With knowledge of geology, students get to write essays and papers on the various related aspects of the subject. Geology courses are majorly offered in colleges, which means that writing on the subject is mostly for college and postgraduate students. To write a geology research paper, students and researchers must know that a good geology research paper cuts across the physical characteristics of the human surroundings. Also, embarking on research writing in this area of learning requires preparation and lots of research work, and to scale through, the best thing is first to choose a suitable topic that resonates with you; this is the first tip to writing an excellent research paper. Like every other research writing on other subjects, writing a geology paper requires that you follow through with some laid down writing structures. These structures guide you while writing, help give your work form and help you achieve the purpose for writing.

Structure of a Geology Research Paper

A typical research paper follows a particular pattern. Each of its patterns addresses the various related aspects of the paper. The purpose of understanding the structure of a research paper is that it aids your understanding of how to arrange various ideas introduced in the paper. The structure of a research paper differs from that of any other form of writing. It follows a detailed format. The following are its particulars in the order of their appearance.

  • Abstract The abstract is very important in research writing. Any properly written research starts with an abstract that gives a detailed overview of all the various areas the research will touch across. For research writing, an abstract helps you understand the areas your writing will focus on. When writing an abstract, you are to briefly outline your research areas, indicating the relevant points and keywords on which your research will concentrate. Your abstract has to appear after your research topic.
  • Introduction Your introduction is like a brief background to your research topic. When writing an introduction for your research, your focus should be, stating facts related to your topic, outlining the purpose and the research objectives. The introduction narrows the scope of your research, giving a reader background information on the research topic.
Research methodology Statement of the research problem Research results and finding Discussion
  • Conclusion The conclusion is the final part of a well-written research paper structure. Research is considered incomplete if it does not contain the concluding part. In your research conclusion, you are expected to summarize and highlight other important information and findings not included in the body of the paper.
  • Reference List The reference list is where you reference all the studies and scholarly materials you have used in your research. Without including a reference list to your research, people may suggest that your work is plagiarized.

In academia, there are different referencing styles. There is the APA, MLA, and Harvard referencing style. The style you are to use in your research depends on the one recommended by your professor.

Physical geology is concerned with the processes occurring on or below the surface of Earth and the materials on which they operate. These processes include volcanic eruptions, landslides, earthquakes, and floods. Materials include rocks, air, seawater, soils, and sediment. Physical geology further divides into more specific branches, each of which deals with its own part of Earth’s materials, landforms, and processes. Mineralogy and petrology investigate the composition and origin of minerals and rocks. Volcanologists check lava, rocks, and gases on live, dormant, and extinct volcanoes. Seismologists set up instruments to monitor and predict earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Historical geology is concerned with the chronology of events, both physical and biological, that have taken place in Earth’s history. Paleontologists study fossils (remains of ancient life) for evidence of the evolution of life on Earth. Fossils not only relate evolution, but also speak of the environment in which the organism lived. Corals in rocks at the top of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, for example, show a shallow sea flooded the area around 290 million years ago. In addition, by determining the ages and types of rocks around the world, geologists piece together continental and oceanic history over the past few billion years. Plate tectonics (the study of the movement of the sections of Earth’s crust) adds to the story with details of the changing configuration of the continents and oceans.

Many other sciences also contribute to geology. The study of the chemistry of rocks, minerals, and volcanic gases is known as geochemistry. The physics of Earth is known as geophysics. Paleobotanists study fossil plants. Paleozoologists reconstruct fossil animals, while paleoclimatologists reconstruct ancient climates.

Environmental geologists attempt to minimize both the human impact on Earth and the impact of natural disasters on human kind. Hydrology and hydrogeology, two subdisciplines of environmental geology, deal specifically with water resources. Hydrologists study surface water whereas hydrogeologists study ground water. Both disciplines try to reduce the impact of pollution on these resources. Economic geologists focus on finding the minerals and fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, coal) needed to maintain or improve global standards of living.

149 engaging geology topics for students to write about.

geology topics

As a branch of Earth science, there are already a lot of geology research paper topics. However, there are more geological research topics that are yet unexplored.

Geology is that part of science that encompasses the physical structure of the earth. It is concerned with the liquid and solid structure of the earth. It also examines the solid properties of the terrestrial planet and natural satellites like the Moon and Mars.

Before you do that, how do you structure your work?

