The business and money IELTS essay can be written easily, provided you stick to the narrative and follow basic guidelines. You have to spend roughly 40 minutes writing this essay, with the minimum word count being 250 words. There is no upper limit for the same. The question will ask you to present your argument in writing to a particular business and money-related statement.

Sample Answer 1-

I do not agree that businesses should do whatever they can to make a profit. I put forward my opinion based on the following ideas. Firstly, every business or institution should have a code of ethics or morality. This primarily indicates that the company should be treating all its customers/clients with respect to their individual or institutional rights. It is a given that companies may sometimes fail to earn a chunk of their profits in certain cases. However, client security is non-negotiable and should be ensured at the outset. Otherwise, these customers or clients will shift to competitors and not return to the original company or business. You can find an example of such a case some years ago when Rose Chemicals (name changed) manufactured a new kind of herbal soap without testing suitably. Hence, this led to severe side effects, rashes, and hives for many users, and many of them filed complaints in several courts across the world. The company CEO took the vital decision to recall all herbal soap products from the manufacturing line and distributors while paying compensation to aggrieved customers for their future treatment and harassment. This led to the company losing a major chunk of its business revenues in a particular year. However, it led to its image being salvaged and helping retain its core customer base. The decision was a tough one. The CEO of the organization acted courageously while understanding that failure to act would cost the company more in the future owing to the lack of clients and revenues altogether and loss of brand image and goodwill.

Secondly, for succeeding in a competitive contemporary business environment, many organizations have to take on each other at various levels. Many companies lose out on profits through reducing product prices. They do not aim for higher profits but create long-term satisfaction for clients. They do this because they want products to be sold and inventory to be cleared while satisfying customers and retaining them for the long haul. They also keep offering free delivery, incentives, coupons, free service, discounts, free online access, returns, etc. This makes older customers happier while also drawing newer ones in the bargain.

To conclude, a business where the sole objective is profit will not succeed in the long run, especially in today’s fast-evolving business landscape. Companies that put their customers and ethics first will ultimately gain and double their profits manifold in the long run. (406 words)

I agree with the statement that businesses should be doing anything they can to make a profit. I put forward my opinion based on several points. While there may be scenarios where companies may have to forego profits on account of several reasons, I believe that the abiding goal and motto of the business should be to earn profits in whichever way they deem fit in the circumstances. Businesses should always look at the silver lining and ways to maximize profits. Let me give you an example of what I am trying to opine. Suppose company A and company B are both rivals in the same business that offers organic fruits and vegetables to customers at their dedicated stores and outlets. Now, with the coronavirus-induced lockdown and restrictions at several levels by the authorities, both companies were initially suffering due to a lack of profits from their physical stores. With lower footfalls, both companies were forced to innovate. Company A announced delivery options for customers at a specific cost, hiring delivery executives on salaries based on minimum projections of per-day orders. Company B announced that customers need not come to stores and instead hired delivery executives to deliver goods to customers at no extra cost. Free delivery would be given to customers, and the executives' salaries would be borne by the company itself. A goodwill gesture, yes, but with skyrocketing demand due to the lockdown, Company A ended up earning higher profits from its delivery model, which created a new income channel and buffered for any depletion of in-store orders. Company B ended up foregoing profits instead of paying for delivery and value-added services from its pocket. With its earnings, Company A paid all salaries, retained all staff members, and contributed toward sanitization and other community welfare measures. At the same time, Company B ultimately had to lay off workers or slash their salaries in the interim to tide over things. Which company did better? Company A, of course.

Secondly, I feel that the business can be financially stable without profits and no hiring activity. It is important to keep the entire value chain running for any business, and hence a profit-oriented outlook is what is most important. Companies should always engage with their stakeholders to find out newer products/services that work, tapping unused resources to generate income and using money judiciously for future stability and expansion.

To conclude, companies should do everything they can to make profits, of course, within the bounds of the law and legal provisions. However, it is a competitive landscape out there. They should put their basic needs first, i.e. the ability to keep serving customers, keep monetary inflows coming in and keep retaining and maintaining employees and employment levels overall. Writing a business essay is not too difficult provided you follow the available templates and practice writing beforehand. You should always assess the subject of the essay first and irrespective of the scope of the topic, point out your own opinion first before proceeding further. Discuss the topic and your opinions in detail in a couple of paragraphs while also illustrating your points with examples.

Use specific vocabulary and keep it to the point without exaggeration or fluff. Use direction words for your essay along with limiting words that help you narrow down the main topic.

I do not agree with the statement that businesses should do anything they can to make a profit. I state my opinion on the following points.

First of all, every company must have its moral code. It means that a company should treat its clients properly and respect their rights. Of cause a company may lose a part of its profit but security of its clients must be on the first place. Otherwise, clients will switch to another company and never be back. For instance, a few years ago “Jonson & Jonson” produced a new type of painkillers. Unfortunately, this product was not tested properly. As a result of this many people died and received injures. The president of the company made a crucial decision to call back all painkillers from all distributors and pay to all injured customers for their treatment. It cost a lot of money for the company but it saved its image and clients. It was a very difficult decision, but the president of the company understood that it would cost him even more in the future because he would not be able to return clients’ respect. Losing customers means for a company losing its profit.

Second of all, in order to succeed in the modern world companies have to compete with each other. Many companies lose their profit decreasing prices on their products. They do not aspire for extra profit but for clients’ satisfaction. Companies do it because they want their products sold and their customers satisfied. They offer discounts, free delivery, free service, free Internet access, good return service, etc. All these are done to make their old customers happy and attract new clients.

To sum up, I think a company, which the only goal is profit will not succeed nowadays. Otherwise, companies that respect their clients and want to see them satisfied will make a fortune.

Once of the most popular methods – TV commercials often feature famous actors, sports stars and other well-known personalities, to try and persuade people to buy products, as fans of these people will be more likely to buy something that they are endorsing. For instance, a report by Procter and Gamble Philippines in 2017 revealed that their sales of detergent products reached an all-time high when they chose Kris Aquino as their product endorser.

On the other hand, the most effective modern method of advertising is online. Companies spend billions on Google Adwords and marketing through social media. The companies who use this method, are pushing their products in front of a huge audience, as social media apps are more widely used and downloaded than any TV station. They also have the chance of the product post going viral and being shared millions of times, which then promotes itself. For example, a study by the Philippine Business Club in 2015 reported that Twitter has been an effective tool in launching new products to the age group 18-25 since most young people are active on social media.

In conclusion, there are varieties of practices that can make a product popular with its consumers. The use of social media is the most effective tool in advertising in 2018 for it can reach all people in any part of the world.

Bill – An amount of money owed for goods or services. For example, a hotel bill or a gas bill
Expenditure – The action of spending money

Income – Money received either from work or investments
Making a payment – The process of paying for something
Mortgage – A legal agreement where a creditor lends money to help people buy property. The money is paid back in instalments and with interest.

Speaking Part 1

1 how much money is enough.

Well, it’s hard to answer this question as there is no exact measurement to say whether money is enough or not. It’s up to the perspectives and goals of different people. Some people want to earn more money so they can save up but some just need a certain amount of money to sustain their lives.

2 Why do people care too much about money?

I think the reason is simply that money equals power. The more money you have, the more things you can do, the more influence you have over people. No one refuses power so that’s why they give priority to money. Also, people just want to keep up with the Joneses.

3 Is money important to you?

Absolutely. I can buy things with money and give presents for my family on my own money. It makes my life more meaningful. It’s motivation to push me forward and make me work harder to enhance my life. For me, money is just never enough and if I’m satisfied with what I earn, I’ll fall behind with my fellows.

4 What do people in your country save money for?

I suppose it’s up to different purposes. While the young save money for travelling or paying tuition fees, the elderly tend to keep the money for health service and their kids. However, young people have more desire than the seniors so they often spend more than their savings.

Sample Answer

Well, I’m not good at saving money, and I tend to buy things without considering carefully. It’s hard to save if you don’t know exactly what you are saving for so what I do is to set savings goals to motivate myself in every financial decision that I make. Going to Japan has always been my biggest dream, but I’ve postponed it so many times due to lack of money. I tried to keep money myself but I still overspent and was out of money at the end of every month. I asked my mom to keep the money for me as she is better at controlling expenses. She is like my accountant and helps me to balance the expense. She also gives me advice whenever I go shopping to make sure it doesn’t set me back. We have an agreement that whenever I withdraw a sum of money, I have to save double that amount. This works wonders with me as my savings go up every month. Now I always ask myself whether it’s necessary to buy things or I can save for a rainy day. After a while, I realize I’ve set aside more money every day. I buy things within my budget and don’t waste money for unnecessary things. This method of saving money makes me feel financially secure and good about myself.

