials. I am inspired and will use these with my students. Thank you so much!

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play a crucial role in children's language development. One often overlooked but highly beneficial area to incorporate into speech therapy sessions is print knowledge. Understanding the importance of print knowledge can enhance therapy outcomes and foster literacy skills in children. I recently worked on a paper with some colleagues about the importance […]

End of the Year Speech & Language Therapy Activities

May 31, 2022

end of the year speech activities

Is anyone else checked out at this time of the year?!  Let’s be real, we are just as checked out as our students. We are always on the hunt for some quick, easy, no-prep activities to get us through to the end of the year, while also continuing to target our students’ goals. It’s so important to engage not only our students, but ourselves as we count down the days until summer.   Check out a few of our favorite end of the year activities :

END OF THE YEAR CONVERSATION STARTERS

Our students love when we tell them they don’t have to take out their laptops or folders.  To them, that means no work, but to us, that means time to work on some oral language skills .  Oral language is the foundation for many other skills, including writing.  End of the year conversation starters get your students talking and reflecting on their past year. You can even turn conversation starters into a writing assignment and have them write down their responses.

Some of our favorite questions to ask our students are:

  • What advice would you give to someone who will be new to your school in September?
  • Who helped you the most in school this year?  (We love when they say it was their speech and language teacher!)
  • If you could change one thing about this school, what would it be?
  • Would you want to skip a year of high school to graduate early? Why or why not?

CREATIVE WRITING

You can do so much with a picture.  Give the students a picture representing an end of the year scene and have them write about it – so easy! Use your own pictures, or have them find a picture they would like to write about.  We love using these writing strategies (listed below), and don’t forget to give them a graphic organizer to help them plan out what they want to write.

end of the year speech activities

  • 5 Senses : Have students take the perspective of a person in the photo.  Use inferencing skills and the five senses to describe the picture or scene that the person is in.
  • Unfreeze the Scene : Press play and let the picture come to life.  Infer what happened right before the picture was taken, as well as a prediction about what will happen next based off of the clues in the picture.
  • Plot Diagram : Create a story based on the picture.  Make sure to add all parts of a plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution.

SELF REFLECTION

Give students the opportunity to reflect on their speech and language sessions this past school year.  Use the feedback to help you plan goals and activities for the following school year.  Some ideas to get you started:

  • What is something the provider did for you this year that you really liked?
  • What is something the teacher could have done differently to make this year better?

end of the year speech activities

SUMMER BUCKET LIST

Whenever students come back from any break and we ask them what they did, they always respond “sleep.”  Really!? You slept the entire break?!  Have them  create a summer bucket list including things they want to experience or achieve this summer.  In September, they will hopefully be able to check some items off their bucket list.

THANK A TEACHER

We love how meaningful this activity is. Have your students choose a favorite teacher and write a handwritten note or email thanking them for all they have done.  Provide your students with guiding questions to help them express their thoughts and ideas clearly.  As a teacher, there is nothing better than receiving a thank you note from a student!

FAVORITE PHOTO

end of the year speech activities

These days, we take pictures of everything!  Have students look through their phone and choose their favorite photo from this past year.  Challenge them to create  a caption that explains the photo and why it is special to them.  They can even add fun #hashtags to go along with their favorite photo.

REFLECTIONS FROM A-Z

This is a fun activity for students to work on as a group or individually.  Have students come up with one word or a phrase that starts with each letter of the alphabet.  The words or phrases should include reflections, memories, a teacher’s name, or something they learned this past year.  Challenge your students to complete all 26 letters.

SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR NEW STUDENTS

Have students write advice or tips to share with incoming students. Create a book filled with advice for new students. Our students wish they had this advice when they first started school, wouldn’t you?  Some questions to think about:

  • What do you wish you knew when you started this school year?
  • What helped you get through the school year?
  • What did it take to pass a class?
  • How did you get involved in the school community?

DIGITAL YEARBOOK

We had so much fun creating these activities as we looked back on our own yearbooks !  Students love looking at our yearbook pictures from “back in the day.”  This is a fun activity to complete with your speech and language group to reflect on their year in school, no matter what year they are in.   Just because your students might not be seniors in high school, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get a yearbook !

Our students’ favorite activities from this resource include:

end of the year speech activities

  • Now & Then: Students will write important/memorable events that happened in the world this year and events that occurred the year they were born.
  • That was Lit: Students will write down their favorites so they can remember what the year was like.
  • Superlatives: We created our own version of superlatives.  Students can choose a superlative they think they would receive and explain why they deserve the award.  They can even add a selfie.

HI-LITER GIFT TAG

Who doesn’t love an end of the year gift ? Give them something they can use and remember you by.  Purchase a box of highlighters and attach a note that says, “ You’ve been the HI-LITE of my year! Have a BRIGHT summer! ”  Click for our FREE hi-liter tag !

These activities are sure to keep not only the students engaged, but you as well!  Leave a comment and let us know what you do at the end of the year with your students to keep them coming till the end.

Digital tools and ideas for busy slps, end of the year activities for teletherapy.

