Each course is structured in different parts which include the key vocabulary, followed by a dialogue, then a grammar lesson and finally a review. And with a range of content that spans a wide range of contexts, this app is suitable for beginners as well as intermediate learners looking to put their knowledge into practice.

There’s an app called ‘Innovative Languages’ which includes French among their other languages.

It primarily uses audio lessons but includes a fair amount of video content as well. Lessons are suitable for beginners right up to advanced levels.

The instruction not only includes listening skills but also incorporates essential vocabulary and grammar. All lesson content is downloadable and there are other features built in to the dashboard.

• Set a daily goal for yourself, so you adjust your expectations and measure your progress.

• You can favorite certain phrases you predict you’ll be using often.
• You start learning useful phrases right from the start, even if they wouldn’t be traditionally taught in a French course right from the start. For instance, in your first lesson you might learn how to say “Today is Wednesday”.

Say you’re travelling through France and will be staying there for a couple of days — you can select a tailored lesson to learn the essential words and phrases for ordering food in a restaurant, or reserving a hotel.

The app also features its community of French language learners, which will help you broaden your learning experience and reach out if you’d like to get your grammar corrected.

• The Busuu app lets you track your progress as you learn and set targets to help you improve.
• Learning offline is a possibility if you have a premium subscription.
• The French language learning community helps you to interact with fluent French speakers and gain clarity on confusing elements of French grammar or vocabulary.
• Unfortunately, if you would like to branch out and study a range of other languages, there is only a small selection of 12 to choose from.
• Busuu might not be as engaging as some of the other available French language apps.

Pimsleur is based on an audio-based system which promises to eliminate noise and distractions to teach you French.

Using the principle of anticipation, graduated interval recall, context and limited amounts of information at a time, Pimsleur teaches you French with the guidance of a tutor in English, so you’ll get something similar to a traditional classroom experience with native speakers to provide examples.

• Before starting your free test, you’re introduced to Dr. Pimleur’s principles of memory and language learning, which can help you create a habit and become more consistent. For example, you’re invited to complete only one audio lesson per day, not more, which sounds quite doable.
• Some new words are broken down into parts, so you can perfect your pronunciation syllable by syllable and sound natural from the beginning.
• If you enjoy the guidance and explanations in English from a teacher who can lead you little by little, you’ll enjoy Pimsleur’s courses. You’re taken step by step through a dialogue and asked to repeat expressions. Shortly after that, you’re unexpectedly asked to recall expressions, which is a smart strategy.
• Something I have personally enjoyed is that intonation is also taught. This is especially important in a language like French, in which asking most questions and making a statement differ in nothing except intonation. ( Tienes dinero. - Tienes dinero ?)
• Vocabulary review options include reading, using flashcards, a quiz, a “Speak Easy” option (to practice rhythm, intonation and pronunciation) and my personal favorite: a speed round in which you match expressions as quickly as you can, forcing you to recall under pressure.
• Pimsleur only allows you to test one free lesson, which is not enough, especially if you’re not an absolute beginner.
• If you’re bothered by the guidance or explanations of a teacher in English separating you from full immersion, this is not the product for you.
• Because the course requires speaking out loud and repeating words as you hear them, it is not the best option if you’re learning French in public places or during small breaks, like returning home from work.
• You’ll have to make quite the investment if you want to purchase the entire course (all levels) straight away.
• Recent reviews claim the app is not working well technically, with frequent crashes and difficulty downloading lessons.

• The HelloTalk app lacks a lesson structure which is beneficial if you’re just beginning to learn the French language.

The design of the app is simple and pleasant on the eye, which is always a plus in a market that praises overcrowded apps.

