Make a self-running or kiosk display in PowerPoint

PowerPoint can show slides on a screen as a high-tech signboard, using a self-running presentation known as Kiosk display. Here’s how to do it plus all the settings and tricks available.

We’ve all seen screens displaying information on a series of slides – maybe in a shop or conference. Maybe as a prelude or postscript to a presentation. These days it’s easy to setup a laptop with an external screen almost anywhere to make a high-tech signboard.

At a party or celebration you can use Powerpoint to display photos (with or without captions) of the guest of honor.

There’s various ways to do it but the main one is PowerPoint. Many of us have PowerPoint but never use it because we think of it as being for speeches. In fact there’s plenty of other uses.

PowerPoint Kiosk mode

At its basic level, PowerPoint’s Kiosk mode is merely a different way to display a presentation. Instead of clicking to move between slides, PowerPoint will automatically display the slides going in an infinite loop … until someone presses Escape.

Go to the Slide Show tab, Set up Slide Show … it’s a PowerPoint dialog that hasn’t changed for many years/versions.

what is a kiosk powerpoint presentation

Choose ‘ Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) ‘ and click OK.

That’s as far as most people go in explaining Kiosk mode but, as usual with Office, there’s a lot more going on and Office-Watch.com is here to help.

Browsed by Individual

The Browsed by individual (window) option lets someone use a mouse or keyboard to move through the slides at their own pace. In this case the slides can change automatically (if no human intervention) or only when asked – see the Advance slide options on the Set Up Show dialog.

To make the self-guided presentation more accessible, you should add action buttons (forward / back etc) to the slide master so the buttons appear on all slides. Make the mouse available to users and they can click to their heart’s content.

Show without narration

PowerPoint presentations can have an audio track or narration included. This option lets you let that audio be heard as the slides progress or not. The default is for the narration to be heard (i.e selection unchecked).

Show without animation

Slides can have animations or motions on them – for example bullet points appearing one by one. Check this box if you don’t want the animations – in other words, the slide appears all at once.

Disable hardware graphics acceleration

Usually you’d leave this off, but if there are problems with the display this might help.

Show slides

Show all the slides or just a range from a larger presentation.

Advance slides

In kiosk mode, PowerPoint lets each slide appear for a few seconds unless there’s a slide timing set (at Transitions | Timing | Advance slide | After:

Multiple Monitors

Very useful if you have a second monitor. Use the pull down list to select the screen to display the presentation.

Why won’t the slide/s move?

If your kiosk presentation is stuck on a slide, or the first slide, make sure the Advance Slide timing is set higher than zero at Transitions | Timing | Advance slide | After:

After setting a value (in seconds) click Apply to All to set that as the default display time for all slides.

Sometimes the Advance Slide After: value is set to zero. If that happens PowerPoint will obey the zero timing set and never move past that slide, even though it makes no sense in Kiosk mode.

How to wait longer or shorter on one slide

Some slides deserve more time to read while others you might want to whizz by. After setting the default timing (see ‘Why won’t the slides move?’) go to individual slides and change the Transitions | Timing | Advance slide | After: for that slide only.

You can also select multiple slides from the slide sorter and apply a timing to all the selected slides in one go.

Starting Kiosk Mode

To start a kiosk presentation, just click the Slide Show | From Beginning or From Current Slide buttons.

Stopping Kiosk Mode

Stopping the presentation by just pressing the Escape button. If you don’t want people to do that, hide the keyboard out of sight.

Blocking the ESCape route

There’s always some smartie who will try to bypass the automatic presentation and get access to an unattended computer. To make things more difficult for them, use the No ESCape add-in for PowerPoint 2000-2007. This will disable the Escape key option in Powerpoint. We’ve not found an equivalent for PowerPoint 2010 and beyond.

If you use this add-in make sure you add your own escape route. Add an invisible shape to a slide (probably the last) with the on click action set to End show.

Self running presentation packages

Another option is to create a self-contained PowerPoint Show (.ppsx) that can be run on another computer without additional software.

Simple Self-running Presentations

The simplest self-running presentations are just a collection of photos . You can add captions or headings if you like or just put each photo, full size, on a slide.

A new Kiosk presentation

Aside from the setup mentioned above, there’s nothing special about presentation used in kiosk mode.

You can make a presentation that has just photos – a traditional photo album on the screen. It can be a point of discussion or derision at a party or meeting.

Below is the step-by-step to make a presentation with photos, or … you can use the easy way … PowerPoint Photo Album .

