Pierpont receives funds to support aviation maintenance technology students

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - Pierpont Community and Technical College has received $5,000 to support their aviation maintenance technology program.

The funds were gifted by the family of Angelo Koukoulis to establish the Angelo Koukoulis Memorial Scholarship.

Koukoulis was a pioneer for aviation in West Virginia, school officials said, and was eventually inducted into the West Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame in 2015.

The scholarship fund will support students in Pierpont’s aviation maintenance technology program by covering the cost of required Federal Aviation Administration certification testing.

Officials with the program said they are grateful for the Koukoulis family’s contribution to the program and to aviation in West Virginia and beyond.

“This support really helps to motivate our students,” said Brad Gilbert, director of Pierpont’s aviation maintenance technology program. “Many are working full- and part-time jobs while completing their studies. Some are also supporting families. They need to be diligent at the end of their studies to pass the FAA certification exams, and generous gifts such as these go a long way to support that.”

Students in Pierpont’s two-year aviation maintenance technology program engage in hands-on learning through classroom and shop time, preparing them for careers as airframe maintenance mechanics, avionics technicians, and more. One-year certificates are also available in airframe technology and avionics. To learn more about the program, click here .

South African aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) concern, ExecuJet MRO Services South Africa, announced on Wednesday that it is on course to establish a new company record for airframe heavy maintenance checks this year. The enterprise specialises in business (also called executive) aircraft MRO services, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of renowned French aerospace group Dassault Aviation.

The new record that will be set this year will be for at least 11 airframe heavy maintenance checks. The South African company’s previous record was seven such checks in a single year.

ExecuJet MRO Services South Africa is approved for both line and heavy maintenance on the Dassault Falcon 50, Falcon 2000, Falcon 900, Falcon 7X and Falcon 8X business jets. It is additional work on Falcon-series aircraft that will allow the company to set its new record. The company’s engineers are already prepared to supply line maintenance for Dassault’s latest type, the Falcon 6X.

The South African operation is also an authorised service centre, providing both line and heavy maintenance, for Bombardier and Embraer. The heavy maintenance checks programme for this year also includes work on Bombardier Learjet 40, Learjet 60 and Challenger 600, as well as Embraer Legacy 650, aircraft. In addition, such work will also be carried out on Beechcraft King Air turboprop aircraft.

ExecuJet MRO Services South Africa is the biggest business aviation MRO operation in Africa. Its hangar, at Lanseria International Airport (north west of Johannesburg, south west of Pretoria, in Gauteng province) can accommodate up to 14 aircraft, of different sizes, at any one time. The company employs 130 people, of whom 70 are in the engineering department.

The company also has an engine workshop. This can undertake overhauls of Honeywell TPE 331 engines and major repairs on Honeywell TFE 731 engines.

Last but not least, the operation installs and upgrades avionics and satcom systems.

Thousands affected after WestJet cancels flights in anticipation of mechanics strike

670 workers poised to walk off the job as early as thursday night.

Thousands of WestJet customers are scrambling after the airline cancelled more than 30 flights ahead of a possible strike by its plane mechanics this Thursday.

In an update Wednesday afternoon, the airline said about 6,500 travellers were booked on the cancelled trips, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. WestJet said the move reduces the potential for stranded passengers and ensures the carrier can avoid abandoning aircraft in far-flung locations.

Some 670 WestJet mechanics, represented by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, are poised to walk off the job as early as Thursday evening after serving the airline with a strike notice earlier this week following months of negotiations.

The Calgary-based company has requested that the Canada Industrial Relations Board intervene with binding arbitration, which would see the labour tribunal hammer out a contract between the two sides — their first collective agreement. In the meantime, the board could bar a work stoppage, a measure WestJet is counting on as the cancellations rack up.

Union members voted overwhelmingly to reject a tentative deal last week and opposed the airline's request for arbitration this week.

Passenger protection regulations entitle customers to a full refund in the original form of payment for the cancelled trips, said Gabor Lukacs, president of the Air Passenger Rights advocacy group.

If the strike goes ahead and WestJet cannot rebook passengers within 48 hours of the original departure time, the airline must "buy passengers seats on competitor airlines — at WestJet's expense," Lukacs said, citing the Air Passenger Protection Regulations.

For trips cancelled before the possible work stoppage, he argued that the carrier must rebook customers on competitors' flights if they cannot get them on board WestJet planes within nine hours of the slated departure. The airline would also be on the hook for meals and accommodations as well as compensation — distinct from a refund — of between $400 and $1,000, depending on the length of the delay.

"If I were an affected passenger, I would give WestJet one chance to rebook me on a competitor. I would record the call/interaction. If ignored or refused, I would buy a ticket on a competitor, and then make WestJet pay for all the expenses plus the standard (passenger rights) compensation," Lukacs said.

The airline said Wednesday it will make "every effort to re-accommodate disrupted guests."

WestJet cancels dozens of flights as potential strike looms

As of Wednesday afternoon, the 31 cancellations comprised 18 for that day and 13 on Thursday. They touched cities ranging from Toronto and Vancouver to Regina and Grande Prairie, Alta.