• There’s a placement test at the beginning, so all materials adapt to your needs.
• The app determines your level based on how many words you’d be able to understand in any given text. For instance, after taking the placement test, the app might tell you you’d understand about 33% of any given text in French. The goal? 100%, of course! This is exciting because it gives you a much clearer, specific reference. It’s much easier to decide you’re ready to face real-world French after knowing you can understand about 80% of a text than if somebody tells you you’re a “B2 level”.
• Lingvist provides decks with different themes (love, environment, food, body parts…) so you can get a wide range of vocabulary and decide what topics mean the most to you.
• You can create your own decks.

FluentU lets you keep track of all the vocabulary and phrases you learn and, along the way, you’ll receive tailored recommendations for videos that you might find interesting. This further supports your leaning.

• The recordings and videos spoken by French natives help you to dive into the culture and focus on a wide range of contexts.
• FluentU is challenging and supports your learning with the option of using subtitles for each video.

• Content library feels a little unorganized.*
• It can take a little while to be able to use the platform with all of its features comfortably, as there’s a lot to learn.

Here, you can meet people from all over the world and agree to help each other improve. You start by looking for speakers from your favorite French-speaking country and get in touch through writing.

The app is quite easy to use and provides huge value for free.

• Opportunity to practice French without having to pay for expensive lessons.
• Define interesting topics or prompts to get the conversation started.
• Chat includes a “correct” feature which compares what you wrote with your partner’s correction. You are also invited to correct your partner’s writing.
• You can define your learning preferences to find your best match.
• Complaints about Tandem resembling a dating app are common.
• It’s a little difficult to find a French conversation partner who is willing and available to commit to consistent practice. Quite often, a friendly conversation in a chat will not lead to much afterwards.
• The very nature of French language exchange means you’ll have to spend time teaching the other person your language, rather than focusing 100% on your own development (like you would with a teacher or coach).

Not only is Duolingo fun, it is an engaging app that can assist your French learning with useful grammatical exercises. From breaking down essential French vocabulary with usage examples in each unit and sub-unit to helping you learn new adjectives, verb tenses and nouns, Duolingo makes learning the French language simpler and faster.

A key advantage of using Duolingo to learn French is that it lets you track your daily progress and evaluate the intensity of your daily learning. You can set your daily goals to motivate yourself and aim to learn new words and phrases at a constant rate each day.

The Duolingo team is constantly coming up with additional content for their French language course, and with its online community, language learners can get answers to their grammatical queries and widen their French language learning experience.

• The content and lessons are frequently updated, giving you an enriched French learning experience.
• Each topic is categorized and various subjects are included, providing you with a range of vocabulary.
• The majority of Duolingo’s features are practically free to use.
• You can access the Duolingo French learning community to clarify any grammatical confusion.

SpeakEasy is the perfect phrasebook app specifically created to facilitate the process of learning French vocabulary. Covering a selection of the crucial French phrases for topics like eating in restaurants and ordering food, getting around the city, shopping in France and sightseeing, this app was designed with English-speakers in mind.

Also included in this app are various audio recordings of a native French speaker. With phrases such as “I have a reservation” and “How much does it cost”, you’ll soon be able to make yourself understood when communicating with native speakers in a wide range of contexts.

• The SpeakEasy app is ideal if you are just beginning to learn some French words and phrases or are learning the language just to travel.
• The recordings make it easy for you to practice your pronunciation of French words and phrases.
• The app is quite limited and many of the basic phrases can be found in other free apps.
• SpeakEasy is meant to be a phrasebook. This means it’s not suitable or ideal for upper-intermediate or advanced French language learners.
• There are no structured lessons, meaning developing writing skills is difficult with SpeakEasy.

Beelinguapp

Beelinguapp is a clean, user-friendly app that focuses on reading French.

How to find a good app for learning French

Selecting the right French app is a challenge, but bear in mind two things:

• The app you choose is generally determined by how you learn and what your aims are .
• You can always opt for more than one app.

If your goal is to travel through France for a couple of days, you’re less likely to need a comprehensive app that offers in-depth, structured lessons. Learn some common French phrases and you’re good to go.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to gain knowledge of the French culture, ways, customs and language, you might need an app that offers more detail.

