When you're looking for a job online, having a copy of your resume online can save you lots of time. It can also help potential employers find you, and see your skills and experience.

Indeed.com's resume service enables job seekers to upload an existing resume or create a new resume using their resume-building tool. This allows users to quickly post their resumes when applying for jobs.

Users can also make their resume visible to employers. This way, if a hiring manager sees your resume and thinks you are a good fit, he or she can reach out to you.

Learn how to use Indeed’s resume service, and how to make your resume stand out from the crowd.

First, you need to sign in to Indeed.com or create an account if you're not already registered. Then, upload your resume. Indeed recommends uploading the following file formats: Word (.doc or docx), PDF (created from a text file, not a scanned image), RTF, and TXT. Have your resume file saved in one of these file formats so that it is ready to upload from your computer.

You'll be able to edit it online once you have uploaded it. You can edit particular sections of your resume, or even add or remove sections. Indeed offers suggestions for other sections to add to your resume, ranging from “Certifications/Licenses” to “Publications” to “Awards.”

Click “View & Edit Resume” to view what the final copy of your resume will look like when employers see it. If you want to start over, simply click “Remove your resume & profile.”

You can also start from scratch and create a new resume directly on Indeed. Once you register (or sign in, if you are already registered), you can click “Build Your Resume.”

Have your  contact information ,  work history , and  education ready to enter. Indeed will ask you to fill these sections out first as a way to get started. If you don’t want to fill these out first, you can skip these sections.

You can edit particular sections of your resume, and even add or remove sections. Indeed offers suggestions for other sections to add to your resume, including “Skills,” “Awards,” and more.

Click “View & Edit Resume” to view what the final copy of your resume will look like when employers view it.

Once your resume is on Indeed, you can choose to make it “Public” or “Private.” There are benefits to both options. When you make your resume public, it is visible to anyone. Visitors to a public resume page can forward, save, or download the resume as a PDF or email you through a secure contact form. Your street address is visible only to you, and your phone number and email address are only visible when you apply for a job.

One benefit of a public resume is that hiring managers can find you and reach out to you if they think you might be right for a job. This is a good option if you are unemployed, and do not care who sees that you are job searching.

When you make your resume private, employers cannot find your resume, so they cannot contact you if they think you might be right for a job. They can only see your resume when you attach it when applying for a job. This is a good idea if you are employed, and you do not want your boss to be able to find you and see that you are job searching.

Whether or not you make your resume private, you can still download a copy of your resume for your records.

If you don't want your resume online any longer, or if you want to start with a new document, click on “Remove your resume & profile” and it will be removed from the system.

If this is the only version of your most current resume, be sure to download it before you delete it so you have a copy.

When searching  for jobs, you will see that some jobs that say “Apply with your Indeed Resume.” This means that when you click “Apply Now,” you can include your Indeed resume in the application.

If you choose to apply with a different resume, simply click “Apply with a different resume.” You can then click “Choose File” and upload the file you want to use as your resume.

If a job doesn’t have the “Apply with your Indeed Resume” link, it likely means you have to apply for the job directly on the company’s website . 

Employers looking for job candidates can search through public resumes by job title, company, education, location, or keyword. They can then download a resume as a PDF or email the job seeker through a secure contact form.

Indeed.com users can also forward resumes to colleagues or other contacts who might be interested in a particular user’s resume.

You can also choose to promote your Indeed.com resume on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter. If you are comfortable making your job search public, this is a great way to increase the visibility of your resume, and use your social network to promote your job search.

