14 August Speech in Urdu

14 August Speech in English:

Respected sir and my compatriots!

Our homeland Pakistan is not like other lands of the world, which are inherited to its citizens but Pakistan is the country, for which Muslims of Combined India served their bones as bricks and their blood as water, to set the bases for Pakistan.

Only those can judge the true value of this inestimable creation who himself has participated in building this country, and sacrificed his wife, children, sisters, brothers and all his blood relations. To achieve this sacred land, millions of Muslims met martyrdom. Countless children were killed in front of their mothers and lots of families were burnt inside their houses. Many virtuous women jumped into wells and canals and costed their lives just to build up Pakistan. Countless children got orphaned and missed their parents for whole their lives.

Valleys of Pakistan are containing congruences of the paradise. Beautiful green landscapes and spacious farms are spitting the gold. We also see that we are rich of every kind of freedom and facilities but do not ever forget that in making this come true, there is part of the blood of Tipu Sultan , vision of Sir Syed and thoughts of Allama Iqbal , untiring struggles of Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and endeavors of many other companions of M. A. Jinna. And everyone was aligned to achieve a single goal – a free and independent Islamic State: Pakistan .

14 AUGUST 1947 was the auspicious day of Islamic history when Pakistan, the God-Gifted country came into being. Unity of Muslims and dedication and heartiness of Quaid e Azam were the things that paved the way of creation of this country. Hindus and Britishers deceitfully campaigned, created hindrances against the movement of Pakistan but Alhamdolillah Pakistan had to be done and It appeared on the map of the world. At that time, there was only one slogan of Muslims: Le Ke Rahen Ge Pakistan, Ban Ke Rahe Ga Pakistan .

Enemies vigorously ridiculed the demand of Quaid e Azam for a separate free land, though the demand of Pakistan was based on right, reality and truth and right finally prevails. Reality, if couldn’t get acclaimed sooner or later, it is not a reality but if it does then that reality is a REALITY. And all filthy intentions of enemies went in vain before the reality of Pakistan and today Pakistan is known as one of the great nations in the world.

My compatriots! We have to love Pakistan. We admire the founders and the dreamer and thinker of Pakistan and we also pray for martyrs who lost their lives in movement of Pakistan. Those who sacrificed their homes and families against British rulers. They didn’t care for their children and accepted the hardships of prisons. And finally when Muslims of South East Asia got the freedom, right prevailed and falsehood surrendered. And the chains of slavery collapsed!

Nature has gifted Pakistan with every kind of wealth and blessings. We have abundance of streams, rivers and lakes which are irrigating our lands. We have skillful, lusty and ambitious Pakistani youths. We have best in the world Pakistani army and war strategists. Wheat, cotton, oil and rice, everything is grown in Pakistan which is exported as well. Pakistan has rich depository of minerals such as salt, coal, kerosene oil, gypsum and zamarud stones. Research work is in progress and Insha Allah there will be a day when we will also be self-sufficient in oil as well.

Pakistan is now taking part in international affairs and willing for friendship with its neighbor countries. Pakistan is seeking trading and cultural relationships with other countries. Special settlements are being considered with Islamic countries; and Pakistan is eager to build relationships with any country that is endeavoring for peace and prosperity.

Pakistan believes in peace but still it is our duty to hold enough strength for defending our motherland. By the grace of ALLAH, Pakistan is an atomic power today. May ALLAH make every Pakistani more loving to this country.

14 august 1947 independence day speech in urdu & english.

Independence Day speech in Urdu and English is available here. Anyone can get the speech of 14th August 1947 from here. Everyone know about the day of independence. This was the day of golorious when we got our freedom. This country was established by the aim of free people those free people who can serve the nation with great devotion. Free people are those who can sacrifice the last drop of blood at the dignity of Pakistan. Any person can get the 14th August 1947 Independence Day speech in Urdu and English. This speech is providing here for everyone to aware the real words of the speech in our past. Everyone should read the speech should listen the speech of independence. No one can deny the importance of independence among us, so this is an important speech for all of us.