Selecting more than one app can be useful as each app serves a different purpose. In the beginning, you might find that a free app is sufficient.

But as your journey to learning French continues, you’ll probably want to invest in a premium app along with a quality French textbook .

Learning a language from your phone has become so common nowadays as we spend a lot of time stuck to our screens. There are so many language learning apps and platforms to choose from and that can be quickly overwhelming. In this flood, which one to choose? What is the best learning app for French? Is that Duolingo , Busuu , Mondly , Lingopie , or another one?

Let’s learn about the 7 best French learning apps with free or paid options that you should consider as main or supplemental resources to your studies, depending on your learning objectives.

#1 Duolingo: Learn French for free

When talking about language learning apps on Facebook groups or Reddit, the first that pops up is Duolingo , a free learning app that teaches you various languages like French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Russian, popular languages as well as less popular.

Duolingo is a playful platform, making you play with languages. It has many levels and lessons where you can have fun and stop being afraid of a new language and freely experiment. Being very similar to a game makes it pretty addictive for users, reducing the risk of desertion, counting with a lot of levels to keep users entertained. It’s also very friendly, levels move on very slowly so you don’t get overwhelmed with information, getting badged all along the process making it fun.

On the free version, ads are served but are still ok to learn with it.

I really like their podcasts and short stories that are beginner-friendly.

#2 Mondly the best high tech app for learning languages

If you’re looking for an entertaining way to learn French Mondly can be a good option. You can take daily lessons in a “game-like” way and this is very productive if you get bored easily.

Mondly has very attractive features to keep you interested and has a lot of modes such as augmented reality (AR) and Virtual reality (VR). There is also Mondly for kids and Mondly for business. That makes Mondly one of the unique apps that serves kids and adults learning interests.

Mondly is great if you want to grow your vocabulary, speaking, and listening skills. Beyond being just a flashcard memorizing system, it has a unique feature that allows you to have guided conversations with a chatbot. And what I liked the most, you can even record your voice and listened to the whole conversation after. That gives you real experience of how your speaking looks like when you speak French.

Like Duolingo and other language apps, the competitive element is present. This means that Mondly rewards your efforts on a leaderboard, and this can keep you motivated to achieve goals if you have a competitive mind.

Accessing Mondly is free but gives you limited features. The premium version would be ideal if you want to learn seriously. #3 Busuu: best app for learning French in context

Busuu is a language learning platform where you can learn online up to 12 languages like English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, French, and more. The classes are accessible through Busuu’s app on your smartphone, or directly on your web browser.

Busuu offers 4 types of lessons: Complete French lessons suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners, French for travel, pronunciation, and Business lessons.

With Busuu, you learn French vocabulary in context, not just learning words and be left without knowing how to use them in a sentence. Words are explained and followed with real-life examples that you can use in everyday conversations.

Busuu is ideal if you´re looking for a little daily practice. If you´re looking for something more complete it’s better to pay the premium subscription that offers a lot more. For instance, You have the option to learn offline if you need to; you can get an official certificate and benefit from a community of native speakers who can help correct or give feedback on your work.

In my point of view, this is a big distinctive advantage compared to other language apps.

Rocket Languages is another great language-learning app and website for French language. They also offer popular languages like Spanish and German, …

Rocket languages offers audio-based lessons which cover most of the learning components such as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, French culture. They have a speech recognition system to help you practice your speaking. The learning is based on real-life conversations from native French speakers which sets you on an immersive path.

They offer a free trial that yo u can get here if you want to test the course before any commitment. And they regularly offer promo codes that I share on my page Language discounts. #5 Italki app ideal for conversational classes

Italki is a very popular language-learning platform for taking conversational lessons. You can download the app on your phone and start browsing the list of French teachers. It is also available from your desktop.

