Steps To Summarize an Article with ChatGPT 

Here’s how to use ChatGPT to summarize an article in a few minutes using the right prompts. 

Step 1: Find the Article to Copy/Paste on ChatGPT

Start with finding the article you wish to summarize. Open a separate tab for it. Log in to OpenAI on another tab. If you don’t have an account, you can set up one within minutes. 

If you’re using ChatGPT-3.5 or ChatGPT-4, you must provide the chatbot with the article’s raw material to create a summary. Copy the article from the webpage and paste it on the message bar of the tool’s homepage.

Now, here is an interesting thing. If you have an account on ChatGPT Plus or 4o, you don’t have to go through the copy-and-paste hassle because these models can browse the internet. Just shift to the Web Browsing model and paste your article’s URL. That’s about it! 

Step 2: Ask ChatGPT to Summarize

Now, this is the tricky part. You need to create your prompt correctly to ensure that you get your desired summary. 

A prompt as general as ‘summarize the article above’ will leave some room for error, and you won’t get the desired results. So, how should you start? 

Option 1: A Summary With a Word Limit 

Suppose you want to summarize this article: The New Marketer’s Guide To Writing High-Quality ChatGPT Prompts . To do that, you should copy/paste the article’s body on ChatGPT and add a prompt similar to: 

“I want you to summarize this article in detail. Please write a summary of 200 to 300 words.”  

At times, giving a word range works. But sometimes, the additional requests backfire. Here is what you may get from ChatGPT after you have given the word limit criteria.

Your prompt must be specific, accurate, and clear. 

Option 2: Summarize a Marketing Article for a Magazine 

If you want a summary of a marketing article but for a magazine, here is what you can ask ChatGPT to do. 

“Imagine that you are a content writer for a magazine and have to summarize the article, What is Global Marketing? See 13 Businesses with Brilliant Strategies , incorporating a few bullet points. Please write a summary that grabs the attention of the reader .”

For this prompt, ChatGPT may give you the following reply:

Option 3: Summarize a Marketing Report 

Suppose you have a long marketing report article on hand that you want to review in a few minutes. In that case, you wouldn’t want to miss out on any facts or statistics from the document.  

Let’s take HubSpot’s 2024 State of Marketing & Trends Report as an example. Your ChatGPT prompt should be something like this:

“ Summarize this marketing report in 200 words. I need the tone to be formal. Also, don’t miss out on any crucial facts.”

If you aren’t satisfied with the summary but don’t want to change your initial prompt, you can select the Regenerate Response option for a better summary.

Is ChatGPT an Ideal Tool To Summarize an Article? 

Crafting effective prompts can help ChatGPT understand your request better. It is all about focusing on your questions and breaking down your requests to get those perfectly AI-curated summaries of your articles. 

However, even if your prompt hits the right spot, ChatGPT could still present its limitations. Here are a few hurdles that you may face when summarizing your article with this AI tool. 

Token Limits with Free ChatGPT Models 

The free ChatGPT models have tokens limited to 4,096 tokens , which makes around 3,000 words. If your article is long or can’t be summarized within this limit, you may have issues using the tool correctly for the job. 

Don’t Trust the Facts Blindly

You may trust ChatGPT for its great features. However, the chatbot is prone to mistakes and hallucinations, meaning it makes things up on its own. Many users have reported that ChatGPT provides false information, and it does that so confidently that it sounds true.

According to Vectara’s research, ChatGPT technology fabricates things about 3% of the time when summarizing facts. 

So, to be on the safe side, check the facts before believing the summary word by word. 

ChatGPT Can’t Summarize PDF Articles 

If your article is in a PDF, unfortunately, the free version of ChatGPT won’t be able to summarize it. However, ChatGPT Plus subscribers can overcome this limitation easily. 

Paid versions have a “PDF summarization” feature that easily summarizes PDF files. All you have to do is upload the PDF on ChatGPT and get its summary in a few seconds. 

ChatGPT Believes in Oversimplification 

This limitation is great for anyone who requires a simple, basic summary. But if you need an article’s summary without crucial facts missing, you may have to read the article to ensure that its summarized version briefly mentions everything. 

Conclusion 

ChatGPT has all the features to summarize your marketing materials in minutes. You just need to enter the right prompts to allow the chatbot to generate an outstanding summary. This means you must be precise with your requirements, such as the summary’s word count, tone, style, etc.

By addressing challenges related to biases, interpretability, and plagiarism, this commentary offers insights and recommendations for the responsible and ethical use of ChatGPT. In recent years, the field of NLP has witnessed remarkable advancements, bringing us closer to the realm of humanlike language generation. Among these advancements, ChatGPT, based on the groundbreaking GPT-3.5 architecture developed by OpenAI, stands as an impressive language model capable of generating coherent and contextually relevant text responses. With its ability to understand and respond to user inputs, ChatGPT has opened up new possibilities for various applications, including research and publication. 1 – 3

The traditional process of conducting research and publishing scientific papers has been significantly transformed by the emergence of ChatGPT. Researchers and authors can now leverage the power of this sophisticated language model to streamline and enhance their workflow, leading to improved efficiency and higher-quality publications. However, using ChatGPT effectively in the research and publication domain requires a comprehensive understanding of its capabilities, limitations, and best practices.

