So, you’ve chosen to write about the use of mobile or cell phones while driving as a persuasive essay. This isn’t as straightforward question as it might appear. While pretty much everyone would agree that mobile or cell phones should never be used as you drive, the situation is a bit more complicated than the demand to just ban cell phones while driving. One of the biggest problems of this case is texting while driving (don't text and drive!) Consider, for instance, the use of hands-free kits as a compromise – are they just as much of a distraction?

Start off your introduction with a hook that grabs your audience’s attention, then dive into your thesis, or statement of purpose, which should set out the ultimate point you are attempting to persuade people of. See the samples below for some ideas on how to write these.

As you carry on into the body of your essay, create an outline of your points, followed by the evidence you’ll use to back up those points. You can use any kind of evidence in persuasive essays, whether that’s anecdotes, stats, or just emotional pleading. It’s up to you. You should have at least three points of evidence in the body of your essay.

Then, as you draw toward the conclusion, make sure you briefly go over all the points you made. This is your last chance to remind your audience of what you are trying to persuade them to do.

Cell phones are troublesome while driving. When a driver keeps talking or listening to music he or is not supposed to focus off the road. A cell phone makes a great difference. It is not forbidden to talk to a passenger but it is not recommended to talk to an invisible cell phone communicator. The use of cell phones is the most common distraction, but the use of a hand-held cell phone increases the risk by 1.3 times, which is less than reaching for items on the seat or in the glove compartment. New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, California, Washington State, Utah, and Washington, D.C. prohibit drivers from using hand-held cell phones, irrespective of weather conditions: at all times, not only on wet and icy roads when a driver decides on dialing or text messaging. According to recent research, a driver talking over a cell phone is four times more endangered to collide with another vehicle than a driver who does not use a cell phone while driving. Cell phone distraction causes 2600 deaths in the United States annually. Drivers may be allowed to use cell phones in traffic jams but they must be fined if they use a cell phone while driving at moderate or high speeds, at crossroads, and on twisting and turning roads. Can you do without using your cell phone while driving? The use of cell phones may result in a driver’s slower reaction while breaking or regaining speed. It may cause accidents but it may be a coincidence with some other action. So, the use of cell phone is not desirable because it involves a driver in a multi-task activity while driving. Young drivers are banned or restricted from using cell phones in 18 American states. In California, young drivers will be ticketed for using any mobile device. I do not know how a young driver will write a term paper on a laptop computer while driving but it is banned as well as a cell phone while driving. Although cell phones may cause problems, no research is available to point to the rise in deaths cause by the use of cell phones while driving. A cell phone, like any mobile device, simple makes a list of possible causes of accidents longer. But safety is safety, so while driving people should be obedient to publicly accepted behavior. A driver may use a cell phone when he or she stops the car. But in foggy weather or on wet and icy roads this driver may be injured by another moving vehicle that will not expect it there. Cell phones are life-threatening means of communication while driving. To be on the safe side, it would be fine to ban the use of cell phones while driving.

Users are increasingly using cell phones currently. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that around 800,000 drivers use their cell phone every day (NHTSA, 2004). Cell phones are a huge distraction to drivers, as well as others who are near the driver being distracted, due to the attention being taken away from the driver. Like changing a stereo, who would want to be distracted by averting their eyes towards their phone? Texting and the conversations that take place on the cell phone cause accidents, and these two certainly represent the main causes. Any use of cell phones should be prohibited due to the dangers it causes to the driver and drivers around the one being distracted.

The use of cell phones while driving is dangerous. Fatal accidents have and will continue to occur with cell phones. There are clearly enough distractions on the road that one must be cautious of, so to handle an automobile safely, such as other automobiles, pedestrians, animals, signage, and many others. The added weights that cell phones convey, in terms of usage and stimuli, are too much for any driver on the road. Cell phone stimuli create an unsafe environment for the driver and those around. From a January 2010 report from the National Safety Council, 28% of car crashes (1.6 million accidents) are caused by cell phone conversations and texting (III, 2010).

Cell phones can delay reaction times, especially those that are hand-held. Other cars and pedestrians become targets when one’s reflexes are undermined with the cell phone. Research demonstrates a reduction of brain activity by 37% (Nationwide, 2009). Thus, a driver’s ability to concentrate is severely undermined with regards to a cell phone conversation or other distraction posed by the cell phone.  According to the NHTSA, 5,780 deaths and 515,00 personal injuries have been caused by driver distractions (III, 2010).