People vs money, 1 what do you think about money.

Money can do many things, both good and bad. It allows us to have freedom and a wide variety of choices. Money gives us confidence and desire to work harder so we can have a better life. You can decide where and how you want to live when you have a good income. When you do not have much money, your choices are limited. However, everything comes with a price. Having much money doesn’t mean people won’t run into problems. Most people fail to strike a balance between earning money and enjoying it, so they work day and night. They believe they’ll be happier if they have lots of money. However, for most people, such time never comes and they die unhappy and dissatisfied

2 Can human beings live without money?

It’s true that money isn’t the most important thing in this world but it’s irreplaceable in our lives. If the world were a completely free place with no expenses and people could own anything they want without money, they would no longer go to work. There would be nothing as motivation and people would work unproductively. Money stimulates people to overcome obstacles so they can enjoy their achievements to the fullest. Besides, people who have money have their own voice in society and it’s a strong encouragement for anyone

3 In your opinion, why do many people derive pleasure from spending money?

Spending money is definitely the most satisfying feeling ever. People can buy things they’ve long waited for to please themselves. Buying something new will make their day and stimulate them to work harder. The money spent isn’t necessarily on oneself but also loved ones. It makes us feel good so we will spend more money the next time.

4 Who do you think saves more money, men or women?

Well, it’s hard to say. Men’s biggest risk is their egos. They need to brag about their possessions and how much money they’ve earned, so they end up spending more money. Women tend to save money and spend it when they really need it. However, there are still exceptions when women manage money worse than men. That’s why there is no strong proof to show men or women save more money.

5 Which do you think is better for the economy of a country or area, people saving money or people spending money?

It’s such a tricky question. I guess for any economy, saving is entwined with spending. When people buy things, they will contribute a sum of money to the stores so they can pay salaries. The government also benefit from that as it’ll gain tax. If people save money, only the banks have an advantage so they can invest or set up new businesses. An ideal economy is when saving and spending balanced. It’s a rule for any economy in the world

6 Do you think the government should let people know how it spends money?

Well, actually, I don’t really care about this issue. I think the government has its own reason to not publicize everything. It can be state secrets so the authority wants to keep it private. However, If the government could go public with the amount of money it spends, it would gain trust from the public and assure them that their money is invested properly.

Young People vs Money

1 how can (or, how do) young people learn to manage their financial affairs.

From my point of view, young people should learn from their parents who have lots of experience with spending money. They will give the youngsters sound advice to keep an eye on personal expenses. The young should plan short terms and long term financial goals and review them from time to time to manage personal finance well. They need to make sure their budgets cover their savings as well in case of any unforeseen emergency

2 Do you think it’s easy for (young) people to save money?

I think it’s all about motivation. When people have specific goals, they’ll find saving money easier. For instance, lots of youngsters are working their way through university by doing some part-time jobs. They don’t feel like depending on their parents and wanting to have less burden on the family. They can save a small sum of money every month. Once young people keep that habit, they can have considerable savings for their future

3 Do young people nowadays believe in saving money?

Well, I don’t really know. It depends on their outlook, I guess. Saving money up is a good idea in case undesirable problems happen. Developing the discipline to do it over a long period of time is what most people find difficult to do. That’s why not many young people keep track with their monthly expense.

Kids and Money

1 do you think parents should give pocket money to the kids.

I do agree with that. Giving pocket money to children helps them start learning about money management. When children get pocket money, they have to make choices about spending or saving it. If they save up, they have to learn about waiting for things they want. Otherwise, kids who choose to spend are likely to use up all the money. After a few months, they’ll know how to spend within their budget. Paying the children to do chores also makes them more hard-working. Money doesn’t grow on trees so giving pocket money will teach the kids to appreciate it.

2 Do parents in your country think it’s important for their children to save money?

Yes, they do. They always encourage the kids to live within their means. They believe if the children save money, they will be more appreciate and use it wisely. When they set aside money, they will prepare better for the future. They may think saving isn’t necessary now since they are still young and lack of experience. Once they grow up, they ‘ll understand that it makes good sense.

Dissatisfied: not content or happy with something. Eg: As she was dissatisfied with results, she applied for revaluation.
Irreplaceable: too special, unusual, or valuable to replace with something or someone else Eg: Mother’s love is irreplaceable.
Brag: say something in a boastful manner. Eg: The old man always brags about his wealth.
Exceptions: something that is not included, or the action of not including something Eg: There’s an exception to every rule.
Entwine: wind or twist together; interweave. Eg: The creepers entwine themselves into the wall.
Point of view: a person’s opinion or particular way of thinking about something Eg: In my point of view, those students must be punished.
Considerable: notably large in size, amount, or extent. Eg: The accident led to considerable damage to the car.
Chores: a routine task, especially a household one. Eg: My mother is an early riser. So she completes all her chores in the morning.
Appreciate: recognize the full worth of. Eg: The Principal appreciated the students for their bravery

This is an estimated band score 9 model for an IELTS writing task 2 direct questions essay. This model essay shows you how to answer each question directly and how to organise the answers into paragraphs.

Some people think that money is one of the most essential factors in promoting happiness. Do you think people can be happy without much money? What other factors contribute towards happiness?

Money is considered by many people to be one of the most important contributing factors towards happiness. In my opinion, it is possible for people to be happy even if they have little money and other aspects of life can play a more vital role in creating happiness.

Although having money brings happiness to a lot of people, it does not necessarily follow that people without money are, therefore, unhappy. Take for example the comparison between developing and developed countries, most Westerners would agree that people in developing countries are happier, enjoy stronger family connections and take more pleasure in the simplicities of life to a greater extent than those in developed countries.

One way that people can gain happiness is through their work. For instance, a doctor doing volunteer work in underdeveloped countries may have very little money but the reward of helping people and doing the job they are good at, brings happiness in itself. In other words, happiness can be found by using skills that people are trained for and through job satisfaction.

Finally, another factor influencing happiness is having supportive and loving people in one’s life. While money may bring the opportunities to enjoy pleasures, few people would enjoy them on their own. Being surrounded by a loving and caring family is considered by most people to be more valuable than any amount of money.

In conclusion, money is not essential for happiness, which can be found through job satisfaction as well as family. If more people strived in life towards true happiness rather than money, the world would be a better place.

Money is thought to be one of the most important reasons to contribute to happiness. While I agree to this in some extent, in my opinion, there are other equally valuable things in life. It is said that ‘money rules the world’, and it’s quite true. Most problems in life can indeed be solved with money. This is especially true in the case of developing countries, where even basic necessities like health, education, etc. are not for free. For example, when the only earning member of a low-income household falls sick or gets diagnosed with a terminal illness, they go through a huge financial burden. This also directly contributes to their unhappiness. In such situations, having money could help in opening different avenues and gaining opportunities that could help in their overall betterment and improved life status. While money is essential to life and could also help in improving different aspects of one’s life, it has to be appreciated that happiness is, but a state of mind. And having money alone cannot guarantee happiness. There are other things to life like love, having close bonds with family/friends, a healthy life and mental well-being, among other things. Hence, I feel, money is indeed essential and helps in improving one’s life and eventually leading to happiness. Yet, there’s more to life than just money, like love and good physical, as well as, mental health.

Hello, Liz. There is something about the causes-solution that is confusing for me. I am mentioning this here because I could not find a model solutions essay on the website. Taking the topic “As the result of tourism and the increasing number of people travelling, there is an growing demand for more flights. What problem does this have on the environment? What measures could be taken to solve the problems?” as an example, will the format of the introduction go like this: paraphrase + brief answer to qs 1 (xyz and cause problems such as ‘abc’ and ‘def’) + brief answer to qs 2 (There are many solutions that can be considered)

The background statement is the same as usual. However, putting too much detail into the thesis statement makes it too long. And using a generic statement without any specific information at all is too vague. You need something between. You can state the two actual causes in the thesis and also briefly state “there are possible solutions” without giving details. So, yes, your thinking is correct. At the end of the day, IELTS is about being logical.