Choose a background color (probably black or white) at Design | Customize | Format Backround. The background is necessary because some images won’t be the same proportions as the screen, leaving edges where the background will appear.

Change the slide layout to one that suit you. For full screen photos, choose ‘Blank’ layout.

Then add your photos. On each new slide click Insert | Picture then adjust the image to fit the slide.

There are ‘photo only’ presentation software programs out there, just search for then. Some have the advantage of working with all the photos in a nominated folder. It’s easy to change the presentation by simply changing the images in that folder. At a pinch, a photo screen saver can be used.

How to create a PowerPoint presentation for a kiosk or trade show booth

pcw ppt primary

Can I format or compile my PowerPoint presentations to run automatically in a show booth or kiosk and, if so, how? Yes, you can and the how is much easier than you’d imagine.

First, create your slideshow as you would any other presentation. Add your graphics, text, animations, and transitions (between slides). If you have animations that play over multiple slides, then the timing must also be set before you compile the presentation for a kiosk.

Also consider the audio. Do you want music, verbal narration, or both? Most professional presentations use both (but necessarily simultaneously); however, some do play music softly in the background while the narrator speaks over the music. Either way, this is another area where timing is essential. Obviously, you want the narrator’s voice to follow the text on the slide. It is OK if the narrator’s speech is more detailed than the slide headers and bullet points, but it’s not OK if the narrator is talking about the Team while the Financials slide is viewed.

Add background music to the entire presentation

This is the easiest step of all.

1. Select Insert > Audio> Audio on My PC

y01 set the timing to match the narration

Set the timing to match the narration.

2. The Insert Audio dialog window opens and displays a list of audio files in your Music Library.

3. Click the music file you want to play in the background of your slideshow, then click the Insert button.

4. PowerPoint places the Audio icon (looks like a speaker) in the middle of the slide. Click and drag it anywhere on the slide that’s unobtrusive.

5. While the Audio icon is selected, a new menu option called Audio Tools appears, with two new tabs called Format and Playback.

6. The Format tab is all about aesthetics, so click through the various features and choose a style that fits your project.

7. The Playback tab provides several options for customizing how your audio file functions with your presentation. For example, under the Audio Styles group, choose Play in Background .

y02 add background music to the entire presentation

8. Under the Audio Options group, choose Start: Automatically and Volume: Low , then check the following boxes: Play Across Slides , Loop Until Stopped , and Hide During Show . This ensures that your background music continues to play as long as the slideshow is running.

9. Under the Editing group, you can choose the Fade Duration that fades the music in and out, or Trim the Audio file (which means you can truncate/crop the music file down to fit the overall time of the presentation).

NOTE: Even if the music loops, you still want the music to start at the beginning of the presentation. Otherwise, if the music loops (or starts over) on slide 20, then when the slideshow repeats, and the music on the first slide will be in the middle of a track.

Plug in a microphone & configure your sound devices

1. First, you must plug in a microphone and configure your sound devices.

2. Look for the red Stereo-In jack on your computer (usually on the back) and plug in your microphone.

y03 plugin a microphone and configure your sound devices

Plug in a microphone and configure your sound devices

3. Locate the Control Panel and open that dialog window.

4. On the Control Panel screen, select Hardware and Sound .

5. On the next screen ( Control Panel/Hardware and Sound ), locate the Sound submenu and select Manage Audio Devices .

6. In the Sound dialog, click the Recording tab.

7. Highlight Microphone and click to select, then click OK .

8. Turn on your speakers and talk into the microphone to ensure that it’s working properly.

Add voiceover narration to the presentation

Now you can add voiceover narration to the entire presentation or to each slide individually. Both methods work; however, the length, format, and style of your slideshow may determine which method is more efficient. To saves time and reduce errors, write a script for each slide before you begin.

Timing tip: If your narration follows the text on each slide, or just comments on each slide; for example, a presentation about how to build a treehouse or the best vacation destinations in the world, it’s much easier for timing and accuracy to add the narration to each individual slide. If, however, your narration is in a story format and the slides are just graphical representations of the entire story, then it’s just as easy to record the whole conversation in one file and place the Audio icon on the first page, where it will start automatically when the slideshow begins and play through to the end.

For narration on individual slides

1. Select the first slide that uses narration.

2. Enter a filename for your narration; something simple such as Narration1 or N1 (for page 1), then N2 (for page 2) and so on.

