He also denoted personal protective equipment to frontline health care personnel and that for me is the sign of a true patriot as he was there to help the country when it was in danger. 

I would like to conclude this speech by saying that we should all show unity and togetherness. By helping each other only we can be the ladder that would help in developing our country. As I said, patriotism is the most important thing for the development of the country. 'Right or wrong, our country' is a popular but flawed expression of patriotism; a morally responsible patriot, on the other hand, tries to protect and improve her country’s moral character

Naval officer Stephen Decatur is said to have once exclaimed, during a toast: “Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but right or wrong, our country!” 

While dinner toasts may fail to capture a speaker’s considered views, “right or wrong, our country!” has been repeated so often that we can safely assume it resonates widely, whether or not it reflects a position Decatur earnestly held. But  is  a true patriot someone who says, “right or wrong, our country!”? And is that what a patriot  should  say? These are the questions that interest me here.

There is a view of patriotism, perhaps the dominant view, on which the answer is “yes.” Patriotism on this view involves unquestioning loyalty to one’s country.  

This is not to suggest that loyalty is all there is to patriotism. There are varieties of blind allegiance that hardly anyone would recognize as patriotism. Consider the attitude of two soldiers described by Shakespeare in  Henry V . At one point in the play, the king, in an attempt to boost the morale of his troops, disguises himself as an ordinary soldier. He approaches two men, Williams and Bates, and says, “Methinks I could not die anywhere so contented as in the King’s company, his cause being just and his quarrel honourable.” Williams replies, “That’s more than we know.” Bates goes further: “Ay, or more than we should seek after. For we know enough if we know we are the King’s subjects. If his cause be wrong, our obedience to the King wipes the crime of it out of us.”

We may have sympathy with the (all too human) tendency to fight for one’s group. Still, to have a weak concern at best for what is right and just objectively speaking is irresponsible, morally so. A person who disregards morality for the sake of one’s own aims is an egoist. A person who disregards it for the sake of one’s nation is a tribalist and a jingoist.   

Williams and Bates here see themselves as hitmen for the king, but without a moral burden. They are following the orders of an authority figure. Whether or not one can avoid responsibility by pleading this kind of defense is a question I leave to one side (the strategy didn’t work for Eichmann); more importantly for present purposes, patriots on the view under consideration are  advocates  for and  champions  of their country. They do not wash their hands of responsibility, as King Henry’s troops do. Rather, like advocates, they prefer that their country be in the right; but like champions, they are prepared to defend it come what may. They do this, presumably, because they love their country and care about its plight. Blindly carrying out orders, as Bates and Williams do, without consideration of the justice of the cause or a sense of responsibility for the outcome, is not yet patriotism on the view under discussion.

Patriotism thus understood is an improvement over Bates’s and Williams’s attitude, but is it a good thing?  

We may have sympathy with the (all too human) tendency to fight for one’s group. Still, to have a weak concern at best for what is right and just objectively speaking is irresponsible, morally so. A person who disregards morality for the sake of one’s own aims is an egoist. A person who disregards it for the sake of one’s nation is a tribalist and a jingoist.

To be sure, it is rare for a properly socialized person to openly flaunt moral imperatives, so a groupish person may be inclined, instead, try to persuade herself that her side always was and always will be in right. But to assert such a thing is irresponsible too, morally speaking, and not too different from maintaining that we, personally, like the biblical Jesus, can do no wrong. The flaw in this type of reasoning is much easier to recognize in the individual case compared to the collective one, but there is a flaw in both cases, and of a similar origin.  

Is it morally irresponsible, then, to be a patriot?

Some wish to argue that it is. It has been suggested that patriotism is not a good attitude to have or to teach to our children and that perhaps, many an unjust war would be prevented but for the idea that patriotism is commendable.

Though I, personally, consider myself a cosmopolitan humanist, I think the above conclusion is far too quick. There is a vision of patriotism that’s morally defensible and that may have advantages over my own cosmopolitan leanings. One can argue, and plausibly, that patriots care about their country’s moral standing. They would not want their country to get embroiled in unjust wars or the perpetration of atrocities for which history may judge it harshly, and for which future generations may bear national guilt.

It is something like this second idea of patriotism that general Schurz seems to have had in mind when, in  The Policy of Imperialism , he admonishes readers to stick to true patriotism and amends the popular exclamation associated with Decatur’s after-dinner toast to: “Our country—if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.” The writer  G. K. Chesterton , perhaps more poignantly, writes in this regard, “‘My country, right or wrong’” is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying, “My mother, drunk or sober.”

The reason I think that patriotism—in this version—has advantages over my cosmopolitan stance is that in a world of rampant tribalism, patriots of the second kind are well positioned to provide an antidote to blind loyalty of the morally irresponsible variety.