How to Structure Geology Research Essay

To get the best grades, you need an impeccable structure alongside great academic work. Even if you’re treating controversial geology paper topics, you need to abide by a structure. This structure lets you creatively express yourself. All professionals use these too:

Introduction and Thesis Statement. The introduction lets your readers know the fundamentals of the research. The thesis and introduction must be persuasive as it encompasses the key points which your research will be about. Research Methodology. This includes the methods applied during the research. You can’t write an academic paper or essay without support from books, journals, or professionals in the field. You need to document the means through which you’ve got your work to prove academic integrity. Literature Review. This is where you review different papers, journals, and other existing relevant materials. All these show that you know about the geology topic you want to write about as well as the gap your work seeks to cover. Body. The body of your research paper or essay is where your argument and findings are shared. Here, you must create engaging, even persuasive, arguments with your unique diction. Every point you want to make is unraveled here. Conclusion. In this section, you’ll summarize the results of your findings. You’ll also present your final words and impress your readers with what you’ve researched. Notes and References. As you already know that you can’t write a paper out of the blue, the notes and references page is where you document all the sources used for your research. This must be in concert with the referencing style of your school or faculty. Abstract. This is the final section of your writings although it will appear on the first page. This is because you need to have completed research and writing before writing your abstract. The 100 to 300 words content is a brief overview of everything you researched. It is a simple overview of everything your research is about, including your conclusions.

Historical Geology - How it works

Explaining origins.

For thousands of years, humans were content to rely on religiously inspired stories, rather than scientific research, to provide an explanation regarding Earth's origins. This topic, along with the scientific challenge to those early accounts of Earth's formation, is discussed in considerable detail within the essay Earth, Science, and Nonscience. Other aspects of the subject, particularly the challenge to mythological explanations put forward by earth scientists in modern times, are examined here.

All religious explanations of the planet's origins can be called myths, which is not necessarily a pejorative term: a myth is simply a story to explain how something came into being. So pervasive are myths about geology that a term, geomythology, has been coined to identify such myths. Geomythology in particular and mythology in general stand in sharp contrast to scientific explanations derived by using the scientific method of observation, hypothesis formation, testing of hypotheses, and the development and testing of theories.

CONTRASTING SCIENCE AND RELIGIOUS GEOMYTHOLOGY.

Science and myth have in common the aim of explaining how things came to be, but the means by which they reach that explanation are quite different. So, too, are the reasons that drive science on the one hand and religion or myth on the other in seeking to develop such an explanation.

The most famous of all religious explanations of Earth's origins, of course, is that found in the biblical book of Genesis. Probably written in the latter part of the second millennium B.C. , it offered a compelling story of creation that virtually defined the Western view of Earth's origins for more than 1,500 years, from about A.D. 300 to the beginning of the nineteenth century. Its purpose, of course, was not scientific, and it was not written as the result of research; rather, the Genesis account depicts nature as a vast stage on which a cosmic drama of love, sin, redemption, and salvation has been played out over the ages.

By contrast, the scientific search for Earth's origins is driven merely, or at least primarily, by curiosity to explain how things came to be as they are. Scientists certainly have their biases and are just as capable of error as anyone, yet at least they have a standard in the form of the scientific method. If a scientist's findings, and the resulting theory, with stand the rigorous testing required by the scientific method, the theory is rewarded with increasing acceptance and new research designed to test further its ability to explain the world. If the theory fails those tests, its adherents may hold on to it for a time, but eventually they die off, and the theory is discarded. On the other hand, adherence to the religious explanation of Earth's origins has proved more intractable, as we shall see.

The Religious War Concerning Earth's Origins

The great Italian artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was among the first Western thinkers to speculate that fossils might have been made by the remains of long-dead animals. This was a daring supposition to make in the Renaissance, and it would become even more daring to uphold such an idea in the centuries that followed. The concept of fossils seemed to imply an Earth older than the biblical account suggested, and with the Catholic Church under attack by the forces of religious reformation (i.e., Protestantism) and other forms of "heresy," church leaders became less and less inclined to tolerate any deviation from orthodoxy.

The ecclesiastical view of Earth's history reached a sort of extreme in the seventeenth century, with the Irish bishop James Ussher (1581-1656). The New Testament contains a thorough accounting of Jesus' lineage, both through his mother and his earthly father, Joseph, all the way back to the time of Adam. Jesus was descended from David, whose lineage is provided in the Old Testament, complete with each ancestor's life span and the age at which he fathered a successor in the Davidic line of descent. From these figures, Ussher concluded that God finished making Earth at 9:00 A.M. on Sunday, October 23, 4004 B.C. Accepted by the Church, Ussher's calculation gave the idea of a very young Earth an aura of "scientific" justification.