Alhamdulillah! 14 August 1947 is a independent day of Pakistan or we can say that Pakistan appear in 1947 from British raj. In 14 august government and private sector celebrate Independence Day. Mostly persons wear white dress and green combination of matching suit only for the peace of country. Pakistan gain  his independent day one day coming before to Indian Independence. First of all Pakistan have two territories one West Pakistan and second east Pakistan. But unfortunately in 1971 war we lost East Pakistan. Muhammad Ali Jinnah was the lawyer, politician and founder of Pakistan. Jinnah and Iqbal want to have Pakistan ‘two-nation theory’ , Muslims and Hindus have different in not only religion but also in culture, nation theories, festivals and more such activities.

The hindo-pak partition was the one of the greatest migration in history. Millions of millions Muslims leave those areas who occupied by Indian government and migrate east Pakistan and west Pakistan. Several millions refugees arrived Pakistan shortly after it independent. Some millions Muslim cannot reach their destination and massacred. Today Pakistan have more than 22 million (22 crore) population. However if Bangladesh does not untied in 1971 tragedy then we have approx 372 millions manpower.

Muslim want their own country because they knew that the British raj made Hindus more powerful in literacy, in work side. While the other hand British government didn’t given any task or a piece of verb to Muslims. So the Muslim’s leaders realized that strategy the British government wants to make Hindu more powerful than Muslims. They think Muslim want get back their territory from British colonized therefore they try to Muslims back in every argument. Muhammad Ali Jinnah join the Muslim league party and struggle many years for made an own state in which Muslims live freedomly and at last he take the Pakistan from British Raj in 14 august 1947. The only Muslim country in the world that made in the model of Islamic republic of Pakistan while the other hand other all the muslims states made over by the model of their own nation.

14th August Best Speech in Urdu

14 august speech in urdu and English Speech for Independence Day

Who knew that day. Of 14th of August, Will tell the world in a way, That both East and West, Would come to know that there stands, A country named Pakistan, A lovely place, with sacred lands. And a home for a Musalman, A Quaid’s effort, a Poet’s dream, And a struggle of a human flood, A new beginning beyond a stream, Filled with Muslim blood.

14th August is a common date like other dates of the English calender for nations but for the Pakistani nation, this date is the most remarkable day in the history of Pakistan. Pakistan came into being on 14th August according to the English calendar while according to the Islamic calendar, it was the 27th of Ramadan when Allah blessed Muslims with the pious homeland. 27th Ramadan has religious importance as the revelation of Holy Quran on Holy Prophet {P.B.U.H.} finished this month. The word “ Pakistan “ is made by combining two words “ pak “ and “ stan “. Pak means pious and stan means homeland. Therefore, the meaning of Pakistan is the homeland of pious people.

People gave sacrifices of their lives for independence because they could not follow Islam independently and could not perform their religious duties properly in sub–continent. They were punished or disturbed when they perform their religious duties. It offended Muslims but as they were a weak nation, they could not do anything.

Names of people like Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Iqbal, and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan are always written in golden words in the history of Pakistan. Muhammad Ali Jinnah is also known as Quaid-e-Azam is the real founder of Pakistan. Allama Iqbal, who excited Muslims to earn their own nationality and name in the world. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who brought Muslim nation forward and made schools and colleges for Muslims so that they may come to know how to fulfill the latest demands of the advanced age.

Pakistan came into being after the sacrifices of countless lives. Many mothers lost their sons, many wives lost their husbands and many children lost their fathers and then Pakistan came into being. People gave sacrifices of their lives so that next generations may not face any difficulty and may live a safe life.

Pakistan was got for creating an environment just as it was in the period of Hazrat Umer { R.A. } when He took rounds of the streets in darkness for becoming sure that no one is hungry. Pakistan was got for creating such an environment where ladies will come outside by covering their bodies as it is ordered in the Holy Quran. Pakistan was got for creating such an environment where males like Hazrat Hussain { R.A. } may bear who will offer prayers and read Holy Quran whether their necks may separate from their bodies.