This vision of patriotism, however, is far less popular than the first. Why?    

I think it is because we tend to suspect that the person who claims to be concerned with objective morality and impartial justice lacks loyalty; that she doesn’t see herself as “one of us.” Perhaps, she engages in a pseudo-intellectual attempt to demonstrate refined moral sensibilities by rejecting her roots. Maybe, she is even ashamed of the members of her group.

And it is true that one  may  criticize what one takes to be one’s country’s moral failings due not to a loving and patriotic concern for the nation’s “moral soul,” but for other reasons including not only a serious commitment to moral principles—which no morally serious person can oppose—but less honorable motives. There may well be people who seek to show that they, personally, are not narrow-minded xenophobes by disparaging their own country.

A default assumption to the effect that one’s own nation is in the wrong is not morally sound either, of course. A cause doesn’t become morally just because it is adopted by an adversary any more than it becomes morally right because it is adopted by our group. But the morally responsible patriot knows this and acts accordingly. She is not someone who tries to prove her own ethics credentials by denigrating her country but rather, someone who tries to protect and improve her country’s moral character.

Perhaps, patriotism  à la  Decatur is popular, because we feel certain that patriots of this kind, particularly among compatriots, have their hearts in the right place, and this is what we care about. Or maybe, we think it is morally permissible, objectively speaking, to side with one’s own group no matter what. Consider the old joke about loyal friends: A good friend, they say, would help you move a couch. A  really  good friend would help you move a body.

It is unclear that friendship is the analogy relevant here. Family relations may be a better analogy. It may be permissible for us—though why, precisely, is a separate question—to care more about the well-being and reputation of our friends than we do about their moral characters. Family members, on the other hand, bear at least some responsibility for each other, including for each other’s moral failings. Suppose, however, that friendship  were  the relevant analogy. The second and more important point is that the question is not whether a really good friend would help you move a body but whether she would help you commit murder and other offenses.

It is difficult to see how a true friend would do  that . Same for a true patriot.

Some years ago, I read something in the newspaper that Princeton economist Uwe Reinhardt said about patriotism that has stuck with me. To paraphrase, he said that it was glib and facile to think patriotism merely means love of country, an easy and painless thing to do. By implication, therefore, patriotic exhortations, flag-waving, and standing handover heart for the national anthem are not nearly enough to qualify as patriotic. He said one must also be willing to defend and support one's country in exigent times. That, he believed, was what separated sunshine patriots from the real ones. He was specifically declaiming against some neo-conservatives who would consign youth to fight a faraway war (in Iraq) when they themselves were unwilling to do so when young and called upon to fight in other wars. As I recall, he was specifically referring to comments made by neo-conservative godfather, Norman Podhoretz. He took some shots at the late actor John Wayne, too, who spent decades cultivating an image of hyper-masculinity and of being a patriotic stalwart, but who nevertheless escaped military service in WWII with questionable draft classifications. Sound familiar? Reinhardt quoted a standard lexical definition of patriotism that included the phrase defends one's country, along with loving and supporting it. He was basically saying that elites who extol the virtues of patriotism often neglect its concomitant duties, finding it easier to delegate the demanding parts to the boys and girls of Main Street, rural America, and the inner cities, while simultaneously enshrouding themselves in the flag and decrying those who do not share their fervor for war as unpatriotic. Our politicians should adhere to the well l aid principles of political philosophy. Democracy is w elcomed by most of the nations in the world. Indian democracy is praised by all nations. The court als o could not properly define the Basic Structure of the Constitution as this structure is getting changed by different judges in different ca ses. Our country suffers at present not for want of religiou s institutions, but for want of people who are prep ared to conform to its rules. Parliament is the citadel of democracy. Patriotism coupled with nationali sm is a bedrock for potential foundation for a st rong society, socialism and democracy.

Many people in the past have served their countries and even laid their lives for it. Many people still continue to serve their country with as much devotion. Indian freedom fighters were filled with the feeling of patriotism. They did not care about themselves and worked selflessly for the nation. Even today, many people are dedicated towards serving the nation in whatever way they can. However, the feeling of patriotism is slowly fading. The youth today does not feel as strongly for his country as people of the earlier generations felt.

The elderly people must make an effort to instil the feeling of patriotism in their children. Institutions such as schools and colleges must also promote the same. The youth of the country must love and respect the country and work towards building it strong.

But is this real patriotism? No! Such an atmosphere must be created in general and not just around these special dates. A nation where the youth loves the country and is driven towards improving its condition socially and economically would certainly grow better.

A true patriot is the one who works hard for the betterment of his country. He contributes his bit towards improving the condition of his country in whatever way he can. A true patriot does not only work towards building his nation but also inspires those around him to do so.