3. When you’re ready, click the red-dot Record button.

4. Read your script or read the text on the screen.

5. When you’re finished, click the  Stop button (white square with red border).

6. Press the arrow tip to listen now, or click OK .  PowerPoint places the Record Audio speaker icon on the current slide, which you can move to whatever location you prefer.

y04 record narrations for individual slides

Record narrations for individual slides

7. Notice the Audio icon is selected, so a new menu option called Audio Tools appears with two new tabs called Format and Playback.

8. The Format tab is all about aesthetics, so click through the various features and choose a style that fits your project.

9. The Playback tab provides several options for customizing how your audio file functions with your presentation. For this single-slide narration, leave all the boxes unchecked and select nothing except change the Start field to Automatically , so the narration begins when this slide displays.

For narration throughout the entire slideshow

1. For narration across the entire slideshow, select View > Normal button in the Presentation Views group.

2. Choose the first slide in the show where you want the narration to begin and select Slide Show > Record Slide Show  > Record from Current Slide .

3. The next screen fills your monitor and shows the current slide with recording buttons along the top-left side.

4. Click the Record  button, then read your script, and click the arrows on the right side to advance to the next screen.

5. When finished, click the Stop button (gray), and PowerPoint places the Audio speaker in the bottom-right corner.

y05 record narrations for entire presentation

Record narrations for entire presentation

6. Click the Replay button (blue arrow tip) to listen to your narration, then save your work or delete the Audio speaker and re-record the narration.

Now, test the finished product.

7. Click Slide Show > Rehearse Timings .

8. Ensure that there’s enough time on each slide for the narration, then click the arrow to advance to the next slide.

9. After the last slide displays, PowerPoint shows the time of the complete presentation, then asks if you want to save it. Click the Yes button to save it.

10. Finally, save the entire presentation again.

  • If you go back to the first slide where you began the narration, notice that the Audio speaker icon displays on every screen that contains the narrated file. This icon will not show on the finished, published presentation.
  • PowerPoint tracks the timing of previous slide changes and your animations throughout the slideshow, so there is no conflict with the “narrated” slide changes. If you find errors in timing, go back to the beginning and re-rehearse the timings. Also ensure that the Slide Show > Set Up group check boxes are all checked; that is: Play Narrations, Use Timings , and Show Media Controls .

TIP: Media controls are not necessary on an automatic running slideshow for a kiosk; however, if something happens and the slide show jams, the Media Controls are nice to have available.

Set up the slideshow for a kiosk presentation

y06 set up the slideshow for a kiosk presentation

1. Click Slide Show > Setup Slide Show .

2. The Set Up Show dialog menu opens.

3. Click the Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) radio button, then click OK .

4. Press function key F5 (or click Slide Show > From the Beginning button ) to view the completed kiosk presentation.

5. Edit or make corrections as needed, then save the file again.

6. And that’s all, it’s done! Your slideshow is ready for others to view (automatically, without human intervention) at a kiosk or a trade show booth. Be sure to set the correct timing for the slides in your presentation, or else the slideshow will get stuck on the first slide and fail to advance.

How to Run a PowerPoint Presentation in Kiosk Mode

Kiosk mode is a great choice for unattended presentations like demos, product or some business presentations. The kiosk mode is very popular in some stores, airports or waiting rooms where there is no presenter but a display playing a slideshow on its own.

PowerPoint Presentation in Kiosk Mode - Setup Slideshow Window

In order to prepare your presentations for kiosk mode, you’d need to save the timing for each slide. The process is very simple and here we will show you how to prepare your slides for a kiosk mode.

Locate the Slide Show tab in the Ribbon and then click Set Up tab.

Go to Set Up Slide Show and then a new window will appear. Here, choose Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) radio button under Show Type and then press OK to confirm.

Now, click Rehearse Timings button in the Slide Show menu and then a new dialog box will appear with the timer controls.

Rehearse Presentation Timing

Simulate that you are presenting the slideshow in the real scenario and wait the required seconds between moving to the next slide. You’d notice there is a timer counting the time at the top left of the screen. Here you can pause the timer if needed.

You can click in the timer textbox to enter the amount of time for the selected slide manually.

Kiosk Mode Timing Setting in PowerPoint

Advance the slideshow and repeat the process for every slide.

It is important to remember that during the kiosk mode is enabled, the users cannot skip the slides as it is a self-running presentation. In these situations, there is only a display but no keyboard or mouse available to the user.

How To Set Up A Kiosk Presentation

Posted by Smart Office - philippospan

In PowerPoint we can easily create a Self-Running Presentation in order to communicate our information without the need of a presenter. We can set up the Presentation in order to run unattended in a kiosk, a booth or a convention. We can also make the appropriated adjustments, so that our audience cannot make changes to our Self-Running Presentation . Once we create a Self-Running Presentation , it automatically restarts after it is finished.