Tips for Making Your Indeed.com Resume Stand Out

  • Read samples. Before starting your resume, check out some sample resumes from people in your industry. Also, look at some of the public Indeed resumes . You can search by job title to get a sense of what other people in your field include in their resumes.
  • Consider adding a headline or summary. Under the “Basics” section of the Indeed resume, you can include an optional headline and summary. A headline is a brief phrase that highlights what makes you stand out as a candidate. A resume summary is slightly longer – a couple of sentences or bullet points – and goes into more detail about how you might add value to a company . Consider adding one or both of these as a way to show hiring managers, at a glance, why you are a great candidate.
  • Know what employers are looking for. Because you are using one resume for many jobs, you want to make sure the resume is tailored to the specific industry in which you are job searching. Most job search sites allow you to upload your resume. You would typically do this when registering for an account. Fortunately, many of the main job boards do not charge job seekers for access to profile creation and resume upload features. Instead, sites like Indeed charge employers a fee to browse through their pool of resumes.

Job seekers should be careful using resume builder tools like the Indeed resume builder . They are not optimized for applicant tracking systems (ATS) systems and the formats aren't eye-catching.

Is my information safe? 

Job board sites often allow you to choose whether you want your resume to be public. If you don't want your resume to be viewed by just anyone, do your research to see exactly who will be able to access it. Moreover, sites like Indeed will block out your street address along with your email and phone number which will be visible only to employers you apply or respond to.

How to upload your resume on Indeed

If you do decide to post your resume to Indeed, the process is simple and straightforward. Just follow these steps to quickly complete the upload process.

1.       Select the upload your resume button

Begin the process by visiting Indeed’s home page. There, you will find the “Upload your resume” link at the upper right of the page. Clicking on that link will bring up another window that allows you to enter your email address or sign in using Google and other options. Once you do that, you will be taken to a page that allows you to upload your resume to the site. You can do that now or select the skip option and upload the document after you complete your account creation process.

2.       Create an account

To upload and maintain your profile on Indeed, you will need to create an account. Whether you upload your resume immediately or skip that step, you will next be taken to your profile page. You can add as much or as little personal information as you’d like and create a password to secure your account. You will also be asked to confirm your email.

3.       Make sure your resume is in the right format

Indeed also provides a resume format tool that you can use to make sure that your document aligns with the site’s template format. As you do so, make any adjustments needed to ensure that the site puts your information in your desired resume sections . You can also use this time to proofread the resume, or tailor it to any specific role that you are interested in seeking.

4.       Adjust your settings

Once you are done with your formatting, you should choose your searchability settings. There are two options here: you can opt to limit searchability or choose to make both your resume and profile open to public view. The latter option will make it easier for any employer or recruiter to find you. However, if you don’t want everyone to see this information, you might want to select the former option.

I can't believe how many of my job seeker clients don't know this one mistake, and it could be preventing so many of you from putting your best foot forward and landing an interview.

But the truth is, your efforts to create an excellent first impression might go to waste if you use an Indeed resume instead of your own.

What you should know about applying to jobs with an Indeed resume.

When you spend your time and energy making your resume look great , you want to make sure the potential employer is seeing the resume you want them to see.

Especially on a popular job site like Indeed , where standing out from the competition is essential.

So when you sign up or log into Indeed.com, it will ask you to create an "Indeed Resume."

If you do create an Indeed resume, you'll notice that it's EXTREMELY basic. There are a few templates on Indeed's online resume builder, but from a design and ATS readability standpoint, they're pretty awful.

And when you choose that Indeed resume, that's what Indeed will upload to every job you apply to. Not your own, professional, unique resume.

All that effort you put in to make your resume stand out, for nothing. Booo. 

Should I use an Indeed resume?

Indeed gives you a choice when uploading your resume and applying to jobs on their site:

  • You can upload the nicely designed PDF version of your unique and  professional resume .
  • Or, you can upload the Indeed resume to the job posting.

When you apply to jobs, if it says "Apply using your Indeed resume," it will upload that basic, boring resume, and NOT the real, professionally designed PDF version of your resume.

Since most jobs accept the Indeed resume,  Indeed will apply to MOST jobs with that boring version.

Indeed gives a  video explanation here  about which resume gets sent to the employer - an Indeed resume or your own, if you need a visual.