Happiness is a state of mind that encompasses a good wellbeing, and a convenient mental state filled with joy, and much euphoria of gladness. Money is not necessarily a pointer for happiness, but is also a necessity to lead to happy life.

First and foremost, happiness often come when we achieve certain goal or objectives. For example, one could make a decision to graduate from an MBA course which of course would impact his career. Graduating from the MBA could bring much more happiness that having money as this is what the individual is passionate about. When purpose is met, and a certain goal is achieved, happiness is triggered, and of course makes one joyful.

Secondly, people chose happiness when they travel for tourism or meet people from another culture. For example, when I visited the northern part of my country, I had little money on me, but I was so excited that I was seeing people of different culture, tribe, race, and different background. My participation in their most interesting Banku Dance was a joy for me, and I was so glad about it, as I had always dreamt of learning the Banku Dance, and following the Banku culture. Hence this gives me joy.

Moreover, there are a lot of people who have money but they obtained it illegally. This could be money gotten through selling of hard drugs, guns and ammunitions, child trafficking, sex slaves, and bribery for illegal and over estimated government contracts. Of course, these individuals may feel they have a large amount of money to a certain degree, but they may not necessarily be happy, as they would always try to cover up their illegal scheme, and of course when the arms of the law catches up with them, the money made would be taken back, and they would be imprisoned ultimately leading to more sorrow.

However, despite being happy by achieving a particular goal or objectives, career advancement, or socio cultural engagements with other culture and languages, money is still an important factor as these things would need to be paid for before they are achieved.

In conclusion, happiness is not necessarily hinged on having money, as people from low income country who engage in local trades, and carry out certain ambitious projects are always happy when fulfilled, and they glow in admiration of joy, while certain individuals with large money gotten from illegal source may not find happiness as they must keep on covering their tracks. But in all money is still needed to achieve certain objectives or fulfilment that would also lead to happiness.

It is certainly an issue to be writing 400 words for task 2 writing. IELTS essays are designed to be highly focuses, relevant with each sentence being 100% critical to the essay. Money is an important contributor in ones happiness. In my opinion, money is just one factor to happiness and other contributors to happiness are relationships and passion.

Financial abundance is a part of the pie in achieving happiness. Some unfortunate people, who doesn’t have a stable source of income, still manage to be happy when they meet and laugh with friends. Moreover, they could keep a positive outlook when they help people at work as it gives then a sense of purpose. Despite being poor, one can still enjoy life.

One factor that contributes to happiness is valuable relationship. Family time such as eating together home cooked meals rather than at a fast food restaurant allows time to share stories and to feel connected. Relating to loved ones makes one feel listened to and cared for.

Another influencer to happiness is passion for work. At work, such as when helping customers or improving productivity at work by learning a new skill, an excitement is formed inside that helps you carry out throughout the day. Although work can be challenging, if a person finds passion in it, a sense of fulfillment can be gained anytime.

In conclusion, I think people can be happy without much money and this can be achieved through valuable relationships and passion in working.

Many people, mainly elderly, would never miss the evening news. Not only them but also many other adults want to know what is going on in the world. Way too many people are obsessed with news that are bringing raw facts that are important rather than something good, and there would be even more people watching if it did bring joy into their lives.

Understandably, adults need to know what is going on in their town or state before it is too late. News brings a lot of important information from the first hand that is usually important for most citizens. For example, news will alert people about water or electricity shortages, growing interest rates, a criminal that escaped from prison or about a lost child. All of this information is essential for different people. For example, an electricity shortage is targeted to everyone, and some people are able to spend time out of town to wait out the shortage. Growing interest rates are mainly important for people who were thinking about taking a mortgage. Thanks to knowing this ahead of time, they can plan accordingly. Different types of news effects multiple groups of people in many ways. Therefore, news is crucial for most of the population that is 18 and older.

News can be very useful in long term run, however, it can ruin one’s night. Unfortunately, most of the news is targeting the negativity. This is because people consider the bad news more important because they want to be aware and ready. It is easy to understand that people want to know about a snowstorm that will block the roads so that they can get extra groceries or buy special supplements for their pets or livestock and make a plan for what else can go wrong.

Despite the fact that most of the news is negative reporting car accidents, robberies, tragedies and so on, people still choose to watch it. I think that if there were more positive things on the news, people would enjoy watching news and would not watch it because they feel like they need. News could even be a family time and a topic in family discussion if they were more focused on things that make the viewer feel good about the world around them. For example, news should help local farmers and advertise their products while giving a little background about their farm. This would tempt families to buy farm fresh products that are better for them while making a family educational trip to the farm.

In conclusion, news brings useful information to people that is not always pleasant, but could also bring in more positive news. News helps billions of people every day and most of them cannot imagine their life without it. I believe that bad news cannot be left out, but I also think that it should be balanced with good news which would let the viewer enjoy it.

In this day and age, many people believe that money is the key of happiness. In my opinion, I agree that we need money to be happy. It is hard for people to reach happiness in their life if they don’t have enough money to support their lifestyle and basic needs. Firstly, the world has become into a place where money is everything. Basically no one can’t live without money in this modern world. Some words will be repeated. You can’t avoid some repetition. For IELTS, you need to show the skill of paraphrasing which can be with words that you choose. Not all words can or should be changed. Be selective.

Although, it is widely believed that monetary possessions directly relates to the degree of happiness among the masses, I firmly believe, that the other factors in life like trust, compassion, and team spirit equally contribute to an overall happiness quotient of an individual.

It is good to have money and things money can buy. Some people think that financial wealth holds a significant role in happiness. As far as i am concerned, I feel, people can live a happy life even without much money they derive their happiness from other aspects of life rather than just money. Many others factors for instance family,following your passion and a good healthy lifestyle can add to a persons happiness.

Needless to say, money is important to buy basic necessities of life and to rear oneself and their family. It would not be right to say, having too much money is a definite path to joy. Even rich people suffers from depression and anxiety and have many other problems in life. People can be happy in limited amount of money by setting up a limit to their expenses and expectation. As amount of money earned is never enough so, no one can define the amount of money required for happiness. Peoples interest in their work and lifestyle keeps them happy. For example “Discuss both sides and give your opinion” is categorised by many teachers as a Discussion Essay, but it still requires you to give an opinion. You were given a “Two Question Essay” or a “Direct Questions Essay”. Please remember that IELTS do not categorised essays – teachers do. So, teachers might have different names for different essays. You were required to give the causes for one question and then to present your opinion about whether it is good or bad for the other question. Just follow the instructions and you can’t go wrong.

This is considered by some people that one of the most main elements of achieving happiness is finance, however, in my opinion, I believe that individuals can get totally happy regardless of being rich.

People can be happy without being rich, in other words, the happy feeling comes from different reasons which are not related with having money, for instance, I am a junior graphic designer, who earn a basic salary, and there is almost no money in my bank account, sometimes I got struggle financially because I can not afford my travel fees, but I still enjoy my life, I love my work and the other goals I have achieved, even when I making food or hold a cup of hot chocolate can totally make me happy and satisfy. People can be happy not only because of financial satisfy, but there are also always other elements for people to gain happiness

Individuals also achieve happiness through achievements, job satisfaction, doing sports, or even breath fresh air. A Havard report says that the people who enjoy doing exercise by sports or join into gym are feeling happier than the people who never do any physical exercise, however, doing exercise by playing sports or join in a gym has no relationship with having money, a middle school student can totally achieve this happiness without spending a dollar. A newspaper also mentions that job satisfaction is one of the main factors which contributes towards happiness, indeed, people who gain achievements through overcome job tasks can also achieve happiness.

In conclusion, for some people, money is truly one of the keys that makes people happy, however, happy people like me who is poor but still enjoy life through other things. The first line of model essay has word many people where as the question has some people. Can some people be paraphrased as many people ? Can it be paraphrased as few people ? Thanks Kamal

The word “few” people means a very small number of people. It is completely inappropriate to use.

In my opinion, a poorer person can be happier than a wealthy one. There are also various other factors that can bring happiness to people” also is it okay to include sayings like “money is the root of all evil” to stress on how money would not bring happiness to some??

