World War Z by Max Brooks: Book Review

world war z audiobook review

Synopsis from GoodReads :

“From the author of the bestselling, The Zombie Survival Guide , World War Z is for fans of zombie literature and film; for lovers of apocalyptic what-if novels; for those obsessed with the state of paranoia in which we all live—it’s a new standard in apocalyptic fiction. This brilliant novel imagines a Studs Terkel-like character traveling the world to access the impact of a war between humans and zombies. Though humans have survived World War Z, many are still haunted by those terrible years. Max Brooks sets out to reveal the people’s stories, to tell the true history of what happened. The result is a stunning and all-too believable oral history of a future conflict.”

I didn’t realize that I had checked out an abridged audiobook until I finished listening, the credits rolled, and I heard “Abridgement by…” someone. Dangit. I dislike abridgements and don’t understand why publishers do that! When I saw that the audiobook was only about five parts long, I should have realized. I’ve never paid much attention to how long the print book is; I just assumed it must be short. Oh well. Live and learn.

I can’t watch many horror movies but for whatever reason, my husband and I did watch the movie version of World War Z not long after it was released in 2013. It was pretty good and it didn’t scare me too badly. But there was one zombie who freaked me out. He went around clicking his teeth in a really intense part of the movie. Oh, that clacking noise! To this day, if my husband wants to freak me out, he’ll bare his teeth and click them at me! (I know that’s probably weird, but every relationship is weird if we’re honest, right? It’s not just us?)

Last year, I listened to Devolution , also by Max Brooks and read by a full cast. It was one of my top books of the year. I was riveted.

So you can imagine my surprise when I listened to World War Z and discovered that I was… a little bored. There. I said it. The format is very similar to that used in Devolution , with a fictional interviewer speaking with survivors of a catastrophic event. I think the difference for me was that Devolution also included a fictional journal from the main character. That made the action more intense and immediate. In World War Z , every interview takes place after the war is mostly over, so obviously the interviewee survived whatever awful event they were relating. There were a lot of politics and survival strategy and even war maneuvers. A couple of stories really caught my attention (the downed pilot immediately comes to mind, as does Mark Hamill’s military story) but most of them just didn’t catch my attention.

The full cast did an amazing job with the narration. Multiple narrators don’t always work for me but this one was absolutely fabulous!

I don’t know if this would have worked better for me if I had listened to an unabridged version. I’d definitely recommend that if you’re interested. It’s a quick listen and worth a try if you like horror. But honestly, I prefer Devolution more.

Oh no! I don’t like abridged versions either; sorry this one snuck up on you. I read this before Devolution and I liked World War Z much better, so part of it could just be that the author’s approach doesn’t feel as novel the second time around. I’m also just not very interested in or scared by big foot stories and I enjoyed the broader view provided by World War Z’s many perspectives.

And my husband and I have lots of silly in-jokes, so it’s definitely not just you 🙂

Bummer about the abridgement of this book! I’ve never made that mistake, but I did once accidentally purchase an audio book in Spanish. Fortunately, Audible let me swap it out for the English edition. 😉

World War Z has never appealed to me, but as I read your review, I was reminded of The Passage by Justin Cronin. I listened to that and The Twelve, but not the third book. If you haven’t read/listened to those, I highly recommend them. Scott Brick is the narrator and he does an outstanding job. I’m almost tempted to give the books a second read, but they’re so long!

I read The Passage years and years ago. I remember that I liked it but I also remember that it took me *forever* to finish it. I’d like to move on to The Twelve but I know I need to re-read The Passage first and I just don’t know if I have the energy for it. I did watch the short-lived show that was based on the book a few years ago but I don’t think it followed the book very closely.

That’s funny about the Spanish edition! I’ve accidentally added some Spanish language titles to my Overdrive wishlist before but at least that’s an easy fix.

STAR RATINGS GUIDE

Zombie apocalypse perfection.

The  bird ict, 💚 this is the perfect apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic zombie novel and one of my favourite books. it has everything you would want from this genre. the plague unfolds dramatically, the protagonist is likeable, but flawed, there's a clear progression of events and a haunting depiction of the aftermath. what's more, having it set out as a historical text lends it a realism that had me checking i was in the right reality. 💜 not only does it have a vast cast of well-developed characters, but a clear set of events and a haunting depiction of the aftermath. 💛 i'd recommend the apocalypse 7 and station eleven to anyone who enjoyed this., squawking the talk, 🎧 the reading of this version is simple and flawless. just expert production of a talented cast, each of whom brings a different dimension to the story. this was so realistically executed that it complements the film adaptation. indeed, this does feel like a hybrid of an audiobook and a dramatisation. impressively, despite having so many voices, i never experienced any confusion because each change of narrative was so well signposted., birds of a feather: similar audiobooks.

No spoilers for this one. Maybe next time!

