Selfiee movie review: Akshay Kumar gets up, close and personal with his superstardom in this mass entertainer

Selfiee review: if you are fine with akshay kumar continuing to do hindi remakes of films from the south, you would definitely enjoy selfiee..

Not very long ago we saw Ayushmann Khurrana play a superstar in An Action Hero , where an upcoming youth icon wanting to take a selfie with the actor ends up dead, and his brother lectures the superstar that all he is is because of public, so if they want a selfie, actors need to oblige. Cut to Akshay Kumar 's latest theatrical release Selfiee, where the actor plays a superstar and ends up in a murky mess of sorts with his biggest fan. All this fan desired for was a seflie with his idol, but things take an ugly turn when media gets involved and it becomes a battle of egos and an ultimate fight between a superstar vs his fan.

Selfiee movie review: Akshay Kumar in a still from the film.

An official remake of Malayalam film Driving Licence, this Akshay-starrer dramedy is not a frame by frame copy of the original (I've seen the Malayalam one in bit and parts) and has many lighter moments. Other than the basic storyline, Selfiee has ditched the serious undertones of the original and laced the writing with a lot of humour.

The story follows superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay) who wants a driving licence urgently to be able to finish the climax of his film and save the producer from incurring losses. His diehard fan, RTO officer Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi) is given the task to help the actor, and he agrees to fulfil it without following the usual tedious process and asks for a selfie as a gesture in return. But things don't go as planned and a misunderstanding leads to their feud becoming prime time news, while public has a field day with their juicy fight.

I have somehow always enjoyed watching actors portray superstars onscreen; it's kind of watching a film within a film, so double the fun at the cost of one. And this is seemingly becoming a tried and tested formula for filmmakers. Remember when Om Kapoor, played by Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Shanti Om, became everyone's favourite, or when Vidya Balan brought to life the superstardom of Silk Smitha or even Kangana Ranaut's portrayal of Jayalalithaa during her best days as a superstar -- all these tried to bring to fore various aspects of a star's life and their connection with the common man, too.

With Selfiee, things look more real and relatable because of the story and narrative which is not too far-fetched and is pretty convincing. Selfiee doesn't end at being a feud between a star and an RTO officer, but also covers their emotional side of being a husband, a father and balancing it all with their respective jobs. The screenplay is engaging and doesn't let you have too many dull moments. The original story by Sachy has been written for the Hindi version by Rishabh Sharma and he tweaks it a bit to suit the Hindi audience's palette.

Emraan Hashmi in a still from Selfiee.

Akshay as Vijay gets as close as you could imagine to the superstardom he enjoys in real life. Bearing a charming persona and swag, he shows signs of gratitude for his fans despite being a self-made star. What I loved about Selfiee and which perhaps remains the highlight of the film for me, is Akshay's tendency to be able to take a joke on himself and laugh at it, too. Be it taking a dig at the constant scrutiny on the number of films he does in a year, Hindi films not working not working at the box office of late or a doctor telling him that he needs to do some 'classy films over massy cinema', or even his infamous smile showing his gums , he delivers all of these with so much ease.

It was after over a year that we saw Emraan Hashmi back on the big screen, and he has a pleasant screen presence though at places, he seemed a bit loud and over-the-top. But, maybe that's how some diehard fans of superstars are. That they can't control their emotions on seeing or meeting their 'gods'. In face-off scenes with Akshay, it's commendable to see how Emraan manages to hold his ground.

Among the supporting cast, Mahesh Thakur as Vijay's manager delivers an earnest performance, Meghna Malik as politico Vimla Tiwari is on-point with her comic timing and is given some funny lines. Abhimanyu Singh as Vijay's contemporary is comic relief and hilarious in scenes, but for someone with his acting calibre, he is completely wasted in the script. And so is Paritosh Tripathi and Kusha Kapila, who appear and disappear as per convenience.

And the ladies are once again neglected or have very little to do in the film. Nushrratt Bharuccha as Om Prakash's wife is caring but has a quirky side to her. And even though she doesn't approve of her husband's obsession with a star, she doesn't mind flexing in the front of whole colony when the husband is enjoying his 2 minutes of fame on news channels on TV. Diana Penty as Vijay's wife exists in the script only because there needed to be an emotional arch to the script and that the superstar can use that track to deliver an emotional speech in the climax. Other than that, Diana doesn't really get much scope to perform or showing her acting chops. Even her scenes with Akshay aren't anything great or something that will make you sit and take notice of their chemistry.