Quaid e Azam the Father of Nation said to the people of Pakistan in his address in Ziarat that “Making of Pakistan was a difficult task; I could never have accomplished it alone. It was the Roohani Faiz of Rasul Allah(sa) that Pakistan came into Being. Now it is the responsibility of every Pakistani to make it an example of Khilafat-e-Rashida” [Ziarat, 1948].

We must celebrate 14th August as it is our independence day. We should celebrate 14th August by thanking to Allah by going to Mosques instead of celebrating this day in music parties this day. We should celebrate this day by brightening our hearts with the light of the teachings of Islam. It is not an important fact whether we lighten homes or not with lights. Its time to be practical and show our love towards our dear homeland by doing something which may bring Pakistan on the road of success without waiting for anyone who may join us.

Jinnah in His first broadcasting for the nation of Pakistan “August 15 is the birthday of the independent and sovereign state of Pakistan. It marks the fulfillment of the destiny of the Muslim nation which made great sacrifices in the past few years to have its homeland.”

Outlining the purpose of the creation of Pakistan, Quaid-i-Azam said in a speech to the officers of the Defence Service on October 11, 1947, that the establishment of Pakistan was only a “means to an end and not the end in itself. The Idea was that we should have a state in which we could live and breathe as free men and which we could develop according to our own lights and culture and where principles of Islamic social justice could find free play.”

Student says school withheld his diploma after he ‘went off-script’ during graduation speech

ALEXANDRIA, Ky. ( WXIX /Gray News) - A recent graduate in Kentucky says his high school withheld his diploma for days after he went off-script while giving a speech during a graduation ceremony.

Micah Price said he ultimately received his diploma, but it was five days after the ceremony was held.

According to Price, he submitted eight drafts of his speech to the school and was told to take out portions that focused heavily on religion.

Price said he took parts out of the final draft, but when the opportunity presented, he “went off-script” while giving the commencement speech.

One of his goals, since fifth grade, was to deliver a speech on his graduation day. But he said he also wanted to honor God.

“I prayed about it a lot,” Price said.

In eighth grade, he became a devoted Baptist.

“My lord and savior is your answer,” Price said in his speech. “He will give you the truth, the way, and the light. I must give the honor, the praise, and the glory to Jesus Christ.”

Price said he went to get the envelope with his diploma after the ceremony when a principal tapped him on the shoulder and told him he would have to talk to the school board.

“I knew it was going to be held,” Price said. “Before you do anything they tell us if you go up there and do a cartwheel or something stupid, it will get your diploma held.”

Despite knowing the consequences, Price said he had to speak from the heart.

“I simply cannot hold back what Christ has done in my life,” Price said. “He’s everything to me.”

Price said he’s joining the Air Force in July. He said the controversy over his speech and his diploma has him considering ministry work.

Representatives with the Campbell County Local School District did not immediately comment regarding the situation.

“I went against the rules. It’s my fault. I should be in trouble. I never wanted to bring hate to them or tear down the school,” Price said.

Israel's Netanyahu to address U.S. Congress soon, Johnson says

By Matt Spetalnick and Humeyra Pamuk

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Republican U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Thursday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would soon address a joint meeting of Congress amid heightened tension with President Joe Biden over the Israeli leader's handling of the war in Gaza.

Delivering a keynote speech at the Israeli embassy's annual Independence Day reception, Johnson, the top congressional Republican and a critic of the Democratic president’s Israel policy, said it would be “a strong show of support for the Israeli government in their time of greatest need.”

Such a speech is sure to further anger progressive Democrats critical of Israel's military campaign in Gaza and Biden's support for it. Netanyahu has closely aligned himself with Republicans.

The diplomatic gathering in Washington comes amid strains between Biden and Netanyahu over a U.S. push for Israel to do more to protect Palestinian civilians in the war against Hamas militants in Gaza.

The embassy gave equal billing to Democratic U.S. Representative Pete Aguilar, who shared the high-profile platform with Johnson at a more subdued event under the shadow of the Gaza war. "As Americans, we reaffirm our commitment to Israel's sovereignty," he said.