Do not learn phrases. Each sentence should be created uniquely by yourself.

why do you always deter others from learning the sentences other than yours? Learning to use sentences from your model answers is acceptable while from other sources are not and so-called “memorizing”. For a foreigner who wanna make their english more native, coping and imitating is the first step because they don’t have any own languages that are shining enough to get a decent score.

IT is fine to use ideas and learn vocabulary, but everything you write must be your own way. This is a language test and you are being scored on your ability to create sentences of your own. You should not memorise my sentences or anyone else’s sentences.

Hi Liz, Is it okay to provide examples for both BP1 and BP2?I am a little bit confused because I had attended an IELTS Writing class. The trainer said we can only give one example for the whole writing 2 essay. Is she correct or is it possible to have an example for both BP! and BP2?Please enlighten me on this. Thank you, Rose

There is no such rule in IELTS. Absolutely no such rule at all. I would limit examples to one per body paragraph – not because it is a rule, but because that is sensible. You can have a maximum of three body paragraphs – again, not as a rule, but as a sensible way to meet the requirements of the higher band scores.

Art is part of cultural identity. It is how a country expresses itself and can also reflect the history of the country as well. Art from World War I is often analysed because it shows the painters experience of the war. Art is also a skill that should be respected and supported. Art galleries attract tourists and add to the tourist trade which in turn boosts economy. Just take a look online – google the pros and cons of supporting the arts. Please note the different between art and the arts.

Firstly, there are two type of countries developing and developed countries. People in developing nations have more happier life than masses in developed terrotries . they live a happier life as they has time to spend with families and their children.

You need to understand that it is teachers who divide the essays into different types. It is a way of teaching. Some direct questions require opinions, some do not. All you need to do is answer the direct question(s) given. For example: Why is happiness different for different people? What factors contribute toward happiness? This is a direct question essay with two questions to answer. An opinion essay is an essay that only asks “Do you agree or disagree” / “To what extent do you agree or disagree”. But always remember, your aim is just to follow instructions. Each teacher teaches the essays differently and divides the essay types differently.

Hi Liz, I noticed you’ve used “having” a few times in this essay. There are certain words that I use involuntarily in my sentences. Like, “kind of, involves, constant”. Would multiple use of such words affect my score? I have my IELTS LRW tomorrow 🙂 Thank you Liz.

Paraphrasing does not mean changing words all the time. Paraphrasing means deciding when to keep words the same and when to change them. Not all words need to be changed.

Hello Liz! I have given IELTS thrice . I have been able to score 8 in speaking , reading and listening. But, my score in writing has been 6.5 consistently. I have tried my best to give examples and improve vocabulary. I have analysed myself, could it be because of writing task 1 ? Because I did not make comparisons. Please advice as it has become frustrating for me.

Giving examples will not increase your score in writing task 2 – examples are optional. So, certainly you should review it and avoid problems, but the biggest issue will be your task 2.

In Thesis statement we always mention three points which are connecting to question, using for example I my opinion and more importantly our opinion. why did not say your opinion in the thesis statement? you just implied that there are other aspects.

Don’t make your thesis too long. Your thesis contains the answer and the body paragraphs contain the details. However, there is no right and wrong. If you do add a bit of detail to your thesis it is ok.

Hello Liz, Sometimes the IELTS task 2 questions consist of about 3 questions. In this case, I donnot know which one to start first, structure, places of them in bodies and so on. Could please make it easy for me? Thanks in advance.

You follow a logical order and answer each question in one body paragraph. Keep organisation simple and language complex.

My name is Jose and I took the IELTS test examination 3 times. My results in writing were as follow 6,6.5, and 6. I was quite shock when I got my last result, as for my third attempt I studied harder and I knew more vocabulary. As result, I checked the IELTS criteria and I found out for the first time that I was not using complex and compound sentences in my essays! I believe other students are making the same mistakes as well. Many people on the internet advice to check old essays in order to imitate them. However, if you do not know the theory behind each sentence construction, it is very hard to imbibe the knowledge. It would be very beneficial for the community if you emphasize this point in one of your videos.

You can choose agree, disagree or a partial opinion. You are not being marked on your choice.

I need your help.

I have done IELTS for the 3rd time, after attending to an instructor for 3 months period. Unfortunately this time I got the worst result which is 6 in Writing.

Last 2 times I got 6.5 in writing. This time even I felt confidence on my writing I couldn’t believe how it went further down.

It was about buying second hand products, what are the reasons and whether it has negative or positive impact.

I wrote 2 paragraphs explaining 2 reasons and 3rd explaining the impact. What I argued is it has negative impact. What I could think which affected my score is about a phrase I used in conclusion “To put in a nutshell, I pen down saying that”. I saw this clause in a model essay published in a website.

I could not think what went wrong, was it my ideas or was it my inappropriate word choice.

It is a direct question essay which requires your opinion. You must state if you think it is positive or not and explain your point of view.

How to diffrenciate between direct question and opinion question while both of them are asking ( why do you think ? )

An opinion essay is categorised by the fact that the only question is “do you agree or disagree?”. The direct question essay contains two or more questions to answer. However, both require an opinion. The catgorises are mainly used by teachers in order to teach – so don’t worry so much. Just follow the instructions.

I have been struggling with my essays for a while, and I was wondering if you can give me a hand by pointing mistakes or odd writing style.

While money comes as number one priority for some people, other think that it is not of that importance. Money can but many materialistic assets , but it falls behind when it comes to intangible relations. Personally, I do not think what wealth can buy happiness.

Firstly, Money has taken over our lives significantly. For example, some are convinced that it is better to cry in a luxurious car such as BMW rather than on your foot, trying to exaggerate the importance of money, but they are oblivious to the truth if being sad and maybe devastated in both cases. For sure money is important but not such an extent. It can buy a breathtaking house with stunning views, but with neither a family nor children.

Secondly, family ties play an important role in drawing a smile on the one’s face. For instance, whenever I feel down, I check old photos with my family, and a torrent of rekindled memories come across my mind. while many families work their fingers to the bone, trying to achieve a satisfactory amount of money monthly, they forget to give their children an adequate amount of care and love. A justification for this social transformation can be related to the capitalist greedy world that we live in.

Thirdly, religion can be a source of stability during the journey of life. when people face a bitter hardship, religion is this thing that bring them back on their feet. This spiritual relation works as the guardian guide, bringing peace which in turn brings happiness.

In conclusion, it always feels great to have a six digit bank account, but this will bring neither satisfaction nor joy to the life. In my opinion, we need to be more focused on being humans rather than our banks.

Secondly, I don’t think I understand the difference between Direct Essays and Cause-Solution ones. I mean, isn’t every Cause-Solution essay fundamentally a Direct one? ( and not vice versa of course)

Sure. It is still a direct question. However, the label of “Direct Question Essay” refers to essays which don’t fall into the other categories and generally just ask questions such as “What is happiness?” “Why is it difficult to define?”.

Thanks for your comment. In writing task 2, you must follow the instructions very carefully and your score will depend on you doing that. If the instructions ask for your opinion, you MUST give it clearly. Writing “It is believed that…” does not show your personal opinion. It states what is thought by others. Therefore, in an opinion essay, you MUST use language which clearly gives your point of view, such as “I think” or “In my opinion”. It is a direct questions essay which uses one question from the cause type essay and one question from the opinion type essay. So, it’s a combination essay requiring you to answer each question directly.

We use plurals. It’s easier to refer to everyone in the plural: accountants will never know that singing brings them …”

The last sentence of the third paragraph of body body paragraphs should be modified to: “being surrounded by a loving and caring family is considered to ‘be’ more valuable than any amount of money”. Yes. It is flexible and good for a high score. Using it always at the start of a sentence is mechanical which is a characteristic of band score 6. Liz

I was having three things to ask regarding grammar. 1 ) Can we use second conditional sentence of imagination in past tense i.e. referring to yesterday incident of discussion She told “If you weren’t married , I would purpose you” 2 ) Can we use the sentence of compulsion “Have to” in continuous tone i.e. I am having to do this. 3 ) Can we say the repent in opposite way which has not happened ” If you had not gone , you would have not got the chance to speak” while actually one has gone means the work has been attended still can we imagine in “Not” with 3rd conditional sentence

You use examples from your own experience about the world, not your own experience about your personal life. You should present examples in a way suitable for essay writing which doesn’t include stories about yourself or people you know. It should be your experience of the world. All the best Liz

Hi, Liz! I am confused about the usage of “take for example”. I learned “take sth for example” but it seems that you use “take for example sth”(take for example the comparison …). Are both usages the same? Besides, in concluding paragraph, I guess the word “though”( happiness can be found though job satisfaction …) should be “through”. Thanks.