+_edited.png

Visceral, disturbing and chilling in its realism, World War Z is perhaps the most famous work from the world's foremost expert on our undead counterparts. Paired with the equally gripping The Zombie Survival Guide, there is no better preparation for the inevitable uprising. "The end was near." Voices from the Zombie War. The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched firsthand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living - or at least the undead - hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

WORLD WAR Z: THE COMPLETE EDITION

WORLD WAR Z: THE COMPLETE EDITION An Oral History of the Zombie War

By max brooks | read by martin scorsese, alfred molina, and a full cast, horror • 12.25 hrs. • abridged • © 2006.

What happens after the end of the world as we know it? Humanity rebuilds, and Kirby Impoinvil (Max Brooks) is there to help survivors make sense of what happened the day the zombies came. Helping author Brooks is a host of family friends, including Alan Alda, Nathan Fillion, Paul Sorvino, Rob Reiner, Carl Reiner, Simon Pegg, John Turturro, and many others. This audio production was released to coincide with the movie of the same name. That it’s a real drama is not surprising given the stellar cast. They don't just read the book, they act it out. And don’t think this is a teen thriller. The zombies serve as a backdrop to the larger story of how humankind reacts to such an unexpected and catastrophic invasion and the inevitable conclusion that millions must be sacrificed to save the rest. New narrators include Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese, Spiderman star Alfred Molina, The Walking Dead creator Frank Darabont, rapper Common, Firefly star Nathan Fillion, Shaun of the Dead' s Simon Pegg, and members of the casts of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Heroes and more! Max Brooks will be reprising his role as The Interviewer.

The original abridged edition, released in 2006, won an Audie Award for Best Multi-Voiced Performance. Original cast members include Alan Alda, Mark Hamill, Carl & Rob Reiner, and John Turturro.

In this new classic of apocalyptic fiction that feels all too real, the Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. The documentary-style oral history records the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time.

Featuring five more hours of previously unrecorded content, this full-cast recording is read by F. Murray Abraham, Alan Alda, René Auberjonois, Becky Ann Baker, Dennis Boutsikaris, Bruce Boxleitner, Max Brooks, Nicki Clyne, Common, Denise Crosby, Frank Darabont, Dean Edwards, Mark Hamill, Nathan Fillion, Maz Jobrani, Frank Kamai, Michelle Kholos, John McElroy, Ade M’Cormack, Alfred Molina, Parminder Nagra, Ajay Naidu, Masi Oka, Steve Park, Kal Penn, Simon Pegg, Jürgen Prochnow, Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner, Henry Rollins, Jeri Ryan, Jay O. What the critics say

"What happens after the end of the world as we know it? Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award, 2014. Audies Finalist." ( AudioFile magazine)

Best Zombie Tale...ever!

#Audible1 This book is a great romp - furiously paced. Wonderfully read! The ending is realistic.

Fantastic. The Zombie book that sets the standard

I am so happy that this book doesn't follow the terrible movie. It is as Max Brooks wrote it, the abridgement not really noticeable. Amazingly clever plot device. Retrospective interviews. Normally I am not a fan of collaborative reads, much preferring a single reader. In this instance it is perfect and the readers are great. This is a legitimate 10/10 Audiobook.

This was my first audiobook

This was the first audiobook I've ever listened to and now I'm afraid I have high expectations for other audiobooks. The narration performances were so well done that I was drawn in the first 5 minutes.

Great story, great ensemble

Look at the cast, they do not disappoint. A very effective narrative device, to tell the story through retrospective interviews. I found myself totally engrossed, the time simply flew by. Looking forward to a second listen.

Great listen, but not quite what I expected

I really like Max Brooks as an author. Having watched the movie I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised on that basis. Tough to not listen to it all in one sitting. If anything I wanted more of the story at its conclusion. You won't be disappointed with this title, great work Max.

The voice acting on this book makes the whole experience very immersive! The stories are very relatable, characters from all over the globe brings the story close Fontoura reality, no matter where you from. If you like a good old storytelling, this is definitely a book for you. Have fun and hope you guys enjoy as much as I did.

One of the greatest audio books there is! I have enjoyed this one for years, only recently purchasing The Complete Edition. The narration style, based off interviews post war, is very entertaining. The huge cast of well known voice actors adds to the immersion. This book is a must listen/read every year for me. Too bad the movie wasn't even remotely close to being as good as this book. Even if you don't like 'zombies', this is a keeper.

awesome story!

great voice acting! I thought it would be more action style like the movie, however it was a very interesting story about the world dealing with the apocalypse.

Slaughterhouse-Five cover art

Visceral, disturbing and chilling in its realism, World War Z is perhaps the most famous work from the world's foremost expert on our undead counterparts. Paired with the equally gripping The Zombie Survival Guide , there is no better preparation for the inevitable uprising.

Great book however....

Ok so I have heard the abridged version that was done a while ago and this new version but I have to admit that the voice acting is 10x better in the old version than this one. I mean the japanese, german, or even american accents sound shocking!!! I have no idea what has happened in the making of this audiobook but please redo the foreign bits (outside UK) with actors that don't make jap voices sound almost german???? My opinion is stick with the original 2007 version it has more of what this book deserves rather than this one.