Once you find the right tutor, you can book classes at your convenient time. The classes are held online and can be on Italki classroom which is the company’s video conferencing tool or on any other communication software like Zoom, Skype, Google Meet,…

The good thing about Italki is that you can customize your whole experience. You can request for specific topics of interest to be discussed with the teacher. It’s also an affordable option as you can find lessons as low as 6 to 7$ per hour ant that adapt to your budget.

Flexibility is always an option, you can set lessons whenever you want 24/7 and for the desired duration (30 mins, 45 mins, …).

There is also a community for language learners that is for free, so if you are on a budget you can think of finding a language exchange partner for free.

#6 Rosetta Stones: old but still good

Difficult to list language learning apps without talking about Rosetta Stone , one of the oldest and most famous language-learning programs . It is an end-to-end language solution where learners can select their own learning paths and lessons focused on their unique interests. Rosetta Stone offers broad content areas addressing everyday situations, culture, business,...

It is a good option if you’re new to the language, and looking for an immersive solution because it challenges you to work only in French, making you think differently.

The downside is its cost which is quite expensive. But luckily you can have a free trial to check whether the program is the best suit for you.

#7 Drops a newbie app but great for developing your vocabulary

Drops apps is a recent learning app developed by Kahoot. It is a really good platform if you want to learn how to communicate your ideas in the short term as it teaches you useful vocabulary. This makes the app very effective. Among the good things about Drops you can note :

It has a completely free version that gives you access to all the content. That can be useful for learning while commuting or during your break time. However, your study time is limited to 5 mins every 10 hours, so that gives you a total of 10 mins learning per day.

Drops has a really cool and aesthetic platform , that makes everything a lot easier and really immersive.

It’s perfect for travelers, if you´re planning on going to another country where your native language is not used there, Drops can help you a lot to communicate.

What to keep in mind

Most of these apps have their own specificity and are the best learning French apps for these reasons. The choice of one or another will actually depend on what you are looking for, what competencies you want to develop, and your budget. Some of them are free with limited options but offer premium versions that are paid but still affordable.

Language apps like Duolingo , Mondly , Busuu , or Drops are not meant to be an exclusive learning method. They are great as supplemental resources, which means that you can get the maximum of them paired with other methods like learning French with live native teachers on Italki , Lingoda , or in-person in a language school.

With modern technology constantly and rapidly evolving, learning French means you might well imagine that there are now some killer French language apps available that can turbo-charge your language learning. And that since French is one of the most popular languages, you should be spoilt for choice.

Well, yes and no. Nowadays, there are far more French learning apps that can add real value to your learning than even just a few years ago. But, there are still also plenty of duds you’ll want to avoid.

12 Of The Best French Learning Apps

So to help you sort the wheat from the chaff and discover the hits while avoiding the misses, in this post I’ll talk about finding the best French learning apps – as well as giving you 12 of my own top recommendations.

If you’re looking for a French app that will help you increase your all-round knowledge of French, Busuu is a good option.

It includes an extensive suite of lessons that teach you a new language in a natural way while giving you ample opportunity to practise.

If you pay for the premium version, you also get lots of useful extras – like additional study materials and a personalised study plan.

One of the best things about this app for learning French is that when you complete a written exercise, other learners from the Busuu community can give you feedback on your work, pointing out mistakes and helping you improve. In return, you can also help other Busuu users by correcting their exercises in English or any other languages you know.

One of the biggest challenges when learning French is mastering all the French verb conjugations . And although the best way to do this is through constant use and practice, you can also give yourself a head start by using a French learning app like Conjuu.

This app will help you master all the different verb endings of the various conjugations in French, which you can then perfect through use in more natural situations.

#3 French Pod101

FrenchPod 101 is an app and website dedicated to language learning that you can use to access a wide-ranging library of French lessons for all levels. The app is subscription-based, but there are lots of different options, including several very affordable plans.

I particularly recommend the mobile subscription, which gives you access to all the lessons on your smartphone as well as allows you to listen to the dialogue tracks, listen line by line, access the lesson expansions, and more.