In this commentary I offer my thoughts for a step-by-step guide for researchers and authors who seek to harness the potential of ChatGPT in their research endeavors and publication efforts. By exploring various aspects, such as data preprocessing, fine-tuning techniques, prompt engineering, and ethical considerations, this guide will equip researchers with the necessary knowledge to harness the full potential of ChatGPT in their scientific pursuits. Moreover, this commentary will delve into the challenges associated with using ChatGPT for research and publication, including biases, interpretability, and concerns regarding plagiarism. By addressing these challenges directly, I aim to provide researchers with valuable insights and recommendations to navigate these important issues and ensure the responsible and ethical use of ChatGPT as a research tool. 4

The significance of my guide lies in its potential to bridge the gap between the rapid progress of language models like ChatGPT and the research and publication process. By elucidating the intricacies of integrating ChatGPT into scientific workflows, researchers will be empowered to leverage this advanced technology effectively, thereby enhancing the overall quality and impact of their research output. 5 In the following sections, I present a comprehensive overview of the steps involved in using ChatGPT for research and publication.

Step 1: Title and Title Page Creation by ChatGPT

ChatGPT can be a valuable tool in generating titles for research papers. Its ability to understand and generate humanlike text allows it to analyze and synthesize information provided by researchers to craft concise and impactful titles. By leveraging its vast knowledge base and language capabilities, ChatGPT can assist in capturing the essence of a research paper, conveying the main focus and contributions succinctly. Researchers can collaborate with ChatGPT by providing relevant information, such as the subject, objectives, methodology, and key findings of their study. ChatGPT can then generate multiple title options, offering different perspectives and angles that researchers can consider. This collaboration with ChatGPT can save time and stimulate creativity, helping researchers refine their titles to accurately represent their work and engage potential readers. ChatGPT can then be used to create the entire title page and then can also customize based on each journal’s recommendations.

Thus, we see that ChatGPT can write an entire title page based on just the title and author details. We notice that ChatGPT has created an email address that is incorrect and needs manual rectification. However, the rest of the title page, including keywords and the running title, is appropriate.

Step 2: Abstract/Summary Creation by chatGPT

ChatGPT can assist in condensing complex information into a clear and engaging abstract/summary, helping researchers communicate the significance and novelty of their research to a wider audience. By leveraging the language proficiency of ChatGPT, researchers can save time and effort in crafting abstracts while ensuring that the key aspects of their study are accurately represented.

In this example, we demonstrate that ChatGPT can create an entire abstract just by using the title alone. However, the more information researchers provide (preferably the entire body of the paper should be entered into chatGPT), the more accurate the abstract becomes.

Step 3: Introduction Creation by ChatGPT

By collaborating with ChatGPT, researchers can provide key information, such as the background, significance, and objectives of their study. ChatGPT can then generate a well-structured introduction that sets the context, highlights the relevance of the research, and outlines the paper’s objectives. Also, ChatGPT can be used to generate keywords and generate an abbreviations list from the article by using prompts. However, it is important to note that the generated introduction should be reviewed, customized, and refined by the researchers to align with their specific study and writing style.

In the example below, we note that ChatGPT has not only created an introduction but also the objectives of the study, which can then be edited by the human author.

Step 4: Can ChatGPT Create a Literature Review?

Yes, ChatGPT can help generate a literature review, but it is important to note that it may not have access to the most up-to-date research articles and studies due to copyrights and limited access to some journals. Additionally, a literature review typically requires a comprehensive analysis of multiple sources, so the generated response may not cover all relevant studies. Nonetheless, it can assist in providing a basic literature review on a given topic, which will need human authors to add to and edit it.

As we can see, ChatGPT is not as good at giving a detailed review of the literature as it is at summarizing contents or creating an introduction. Thus, its use is limited, if there is any at all, in this section of the paper.

Step 5: Can ChatGPT Assist in Brainstorming the Methodology of Studies?

ChatGPT can be a helpful tool in conceptualizing the methodology for research papers. By engaging in a conversation with ChatGPT, researchers can discuss their research objectives, study design, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques. ChatGPT’s natural language understanding allows it to provide suggestions and insights based on its knowledge base and understanding of research methodologies. Although ChatGPT can assist in generating ideas and providing guidance, it is important for researchers to critically evaluate and adapt the suggestions to align with their specific research goals and requirements.

Although the methodology is something that is unique to each paper and needs a human researcher to conceptualize it, we see in this example that ChatGPT can assist by giving ideas and examples based on the input of the title by the human researcher. Thus, ChatGPT can be part of brainstorming sessions when conceptualizing a study, although this section needs significant editing by a human, unlike the introduction or summary.