In order to create a Self-Running Presentation also known as Kiosk Presentation , all you need to do is to follow the steps below.

First we must create our Presentation , or open it in order to set it up as a Kiosk Presentation and then we must select the Slide Show tab and then from the area of the ribbon named Set Up we select the command Set Up Slide Show as shown in the image below.

Slide Show Tab - Set Up Slide Show

Once selected the Set Up Show window appears, where under the area at the top left corner named Show Type we notice the following three commands:

  • Presented By A Speaker (Full Screen)
  • Browsed By An Individual (Window)
  • Browsed At A Kiosk (Full Screen)

Set Up Show Dialog Box

In order to create a Self-Running Presentation a.k.a., Kiosk Presentation we select the check box next to the command Browsed At A Kiosk (Full Screen) as shown in the image below. Once the command is selected, a lot of commands in this window will not become any more available as we can see in the image below.

Browsed At Kiosk

Once finished we press the Ok button in order to return to our Presentation . In order for the Kiosk Presentation to work properly we must time our slides. In order to do that, from the Slide Show tab and from the Set Up area we must select the Rehearse Timings button as shown in the image below.

Rehearse Timings

Once the Rehearse Timings command is selected we are transferred into Recording Mode as we can see in the image below. In this mode we can navigate to the first slide of our Presentation and press the Pause button which is located at the top left corner of the window in order to stop the Timer .

We can click on the Timecode area and enter the amount of the time that we want our slide to appear for. Once we enter it, we just click on another part of the screen in order for the time to take place. We then move on to the other slides and repeat the same process. Once finished, we make sure that everything is set up as we want.

Rehearse Settings

Once we finish Rehearsing the Timings , we press the Esc button on our keyboard and an Informational Microsoft PowerPoint dialog box appears, notifying us that if we want to save the Slide Timings we press the Yes button and if not we press the No button. If we are sure about the Slide Timings , we press the Yes button to return to our Presentation .

Informational Dialog Box

That is it! We are all set with our Kiosk Presentation .

Learn about Kiosk mode, the PowerPoint feature that lets you create unattended presentations that viewers can self navigate. Also, learn about a cool add-in that helps you get more from Kiosk mode.

Kiosk mode is a subset of  Slide Show mode  in PowerPoint – it’s been available since a very long time, and in past versions some options would behave differently than they do now – some users will no doubt complain that Kiosk mode was more useable before.

So what are the options that are missing now? And is there any way to get them back? Before we explore these options, let’s answer a simple question – why do you need Kiosk mode?

We know that many people don’t like to hear a question in response to a question – but for the sake of exploring scenarios, let us indeed look at these questions – and the answer to all of them essentially is that you should use Kiosk mode to solve these requirements:

  • Are you taking part at a trade show, and want to create an interactive presentation with options to click – so that visitors to your booth can click on a button on one slide to go to another? They decide whatever interests them, and they choose to click accordingly.
  • Do you also want to ensure that no one can press a button on the keyboard to go to Next or Previous slides – in fact, you would like to disable the keyboard or at least hide it somewhere so that users are not aware that a keyboard exists! So all interaction and moving between slides will happen through the mouse cursor.
  • Do you want to disable all clicks on any area of the slide other than the click hotspots you set using Action Buttons or hyperlinks?
  • Do you want your interactive presentation to always return to the first slide of the presentation after a period of inactivity so that another user can interactively navigate your slides?

Kiosk mode lets you do all this and more – well, actually it does fulfill everything but the last requirement! It should fulfill that last requirement too – and that was the case until PowerPoint 2000. Then came along PowerPoint 2002 (part of Office XP) and that feature was broken – it’s still broken in PowerPoint 2013! Fortunately, Chirag Dalal of  OfficeOne  created a  free add-in for PowerPoint  that lets you restore that ability – we will speak about Chirag’s add-in later in this tutorial. For now let us explore how you can turn on Kiosk mode in PowerPoint 2007, 2010, and 2013:

  • Access the Slide Show tab of the  Ribbon  and click the Set Up Slide Show button.
  • This opens the Set Up Show dialog box that you can see in Figure 1, below.

Figure 1: Set Up Show dialog box

3. Select the radio button that says Browsed at a kiosk (full screen), as shown highlighted within red within Figure 1. Since this is a radio button, your other selected option will become deselected.