#4 Linguistica

Linguistica is the updated app that accompanies the popular News in Slow French podcast.

As you can guess, the lessons are based on topical news stories that are read out at a slower speed so learners can understand.

The app provides all the news stories for you to listen to with the accompanying text. More advanced words appear in red, and you just tap on each one for the English translation.

This is an ideal app for working on both your listening and your vocabulary. And it will help you become more confident when speaking about current affairs in French.

Level: Elementary or lower-intermediate and above Good for: Listening and vocabulary, especially current affairs-related vocabulary

#5 Frantastique

Frantastique gives you one new lesson to work on each day, presenting new language in the form of cute animated videos and then testing you on the language you have seen. This is a good app to supplement other learning materials. It provides content for French listening practice, helps build vocabulary, and trains your grammar through exercises.

After each lesson, you then receive the results of the exercises along with information on anything you got wrong. The main downside is that you have to pay for this app. There are several levels of subscription, but none of them is cheap. However, there is the option of a free trial, so you can see if you like it before you decide to sign up.

Level: All levels Good for: All-round French practice and daily exposure to the language

For anyone who wants to work on their fluency or pronunciation, Falou is one of the French learning apps worth checking out.

It’s based on listening to and taking part in dialogues, with the app giving you feedback on the accuracy of your French pronunciation.

Since the dialogues deal with a range of different situations, it’s a great way to build your confidence in using the kind of language you’re likely to need in everyday life.

You have to pay for this app. But you get full access for the first three days to see if it works for you before you decide whether to subscribe.

Level: All levels Good for: Speaking and pronunciation

Unuhi is a reading and listening app aimed at younger learners.

It consists of stories in French and English (other languages are available, you just choose your native language and the one you want to learn). And you can either read the story or listen to it being read to you.

The main downside is that apart from the translation of the text on each page, there are no grammar notes and no interactive learning tools like clickable vocabulary or a word bank for new words.

The first book is free, and you then simply buy each new book or bundle you are interested in.

Level: Lower levels, aimed at younger children Goof for: Listening and reading practice; ideal for younger learners

#8 Dr French

For many learners, grammar is the hardest part of learning French, especially via French apps. And part of the problem is that often, there is so much to cover that you don’t know where to start. In that case, Dr French could be the app you need.

It offers you help on different aspects of French grammar, giving you clear explanations as well as exercises that let you practise what you’ve covered.

The app is organised in such a way that allows you to search for specific areas you need to focus on. Or you can simply work through the whole app in sequence.

There is a one-time payment to unlock the whole app. But it isn’t especially expensive, making it worth considering if you need help with grammar.

Level: All levels, especially lower levels Good for: Grammar explanations and exercises

#9 LyricsTraining

Learning a language through your favourite songs can be a fun and effective way of progressing. And if you're looking for a more efficient and structured way of doing it, you’ll love Lyrics Training .

You choose your level and the style of music you like, and the app finds songs for you to listen to while reading the lyrics and filling in the blanks as the song plays.

This is not an all-round learning app. But it will help build your vocabulary while also giving you exposure to French music culture.

Level: All levels, but better for elementary/lower-intermediate and above Good for: Vocab, listening, and modern French culture

This app is particularly good since it presents new language in context through stories and other texts. You can listen to the texts or read them. And you can also click on words you don’t know for the translation and an explanation.

This is exactly the kind of app that can genuinely help you improve your French since it gives you access to a broad range of languages in many contexts and at exactly the right level for your abilities.

You have to pay for the full version. But there is an extensive library of free material. So you can use it even if you don’t want to spend any money.

Level: All levels Good for: All-round language exposure, but especially good for listening, reading and vocabulary

No matter how many hours you spend studying French, you won’t be able to speak it unless you practise. And that’s where language exchange apps like Tandem come in.