Step 6: Do Not Use ChatGPT for Fabricating Patient Data or Results!

This section of the paper must be authentic, and ChatGPT has a limited role, if any, because patient data have to be original. ChatGPT also currently cannot analyze clinical data compared with statistical software, like SPSS Statistics and Base SAS. However, Microsoft appears to be developing an Excel copilot that uses AI to create graphs and plots, and its use needs to be evaluated once it is released to the public. 6

Step 7: Discussion and Conclusions

This section of the paper can be generated by ChatGPT if all results are pasted as input; however, this section also needs manual editing because inaccuracies are common. By discussing their research with ChatGPT, researchers can also identify potential limitations, discuss the broader implications of their findings, and propose future research directions. Although ChatGPT can generate suggestions and facilitate the thought process, it is important for researchers to critically evaluate the information provided and ensure that the Discussion and Conclusion sections align with the specific research objectives and findings of their study. Ultimately, ChatGPT can serve as a supportive tool in developing a comprehensive and well-rounded discussion and conclusion for research papers.

Step 8: References

As per the author's experience, although ChatGPT is capable of creating references for an article, most of them are incorrect. So, using ChatGPT for creating references is not recommended. However, ChatGPT can convert references into any journaling style if the references are entered into ChatGPT and it is asked to convert them into a specific style.

Disadvantages of Using ChatGPT in Research

Although ChatGPT offers numerous advantages for assisting in the writing of research papers, there are also some important potential disadvantages to consider:

  • Lack of domain expertise: ChatGPT is a general-purpose language model trained on a diverse range of Internet text, which means it may lack the specific domain expertise required for certain research topics. It may generate responses that are not accurate or well informed in specialized fields, potentially leading to incorrect or misleading information in research papers.
  • Inconsistency and variability: ChatGPT’s responses can be inconsistent and vary depending on the input phrasing or prompt formulation. This can lead to unpredictability in generating reliable and coherent content, requiring additional effort to refine and ensure accuracy in research papers.
  • Limited control over output: Although researchers can guide the model’s responses through prompts, ChatGPT’s generation process is still primarily autonomous. Researchers have limited control over the precise content and structure of the generated text, which may require careful editing and review to align with specific research goals, standards, and above all, accuracy.
  • Biases and ethical considerations: Language models like ChatGPT can inadvertently reflect biases present in the training data. These biases may perpetuate existing societal or cultural biases in research papers, potentially leading to unfair or discriminatory content. The careful examination and mitigation of biases are crucial to ensure ethical and unbiased research output. 7
  • Lack of interpretability: ChatGPT’s decision-making process is complex and not easily interpretable. Researchers may struggle to understand the reasoning behind the model’s generated responses, making it challenging to assess the reliability and credibility of the information provided. Ensuring transparency and interpretability in research papers becomes more challenging with such models. ChatGPT should cite the sources for its data, like Google Bard does.
  • Plagiarism concerns: Because of its vast training data from the Internet, ChatGPT may inadvertently generate text that resembles or replicates existing content without proper citation or attribution. Researchers must be cautious about unintentional plagiarism and ensure that generated content is appropriately referenced and original. So, all ChatGPt-generated articles need to be double checked using antiplagiarism software.

In this commentary I have provided a comprehensive step-by-step guide for researchers and authors on harnessing the power of ChatGPT in the realm of research and publication. By exploring crucial aspects, such as data preprocessing, fine-tuning techniques, prompt engineering, and ethical considerations, the guide equips researchers with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively integrate ChatGPT into their scientific workflows. 8

Through clear instructions, examples, and guidelines, researchers can navigate the complexities of using ChatGPT, leading to enhanced productivity and improved quality in their research output. However, and to reiterate, I cannot overemphasize that ChatGPT has, at present, many disadvantages, including inconsistencies, bias, and plagiarism concerns, that must be addressed by the human author before the article is submitted for publication to a journal, as well as prior to publication, because the human author(s) is solely responsible for their research integrity and accurate reporting.

In conclusion, I have attempted to provide researchers with a comprehensive understanding of how to effectively leverage ChatGPT for research and publication purposes. It has also highlighted the problems and precautions that the human author(s) must take before publishing ChatGPT-generated content. By embracing this step-by-step guide, researchers can unlock the full potential of ChatGPT, driving scientific progress and shaping the future of research and publications.

Find a digital article to summarize and copy the URL.

Paste the URL of the source material in the message box, and ask ChatGPT to summarize the contents of the link.

Note: While the multimodal AI model GPT-4o will eventually replace GPT-3.5, it's currently still rolling out to all users. If you're using GPT-3.5, you'll need to copy and paste your digital source material in the message box.

Find an article to summarize

Find the body of text you want ChatGPT to summarize, and keep it open in a separate tab. You'll need this later. 

Log in to OpenAI

Ask ChatGPT to summarize an article 

ChatGPT can't directly browse the internet (unless you're a paid subscriber), so you'll need to feed it with the raw material it needs before asking it to generate a summary. 