Talking of chemistry, I rather liked the song Kudiyee Ni Teri Vibe where Akshay grooves with Mrunal Thakur and the two set the screen on fire. Even the remixed version of Main Khiladi Tu Anari that comes in the end credit is a sure shot party number and not to be missed. In a nutshell, Selfiee ticks most of the boxes that Hindi film audiences look for. So, if you are fine with Akshay Kumar continuing to do Hindi remakes of films from the South, you would definitely enjoy Selfiee, even if you have seen the original Malayalam film. After all, isn't this what everyone is craving for - mass entertainers that can bring audiences back into theatres.

Bollywood has been eyeing superhit films in other industries and remaking them, this scenario is been going on quite often in recent times. Recently there are many films Bollywood has remade and now it’s time for another film which is Selfiee, which is an official remake of the 2019’s Malayalam super hit film Driving Licence. Talking about the Selfiee well, the film starts off intrestingly by setting up the plot and introducing the two main characters.

Raj Mehta the director of Selfiee hasn’t changed anything as he kept all the scenes that the original version has which is a good thing though. Though the film has everything still it doesn’t excite you much coz a lot of people have already watched the original version on OTT. The core point the film may connect with the Hindi audience because it is relatable to every movie lover. Though the narrative has loose ends Akshay Kumar and Emran Hashmi make you glued to the seats.

Akshay Kumar has superstar Vijay Kumar has does a brilliant job as his energy levels is just brilliant, Emran Hashmi as Om Prakash does a brilliant job as we have seen him mostly in romantic films but this middle father role quite new to him and he effortlessly pulled it off, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty does their part well as they doesn’t have much screen time to perform and rest of the cast did their best.

Raj Mehta sticks to the original version in a way he succeeded in presenting the story in quite an engaging way but he went a bit overboard in showing Vijay Kumar’s stardom in the film. Technically, Selfiee is good, and Azeem Dayani’s music is good but the background score should have been better, Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography took the film to next level.

Overall, Selfiee is an honest remake and a must-watch film for all sections of the audience.

Selfiee Review: With Ram Setu, Cutputli, and Rakshabandan all experiencing back-to-back failures, Akshay Kumar is in desperate need of a successful film. He has organized a strong schedule of releases without giving up, and he has just produced a movie called Selfiee. Driving Licence, a Malayalam film, was remade as Selfiee. The fact that Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi share screen time in Selfiee increased expectations, and once the trailer was published, those expectations doubled. Despite the sky-high anticipation, the movie has finally been released. Let’s dive into the review to see if it’s worth seeing.

Om Prakash (Emraan Hashmi), the central character of a tale set in Bhopal, is referred to as the vehicle inspector. He and his kid are ardent Vijay Kumar admirers (Akshay Kumar). Om Prakash wants to take a picture one day, but Vijay Kumar doesn’t seem to care, which hurts Om Prakash’s ego. Eventually, Vijay Kumar loses his driving privileges, and Om Prakash must provide his approval. This miscommunication causes Om Prakash and Vijay Kumar to develop a chilly rivalry. Did Vijay Kumar finally receive permission for his license? Did Om Prakash need to take a selfie for the movie?

Bollywood has been looking at superhit movies from other genres and remaking them; this situation has occurred rather frequently recently. Bollywood has recently reproduced a lot of movies, and now it’s time for another one: Selfiee, an official remake of the hugely successful Malayalam movie Driving Licence from 2019. Speaking of the Selfiee, the narrative is set up and the two main characters are introduced in an interesting way at the beginning of the movie.

In keeping with the original version’s sequences, Selfiee’s director Raj Mehta made no changes to the film, which is a positive thing. Despite having everything, the movie doesn’t particularly excite you because many people have previously seen the original version on OTT. The film’s main message may resonate with the Hindi audience because it is applicable to all cinema fans. Despite the story’s unfinished business, Akshay Kumar and Emran Hashmi keep you firmly seated.

Emran Hashmi as Om Prakash does a brilliant job as we have seen him mostly in romantic films but this middle father role is quite new to him and he effortlessly pulled it off, Nushrratt Bharuccha, and Diana Penty does their part well as they don’t have much screen time to perform, and the rest of the cast did their best. Akshay Kumar has superstar Vijay Kumar have done a brilliant job as his energy levels are just brilliant.

In some ways, Raj Mehta faithfully follows the original script; nonetheless, he went a little too far in highlighting Vijay Kumar’s star power in the movie. Although Selfiee is technically sound and has good music by Azeem Dayani, Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography elevated the film to a higher level.

Overall, Selfiee is a genuine remake and a movie that everyone should see.