Speaking first, Johnson said to applause: "Tonight I'm happy to announce ... we will soon be hosting Prime Minister Netanyahu at the Capitol for a joint session of Congress."

Successive U.S. administration have usually sent a high-level official to the Independence Day receptions.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who in recent months has called the situation in Gaza a "humanitarian catastrophe" and has urged a ceasefire, delivered last year's keynote, mostly extolling U.S. backing for Israel.

An Israeli official said this year the embassy wanted to honor lawmakers in a bipartisan way in appreciation for congressional approval of billions of dollars in new U.S. military aid.

The reception took place on the same night as a White House state dinner for Kenyan President William Ruto, which the Israeli official said created a scheduling conflict for cabinet members.

Several less senior Biden aides were in attendance, including Derek Chollet, Secretary of State Antony Blinken's counselor.

The White House declined comment when asked whether it was consulted about the invitation to Netanyahu or whether Biden, who has denied an Oval Office meeting to the Israeli leader, might see him in Washington.

JOHNSON'S VEILED SWIPE AT BIDEN

Johnson and Aguilar both condemned the International Criminal Court prosecutor's decision this week to seek arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his defense chief, Yoav Gallant. The prosecutor also asked for warrants to capture Hamas leaders responsible for the deadly Oct. 7 cross-border attack on Israel, which triggered the Gaza war.

Johnson took a veiled swipe at Biden, saying "some leaders" have sought to withhold "vital weapons" from Israel. Biden has paused one shipment of bombs and warned he could delay others if Netanyahu carries out an all-out ground offensive in the refugee-packed city of Rafah in southern Gaza. But the flow of weapons has mostly continued.

Security was tight around the National Building Museum where the reception was held. A small group of pro-Palestinian protesters shouted "shame on you" at guests exiting the event. One person held an Israeli flag stained red to simulate blood. Another on a megaphone accused Israel of war crimes.

On Tuesday, Johnson said he was close to inviting Netanyahu, a right-wing leader who had warm relations with former President Donald Trump.

Johnson, a Trump ally, had issued Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer an ultimatum to sign a letter inviting Netanyahu or else he would only speak to the House of Representatives.

Schumer had signaled he was open to Congress hosting Netanyahu, despite declaring in March that the Israeli leader had “lost his way” and calling for new elections in Israel.

Johnson did not specify a date for Netanyahu's speech.

Addresses to Congress are a rare honor generally reserved for the closest U.S. allies.

Netanyahu has already given three speeches, most recently in 2015. That year, Republican leaders invited him without consulting Democratic then-President Barack Obama, as Netanyahu joined them in an unsuccessful bid to derail Obama's international nuclear deal with Iran.

Dozens of Democrats boycotted Netanyahu's last speech, raising the prospect that some could stay away this time.

Johnson, struggling to keep his fractious Republican House majority intact, has been a prominent voice in the U.S. political divide over Israeli policy. Politicization of the issue has intensified ahead of the November election in which Biden is running against Trump.

In contrast to past years’ gala celebrations, this year’s reception, marking the 76th anniversary of Israel’s founding, was billed as a “solidarity event.”

Israel is fighting to wipe out Hamas militants who attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and seizing 253 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Palestinian authorities say more than 35,000 people have been killed during Israel's campaign in Gaza.

UN Member States have been deploying “Blue Helmets” (or peacekeepers) since 1948, so on the occasion of the  International Day of UN Peacekeepers , marked annually on 29 May, we’re spotlighting operations over the decades, from monitoring buffer zones in Asia to escorting aid trucks into Israeli exclaves in the Middle East.

Some missions were accomplished. Others continue today. Since the Organization’s inception at the end of the Second World War, UN Member States have scrambled to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” by deploying their collective efforts to prevent the kind of utter devastation that global conflict brought to Europe, Africa, Asia and beyond, especially with a view to stepping in before tensions escalate past a point of no return.

