What are the fees and funding options available for postgraduate taught or research study?

Tuition fees

Tuition fees vary for different courses and are subject to revision each year. Please  search for your chosen course  of interest and navigate to the 'Fees & funding' section of the entry for all tuition fee details.  Important to know:

The fees listed on the postgraduate prospectus are for the first year of a course only - if your course continues into subsequent years, the fees for those years may differ. 

Most courses last more than a single year and it is therefore likely that tuition fees for your course will increase annually, reflecting the changes in costs of delivering your course and any changes in government policy or regulation. 

King’s reserves the right to increase fees annually. You should expect fees to increase by at least 3% on the previous academic year’s tuition fee.

Where such increases are necessary, King's will publish the new fees on its website not less than 3 months’ notice before the start of the academic year to which the fee increase is intended to apply.

Funding from the USA

Can I use Federal Student Aid to fund my studies at King's?

Federal Direct Loans are provided by the US government and are available to US citizens and eligible non-citizens. King’s College London’s Student Funding Office administers and processes all loans on behalf of eligible students. Students can use Federal Student Aid to fund their studies at King's. For full information and detail about eligibility and the application process for Federal Student Aid at King's, please visit  United States Student Loans 2023-24 .

Can I use Federal Student Aid to fund a distance learning course at King's?

If you are studying a distance learning course, or any part of your course is delivered online, then you will not be eligible for US Federal Aid. In these circumstances, students might be able to seek private study loans in the US to cover the costs of tuition and living costs. If you’re unsure or have further questions on this, please contact the Student Funding Office .

Can I use my GI Bill benefits to study at King’s?

Students can use their Post 911/GI Bill benefits to study at King’s. You can find more information by visiting US Veterans Affairs (VA) Benefits 2022-23 . You can find out if the course you wish to study has been approved for VA Benefits online by visiting the US Department for Veterans Affairs . If it has not, please let us know at Student Funding: Contact Us and we will contact the VA and request that the course be approved. Important to know:  Except for PhD programmes, distance-learning programmes cannot be approved for VA Benefits. While the GI Bill can be used to cover correspondence courses in the US, our distance learning programmes do not meet the VA’s accreditation requirements.

What happens if I’m using my GI Bill benefits to pay for my course?

• We will need you to provide your Certificate of Eligibility with details of your entitlement, and your Social Security Number.
• Once you have enrolled in September, we will submit a notification to the VA confirming your enrolment and providing details of your tuition fees.
• Due to the  GI Bill fee cap  and fluctuations in exchange rate, your GI Bill payments may be more or less than your total tuition fee amount. Credit Control will contact you to arrange payment of any shortfall, or to arrange a refund where the amount received exceeds your fees.

Important to know: If your registration status changes during your course, please contact us as soon as possible so we can notify the VA and prevent any overpayment of benefits.

Transferring to King’s

I have a student loan and have transferred to King's from another institution, what should I do?

Before starting at King’s If your Student Finance application was for a different institution and you are yet to start your course at King's, you can let Student Finance know that you have changed your course or university using Student finance login . Already started at King’s If your course has begun, you can’t update Student Finance about this change and instead, King's will need to submit a change of circumstance notification to Student Finance to let them know you have transferred to us. Please contact the  Student Funding Office to do this. The transfer of your application to King's will be subject to processing times and this can delay the funding being released into your bank account, so please let them know as soon as possible, and also whether this will cause you difficulties with key expenses, such as rent.

Entry Requirements

Entry onto a postgraduate course at King’s is subject to academic entry criteria. For a taught master’s degree, applicants will typically need a 2:1 graded bachelor’s degree or international equivalent (for example, a GPA 3.3 or more). Applicants for research degrees and PhDs will usually need to demonstrate completion of a master’s degree and good grades. Professional experience may be required in some cases. 

For example, applicants for the MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry or MClinDent in Fixed & Removable Prosthodontics will need to have a dental qualification that is accepted by the college, as well as being actively employed in a dental care environment such as a dental practice, school or hospital. 