Selfiee eyes less than Rs 5 crore at day 1 box office, Akshay Kumar’s woes continue

Selfiee is expected to make less than rs 5 crore on its opening day, marking a new low for akshay kumar..

selfie movie review hit or flop

It doesn’t seem like Akshay Kumar ‘s fortunes are about to change any time soon. After a string of flops in 2022, the actor was hoping to start 2023 on a successful note with this week’s Selfiee. But early box office estimates suggest that the film won’t even be able to match up to the underwhelming performance of his recent flops. According to a forecast by industry analyst firm Ormax Media, Selfiee is expected to earn only Rs 4.8 crore nett on its first day of release. Final numbers are yet to come in.

Industry tracker Sacnilk concurs. The portal is predicting an opening between Rs 4 crore and Rs 5 crore for Selfiee, after low advance sales. Koimoi, meanwhile reported that the film failed to reach Rs 1 crore mark in advance bookings. The film debuted in over 3,000 theatres domestically, and will struggle to deliver a respectable opening unless it gets positive word-of-mouth. But even that is looking unlikely, going by the reviews. The Indian Express ’ Shalini Langer wrote in her review, “The good thing about Selfiee is that it doesn’t pretend to be more than it is. The bad thing about it is that it is not even trying.”

Akshay starred in four back-to-back box office flops last year — Samrat Prithviraj, Bachchhan Paandey, Ram Setu and Raksha Bandhan. He also starred in the thriller Cuttputlli, which was released directly on Disney+ Hotstar.

Bachchhan Paandey actually had a decent Rs 13 crore opening, before tanking due to negative reviews. The period drama Samrat Prithviraj delivered a Rs 10.7 crore opening day, Raksha Bandhan made Rs 8.2 crore and Ram Setu delivered a Rs 15 crore day one haul. His last hit, Rohit Shetty directorial Sooryavanshi, earned over Rs 26 crore on the first day. Akshay attempted a variety of genres, and worked with both reputed directors and relative newcomers on these projects, several of which had big-name producers backing them.

He reflected on the unsuccessful streak at an event last year. He said, “If my films are not working, it is our fault, it is my fault. I have to make the changes, I have to understand what the audience wants. I want to make changes, I want to dismantle my way of working and think what kind of films I should be doing. Nobody else is to be blamed but me.”

Akshay Kumar’s Selfiee is his biggest flop in last 10 years

Film fails to attract audience.

Akshay Kumar’s Selfiee box office collection started with around Rs 2.60 crore, earned Rs 3.75 crore on its second day and has now got Rs 3.90 crore on its third day, according to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk. The film’s total collection after 3 three days stands at around Rs 10 crore.

Selfiee (2023) - IMDb

The three recent Akshay Kumar films – Selfiee, Raksha Bandhan and Samrat Prithviraj – have all failed to perform at the box office and the actor blames no one but himself for his consecutive flops. Owning up to the failure, Akshay Kumar said that it’s time for him to sit back, reflect and change himself according to what the audience needs.

In conversation with Aaj Tak, Akshay Kumar exclaimed that it is not a new phase for him where his work isn’t liked by people. “This is not happening to me for the first time. In my career, I have had 16 consecutive flops at a time. There was a time when I had eight films in a row that did not work. Now, I have had three-four films in a row that did not work,” he accepted.

Akshay turns up his Selfiee game, fan asks why he's wearing 'Ranveer ka jacket' | Bollywood - Hindustan Times

“It happens due to your own fault. The audience has changed, you need to change, and you need to dismantle yourself. You have to start again because the audience demands to see something else,” he said.

Taking things positively, he added, “It is a great alarm. When your films flop in a row, it is an alarm for you that it is time for you to change. I am trying to change, that is all I can do. Do not blame the audience or anyone else. It is my fault, 100%.”

He further went on and said that when an actor selects a script, it’s their responsibility to own up to whatever fate it has. “A film doesn’t flop because the audience didn’t like it. It is because of what you selected. Maybe you have not given the right ingredients in the film,” he concluded.

Akshay Kumar on Selfiee

It is pertinent to note that after the pandemic-induced lockdown and restrictions, Kumar’s BellBottom was the first major film to release in theatres. While that didn’t work, Sooryavanshi, another Kumar film, became the first Hindi box office hit post-pandemic.

Selfiee movie review Akshay Kumar Emraan Hashmi film is not even trying

However, 2022 hasn’t been his year at all in terms of box office numbers. Last year’s Raksha Bandhan and Samrat Prithviraj were box-office duds. His latest outing, Selfiee, released on February 24, made yet another disappointing opening collection of INR 30 million on the first day.

Selfiee Box Office Collection: Akshay Kumar’s Film Declared A Huge Flop, Collects THIS Much On Day 11

Selfiee Box Office Collection: Akshay Kumar's latest film has failed to attract the audiences into the theatres and minted less than a crore for the fifth day in a row.

Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi-starrer Selfiee, which released theatrically on February 24, 2023, has failed to meet the box-office expectations. The film has been declared a box-office disaster and marks Akshay Kumar’s fourth consecutive flop.

Also starring Diana Penty and Nushratt Bharuchha in the lead roles, Selfie has been directed by Raj Mehta. On Day 11, the film collected Rs 0.31 crore. Take a look at the day-wise breakup of Selfiee box-office collection is India:

Selfiee Box Office Collection Day 1: Rs 2.5 crore

Selfiee box office collection day 2: rs 3.8 crore, selfiee box office collection day 3: rs 3.95 crore , selfiee box office collection day 4: rs 1.3 crore , selfiee box office collection day 5: rs 1.1 crore , selfiee box office collection day 6: rs 1.02 crore , selfiee box office collection day 7: rs 0.95 crore , selfiee box office collection day 8: rs 0.34 crore , selfiee box office collection day 9: rs 0.52 crore , selfiee box office collection day 10: rs 0.65 crore , selfiee box office collection day 11: rs 0.31 crore , selfiee box office collection total: rs 16.44 crore (approx.).

Selfie faced a tough clash at the box-office against Shah Rukh Khan’s blockbuster spy-thriller film, Pathaan. The film has so far collected over Rs 500 crore at the Hindi box-office and has emerged as the number 1 Hindi film of all time. Reports indicate that the shows of Selfiee have already been transferred to Pathaan.

Talking about the failure of his films, Akshay Kumar in a recent interview said that there is no one else to be blamed but him. "This is not happening with me for the first time. In my career, I have had 16 consecutive flops at a time. There was a time when I had eight films in a row that did not work. Now, I have had three-four films in a row that did not work. The thing is that it happens due to your own fault, film ka na chalna (a film not working).”

“The audience has changed, you need to change, you need to dismantle yourself. You have to start again because the audience requires to see something else,” Akshay Kumar said in an interview.

On the whole, Selfiee is a very entertaining fare. But the fact that Akshay Kumars recent films have bombed at the box-office with alarming regularity will, of course, take its toll on the business of this film because of the shockingly horrendous opening it has taken. Although the positive word of mouth for the film will see its collections grow, the business in the final tally will not match its merits.

Ratings: 3.5/5 Review By: Dhaval Site:Times Of India

Overall, Selfiee is an easy-breezy watch, with some good performances and several laugh-out-loud moments. If you’re looking for a rib-tickling comedy over the weekend, this one could be a good pick.

Ratings: 2/5 Review By: Saibal Site:NDTV

Script isn’t King inSelfiee. It is an unabashed Akshay Kumar show. The star leaves absolutely nothing to chance. He stamps himself on everything that the vapid film has on offer. The narrative (derived from the late Sachy’s screenplay) is tweaked and stretched to make space for an actor in search of a hit. But nothing clicks.

Ratings: 3/5 Review By: Zinia Site:India Today

The editing is crisp. The background music is on point and the film is enjoyable. The fact that Selfiee has taken the good parts from Driving Licence and given it a touch of its own is what makes this remake a good watch as well. If you are looking for a fun watch this weekend, you have one!

Ratings: 2.5/5 Review By: Shubhra Gupta Site:Indian Express

Selfiee is unpredictable in the choices that Om the quintessential good guy, family man makes. As well as the pressures Vijay the quintessential arrogant star, wannabe parent faces. Hence, where the two will let their egos take them is interesting to follow, with Akshays impatient snapping and quiet seething effective, as is Hashmis helpless adulation. Up to a point. As the film goes on and on, and the fights get ridiculously petty, Vijay and Om are reduced to children who need a good shaking down.

Ratings: — Review By: Anna Site:Firstpost

Selfiee is flashier than Driving Licence with a loud song n dance routine written into the storyline as an introduction for Om Prakash, Akshay given an unnecessarily larger-than-life moment towards the end that pales in comparison with the much more convincing crowd scene Prithviraj dealt with, and a high-glam remix of the hit number Main Khiladi Tu Anari appended in a clich©d fashion to the closing credits but for the most part, it retains the spirit and meaning of the original.

Ratings: 3/5 Review By: Sushmita Dey Site:Times Now

The purpose of any good cinema is to not just entertain but also deliver a wholesome community experience, which is exactly what Selfiee did. But it failed to make a solid impression as Raj Mehta tried hard to inject some melodrama and dollops of grace into the proceedings.

Ratings: 3/5 Review By: Bohini Site:News18

The film does take a stand in favour of the film stars, to show how vulnerable their reputation is in the hands of the media and the public. At the same time, it also highlights the fickle-minded mob, which one day bays for blood and next day worships the same actor, as soon as he manages to gain some sympathy. When Akshay Kumar high-jumps into an angry mob to save Emraan Hashmi, the director makes it clear who the real hero is. Its the star who wins, at the end of the day.