Potentially Offensive Actors

What did you like most about World War Z?

The story translates really well from the page to Audible due to the first person account narrative. It is still by far the most original and relevant offering in the genre. Max brooks takes the concept of a zombie apocalypse to its ultimate disturbing conclusion.

What other book might you compare World War Z to, and why?

It is pretty unique in my experience.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of the narrators?

I would love to believe that they would cast appropriate native speakers to represent the different nationalities.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The fictional recounted experiences are both moving and at times amusing.

Any additional comments?

The acting is at times offensive, particularly when other nationalities are speaking. Some seem very stereotypical, verging on racist. Still, once you are engaged in the story even this can be forgiven due to the rich scenes that Brooks is able to create. The narrative style perfectly capture the historical account of an unparalleled fictional period in our recent future.

Not at all what you'd expect

The book is okay but it's shocking that it is sold on the basis that it has anything like the movie (as the cover art suggests). Apart from the name and the fact that they're both about zombies, there is literally nothing in common between the two. The movie is an action-packed, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride. The book however is a very sedate, calm and slow series of interviews with survivors of the global zombie outbreak. Rarely do the (very capable) voice actors actually sound anything more than completely relaxed. For me, this book went from being a purchase meant for something exciting to listen to on long drives to something to help me overcome insomnia. The saddest part is that it's not the authors fault. The book, in-and-of-itself is a good book. It's almost as if the movie studio that made the film just wanted to use the catchy title and nothing else. By all means purchase and enjoy, but you should know what your getting.

Narration took me out of it.

A fun listen but some of the voice acting was distracting. Some of it was a bit overacted and if you're easily bothered by vocal fries, this won't be for you. Otherwise, some outdated politics aside, this is a nice escape in a similar (nearly) post-pandemic time.

Pleasantly Surprised

After reading a lot of the reviews on here, I was nearly put off downloading this audiobook, as there were so many complaints about the accents. But, I gave it a shot and I enjoyed it. I thought it was a good story, well told and as I haven't ever seen the film, it was brand new to me. Yes, there are a couple of irritating voices (mainly the women characters, but as there appears to only have been 1 woman actor employed, she did have her work cut out :)) Maybe I'm just not as attuned to regional accents as some, but bearing in mind they are only acting, I thought they all did a passable job. Overall, it flowed really well, in my opinion and I'm off to download another Max Brooks book.

Cool idea but lacking something

I like the idea of all the vignettes from around the war but it just left me feeling like we'd not really got the whole story. I know that's kinda of the point but it didn't completely do it for me. I still really enjoyed it though.

The story is told by a young 'unknown soldier' in the trenches of Flanders during the First World War. Through his eyes we see all the realities of war: under fire, on patrol, waiting in the trenches, at home on leave, and in hospitals and dressing stations. Although there are vividly described incidents which remain in the mind, there is no sense of adventure here, only the feeling of youth betrayed and a deceptively simple indictment of war—of any war—told for a whole generation of victims.

Publisher's Summary

A different kind of tale entirely..

Totally different from the movie, in probably a good way..? I didn't hate the movie as such.. but now I kind of want them to make a movie based on this book. *shakes fist at Hollywood * Took me a chapter or two to get into the style of this book, then I was hooked. Great narrators, some big names in there too, although some of the smaller characters I wasn't sure they'd nailed the Chinese or.French accent say. Overall a really delicious listen, I listened on the bus, at home, trying to get to sleep, at the gym, getting ready to go out, everywhere I could cram some time in to finish it. I liked the interview style of the book because if your brain tunes out for a while you don't miss anything too major in the plot. Just to let you know, I work for Audible, but the views expressed in this review are 100% my own.

why the cast change?

i this a book i come back at least twice a year but this time around its not world war z i knew and loved ....you had it right the first time....now? not so much ... the battle of yonkers was some of my all time favourite part of the book and you replaced mark hamill WHY?? im at a loss of words i love this book but i dont think ill be listening to it again ..... and anyone who is trashing this because they wanted the book from the "movie" and i use the term movie very loosely just go watch the movie and stop harping on about it the movie was a let down to anyone who loves the book

Loved the story a lot, narration above average

Although not as star studded as the other rendition of World War Z, this production is fantastic and I have listened to the book a few times. The story surprisingly had much more depth to it than I thought and the movie really did it a disservice. There were quite a few chapters where it made me think about systems and practices we have rooted in society. Saying that, the story is primarily about zombies taking over the world, and the pacing was great and did not get bogged down with hidden meaning. For the most part the narration was great. With a large cast some accents were... pretty bad. The Australian chapter particularly stands out to me as being rough. I read this book multiple times so it didn't impact my reading of it, however be aware that the narration for some chapters are a bit so/so. If I were allowed to give half stars I think 3.5 for performance would be pretty fair. Overall a great read and I recommend it to fans of the genre.

This brilliant novel imagines a Studs Terkel-like character traveling the world to access the impact of a war between humans and zombies.