Copy the relevant text of your digital source material. 

Paste the text in the message bar of ChatGPT's home page, add " Summarize the article above " to the end of your query, and hit Enter .

If you're using GPT-4 or GPT-4o, there's no need for the copy-and-paste step. Instead, paste the URL of your source material into the message bar and ask ChatGPT to summarize it. 

If you're not satisfied with the response, you can click Regenerate response to get a ChatGPT to try again. Or you can modify your prompt. 

How to write an effective ChatGPT article summary prompt

1. tell it how long the response should be .

To ensure the summary is short and sweet, add a character limit or a range of acceptable lengths to your prompt. For example,  "The summary should be 125 characters max" (this is equivalent to roughly a half page of text, double-spaced, using 12-point font) or "Write a 150–300-word summary of this article."

Sometimes, it's helpful to include the desired length of ChatGPT's response in your initial prompt. Other times, it's not. (Remember how I said ChatGPT's ability to summarize text is hit or miss?) Here's an example from the first time I asked it to summarize the final episode of The Good Place using a maximum of 125 characters.

Technically, ChatGPT did exactly what I asked it to do—but it took "summarize" to the extreme. In this case, I modified the prompt and removed the character limit, which gave me a slightly better response. (But there aren't nearly enough specifics for my liking.)

At the end of the day, you'll have to play around with what details work for each prompt. 

2. Specify what to include in your article summary

A clear prompt with sufficient detail is key to getting the response you want from ChatGPT. 

Let's say I want to know what happens to each main character in the series finale of The Good Place. For that, I'd prompt ChatGPT with, "Try again, but tell me what happens to each main character."

Now that's the kind of spoiler summary I'm looking for. 

Limitations of summarizing articles with ChatGPT 

ChatGPT is still fairly new, so there are a couple of things you should keep in mind when using it to summarize articles. 

Oversimplification. Since ChatGPT lacks critical-thinking skills, it has a tendency to strip away important details and subtle nuances presented in the source material, leaving you with a less-than-complete understanding. For something trivial like getting summaries of spoilers for pure entertainment, this isn't a huge concern. But if you're using ChatGPT to summarize an article that you'll reference in, say, a college dissertation, I strongly recommend reading the article in its entirety so you don't miss out on crucial details or nuance.

OpenAI is constantly updating existing features and adding new functionality, so it's understandable if you're confused about what ChatGPT can and can't do. Here are answers to the most common questions about how to summarize with ChatGPT.

Can ChatGPT summarize a pdf?

ChatGPT can summarize a PDF and answer questions about the PDF, but this feature is available only to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. 

It's worth noting, though, that in my experience, the quality of ChatGPT's responses varies depending on the length, complexity, and formatting of the file. For example, when I asked ChatGPT to summarize a PDF that contained headings, it generated a formatted list of key talking points along with a one-sentence summary of each point. When I asked ChatGPT to summarize a PDF with the same content, but no headings, it generated only a vague, one-paragraph summary. 

Can ChatGPT summarize videos?

With the introduction of the new multimodal AI model, GPT-4o, this answer may change—but it's too new to say for certain.

Can ChatGPT summarize a website?

Yes, but there are limitations. If you ask ChatGPT to summarize a website containing content that requires a subscription—for example, an article from the New York Times —ChatGPT won't be able to summarize it. This feature is also available only to paid users.

Hi! In this tutorial, I will show you how to use ChatGPT to summarize a research paper .

Since ChatGPT cannot access an external URL, we cannot give it the link to a research paper along with a summary instruction prompt.

Therefore, we will need to make use of ChatGPT Summary for Chrome extension . The installation and usage of the extension are straightforward, but if you need assistance, then take a look at this tutorial article .

In order to be able to use ChatGPT Summary for Chrome extension to summarize a research paper, the paper has to be hosted online and be in the form of a web article because, from my experience, it cannot summarize a hosted PDF document .

The research paper we will summarize in this tutorial is from ScienceDirect . It is a paper about artificial intelligence and unemployment in high-tech developed countries. You can access the paper here .

  Now that we have accessed the research paper, we can ask ChatGPT to summarize it for us. First, though, we will need to make a slight modification to the prompt.  

Modify Summary Prompt

The default prompt that comes with the ChatGPT Summary for Chrome extension instructs ChatGPT to summarize an article into 5 main points.

In our case, we want it to summarize the research paper as one short paragraph. Therefore, we will adjust the prompt setting to reflect that.

So, go to the extension icon on your Google Chrome browser menu bar, right-click on it, and select “Options”. In the prompt area, enter the following prompt: Summarize the main points of the paper as one short paragraph and click “Save Prompt”.

  With that, ChatGPT should summarize the research paper in a short paragraph as instructed.

Now that we have adjusted our prompt instruction, it is time to run the extension on the research paper.

Simply go back to the research paper and click the ChatGPT Summary for Chrome extension icon, and it will automatically summarize the paper in a popup widget like so.