Applicants for the MA in European Union Law will need to demonstrate achievement of a 2:1 or higher at undergraduate level in law, or a related subject. Alternatively, qualified barristers or solicitors will be eligible for this course. Consideration of work history or other relevant experience may be considered during the application process. 

Entry criteria for postgraduate courses can vary, so students should check the relevant course page on the King’s College website before applying.

• Be African nationals and permanently resident in the relevant country
• Be liable for tuition fees at the higher international/overseas rate
• Plan to commence a full-time MPhil/PhD programme at King’s College London in the 2021-22 academic year (from October 2021 and by no later than July 2022)
• Plan to conduct research that is relevant to Africa, at the intersection of two or more of the given themes or disciplines, as described below.
• Hold an admissions offer for an MPhil/PhD programme at King’s by 30 April 2021
• Apply for the scholarship by no later than 30 April 2021

• An annual stipend (living allowance) at the UKRI rate

• Research Support Grant (up to £5k/year, depending on the faculty)

• Submit an admissions application to King’s College London for a full-time MPhil/PhD degree programme with a 2022-23 start date (i.e., no earlier than 1 October 2022 and no later than June 2023) using the King’s online admissions application system –  King’s Apply *. Please upload all necessary supporting materials by this stage where possible – Refer to Step 3 for further guidance on supporting documentation.
• On the ‘Funding’ Section of your King’s Apply application, you MUST tick the box at item 5 (Award Scheme Code or Name) and enter the funding code:  2223-AFRICA ( Please copy and paste the code exactly!) .  If you submitted your admissions application before including the funding code, simply log back into King’s Apply to update the ‘Funding’ section of your application. If you experience any problems with this, please contact the admissions office via the messaging section of your application for assistance.
• Complete a separate ‘ Africa International PGR Scholarships 2022-23 Form ’ and attach this to the ‘Funding’ Section of your application on King’s Apply using the ‘File Upload’ option at the bottom of the page; under the ‘Document Category’ dropdown menu select ‘Sponsorship Document’ or ‘Other’. If you submitted your admissions application before uploading the Africa International PGR scholarship form, simply log back into King’s Apply to update the ‘Funding’ section of your application. If you experience any problems with this, please contact the admissions office via the messaging section of your application for assistance.

STEP 3.   By the deadline of 1 April 2022 (23:59 GMT), you MUST:

• Ensure that your admissions application is complete with all relevant supporting materials, as required by your chosen doctoral programme. Any outstanding supporting material/documents, such as references, transcripts, certificates, research proposal and personal statement, etc., must be provided by this deadline. For guidance on what you need to provide, please check the online prospectus page for your chosen doctoral programme. It is your responsibility to follow up on any outstanding material.

Note that proof of a valid English language proficiency test (where required) is not absolutely necessary at this point, but any outstanding English conditions (if applicable) must eventually be met in time for the start of your doctoral programme if you are successfully offered a scholarship.

*If you have already submitted an application via King’s Apply for an MPhil/PhD degree at King’s that meets the eligibility criteria, you do not have to reapply, but you must ensure that your programme start date matches the eligibility criteria and you must still add the funding code and attach a completed ‘Africa International PGR Scholarships 2022-23 Form’ to your admissions application by 18 th  March 2022, as instructed above. In addition, step 3 (above) must also be met in time.

Please note:

• This scholarship is offered directly by King’s College London, and we do not charge an application fee.
• Students who fail to input the funding code and upload a completed ‘Africa International PGR Scholarships 2022-23 Form’, exactly as instructed, will not be picked up when we extract details from King’s Apply, so it is vital that the application instructions are followed correctly!

IMPORTANT: Only those who have applied as instructed and meet the eligibility criteria can be considered for the scholarship.

