The following two techniques are powerful approaches to narrow down where the client is and what they want from their career.
Career counseling techniques are “more effective when they are in line with the client’s developmental stage” (Kidd, 2014, p. 22).
The framework that follows the acronym FIRST (focus, information, realism, scope, and tactics) is a helpful and practical tool for understanding the client’s existing developmental stage.
Use the FIRST Framework Questions worksheet to ask the client a series of career counseling questions to understand where they are in their career thinking; for example (modified from Kidd, 2014):
The counselor assesses the answers to understand how far the client is along the path to a new career decision.
While subjective assessments may not fully capture the skill sets and expertise of clients, they help clarify their wants and needs for current and future roles (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017).
The Assessment of Life and Career ‘Wants’ worksheet contains five questions that help clients connect their sense of purpose to the career they wish to pursue.
The answers are valuable for considering how their existing or future career plans meet their needs and wants.
Evaluation sheets are crucial for understanding whether clients’ needs are being met and how to improve future interventions.
Provide the client with the Career Counseling Evaluation worksheet, then review and collate the answers to identify how to improve the support provided.
Focusing on achievements is a positive way of raising self-esteem and identifying counseling skills that may be useful later in someone’s career (Nathan & Hill, 2006).
The Satisfying Achievements at Work exercise identifies key accomplishments, what was important about each one, and the skills and qualities involved (modified from Nathan & Hill, 2006).
The answers help the client and guide the counselor’s interventions to identify skills and qualities they may wish to use in future roles.
If the client has been out of the working environment for some time, perhaps with parental responsibilities or long-term sickness, a return to the workforce may prompt concerns regarding a lack of skills or relevant strengths (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017).
Use the Returning to Work Checklist to remind clients of their many strengths and transferable skills from previous employment or in response to their duties outside.
Every person brings with them skills and strengths. The exercise above helps to remind the individual that these skills and strengths may have been developed or practiced outside the workplace.

In the entrepreneurial world, a business plan is a sacred text. You can't get funding without a solid business plan, and even if you manage to scrape by without one, chances are your organization will be so disorganized you won't have a chance at any significant level of success. Outlining your goals, your vision, your competition, your challenges, and the mechanics that will drive your progress, a business plan tries to predict the course of your first few years of a company's growth.
Your career requires a similar level of attention--you'll need to pick out specific goals, determine your ideal path, identify key challenges and opportunities, and come up with some contingency plans--so why don't more people write out business plans for their careers?
Start out with a mission statement
What is "success" in your mind? It's different for everybody. For some, it's getting to retire by the age of 50. For others, it's making six figures every year. For still others, it's making partner or landing some similar directorial role. The mission statement of your career business plan will explain exactly what success is to you, and a general idea of how you plan to get there (the smaller details can wait until later sections).
For this section, limit yourself to two or three sentences. You want to be as concise as possible without eliminating any of your overall vision.
List your short-term and long-term goals
Once you've established a solid mission statement, take the time to list your long-term and short-term goals. Because your mission statement is established, you should have no trouble distinguishing which of your possible goals are aligned under that vision and which aren't wholly or directly related to it. Your long-term goals are ones that will take a year or more to accomplish, and might only serve in a general context, like "get promoted" or "move to a bigger firm." Your short-term goals will be much more actionable and specific, taking priority and leading into your long-term goals with target accomplishments like "land a 50 percent increase in year-over-year traffic." If you keep to your career business plan, you can return to it regularly and start crossing off your goals as you accomplish them.
List your current and desired skills and credentials
Chances are, most of your long-term goals will require you to have specific skills, which you might already have (or you might not). For example, if one of your goals is to get promoted to a supervisory position, you might need to develop skills in a related peripheral department before you can make the move, such as a lead developer learning more about other programming languages. This section of your career business plan will help you figure out exactly what you need, have, and need to get to reach your short-term and long-term goals. In a way, this functions as a separate goal list that caters specifically to your skills and credentials. Similarly, you can return to it and cross things off as you learn or develop them.
Describe your operational approach
One of the most important sections of a traditional business plan is the "operations" detail, where entrepreneurs discuss the ins and outs of how they will manage their business, including who they will hire, when they will hire, what roles will need to exist, and what policies, processes, and procedures will be instated. Your career "operations" section will be far less detailed and less strict, but it will still need to outline how you intend to operate. Will you focus on teamwork or prioritize individual efforts? Will you initialize your own projects or stick to exceling at what's assigned to you? These choices will depend on your ultimate vision.