For example, you can upload a PDF file, and ask ChatGPT to give an analysis of the document, or to summarize it, and ask questions specifically related to the document itself. The great thing about this is that the contents of the document don’t matter, ChatGPT will figure that out and analyze it accordingly, whether the PDF is a resume, recipe, cookbook, music tablature or notation, book, guides, document, charts, presentations, or whatever else.

Note: be aware that you are uploading the PDF file to OpenAI for ChatGPT to analyze it, so you likely will not want to use this feature with sensitive documents, information, or any classified or top secret material to you or others.

How to Analyze a PDF with ChatGPT

We’re assuming you’re using the native ChatGPT client for Mac, but you can do this through the web too:

  • Open ChatGPT for Mac, and then click on the paperclip icon next to the text entry box
  • Select the PDF you wish to upload and have ChatGPT summarize and analyze for you
  • Type in a request associated with the PDF file, like “analyze this document for me”, then hit return
  • Soon, ChatGPT will analyze the document, telling you what it appears to be, and what it includes, and offering to provide more specific information about aspects or sections of the document
  • Continue your queries to ChatGPT to analyze the document, with commands like the following examples:
  • How many pages is the document?
  • What are the main points in this document?
  • Rewrite the document in simpler terms

If you use the free version of ChatGPT, as many of us do, you’ll be a bit more limited in how many times you can interact with ChatGPT and the document with GPT 4o, but paid users can continue chats with attachments and documents for longer. Otherwise, you simply have to wait a day to be able to continue for free with GPT 4o analysis.

In the example provided, I uploaded a guitar tablature PDF, which it correctly identified, as well as the song and information about the notation, and upon request gave me additional information about the PDF. Pretty neat, right?

Cool, i have personal love letters on my MBP ’12 from an old flame of mine named Taylor Swifters before she became the largest multinational corporation by revenue, i just wonder if that would be her soft cotton lipped voice?

Would have been nice if Apple was not so preditory by excluding older but MacOS and still covered by AppleCare machine that have Intel processors. My MacPro 7.1 Desktop that is still under AppleCare, now two and a half years old, that I paid $8000 for with GPU and drive upgrades, will not run it, and most of Sonora’s new features will not be compatible either. My only option so far is to buy a new machine.

The same exact machine I have now, but having a motherboard with Apple Silicon processor without the additions I added, is now $8000 as a base price.

It is OpenAI’s decision to make ChatGPT for Apple Silicon only, not Apple’s. But Apple made the decision to only include Apple Silicon Mac’s to support the new AI features in MacOS Sequoia.

Here's how ChatGPT describes the approach: "GPT-4o in free mode provides basic and essential citations, focusing on quick and concise references to ensure information is traceable. In contrast, GPT-4o in paid mode offers enhanced, detailed, and frequent citations, including multiple sources and contextual annotations to provide comprehensive verification and understanding of the information. This ensures a robust and reliable experience, especially beneficial for users requiring in-depth information and thorough source verification."

Even with the provided citations in GPT-4o, there are ways to improve your results.

1. Write a query and ask ChatGPT

To start, you need to ask ChatGPT something that needs sources or citations. I've found it's better to ask a question with a longer answer, so there's more "meat" for ChatGPT to chew on.

Keep in mind that ChatGPT can't provide any information after January 2022 for GPT-3.5, April 2023 for GPT-4, and October 2023 for GPT-4o, and requests for information pre-internet (say, for a paper on Ronald Reagan's presidency) will have far fewer available sources.

Here's an example of a prompt I wrote on a topic that I worked on a lot when I was in grad school:

Describe the learning theories of cognitivism, behaviorism, and constructivism

2. Ask ChatGPT to provide sources

This is where a bit of prompt engineering comes in. A good starting point is with this query:

Please provide sources for the previous answer

I've found that this prompt often provides offline sources, books, papers, etc. The problem with offline sources is you can't check their veracity. Still, it's a starting point. A better query is this:

Please provide URL sources

This prompt specifically tells ChatGPT that you want clickable links to sources. You can also tweak this prompt by asking for a specific quantity of sources, although your mileage might vary in terms of how many you get back:

Please provide 10 URL sources

3. Push ChatGPT to give you higher-quality sources

Most large language models  respond well to detail and specificity . So if you're asking for sources, you can push for higher-quality sources. You'll need to specify that you need reliable and accurate sources. While this approach won't necessarily work, it may remind the AI chatbot to give you more useful responses. For example:

Please provide me with reputable sources to support my argument on... (whatever the topic is you're looking at)

You can also tell ChatGPT the kinds of sources you want. If you're looking for scholarly articles, peer-reviewed journals, books, or authoritative websites, mention these preferences explicitly. For example:

Please recommend peer-reviewed journals that discuss... (and here, repeat what you discussed earlier in your conversation)

When dealing with abstract concepts or theories, request that ChatGPT provide a conceptual framework and real-world examples. Here's an example:

Can you describe the principles of Vygotsky's Social Development Theory and provide real-world examples where these principles were applied, including sources for these examples?

