📚 Step 3: Chevening Scholarship Networking Essay

Hi friends,

Our journey towards securing the prestigious Chevening Scholarship continues, and we're now on Step 3 of our six-part series in the Chevening Scholarship Essay Writing Guide.

Part 1: Crafting an Award-Winning Networking Essay

The Networking essay is your opportunity to showcase your ability to connect, collaborate, and engage with a diverse network of individuals. Here are some tips and an outline to help you write an award-winning Networking essay:

Tips for Writing a Networking Essay:

Outline: You should follow the standard rule of writing an essay.

Introduction

Start with a Captivating Anecdote: Begin your essay with an introduction paragraph that introduces the whole point of the paragraph, whether it is about leadership, networking, etc.

Provide examples in the Body : Add a real-life example that illustrates your networking prowess. Showcase a memorable interaction or collaboration that highlights your effective networking skills that have brought a change or something positive.

Highlight Diversity: Emphasize the diversity of your network. Discuss connections with people from various backgrounds, cultures, and professions. Diversity shows your ability to bridge gaps and work effectively with a wide range of individuals. It is good to show that your networks involve, professionals, experts, and politicians (if possible), Academics (such as professors, writers, researchers, alumni, or students), and volunteers (such as community, social, etc.).

Impactful Connections: Share stories of how your network has helped you achieve your goals or make a positive impact in your community or field of study. It is better to use the STAR method to write your examples. Provide concrete examples of how your connections have opened doors or provided valuable insights. To learn more about the STAR method click here .

Demonstrate Reciprocity: Networking is a two-way street. Describe how you've contributed to your network by providing support, mentorship, or assistance to others. Please do not write examples about the things you got or achieved through your networks .

Conclusion: Summarize your leadership journey and its significance.

Seek Feedback: Don't hesitate to ask your friends, mentors, or colleagues to review your essays. Their perspectives can provide valuable insights. You can book consultation sessions with me for one hour or more at www.sirathaidary.com or you can submit your application for review on the website.

Four Essay Topics

networking essay for chevening

Leadership and Influence

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Using the methods explained above (STAR AND SMART Approach), ensure that you speak on the times you have depicted leadership traits, the leadership positions you have occupied and the times you have displayed a position of influence. These can range from managerial positions, leadership in organizations (NGO's included), or in your day-to-day life. In addition, you can touch on what leadership ambitions you have and how this ties back to your community.

It is important to ensure that the examples are impact-driven and not only for self-gain.

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Writing your networking essay is primarily about showing clear examples of the relationships you have built, how they were established, and how you have managed to maintain them. In addition, highlight how these said relationships have been instrumental in your personal development and the work that you do. Ensure that you are able to glean from every example the skill acquired and how these skills will be useful to you in the future as a possible Chevening scholar. This essay, in essence, is to show that you have the ability to use the opportunities given to you in a tangible and impactful manner.

Career Plan

Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer-term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. - Question as per Chevening Website

This essay provides an opportunity for you to layout an immediate 2-year plan, and a 5 to 10-year plan. Your plans need to be attainable and should speak to your ambitions as laid out in your career plan. The most important tip for when writing out your career plan, is to ensure that when you touch on your professional experience, it not be written as though it is a Curriculum Vitae but rather speaking on impact, journey, and career trajectory. You too are welcome to link your journey thus far, to how this informs your next career move, namely pursuing a masters degree. You should depict an understanding of what you want to do in the future, how this is tangibly attainable, and what your ambitions are long term.

Studying in the UK

Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Do not duplicate your career essay in this essay, however, you can link the information. You will also be required to list the three universities you will be applying to, the name of the courses at the said universities, and why you chose the particular university.

Tip: Depending on which course you intend to study, google the top-performing universities in the said field to inform your university choice. Then ensure that the universities you would like to attend are Chevening partner universities, before finalizing your list of your three chosen universities.

Bonus: I have asked three scholars who have managed to successfully be chosen for Chevening before to assist with proofreading 3 prospective scholars essays before submission. Kindly note that these will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. This available to a total of 9 prospective scholars and no more. Only the 9 successful prospective scholars will be contacted. If you are not contacted, unfortunately, the 9 spots were already taken.

To get your essays proofread - please fill in the form at the link here .