So, unbeknownst to many job applicants, Indeed is applying to MOST jobs for you with the basic, plain text resume, and NOT your nice PDF resume. 

Thousands of my customers have created beautiful, unique resumes using my resume templates  in order to STAND OUT from the competition, only to get lost in the crowd with a basic resume when they apply on Indeed.

So, how do you make sure the employer gets your nice, unique resume instead?

Don't create an Indeed resume, at all. 

Just upload the PDF version of your nice resume to each job.  And while you're at it, tailor that resume to each type of job you apply to (learn how in my bonus resume writing guide , included free with each resume template purchase).

But if you're OK with Indeed sending the employer the basic Indeed resume, then by all means, do it! 

But if you want the employer to see your actual, professionally designed resume, just don't make an Indeed resume.

The Indeed resume is basic for a reason - it's designed to be easily parsed on the site by their ATS.

The bad part is that your resume will look like that of every other job applicant who's also using an Indeed resume. 

So if you use an Indeed resume, your content better be on point  if you want to stand out.

While it's an easy option, you risk not being noticed, and not making a unique or great first impression, which is the main purpose of using a professionally designed resume template.  

And we all know how important that first impression is when you're applying to jobs with a lot of competition. 

You can do much better choosing a one column, ATS friendly resume template  that still looks like you put some major effort in, like this:

Why are Indeed Resumes Recommended?

The Indeed resume is recommended because it is designed to be easily parsed on their site by their applicant tracking system, and makes it easier to apply to many jobs at once. 

Great for Indeed, but not great for you, who's trying to stand out from your competition. :)

Knowing how essential making a great first impression is, my professional opinion is that you should apply to all jobs with the PDF version of your own, unique resume , no matter what job site it is. 

The choice is yours, but now you are informed enough to make that decision.

Sometimes, an F can be a good thing .

Take the so-called F-method. It's a way of organizing your rĂ©sumĂ© so that a recruiter can read the most important parts across the top — like the upper portion of the letter F.

The next most essential info goes farther down with keywords or points sticking out like the arm on an F.

The idea behind the framework is to help someone looking over your résumé get to the good stuff right away. That's because recruiters might spend only seconds scanning your work history and other accomplishments, and you need to make sure you really stand out, really quickly.

"The skills section on my résumé is in that 'F.' It's in that direct line of sight," Lee Woodrow, owner and principal consultant at Bigger Fish Executive Branding , told Business Insider.

Highlighting the top information right away is all the more important in an environment where it's getting harder to get desk jobs — and where the ease of applying means recruiters are often overrun with applications.

'Buzzword bingo'

Woodrow, who's been writing résumés for others for many years, said the top of a CV built around the F-method should include essential information about the value you bring: details like who you are professionally, what area your expertise is in, and which industries you've worked in.

"It's an elevator pitch," he said. That information belongs at the top near your name, he said, so that it gets seen. "That entices the reader to read on."

It's also important, Woodrow said, to have the right words and phrases up high where a busy recruiter can see them.

"It's like buzzword bingo," he said.

This is often important when recruiters are trying to fill technical roles. They might not have a lot of background in the particulars of a job, so they might be on the hunt for phrases or words that a hiring manager has flagged.

Setting your résumé up with the F-method can mean a break from traditional formats, such as listing your work experience in reverse chronological order, which may surprise some.

But Woodrow said floating the most important ideas to the top makes sense if, for example, your most relevant experience for a job isn't tied to your latest role. Or, in other cases, he said, a job posting might call for someone with a master's degree or a Ph.D.

"Why would you put it lower down on page two or three? You'd want it on page one somewhere — highlighting it in that area which is in the 'F,'" Woodrow said.

In any case, he said, it's important to keep the most relevant information on the first page of a résumé.

