Who Are UEFA & What Do They Do?

Depending on your view and experience, FIFA are either the facilitators of world football, bringing the beautiful game to billions of people around the globe, or corrupt overlords using football to further their own financial and political ambitions.

A similar pair of conclusions might be drawn about UEFA, who perform a similar function to FIFA – albeit exclusively for the European continent (and some rare exceptions, more on those later). So, while they are bestowed the power to govern European football, what is it that UEFA actually does?

What Does UEFA Stand For?

UEFA logo

What Does UEFA Do?

You could almost describe UEFA as an ‘association of associations’, given that one of its primary functions is to oversee the organisation of football in each of its (at the time of writing) 55 member countries. As well as upholding the integrity of the beautiful game in those nations, UEFA is also tasked with running the intra-continental competitions in men’s and women’s football – it’s best known is the Champions League.

But key UEFA officials haven’t always been upstanding in their upholding of these functions. An investigation into corruption at FIFA saw UEFA dragged into the scandal, with former UEFA president Michel Platini accused of accepting a payment of £1.6 million.

He and then FIFA chief, Sepp Blatter, were eventually cleared of their corruption charges, although the Frenchman did admit to receiving the sum for his ‘consultancy services’. He was banned from all football-related activity for four years.

What Competitions Does UEFA Run?

UEFA European Championship

Aside from all of their administrative functions, UEFA’s most important job is to keep their suite of club and international competitions running effectively.

The European Championship

One of their most famous tournaments is the European Championship, the quadrennial international event first played in 1960. Aside from the World Cup, this is the most prestigious prize in international football that countries from the continent play for.

Introduction of the Nations League

UEFA also oversaw the introduction of the Nations League to the international calendar in 2018. This pits countries against one another in a league-style schedule, although it has been described by some as a pointless cash grab that puts further pressure on the health and wellbeing of footballers, who barely get a rest as it is.

The Champions League

The leading club teams in Europe get a chance to pit their wits against one another via a series of UEFA-ran competitions. The Champions League is the crème de la crème – the best-performing teams from the nations boasting the highest coefficient ranking do battle for one of club football’s most prestigious trophies, and the handsome prize money that goes with it.

Europa League

The second tier of UEFA intra-continental football is the Europa League, formerly known as the UEFA Cup, while a third competition was added to the calendar in 2021 – the Europa Conference League enables more clubs to taste European football.

UEFA Super Club

Then there is the UEFA Super Club, which is – let’s be honest – another cash grab that pits the winners of the previous season’s Champions League and Europa League against one another in a game played in a neutral European country that might not otherwise see elite-level football.

With a nice monopoly on club and international football, UEFA are in a lovely position – which is why they took the moral high ground when plans for a breakaway European Super League (ESL) were revealed in 2021.

A consortium of clubs, backed by wealthy investors and equity givers, planned to quit their UEFA membership and set up their own intra-continental competition. UEFA took them to court, and that legal action – allied to the vociferous backlash of many of the clubs involved supporters – saw that original ESL concept become dead in the water. For the time being , at least.

Is UEFA Owned by FIFA?

FIFA logo

FIFA is the umbrella organisation that exists above each of these authorities, acting as the super-power that holds each of them to account in the overall aim of improving football governance and participation around the globe.

Therefore, FIFA are effectively the bosses of UEFA – although the global organisation doesn’t have the power to tell UEFA how to operate or run its competitions. Indeed, the two bodies have clashed on many topics over the years – including FIFA’s dreadful notion of holding the World Cup every two years , which would essentially render UEFA’s European Championship obsolete.

Which Countries Are UEFA Members?

FIFA confederations

In a nutshell, if a country is located in Europe and has its own football clubs, they will be a member of UEFA. Some 29 European nations were the first to gain UEFA affiliation in 1954, including the member nations of the UK, Ireland and powerhouses such as France, Spain, Italy and Germany.

Global conflict has seen new UEFA members created, such as the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, while countries that have gained independence in latter years – such as Montenegro and Kosovo – have also been admitted.

The only significant European nation without UEFA membership (currently) is Russia, who were barred from competing in the authority’s competitions in the wake of the war against Ukraine. They have since allowed the nation’s youth teams back into their tournaments, although the senior men’s and women’s teams are still suspended as of February 2024.