Ironically, one of the first scientists to discover evidence that pointed toward an extremely old Earth was also a minister, the English astronomer Henry Gellibrand (1597-1636). While researching Earth's magnetic field, Gellibrand discovered that the field had changed over time (as indeed it has—for more on this subject, see Geomagnetism). This was one of the first indications that the planet's history can be studied scientifically, even though humans have no direct information regarding the origins of Earth.

Early Stratigraphic Studies

After Gellibrand came the Danish geologist Nicolaus Steno (1638-1687), who studied the age of rock beds. Thus was born the concept of stratigraphy, or the study of rock layers beneath Earth's surface, which revealed a great deal about the planet's age. (See Stratigraphy, which discusses many topics related to historical geology.) Along with the English physicist Robert Hooke (1635-1703) and others, Steno also became one of the first thinkers to confront the possibility that Earth must be much more than 6,000 years old.

During the eighteenth century, the German geologist Johann Gottlob Lehmann (1719-1767) built on ideas introduced by Steno concerning the formation of rock beds. Lehmann put forward the theory that certain groups of rocks tend to be associated with each other and that each layer of rock is a sort of chapter in the history of Earth. Aspects of Lehmann's theory were incorrect, but the general principle marked an advancement over previous ideas in geology and helped point the way toward a new view of the earth sciences.

Previously, geologic studies had tended to be qualitative and descriptive, meaning that earth scientists used very generalized terminology and failed to possess a grasp of larger issues. Thanks to Lehmann and others who followed him, the earth sciences became more truly quantitative and predictive, offering explanations of what had happened in the past, along with justifiable theories concerning what might happen in the future.

The German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1750-1817) put forward a theory that was largely incorrect, yet one that nevertheless advanced the earth sciences. His "neptunist" theory was based on the idea that water had been the main force in shaping Earth's surface. Though this theory was not accurate, his idea was significant, because it constituted the first well-ordered geologic theory of Earth's origins and early history. At the same time, that history was turning out to be very long indeed.

Religion and Earth's Age

In 1774 the French mathematician Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), applied new scientific ideas to the study of Earth and estimated its age at 75,000 years. Privately he admitted that he actually thought Earth was billions of years old but did not think that such a figure would be understood. At the time, after all, the concept of a "billion" was hardly a familiar one, as it is today. More important, the idea of Earth being that old was shocking and downright frightening to people who accepted a strict interpretation of the biblical account.

In an earlier century, the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) had been forced, on pain of death, to recant his support for the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus's (1473-1543) discovery that Earth is not the center of the universe. In Buffon's day, by contrast, few Europeans faced such dire threats for endorsing apparently unbiblical ideas. A scientist could still lose his job for supporting the wrong principles, and thus Buffon had to renounce his position on threat of losing his post at the University of Paris.

AN ATHEISTIC REACTION.

Other forces were at work in the sciences during the eighteenth century, and some were openly hostile to religious belief. An extreme example was the French physician and philosopher Julien de La Mettrie (1709-1751), a leading figure in the mechanist school of the biological sciences. La Mettrie maintained that humans are essentially a variety of monkey, to whom they were superior only by virtue of possessing the power of language. Moving far beyond the territory of science itself, he also taught that atheism is the only road to happiness and that the purpose of human life is to experience pleasure.

In the physical sciences, an interesting example of reaction to religious belief can be found in the case of the French mathematician Pierre Simon de Laplace (1749-1827). Like those of La Mettrie, Laplace's aims were not purely scientific; instead, he envisioned himself as a warrior against religious belief. Correctly enough, Laplace maintained that the origins of the universe as well as its workings could be explained fully without any reference to God. He also introduced a highly influential theory, widely accepted today, that the solar system originated from a cloud of gas. (See the entries Planetary Science and Sun, Moon, and Earth.)

Like La Mettrie, Laplace took his ideas far beyond their justifiable purview in the realm of science, however, wielding them as a sword in a religious war. Laplace maintained that because it was possible to discuss the origins of the cosmos without reference to God, there must be no God—which is far from a logically necessary conclusion. Misguided as La Mettrie's and Laplace's atheistic crusades may have been, they are historically understandable: in France, far more than anywhere in western Europe except perhaps Spain, the Church had come to be seen as a force of political oppression, allied as it was with the French royalty. It is no wonder, then, that the French Revolution of 1789 was directed as much against the Church as against the king.