• Bal Ganga Dhar Tilak

Bal Ganga Dhar Tilak was infused with the feeling of patriotism. His saying, “Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it” showed how determined he was in freeing the country from the tyranny of the British rulers. He condemned the British government for its brutal treatment. He demanded right to self government for the people of India.

• Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi

His contribution towards India’s freedom struggle is known to all. He led the maximum number of freedom movements against the British. He was a perfect example of “simple living high thinking”. He dreamt of India’s freedom and worked hard towards achieving the same in his own unique way.

• Sarojni Naidu

Sarojini Naidu, a famous singer of her times, was also a patriot at heart. She participated in the freedom struggle and contributed her bit towards freeing the country from the British rule. She was also arrested during the Quit India movement but this did not dither her feeling of patriotism for her country.

He puts the interest of his country and countrymen first and is willing to sacrifice everything for the betterment of his country. On the other hand, false patriot is one who claims to love his country and shows that he is a patriot while in public. However, he does so for his own gain and does not actually possess these feelings.

Patriotism Vs Nationalism

The terms nationalism and patriotism are often used interchangeably. However, there is a difference between the two. Patriotism means being proud of one’s nation for its positive points and working towards its betterment. On the other hand, nationalism means being proud of one’s nation regardless of its positive and negative points. While patriotism is good, nationalism is considered irrational and spiteful.

If political leaders have a feeling of patriotism, they will work for the country unlike the present scenario where in those in power are busy making money for themselves rather than working for the upliftment of the country. Similarly, if the government officials and other citizens of the country are determined towards serving the nation rather than making quick money or getting quick services for themselves, the level of corruption will fall.

Patriotism Must Not Turn Into Chauvinism

Being patriotic is a great virtue. We must love and respect our country and serve it in whatever way we can. The positive points of possessing feeling of patriotism shared above show how it can help the country prosper and grow. However, some people take this love for their country to the next level. Excess love for one’s country and believing that your country is superior and important is termed as chauvinism. As excess of everything is bad so is excess love for one’s country. Chauvinists’ strong belief in their country’s ideologies and irrational belief of superiority of its own people creates a feeling of hatred for others. This often instigates conflicts and war amid countries thereby disrupting peace and harmony.

There have been several instances in the past wherein chauvinism has resulted in unnecessary conflicts turning into riots. There is a very thin line between patriotism and chauvinism. While patriotism is healthy, chauvinism is fanatic and irrational. People must ensure that their devotion and love towards their country does not turn into chauvinism over the time.

Love for one’s native land is the purest form of love. A person who is ready to sacrifice his own interests for his/ her country deserves a salute. Each country in the world needs more and more people who possess this feeling.

The popular narrator and television host talked recently about how his goal in  Something to Stand For was to present history in an enjoyable and entertaining way.

American heroes come in all shapes and sizes: A President who disregards the advice of his attorney general to rescue captive military forces. A fourteen-year-old youth who forges his mother’s signature to join the military and then stows aboard a ship to engage in battle. A Supreme Court justice who, as a youth, had once dated a young woman who also became a Supreme Court justice, then spent decades serving on the bench alongside his lifelong friend.

Mike Rowe, consummate storyteller, surprises us with these and other true tales in his new film   Something to Stand For . His emphasis is on patriotism as he leads the viewer on an epic journey to Washington, DC, and to the front lines of the American Revolution, World War II, the Civil Rights movement, and more.

Rowe, whose varied career has led him to the stage and the television screen, has narrated programs on the  Discovery Channel ,  The Science Channel , and  National Geographic Channel . He has a popular podcast titled  The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe . He’s perhaps best known as narrator on the long-running Discovery Channel series  Dirty Jobs .

Mike Rowe talked recently about how his goal in  Something to Stand For  was to present history in an enjoyable way. “The thing about movies,” he said, “is—and I say this as a guy who’s really only done one, but I’ve worked in TV for 30 years—it’s fine to have agenda, it’s fine to have a message and a point and a purpose. In fact, it’s important to! But if you’re going to wade into this world, your first duty to the viewers or to the listeners is to entertain them. It’s that simple! If you can’t do that, then all of your intentions are just lectures and sermons and lessons.”

Rowe acknowledged that while it may be true that people need those things, that’s not why they go to the theater or why they watch television. As the writer and star of  Something to Stand For , Rowe modeled his reporting after radio broadcaster Paul Harvey’s classic show  The Rest of the Story . “There were mysteries,” Rowe said, “and they gave you an opportunity to learn something you  didn’t  know about someone you  did  know.”

Rowe wrote several hundred stories in that genre for his podcast. He was eventually invited to convert his stories with their surprise endings into a television show, and then a movie. But what should be his theme? Rowe was acutely aware of the decline in patriotism in America in the last decade, especially among young adults. Thinking about the challenges facing America in the current era, Rowe chose to focus on patriotism, to choose stories that reinforce our appreciation for the American spirit.