Why You Should Be Tracking Customer Surplus Value

This key metric can help you measure customer loyalty.

How much value are your customers getting from your products? Net Promoter Scores are one tool to answer that question but the authors offer another: Customer Surplus Value. The idea, drawn from economics, is to ask customers how much money they’d need to be given to give up your product for a period of time. The more money it would take for them to accept, the more valuable the product. An experiment at LinkedIn shows how this measure complements NPS scores as a way of measuring customer satisfaction.

In the realm of customer feedback metrics, few have garnered as much attention and adoption as the Net Promoter Score (NPS). Introduced two decades ago by Frederick Reichheld in his seminal Harvard Business Review article, “The One Number You Need to Grow,” NPS emerged as a revolutionary approach to capturing and predicting company growth. Heralded for its simplicity — a single question that gauges the likelihood of customers to recommend a product or service to others — it became an instrumental tool for businesses to measure customer feedback. Companies across sectors and regions adopted the metric, finding correlations between high NPS scores and enhanced profitability, retention, and growth.

HOUSTON – KPRC 2 is working to get residents the real answers and resources they need as we navigate storm recovery options, with more impactful weather expected to hit our area this upcoming hurricane season.

What questions do you have about the 2024 hurricane season?

Most recently, the Houston area has seen some catastrophic weather which began on May 16 with the deadly Derecho that rocked parts of the Houston area, leaving four people dead.

Since then, we’ve seen heavy rains, thunderstorms, hail, and damaging straight-line winds across our area, adding insult to injury for those of us attempting to begin repairs and salvaging what we have left.

After speaking to dozens of residents in our area, KPRC 2 heard multiple times that they felt the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) wasn’t visible in their area, or that they did not have direct access or understanding of FEMA’s plan of action in our state.

KPRC 2 Digital Reporter Moriah Ballard sat down with FEMA representative Lenisha Smith who answered all of our questions, and questions sent in by our Click2Houston audience.

Below is a transcript of the Q&A:

Benefits of fema programs.

MORIAH: Explain to us what benefits renters and homeowners can have from these programs with your new expanded coverage.

LENISHA SMITH: If you’re a renter or if you’re a homeowner, you may be able to apply for FEMA assistance or receive financial assistance for either housing repairs or repairs to your personal property. If you have repairs or damages to your your primary car or your primary vehicle, we’re able to provide you with some financial assistance to help you with that. I want to encourage all survivors. If you’re a renter, a homeowner, make sure you’re putting in those applications as soon as possible. Even if you have a renter’s insurance, homeowner’s insurance, you may still be eligible for some FEMA assistance. So start working on putting in those applications as soon as possible.

Keeping documents

MORIAH: How important is it for homeowners and renters to keep their receipts during times like this?

LENISHA SMITH: It’s very important because a lot of the times, we will need those documents to work through your FEMA application when you apply. I highly recommend for anyone, even if they haven’t applied yet and you’ve started making repairs to your home and then you think, ‘Oh, hey, maybe I do need to apply for FEMA assistance,’ making sure you’re keeping track of all that documentation and receipts that you’ve already had.

Reasons people get denied for FEMA assistance

MORIAH: We know some people get denied for FEMA. What is the number one reason people get denied?

LENISHA SMITH: I would say there would be various reasons. Sometimes it can be as small as there was a typo in your Social Security number. So, just making sure that you’re going through when you’re filling out the application and just double-checking all of your answers and all of the documents that you put in. I highly recommend if survivors have trouble with working through the application process, if they have any questions, to come into one of our disaster recovery centers right now, we have seven of them, and speak with a FEMA representative face to face. And they’ll be able to help you work through that application process so it’s a lot easier for you.

How to navigate FEMA for the upcoming hurricane season

MORIAH: Now, do you have any income barriers here or insurance barriers that might come into play? I know sometimes people are worried if they pay the deductible on their homeowner’s insurance, then that’s when FEMA steps in. Kind of explain some barriers that you guys have.

LENISHA SMITH: We will need your annual income or household income when you do apply. But if you do have a deductible to your insurance, you may be eligible for FEMA, to get some assistance with paying that. So again, just communicating your unique circumstances and your needs at the time.

Disaster Recovery Centers in SE Texas

MORIAH: Now tell us about this Disaster Recovery Center. What are you guys offering here?

LENISHA SMITH: When survivors come into the disaster recovery centers at the various locations, we may have various other agencies located at the center as well. Sometimes you’ll find representatives from the Small Business Administration, and they offer low-interest disaster loans, if that’s another option that you may need to go through. But when you come in, you can sit down with a FEMA representative and they’ll be able to help you start with that initial application process. If you’ve already put in your application and you need to come in and submit some documents, or if you just have some questions, you can also come in and speak with us about those as well.

MORIAH: Are you structured on a first come, first served basis, or how is the money sent by FEMA divvied up amongst, you know, residents in the area?

LENISHA SMITH: It’s not divvied up like that. So what I like to tell people is, help us help you. The quicker that we have all of the documentation that we need to process your application, then the quicker you’ll be able to get assistance. So keep in constant communication with us. Come into a disaster recovery center. Ask your questions. If you see that your application is pending, come in and double check and see what else we may need from you.

You’ll also receive a determination letter from FEMA which will explain what we may need if we need further documentation to keep processing your application or if you’ve been deemed eligible or ineligible for assistance. If you are deemed eligible, it’ll have that amount on that determination letter as well.

When does FEMA step in?

MORIAH: Now, what kind of declaration needs to be made in Texas in order for FEMA to step in?

LENISHA SMITH: For there to be a declared disaster in your area, there needs to be a request that’s submitted to the government from the governor to the president, and it needs to be a federally declared disaster declaration. And that is when FEMA will be able to step in and start providing assistance to survivors who were affected by that disaster.

MORIAH: Do you have maybe a definition of what they consider a disaster, or when does it become a federal disaster?

LENISHA SMITH: It’s a case-by-case basis. Again, it has to come from the governor. It starts with the state. They have to be able to submit that request for federal assistance. So when you come to a disaster recovery center like I said before, you can sit down with a FEMA representative, you can sit down with a representative from the Small Business Administration and another one of our DCS.

We had some representatives from the Red Cross, and they were there providing assistance to survivors who were coming in and letting them know what their needs were. And so sometimes there can be various different organizations located at the center. Sometimes we’ll have some mental health assistance that are at the center or legal assistance that’s available at the centers as well. So just coming in and and letting us know what your needs are, and then we’ll be able to direct you from there.

Debunking FEMA myths

MORIAH: So there’s a lot of myths that go around with residents. A lot of people think that it rains, and FEMA is supposed to show up the next day. Kind of debunk some of the things that you guys have heard through social media, or the residents just kind of talking about you guys. Debunk some of those myths for us about what FEMA does and what they don’t do.

LENISHA SMITH: Of course. And, I know this happens all the time, especially with social media. But for there to be FEMA assistance, specifically with individual assistance and our public assistance programs, there needs to be a federally declared disaster. So that request needs to come from the governor to the president. It needs to get approved by the president, and then FEMA will be able to get on the ground and start assisting people with their disaster recovery.

Another myth that I’ve heard, is that when you do have insurance, you’re not going to be eligible to apply for FEMA assistance. And that’s not true. If you have underinsured needs, if you’re a renter, if you’re a homeowner and you have insurance, you can still apply through FEMA and you still may be eligible to receive some assistance.

Food assistance

MORIAH: When it comes to food recovery, there are people living paycheck to paycheck in some instances. I know that sometimes you guys want them to pay upfront and then you’ll reimburse them. Is that what the case has been, or how can the person living paycheck to paycheck get immediate food assistance if they need something like today?

LENISHA SMITH: If they apply through FEMA, and let us know that they have a serious need, they may be able to receive, Serious Needs Assistance. So that’s funding they’ll be able to get to them quicker. Once we work through that process, if they have that immediate need or like a serious need for life-saving and life-sustaining, products like breastfeeding materials, baby food, water, things like that, or gas for transportation. If you have that serious need, then you may be eligible for that.

