An essay should express continued thought and/or research on a particular subject. It is harder to collect and research information when it is all done at the last minute. Time management is integral to academic writing, especially with longer essays. Utilize these tips to make the writing process as smooth as possible.

Assess the work that needs to be done

  • The page or word count
  • Expectations such as audience and research
  • Think about all of the stages of writing: research, drafting, writing, and revision.
  • Think about how much time you would need to comfortably complete each step. How long will it take you to research? How long will it take you to draft? How long will it take you to write and revise?

Plan your execution

  • Determine a steady pace for your execution of the essay
  • Time until the deadline

Consider time for revision

  • Don’t plan to finish on the day of the deadline. It is ideal to finish the writing at least one day in advance to read over the essay and check for mistakes or possible revisions.
  • If you plan your essay accordingly, the process will be less painful. You will be able to submit your essay on time.

Once you familiarize yourself with the assignment, you can work backwards from your due date to create a plan. This may feel overwhelming at first, but taking it a step at a time can help you feel confident and in control.

Of all the odious things about doing exams (and I can think of an awful lot of them), two parts of the experience, in my opinion, vie for the title of most unpleasant.

The first is Achey Hand: that feeling, an hour or so in to any essay paper, that your poor, sore hand is probably crippled forever, and cannot possibly write one single more word without the attention of a doctor with a special qualification in muscle exhaustion. The blistered lump on your middle finger, meanwhile, is probably beyond all help. The second is the feeling of unmediated horror that will overcome most of us, at one point or another, upon realising that something has gone very wrong . Whether it’s answering too few questions or the wrong questions; or simply misreading the question you did answer – this is perhaps the most toe-curlingly horrid experience one can undergo in an exam. And of course, there are plenty of lesser evils in second, third and fourth places, like: the girl in front of you with the stress-induced nosebleed ( please !); the realisation, five minutes before the end, that you could probably have done a better job of 5b than 5a; the invigilator who catches you trying to squish in a last sentence after the exam’s over.

Unless you’re a mad adrenaline addict, you probably won’t enjoy exams. That’s a fact. They’re simply not fun . Perhaps the actual-getting-it-over-with is a bit better than the weeks of flash cards, past papers, and essay plans that precede ; and starting on the last question of the last paper, your freedom only a glimmer away, is one of the best feelings ever; but, to me, most of the other parts of the process seem designed specifically to terrify and enrage. And of course, paradoxically, the reason they can be so unpleasant is that they’re often incredibly important; a two, or three-hour time-slot that might be your only chance to show off everything you’ve learned over the past few years. The most successful students might get in a pickle about exams, just like the rest of us; they might dread them for weeks, and have days where they feel like doing anything but revision – but often, they see the task in a more practical light. Exams are fundamentally a test of your ability to make the most of the time available to show off as much as possible, and collect all the points you can. The key to nailing them is of course to know your stuff beforehand – but it’s just as much about working efficiently and in an organised way; staying cool and calm to avoid silly mistakes; having a system that makes you feel confident and stops you from panicking. Here, we’ve gathered some tips for doing just that.

Before the exam

1. know what you’re up against before you go in.

At school, I often felt like the teachers must think we were all incredibly dim, so often did they repeat phrases like ‘THREE QUESTIONS. You must answer THREE QUESTIONS. ONLY THREE! BUT NO LESS THAN THREE. Have you all got that?!’ Er… yeah! We’ve been going through past papers for three whole months. I think we all know by now how many questions we’ve got to answer… But I was wrong. In his History I.B. exam, a boy in my year who seemed to get top marks at everything he did only answered two questions. Having stressed himself out completely, and stayed up late revising the night before, he’d misread the front of the paper, and against all common sense thought the format must have changed. Now, this was clearly the direct result of nerves, and a desire to start writing quickly in order to make the most of the time available – but because of this mistake, he missed out on the grade he deserved and wanted. And someone will do this in almost every paper – I’ve done it twice, and most people I know have done something like it at least once. It seems silly, but the way to avoid it is to make sure you know exactly what you’ve got to do before you go into the exam room – it’s very unlikely that the format will change without you being told, so alarm bells should ring if the paper doesn’t look like what you expected. If you were expecting three questions and it looks like you’ve only got to do two, take a deep breath, read the instructions again – maybe even check with the invigilator – and don’t leap in without being absolutely sure of what to do.

2. Practise writing quickly

If you don’t do practice papers before an exam, you might be surprised at how difficult it is to write quickly and legibly. Messy handwriting is a very good way to annoy the person marking your paper before they’ve even started; but equally, you don’t want to undersell yourself by not finishing your answer. This might sound like overkill, but pens make a huge difference: I find I can scrawl a lot quicker with an ink pen than a biro, because I don’t have to press down on the page. Do a past paper a few days before and time it really strictly – work out a way to write quickly and neatly so that you don’t waste your first exam cracking this.