They allow you to find language partners to practise with from around the world, giving you the opportunity to speak French every day and making using French a part of your daily life.

Tandem is one of the best for this, and you can use it to practise by typing at first, followed by voice messages. And when you’re more confident, you can even try voice or video calls.

Level: Elementary and above Good for: Practising typing, speaking, reading, and listening with native speakers via text, voice message, and voice/video call

#12 HelloTalk

HelloTalk is similar to Tandem but also includes a few additional features. For example, as well as allowing you to find native speakers to practise with, you can also post ‘moments’ accompanied by whatever you want to write in French.

People will then ‘like’ your moments as well as give you feedback and corrections for whatever you wrote. You can then return the favour by correcting other people’s posts in English (or any other languages you know).

What To Look For In The Best French Apps & What To Avoid

When we learn any language, we progress by seeing the language in as broad a range of contexts as possible. When we see a new word, expression, structure or grammatical form in context, this helps us understand its use. And it also helps fix it in our long-term memory.

However, many French language apps – the majority, in fact – are no more than glorified word lists. They might have pretty visuals, and they might be gamified and fun to use. (That's the app villain at work!). But if they're based on nothing more than memorising lists of isolated words with no context, they have little value since this is not how our brains learn a language.

This means you should avoid word list-style apps, and instead, you should favour French learning apps that present language in the form of audio recordings, texts for reading, dialogues, or other authentic situations so that the content is always encountered in a natural context.

Another vital consideration is finding apps for learning French that give you language input at just the right level. To maximise your learning efficiency, you need material that is hard enough to push you to improve while not being so hard that you don’t understand any of what you are reading or listening to. If you understand about 80%, that’s just about perfect.

Needless to say, this is the ultimate guide to checking and learning new words, idioms and structures. One of the most reputable French dictionaries has put its entire content online for free .

Your students can simply type in the word they want to search and the results are displayed at a glance. The Larousse website includes a French-French dictionary, a French thesaurus, a dictionary of antonyms, an encyclopedia and bilingual dictionaries.

What else could you ask for? Oh, this: a conjugations checker, forums, games and a French cooking dictionary—all of which you’ll find on Larousse!

Taking a step back from the traditional textbook approach, FluentU encourages users to learn the French language in a more natural way. The language program presents students with authentic French videos like movie clips, music videos and inspirational talks. 

This content is made approachable through accurate interactive subtitles in French and English (both of which can be turned on or off), which allow students to hover over any word of a video to see its definition and add it as a flashcard for later review. Students can create flashcard decks and are also quizzed on the words used in the videos they watch.

Now, don’t get discouraged by the website’s old-school design—this is a particularly effective resource to introduce to all students who struggle with French grammar and conjugation.

With an extensive library of courses and exercises that discuss the head-scratching parts of French (such as the rules of French grammar, conjugation and spelling), we particularly love that all points are explained in a concise manner and illustrated with numerous examples. Students can also take a test at the end of the lesson to verify their understanding of the subject they’ve just learned.

This is great if you want your students to prepare (or review) a complex point, especially for your intermediate and advanced students. The site’s forum and pen pals sections can be beneficial to all of your students.

7.  Expressio

What French teacher never felt overwhelmed by the spate of questions from their students about the origins of a seemingly nonsensical French idiom?

This website makes it easy for you! With an almost endless list of French idioms explained , this is the ultimate guide to making teaching idioms easy and interesting.

Each entry details the origins and meaning of most common idioms with historical facts and anecdotes about the expressions you’re looking for. It also includes examples to show proper usage in context and translations!

8.  Bibliothèque Numérique

This is another great resource for which we can thank the European broadcast network TV5Monde. Also free, it focuses on French literature and is mainly dedicated to your advanced students (or those that have a knack for words).

You can get instant access to over 400 French classics online without registration. It’s an excellent resource for helping you structure your lessons, thanks to its collection of summaries and commentaries about the author, novel, essay or poem that you are studying.