FEMA’s reimbursement plan

MORIAH: How does the reimbursement kind of work?

If I say I’m staying at my friend’s house and she asked me for $50 for rent because she let me live with her for two weeks. Do you guys offer services for that? Or maybe I had to change my child’s childcare provider, and I have to go across town to drop them off at a babysitter. How do you guys handle, like, those real-life kind of situations?

LENISHA SMITH: We do have a program called, Displacement Assistance. So this is a new program. I don’t know if you’ve heard earlier this year, we announced some huge updates to our individual assistance program which we created two new benefits.

One was the Serious Needs Assistance program, which I spoke about earlier. This one is called Displacement Assistance. So it gives survivors that flexibility to decide what the best housing option for them. So like you said, if they’re staying with their friend because their home was damaged and they need to give their friend $50 for utilities, they can use Displacement Assistance for those needs. If they’re staying with someone and they want to help out with groceries. They can use that funding for that. So it just gives them the flexibility, whether they want to stay in a hotel, whether they want to stay with their friend, whether they want to stay at an Airbnb. It gives them the freedom to choose what’s the best option for them.

MORIAH: And in those cases, say that I go to a hotel and I foot the bill. Do I have to wait for the reimbursement that you guys offered upfront? Or do I have to fill out a form and kind of wait six months and then you pay me the $150, $200?

LENISHA SMITH: No. That’s why I want to encourage people to make sure that they’re communicating to FEMA what their unique circumstances are, if they’re staying with their friend, if they’ve been in a hotel for the last week and they’ve been paying for their room, let us know what that is. So we’ll be able to route you to the right program to get you the right assistance for exactly what you need.

Business impacted during the storm?

MORIAH: So we’re talking about homes mostly, but what about your business? What if your business didn’t have any damage but let’s say you didn’t get customers in maybe two weeks? Is there anything that FEMA can do for small businesses in those kind of situations?

LENISHA SMITH: So that’s when we would route folks through the Small Business Administration, where they are able to offer assistance to businesses who have been affected by the disaster. They’re able to offer them with low-interest disaster loans as well.

How can FEMA help pets?

MORIAH: A lot of people here care about their pets. Share a little bit about how you can help with the pet situation. Can you all help board pets? How can FEMA step in to help the animals in the area?

LENISHA SMITH: I know for the Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program, which has now been activated for, I believe, a few of the 19 designated counties, if you do have a pet and that pet needs to come with you to the hotel, you’ll be eligible to take that pet with them or will pay for your pet to stay with you while you’re in that program, located in one of the participating hotels.

So if you’re a renter or if you’re a homeowner, you may be able to apply for FEMA assistance or receive financial assistance for either housing repairs or repairs to your personal property. If you have repairs or damages to your, your primary car or your primary vehicle, when we are able to provide you with some financial assistance to help you with that. I want to encourage all survivors, if you’re a renter or a homeowner, make sure you’re putting in those applications as soon as possible. Even if you have a renter’s insurance, homeowner’s insurance, you may still be eligible for some FEMA assistance. So start working on putting in those applications as soon as possible.

Newly expanded programs

MORIAH: If you could just tell us a little bit about what is the difference between the old programs and the new programs. What are like the key points that you guys have changed and expanded for the new disaster?

LENISHA SMITH: I wouldn’t say like old programs versus new programs because it’s just the individual assistance program. But we’ve expanded some of the programs that we already have, and we’ve created two new programs. So the two new programs is Serious Needs Assistance, where survivors will be able to receive funds for any of their serious needs, and then also for Displacement Assistance, which gives survivors that flexibility to stay where they want to stay. If they want to stay in a hotel, they’re staying with their friend, a family member or if they want to go to an Airbnb. It gives them, the option to choose what’s what works best for them. We’ve also expanded some of our habitability, for other programs that we’ve had. For example, I think the biggest change is previously, survivors would have to work through the process and apply for a small business disaster loan to become eligible, or to be referred back to FEMA to see what they would be eligible for. We’ve now removed that requirement so survivors no longer have to apply, or have to submit an application to the Small Business Administration, to work through the FEMA application process.

I know we saw a lot of reluctance with that from survivors because they hear Small Business administration and think, ‘I’m not a business. I don’t own a business. Why do I have to apply for a loan? I just need assistance or FEMA.’ So we’ve removed that, to help them work through the application process easier. But we also still work very closely with the Small Business Administration. They are our close partners. They’re usually located in our Disaster Recovery Centers. So if survivors do see that they need to apply for a low-interest disaster loan, they can still come to the Disaster Recovery Centers and work through that process with us.

PHOTOJOURNALIST JEOVANY LUNA: The May 16 storm happened, another storm happened yesterday. Say you were affected on both. Do you have to do a double application? Or is there only one application for the two disasters?

LENISHA SMITH: So if you’re affected by multiple storms it’s going to still be one application because it’s one disaster declaration. Now if there’s a separate disaster declaration then that’s when you have to submit a separate application to FEMA. But, the incident date for this declaration is still open. So the ongoing storms and the ongoing severe weather that we are experiencing, if you receive any damage from that, you’ll still be eligible to apply for FEMA assistance. And if you have received additional damages from a separate storm and you already have your application in with FEMA, again, call FEMA. Come to the Disaster Recovery Center and communicate that you have experienced additional damages so they can add that to your existing application.

PHOTOJOURNALIST JEOVANY LUNA: What would happen if we do another application? Would it disrupt your computer system?

LENISHA SMITH: It’ll just get flagged if you put in another application and that will be denied because it’ll already know that the system has located. You already have, an existing application with us.

Language barriers, citizenship status

PHOTOJOURNALIST JEOVANY LUNA: Do you have a Spanish speaker or other languages? You know, language can be a barrier.

LENISHA SMITH: If you are Spanish-speaking and you need an interpreter or you need to speak with someone who also speaks Spanish, you can come to our Disaster Recovery Centers. Most of our disaster recovery centers, especially the one that I had that we are currently at, there are two Spanish speakers to help you work through the application process. Also, when you call the FEMA helpline, which is 1(800) 621-3362, Spanish speakers just need to press the #2, and they’ll be directed to a Spanish speaker to help them work through the application process.

PHOTOJOURNALIST JEOVANY LUNA: Do you ask for someone’s legal status?

LENISHA SMITH: We do ask for the appropriate documentation that shows that you are a qualified citizen or qualified non-citizen. So, making sure you bring all of the documentation that you do have to prove your citizenship is going to be needed for a FEMA application. If there is someone in your household who has the appropriate documentation, they can submit the application, and then the other household members can be listed under that application to receive assistance as well.

So the first one is on Click2Houston.com from SLC . They say will FEMA provide any financial compensation or resources for those of us that missed work or hours due to power outages? I am on a very tight income, as many of us are, and have no idea how I’ll be able to financially recover from missing several days of work without pay.

LENISHA SMITH: If they’re experiencing unemployment due to the disaster, Disaster Unemployment Assistance has been turned on but that’s offered through the state. So I can give you the number. It’s the Texas Workforce Commission, and it’s (800) 939-6631. And that’s open between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Or they can go online as well to submit an application so they can get that assistance if they’re currently experiencing unemployment.

MORIAH: Another question into our newsroom is from The_Elephant_In_The_Room. That’s their username. They’re asking where can disabled and homebound people apply, and how soon should we expect the funds realistically to help.

LENISHA SMITH: So they can if they have the ability to come in or transportation, or if they have someone to help them, come into a Disaster Recovery Center, they are more than free to do that. Or they can apply at home. They can call the FEMA helpline number, which is 1-800-621-3362, or they can go online at disasterassistance.gov and put in their application there. Again, I like to encourage people and to tell people, help us help you.

We’re going to work through the process as fast as we can as long as we have all the documentation that we need to work through that process. So communicating with us or asking your questions upfront and saying, What exactly do I need? What documentation do you need? What receipts do you need? What estimates do you need from me? And we’ll let you know all of that so you can submit that all and you know as quickly as possible so we can work through that process for you.

Trump’s hush money guilty verdict is only going to make him more dangerous

What has happened in the course of the Trump hush money trial is absolutely mind-bending, norms-crushing stuff. On Thursday, a jury found former President Donald Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records. But while there was no way to anticipate this particular verdict, there is plenty about the aftermath of this trial that we all knew, long before a trial even started. And that has everything to do with Trump's habit of twisting the truth and facts for his own political gain.