4. Click the OK button to apply these changes.

Now when you play your slides in  Slide Show  (keyboard shortcut: F5), then although you may see no difference, rest assured that everything other than the slide’s appearance has changed. You will not be able to do any of these tasks:

  • You cannot move to the next or previous slides.
  • Right-clicking on the slide will result in no contextual menu showing up.
  • Hovering your cursor on the bottom left area will not reveal any buttons – yes, you can still see the cursor though!

All these characteristics indicate that you are now in Kiosk mode.

Surface does not do touch in Kiosk mode!

Are you running PowerPoint on a touch device such as Microsoft Surface and then expect that you can tap on an Action Button to navigate to another slide or even another destination in Kiosk mode?

Well, that doesn’t work – just thought we will make you aware of this problem!

Leave your presentation unattended on slide 16, and it will remain there – it won’t get to slide 1 again after a period of time – as we already mentioned, this feature is broken in recent versions of PowerPoint – you can get it back by installing Chirag Dalal’s  OfficeOne Kiosk Assistant 2.0  add-in.

Once installed, Kiosk Assistant shows up as an option with the Add-Ins tab of the Ribbon, as shown inFigure 2.

Figure 2: Add-ins tab of the Ribbon

Click on the Configure Kiosk Assistant button and the Kiosk Assistant Settings dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3: Kiosk Assistant Settings

Essentially, you get two easy options here:

  • Reset kiosk slide show after: You can set a time interval here — based on the time interval you choose, your slide show will automatically move to a predetermined slide after that time interval has lapsed.
  • Reset to slide: Here you can choose the slide number to which the slide show automatically progresses after a period of inactivity.

Click OK when done.

So, do play around with both Kiosk mode and Kiosk Assistant – hopefully this will provide you with newer ways to use PowerPoint. Do share your comments and thoughts!

How to Enable Kiosk Mode in Powerpoint 2013

Powerpoint is great when you need to manually present information in front of a group of people, but what if there is something that you would like to show to an audience, but you can’t be there to keep showing it over and over? Fortunately Powerpoint 2013 also has a feature called “kiosk mode,” whereby you can configure your presentation to loop continuously until you manually end it.

This is ideal for displaying a slideshow at a trade show or convention, where visitors might be walking up to your booth at any time, and where you might not always be present. We will show you below where to find the kiosk mode setting for your Powerpoint 2013 slideshow so that you can give it a try.

How to Put a Powerpoint 2013 Slideshow into Kiosk Mode

The following steps are going to show you how to change a setting for your Powerpoint presentation that allows that presentation to be put into “Kiosk” mode.

Step 1: Open your slideshow in Powerpoint 2013.

Step 2: Click the Slide Show tab at the top of the window.

open the slide show menu

Step 3: Click the Set Up Slide Show button in the Set Up section of the ribbon.

click the set up slide show button

Step 4: Click the Browsed at a kiosk option in the Show type section of the window. You can then click the OK button at the bottom of the window to apply your changes.

Note that this is going to automatically enable the Loop continuously until “Esc” option.

You can then start your slideshow in kiosk mode by clicking one of the options in the Start Slide Show section of the ribbon. You can exit the slideshow at any time by pressing the Esc key on the keyboard.

Kiosk mode is a subset of Slide Show view in PowerPoint. It's been available since a very long time, and in past versions, some options would behave differently than they do now. Some users will no doubt complain that Kiosk mode was more useable before.

So what are the options that are missing now? And is there any way to get them back? Before we explore these options, let's answer a simple question, why do you need Kiosk mode?

Why Use Kiosk Mode?

We know that many people don’t like to hear a question in response to a question. But for the sake of exploring scenarios, let us indeed look at these questions, and the answer to all of them essentially is that you should use Kiosk mode to solve these requirements:

  • Are you taking part at a trade show, and want to create an interactive presentation with options to click, so that visitors to your booth can click on a button on one slide to go to another? They decide whatever interests them, and they choose to click accordingly.
  • Do you also want to ensure that no one can press a button on the keyboard to go to Next or Previous slides. In fact, you would like to disable the keyboard or at least hide it somewhere so that users are not aware that a keyboard exists! So that all interaction and moving between slides will happen through the mouse cursor or a touch screen?
  • So, do you want to disable all clicks on any area of the slide other than the click hotspots you set using Action Buttons or hyperlinks?
  • Do you want your interactive presentation to always return to the first slide of the presentation after a period of inactivity so that another user can interactively navigate your slides?