A conversation, albeit with a passenger or by cell phone, draws the attention of the driver away from the road to a degree. Additionally, the driver may not be able to hear surrounding sounds while driving, which is important in many cases, such as sounds from emergency vehicles. Studies have been performed on the comparisons between the danger of cell phone use and normal conversations with a passenger while driving. While there is some literature that has documented the risk of passenger conversations while driving, there are studies that demonstrate the increased danger with cell phone use in comparison. A University of Utah (Drews, 2004) simulation confirms the increased risk of cell phone conversations to passenger conversations.  In these and other experiments, drivers are less distracted while talking to passengers than they are when speaking to someone on a cell phone.  This literature confirms the dangerous status of cell phone use while driving, as it is evident that cell phone conversations are more dangerous than those with a passenger.

Other considerations add onto the distractions. As not all drivers use hands-free capabilities while speaking on the road, this incurs a level of danger.  One less hand is not conducive for safe driving.  When multitasking drivers who use a cell phone couple this use with something else, such as eating or writing down a note, driving safety is further compromised and compounded. As of March 2010, seven states have passed laws requiring hands-free devices when one uses a cell phone while driving. Banned are cell phones while driving in California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah and Washington, plus Washington, D.C and the Virgin Islands (GHSA, 2010). An offender may not have to incur of a traffic offense to be able to be cited for cell phone use while driving. Novice drivers are not able to use a cell phone when driving in twenty-three states. Bus drivers are not able to use the phone on a bus when passengers are present for seventeen states and the District of Columbia (GHSA, 2010).

As one might imagine, driving with the cell phone is made even more unsafe when the act of texting is considered. Texting truly undermines the safety of drivers, even more than that of normal cell phone use on the road. Twenty one states and the District of Columbia ban text messaging for all drivers. In fifteen of these states, and the District of Columbia, this is a primary enforcement. States also display bans for texting, only for drivers (GHSA, 2010). While a number of states have banned texting while driving, further measures are needed.  Universal laws should be imposed with stricter consequences.  As texting may become a more main stream of communication as opposed to oral conversation, texting may become more dangerous than normal cell phone usage. Knowing that cell phone usage should be prohibited while driving based on earlier stats, it becomes evident and urgent to ban texting while driving. While there is limited testing on the subject, research has demonstrated increased danger with texting while driving.  An unreleased study from the University of Utah saw accidents related to texting increase six times (Livadas, 2007). Further studies have demonstrated increased risk in auto accidents from texting, even as text messaging rose in the late 2000s as attention increased. 200,000 accidents are listed by a source from drivers texting while they are driving on their cell phones (III, 2010).

Research has also demonstrated a higher risk of impairment with cell phone use while driving than alcohol use.  This finding is quite shocking.  Intoxicated drivers are not legally permitted to drive automobiles; any equal or higher risk to it should be very revealing. The University of Utah Psychology department studied this in 2003.  The findings demonstrated, and the study concluded, that cell phone use was more impairing than driving intoxicated (Strayer, 2003).  From these results, cell phone use while driving is more dangerous than drunk driving.

Cell phone use while driving is simply not safe. Cell phone usage places a number of limitations on the driver of an automobile, and it has been demonstrated in terms of reaction time, stimuli, and other factors that contribute to its inherent danger. Prohibiting cell phone use is the most important way to help make the roads a safer place. Prohibiting cell phone use will help to eliminate the current dangers posed by driving while talking on the cell phone. Furthermore, more uniform and stronger measures should be implemented against texting, which should go above and beyond the ramifications of driving while talking on a cell phone. Eliminating talking on the cell phone and texting would inevitable produce safer roads and less traffic accidents.  Educating drivers about the dangers of cell phone use while driving can help lessen these dangers. There are enough dangers and distractions on the road today to allow cell phone usage to threaten safe roads.