This approach gives you a theoretical explanation and practical instances to trace the original sources or case studies.

Another idea is to use sources that don't have link rot (that is, they're no longer online at the URL that ChatGPT might know). Be careful with this idea, though, because ChatGPT doesn't know about things after January 2022 for GPT-3.5, April 2023 for GPT-4, and October 2023 for GPT-4o. So, while you might be tempted to use a prompt like this:

Please provide me with sources published within the past five years.

Instead, consider using a prompt like this:

Please provide sources published from 2019 through April 2023.

And, as always, don't assume that whatever output ChatGPT gives you is accurate. It's still quite possible the AI will completely fabricate answers, even to the point of making up the names of what seem like academic journals. It's a sometimes helpful tool, but it's also  a fibber .

4. Attempt to verify/validate the provided sources

Keep this golden rule in mind about ChatGPT-provided sources: ChatGPT is more often wrong than right .

Across the many times I've asked ChatGPT for URL sources, roughly half were just plain bad links. Another 25% or more of the links went to topics completely or somewhat unrelated to the one I was trying to source. GPT-4 and GPT-4o are slightly more reliable, but not by much.

For example, I asked for sources on a backgrounder for the phrase "trust but verify,"  generally popularized by US President Ronald Reagan. I got a lot of sources back, but most didn't exist. I got some back that correctly took me to active pages on the Reagan Presidential Library site, but the page topic had nothing to do with the phrase.

I had better luck with my learning theory question from step 1. There, I got back offline texts from people I knew from my studies who had worked on those theories. I also got back URLs. Once again, only about two in 10 worked or were accurate.

Don't despair. The idea isn't to expect ChatGPT to provide sources that you can immediately use. If you instead think of ChatGPT as a research assistant, it will give you some great starting places. Use the names of the articles (which may be completely fake or just not accessible) and drop them into Google. That process will give you some interesting search queries that probably lead to interesting material that can legitimately go into your research.

Also, keep in mind that you're not limited to using ChatGPT. Don't forget all the tools available to researchers and students. Do your own web searches. Check with primary sources and subject-matter experts if they're available. If you're in school, you can even ask your friendly neighborhood librarian for help.

Don't forget that there are many excellent traditional sources. For example, Google Scholar and JSTOR  provide access to a wide range of academically acceptable resources you can cite with reasonable confidence.

One final point: if you merely cut and paste ChatGPT sources into your research, you're likely to get stung. Use the AI for clues, not as a way to avoid the real work of research.

How do you put sources in APA format? 

APA style is a citation style that's often required in academic programs. APA stands for American Psychological Association. I've often thought they invented these style rules to get more customers. The definitive starting point for APA style is the Purdue OWL , which provides a wide range of style guidelines.

Be careful: online style formatters might not do a complete job, and you may get your work returned by your professor. It pays to do the work yourself -- and be careful doing it.

How can I make ChatGPT provide more reliable sources for its responses?

This is a good question. I have found that sometimes -- sometimes -- if you ask ChatGPT to give you more sources or re-ask for sources, it will give you new listings. If you tell ChatGPT the sources it provided were erroneous, it will sometimes give you better ones. The bot may also apologize and give excuses. Another approach is to re-ask your original question with a different focus or direction, and then ask for sources for the new answer.

Once again, my best advice is to avoid treating ChatGPT as a tool that writes for you and more as a writing assistant. Asking for sources to cut and paste a ChatGPT response is pretty much plagiarism. That said, using ChatGPT's responses, and any sources you can tease out, as clues for further research and writing is a legitimate way to use this tool.

For some links, it's just link rot. Some links may have changed, since many sources are more than three years old. Other sources are of indeterminate age. Since we don't have a full listing of ChatGPT's sources, it's impossible to tell how valid they are or were.

14 ways to get better at using ChatGPT: Comprehensive prompt guide

  • ChatGPT has taken the world by storm — but some struggle to get the chatbot to do what they want.
  • Insider asked AI enthusiasts how they interact with the chatbot to produce desirable outputs.
  • Here are 14 tips for crafting the best ChatGPT prompts, from assigning it a persona to being polite.

Since launching over a year ago, ChatGPT has become seemingly omnipresent.

At work, people have used the OpenAI product to develop code , generate marketing materials , and create lesson plans . It's become so popular that companies are now hiring workers who have ChatGPT expertise to boost their bottom lines. 

And in their everyday lives, people are turning to the chatbot for help with losing weight , landing dates , and delaying aging.

But ChatGPT doesn't always produce desirable outcomes, and the tech can be prone to errors and misinformation.

It all comes down to the prompts users put into ChatGPT. 

"If you really want to generate something that is going to be useful for you, you need to do more than just write a generic sentence," Jacqueline DeStefano-Tangorra, a consultant who uses ChatGPT to secure new contracts, told Insider . 

Insider sifted through AI research and asked AI enthusiasts, ChatGPT coaches, and workers who use the chatbot for tips on how to get ChatGPT to do what you want.