Here’s a look at some of those efforts, from the UN’s  first ever armed emergency force to nearly a dozen active deployments around the world today:

UN Member States  authorised their first peacekeeping mission on 29 May 1948. The UN Truce Supervision Organization ( UNTSO ) was mandated to observe and assist in Palestine to maintain the Arab-Israeli ceasefire.

Its  tasks over the years were broad-ranging, from security patrols to helping vulnerable communities, including escorting food convoys in the 1950s to UN-protected Israeli exclaves in  Mount Scopus and Issawiya village in the Jerusalem area.

UN-mandated military observers were  deployed in January 1949 to observe a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, forming the nucleus of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan ( UNMOGIP ).

Both missions are still operational.

So are the blue-coloured berets and helmets as well as white UN vehicles emblazoned with blue UN logos used by UNTSO in 1948 and on every subsequent peacekeeping mission since,  according to Ask Dag , the UN  Dag Hammarskjöld Library ’s online forum for anything related to the Organization.

The Middle East is also where UN Member States deployed their  first armed peacekeeping force . The first ever  emergency special session of the General Assembly  established the force in 1956 after Egypt’s nationalisation of the Suez Canal Company had triggered France and the United Kingdom to send troops and Israeli forces to launch an attack and occupy the Sinai Peninsula.

More than 6,000 peacekeepers, including a 479-member salvage team, served in the UN Emergency Force ( UNEF ), which helped to unblock both the canal and the crisis. The mission ended in 1967.

1960s: Buffer zones and independence

To support the newly independent Republic of the Congo, the Security Council swiftly responded to the government’s request on 12 July 1960 for UN military assistance to protect it against external aggression.

Four days later, after the Council  called on Belgium to withdraw its troops and authorised military help, contingents comprising troops from several Asian and African States had their boots on the ground as part of the UN Operation in the Congo, known by its French acronym  ONUC .

The mission marked a milestone in the peacekeeping history for its broad responsibilities, vast area of operation and staff size, numbering nearly 20,000 personnel and troops at its peak before its mandate ended in 1964.

The same year, the Security Council  established the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus ( UNFICYP ) to prevent further fighting between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. But, after escalating hostilities erupted a decade later, its mandate has expanded over the years.

In the absence of a political settlement, UNFICYP and its staff of more than 1,000 remain on the island to supervise ceasefire lines, maintain a buffer zone and undertake humanitarian activities, among other things.

1970s: Strengthening post-war peace

When the Arab-Israeli war broke out in 1973, UN Member States dispatched two forces to the region. The Security Council, in  resolution 340 , immediately approved the deployment of a second UN Emergency Force, known as  UNEF II , and a year later,  established the UN Disengagement Observer Force in the Middle East ( UNDOF ).

The latter exists today, mandated to maintain the peace between Israel and Syria, with more than 2,000 active peacekeepers and personnel.

1980s: Starting ceasefires and ending colonialism

After almost eight years of war, and following intensive diplomatic efforts led by the UN Secretary-General, Iran and Iraq agreed to a ceasefire and direct talks. From 1988 to 1991, the UN Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group ( UNIIMOG ) was mandated to monitor the ceasefire’s implementation, successfully concluding its mission once confirming that both sides had withdrawn their forces, in line with internationally recognised boundaries.

The UN also continued to support countries in Africa in their bid for independence from colonial powers. From 1989 to 1991, military observers worked with the first of several UN Angola verification missions.  UNAVEM I ,  II and III had mandates spanning from election support to the successful phased withdrawal of Cuban troops, a key step towards also realising the UN Security Council’s plan for neighbouring Namibia’s independence.

Part of that effort included  deploying the UN Transition Assistance Group ( UNTAG ).  Namibia joined the UN as a Member State in 1990, the same year UNTAG completed its year-long mandate, helping with such critical efforts as helping to rehabilitate infrastructure, repatriate and resettle refugees and displaced persons alongside organising and conducting elections.

1990s: War, genocide, peace and a new command centre

Amid an escalating war in the former Yugoslavia, UN Member States  established the UN Protection Force ( UNPROFOR ), which operated in the region from 1992 to 1995. At its peak, 38,599 military personnel served in widespread areas, with a mandate that was, over the course of the conflict, enlarged to include protecting civilians in demilitarised zones and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to the newly independent Balkan States.