Countries that can be described as trans-continental, geographically speaking, such as Turkey, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, have been admitted as UEFA members, while Cyprus and Armenia – technically both in Asia – are also allowed to compete in UEFA competitions. And, in 1994, Israel were allowed to participate in UEFA competitions too, despite its home best being described as in West Asia.

Crossing and Finishing Practice:

Organisation: The practice startes with the player in the centre circle. He dribbles the ball 10 yards and then plays a quick 1-2 into player A. He then plays the ball into the corner area for player A to run onto. Player A crosses the ball in first time and the two strikers time their run and attempt to score.

Key Coaching Points: Focus on quality of passing in the build up play, quality of crosses, timing of runs from the strikers and the quality of their finishing.

Votto moves up to Dunedin Blue Jays as rehab continues

Joey Votto will suit up for the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays on Wednesday as he continues to work his back on a rehab assignment.

Votto, a six-time MLB All-Star, appeared in two games in the Florida Complex League earlier this week. He will play first base and bat second for Dunedin.

‼️Rehab Announcement‼️ Six-time All-Star Joey Votto is set to join our lineup for today’s game. Votto, on rehab from AAA-Buffalo, is scheduled to bat second and play first base. pic.twitter.com/d3bFbiGLq8

This week's action has marked Votto's first time playing since spring training, when he hit a home run in his only at bat before injuring his ankle stepping on a bat in the dugout.

The 40-year-old native of Toronto signed with the Jays in March on a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training.

Votto slashed .202/.314/.433 with 14 home runs and 38 RBI in 65 games last season with the  Cincinnati Reds  in the final year of a 10-year, $225 million deal. Prior to signing with Toronto, Votto had played his entire 17-year MLB career with Cincinnati.

UEFA Euro 2024 scores, results, highlights, standings: Germany remain perfect; Albania and Croatia draw

A goal in each half carried germany over hungary.

untitled-design-2024-06-19t170737-223.png

The tournament may only be six days old but already the Euro 2024 knockout stages has its first team with Germany booking their passage to the last 16 with a handy 2-0 win over Hungary. It may have lacked the drama of the game that came before it but that will suit Julian Nagelsmann to a tee, his side coming through an altogether greater test than they had against Scotland.

Germany's win came after perhaps the stand-out game of Euro 2024 so far, Croatia recovering after conceding early to lead Albania 2-1 only to be pegged back late on. Qazim Laci looked to have given Sylvinho's Kuqezinjtë a narrow win at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg before a late two-minute blitz from Andrej Kramaric and then a Klaus Gajsula own goal turned things Vatreni's way. However, there was still time for drama as Gjasula equalized for Albania deep into injury time and received a late booking in a big Group B result.

Scotland vs. Switzerland is still to come this Wednesday, here's everything you need to know so far from day six in Germany.

Euro 2024 scores for Wednesday

  • Croatia 2, Albania 2
  • Germany 2, Hungary 0
  • Scotland vs. Switzerland at 3 p.m. ET ( preview )

Germany 2, Hungary 0: Hosts wobble but reach last 16

It was hardly the first half shellacking that they meted out on Scotland in the Euro 2024 opener but Germany got the job done, a Jamal Musiala goal enough to take them through to the knockout stages. It might have gone rather differently on another day, from the outset Hungary were testing the German defense. Indeed the first half was bookended by the threat of Roland Sallai, who might have found the net in the opening exchanges and did just before the break, semi-automated offside technology confirming the Freiburg forward had just drifted offside.

Between those two openings came Germany's goal, Ilkay Gundogan pouncing on a mess in the box that Willi Orban ought to have dealt with and then teeing up Musiala to strike. The Bayern Munich playmaker might have had another, a fierce shot ricocheting off the side netting, but the hosts also had Manuel Neuer to thank for a bouncy save off a Dominik Szoboszlai free kick. From a tight angle, Bendeguz Bolla couldn't quite turn in the rebound.