“Relationship-building and shared learning” Chevening Essay Sample 1

As inherently social beings, the ability to forge and sustain relationships is fundamental to our humanity and a cornerstone of professional success. My own experiences have underscored that robust and meaningful networks not only unlock a plethora of opportunities and broaden my knowledge base but also enhance my empathy towards diverse perspectives. By delving into people’s histories and honing my skills as an active listener, I’ve cultivated a knack for initiating and nurturing connections at both personal and professional levels.

This relational approach was instrumental during my tenure at the Peatland Restoration Agency, where collaboration with colleagues and external experts, including researchers, was pivotal in developing an early warning system for peat fires in Indonesia. The project demanded intensive collaboration, translating complex mathematical models from academic research into a functional, automated system for stakeholders. My interactions led to a partnership with an experienced engineer who provided invaluable insights into platform automation—a prime example of mutual learning. Field visits to peatland areas for system validation further enriched my understanding, merging practical experience with theoretical knowledge. The successful integration of our platform with national government systems, which I spearheaded, is a testament to the power of collaborative relationships in achieving significant outcomes that extend beyond individual projects to broader company and community benefits.

I firmly believe in the golden rule of interpersonal conduct: treat others as you wish to be treated. This principle has been a guiding light in fostering solid, trustworthy, and enduring connections throughout my career. In an era dominated by the Internet of Things and virtual connectivity, I maintain that face-to-face interactions retain unparalleled value and impact. Armed with these convictions, I am poised to fully engage with and contribute to the diverse and multicultural Chevening network.

Ultimately, my goal is to leverage the knowledge, networks, and skills acquired during my studies in the UK to not only advance my career but also to drive Indonesia’s development forward. I am committed to leaving a positive and enduring legacy that reflects the values and opportunities embodied by the Chevening community.

“Relationship-building and shared learning” Chevening Essay Example 2

I believe that building a strong network is crucial for professional success, regardless of the career that one is in. From my own experience, I have discovered that a solid and expansive network is invaluable as it provides insight into different trends in the professional world and gives you insider information on job vacancies. Moreover, there is so much one can learn just by interacting with people in different fields. I, for one, have learned so much from medical professionals whom I have networked with, the knowledge that has allowed me to take care better of my health by way of new nutritional choices I have made as well as preventative measures I have adopted against potential lifestyle diseases such as diabetes.

After all, knowledge is power, and one of the best ways of gaining knowledge is simply by interacting with people who are more knowledgeable than you. Social media networking has proven to be one of the most effective ways of building and maintaining relationships. I read somewhere that ‘Social networks represent the digital reflection of what humans do: we connect and share.’ This is undeniable since social media has become the new way of forging relationships and sharing information. I love social media because it’s the first step towards discovering professionals in the fastest, most convenient, and most affordable way.

LinkedIn, in particular, has been such an indispensable platform that has allowed me to connect with professionals from my field and other professions as well. Understanding how the LinkedIn algorithm works and how to use SEO on LinkedIn has been priceless in helping me to build precious connections with professionals within and outside of my field from all over the world. I am very proactive on LinkedIn, making sure to comment on posts or respond to comments on my posts, ensuring that I add value as much as I can. When I finally meet these connections in person, it is much easier for me to pick up from our online conversations and reference my previous communications with them. Even Facebook has been a great networking platform for me. Despite its reputation as strictly for social engagements, I have discovered that some Facebook groups are very professional and have provided me with the opportunity to meet new professionals and learn new things. I have also had the pleasure of adding value and gaining from others.

Other than social media, I do also enjoy face-to-face networking events. For example, the NIC Bank End Year Party has been a great avenue where I have been fortunate enough to create and nurture lasting relationships. During this party, I have made concerted efforts to meet colleagues I rarely get to engage with during the year and even learn of various happenings in the company that I otherwise would not have been privy to.

jago beasiswa End Year Party has been a great avenue

I believe good relationships will connect with people who are going where you are. My earlier understanding of networking was my first carrier as Management Trainee in a National Company. This program is designed for one year to prepare future leaders of corporate. During one year of training, I got a lot of experience, working with many divisions when On the Job Training (OJT) in one of the company’s branches and involved in daily operations, finished project assignments, and presented all activities in front of management at the end of the program. During the program, I learned how to run operational activities in a corporate, conducive place to build connections in the workplace.