3. Be realistic

Know before you go into the exam what sort of answers you can realistically write in the time you’ve got. If you’ve got 45 minutes for an essay question, does that mean you can fit in an introduction, three main points and a conclusion? Know the amount of detail and sophistication you’ve got time for. Don’t make the mistake of setting the scope of an answer too wide, and then not being able to finish it – something concise and complete will read much better than something broadly conceived and unfinished.

In the exam: keeping on top of things

4. first: read every question carefully.

In most exams these days, you’ll have to select to answer one or two from a range of questions. Before you leap in, take a deep breath and read every question carefully. Don’t skim-read, and don’t dismiss an option before thinking about it for at least a few seconds. Examiners have a nasty habit of dressing simple questions up in bewildering language: don’t miss a gem because it’s been confusingly-worded. Similarly, once you’ve chosen a question: MAKE SURE YOU READ IT PROPERLY. A bit like doing too many or too few questions, misreading a question (especially a long answer one) can result in you missing out on marks that you deserve to get. No matter how brilliant, inspired, or interesting an answer is, if it answers the wrong question , it’ll probably be a disaster. Make sure you avoid a nightmare by reading everything carefully.

5. Divide your time up

Before an exam, when you’re double- and triple-checking how many and what sort of questions you’ve got to do, make a plan of how long you’re going to spend on each thing – and then make sure you stick to it . Students who do well in exams always know how they’re going to approach a paper, and how to portion out their time so that they don’t run out.

How you structure your time will of course vary according to the way you work, and the sorts of questions you’ve got to answer. Start by working out what carries the most marks, and how long you’re going to need to get those marks: if you’ve got to do three essays and thirty short answer questions in the space of two hours, you don’t want to spend ages on a difficult short question at the expense of the essays. When you’re planning how to spend your time, make sure you assign some time at the beginning for planning, and at the end to check and finish things off. If I’ve got to write three essays in a three-hour exam, I spend fifteen minutes at the beginning reading the paper and jotting down three short plans, and then fifty minutes writing each, with fifteen minutes at the end to read and check. However, I know people who find it much easier to launch in immediately and write the bodies of their essays in forty-five minutes each, and then leave a few blank pages at the end of each essay to come back in the last forty-five minutes and write three conclusions. Before the exam, try a few different ways of answering and find out what works best. Crucially, whatever your plan is, you must stick to it religiously. If you know you’ve got twenty minutes each for three answers, DO NOT, whatever you do, let yourself spend twenty-five minutes on the first. It’s always incredibly tempting to give yourself just another few minutes to try and squeeze one last point into your conclusion, but have the discipline to resist, because a rushed final answer will probably do more damage than an excellent first one can make up for. If you’re really tempted to spend a little more time than you’re allowed on a question, leave a blank page after your answer, and determine to come back to it at the end if you can.

6. Start with something you can really do

Some people like to launch straight into the hard stuff: to get a question they’ve been dreading out of the way, knocked on the head, leaving lots of time at the end to do everything else at a more leisurely pace. I like to start strong: with a favourite topic, or a question I know I can nail – doing something like that early, I find, makes me feel confident – I can do this . I also tend to leave the questions I’m dreading most until the end, and allot a little more time to attempt them: getting everything else out of the way so that I can concentrate on my nightmare question . This is very subjective, though: again, it’s all about experimenting before the exam to find a method that suits you best.

7. Plan long answers

As I’m sure you’ve been told a million times before, plan your long answers or essay questions, because this will enable you to write quickly and confidently, and construct better answers. But remember, your plan won’t get marked. I don’t hold with this idea that you should spend half, or even a third of your time planning – use all the time possible on actually writing , to show off how well you can express your thoughts. Frequently, new ideas occur to you as you write, that you’d never have thought of while planning. Don’t spend ages deciding exactly what you’re going to say at the expense of actually having time to say it.

8. And if disaster strikes…

If you go totally blank and find you can’t answer something, realise you’ve answered the wrong number of questions, or discover you’ve misread the question, do not panic. Quickly write down what you’ve done in your script, so that the examiner can see what’s happened, and then use the remaining time to write a new, or alternative answer in bullet-points. Get in as much information as you can; hopefully, whoever marks the paper will be sympathetic and realise that this sort of thing can happen to anyone. If you can show them that you’ve realised the problem and tried to correct your error, and that you do know your stuff, they’ll most likely be kind, and try to give you as many marks as they can.