Germany's struggles didn't ease in a second half when Barnabas Varga drifted away from Jonathan Tah to flick a cross over the bar, a chance from which he ought to have tested Neuer. Their profligacy was punished in the 67th minute, Maximilian Mittelstadt delivering a fine low cross for Gundogan to turn in. Leroy Sane's added spark off the bench nearly brought a third for Germany, who will be assured of a top-two finish if Switzerland avoid defeat later on Wednesday. Even if they were to finish third they would be guaranteed a place in the last 16.

They will be hoping for much more than just that, however. Not since 1984 has a host nation lifted the Henri Delaunay Trophy. With seven goals to their name through two games, Germany must surely figure among the contenders to do exactly that.

Croatia 2, Albania 2: Gjasula goes from villain to hero

Croatia have become synonymous over the years for their dramatic and occasionally fortunate ways of avoiding defeat at international tournaments. Vatreni regularly rely on extra time and penalties when on deep runs such as their FIFA 2018 World Cup final journey in Russia. Obviously, there are no games going beyond the regulation 90 minutes plus extra time in the group stage of UEFA Euro 2024, yet Zlatko Dalic's men found a way to play with fire regardless.

Qazim Laci was allowed to head home after just 11 minutes in Hamburg and until the final quarter of an hour, it looked as if it might be enough for Sylvinho's side who were unlucky to lose out narrowly to Italy in their opening game. Cue Andrej Kramaric with an turn and finish equalizer on 74 minutes before a Klaus Gjasula own goal two minutes late for the full Croatia international tournament experience condensed into a matter of 120 seconds or so. Unlike in previous years, though, there was a late twist in favor of Kuqezinjtë as Gjasula found himself on hand to turn home five minutes into added time before picking up a trademark booking.

74': Scores own goal to put Croatia ahead 😖 90+5': Scores equalizer to keep Albania's #Euro2024 campaign alive 🙏 Klaus Gjasula makes amends in a big way! 🇦🇱 pic.twitter.com/SeItQBxuK8 — CBS Sports Golazo ⚽️ (@CBSSportsGolazo) June 19, 2024

The result means that Croatia are now up against it to advance with a draw between Italy and Spain on Thursday possibly already putting a top-two finish out of reach for both Dalic's side and Albania. Only a win over the Azzurri could see this Croatia side advance and even that might require being one of the best third-placed sides while the winner between the Italians and La Roja could reach the round of 16 with a game to spare.

It seems to be one tournament too far for this golden generation of Croatian talent with Luka Modric suddenly looking every bit his 38 years of age and former stalwarts Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic also declining forces. It did look as if their black magic touch had not entirely deserted them, but Gjasula's late equalizer appeared to not only deny Croatia the win but also break their mental resolve at the end of another thrilling game of soccer at this Euro.

The winner of Italy vs. Spain on Thursday could be assured of a knockout round place after just two games played while any potential loser in that one would be the team to catch for Croatia and Albania. A draw in the Azzurri clash with La Roja is actually the most likely result to see both through as they will be three points clear ahead of the final games, but the task is tough for Croatia against Italy and Albania against Spain. Should one of the two be able to pull off an unexpected win in the third and final game then advancing as one of the best third-placed sides could still be on the cards but another draw is unlikely to suffice.

Germany are through, that much is certain, while Scotland will surely have been toasting their success as they ready themselves for their meeting with Switzerland later on Wednesday. Any points that Steve Clarke's side can pick up would put them in the driving seat for what is shaping up to be a battle for third place with the Magyars in Sunday's final round of games. Of course, all that could change if they beat the Swiss, who know they will guarantee their qualification with a win. Hungary will have to win their final game if they are to have any chance of qualifying. Having lost to the top two, the best they can now hope for is a third-place finish.

What happened on Tuesday

  • Turkiye 3, Georgia 1
  • Portugal 2, Czechia 1

Day 5 was a thoroughly entertaining round of games despite there only being two Group F fixtures with wins for both Turkiye and Portugal to open their campaigns. A pulsating four-goal encounter at Signal Iduna Park saw Turkiye come out on top of a game which Georgia could have quite easily drawn before going on to lose out by a two-goal margin with Mert Muldur and Arda Guler scoring goal of the Euro contenders. Elsewhere, Czechia threatened an upset when Lukas Provod opened the scoring before a late Francisco Conceicao winner after a Robin Hranac own goal and a marginal Diogo Jota offside. Turkiye and Portugal meet next so Georgia and Czechia's game before that is of even more significant importance.