‘Hit Man’ Review: It’s a Hit, Man

Glen Powell stars in one of the year’s funniest, sexiest, most enjoyable movies — and somehow it’s surprisingly deep, too.

A woman with long brown hair leans her chin on the shoulder of a man wearing a leather jacket.

By Alissa Wilkinson

If I see a movie more delightful than “Hit Man” this year, I’ll be surprised. It’s the kind of romp people are talking about when they say that “they don’t make them like they used to”: It’s romantic, sexy, hilarious, satisfying and a genuine star-clinching turn for Glen Powell, who’s been having a moment for about two years now. It’s got the cheeky verve of a 1940s screwball rom-com in a thoroughly contemporary (and slightly racier) package. I’ve seen it twice, and a huge grin plastered itself across my face both times.

That’s why it’s a shame most people will see it at home — Netflix is barely giving it a theatrical release before it hits streaming even though it’s the sort of movie that begs for the experience of collective gut-splitting joy. Oh well. If you can see it in a theater, it’s worth it. If not, then get your friends together, pop some popcorn and settle in for a good old-fashioned movie for grown-ups.

The director Richard Linklater and Powell collaborated on the “Hit Man” script, which is loosely based on Skip Hollandsworth’s 2001 Texas Monthly article about Gary Johnson, a faux hit man who actually worked for the Houston Police Department. In the movie version, Gary (Powell) is a mild-mannered philosophy professor in New Orleans with a part-time side gig doing tech work for law enforcement. One day, he is accidentally pulled into pretending to be a hit man in a sting operation, and soon realizes he loves playing the role.

Or roles, really: The more Gary gets into it, the more he realizes that each person’s fantasy of a hit man is different, and he starts to dress up, preparing for the part before he meets with the client. (If this movie were solely constructed as a de facto reel demonstrating Powell’s range, it would work just fine.) Then, one day, pretending to be a sexy, confident hit man named Ron, he meets Madison (Adria Arjona, practically glowing from within), a put-upon housewife seeking his services. And everything changes for Gary.

A great deal of the enjoyment of “Hit Man” comes from simply witnessing Powell and Arjona’s white-hot chemistry. Seeing Powell transmogrify from nerdy Gary to five o’clock shadow Ron and back again is both hilarious and tantalizing, while Arjona has a big-eyed innocence crossed with wily smarts that keeps everyone, including Gary, guessing. Multiple layers of deception keep the movie from feeling formulaic — you’re always trying to keep track of who thinks what, and why. Eventually, when “Hit Man” morphs into a kind of caper comedy, part of the joy is rooting for characters as they make choices that are, at best, flexibly ethical. In doing so, we get to be naughty too. In a movie starring a philosophy professor, that’s especially funny, a wry joke on us all.

selfie movie review hit or flop

Now streaming on:

People like to speak about a golden era of movies—the precise dimensions of which often shift based on the generation of the speaker—when Hollywood made products that were sexier, smarter, and just generally better. Richard Linklater ’s “Hit Man” is for them.

Like its protagonist’s ability to basically change identities depending on the situation, it’s a film that knows what its clients need, shifting from comedy to romance to thriller to a philosophical study of the human capacity to change. It’s one of the smartest films in years, a movie that’s reminiscent of everything from classic noir to the smooth delivery of  Steven Soderbergh ’s “ Out of Sight ” in its willingness to be damn sexy and morally complex at the same time. Don’t miss this one.

Very loosely based on a true story, “Hit Man” stars Glen Powell (who also co-wrote this stellar script with Linklater) as Gary Johnson, a New Orleans-based professor who has been assisting the police department with menial tasks like planting bugs and connecting wires in the surveillance van. When a slimy undercover agent named Jasper ( Austin Amelio ) gets suspended for 120 days for some violence involving teenagers—one gets the impression it probably should have been much longer—Gary is forced to step in and improvise on the job. It turns out he’s really good at it, convincing a sleazebag named Craig ( Mike Markoff ) that he’s a professional killer by detailing his technique when it comes to body disposal. Gary’s colleagues (memorably played by Retta and Sanjay Rao ) suggest that the mild-mannered cat lover and bird watcher should be their new undercover hit man.

Gary takes his new assignment very seriously, researching the people asking for a murder for hire in a way that makes them more likely to hand over the money. His ability to shape himself into the right man for the job could even be read as a bit of a meta-commentary on acting itself—he’s playing dress up, but he’s also doing the same kind of research and character work that Powell himself has done for dozens of roles. And, of course, Gary’s personality gamesmanship reflects his teachings about philosophy, not only in how his background allows him to read people but in how the different characters change Gary himself.