Leading up to historic elections in the Caribbean in 1990, assistance was provided by the UN Observer Group for the Verification of Elections in Haiti, known by its French acronym  ONUVEH . More than 70 per cent of eligible voters cast their ballots, electing Jean-Bertrand Aristide as their new President. Drawing on experience with Namibian elections the previous year, ONUVEH added an innovation by deploying UN security observers throughout the process.

In Central America, when a ceasefire agreement successfully ended 36 years of war in 1996 in Guatemala, the UN General Assembly  established the UN Mission for the Verification of Human Rights and of Compliance with the Commitments of the Comprehensive Agreement on Human Rights in Guatemala, known by its relatively concise acronym  MINUGUA .

That same year, the Security Council authorised and deployed 155 military observers and requisite medical personnel to join the effort, which was thus expanded and renamed the UN Verification Mission in Guatemala.

Originally  tasked with helping to implement the Arusha Peace Agreement shortly after it was signed in 1993, the UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda ( UNAMIR ) operated in the African nation until 1996, with an ever-changing mandate.

Renewed fighting in April 1994 led to a  genocide against the Tutsi, with around one million people killed over the course of about 100 days. The catastrophic situation on the ground led the Security Council to twice expand UNAMI R’s duties to contribute to the protection of civilians and refugees at risk by establishing secure humanitarian areas.

Up until the 1980s, the UN Department of Political Affairs ran UN peacekeeping operations. By the 1990s, more than 20 UN peacekeeping missions were in action, so the UN Secretary-General established the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) in 1992.

A year later, DPKO launched the Situation Centre to provide daily reports, monitoring and the exchange of information services between UN Headquarters in New York and UN missions worldwide. Today, there are  11 active UN peacekeeping operations , and DPKO is now called the  Department of Peace Operations .

2000s: Disarmament and demobilisation

The UN Mission in Liberia ( UNMIL ) supported the implementation of a ceasefire agreement and a monumental peace process in 2003. Part of its  mandate was to protect UN staff, facilities and civilians, support humanitarian and human rights activities and assist in national security reform, from national police training to forming a new, restructured military.

From the start, the Mission launched an ambitious and successful disarmament, demobilisation, rehabilitation and reintegration (DDRR) programme for over 40,000 combatants that has been a model for similar efforts around the world.

Today, frozen and new conflicts still pose the same challenges to the UN’s Blue Helmets on the ground around the world.

What’s it like to be a UN peacekeeper?

Helmet and flack jackets of UN peacekeepers.

More than two million men and women have served under the UN flag since 1948. UN peacekeepers can be military, police or civilians. Tragically, more than 3,500 of these men and women have lost their lives in the cause of peace.

Today’s multidimensional peacekeeping operations are called upon to go beyond  maintaining peace and security. They also:

  • Facilitate the political process
  • Protect civilians
  • Assist in the  disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of former combatants
  • Support the organisation of elections
  • Protect and promote human rights
  • Assist in restoring the rule of law

From history to controversy: 5 things to know about Memorial Day

a speech on independence day in urdu

NORFOLK, Va. — Memorial Day is supposed to be about mourning the nation’s fallen service members, but it’s come to anchor the unofficial start of summer and a long weekend of discounts on anything from mattresses to lawn mowers.

But for people such as Manuel Castañeda Jr., the day is very personal. He lost his father, a U.S. Marine who served in Vietnam, in an accident in 1966 in California while his father was training other Marines.

“It isn’t just the specials. It isn’t just the barbecue,” Castañeda told The Associated Press in a discussion about Memorial Day last year.

Castañeda also served in the Marines and Army National Guard, from which he knew men who died in combat. But he tries not to judge others who spend the holiday differently: “How can I expect them to understand the depth of what I feel when they haven’t experienced anything like that?”

Why is Memorial Day celebrated?

It’s a day of reflection and remembrance of those who died while serving in the U.S. military, according to the Congressional Research Service. The holiday is observed in part by the National Moment of Remembrance, which encourages all Americans to pause at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence.