Have a few goals in mind

Woodrow said one goal for your résumé should be ensuring it can be easily read by the applicant-tracking software companies often use to sift through job applications. Another aim should be having clear section titles so the document is a breeze for a recruiter to navigate. Highlight things like relevant job experience for a role you're going for, he said.

Last, Woodrow said, a résumé needs to influence a decision-maker by giving proof of your accomplishments. He recommends including three brief examples on the first page about how you solved a problem. To do this, describe a situation, give context, and use metrics from the business, if possible, to demonstrate how you improved a situation.

It's an abbreviated version of the STAR technique , sometimes used in interviewing, and involves describing a situation or task, actions, and results.

Kyle Samuels, founder and CEO of the executive search firm Creative Talent Endeavors , told BI that using the F-method to lay out a résumé can make sense for technical roles where a recruiter needs to know you have a certain amount of experience with, say, a particular programming language or modeling.

But in other cases, where a job might be more senior, artificial intelligence tools that do a first pass on a stack of résumés might make the F idea somewhat moot because AI bots can scoop up huge volumes of information.

"It kind of feels like a poor man's AI," Samuels said, referring to the F-method.

He said that with a role like a VP of marketing, you might have several candidates who would be a great fit.

"We're not expecting to see the exact same formatting or skills or experience, and so we really pore through the résumé," Samuels said.

That's why, especially when recruiting for more senior roles, there's little substitute for reading a résumé thoroughly, he said.

"I study it like the Torah," Samuels said.

When I asked Sir Keir Starmer a couple of weeks back if he was ruthless, he said he was - but qualified it.

His ruthlessness was trained firmly on trying to get a Labour government that "could change this country for the better".

He was "not ruthless for [his] own ambition" - nor was it ruthlessness for the Labour Party, he said.

"I'm ruthless for the country," said Sir Keir. "The only way we'll bring about change in the country is if we are ruthless about wining the general election."

But that ruthlessness is now blowing up and knocking the party's election campaign off course.

After a slick first week, Labour is having its first crisis, as the row over whether to de-select Diane Abbott has seized the headlines and muddied the message.

It has prompted, not just open splits at the top of the party, but wider questions about whether Starmer is purging the Labour Party as left-wing candidates are blocked from standing and loyalists are being drafted into safe seats.

Ms Abbott herself has called it a purge, while Andrew Fisher, who worked in Jeremy Corbyn's team, asked: "Is it racism, sexism, factionalism or a combination of all? Either way, it looks appalling."

After previously iron-tight discipline, the party is beginning to fray at the edges.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is well known for his abstemious diet - saying that he engages in intermittent fasting while also enjoying Coca-Cola as a treat.

The campaign trail, however, is known to be a hard place to keep to a nutritionally optimal lifestyle - even if you are the PM.

Speaking to journalists today, Mr Sunak says he is eating "far too much chocolate" and enjoying "too many pieces of cake".

He went on: "My normal fitness has taken a bit of knock, but I am walking a lot, if nothing else, but eating far too much chocolate on the road.

"Because we are getting out and about talking to lots of people, that is keeping me fit, just running around the country trying to talk to as many people as possible."

It's 10pm and another busy day in the general election campaign is wrapping up.

All the parties have been on the campaign trail as we remain more than a month out from election day.

Labour's row over a so-called "purge" of candidates from the left of the party has continued to dominate.

However, there was some good news for Labour as the Conservative former MP Mark Logan announced he was defecting.

  • Sir Keir Starmer   launched his party's election campaign in Wales , alongside the embattled first minister , where he reiterated his message of "change" and "national renewal" - and said Rishi Sunak didn't catch them out with the early election call;
  • But the accusation that he is blocking left-wing candidates from standing for the party is overshadowing the party's messaging, with his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn telling Sky News he is "clearly intervening" in a "purge" ;
  • The Labour leader denied that he is doing so , however, insisting the party wants "the highest quality candidates";
  • He also praised Diane Abbott - who claims she has been blocked from standing - as a "trailblazer", but added: "No decision has been taken to bar her";