How to Reduce the Risks of Phone Use While Driving

Study after study has shown that using a phone while driving can be dangerous. But although some safety advocates say you shouldn’t use a phone at all when you’re behind the wheel, that’s not realistic, considering that smartphones—with their integrated digital assistants—have become the go-to device for many people to get directions, play audio, contact others, and obtain information. A phone can also be your most important aid in an emergency. And if your car is operating as a ride-share vehicle, using the services’ apps is an integral part of doing business. The key is to minimize unnecessary phone usage and to use your phone as safely as possible when you must. We have some advice.

How bad is using a phone while driving?

In a 2018 study , the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that more drivers today are “manipulating” their phones while driving—performing such handheld activities as dialing, texting, accessing websites, entering destinations, and choosing music. The IIHS said this increased the risk of a fatal crash by an estimated 66 percent and contributed to more than 800 crash fatalities on US roads in 2017, the latest year for which data was available. Those fatality figures include both distracted drivers and any innocent drivers involved in the crashes. The number of injury-related nonfatal crashes is likely much higher.

“Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says. “At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.” Similarly, a 2018 study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (PDF) found that any “visual-manual cell phone interaction” nearly doubles the odds of a crash, triples the odds of driving off the road, and increases the odds of rear-ending another vehicle by more than seven times. Interestingly, it also found that simply having a cell phone conversation didn’t result in any significantly higher risk than when driving normally.

Organizations such as the National Safety Council and the National Transportation Safety Board recommend that people not use their phones at all while behind the wheel. On the other hand, Ian Reagan, an IIHS senior research scientist, notes in a 2015 report about in-car voice-control systems (PDF) that the right tools can help. “In an ideal world, drivers wouldn’t do anything but drive while the vehicle is moving. But people are increasingly plugged in at all times,” he says in the report. While using a phone can be inherently distracting on some level, he notes that “it’s possible to reduce some types of distraction through system design.”

How you can reduce the risks

Mount the phone near eye level

For navigation and other essential tasks while driving, a great step any driver can take is to add a smartphone mount in their vehicle. • By eliminating the need to hold the phone, you can keep both hands on the wheel, so you’ll have optimal control if you need to quickly swerve to avoid an obstacle.
• Having your phone mounted nearby and closer to your face than, say, if it were sitting in a cup holder or a console bin encourages the use of voice commands to dial numbers, enter destinations, choose music, and send short messages. If your car doesn’t have built-in Bluetooth, you can also use a Bluetooth kit to route the phone’s audio through your car’s audio system. This makes it easier to hear directions, music, and phone calls, which could lessen the need to reach for the phone to adjust the volume.
• If you do have to touch the phone, placing it in a convenient, nearby spot at the dash level makes it easier to reach and more like adjusting a car stereo, which, according to a 2013 report by the NHTSA (PDF), has “little effect on driving performance ... or crash risk.”

Use a phone-friendly in-dash system

Using a system that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can make phone use less dangerous and improve your overall driving experience. These features mirror the phone functions that you’re already used to, and they place them on a car’s large infotainment display. Instead of having to work with a small phone screen, using these features simplifies the interface with larger buttons, which are easier to see and interact with. This basically makes using your phone similar to operating a car’s audio or built-in navigation system.

These features are popular in new cars, and they are now commonly available in many add-on car-audio systems , so you can probably find one that fits your vehicle, even if it’s an older or less expensive model . In our tests, we found that our top pick made connecting and using a phone easier than other models did. That’s essential to minimizing distraction.

Try a “do not disturb while driving” mode

Minimizing the number of incoming messages and calls can also reduce the distraction of having a phone in the car. Many phones let you do this through a “do not disturb while driving” feature. You can set the one for iPhones (iOS 11 and later) to automatically activate when the phone senses motion or connects to a car via Bluetooth. Depending on your settings, it can limit incoming messages and calls to ones you want to come through, and if a message is urgent, you can have Siri read it aloud. You can also set up an automatic reply with a custom message that goes to people trying to message you. While the phone’s screen normally stays dark in this mode, the app still lets you use Maps to navigate. An editor on Wirecutter’s tech team says this feature works very well.

Google built a similar feature into its Android OS, but it’s available only in its Pixel 2 and 3 phones . For other Android phones, you can use third-party apps, such as Driving Detective and Drivemode , to get similar functionality, although we haven’t tried them.