Busy domestic routes such as Toronto-Calgary and popular leisure flights including Vancouver-Las Vegas saw cuts. But many more will be necessary if no move is made by the labour tribunal as the clock ticks down toward 7 p.m. MST on Thursday — the earliest possible strike hour.

The industrial relations board said it will be ready to "deal with these matters as expeditiously as possible."

A meeting between the parties was scheduled for Wednesday, "and the board will then determine next steps, as appropriate," spokesman Jean-Daniel Tardif said in an email.

WestJet president Diederik Pen said the airline was "immensely disheartened" to cancel trips and start parking planes after receiving the 72-hour strike notice.

"We know the situation is creating stress and uncertainty for anyone with upcoming travel plans. To our guests, the communities and businesses that rely on our service, we're truly sorry," he said in a videotaped statement Wednesday.

The contract rejected by union membership included provisions to boost take-home pay by 30 to 40 per cent in the first year, which would have made WestJet's plane mechanics the highest paid in the country, Pen claimed.

The union said Monday it opposes WestJet's request for arbitration because the process could undermine aircraft maintenance engineers' (AMEs) bid for greater contract gains.

"If adopted by the Canada Industrial Relations Board, it would utterly frustrate the AMEs' goal of reaching an industry-changing contract because arbitrators are generally driven by industry 'norms' — the same norms that have kept AMEs under the heel of management and industrial unions which favour the unskilled majority," the negotiating committee claimed in a statement Monday.

Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan said federal mediators continue to work with both parties this week.

"Mediators are at it. So things are proceeding and we're supporting them at the table where the best deals are made," he told reporters Tuesday.

CAE Inaugurates Training Center for Maintenance Technicians and Pilots

CAE has inaugurated its first Gulfstream-dedicated business aviation training center, which will be a key component to training more pilots and maintenance technicians over the coming decades.

Located near Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. headquarters in Savannah, Georgia, the new center has a capacity for up to four full-flight simulators (FFS). The first, a Gulfstream G550 FFS, began operating last January, and the second, a Gulfstream G280 FFS, will be ready for training in July.

The maintenance training program, which will include state-of-the-art virtual reality, will be offered on Gulfstream G280, G650, and G500/G600 business jets.

The Savannah facility is CAE’s fifth business aviation training center in the United States.

“Savannah has been home to Gulfstream’s worldwide headquarters for more than 50 years,” said Mark Burns , president, Gulfstream. “I am confident that CAE will reap the same great benefits we’ve received from this welcoming community and, of course, the incredible workforce we have here.”

“The inauguration of the CAE Savannah training center is a significant milestone in terms of the advanced training and customer experience we offer to Gulfstream operators, making it more convenient than ever for their pilots and maintenance technicians to train with CAE,” said Marc Parent , CAE’s president and CEO. “CAE Savannah is a showcase for innovation. Virtual reality, for example, will be used in both the theoretical and practical elements of our maintenance training program. CAE Rise will also be used on all simulators, empowering instructors with technology that delivers insights and data to enrich simulator training for pilots.”

CAE Rise uses Metrics-Based Insights (MBI) and telemetry data to show instructors objective data during live training, allowing them to focus on evaluating soft skills. The technology, which CAE has developed for both civilian and military pilot training,   also provides analytics to proactively detect, and ultimately address, emerging safety trends.

The Savannah Training Center represents another significant milestone in the growth of CAE’s business aviation training network and its commitment to helping to meet the global requirement for an additional 32,000 business aviation pilots* and 74,000 business aircraft maintenance technicians by 2032. CAE now has five centers dedicated to business aviation training in the U.S. in New Jersey, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Georgia, as well as its center in Montreal, to round out its North American presence.

Canadian airline WestJet has begun canceling some flights in anticipation of a strike by aircraft maintenance technicians, saying it wants to avoid having passengers and planes stranded if there is a walkout.

WestJet said it expected to cancel about 40 flights from Tuesday through Wednesday, affecting 6,500 passengers. By Wednesday afternoon Eastern time, the airline had canceled 20 flights, or 4% of its schedule, after canceling five flights Tuesday, according to tracking service FlightAware.

The low-fare airline said it was trying to find alternate arrangements for customers whose flights were dropped.

WestJet and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association are locked in negotiations for an initial collective-bargaining agreement covering about 680 mechanics.

Earlier this week, WestJet asked the Canadian Industrial Relations Board to order both sides into binding arbitration. The union responded by notifying the airline of its intention to strike as soon as Thursday night unless the company returned to the bargaining table this week in Calgary.

Diederik Pen, the airline’s president, said the company’s most recent contract offer would have made WestJet maintenance engineers the highest paid in Canada and raise their take-home pay 30% to 40% within a year.

The union says the airline is trying to impose a contract that its members rejected by a 97.5% vote, and that low pay is preventing WestJet from filling open jobs.

WestJet was founded in the 1990s and modeled after Southwest Airlines in the U.S. It is Canada’s second-largest airline.