Even with the unprecedented nature of this trial, Trump's potential next move is a relatively easy guess.

This is true even though this trial was marked by a number of “firsts,” including its being the first time a U.S. president has ever been tried on criminal charges and the first time a major-party candidate has sat for a criminal trial. The closest America has ever come to this before was with Richard Nixon — although Nixon resigned because other Republicans told him he’d lost the confidence of his fellow party members. In contrast, we've seen very few Republicans stand up to Trump during his two impeachments, during his Jan. 6 insurrection or during his third run at the White House.

Yet even with the unprecedented nature of this trial, Trump's potential next move is a relatively easy guess.

On the night before the closing arguments, Trump “truthed” : “Can you imagine, a President of the United States, who got more votes than any sitting President in the history of our Country, and who is also the Republican Nominee for President in the upcoming 2024 Election, and leading in all polls against the Democrat Nominee, Joe Biden, is tomorrow going before a Corrupt and Conflicted Democrat Appointed, Acting New York Judge, on a FAKE & MADE UP CASE by a Soros backed failed D.A., and the Judge himself, to see whether or not he will become a common criminal?”

Moments after the jury began deliberating, Trump took to his social media platform again, firing off a series of misleading and outright false claims, including the assertion: “I don’t even know what the charges are in this rigged case — I am entitled to specificity just like anyone else. There is no crime!” Notably, Trump typed this even as, as MSNBC’s Hayes Brown pointed out , the jury sat for more than an hour while Judge Juan Merchan provided detailed instructions about what jury deliberations entail. That post was just one of many in which Trump refuted the validity of any pending guilty verdict.

Trump, a self-proclaimed wannabe autocrat , has made his own criminal case an attack on the rule of law from the start. It is incredibly dangerous to have someone who is supported by a significant percentage of the American people focus on degrading an important American norm. When Trump calls the justice system “corrupt” and “conflicted,” he undermines one of the central tenets of our rule of law: the right to a fair trial. This explains why Trump effectively attempted to undermine a verdict before it was even passed down. He has sought to damage the institution of our justice system from the start. And he has succeeded in chipping away at its perceived legitimacy, long before any verdict was handed down.

A lot of Trump watchers believe that Trump’s main goal in running for president was to afford himself some legal protection. According to Republican Will Hurd , Trump is running for president "because he’s trying to stay out of jail." Trump announced he was running for president ridiculously early, a week after his party underperformed in the midterms. Since then, he has been laser-focused on trying to merge his status as a defendant with his status as a candidate — creating a scenario in which Trump is pitting himself against the Justice Department and the rule of law.

Perhaps even more significantly, running for president presented an opportunity to have GOP donors pay his legal bills. Which they did, to the tune of $100 million .

Since mid-April, Trump has been sitting in a criminal court listening to everyone from adult film star Stormy Daniels to National Enquirer owner David Pecker testify about their damning experiences with Trump. At times, it seemed as if candidate Trump and his team didn’t help defendant Trump much during the trial. At one point, Trump lawyer Susan Necheles attacked Daniels, saying, “You have a lot of experience making phony stories about sex.” This comment opened the door for Daniels to testify about the sexual relationship she says she had with the Republican front-runner, an unforced error that could have been avoided. A former federal prosecutor, Jim Walden, told The Washington Post , “Whatever else Donald Trump may be — a great businessman, a great reality TV show host, a great politician — he’s a dumb lawyer.”

So what happens now? Now that we have a verdict in the case, there’s a good chance Trump will play it as being what he expected, and even wanted. We should expect him to go scorched-earth, because he so often does. We know he will try to weaponize this verdict and craft it into an assault on the rule of law, on the judge and the jury and on New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

No matter what the outcome, Trump was always going to try to use candidate Trump to help defendant Trump. And any verdict was destined to be molded into his branded narrative of persecution, witch hunts and a fight against the political system. Of that we can be certain.

With Donald J. Trump’s unprecedented felony conviction on Thursday, what has long been a remote and abstract concept could move closer to a stunning reality: a former president of the United States behind bars.

But that wouldn’t happen fast.

A jury in Manhattan convicted Mr. Trump of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, a crime that under New York State law carries a possible sentence that ranges from probation to four years in prison.

But Mr. Trump is no ordinary defendant. And while most experts think a prison sentence is unlikely, the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, has made it known that he takes white-collar crime seriously. The judge set sentencing for July 11.

The Trump Manhattan Criminal Verdict, Count By Count

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

If Justice Merchan hands down a punishment that lands the former president behind bars — what is known as a custodial sentence — Mr. Trump would be no ordinary prisoner.

That’s because the United States Secret Service is required by law to protect former presidents around the clock, which means its agents would have to protect Mr. Trump inside a prison if he was sentenced to serve time.

Even before the trial’s opening statements, the Secret Service was in some measure planning for the extraordinary possibility of a former president’s incarceration. In the days before the trial began in April, prosecutors asked Justice Merchan to remind Mr. Trump that attacks on witnesses and jurors could land him in jail even before a verdict was rendered.

Shortly thereafter, officials with federal, state and city agencies had an impromptu meeting about how to handle the situation, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

That behind-the-scenes conversation — involving officials from the Secret Service and other relevant law enforcement agencies — focused only on how to move and protect Mr. Trump if the judge were to order him briefly jailed for contempt in a courthouse holding cell before or during the trial, the people said.

The far more substantial challenge — how to safely incarcerate a former president if he were to be sentenced to prison — has yet to be addressed directly, according to interviews with some of a dozen current and former city, state and federal officials.

That’s at least in part because a drawn-out and hard-fought series of appeals, possibly all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, would be almost a certainty. That would most likely delay Mr. Trump’s serving any sentence for months, if not longer, said several of the people, who like other experts have suggested that a prison sentence is unlikely.

Justice Merchan, whom Mr. Trump has continually attacked as “biased” and “corrupt,” could well decide to sentence Mr. Trump to probation rather than prison time.

That would raise the bizarre possibility of the former — and possibly future — commander in chief reporting regularly to a civil servant at the city’s Probation Department.

Mr. Trump would have to follow the probation officer’s instructions and answer questions about his work and personal life until the term of probation ended. He would also be barred from associating with disreputable people, and if he committed any additional crimes, he could be jailed immediately.

Incarceration would present a far greater challenge, especially because Mr. Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee for president. “Obviously, it’s uncharted territory,” Martin F. Horn, who has worked at the highest levels of New York’s and Pennsylvania’s state prison agencies and served as commissioner of New York City’s correction and probation departments, has said. “Certainly no state prison system has had to deal with this before, and no federal prison has had to either.”

Steven Cheung, the communications director for Mr. Trump’s campaign, has said that the case against the former president was “so spurious and so weak” that other prosecutors had refused to bring it, and called it “an unprecedented partisan witch hunt.”

“That the Democrat fever dream of incarcerating the nominee of the Republican Party has reached this level exposes their Stalinist roots and displays their utter contempt for American democracy,” he said.

Protecting Mr. Trump in a prison environment would involve keeping him separate from other inmates, as well as screening his food and other personal items, officials said. If he were to be imprisoned, a detail of agents would work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rotating in and out of the facility, several officials said. While firearms are strictly prohibited in prisons, the agents would, most likely, nonetheless be armed.

Former corrections officials said there were several New York state prisons and city jails that have been closed or partly closed, leaving large sections of their facilities empty. One of those buildings could serve to incarcerate the former president and accommodate his Secret Service protective detail.

Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, declined in a statement to discuss specific “protective operations.” But he has emphasized that federal law requires Secret Service agents to protect former presidents, adding that they use state-of-the-art technology, intelligence and tactics to do so.

Thomas J. Mailey, a spokesman for New York State’s prison agency, has said that his department could not speculate about how it would treat someone who has not yet been sentenced, but that it has a system “to assess and provide for individuals’ medical, mental health and security needs.” Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the New York City jails agency, recently said only that “the department would find appropriate housing” for the former president.

While each count carries the possibility of up to four years in prison, Justice Merchan would most likely order any sentence to run concurrently, meaning Mr. Trump would serve prison time on each of the counts simultaneously. Under normal circumstances, any sentence of one year or less would generally be served on New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, home to the Department of Correction’s seven jails. (That’s where Mr. Trump’s former chief financial officer, Allen H. Weisselberg, 76, is serving his second five-month sentence for perjury .)