An alternative for Android phone owners is the Android Auto app , which limits your phone’s usage mainly to navigating, listening to audio, conducting hands-free calls, and sending and receiving messages by voice. As with the “do not disturb while driving” apps, you can set this one up to turn on automatically when it detects you’re in a car. In our experience, the Android Auto app works well, but we recommend using it with a good smartphone mount.

Focus on the road

We agree with safety advocates who say that phone use should be kept to a minimum. Good tools can help you stay safe, but the most important aid in reducing your risk is your own common sense. Make the road your number one priority. Even if you’re using your phone only through voice commands or by pressing the occasional button or two, don’t try to do this when there are other things to focus on. If you’re approaching an intersection, passing a car, merging, or maneuvering through a crowded street, wait a minute. And if you need to do something that you can’t accomplish with a voice command or a quick button press—looking up an address, setting up a playlist or an audiobook, sending an extended message—do it before you begin driving or after you find a safe place to pull off the road. We think a smartphone can be a valuable aid in the car—like stereos and navigation systems can be—so making it easy to access and being careful about how you use it can prevent it from becoming a deadly distraction.

Why should the use of cellphones while driving be banned?

The reason why cell phones should be banned while driving is that the majority of our drivers today are young teens and adults who are still learning the rules of the road. Many accidents are caused by the misuse of a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle.

In 2011, 350 fatal car crashes from the misuse of cell phones were recorded and the number continues to increase. This can be prevented if cell phones are just turned off and put away while driving. It's time to make a change and start cracking down on the safety of our roads.

I argue the fact that cell phone companies are coming up with new ways of using cell phones while driving, like hands free headsets, or built-in Bluetooth in manufactured cars. This shows young adults that it's OK to use cell phones while driving, and above all the new technology encourages young adults to use cell phones while driving.

Why shouldn't the phone companies be punished or regulated?

Perhaps people of a certain age should only get a certain type of phone, which could determine if they're driving or not depending on location. Furthermore, why don't parents talk to their kids about road safety and the proper way of using cell phones?