Kiosk mode lets you do all this and more, well, actually it does fulfill everything but the last requirement! It should fulfill that last requirement too, and that was the case until PowerPoint 2000. Then came along PowerPoint 2002 (part of Office XP) and that feature was broken. It's still broken in PowerPoint 2013!

Kiosk Assistant for PowerPoint

Fortunately, Chirag Dalal of OfficeOne created a free add-in for PowerPoint that lets you restore that ability. We will speak about Chirag's add-in later in this tutorial. For now let us explore how you can turn on Kiosk mode in PowerPoint 2007, 2010, and 2013:

  • Access the Slide Show tab of the Ribbon and click the Set Up Slide Show button.
  • Doing so opens the Set Up Show dialog box, as shown in Figure 1 , below.
  • Select the radio button that says Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) , as shown highlighted in red within Figure 1 , above. Since this is a radio button, your other selected option will become deselected.
  • Click the OK button to apply these changes.

Now, when you play your slides in Slide Show ( F5 ), you may see no difference, but rest assured that everything other than the slide's appearance has changed. You will not be able to do any of these tasks:

  • You cannot move to the next or previous slides.
  • Right-clicking on the slide will result in no contextual menu showing up.
  • Hovering your cursor on the bottom left area will not reveal any buttons. Yes, you can still see the cursor though!

All these characteristics indicate that you are now in Kiosk mode.

Surface does not do touch in Kiosk mode!

Do you expect that you can tap on an Action Button to navigate to another slide or even another destination in Kiosk mode?

Well, that doesn't work, just thought we will make you aware of this problem!

Leave your presentation unattended on slide 16, and it will remain there. It won't get to slide 1 again after a period of time. As we already mentioned, this feature is broken in recent versions of PowerPoint. You can get it back by installing Chirag Dalal's OfficeOne Kiosk Assistant 2.0 add-in.

Once installed, Kiosk Assistant shows up as an option within the Add-Ins tab of the Ribbon , as shown in Figure 2 , below.

Click on the Configure Kiosk Assistant button and the Kiosk Assistant Settings dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 3 , below.

Essentially, you get two easy options here:

Reset kiosk slide show after

You can set a time interval here. Based on the time interval you choose, your slide show will automatically move to a predetermined slide after that time interval has elapsed.

Reset to slide

Here you can choose the slide number to which the slide show automatically progresses after a period of inactivity.

Click OK when done.

So, do play around with both Kiosk mode and Kiosk Assistant. Hopefully, this approach will provide you with newer ways to use PowerPoint. Do share your comments and thoughts!

Browsed at a kiosk - PowerPoint

Computing PowerPoint

Last edited: 8th October 2021

When making an Interactive Multimedia Product or a presentation with buttons such as a Photoshop Gallery , it is a good idea to limit the way users can navigate your presentation.

In a traditional presentation users click the mouse or keyboard and PowerPoint moves forward or backward through the slides until the end. Sometimes you want them to use buttons or a menu instead.

For this, you click on the main menu at the top:

Slide Show --> Set Up Slide Show --> Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) --> OK

Now, when you play the presentation, clicking doesn't move the slides or animations. To get out of it press 'Esc' on the keyboard.

The self-running kiosk mode in PowerPoint is ideal for product and business presentations, especially in situations where you would like the presentation to run unattended. During this mode, known the slide presentation plays on its own so users cannot skip slides or valuable information a business may want to get across. Setting up a presentation for kiosk mode is a simple process but will not work properly without timing your slides.

Click on the "Slide Show" tab at the top of screen. Locate the "Set Up" tab towards the middle.

Click on the "Set Up Slide Show." In the new window, click on the "Browsed at a kiosk (full screen)" under the "Show Type" menu. Press "OK" to confirm the selection.

Click on the "Rehearse Timings" icon under the "Set Up" menu. A new window pops up with timer controls for your slideshow.

Navigate to the first slide of your project. Press the "Pause" button to stop the timer.

Click on the "Timecode" and enter the amount of time you want the slide to appear for. Click on another part of the screen to set the time.

Advance to each slide and repeat the process. View your slide at full screen to make sure the timing is correct. Read and watch each slide as you were a new viewer to make sure the timing is correct and there is plenty of time to process all of the information.

  • Microsoft: Create a Self-Running Presentation
  • If you do not set timers for your PowerPoint it will only display the first slide in kiosk mode.

How to Run Powerpoint in Kiosk Mode: A Step-by-Step Guide

Running PowerPoint in Kiosk mode turns your presentation into an interactive experience, allowing it to run continuously until interrupted by a user. To activate Kiosk mode, open your PowerPoint presentation, click on the “Slide Show” tab, then click on “Set Up Slide Show.” In the dialogue box that appears, select “Browsed at a kiosk (full screen)” under the “Show type” options. Finally, click “OK” to save your settings.