Any sentence of more than a year would generally be served in one of the 44 prisons run by New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

And what if Mr. Trump is elected president in November? He could not pardon himself because the prosecution was brought by New York State, not the federal government. But it is unclear what would happen if he were sentenced to a prison term and appellate courts upheld his conviction while he was in office.

NEW YORK — Former President Donald Trump has been found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, a historic verdict as Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, campaigns again for the White House.

This is the first time a former or sitting U.S. president has been convicted of criminal charges.

On Thursday, 12 New York jurors said they unanimously agreed that Trump falsified business records to conceal a $130,000 hush money payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels to influence the 2016 contest.

The decision came after about a day and a half of deliberations.

As the verdicts were read, Trump remained silent and still. But the former president spoke to reporters outside the courtroom, calling the trial a "rigged, disgraceful trial" and saying that the "real verdict" will be rendered on Election Day.

Trump's legal team signaled it would appeal the conviction.

New York Judge Juan Merchan set sentencing for July 11 — just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention. Trump faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison, but as a first-time, white-collar offender, no prison time is necessary, and he could receive probation instead.

The jury heard from 22 witnesses during about four weeks of testimony in Manhattan’s criminal court. Jurors also weighed other evidence — mostly documents like phone records, invoices and checks to Michael Cohen, Trump’s once loyal “fixer,” who paid Daniels to keep her story of an alleged affair with the former president quiet.

The facts of the payments and invoices labeled as legal services were not in dispute. What prosecutors needed to prove was that Trump falsified the records in order to further another crime — in this case, violating the New York election law that makes it a crime for “any two or more persons [to] conspire to promote or prevent the election of any person to a public office by unlawful means.” The jurors were able to choose whether those unlawful means were violating the Federal Election Campaign Act, falsifying tax returns or falsifying other business records.

Trump’s defense focused intently on the credibility of Cohen and argued that influencing an election is not illegal.

The verdict came more than a year after a grand jury indicted Trump on March 30, 2023, marking the first time a former or sitting president faced criminal charges.

Republicans dismissed the indictment as an overreach of power by Democratic District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who had brought the charges. On Thursday, following the conviction, Republican elected officials quickly rallied around Trump again.

At a news conference Thursday evening, Bragg said: "While this defendant may be unlike any other in American history, we arrived at this trial — and ultimately today at this verdict — in the same manner as every other case that comes through the courtroom doors: by following the facts and the law, and doing so without fear or favor."

What the jury heard

In August 2015, two months after Trump announced his 2016 presidential bid, David Pecker, then the publisher of the National Enquirer tabloid, met with Trump and Cohen at Trump Tower, according to testimony from Pecker and Cohen.

At that meeting, Pecker testified, it was agreed that he would be the “eyes and ears” of the Trump campaign. His job was to look out for negative stories from women that he could “take off the marketplace” by buying up the rights to the stories but never publishing them.

The plan, as Pecker outlined it, was that he would suppress these stories and at the same time publish negative stories about Trump’s opponents. Some of these stories, Pecker said, were sent to Trump and Cohen for approval prior to publication.

Over the next year, Pecker said, he carried out this role. His testimony was corroborated by Keith Davidson, an attorney who represented both Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal. In about June 2016, McDougal considered going public with her story of a yearlong affair with Trump. But Pecker bought the rights to that story, with the expectation that he would be reimbursed by Trump. That never happened.

In early October 2016, according to the testimony of former Trump communications aide Hope Hicks, the campaign was rocked by the release of the Access Hollywood tape, where Trump could be heard boasting, “When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the p****.”

The next day, according to Pecker, Cohen and Davidson, Daniels threatened to go public with accusations that she'd had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006 in a Lake Tahoe hotel suite during a celebrity golf tournament.

In her testimony, Daniels said there was a “power imbalance” when, after leaving the suite’s restroom, she found Trump on the hotel bed in his underwear. That’s when, Daniels said, they had sex.

She testified that Trump had dangled a possible role on his TV show The Celebrity Apprentice . This detail — that the sex wasn’t entirely wanted — caused the defense to request a mistrial, which was denied. It also provided a motive for Trump to suppress the story. Prosecutors said, “Trump knew what happened in that hotel room” and didn’t want it to come out. The adult-film actor’s testimony also included intimate details of her alleged sexual encounter, some of which Judge Merchan agreed with the defense were not necessary.

As October 2016 drew to a close, Cohen testified, he frantically opened bank accounts and tried to come up with a way to pay the $130,000 to keep Daniels quiet. But Trump, Cohen said, wanted to delay the payment until after the election, with the idea that after the election, it wouldn’t matter whether Daniels was paid.

This point, that Trump was making the payment to influence the election by keeping women voters on board, was corroborated by a number of other witnesses. Hicks testified that Trump, by then in the White House, told her that it was better the story came out in 2018, rather than 2016.

Cohen ultimately wired the money himself to Daniels, with the understanding, he said, that he would be repaid by Trump. Cohen testified to a number of conversations with Trump, backed up by phone records, including on the day he wired the payments. But the defense rattled Cohen on cross-examination when it presented evidence that one of the calls that Cohen had said was made through Trump’s bodyguard, Keith Schiller, was instead with Schiller about threats from a 14-year-old prankster.

Still, the heart of the case rested on the testimony of what happened after the election, when the records were falsified, in particular the handwritten notes and documents from the Trump Organization’s former comptroller, Jeff McConney.

McConney authenticated a key record: the bank statement showing Cohen’s wire transfer. That record included handwritten notes from Cohen and Trump’s former chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, describing the $130,000 payment that would be “grossed up” to cover Cohen’s taxes. That sum, combined with another reimbursement and a bonus, for a total of $420,000, was paid out over 12 months at a rate of $35,000 per month.

The payments would be described as pursuant to a “legal retainer.” (Weisselberg, who is serving jail time for perjury in Trump’s civil fraud trial, did not testify.)

On the stand, Cohen described a repayment scheme that formed the basis of the 34 counts of falsified business records: 11 falsified invoices, 12 falsified ledger entries and 11 checks falsely recording the repayment as legal “retainers.” Nine of the checks were signed by Trump himself.

Cohen said he and Weisselberg met and discussed the agreement with Trump shortly before he left for Washington, on or about Jan. 17, 2020. Cohen said Trump approved the deal, saying at the end of the meeting that “it was going to be one heck of a ride” in Washington. Cohen said he and Trump discussed the arrangement again, in early February, in the Oval Office. Photos and White House records corroborated that the two met in the Oval Office at the time.

The defense presented just two witnesses, including Robert Costello, an attorney who wanted to represent Cohen after Cohen’s home and office were searched by the FBI in 2018. Costello had been put on the stand to refute Cohen’s claim that Costello was pressuring Cohen to stay on Trump’s “team.” But Costello’s emails showed that Trump was deciding which of Cohen’s lawyers he wanted to pay and that Costello was concerned about not giving “the appearance that we are following instructions from [Rudy] Giuliani or the president,” referring to the former New York City mayor who was Trump’s lawyer at the time.

Trump verdict would likely move only a small number of votes, poll finds

How this conviction could affect the 2024 election.

Trump has continually blasted any criminal charges he faces as “election interference” affecting his 2024 presidential campaign.

The hush money case likely is the only one of Trump’s four ongoing criminal cases that will be heard ahead of Election Day in November, since federal trials in Washington, D.C., and Florida, as well as a state case in Georgia, are in various stages of delays.

This decision in New York is likely to have rippling effects as Trump campaigns as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. For now, the other 54 criminal charges he faces have not turned off potential voters, and among some Republicans, the cases have bolstered support for him. However, a conviction may not play well with independent and swing voters.

The latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll , from May, showed that 17% of voters surveyed said they would be less likely to vote for Trump if he were convicted, while 15% said they would be more likely to vote for him. And 67% of registered voters nationally said it makes no difference to their vote if Trump is found guilty in his hush money trial.

Ian Sams, spokesperson for the White House counsel’s office, said in a statement: "We respect the rule of law, and have no additional comment.”

President Biden's campaign, however, had a longer statement. “In New York today, we saw that no one is above the law," said spokesperson Michael Tyler. "There is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the ballot box. Convicted felon or not, Trump will be the Republican nominee for president."