And that’s when Ron enters the picture. When Madison ( Adria Arjona ) tries to hire a hit man, she meets Ron (aka Gary) in a diner called the Please U Café—like so many choices in Powell & Linklater’s blindingly smart script, even that name doesn’t seem accidental. Ron listens to her story about her abusive husband, Ray, and he makes the sudden decision to save Madison from herself. Take the money you were going to spend on murder and start a new life. It’s only one of many beats in the back half of “Hit Man” that’s a bit morally ambiguous. What if Madison just goes and hires someone else, and someone ends up dead? So much of what follows, as Ron/Gary and Madison begin a romantic relationship, will have viewers wondering what they’re supposed to be rooting for to happen next.

That’s part of the unpredictable brilliance of “Hit Man.” So many movies telegraph their plot twists and underline their moral messages. “Hit Man” does none of that. If you asked a dozen people to guess where it was going at the halfway mark, or even where they  want it to go, you’d get 12 different answers. Linklater & Powell’s script constantly stays one step ahead of the viewers, making us eager to see what happens next and often surprised by what unfolds. I’m not sure it all adds up without loose plot threads, but it’s so wildly entertaining to take this twisting journey that it doesn’t matter.

It’s also sexy as Hell. The first scene between Powell and Arjona feels like a bolt of lightning, given how rarely we see actual screen chemistry in modern movies. Hey, look, it’s two people being movie stars . Their instant chemistry becomes the foundation for the back half of the movie as what was kind of a goofy comedy shifts more into thriller and even noir, genres that allow for a bit of moral ambiguity. Without spoiling, “Hit Man” goes to some pretty daring places narratively where other filmmakers and studios would have headed for more predictable moral waters. “Hit Man” recalls noirs and thrillers in which we rooted for the leads to get away with relatively heinous acts in the name of entertainment and didn't think about the repercussions.

That last thought might make “Hit Man” seem like little more than a lark. It’s not. This film will be underrated in its complexity, a study of how easy it is to become what we pretend we are. It’s about how we like to define people by their jobs, or even if they’re a cat or dog person, but one of the great things about humanity is our ability to surprise even ourselves. (Powell is SO good at selling the improvised choices that Gary makes in a way that's essential to the film's success.) It’s a deceptively well-made flick that appears to be Linklater in little more than his “let’s have fun” mode. But it can’t keep one of the smartest filmmakers of his generation from elevating everything that this movie is trying to do with remarkable depth.

The truth about “Hit Man” is that the golden era people long for would have made this movie a smash, the kind of hit that turns Glen Powell and Adria Arjona into household names. That's what I miss in that I sometimes wonder if some of my favorite movies of the past would even be noticed by the content algorithm in 2024. This one is getting a brief theatrical run before landing on Netflix, where good films too often get buried. Don’t let that happen here. Or they really won’t make this kind of movie anymore.

In limited theatrical release tomorrow, May 24 th . On Netflix on June 7 th .

Netflix’s best new movie arrives with a near-perfect 98% on rotten tomatoes.

When I first saw the poster for Netflix’s Hit Man, it looked like something you might find on Amazon Prime Video’s digital store after scrolling over eight times past a bunch of other films.

Then, reviews started coming in. The movie currently stands at a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes with 175 reviews from critics, a stunning achievement for any movie, especially a comedy, and of course there is one magic ingredient here. No, not Glen Powell, though I’m sure he helps. But rather this is a film from Richard Linklater.

Linklater is the exceptionally famous director of movies like School of Rock, Boyhood, Before Sunrise/Sunset and way back in 1993, the forever-classic Dazed and Confused. Now, he’s back with what will no doubt be the most-watched movie in America when it tops Netflix, and these reviews are simply stunning. Audience scores are also coming in and currently sit at a 95%, indicating it will be a hit among viewers as well.

Hit Man stars Powell as a professor who pretends to be a hit man for the police department, but things get dangerous when a woman (Andor’s Adria Arjona) enters his life and enlists his “services.”

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Powell is currently the hottest male talent in Hollywood after his turn on Top Gun: Maverick and his blockbuster romcom with Sydney Sweeney, Anyone But You. He is absolutely everywhere right now, and has another big project coming up in the form of Twisters. He’s also attached to a Running Man remake. Arjona, meanwhile, is perhaps an underused part of Andor, but I absolutely knew she was going to be a star while watching that show. And here she is, plus she’s about to lead the upcoming Criminal series for Amazon.

It’s just so exceedingly rare to see a comedy review this well in this day and age, but if anyone was going to pull it off, it was going to be Linklater. I have no doubt at all that this will soon become the #1 movie on Netflix after its debut today, and will likely stay there a while. I’m not sure if it’s designed to have a sequel, though Linklater almost never does those, and one should certainly not happen without him.