What are the origins of Memorial Day?

The holiday stems from the American Civil War, which killed more than 600,000 service members — both Union and Confederate — between 1861 and 1865.

There’s little controversy over the first national observance of what was then called Decoration Day. It occurred May 30, 1868, after an organization of Union veterans called for decorating war graves with flowers, which were in bloom.

The practice was already widespread on a local level. Waterloo, New York, began a formal observance on May 5, 1866, and was later proclaimed to be the holiday’s birthplace.

Yet Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, traced its first observance to October 1864, according to the Library of Congress. And women in some Confederate states were decorating graves before the war’s end.

David Blight, a Yale history professor, points to May 1, 1865, when as many as 10,000 people, many of them Black, held a parade, heard speeches and dedicated the graves of Union dead in Charleston, South Carolina.

A total of 267 Union troops had died at a Confederate prison and were buried in a mass grave. After the war, members of Black churches buried them in individual graves.

“What happened in Charleston does have the right to claim to be first, if that matters,” Blight told The Associated Press in 2011 .

In 2021, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel cited the story in a Memorial Day speech in Hudson, Ohio. The ceremony’s organizers turned off his microphone because they said it wasn’t relevant to honoring the city’s veterans. The event’s organizers later resigned .

Has Memorial Day always been a source of contention?

Someone has always lamented the holiday’s drift from its original meaning.

As early as 1869, The New York Times wrote that the holiday could become “sacrilegious” and no longer “sacred” if it focuses more on pomp, dinners and oratory.

In 1871, abolitionist Frederick Douglass feared Americans were forgetting the Civil War’s impetus — enslavement — when he gave a Decoration Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery.

“We must never forget that the loyal soldiers who rest beneath this sod flung themselves between the nation and the nation’s destroyers,” Douglass said.

His concerns were well-founded, said Ben Railton, a professor of English and American studies at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. Even though roughly 180,000 Black men served in the Union Army, the holiday in many communities would essentially become “white Memorial Day,” especially after the rise of the Jim Crow South, Railton told the AP in 2023.

Meanwhile, how the day was spent — at least by the nation’s elected officials — could draw scrutiny for years after the Civil War. In the 1880s, then-President Grover Cleveland was said to have gone fishing — and “people were appalled,” Matthew Dennis, an emeritus history professor at the University of Oregon, told the AP last year.

By 1911, the Indianapolis 500 held its inaugural race on May 30, drawing 85,000 spectators. A report from The Associated Press made no mention of the holiday — or any controversy.

How has Memorial Day changed?

Dennis said Memorial Day’s potency diminished somewhat with the addition of Armistice Day, which marked World War I’s end on Nov. 11, 1918. Armistice Day became a national holiday by 1938 and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

An act of Congress changed Memorial Day from every May 30th to the last Monday in May in 1971. Dennis said the creation of the three-day weekend recognized that Memorial Day had long been transformed into a more generic remembrance of the dead, as well as a day of leisure.

In 1972, Time Magazine said the holiday had become “a three-day nationwide hootenanny that seems to have lost much of its original purpose.”

Why is Memorial Day tied to sales and travel?

Even in the 19th century, grave ceremonies were followed by leisure activities such as picnicking and foot races, Dennis said.

The holiday also evolved alongside baseball and the automobile, the five-day work week and summer vacation, according to the 2002 book “A History of Memorial Day: Unity, Discord and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

In the mid-20th century, a small number of businesses began to open defiantly on the holiday.

Once the holiday moved to Monday, “the traditional barriers against doing business began to crumble,” authors Richard Harmond and Thomas Curran wrote.

These days, Memorial Day sales and traveling are deeply woven into the nation’s muscle memory.

Jason Redman, a retired Navy SEAL who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, told the AP last year that he honors the friends he’s lost. Thirty names are tattooed on his arm “for every guy that I personally knew that died.”

He wants Americans to remember the fallen — but also to enjoy themselves, knowing lives were sacrificed to forge the holiday.