Insider notes: PL clubs after McKennie

Kylian Mbappe suffers broken in France's win over Austria at UEFA Euro 2024

DUESSELDORF, Germany — France delivered a 100th victory for manager Didier Deschamps as they edged a tenacious Austria side 1-0 in their opening Group D match at Euro 2024 , but it came at a cost as talisman Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken injury on Monday.

France Football Federation president Philippe Diallo told ESPN that Mbappe will not need surgery, but will have a custom mask made for him to wear when he returns to play.

It was by no means a vintage performance and France required an own goal by Austria defender Max Wober shortly before halftime to secure the three points that put them level on three points with the Netherlands who they face next.

However, three years after bowing out of Euro 2020 in the last 16 to Switzerland on penalties, France offered enough evidence to suggest they will be able to go much deeper in Germany.

It proved a decidedly mixed night for captain Mbappe though as he was left still searching for his first goal in a European Championship after some glaring misses and to add insult to injury then went off dazed and bloodied.

"He's got a really bad nose," said Deschamps. "We'll have to wait and see, the medical staff are dealing with it. We'll have to see what's going to be done and then how long it will take. It's very bad news for us tonight.

"Obviously, the French team with or without him, this is not the same thing. I hope he can be there," added Deschamps, whose record now stands at 100 wins, 30 draws and 24 losses in his near 12 years at the helm.

Ouch 😬 Mbappé had to be treated on the field after this contact pic.twitter.com/bFfzYfPvsu — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 17, 2024

In his 80th game for Les Bleus Mbappe's wing wizardry broke Austria's resistance in the 38th minute when he dribbled past three defenders and cut back a cross the unfortunate Wober could only head past his own goalkeeper Patrick Pentz.

France will take it 🤷‍♂️ Les Bleus take the lead off an own goal 🇫🇷 pic.twitter.com/fdCSwE3NZv — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 17, 2024

But Mbappe wasted an early chance and a glorious opportunity for his labouring side in the 54th, surprising everyone in the stadium as he accelerated clean through on goal, picked his spot but guided his shot wide, responding with a wry smile.

Oh noooo, Mbappé 😵‍💫 He's gonna be thinking about this one for a while 😅 pic.twitter.com/iUJzNapYNa — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 17, 2024

Mbappe, whose missed penalty in the shootout against Switzerland three years ago condemned his side to a shock defeat, then took a shoulder to the face in the closing minutes as he tried to meet a cross into the Austria box.

He required treatment and was then booked for laying down again on the turf immediately after returning to pitch. He was immediately substituted in a chaotic ending to a match that was never pretty, but always compelling.

Austria go toe-to-toe with France

Austria coach Ralf Rangnick has promised his in-form side, with one defeat in their last 16 matches, would go toe-to-toe with France and they were as good as his word.

Their relentless high-pressing and tackling never wavered and with their red-clad fans roaring them on they were in the contest until the end of a lengthy period of stoppage time.

"All in all the French earned the win, but that we were chasing the equaliser throughout speaks for the performance of our team," Rangnick said.

Austria could even have taken the lead shortly before France scored when captain Marcel Sabitzer cleverly touched a Michael Gregoritsch cross into the path of Christoph Baumgartner whose shot was deflected wide by France keeper Mike Maignan.

The French were more dynamic after the interval with Pentz saving well from Marcus Thuram but too often the pre-tournament favourites were wasteful when in promising positions.

While Mbappe's injury cast a shadow over the victory, a huge bonus for France was the sight of 2018 World Cup winner N'Golo Kante, a surprise pick for the squad after a two-year absence, producing a majestic display at the heart of midfield.

For all their graft and possession Austria struggled to create many clear chances and more often than not it was man-of-the-match Kante who blocked their path.

"It starts well. Everything was not perfect but we have the result we wanted. There are solid foundations. We have to be more efficient," he said.

"It makes me happy to be back. Things have changed but it feels good to get back into this jersey."