Ready or not (I'm guessing ready), the last day of school is coming and it's time to get a plan for the last week of speech therapy sessions. Of course you want to go out with a bang with a fun end-of-the-year activity to reward students for their hard week and send them off to summer break on a high note.

While in-person SLPs may plan a little party with treats and trinkets, teletherapists are probably wondering how to make the last week of speech therapy extra special. Even without the ability share share food, your final virtual sessions can still have anticipation and excitement.

Check out these ideas to give you and your students the last week of school celebration you deserve!

Create a digital scrapbook.

Maybe it's because I was once a scrapbook hobbyist, but creating a digital memory book is a fun way to tie up the year. A presentation program like Google Slides or PowerPoint works great for this.

Start with a blank presentation and insert photos that you've taken throughout the year or import them using Google Images. Using text boxes, personalize the book even more by adding moments from the past year in addition to summer plans.

A last week of school digital scrapbook activity used on a laptop in teletherapy

If your creativity is shot by this point in the year (and you just want a template that's ready to go), grab an end-of-the-year speech therapy recap activity that you can use in Google Slides or PowerPoint (or even print).

Take a virtual field trip.

Virtual field trips make for some of my favorite teletherapy sessions. If your students have specific interests or enjoyed a particular theme that you used previously in the year, here's a chance to expand on it.

Virtual field trips are pretty easy to find, thanks to Google! Just search for the type of field trip that you're looking for (you'll often end up on YouTube). Some ideas include museums, aquariums, zoos, landmarks, monuments, community buildings, and landforms. Live webcams also make for a fun way to (virtually) travel somewhere new.

In this example, a live stream from the Georgia Aquarium is being used alongside a shark-themed fill-in-the-blank story.

Hold a talent or award show.

For group speech therapy sessions, hold a mini event to recognize each student. Students can share a talent or you can present each student with an award to recognize their (serious or humorous) accomplishments.

Go on a scavenger hunt.

I'm a fan of using scavenger hunts in teletherapy any time of year, but they're also the perfect last day activity! Use summer-themed objects to build hype for the upcoming break and spark conversation about each person's plans for the upcoming break.

Play summer-themed games.

It's no secret that most students love to play games in teletherapy any chance they can get, so that would be a great way to celebrate the end of the year. Play a little of each student's favorite game or have students vote to select a game or two.

If you want to create your own game, check out Baamboozle , Kahoot! , or Jeopardy Labs . You can personalize the questions to your student groups or find generic pre-made games on those sites that fit your needs.

Games with a summer theme are another easy and fun way to finish up the year. A few ideas are...

Summer-Themed Bingo can be played in Google Slides or using a PDF.

Summer Memory is a Boom Card deck that is also full of summer vocabulary.

Summer Click It Game (Boom Cards) is a fast-paced call-out game that is great for students of all ages.

Summer Break Conversation Game will elicit tons of language about the upcoming summer break. It can be played in Google Slides or using the included PDF version.

Use other summer-themed activities.

You can also use summer-themed activities to send off students– and even target a few speech therapy goals at the same time!

Summer Speech Libs  is a digital PDF (that can also be printed). Students fill in the blanks in the story to create their own hilarious passage.

Summer Basic Concepts and Directions is a Boom Card deck that's loaded with summer vocabulary and pictures.

Summer Sounds Listening Activity is also a Boom Card activity that engages students with colorful photographs and real sounds.

Do a countdown to the end of the year.

Regardless of which activities you use, an end-of-the-year countdown is a fun addition. Grab this simple and FREE Boom Card deck (get it here on Boom ) as a visual countdown of the remaining days (or weeks) of school or therapy until summer break.

Choose from these end of the year teletherapy activities to make each student's last session unique and memorable. If you choose to, don't forget to share about summer speech therapy homework with your students, too!

There are social pragmatic skills that are learned from participating in a party.  A carefully planned platter of cheese and crackers and a pitcher of water or juice works well for teaching basic table manners. Prepare just enough to make it around the table.  Of course you need to check about allergies before doing this. I would still have some in reserve for the unexpected to happen.

Some students may not have much experienced with a sit down meal in a group.  I remember one particular social group  that needed a script to follow on serving. They didn’t think about looking ahead to see the amount of portions on the plate and helped themselves to multiple servings.  They needed to be schooled about looking ahead to make sure there was enough for everyone.  They may also need to be schooled  about asking politely  for the drink, using please and thankyou, and asking the next person if they would like some.

If you have worked on conversation skills in the past, it is a good place to see the culmination of skills;  introducing a topic, staying on topic, exiting a topic, and including everyone.

I find icy parties are also a good therapy tool for the end of the year.  My early language learners enjoy following directions for the treat.  The syrup is economical and available in a sugar-free form for my student with medical restrictions on sugar.  I have an icy machine but you may be able to uses a blender.  I  found I needed to keep in control of the bottles for proper portion control.

I like this party even better than a popcorn party   because it is the easiest to clean up.  Usually it is just wiping the table. We have an ice cube maker in the staff refrigerator so I only need to get a few syrup bottles and bring my icy maker, plastic spoons and cups.  The smaller clear cups actually work the best because you can make layers of color and watch them blend.  You can work on a lot of descriptive vocabulary with an icy party.