Here are 12 ways you can write better ChatGPT prompts. 

1. assign chatgpt a specific  role.

ChatGPT works best when you assign it a persona — such as a specific job role — Jason Gulya, an AI council chair at Berkeley College who teaches clients how to use ChatGPT, said.

Rob Cressy, the founder of the AI-coaching firm GPT Leaders, told Insider to "talk to ChatGPT like an employee" to help accomplish particular goals or tasks.

To do this, Gulya suggests that users write a prompt that includes a specific, concrete description of the persona you want the chatbot to take on. Begin your prompt with "act as a professor" or "act as a marketing professional," followed by a description of the desired outcome.

2. Be specific — and only give the bot one task at a time

Once you give ChatGPT a role, craft the prompt so it can accomplish a singular task such as writing a 300-word cover letter or generating a recipe for a protein-packed dinner.

"Don't ask it to do too much at once," Cressy said.

If you're a marketing professional, and you want ChatGPT to build a list of emails, Peggy Dean, an artist who runs a ChatGPT course for creatives , recommends crafting what she calls a "power prompt," a concise and detailed prompt.

If asking ChatGPT to brief a marketing campaign, she said she'd include target audiences, key features, and calls to action.

If asking the chatbot to come up with an email list and calls to action, she said she'd say:

"Pretend you are an expert email marketer and your client is a [role] specializing in [offerings] for [target audience]. Your goal is to build a robust email list in order to accomplish [goal]. Your client uses [platform(s)] to reach their audience. Come up with [details or quantity] ideal call to action ideas of [freebies or lead magnets] your client can provide."

"It's crucial to have a clear idea of what you hope to achieve," Dean told Insider. 

3. Refine your prompts based on a previous outputs

If ChatGPT's response isn't quite what you're looking for, Cressy said to build on its output by fine-tuning the initial prompt. He calls this process "peeling back an onion." 

"Don't be afraid to refine your prompts," DeStefano-Tangorra said. "If the initial output doesn't match your expectation, rephrase the prompt, add more detail, or clarify the context." 

If the answer to a prompt asking ChatGPT to "suggest a good book" is too vague, refine it to something like: "As someone who loves mystery novels with strong female leads, like Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series, can you suggest other similar books that I may enjoy?" 

4. Provide context 

ChatGPT prompts should include context such as historical information, user profiles, preferences, or any relevant details to guide its response, DeStefano-Tangorra said. The more specific, the better. 

Asking ChatGPT to "suggest dinner recipes," will lead to a generic output. Instead, DeStefano-Tangorra suggests tweaking that prompt to say: "As someone who loves trying out new cuisines and has a particular fondness of spicy food, can you suggest an exciting dinner menu for my next weekend get-together with my friends?"

If you want to apply ChatGPT to your business, Cressy suggests creating a "best-practices document" that includes details on who you are, what you do, and what your brand voice sounds like. That way, users can copy and paste the information into the chatbot whenever they start a new conversation. 

Instead of asking ChatGPT to "create me a marketing strategy" the prompt should say "I am a world-class [role] who helps [target audience] for business growth. Our brand voice is friendly, positive, inspiring, brand-safe, conversational. Create me a marketing strategy to help build my brand on Facebook and Instagram by leveraging my podcast." 

5. Break down the desired output into a series of steps

While it's best for prompts to be specific and include context, writing a long prompt can be counterproductive, Gulya said. 

"More often than not, a long mega-prompt does not give the desirable output," he said.

To avoid this, Gulya suggests breaking down the desired output into a series of steps. That way, if the chatbot generates errors, the user can pinpoint what exactly the chatbot may not understand. 

" This allows you to validate each step before proceeding, course-correcting when necessary," Gulya said. 

If the goal is to use ChatGPT to generate a widely read blog post, the user should ask the chatbot to first research which SEO terms will most likely make the article appear at the top of search-engine results. In a separate prompt, ask it to apply what it learned to the blog post.

6. Ask ChatGPT for advice on how to prompt it better 

To ensure your prompt is as thorough as it can be, Dean suggested asking ChatGPT what other details it needs from the user to produce the best output.

To do this, Dean suggests adding a line to your prompt that follows this template: "If I want to [desired outcome], what prompts should I share with ChatGPT in order to get the best results?" 

Once ChatGPT has generated an output, tell the chatbot what you like and dislike about the output and ask it to "request additional results, edits, or tweaks," she said.

7. Prioritize clarity and precision 

DeStefano-Tangorra suggests that ChatGPT users "explicitly outline your expectations within the prompt" by adding precise words. 

"Clear and specific prompts lead to more relevant and useful responses," she said. 

The prompt "compare and contrast using an oven versus a microwave for preparing dinner," should be tweaked to "can you compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of using a traditional oven versus a microwave for preparing a family dinner?" 

8. Use a thesaurus

To write your prompt with precision, Anna Bernstein, a prompt engineer at the generative-AI writing tool Copy.ai, suggests using a thesaurus to find the words that can increase your chances of getting what you want out of the chatbot. 