Nevertheless, using this gadget while driving is life threatening. Various studies have clearly highlighted the obvious danger of using a cell phone while driving. For example, the phone may easily cause distraction that may result to an accident. Use of phones while driving causes risks to both the driver and others. In essence, the practice increases the risk of accidents, injuries, fatalities and property damage. The issue of using a phone while driving is a concern of both the motorists and policy makers. Various organizations and some communication industries have engaged in educative campaigns that promote the cautious use of phones while driving. The safety concerns attached to this issue has also obliged policymakers to rethink whether the use of cell phone while driving should be controlled or banned. Evidently, some states have already imposed banned against the use of the phone while driving. The essay argues the need of avoiding the use of cell phone while driving because it is evident that the habit is harmful. The habit is also anti-social and associated with various safety concerns to both self and others. Cell phone should not be used while driving because they cause distractions. The need of avoiding this practice is also apparent that people who use a phone while driving present bad driving habits. In reference to the accessible statistics, it is evident that using a phone while driving is a harmful habit. Reliable studies have affirmed that the phone users present higher levels of impairment than intoxicated drivers. Statistics highlight that people who use phones while driving is have high chances of causing accidents (Winston, McDonald & McGehee, 2014). The apparent relationship between the use of a cell phone while driving and the likelihood of causing an accident is evident that the number of the accidents recorded has increased with the increased usage of phones. Cubranic-Dobrodolac, Cicevic, Dobrodolac, & Nesic study highlights that about 68% of young drivers use a cell phone while driving. This asserts that in the modern generation, substantial group of drivers is using phones while driving, which explain the rapid increase in the number of accidents in the last decades. The study further identifies a very close relationship between the frequency of the phone usage and the incidents of accidents. Taking into account of the apparent evidence of the harmful effect of using a phone while driving, the need of discouraging this habit becomes indisputable. As evident in the reviewed cases, the act of using phone while driving is anti-social and is likely to result to increased accidents. Using the phone while driving is an anti-social habit the puts live at the risk. A habit with such detrimental consequences as threatening life cannot be justified under any ground. Although some activists argue that denying people a freedom to use their phones while driving translate to violation of one’s freedom, endorsing the practice on such grounds is not logical considering its fatal consequences. Besides being one’s right to decide whether to use or not use a phone while driving, each person also have the right to live and be safe from being harmed by the actions of people who are reckless with their lives. It is disturbing to learn that a reckless driver does not only threaten his/her life but also poses risk to others. In view that the actions of each driver in the road determine the overall safety of the public, there is the need of being concerned of the habit presented by each driver (Silver, 2014). Using a phone while driving affects the driver’s competence as well as increasing his or her response time to a danger. This increases one’s likelihood of causing accidents that may harm others, which affirms the significance of discouraging the habit of using a phone while driving. The government has an obligation of protecting the public, thus affirming the rational of instituting binding regulations to control and restrict individuals who engage in this anti-social and harmful habit (Weimer, 2007). The anti-social habit of using phone while driving causes distraction that may make one lose focus, thus causing an accident. Various studies have also confirmed that using a phone causes distraction, thus affecting the driver’s ability. Drivers should be banned from using phones while driving because they essentially destruct them, making them vulnerable to cause accidents (Narad, Garner, Brassell, Saxby, Antonini, et al., 2013). Road Safety strategies argue that phones have the potential of affecting the driver’s competence because they engage eyes and hands. Consequently, the driver may easily lose focus, causing accident. In this lieu, some strategists advice the drivers to stay away from the phone while driving or at least use hands-free devices to make it less destructing. Gozzi (2008) identifies phone as a potential destructor by noting that people draw attention to their phone such as through texting such that they become unaware of their physical surroundings. The scholar describes the experience offered by the phone as the “Cell Phone Zone.” Gozzi’s study noted that when people are in this state they are essentially drawn out of the current physical reality. A driver who is in such a state can easily cause accident. The study further links the act of texting with serious safety concerns (Gozzi, 2008). Findings from O'Connor, Whitehill, King, Kernic, Boyle, et al. study also supports these sentiments by showing that most accidents out of the cases reviewed heightened with the anticipation of incoming message or phone call. The study targeted establishing the psychological factors associated with the vehicle crash and phone use. The study explained the apparent relationship between phone use and the likelihood of the occurrence of an accident in terms of anticipation, emotional reaction, activity interference and problem recognition. Silver (2014) research highlighted significant relationship between the reported car crash incidence and the use of phone while driving. It is factual to state that phones are potential destructors, which asserts the need of banning their use while driving. When phones are used while driving, they cause distraction that makes them engage in poor driving habits, which readers them prone to accidents. Just like individuals in bad influence of alcohol or drugs, drivers who use phone mainly engage in poor driving habits. Such drivers often ignore or break traffic rules since they are never attentive. Zhao, Reimer, Mehler, D'Ambrosio, & Coughlin conducted a study to evaluate the predisposing habits that make drivers who use phone present high rates of accidents. In unearthing this aspect, the researcher sought to examine the driver’s performance by reviewing self-reported driving habits. The study found that individuals who used phone while driving presented high tendencies of over speeding and passing habits. In particular, the people who used their phones while driving were found to mainly drive at high speed, change lanes more often and report high number of incidences of hard braking and high acceleration. These individuals were also often associated with higher rates of self-reported driving violations (Zhao, Reimer, Mehler, D'Ambrosio, & Coughlin, 2013). Furthermore, such drivers showed little concern of getting involved in an accident. In essence, these drivers present uncaring attitude, thus are not necessary warned or careful of their actions. It becomes indisputable that the use of phone has the potential of resulting to increased accidents by making drivers engage in reckless driving. This affirms the need of discouraging the use of phones while driving. In contrast to the discussed detrimental side effects for allowing individuals to use phone while driving, the practice is characterized with some benefits. For example, a phone can be of great help during emergencies. The phone can be used to call for immediate attention or help during such cases. Furthermore, it is not always obvious that using a phone while driving results to accidents. Some people have high capability of multitasking and present high competence in driving besides using a phone. This means that the issue of using a phone while driving only needs one to be careful and responsible. The significance of discouraging the use of phones while driving cannot be re-emphasized considering the detrimental effect of the practice. The society can hardly bear any more the suffering and losses caused by reckless driving brought about drivers who use their phones while driving. The need of discouraging the use of a phone while driving is evident in the accessible statistics that have successfully linked the two variables. Using phones while driving presents as an anti-social habit, and attract safety concerns to both self and the public. Furthermore, phones cause distractions and make people engage in bad driving habits, thus causing accidents.