London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP)

The  LAHP AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership  funds up to 80 research studentships per year across all subject areas covered by LAHP. Applications for funding should be made directly to LAHP, and open on 25th November 2024 (TBC)

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS TO FUNDER:   5pm 24th JANUARY 2025 (TBC)

UK students with excellent academic records in history of science or philosophy of science are encouraged to apply. Please note that in order to be eligible for this funding you must have established your supervisor before applying to LAHP for funding. We strongly recommend that interested individuals contact potential supervisors by late November, and you will need to have submitted a standard UCL PhD admissions application complete with references, by the STS January deadline. However you are advised to submit a complete application earlier if possible.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

The department has ‘+3’ and '1+3' recognition from the ESRC in the category of Science and Technology Studies. Studentships are available to UK and EU applicants intending to pursue a PhD and who have already received a foundation in research training (+3), or who wish to pursue a PhD after completing an ESRC-recognised MSc (including those within the department) (1+3). Applicants with such qualifications who are interested in the areas of public understanding of science, science policy research, social history of science, or the sociology of science and technology are encouraged to discuss the possibility of applying for an ESRC grant with the departmental graduate tutor at the time of their application. British Society for the Philosophy of Science

The British Society for the Philosophy of Science offers scholarships for doctoral work in the philosophy of science at a UK university. London heart research receives £12 million funding boost from British Heart Foundation

Funding will support world-leading research at three London universities

The British Heart Foundation has awarded £12 million to support world-leading cardiovascular disease research at three London universities, the charity has announced today.

Imperial College London, King’s College London and University College London will each receive between £3 million and £5 million over the next five years through the BHF’s highly competitive Research Excellence Awards funding scheme.

The awards are part of a much needed £35 million boost to UK cardiovascular disease research from the British Heart Foundation. The funding will support the universities to cultivate world-class research environments that encourage collaboration, inclusion and innovation, and where visionary scientists can drive lifesaving breakthroughs.

At Imperial College London, the award will support cutting-edge research examining not only heart but also blood vessel diseases and the potential of wearable sensors such as smartwatches to contribute to the creation of ‘digital twins’ – sophisticated models reflecting an individual’s cardiovascular function. With the potential to predict disease onset and progression, this technology could enable early intervention strategies to prevent or reduce the severity of cardiovascular disease.

The award to King's College London will support research to improve understanding of the management and treatment of heart failure. It is estimated that over one million people in the UK have heart failure, and over 30% of people admitted to hospital with heart failure die after a year. The funding will bring together an interdisciplinary team to tackle major research challenges in heart failure – including developing new treatments and improving personalisation of therapy – ensuring that findings are applicable to the diverse population of people with heart failure.

Embedded in core areas of interdisciplinary academic strength, research supported by the award to University College London will span several key themes, including therapeutic innovation in rare and inherited cardiovascular disease, as well as ethnicity and cardiometabolic health. The research aims to transform lives by delivering early phase clinical trials in rare diseases and cardiac arrhythmia, a simulation lab and robotics programme, and models of social, economic and genetic determinants of ethnic differences in cardiovascular health.

We’re delighted to continue to support research at these three outstanding institutions to address the biggest challenges in cardiovascular disease. This funding recognises the incredible work happening in London and will help to cement its status as a leading destination for cardiovascular disease research. Research Excellence Awards offer researchers greater flexibility than traditional research funding, allowing scientists to quickly launch ambitious projects that can act as a springboard for larger, transformative funding applications.

First launched in 2008, together the three universities have received nearly £38 million through the BHF’s Research Excellence Awards funding scheme to date. This funding has supported research that will lay the foundations for future breakthroughs.

We are delighted to be the recipients of another BHF Research Excellence Award. Our focus is on patients with heart failure, a condition where outcomes remain poor despite many advances in treatments. We still do not understand major aspects such as why heart failure is much more likely to develop in older people or how it varies in different patient groups, information that is essential in helping us develop more effective personalised treatments. This award allows our excellent cardiovascular clinicians and researchers to work with world-class scientists from other disciplines – such as mathematics, artificial intelligence and physics – and partners from industry to make major inroads into the problem of this life-threatening condition. Our innovative interdisciplinary strategy will lead to important advances, bringing benefits to the lives of people with heart failure.