9. ask for new scripts before you need them.

If you’re a cramming-it-all-in, mad-hurry, writing-at-the-speed-of-light sort of person, it can be incredibly frustrating waiting for the invigilator to shuffle their way over to you with more paper. If you know you’re going to need more paper in a few minutes’ time, stick your hand up while you keep writing; not only will it save you precious minutes, but stop that feeling of panic when you think the invigilator, moving at a snail’s pace and seemingly almost blind, is never going to notice your sweaty, anxiously-waving hand.

10. Don’t leave early

The temptation to leave an exam early (especially if it’s your last one, or you’ve got another later on the same day) can be almost irresistible: freedom, and an escape from the palpable tension of the exam hall. But whatever you do, resist. Sit and re-read what you’ve written; double-check all of your answers; check your spelling and rewrite any illegible, hastily-scrawled words. Twenty minutes hanging about outside the exam room, waiting for your friends to finish, or in the library preparing for the next one, are fairly inconsequential, but you can guarantee that if you leave early, you’ll immediately realise you’ve missed something important or done something catastrophically wrong. Your two hours are precious! You’ll never get it back, but you will have endless time to waste after you’re done.

However, Urgent work may not always be very important, but they seem to be very critical. By doing and finishing the most critical task of the day, we feel energetic and our brain continuously feels very active.  

However, setting our priorities before working is a conventional method of time management. In this modern era, we should implement Covey’s Time Management Matrix 

According to Covey, each task can be broken down according to its urgency and importance. All in all, we have 4 categories of tasks.

Quadrant 1: Important and Urgent - Necessity 

To avoid serious consequences in future, in this quadrant we have to deal with the unforeseen events and pressing problems, immediately. Most of the time, some issues are unexpected and hence proper planning may not happen. Therefore, sometimes, it’s just enough to work on them proactively— before they have become urgent. 

Quadrant 2: Important but Not Urgent - Extraordinary Productivity

Tasks in this quadrant are not that urgent. We can keep them aside for some time, but this is a mistake.  Ideally, this is the quadrant where one should spend most of one’s time- working on strategic and high-impact tasks. They will bring more value to your studies, work or business. This is one way to help grow professionally and personally. 

Quadrant 3: Not Important but Urgent - Distraction

Since we have to constantly keep ourselves busy, in this quadrant we have to deal with the less urgent tasks. They might distract an individual from the main goals, but as Dwight Eisenhower puts it, ‘What is urgent is seldom important.

There are times when we can avoid these petty issues entirely, but the burden automatically reduces if this task gets delegated to someone else in the team or in class. If the delegation of this assignment is not possible then the same task can be completed by including small batches. The better the job, the more hours can be allocated for particular tasks thereby making the work easy. 

Quadrant 4: Not Important and Not Urgent - Waste 

These tasks are neither important nor urgent. Small amounts of trivial activities help us relax. Yet we tend to waste a lot of time in this quadrant, so it is always advised to be careful because we may be losing the present moment. 

Therefore, time management skills and following these quadrants during studies or at the workplace becomes essential to handle every project with diligence in future. In other words, as Lord Chesterfield had mentioned, “Take care of the minutes and the hours will take care of themselves.”

Identify if there might be any other distractions such as the TV, your reading book or anything else that could draw your attention away from the task at hand.

5. Figure out when you are most productive

Very few people can say that they can maintain high levels of productivity for an entire day. For most people there is a window in the day when their brain is most focused, when they are less likely to succumb to distractions and when they are able to do their most productive work.

Regardless of whether it is morning, afternoon or evening, try to structure your day around this or at least tackle your trickiest tasks during the time you feel the most alert. 

6. Set a daily schedule

This is slightly different from writing your to-do list for the day. This is more about setting a schedule for the day and ensuring that you stay on top of all the things you have to get through, but also ensuring that you schedule in leisure time, time for exercise etc. 

Not only will it keep you on track, but it also gives you things to look forward to and means that you are more likely to schedule things into the day that aren’t just university work.

Time Management: The Essay Writing/Life Balance

With everything going on in your life, how are you supposed to find the time to write your college application essay? Believe it or not, it’s easier than you think. With these simple time management tricks, you will dig up pockets of time you never knew you had, learn to use every hour of your day wisely, and maybe even find a little time to spare! (OITNB marathons do need to be finished, after all.)

Plan Out Your Day

Make a schedule of everything you would like to get accomplished during your day (we recommend doing this either the night before, or even a full week in advance).. Map out room for classes, after school activities work and any other obligations — and then add in time for essay-writing. An essay writing slot could consist of just an hour or two a day set aside to brainstorm, free write or play with your draft. Hours add up fast, and  a few hours a week can go a long way.