"Don't give up on a concept just because your first prompt didn't get the result you wanted," Bernstein previously told Insider . "Often, finding the right word or phrasing can unlock what you're doing."

9. Pay attention to verbs  

A thesaurus can help you find verbs that clearly express your intent. That way, the AI has a better chance of fully understanding your request, Bernstein said. 

She said that a prompt including the phrase "condense this" is stronger than "rewrite this to be shorter."

10. Be polite, but direct 

While ChatGPT users may have different conversational styles, Gulya said he finds that talking to the AI using polite, direct language — as if he's writing to a friend — yields the best results.

"Doing so puts me in a more collaborative, more flexible mindset," he said. 

When interacting with the chatbot for, say, advice on how college professors can enhance their skillsets, Gulya suggests writing flattering comments such as, "You're magnificent at seeing the root causes in faculty member's anxieties about artificial intelligence."

After the chatbot spits out a response you like, express gratitude by saying something like, "This is great. Thank you so much!" followed by a request to make revisions to its output.

11.Talk to ChatGPT with emotional language

If talking to ChatGPT like a friend doesn't produce desirable results, try adding some emotion to your prompts.  

A study conducted by a team of researchers from Microsoft, William & Mary, and research centers across Asia found that adding phrases like "This is very important to my career" and "You'd better be sure" to ChatGPT prompts yield better responses. 

ChatGPT users can also try writing prompts with phrases like "You'd better be sure," "Take pride in your work and give it your best," and "Remember that progress is made one step at a time. Stay determined and keep moving forward." 

12. Check and tweak the copy's tone and reading level 

If you're using ChatGPT to generate copy or captions for social media posts, make sure to tweak its tone so the content resonates with your target audience, Ashley Couto, a marketing professional who uses the chatbot to reduce her workload, told Business Insider.  

Couto finds that the best marketing copy reads at a fifth- or sixth-grade level, which includes "short sentences and paragraphs, a conversational tone, and simple language." 

To do this, Couto recommends asking ChatGPT to "change the reading level and tone" after it spits out a response. 

13. Feed ChatGPT an outline 

If you want ChatGPT to generate longer posts, Couto suggests giving the AI a specific structure and outline. She said the more specific you can be with your instructions, the better its output will be. 

Here's one prompt Couto uses to generate a company blog post:

"Following this story structure — 1. Capture the heart, 2. Set up a tension, 3. Resolve the tension, 4. Conclude by offering value — write a 1,000-word story at a grade-five reading level in the first person using the following information."

14. Include reference text 

Is ChatGPT making up answers that are factually incorrect? If so, adding bodies of text from trusted sources into the prompt may help eliminate these hallucinations. 

OpenAI's prompt guide suggests copying and pasting articles into ChatGPT, and then asking the chatbot to answer questions based on them.

An example of a prompt OpenAI provides is "Use the provided articles delimited by triple quotes to answer questions. If the answer cannot be found in the articles, write 'I could not find an answer.' After that, insert the text from the article below, followed by the questions you want ChatGPT to answer."

Synthesizing and evaluating inconsistent medical evidence is essential in evidence-based medicine. This study aimed to employ ChatGPT as a sophisticated scientific reasoning engine to identify conflicting clinical evidence and summarize unresolved questions to inform further research.

We evaluated ChatGPT’s effectiveness in identifying conflicting evidence and investigated its principles of logical reasoning. An automated framework was developed to generate a PubMed dataset focused on controversial clinical topics. ChatGPT analyzed this dataset to identify consensus and controversy, and to formulate unsolved research questions. Expert evaluations were conducted 1) on the consensus and controversy for factual consistency, comprehensiveness, and potential harm and, 2) on the research questions for relevance, innovation, clarity, and specificity.

The gpt-4-1106-preview model achieved a 90% recall rate in detecting inconsistent claim pairs within a ternary assertions setup. Notably, without explicit reasoning prompts, ChatGPT provided sound reasoning for the assertions between claims and hypotheses, based on an analysis grounded in relevance, specificity, and certainty. ChatGPT’s conclusions of consensus and controversies in clinical literature were comprehensive and factually consistent. The research questions proposed by ChatGPT received high expert ratings.

Our experiment implies that, in evaluating the relationship between evidence and claims, ChatGPT considered more detailed information beyond a straightforward assessment of sentimental orientation. This ability to process intricate information and conduct scientific reasoning regarding sentiment is noteworthy, particularly as this pattern emerged without explicit guidance or directives in prompts, highlighting ChatGPT’s inherent logical reasoning capabilities.

This study demonstrated ChatGPT’s capacity to evaluate and interpret scientific claims. Such proficiency can be generalized to broader clinical research literature. ChatGPT effectively aids in facilitating clinical studies by proposing unresolved challenges based on analysis of existing studies. However, caution is advised as ChatGPT’s outputs are inferences drawn from the input literature and could be harmful to clinical practice.