Currently, I am working in a company still under the construction phase. As a newly established company, my main tasks are setting up the workflow, designing business processes, creating Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) and Working Instruction (WI) in my department, and designing a financial reporting format. I mostly used my previous professional network to get more information on how to develop a new system and deal with third parties. Also, from my previous colleagues, I got a contact link from the government for fulfilling a legal permit and extended license. I remember when I went to the Ministry of Investment office to register the “Master List” (one of the investment facilities from the Indonesia Government to obtain exemptions from Import Duty, Value Added Tax, and Income Taxes on Imported Goods) project for my company, my connection from the previous workmate help me opened access to a person in charge directly. As a result, I have a direct connection to the person handling “Master List”, and they guide me on how to process it in the system. Then, I got the “Master List” fast and smoothly. I do not need to pay an independent agent for an intermediary or waste my time in my trial for entry into the system. My job becomes effective and sure to comply with government policy.

Another moment in my previous workplace, I ever elected to be part of the Indonesia delegation in Global Enterprise Resource Planning (GERP) training held by Group Global in Seoul, South Korea. Joining the international event was a great moment. I was able to connect and engage with participants from other countries. In breakthrough season, we have small discussions, and each member should share unique activities or ongoing projects that also impact the corporate. I share how I struggle to visit customers in a remote area and how to implement a delivery system to many islands. It was a great forum and moment to do best practices when we were back in the organization.

I firmly believe that these experiences will allow me to explore my ability to support Chevening goals and objectives. I could explore more communication with different characters and backgrounds with tremendous alumni. I believe I can contribute to volunteering events like becoming a partner in transformational leadership for future collaboration with local universities that was done and being a regular event by Chevening Alumni Association Indonesia (CAAI) programs.

During the course of your studies here at Southern Cross University you will be required to prepare many written assessments. These will take several forms including scientific reports, essays, literature reviews, laboratory reports and project proposals. All of these require specific skills in research, writing, and presentation, and you will generally be advised of the different requirements by the individual Unit Assessor. Despite this variety, there are some general principles which can be applied to nearly all forms of written work.

As Chevening Scholarship results are announced, you may find that you have not received the news you were hoping for, and in this case will no doubt wonder where you might have gone wrong in your application – after all, you’ll want to review your application ahead of reapplying with even stronger essays when applications reopen soon!

Chevening uses independent Reading Committees to assess all eligible applications, and this year, they assessed over 53,000 eligible Chevening Scholarship applications for 2020/2021 intake. Based on their collective feedback, we have highlighted some of the most common reasons applications were not scored as highly as they could have been, and what applicants can do to improve their essays for the future.

Leadership and influence

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.

  • The best scoring applicants demonstrated clear examples of leadership and influencing with concrete results.

Weaknesses:

  • Very few applicants were able to combine successful leadership qualities with evidence.
  • Some applicants focussed on leadership examples from their early academic experiences, even their school experiences, rather than examples from their recent or current professional experience which may have provided more relevant examples of leadership ability.
  • A significant number seemed to have assumed that occupying a particular position or role was in itself sufficient to demonstrate leadership skills. Thus, detailed instancing of how influence was successfully gained and deployed, and the beneficial outcomes of this, was fairly rare.
  • The most common error is students continuing to define leadership rather than provide examples of their traits and linking them to the degree/post-study work plans.

General recommendations:

  • Taking more of a STAR (situation, task, action, result) approach may have helped to refine these responses.
  • Applicants should focus less on the collective “we” and “team” in this answer and place greater emphasis on their individual contribution, to achieve a higher score.
  • Examples required more focus in terms of exactly how they led and, more notably, what were the results of their leadership and how did that have a long-term impact on their professional development.

  • Strong applicants in this section used specific examples of their own networks, describing unique and diverse ways of maintaining networks, and discussed how they facilitate networking.
  • Many applicants scored ‘good’ as they could clearly evidence networking skills, and even the start of building networks within the current Chevening community, but few expanded on this.
  • Merely joining a social media network is relatively straightforward and quick to organise, and probably not the strongest example of relationship building skills; few applications demonstrated in specific detail how and why creating and joining these networks had proved beneficial.
  • Many of the applicants found it difficult to connect their notions of networking with clear examples of using them at work. Answers were often generic with relationships and collaboration with direct and indirect colleagues discussed, but not expanded upon to clearly show how these relationships would help the individual in the future.