Putting human past on the MAPS

Harvard digital atlas plots patterns from history ancient and modern

Christy DeSmith

Harvard Staff Writer

A network of ancient Roman roads converges neatly with satellite images of the Earth at night. A heat map of 15th-century bubonic plague outbreaks bears an eerie resemblance to Europe’s early COVID-19 hot spots. Mapping Past Societies , a free digital atlas hosted by the Initiative for the Science of the Human Past at Harvard , illuminates just a few of these patterns.

“It has a rich dataset of historic, economic, archaeological, environmental, and health information as well as climate data going back much further,” said Santiago Pardo Sánchez ’16, the project’s co-managing editor. “Someone who’s interested in modern transportation could look at how it worked in the past. Someone who’s looking at the plague in Central Asia could also get data from the Middle East.”

Mapping Past Societies, or MAPS, is powered by vast spreadsheets that geo-locate everything from historic rat populations to medieval marketplaces and Roman military structures. Its user-friendly interface, which runs on ArcGIS software, invites discovery by layering multiple phenomena across a single map — or by animating how one dataset plays out over time.

“The shipwreck data have been important to me and other economic historians,” said MAPS founder and general editor Michael McCormick , the Francis Goelet Professor of Medieval History and chair of the Science of the Human Past initiative. “They offer a rather crude but nevertheless rich indicator of economic activity for the period between about 500 B.C.E. and 1500 C.E.”

For much of his career, McCormick focused on the history and archaeology of the fall of the Roman Empire. He was once in the habit of hand-drawing maps for his classes. Then a thought occurred one evening in the 1990s while he was outlining the Roman Empire for an exam: “At this very moment, around the globe, there are probably 100 other professors drawing exactly the same map,” he recalled. “I said, ‘Wait! This is not a good use of our time. There should be one map!’”

Soon he was experimenting with geographic information systems to design his own digital maps, with several appearing in “Origins of the European Economy: Communications and Commerce, A.D. 300-900” (2002). That led to partnering with the Center for Geographic Analysis to launch the free Digital Atlas of Roman Empire and Medieval Civilizations in the mid ’00s. Over the years, DARMC was slowly expanded to incorporate new datasets. Information on the ancient and medieval worlds remains most robust, but more recent additions cover Colonial Latin America, 18th-century France, and more.

The pandemic inspired the team to refresh the project’s branding and interface, relaunching DARMC earlier this year as MAPS. The site’s new dashboard will be familiar to anybody who recalls tracking COVID cases on the Johns Hopkins website. At the same time, recent software updates enabled the addition of that showstopping layering feature.

“Before you could just turn on and off one layer,” Pardo Sánchez noted. “But now, you can do much more. You can change the visualizations with overlays and transparencies. You can share it more easily. You can switch the basemap, or background, to satellite imagery of the Earth at night.”

From the start, students have been key to the project’s success. Undergraduates bring a natural fascination with Roman and medieval history, McCormick said, but many struggle to make meaningful early academic contributions in the field, given the need for proficiency in multiple languages including Greek, Latin, Arabic, and Syriac — not to mention all the must-read secondary literatures in German, Italian, French, and Spanish.

To work on MAPS, however, all they need is curiosity, attention to detail, and facility with spreadsheets. “This is a real intellectual contribution to our understanding of the human past which they can, should, and do cite among their publications,” McCormick said.

“My litmus test has been: Could a nerdy 12-year-old use it? Because if a nerdy 12-year-old can use it, then anybody can.” Anika Liv Christensen, MAPS research assistant

“The undergrads working on the project now are younger than the project,” quipped Pardo Sánchez, who made his first MAPS contributions as an undergraduate, cataloguing findings from McCormick’s “Origins of the European Economy.” As an undergraduate concentrating in history, Pardo Sánchez later contributed to one of the site’s biggest datasets, nearly 60,000 records of climate events over the past 2,000 years.

Today, Anika Liv Christensen ’26, a research assistant currently working on MAPS, says, “It was the perfect job for a 19-year-old with no experience. Originally, my job was to check databases for errors. With so many entries, there are bound to be misspellings and formatting problems.”

Christensen, a joint concentrator in music and human evolutionary biology, recently worked on inventorying atypical burial sites in medieval France, currently with about 300 entries (each with up to five individuals per site).

