Summary of To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel that centres around the Finch family and is told through the perspective of Jean (nicknamed Scout), within the town of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus, Jean’s father, is a prominent lawyer and the family lives relatively comfortably despite the impacts of the Great Depression.

Scout, her brother Jem and their friend Dill spend the summer together where Dill eventually becomes fascinated by the Radley’s house where Boo Radley, a mysterious and ghostly figure that is the topic of much speculation and stories for the children of Maycomb .

Scout and Jem find gifts in the knothole of a tree on the Radley property, but Nathan Radley chases the children off the property and eventually seals up the knothole. When a fire breaks out, Jem tells Atticus that Boo is caused it.

Analysed Textual Examples Preview

The climax of the novel arrives when Atticus agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a Black man who has been accused of raping a white woman. As a result, Scout and Jem get bullied by other children in their conservative, racist town.

At a pivotal moment, Mrs Dubose, the neighbour of the Finch family, harasses the children and Jem lashes out by destroying her garden.

As punishment, Atticus tells Jem to read to Mrs Dubose every day, explaining to the children that she is addicted to morphine and trying to overcome her addiction. Thus, despite the children’s initial indignation, Atticus teaches them an important lesson in empathy and perspective. 

When Tom Robinson’s trial begins, he is held in the local courthouse where a group of people gather planning to lynch him. Atticus confronts the group the night before the trial, where Jem and Scout sneak out of the house to join him.

Recognising one of the men, Scout gently asks him how his son is doing, unknowingly shaming him and causing the group the disperse. 

To Kill a Mockingbird - Trial Scene

At the trial, the siblings choose to sit with the town’s Black citizens as Atticus presents clear evidence that Mayella and Bob Ewell are lying about the rape.

Atticus demonstrates that the injuries on Mayella’s face are wounds from Bob when he found her with Tom. However, despite the convincing evidence indicating Tom’s innocence, the all-white jury convicts him. 

Tom is killed later on when he tries to escape prison. Additionally, despite his success at the trial, Bob Ewell feels that he has been made a fool and takes revenge.

First, he harasses Tom’s widow before finally attacking Jem and Scout as they walk home from a party. However, the children are saved by Boo Radley who fatally stabs Ewell during the struggle.

Boo carries an injured Jem home and Atticus insists that Ewell tripped over a tree root and fell on his knife to protect Boo.  The novel ends with Scout walking Boo home and reflecting on the events of the novel and the complexities of humanity. 

Key Characters in To Kill a Mockingbird

Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch is the main character and we first met her when she is 6 years old, although it is narrated by an older Scout who is reflecting and looking back on her life. Through her, we learn about the town, her family and what it was like to live in the early 1930s during the Great Depression and the racial tensions that existed during that time.  
Atticus Finch Atticus Finch is a single father in To Kill a Mockingbird who is appointed as the defence lawyer for a Black man who is accused of raping a White woman. Throughout the novel, Atticus teaches the children about empathy and how to view situations from different people’s perspectives instead of judging them harshly. 
Jem Finch Jem Finch is Scout’s older brother who looks up to their father a lot. As an older brother, Jem accompanies Scout for a lot of her adventures and it is evident that the two are close. Being older, we watch Jem mature and often understand issues that Scout still does not. 
Tom Robinson Tom Robinson is the Black man who Atticus defends during the rape trial. During the trial, there is compelling evidence that Tom is innocent and that the Ewells falsely accused him of rape. Despite this, Tom Robinson is found guilty due to the jury’s racial prejudice. 
Boo Radley Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley is the Finch’s mysterious neighbour which the children in the town often speculate and make up scary stories about him. While he was a teenager, Boo was part of a gang of boys who caused trouble in Maycomb by drinking and gambling. As a result of this, he was locked in his home for many years and not allowed out. However, he has a soft spot for the children, leaving them gifts in the knothole of a tree and saving Jem when he is attacked by Bob Ewell.

Mockingbird In “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the symbolic significance of the mockingbird resonates deeply. It represents innocence and goodness . Atticus Finch’s advice to his children, Scout and Jem, to never harm a mockingbird metaphorically extends beyond the bird itself. The innocent characters like Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are likened to mockingbirds, as they bring no harm but are subjected to cruelty and injustice due to societal prejudices .
The Radley Place The ominous Radley house and its reclusive occupants, particularly Boo Radley, symbolise the fear of the unknown . This is quite a long quote from To Kill a Mockingbird, so remember when you’re actually writing up your analysis for your essay, you don’t actually need to include the complete quote — just excerpts.

Step 2: Identify your technique(s)

Ensure that the technique you choose for your quote supports your analysis or helps you to build your argument.  

To enhance your response, you want to discuss techniques that have a lot more depth — you should keep an eye out for any literary techniques such as metaphors, similes and motifs!

For the above quote, there is repetition, cumulative listing, inclusive language and allusion. 

Step 3: Write the analysis

When writing the analysis, focus on the effect of the technique and how it supports your argument. In this case, we are going to analyse how the quote addresses the theme of racial prejudices. 