“You know, all things considered,” he thought, “given what’s going on in our country right now, it might be fun to ruminate on patriotism and tell some stories you may not have heard about. And in between those stories, we’ll visit the monuments and memorials, the places in our nation’s capital that were erected to celebrate these people.”

As for how Catholics and other Christians can help to strengthen America, Rowe reflected: “Well, I would suggest that Church (with a capital ‘C’) is important today, in ways that a lot of non-churchgoing people might be on the verge of realizing. By that I mean that beyond the shared faith of the congregants, there is the egalitarianism that comes from sitting next to one another—with a shared faith, but maybe a different income tax bracket, a different color, or nationality. All of the smaller things that separate us go out the window when we’re shoulder-to-shoulder in a pew. George Bush got a lot of guff for saying this, but we really are ‘a thousand points of light.’”

Rowe added one more thought. While making Something to Stand For, he had, as he said earlier, visited the monuments that commemorated American heroes and celebrated their contributions to our nation. His favorite moment during the filming, he said, was not planned—rather, it happened while filming at the World War II Memorial. “We were setting up for a shot,” he said, “and I had planned to walk toward the camera, saying things. But while I was waiting for the crew to get everything together, an honor flight showed up, and I saw some old men in wheelchairs with their families and volunteers, being wheeled through the Memorial for the first time.”

Mike Rowe asked the director to change the plan, and to let the camera crew film him in a different situation than had been planned. He ended up having a conversation with a 91-year-old veteran who had fought in Korea. The man had never been to the Memorial before, and he was overwhelmed. Mike took advantage of the chance encounter and included it in his film. As Rowe recalled, “To hear him talking to me about gratitude and service, as the tears streamed down his wrinkled, leathery face—you know, for all your planning, sometimes the better option pops up right in front of you.”

Something to Stand For opens in limited release on June 27, and in most theaters it will run until July 4. Information about tickets and showtimes in your area can be found on the film’s site . The most unpatriotic act today is Trump’s (and -most of- GOP’s) equivocation of patriotism with support for him. While branding himself to be the quintessential American patriot, Trump’s actions and rhetoric contradict the essence of patriotism. Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and his encouragement of the January 6 Capitol assault are prime samples of his deeply unpatriotic behavior. True patriotism involves upholding democratic principles, respecting the rule of law, and fostering unity among citizens. Convicted felon Trump in contrast has demonstrated behavior that is deeply unpatriotic, undermining the democratic foundations of the U.S., flouting the rule of law, and sowing discord among Americans. The virtue of patriotism begins with the rectification of the term patriotism.

Once again Donald Trump makes his appearance in the comments for an article not written about him.

So true mrscracker. But when you see the name Deacon Dom you know that you are going to get the liberal democrat view whether it is on faith or politics. I suppose that it is CWR’s way of being “fair and balanced.”

So do we vote for Pres. Biden, the hypocritical Catholic who advocates abortion on demand, gender transition surgery for children, and seems to have no clue about how to deal with volatile situations in the world, allowing protesters to wreck colleges and steal graduation ceremonies and celebrations from hard-working students? Really now, are we supposed to vote for an unknown intellectual candidate that has no chance of winning unless God performs a miracle? Yes, it would be wonderful is these smart and experienced candidates would have a chance, but for various reasons (often related to inability to raise funds and gain the support of their peers, they don’t have a chance of even getting 1% of the vote–face it and vote smart. Like it or not, we have two choices to vote for, and I will definitely NOT be voting for Pres. Biden, the abortion advocate, the LBGTQ+ yes-man, and a weakling when it comes to dangerous situations in other countries, leaving the U.S.A. vulnerable to attack on our own soil as well as at foreign U.S. bases. I will be voting for Pres. Trump–a complex individual who has shown himself capable of leading with strength in spite of the vicious attacks against him and his supporters by the leftist organizations that are anti-God, anti-religion, and anti-U.S.A. Yes, there may be other more Catholic/desirable candidates–but they don’t have a chance with a hole in it (as my mother used to say) of winning, and voting for them will only hand the election to Pres. Biden and four more years of appeasing liberals, giving our tax monies away to young people who don’t think they should pay back their student loans, advocating abortion on demand, crusading for children to have “gender transition” treatments (butchering them), and undermining the American military as well as taxing hard-working Americans to the point where they are working hard to earn less take-home pay. Let’s be wise as serpents even as we are gentle as doves.

Right. So instead we should all vote for the political party full of groomers and sexual deviants, racists, antisemites, Marxists, abortionists, liars, atheists, and people who weaponize federal agencies against dissenters. No thanks.

I could not agree more. Patriotism is love of country. Trumpism is love of (Trump)self.

Sounds like a great movie. Going to tell all my MAGA friends about it.