Note your key challenges and opportunities
In businesses, challenges come from competition and weaknesses in the model, and opportunities come from circumstances that can be taken advantage of. In your career, challenges will come from difficulties at the firm, competition from other individuals, and changing landscapes of your industry. Opportunities will come from position openings, economic changes, and new clients. Take the time to speculate about possible challenges and opportunities--not only as they exist for you today, but how they might exist for you over the course of the next several years.
Identify potential problems and contingency plans
Some of your challenges might evolve into full-fledged problems; for example, you might get laid off or suddenly find yourself unable to work. These scenarios will pop up no matter how much you try to avoid them or ignore them. It's your job to think as far ahead as you can and prepare for as many possibilities as you can. The more contingency plans you list out (such as including alternate career paths), the better prepared you'll be for an inevitable hurdle.
Writing out a full-fledged business plan for your career will take some time, but for most people, the investment is worth it. You'll have a go-to document to help guide your course; when you encounter a challenge, you'll have contingency plans to rely on. When you aren't sure about a particular direction, you can compare it to your original "mission statement." And of course, you can always go back and update it as you grow and change as a professional. The key is to have a reasonable backbone to help guide and support your progress.

For many years, the average employee spent the majority of their career with one employer. They could expect full healthcare benefits for themselves and their families, a couple of weeks of paid vacation—and, most importantly—job security. People joined a company out of high school or college and, in many cases, remained with that company until they retired. The social contract between employer and employee was mostly a two-way street: The employee was loyal to the business, and the company provided stability long-term. For employees, that meant the traditional commitment of showing up at the workplace on time, being as productive as possible, and working to fulfill the company mission. For employers, that meant giving their team members both long-term job security as well as professional development and promotion. The job itself created the career path.
Today, that social contract has been broken by both sides: Companies rarely offer pensions, and they no longer invest in employees’ careers with the mindset that the relationship will last 20, 30, or even 40 years. Meanwhile, employees see each job as an opportunity to find the next opportunity. That’s not wrong; it’s today’s business reality. But it can become incredibly nerve-wracking. How do you plan your career path while navigating through multiple employers?
Build a network. While gaining experience will help you get better jobs and increase your pay, building a network is key to your long-term career prospects. After all, you can’t improve your skills if you can’t get hired, and your network will always remain one of your strongest resources for finding jobs. Whether you’re a recent grad relying on an alumni group or an experienced professional using a headhunter firm, you will find that you need a network to help you find job opportunities, connect with mentors, and even provide future employees for your own team. Think of your network as your long-term employer: the source of professional development and new opportunities.
Keep learning. Early in your career, you’ll want to keep expanding your know-how naturally, just in order to do your job well and feel confident. But it’s key to keep learning as you get more experienced. That might be additional formal education or learning online. It could even include informal interactions with your network. But the point is that you’ll feel more confident about your career path if you keep challenging yourself, learn about new trends, and understand where the conversation is headed. You don’t need to try to be an expert in every new concept. But you want to build an attitude that makes you less afraid of new ideas. When you’re young, it feels like everything that’s new is easy to adapt to your habits or mindset. Eventually, you build habits and preferences and find them harder to abandon. Change gets harder—not because your mind can’t learn new things as you get older but because we resist change generally. The longer something has worked well for us, the harder it becomes to abandon it.
Become self-aware (it’s not all about you). Job changes are more common than they used to be, but our emotional reaction to change hasn’t evolved as fast as the market has. The social contract that used to exist between employers and employees aligned with our basic instinct for stability. Humans find safety in routine. Losing your job, or even proactively deciding to leave, is inherently stressful . It’s a change of livelihood, social life , daily habits, and even our identity . Thirty or forty years ago, we only changed jobs once or twice in our lifetime. But now, the average length of time at any one job is about four years , according to the Department of Labor. That’s as many as 10 jobs over the course of a 40-year career. And yet, we must detach as much as possible from feeling a personal judgment when it happens. Economies ebb and flow, and companies go through reductions in force (RIFs) in order to survive until the next uptick. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad person or even a poor performer. You simply were not essential to that company at that moment. As difficult as it is, long-term career planning in today’s age means planning not to have job security. So, being resilient will be incredibly important.
The famous quote from Alice in Wonderland is a useful guide: “If you don't know where you want to go, then it doesn't matter which path you take.” You need to know where you want to go. You don’t have to understand how you’re going to get there fully, but you do need to plan (and tweak as you go). It’s a bit like one long road trip. You’re headed out of Boston to San Diego. There’s a lot of different ways to make that trek. But you have to decide, at least, that you want to be somewhere in Southern California. People make big changes in their career path: starting as an actor, deciding to go into sales, and leaving to start their own coffee bar.