Studying in the UK

Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form

  • The strongest answers had a clear focus on study outcomes with evidence of research at institution and course level.
  • The applicants who answered this question best did so by having distinct paragraphs discussing their courses.
  • Applicants frequently did not specify their chosen universities or demonstrate an awareness of key details from within their fields.
  • Applicants who had applied for three very diverse course subjects did not inspire confidence in their research into courses and were frequently unable to give clear and coherent reasons for these choices.
  • While many showed a cursory or better than cursory knowledge of their chosen course and university, often the detail given on this read like a cut-and-paste from university promotional material rather than real engagement with subject or course detail.

Career Plan

Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country.

  • The strongest responses tended to be based on an outline of specific, concrete goals, which usually therefore seemed more convincing and achievable.
  • Applicants often listed future aims in relation to their careers, and some explored realistic next steps in depth. Yet most did not give a strong rationale, which made a potential clear career path unconvincing.
  • Many applicants illustrated a desire to do a PhD in the post study section. This is ambitious and realistic, but wasn’t always a convincing career goal on its own. That is to say, it needed to be backed up with reasons why they wanted to pursue research work and how it plays a part in their longer-term ambitions.
  • Career plans were too often poorly developed and it was not possible to discern how a Chevening Scholarship would be of benefit.

It was not a coincident that I was trusted to lead alumni division in 50th Dies Natalis of [NAME OF PROGRAM], since I was known as The Event Organizer back then. This event was aimed to celebrate [NAME OF MAJOR]’s milestone within 50 years and I was in-charge to develop strategic planning for engaging alumni and strengthening their connection with [NAME OF PROGRAM] Program. In order to engage nearly 4.000 alumni in meaningful ways, my strategy was to divide my team into smaller team based on the class of alumni, since I believed that different approach was required for older and younger alumni. Younger alumni are more likely to get involved in the digital world, thus I used social media campaign as a bridge to deliver clear, creative and impactful message. While more traditional communication was applied to outreach our older alumni, such as warm phone call and personal meeting. This strategy had resulted in attendance of 75% of contacted alumni in the main event of [NAME OF EVENT].

In this event, we would also like our alumni to give back to our program by conducting sharing session. From alumni list, I identified potential guest speaker for this session and figured out ways to access them. At first, I doubted my networking skill, but then I realized that building network is less a matter of skill than of will. Not only is it useful for learning directly from individuals I approach, but also the benefits of growing my own authority are just as powerful. My approach focused on their giving on a cause and I finally managed to set an agreement with 9 alumni, exceeding our initial target of 5 alumni.

To build mutual relationship with alumni after the event had ended, I regularly shared newsletter and sent e-mail to share relevant information and resource. No matter whom I am trying to build a relationship with, I will always treat that person as a friend rather than a business contact. However, it was still beyond my expectation that right before my graduation, my current supervisor who also happened to be one of alumni that I used to approach offered first career opportunity to me. By first-hand experience, I learned that effective networking can be achieved by developing relationships with other people and providing mutual support and encouragement.

Networking is nothing without added value. When I become a Chevening scholar, I will be advanced in many ways therefore it would be my priority to give back to Chevening and society. As a scholar, my strategy will be to engage other scholars and alumni who share similar passions in energy and environment to find global solutions that can be applied locally. Utilizing support from impactful Chevening alumni network and my network (LIST OF NETWORK), I plan to initiate Energy101 class to educate youth about energy and environment. Lastly, as a Chevening Alumni, I will actively participate in Indonesian Chevening Alumni Association to strengthen relationships among the United Kingdom, alumni and scholars.

Review from Stefa Yuwiko – University of Newcastle Australia Recipient of Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship & Juris Doctor (JD) Scholarship for International Students

  • However, please remember that you need to plan your work with the basic rule of making a paragraph (i.e. main sentence, supporting sentences and example in needed)
  • Look at the keywords that are in the prompt and deserve some highlights: Chevening is looking for individuals with strong networking skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. It would be good if you can organise your ideas coherently (e.g. strong networking skills (1st paragraph), followed by engagement, influence and leading example in the next paragraph)
  • I notice that the way you write it down isn’t an academic writing. Please make sure that it is okay for you to do that.
  • I notice that you have too many passive sentences; it is always good to have more active sentences.
  • Please check spelling errors as well with regard to single/plural noun.