After completing these steps, your PowerPoint presentation will loop continuously, and slides will only advance when the viewer chooses to click or interact with the slide. This is great for trade shows, information kiosks, or self-serve presentations.

Introduction

Have you ever stumbled upon a slick, self-running presentation at a trade show or a public exhibition and wondered how it’s done? Well, the magic lies in running PowerPoint in Kiosk mode. This feature enables a presentation to run on its own, allowing viewers to interact with it at their own pace.

Kiosk mode is ideal for public displays where the presentation needs to be self-sufficient and interactive without the need for a presenter. It’s particularly relevant for businesses showcasing their products at expos, educational institutions providing information at fairs, or even in museums where visitors want to learn more about exhibits. In an increasingly digital world, knowing how to set up your PowerPoint presentation in Kiosk mode is becoming an essential skill. Not only does it offer a professional touch to your display, but it can also save on staffing resources and ensure your information is accessible to everyone at any time.

Step by Step Tutorial: Running PowerPoint in Kiosk Mode

Before we dive into the specific steps, it’s important to understand that Kiosk mode in PowerPoint allows the presentation to run in a loop, which is ideal for unattended displays. It also restricts the user’s ability to make changes to the presentation, ensuring your content remains as you intended.

Step 1: Open your PowerPoint presentation

Open the PowerPoint presentation you wish to run in Kiosk mode. This is the most basic step where you simply open the presentation you intend to use.

Step 2: Click on the “Slide Show” tab

Find and click on the “Slide Show” tab in the PowerPoint ribbon. This tab contains all the settings related to the slide show aspect of your presentation.

Step 3: Click on “Set Up Slide Show”

In the “Slide Show” tab, select the “Set Up Slide Show” button to open the set-up options. This will open a dialogue box with several options for how your slide show will run.

Step 4: Select “Browsed at a kiosk (full screen)”

In the “Set Up Show” dialogue box, under the “Show type” section, choose “Browsed at a kiosk (full screen).” This setting is crucial as it sets your presentation to run in full-screen mode and loop continuously.

Step 5: Click “OK” to save your settings

Once you have selected the Kiosk mode, click “OK” at the bottom of the dialogue box to save your settings. Your presentation is now set to run in Kiosk mode, and you can test it to ensure it functions as expected.

BenefitExplanation
Continuous loopYour presentation will run indefinitely until manually stopped, ensuring all visitors have a chance to view it.
InteractiveViewers can interact with the presentation at their own pace, which can lead to better engagement.
Professional appearanceA self-running presentation can give a polished and professional look to your display or information booth.
DrawbackExplanation
Limited controlOnce in Kiosk mode, viewers cannot easily skip through the presentation or change the order of slides.
Potential technical issuesIf there is a technical glitch, the presentation may need to be restarted, which could disrupt the viewing experience.
Dependent on hardwareRunning a presentation in Kiosk mode requires a dependable computer or device, which may not always be available or functional.

Additional Information

While the steps to run PowerPoint in Kiosk mode are fairly straightforward, there are some additional tips and insights that can enhance your experience. For instance, consider adding interactive elements like hyperlinks or action buttons to your slides to create a truly engaging presentation. Also, be mindful of the timing of each slide; since the presentation will loop, make sure each slide has enough time to be read and interacted with, but not so long that it becomes tedious.

Another point to consider is the hardware setup. Ensure your computer or tablet is set up securely and in a location where the screen is easily visible to viewers. It’s also a good idea to test your presentation on the actual device you’ll be using well before the event to avoid last-minute surprises.

Lastly, while running PowerPoint in Kiosk mode, remember that your presentation is now a part of the user experience. Design it with your audience in mind, use high-quality images, clear text, and consistent branding to leave a lasting impression.

  • Open your PowerPoint presentation.
  • Click on the “Slide Show” tab.
  • Select “Set Up Slide Show”.
  • Choose “Browsed at a kiosk (full screen)”.
  • Click “OK”.

What Is PowerPoint Kiosk Mode?

The kiosk mode or self-running slideshow on PowerPoint is a slide show setup on PowerPoint that enables you to display content in a public space without assigning a speaker or presenter. You find this option on the PowerPoint ribbon menu section Setp Up Slide Show. There are three different slide presenting options. Out of these three, the “Browsed at a kiosk (full screen)” option enables PowerPoint kiosk mode.