The opening of “we know all men are not created equal” subverts the American declaration of independence , as Atticus utilises cumulative listing to demonstrate all the ways in which men and women are not equal.

However, he also reminds the jury during this trial that the law is a “way in this country in which all men have been created equal”, alluding to the American Declaration of Independence and the core values of the nation . Analysis for this quote may look like: 

Atticus, aware that the jury is likely to find Tom Robinson guilty despite strong evidence of his innocence due to the racial prejudices the White jury is likely to hold tries to challenge this t hrough the inclusive language of in “we know all men are not created equal”, Atticus presents the jury and the defence as being on the same side. Furthermore, the allusion to the core American values when he states “in this country there is one way all men have been created equal”, creates an appeal to both the jury’s sense of justice and core American values.

The essay retells To Kill a Mockingbird’s plot to refresh its readers on the novel’s contents. The author focuses on the literary elements in the book and how they helped to develop the story’s theme. 

The writer gives examples of these elements. Metaphors for Atticus asking Scout to put herself in someone else’s shoes to understand their point of view. Allusions for referring to Mockingbirds, alluding to innocent people. Foreshadowing for Atticus telling his daughter to resist the urge to fight, followed by Scout being unable to control her anger.

On the other hand, Scout and Jem have many parental figures they learned from, such as their father, Atticus, nanny Calpurnia, and family friend Miss Maudie.

Much of the action is an examination of the different values white people and black people place on race and class. The children uncover through their experiences the ugliness associated with ignorance and prejudice. After her experience, Scout appreciates more about what Atticus tries to teach her when he says to understand a person closely, don't just look at their shoes or their pocketbooks but to consider things from their point of view. In Donna Conk's visiting neighbor, he does not only extend a hand of welcome but shares his life, home, and passion with his kids and teaches them life's important lessons. At the end of the story, it is less important who wins the battle between innocence and social injustice; the journey towards maturity that Jem and Scout take. So one morning, when Jem returns home from school safe and soundly holding his sister's hand. The coming of age aspect of the story is the action and reaction upon race and social class issues by the growing children who are on the outside but who are also part of that very society.

From the time that the term 'coming of age' was coined, it has been an exploring theme in every area of literature. Authors have explored an array of topics such as personal development, race, class, and gender during a person's growth into an adult. What makes the process of maturing into an adult a recurring topic is the conflict involved in reaching this point in life. During a person's growth, they deal with numerous ideas, values, and relationships. Coming into contact with these subject matters can help a person reach a point of self-realization and wisdom. During youth, people are usually innocent and ignorant. These years are crucial in order for them to further develop wisdom, understanding, morals, responsibility, and empathy. From not knowing a great amount about the world around them, through the process of personal development, they gain a great deal of knowledge about the outside world. Since humans are social creatures, it only seems right that an increase in knowledge in one area would lead to an increase in the other. This understanding of the world is what broadens a young person's perspective. A great emotional weight falls upon maturing people when they are forced to make life-altering decisions. In literature, people see other people face these issues and truths about the world. Through these psychological trials, readers see what occurs physically and mentally with characters in the novel. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee creates a portrait of the journey of a young girl growing up during the racially charged 1930s in Maycomb County in Alabama. In this body of work, the protagonist, Scout Finch, develops as she becomes more knowledgeable about her new surroundings and what she feels is right. The author portrays this young girl with a strong sense of confidence and stability. Her character enables the young girl protagonists to survive her harsh and trying times. The story's growing girl truly is the epitome of coming-of-age conflicts because of her diverse issues. It is through Scout's maturing that we understand these important truths about life. This book is a perfect example of the recurrence of this literary theme over time. The observer can see constant evidence of a strong set of character traits involving toward maturity and insight. In the beginning of the book, Scout is simply a tall tomboy growing up innocently, with no real idea about society and their way of thinking. She attends school and lives her life the way she sees fit. But as the day of judgment comes for Maycomb County, when people will face hard truths that are hidden underneath their community, Scout witnesses such extreme cases of racism and crime. It is through the trial of a black man, accused of raping a white woman, that we see Scout mature into a person who understands the racial relations of people all around her. This racial conflict is a major part in the novel and through the repercussions of this trial, Scout and her brother see pure evil living within the hearts and souls of some of their neighbors who voted to discriminate against them. As we see this effect the two children, Scout learns how to hold or bottle up what she sees in her heart.