9.  Herodote

Named after the famous Greek historian, this is a website that is actually used by French natives in their History classroom—largely because it’s the most extensive, informative and interactive of its kind.

Free or paid, this is a great way for you to introduce a part of French culture and history that is often overlooked by French teachers. It can incentivize your students to discover parts of the French culture that are often reserved for more advanced learners, and as such, offers a challenge to your most motivated and curious students.

Because this is mainly designed for French natives, the language is as authentic as it gets. Use Herodote ’s history courses and articles with your advanced students, but feel free to use the chronologies and flashcards with your intermediate students.

There is a reason that flashcards have aided students for decades in everything from addition to foreign language vocabulary:  they work!  Often used to supplement material at home, flashcards can be an excellent resource .

To use them in the classroom, consider a web-based tool such as Quizlet, which offers online flashcards covering a high variety and volume of French vocabulary . For example, the beloved children’s series Le Petit Nicolas  now has its own YouTube channel, as does  Kaamelott , a kooky take on King Arthur in the spirit of Monty Python. Popular French cooking channels, such as the L’atelier de Roxane , can also complement units on the imperative or food vocabulary.

Loaded with a variety of premium French resources like worksheets and quizzes which you can adapt to suit your curriculum, Teachers Pay Teachers is a website that is more suited for you as a teacher than your students.

You could also find charts, which allow students to draw comparisons between objects while improving their vocabulary. To take visuals to the next level, find games that employ more advanced vocabulary. Whatever material you need, this website is likely to have it, and it saves you a ton of work, too!

There’s also the British equivalent, TES , depending on your classroom needs and location.

Your students live and breathe the internet. Let’s not fool ourselves: Long gone are the days when they’d rush for a bilingual dictionary to learn everything about an unknown word.

Going online to check the meaning, spelling, structure or verb should not be mistaken as a demonstration of our era’s laziness. Rather, it ought to be celebrated as this generation’s desire for efficiency.

Instead of fighting the tools that your students prefer to use, help them by pointing them in the right direction—towards the websites that will help them progress and not “waste their time.”

Websites offer a diverse, endless range of content and knowledge—think of it as the ultimate library. They facilitate the learning process by helping students take control of what they want to learn, based on their interests.

While not all websites are worthwhile, the discovery process resembles the journey to finding the perfect book. In short, your students demonstrate a sense of independence and ownership when they get online to find answers and learn.

What can be more French than an authentic French website, written by native French speakers for other French speakers?

True, your students may not necessarily want to learn sophisticated or literary French first (the French that most teachers want to teach first), but like English, French is a varied, comprehensive language with multiple styles and levels of speech.

If your students veer from this list of websites and end up on ones that use argot (slang), for example, know that it will actually increase their understanding of the French language as a whole, but you need to let them know how it fits within the language. Teach them that slang is slang, it is heavily connoted and should not be used in official or work contexts.

Additionally, languages evolve. Websites and social media are often the first to reflect changes to the language. Rather than fight it, guide your students and teach them what the correct or best possible forms are. Explain the evolutions, and how to best use them in which context.

Give your students options, but let them pick what sites work best for them. It’s easy to be all over the place when using websites, so make sure to focus on a handful of good ones rather than trying to do too much and gobbling up data from all of them.

Rest assured that the websites listed are all worth your students’ time, but make an effort to familiarize yourself with them before introducing the sites to your students. For example, know which website serves what purpose, what tools are most useful, etc.

Here are some additional tips that will maximize your students’ learning skills with these websites:

Enter bookmarks. Make sure your students mark the websites that work best for them as favorites in their home browser. This will save time and is such a simple step that produces huge benefits—almost completely ensuring that your students will visit those sites regularly on their own.

Also, the main challenge when using websites with your French students is to teach them that they need to be proactive , as well as which methods to use to make their online learning more efficient. Don’t expect your students to master content just by surfing digital pages—that’s just not how it works!