I’ll give Hit Man a watch over the weekend and render my own verdict later. My colleague Erik Kain was one of the rare critics that didn’t like it , but I’m going to wait to read why until after I can make my own initial judgement.

Netflix's 'Hit Man' is based on a true story. Here's what the movie gets right and wrong about Gary Johnson's life.

  • In "Hit Man," Glen Powell plays Gary Johnson, a college professor turned undercover hitman.
  • The story is based on a true story, and the real Gary Johnson helped Houston police arrest over 60 people.
  • Here are the biggest factual and fictional moments in the movie.

Insider Today

Netflix's " Hit Man " has an absolutely bizarre plot, but a large part of it is true.

The movie follows Gary Johnson ( Glen Powell ), a divorced college professor recruited by the police to become a phony hitman to catch potential criminals.

Gary dons wacky disguises, including a costume of Patrick Bateman from " American Psycho " and another that makes him look like a Russian Bond villain, to persuade potential criminals that he is a real hitman.

"Hit Man" sometimes seems too outlandish to be true , but it is loosely based on an article published by Texas Monthly in 2001.

In the article, staff writer Skip Hollandsworth recounts Johnson's exploits as a fake hitman in the 1980s and '90s. According to the article, Johnson helped the police arrest 60 people.

"Hit Man" was independently produced but was bought by Netflix for $20 million in 2023 after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It's the streamer's latest independent movie acquisition.

In promotional material for the movie, Powell was inspired by the Texas Monthly article for make a film after reading it in 2020. He then asked director Richard Linklater to write the script with him, and they created "Hit Man."

However, the pair made several changes to Johnson's story, including setting the movie in modern-day America.

Below, we separate fact from fiction in "Hit Man."

Fiction: Gary Johnson volunteered with the New Orleans Police Department

selfie movie review hit or flop

In "Hit Man," Gary's journey as a phone hitman begins with him volunteering for the New Orleans Police Department to help with their sting operations.

He initially works with their audio equipment. But when Jasper (Austin Amelio), an undercover cop , is suspended just before a sting operation, Gary takes his place as the fake hitman. Gary is successful, and the police decide to use him for future operations.

But according to the original 2001 Texas Monthly report, Johnson operated in Houston rather than New Orleans .

Linklater, who directed "Hit Man," told Texas Monthly in May that they originally set the movie in Houston, but there were no tax incentives.

"It was set to be a real Houston movie, with all of Houston's eccentricity. But our state thought otherwise, so off we went to New Orleans, which is even more humid than Houston, I found out," Linklater said.

Texas Monthly reported in 2001 that Johnson worked with the police most of his life. He began his career as a military policeman in Vietnam before returning to his hometown to become a sheriff's deputy in a parish in Louisiana.

In the mid-1970s, he moved to Texas, where he worked as an undercover drug dealer with the Port Arthur Police Department. He later became an investigator for Houston's district attorney's office.

In 1986, the police became aware of a lab technician named Kathy Scott trying to hire a person to kill her husband. The DA used Johnson as a phony hitman to get a confession from her.

Johnson went undercover as a biker called Mike Caine and met Scott at a bowling alley in Houston, where she asked him to kill her husband. Scott was sentenced to 80 years in prison, and Johnson became the new undercover star in Houston.

Fiction: Johnson taught at a college in New Orleans

selfie movie review hit or flop

In "Hit Man," Gary works full-time as a psychology professor at the University of New Orleans.

According to the 2001 Texas Monthly report, Johnson dreamed of teaching psychology in college. He took night courses at McNeese State University in Louisiana and tried and failed to enter the doctoral program in psychology at the University of Houston. Afterward, Johnson went to work with the DA and so never became a full-time college professor.

After his success as an undercover hitman, Johnson did teach courses on human sexuality and general psychology at a local community college, according to the report.

"His students, no doubt, think of him as just another mild-mannered professor, albeit one who has a tendency to drone on in his lectures about human beings' lack of coping skills during times of stress," Hollandsworth wrote.

Fact: Johnson stopped a woman from hiring him as a hitman

selfie movie review hit or flop

In the movie, Gary excels at his fake hitman job until he meets Madison ( Adria Arjona ), a domestic violence victim who wants to murder her husband to escape his abuse.

Madison and Gary, who is undercover as a hitman called Ron, flirt when they first meet, and Gary decides on a whim to stop her from hiring him. Instead, he advises Madison to take her money, divorce her husband, and start a new life.

This is loosely based on a real case during Johnson's career.