“My litmus test has been: Could a nerdy 12-year-old use it?” Christensen said. “Because if a nerdy 12-year-old can use it, then anybody can.”

The enormous spreadsheets that populate the site’s map are freely available for download to anybody with an internet connection. The information on Roman roads has proved especially popular, McCormick shared. “There was a whole series of economic studies on 21st-century Europe showing that proximity to Roman roads helped predict economic vibrancy today.”

At a recent MAPS kickoff event, co-managing editor Alexander More , M.A ’07, Ph.D. ’14, an associate professor of environmental health at the University of Massachusetts, demonstrated what it looks like to plot the Roman roads alongside information on bubonic plague outbreaks from the 14th century.

“You can really see the data come alive,” he marveled. “For the first time, you can see the progression of this pandemic throughout Europe, with these hotspots emerging at nexuses of Roman roads.”

As bursts of yellow covered Italy and France, yet another historical intersection came into view. “These nexuses are in fact also the same places where COVID emerged in full force in 2020,” More said.

It will include a selection of federal websites, non-profit and advocacy websites, resources from SGM health clinics in the U.S., blogs, and other digital formats. Development of this collection is guided by current NIH research related to SGM health as well as ongoing initiatives such as the NIH Strategic Plan to Advance Research on the Health and Well-being of Sexual & Gender Minorities (2021–2025) .

NIH defines sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations as those that include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, Two-Spirit, queer, and/or intersex. Individuals with same-sex or -gender attractions or behaviors and those with a difference in sex development are also included. These populations also encompass those who do not self-identify with one of these terms but whose sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or reproductive development is characterized by non-binary constructs of sexual orientation, gender, and/or sex. As noted in the NIH Strategic Plan to Advance Research on the Health and Well-being of Sexual & Gender Minorities, the SGM community traditionally has been underrepresented in clinical research. This has resulted in both a striking deficiency of data on the unique health issues of SGM populations and a lack of tailored prevention strategies, interventions, and treatments to improve SGM health and well-being specifically and to eliminate SGM health disparities.

The Working Group is developing this new collection in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health’s Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office (SGMRO) as subject matter experts—broadly, as we refine the scope of the collection; and specifically, to identify resources to include. SGMRO was established in 2015 to coordinate SGM–related research and activities by working directly with NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices.

In addition to collaborating with SGMRO, the Working Group also welcomes recommendations for the Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) Health web archive from the public for additional content to include or aspects to consider. Recommendations may be emailed to the Working Group at [email protected] .

The National Library of Medicine collects and archives web content documenting current topics in health and medicine in line with the Library’s Collection Development Guidelines , including the influence of factors such as gender and sexuality on access to and quality of health care. The Collection Development Guidelines consider websites, blogs, social media and other web content to play an increasingly important role in documenting the scholarly biomedical record and illustrating a diversity of cultural perspectives in health and medicine.

Analysis of data suggests homosexual behavior in other animals is far more common than previously thought

by Bob Yirka , Phys.org

Meta-analysis of prior research data suggests homosexual behavior in other animals far more common than thought

A team of anthropologists and biologists from Canada, Poland, and the U.S., working with researchers at the American Museum of Natural History, in New York, has found via meta-analysis of data from prior research efforts that homosexual behavior is far more common in other animals than previously thought. The paper is published in PLOS ONE .

For many years, the biology community has accepted the notion that homosexuality is less common in animals than in humans, despite a lack of research on the topic. In this new effort, the researchers sought to find out if such assumptions are true.

The work involved study of 65 studies into the behavior of multiple species of animals, mostly mammals, such as elephants, squirrels, monkeys, rats and racoons.

The researchers found that 76% of the studies mentioned observations of homosexual behavior, though they also noted that only 46% had collected data surrounding such behavior—and only 18.5% of those who had mentioned such behavior in their papers had focused their efforts on it to the extent of publishing work with homosexuality as it core topic.

They noted that homosexual behavior observed in other species included mounting, intromission and oral contact—and that researchers who identified as LGBTQ+ were no more or less likely to study the topic than other researchers.

The researchers point to a hesitancy in the biological community to study homosexuality in other species , and thus, little research has been conducted. They further suggest that some of the reluctance has been due to the belief that such behavior is too rare to warrant further study.

The research team suggests that homosexuality is far more common in the animal kingdom than has been reported—they further suggest more work is required regarding homosexual behaviors in other animals to dispel the myth of rarity.