3.1. Development of Characters

(Scout Finch) Jean Louise’s quote about the changes in Jem and how he is different, in one way, is an example of critical evaluation. In this quote, Scout explains how Jem and herself grew more distinct as time wore on and how Jem clearly sees more than she does. It is also an example of the coming-of-age theme in the novel. “Jem, how can you hate Hitler so bad and then turn around and be ugly about folks right at home-” (To Kill a Mockingbird, 132). This quote from Jean Louise also states how Jem changed; he began to see the world through different eyes after the court trial and took more notice than he used to. The topic of the coming-of-age theme constantly comes up in the dialogue of the children. “Well, in your case, the law remains rigid. So, to avoid being called merely a girl, you will have to wait until you break out of your tomboy ways” (To Kill a Mockingbird, 58). This quote relates to one which asks if girls are better than boys in chapter four, concerning how Aunt Alexandra feels the children should be raised and who should do it. (Dill) When Dill kisses and is kissed by Scout, he admits he doesn’t know what love is; it is an example of critical evaluation in a character. Innocence, in a child in that era, is a good thing, but to have an understanding of situations and innocence makes it negative. Dill experiences loss of innocence as an example of puberty, he begins to act mature and feel like an adult, “…he stood in the corner of the room. When he completed a picture, Dill would turn on the mattress and talk about people he said lived in his eyes only. He did this in a quiet voice, pea can-wea-ers, in groups, bunches, and rows” (To Kill a Mockingbird, 149). The tone of voice is not happiness but deep thoughts about life and its aspects, however immature they may be. D.A. Callaway comments on one of his views of loss of innocence. “The novel presents questions about innocence and how it works for or against individuals in certain situations” (53). When Dill eats a bug, he is trying to impress Jem that he is better than Jem. The two older kids bet Dill that he won’t dare to. Dill’s response was, “Sure am, I got all his supper in my belly” (To Kill a Mockingbird, 9).

4. Analysis of Coming of Age Quotes in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'

In 'To Kill a Mockingbird', a lot of coming of age is shown in the character Jeremy Finch, also known as Jem. Most of the quotes in the book show his coming of age. However, it is important to understand the process of growth in life by the few people who have had a life-altering incident. Some people know how to speak out for themselves, cope, and adapt to life as the need arises. There are also those who are taken with open arms, even when adapting happens unconsciously, and sometimes it is applied to the wrong people or circumstances. Jem, on the other hand, found his life-illuminating experience in an incident that showed him how ugly the world and people could be, and helped him understand his father to the fullest. Signs like "That's body damage, that very nice man did" express his innocence and responsibility in a traumatic incident in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Jeremy Finch also had his first taste of understanding and responsibility. In the novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee, Jeremy realizes how people don't show the evident truth as well as the very dark world inside, and shows that he grows up more than others in the book. Healing is something many people have to undergo in the world. It's the idea of understanding and helping to the best of the abilities that people have in the world. In the quote, "Bad language is a stage all children go through, and it dies with time when they learn they're not attracting any attention with it..." Jem Finch shows these successes. This expresses a change in the character of Jem. Not only does he become less of an attention seeker, but he also learns about people's true colors in life through events throughout the story. He learns about how corrupt and racist their town is, what kind of person their father actually is in real life, and why he teaches them the things he does in life. These lessons learned were a large part of Jem's coming of age in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee.

4.1. Scout's Innocence and Maturity

One of the most important factors that allows the reader to discern the coming of age in the novel is the change in Scout's narration. The novel is narrated from Scout's perspective, who is a 6-year-old girl at the commencement of the story. She is also a particularly perceptive child despite her underprivileged upbringing, as shown by her unique ability to understand complex discussions she overhears. Scout gains knowledge and self-understanding through her experiences. In the beginning of the novel, it becomes apparent that Scout's perspectives and opinions are those of an ignorant child, and there are many instances in which she misunderstands things. It is evident throughout the novel that her intelligence increases immensely because of her continuing experiences. In return, her understanding and observation skills make the reader aware of the fast roughness of her childhood. Throughout the novel, Scout uses her observations and actions related to other characters to help dissipate Arthur Radley's prejudice labels as she matures, and generate accurate apt traits and characteristics of others. Scout is the same as everyone else when she is a young child. She only focuses on the rumors, stories, racial concepts, and comments ridiculing Arthur instead of realizing that he is not what he is being depicted as. Additionally, the maturing Scout influences the reader's developing urge for her to maintain this newfound truth she perceives and live harmoniously with others without judging. In spite of experiencing racial prejudices personally, Jem and Scout both ignore race when interacting with Dill. Furthermore, Scout and Jem have not been affected by the social viewpoints on improper gender relationships.

5. Conclusion

In conclusion, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is seen as a bildungsroman by many, and for good reason. It follows the characters of Dill, Jem, and Scout during a time when they grow up quickly. The social situation is partly to blame for this, and some of that blame lies within their father's job. Atticus is the lawyer for Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, and he is the man who tries to teach his children through his example and through lectures how to be mature, strong adults. The quotes "Growing up is never easy. You hold on to things that were. You wonder what’s to come. But that night, I think we knew it was time to let you come in the front door" and "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand" show how Atticus is trying to give his children the tools to become mature through their day-to-day lives. Through characters that display a sense of maturity, come of age, and advice from friends and family, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' can be considered a paean to childhood, as Harper Lee shows readers the freedom that all of us once knew and wishes we could regain. The text can apply to characters of all ages, where lessons learned are not bound by the character’s age. The text challenges young and old, male and female, all cultures, and religions to be more empathetic and altruistic and has created a hero in Atticus who is someone with a very high moral standard yet never tries to stand out. He shows that humanity has the potential to be better. In a society that often shows immaturity and injustice, the coming of age lessons in the text are needed just as much today as they were when it was first published.