Learn here What Is PowerPoint Kiosk Mode

In the self-running presentation mode, the PowerPoint slideshow preview enters a continuous loop mode. According to a preconfigured view time per slide, the app will keep showing all the slides one by one. When it reaches the last slide, the presentation starts again from the beginning. You can modify the display time per slide if you want. Furthermore, you can add a narrator voice describing the slideshow if you want to. Sound in a PowerPoint kiosk mode presentation adds more value to the slideshows.

The self-running presentation mode of PowerPoint is available in the following editions:

  • Microsoft 365 Windows app for PowerPoint
  • PowerPoint for Mac

The feature is available on various versions of the above editions of the PowerPoint standalone app. Microsoft mostly used Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) option to explain that the app supports PowerPoint Kiosk Mode. Thus, if you see this option, rest assured the self-running slideshow will work.

At the time of writing, PowerPoint Kiosk Mode wasn’t available on any version of PowerPoint cloud apps like PowerPoint on the web for individuals and PowerPoint Web App for business subscribers. If you want to know if the feature is available on the web version or not, visit the PowerPoint help & learning portal and type a question in the How can we help you? search box.

  • Open the PowerPoint file in question.
  • Click the Slide Show tab on the PowerPoint ribbon menu.

The Set Up command section in Slide Show tab on PowerPoint ribbon

  • Now, you should see the Set Up Slide Show command inside the Set Up command menu.
  • Click on Set Up Slide Show.
  • The Set Up Show dialog box will now open.

Show Options

The Show Options commands control how the slideshow progresses in a kiosk mode. You’ll see that PowerPoint 365 automatically selects the Loop continuously until ‘Esc’ feature. It means you need to press the Esc key on the keyboard to stop the presentation. In this section, other controls you can select are as follows:

  • Show without narration: Selecting this option will disable all audio narration in the PPT file
  • Show without animation: When selected, PowerPoint won’t run the animations in a kiosk mode
  • Disable hardware graphic acceleration: If the kiosk computer lacks GPU, you can enable this feature

Show Slides

By default, the Show slides section will auto-select All slides for self-running presentation. However, you can click the radio button for From to create a slideshow with manual slide views. For example, if your PPT contains 50 slides, you can choose to play only 25 by entering number 1 in the Form field and number 25 in the To field.

Advance Slides

For the auto kiosk presentation mode, PowerPoint will use the slide timing to change a slide after its timing expires. For example, if you set up the slide to display for 10 seconds, the app will show the page for 120 seconds and move on to the next slide. The Using timings, if present is this the default setting for Show slides in PowerPoint kiosk mode.

Here’s how you can manually change the display time for each slide:

  • Click the Rehearse Timings button in the Set Up menu.

Manually set slide timing for self-running presentation on PowerPoint

  • You should see a time running on the top-left corner of the slideshow.
  • Here, you can let the screen run for a specific time on its own.
  • Alternatively, you can type in seconds and minutes in the timer box.
  • When you’re done editing the slideshow timings, click the close button in the timer.

Confirm the timing change by clicking Yes

  • Select Yes to apply the timing changes made.

Multiple Monitors

If there are multiple monitors connected to the same Windows PC, you can control the monitor for PPT display. Let’s consider there are five monitors connected to your PC in your business stall in a fair. Now, you want to display five different PPTs to the visitors of the fair. You can run all of them from the same PC. Then, on the Set Up Show dialog box, manually change the display screen to which you want to stream the content. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Look for the Slide show monitor drop-down list under the Multiple monitors command section.

Multi monitor settings on Set Up Show of PowerPoint kiosk mode

  • Click the drop-down arrow and choose the monitor number, such as primary monitor, secondary monitor, etc.
  • You could also see the monitor model number in the drop-down list field.

Add Sound or Slide Narrations

A PowerPoint slideshow with narration will attract more eyeballs than a silent one. Therefore, you may want to add narration to the slideshow before playing it in a business meeting, conference, or business fair. Here’s how you can add audio content to your slides to explain the whole presentation:

  • Close out the Set Up Slide Show dialog box.
  • Click the Record Slide Show drop-down list.

  • Now, choose Record from Beginning .
  • Click the Record button and start recording your narration of the PPT as the slides progress.

  • Clear Recordings on Current Slide
  • Clear Recordings on All Slides

Record and Stop buttons

  • Select Stop when done.

From now on, you also don’t need to explain the presentation when displaying it in front of a large audience group. Your narration will play automatically in the background synchronized to the slides.