Per the 2001 Texas Monthly report, a young woman was once referred to Johnson after she asked a Starbucks employee in Montrose, Houston, if they knew a hitman to get rid of her abusive boyfriend.

Johnson researched the woman and learned that her boyfriend regularly physically abused her, so he referred her to social service agencies and a therapist. He also got her into a women's shelter to help her escape.

It is the only time the Texas Monthly article describes Johnson helping someone trying to hire a hitman.

Fiction: Johnson married Madison

selfie movie review hit or flop

Though the start of Gary and Madison's story is accurate in the movie, the rest is fictional. They never date, get married, or have children, and they never kill two people to hide their secret.

According to Hollandsworth's report, Gary married and divorced three times.

Like in the movie, he is friends with one of his ex-wives, Sunny.

"The true essence of Gary is that he is a loner," Sunny told Texas Monthly. "He'll show up at parties and have a good time, and he's always friendly, but he likes being alone, being quiet. It's still amazing to me that he can turn on this other personality that makes people think he is a vicious killer."

Powell and Linklater said they deliberately added this fictional element to make "Hit Man" interesting.

Linklater and several other screenwriters have tried to make Johnson's story into a movie since 2001.

"I just got kind of obsessed with it and over the years thought about it, but it never quite came together in my head as a movie because the story doesn't seem to go anywhere," Linklater said, referring to how the Texas Monthly article doesn't have an interesting conclusion.

Powell told Netflix that when he called Linklater about making the film in 2020, he wanted to focus on the woman Johnson helped.

"I told Rick, 'I think that's the story. That's the thread we need to pull,'" Powell said. "We still had the real Gary Johnson baked into our character, but the love story is where we started taking our creative license."

Fact: Johnson owned two cats called Id and Ego

selfie movie review hit or flop

Both movie Gary and TV Gary own two cats named Id and Ego.

Texas Monthly reported in 2001 that Johnson also had a goldfish and spent his free time feeding his pets, tending to his garden, meditating, reading, or watching documentaries about animals.

Fact: Johnson was a master of disguise

selfie movie review hit or flop

In the movie, Gary's costumes become more elaborate and his accents more eccentric as he gains confidence as a phony hitman.

The real Johnson was also a master of disguise, according to the 2001 Texas Monthly report. Hollandsworth described the undercover cop as "the Laurence Olivier of the field," referring to the famous 20th-century actor.

Hollandsworth added that Johnson was able to transform from a "sleek, skilled assassin" for some clients to a "wily country boy" for others.

But Linklater told Netflix's Tudum last month that Powell's costumes were more elaborate than Johnson's.

"It was Glen who really ran with those false identities that Gary creates for each of his cases," he said. "The real Gary did slight disguises, but not to the extent that we see in the film."

But Esmeralda Noyola, a secretary who worked with Johnson, told Texas Monthly in 2001 that the undercover cop was great at creating different voices and accents.

"It got to a point where I would be transcribing a tape of one of his murder-for-hire conversations, and I could not tell it was Gary on the tape," Noyola said. "Gary was that good at changing accents and disguising his voice."

Michael Hinton, a former supervisor of Johnson, told Texas Monthly in 2001 that Gary was "the perfect chameleon."

Fact: Johnson used "All pie is good pie" as a codeword

selfie movie review hit or flop

Halfway through the movie, Gary develops a codeword with one of his clients.

They approach him in the diner and ask him about the pie he is eating.

He replies: "All pie is good pie."

The quote becomes Gary's catchphrase in the movie, and is a code word Johnson used in his undercover work.

According to the 2001 Texas Monthly report, a chemical plant worker once tried to hire Johnson to kill his ex-wife's new boyfriend. Johnson suggested they meet at a Denny's to discuss the plan, but the worker wanted a secret code to ensure they recognized each other.

When he arrived, the worker would say, "That looks like good pie."

"All pie is good pie," Johnson replied.

Fact: Johnson died in 2022

selfie movie review hit or flop

During the credits, there is a tribute to the real Johnson that reveals he died in 2022.

Johnson died before "Hit Man" started filming.

Linklater told Texas Monthly in May that he never met Johnson but spoke to him several times over the course of a few years.

"I thought, okay, the film is actually happening now, and I wanted him to come visit the movie set," Linklater said. "But he wasn't returning my calls or emails."

Linklater reached out to Hollandsworth, who told him that Johnson had died.

Powell told Netflix he never spoke to Johnson but listened to the former cop's old recordings and read his police debriefs.

"I really wish I would have gotten a chance to meet him because Rick had a lot of reverence for Gary and who he was," Powell said. "I think Gary died the week before we started shooting, so he never got to see a cut of the film."

Powell added: "I'm really glad we have that tribute to him at the end of the movie, because I think he would have really appreciated the story."