  • Speaking to Sky News, he  defended the PM's assertion that interest rates would fall under a government led by him, saying although the Bank of England is "independently" responsible for interest rates, he claimed Labour would fund spending through borrowing, which would see higher interest rates;
  • But Mr Hunt also refused to commit to lowering prices amid this cost of living crisis by cutting VAT, saying prices are "decided in a market economy".
  • Elsewhere, the  Green Party  has launched its election campaign , saying they want to win at least four seats in parliament to ensure Labour are "pushed beyond the timid change they are offering".
  • The  Lib Dems  have been unveiling their plans for a mental health professional to work in every school - and Sir Ed Davey went down a waterslide .
  • The SNP leader, John Swinney, has been out campaigning in Edinburgh.
  • Plaid Cymru  has launched its campaign in Bangor, declaring it's "time to kick the Conservatives out of power".
  • And  Reform UK  has launched its legal immigration policy , which consists primarily of an "employer immigration tax" to incentivise businesses to employ British workers;
  • Nigel Farage also took the time to rule out a deal with the Tories .

As we reported earlier, Faiza Shaheen was previously running to be Labour's MP in Chingford and Woodford Green.

However, the party withdrew their support yesterday, and there are now accusations this is part of a "purge" of left-wing candidates.

Ms Shaheen stood in the seat in 2019, losing to incumbent Conservative Iain Duncan Smith.

Now, Labour has announced who will be standing for them in the seat instead.

Shama Tatler has been chosen to contest Chingford and Woodford Green.

Ms Tatler is a Labour councillor in Brent.

The full list of candidates for Chingford and Woodford Green is:

  • Josh Hadley, Liberal Democrats;
  • Yousaff Khan, Workers Party of Britain;
  • Paul Luggeri, Reform UK;
  • Shama Tatler, Labour;
  • Iain Duncan Smith, Conservative Party.

As we reported earlier, the former Conservative MP Mark Logan has defected to Labour.

He is not standing to be an MP again.

In a statement, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: "Voters across the country are looking to Labour for change. I am pleased Mark Logan has taken the decision to vote for Labour at this upcoming general election.

"After 14 years of Tory failure, voters are returning to Labour because they can see that we are a changed party and back in service of working people. 

"It's time to stop the chaos, turn the page and rebuild Britain."

No major party had much of a TikTok presence before the general election was called. 

Now, they're racing to build them on the fly.

But it's not all about follower count - while Reform leads in that field, it's Labour who are making the most of this key digital battleground.

One of the Tories' favourite attacks on Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has been to label him "Sir Softy" for an allegedly weak stance on crime.

Well, he somewhat lived up to that moniker today - for very different reasons.

He was in South Wales today on the campaign trail, where he served ice cream to day trippers on Barry seafront.

Faiza Shaheen, who was until yesterday set to be the Labour candidate for Chingford and Woodford Green, has released a statement and spoken to Sky News in the wake of the row.

Writing on X, she said the central Labour Party withdrawing their backing comes at "the end of a systematic campaign of racism, Islamophobia and bullying from some within the party when I first announced that I wanted to run for Labour again".

Sky News has contacted Labour for comment.

Ms Shaheen previously stood for the seat in 2019, and enjoyed visits from the then shadow minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Speaking to Sky presenter Gillian Joseph , Ms Shaheen says she was suspended because of 14 posts on X over 10 years.

However, she played down the fact she "liked" a post from US comedian Jon Stewart in 2014 in which he criticised Israel - saying she was not "pressed particularly on that".

Asked about the claims of racism, Islamophobia and bullying, Ms Shaheen says she will "put out" evidence.

She says she made a complaint in October or November about something posted in a WhatsApp chat.

"It took six months for them to come back to me and even then they were like, we consider... it is closed," Ms Shaheen says.

She adds that she "really upset" when Sir Keir Starmer said Labour was searching for the "best" candidates.