Encourage your classes to:

My only disgust with this app is that it will not sync my progress across devices. I use the app in my phone and iPad but keeps different progress records for each. Frustrating! I tried contacting the developers about it, but never got a response.

Bonjour, I was wondering if there is a way to show the English translation of sentence on lessons? I am trying to use this app to get a better understand of the language but I am not fluent and I don’t know a lot of words quite yet. Hello, If you use the english version of Dr French, you'll find a button next to the examples to translate them. It's a small button with the letters "en". Click again on the button to display the french version. We didn't add the translation for all the examples (only for 1000 of them) but we're working on it!

Some of the French learning activities on Busuu include gap filling, word puzzles, audio listening tasks and identifying words.

One of the best aspects of this app is that once you have completed a written exercise, native French speakers from the Busuu community can help to correct your work, and give you advice on how you can improve next time.

Lingopie – Great for Binge watching

My French learning at school was so heavily focused on textbooks and comprehension worksheets. So much so that when I moved to Paris as part of my Erasmus experience, it was a bit of a shock to listen to how ‘real’ French was spoken .

If I could go back in time, I would have implemented more French listening in order to be better prepared.

This is why I have added the Lingopie app to the list of best French apps. Lingopie allows you to binge watch French movies , series, documentaries, (and much more) as part of your learning.

All the movies and series come with 2 sets of subtitles – one in English and one in French. As you are watching, you can click on any of the words in the subtitles and you will get an immediate translation from French.

It also has a microphone feature where you can repeat certain words and phrases. The system will then grade your pronunciation accuracy. Awesome!

French Today- Great for Audiobooks

Ok, I’m not even being biased here – the French Today app is a wonderful tool for French learners.

Most of the time, when you download a French audiobook, you need to download a .zip file from Dropbox, handle PDF files, maybe a bunch of MP3 audio files… Then open one or multiple PDF files and try to find the corresponding audio file, etc… Or connect to a website and remain connected to be able to work with your lessons…

With the French Today app, all the download and files are handled automatically. You can hide / reveal the English translation, change the audio recording speeds, skip back… The app remembers where your were in both the audio and transcript.

The French Today app allows you to listen to and read French Today 2.5 hour free bilingual audiobook : it features the first part of the story of Mary, the main character of the ongoing novel at the core of French Today “À Moi Paris” French learning method .

The French story of the novel is recorded at tow or three levels of pronunciation : super enunciated (only for the beginner level), normal, and modern French (fast !!!). Tandem- Great for speaking with other learners

Tandem is a fantastic app for speaking with other language learners. You will be matched with a native French speaker, so you can practice speaking French with them, and in return you can speak English with them (or any other language you are fluent in) to help them learn their target language.The app is slick and really easy to navigate. And free.

You can type, send voice notes, or even video call. Using Tandem should really help your French conversational skills and hopefully boost your confidence – this will depend on how patient your French teacher is though. This is why it’s better to be already somewhat conversant in French before you use Tandem. French people can be a bit overzealous when it comes to correcting French learners!

I cannot emphasize how important it is to put your French knowledge to practice through speaking with others!

So, all these apps are great in their own ways. I can’t really tell you which one is the best because everyone has their own learning styles and preferences.

But mixing and matching some of these apps could be a good idea, so you get a bit of grammar, speaking and listening practice.

HwPic Co-Founder Tiklat Issa said that the app was initially rejected by Apple’s App Store, which believed it would promote cheating, but he successfully argued that just because someone uses the app in a way that it’s not meant to be used doesn’t mean the app should be punished.

Issa added that HwPic prohibits cheating in its terms and conditions. Tutors don’t solve homework that has words like “Quiz” or “Exam,” and they often know if a student is sending a photo during a test if they’ve paid for expedited answers, and if the photo is dim, blurry and taken under a desk. “We’ve minimized cheating,” said Issa. “We haven’t eliminated it. That’s kind of unrealistic.”