Take a Break

To keep your focus, take short breaks in between writing. Use this time to take a quick walk, check your messages, or get a snack (keep those energy levels up!). Plan your breaks so they’re short and contained. Watching a documentary on Netflix is not “a break” (though we do recommend that during non-essay writing time). One or two Beyonce videos (excluding Lemonade , obvs) should be enough to do the trick.

Turn off Your Phone

We know. It’s hard. PHONES ARE LIFE. Yours is probably an extension of your arm that you only put down before you hop in the shower or dive into a swimming pool (and tech accessory companies are already trying to find workarounds for those scenarios ). But we promise — you will live if you turn off your phone for an hour. Not only will you survive, you will thrive. Start by trying a single hour without your electronic devices on blast. Disconnect from the internet while you type out your essay. You will be amazed by the number of times you instinctively  itch to check your Twitter account, and also by the time you have to write when the ability to scroll through your feeds is not there.

We love a bowl of mac and cheese as much as anyone else (maybe even more).  But all the hoopla about the benefits of eating healthy is not just hype. Eating well will actually help improve your energy levels, unlike chowing down on something like candy which, after its initial boost wears off, is bound to make you sluggish. Try eating high-antioxidant foods such as blueberries and dark chocolate, whole grains, fish (hey, sushi is a brain food too), nuts, and please, please don’t skip breakfast!  

Get Your Zzzzz’s

Sleep is one of those things you don’t think you need more of until you finally feel what it’s like to have enough of it. The difference between your mind’s ability to focus and flourish when it is fully rested versus when you are running on an empty tank is astonishing.Of course, we know what you’re thinking: “How am I supposed to find time to sleep if I already don’t have time to write my essay?” Just trust us. Build 7-8 hours of sleep into your schedule and your whole LIFE will become more efficient. Tasks that would take two hours when you’re tired may only take you an hour to complete after a good night’s rest. Reset your body so you can give all you’ve got to that nifty schedule you made and make the most of every day.

Use Your Free Periods

Do you have a lunch period or a study hall? Well, instead of gossiping in the cafeteria or heading to the Dairy Queen, use at least one or two free periods a week to work on your college essay. These are also great times to do research on colleges, consult with a guidance counselor for advice, or work your way through the many supplements you have to write. Even if you don’t have a free period, you might be able to find time during the average school day to do some brainstorming or editing. Did you finish the test early? Substitute teacher? Any amount of free time could help you work toward your goal of a fabulous essay.

9 Tips to Ace That Timed Essay

Exams are almost upon us, and a familiar sense of foreboding has settled over the campus. One exam element that can be particularly intimidating for some students is the timed essay: an exam question which demands a full essay on a topic that is typically revealed for the first time during the test. While these kinds of questions may seem scary, there are plenty of ways to make them easy for yourself. Read on for tips about how to prepare in advance of the exam and how to approach timed essays before, during, and after the writing process.

While Preparing for the Exam: Become familiar with the course content. If the professor hasn’t told you in advance what a timed essay prompt will be, it can be intimidating to think that you will have to write about a subject you’ve never seen before. However, this thinking process does not reflect the reality of the situation. In fact, even if your teacher hasn’t given you any hints about the essay question, you do know what it will be about: the concepts and ideas you’ve discussed in the course. Therefore, if you take the time to review your notes and ensure you understand everything that was discussed, it should be difficult for the essay question to catch you off guard. As soon as you read the question, relevant course concepts will start popping into your head, and you’ll just have to organize them into a coherent essay. Start planning if you can. Although the situation described above sometimes occurs, it’s also very common for professors to give their students a fairly detailed idea of what an essay question will involve in advance of the test day. (After all, professors want to mark high-quality essays written by well-prepared students!) This heads-up gives you a great chance to prepare for the exam. If you have the time, consider mapping out a possible essay in point form before the day of the exam arrives. Consider practicing writing under time pressure. You’ve probably written dozens of essays before--the only thing that sets a timed essay apart is that it’s timed. Students often struggle to complete the full essay within the time constraints, particularly if they have to write longhand when they’re accustomed to working on the computer. For this reason, it can be helpful to simulate the conditions of a timed exam before the actual day: pick a practice question, find some lined paper, set a stopwatch, and see how you do! Before You Start Writing: Read the question carefully. The most critical part of the essay-writing process actually happens before you write your first word. When you flip to the essay question, make sure you read it as carefully as you can, noting the difference between words such as ‘contrast’ and ‘analyze’ and highlighting any details which the professor specifically instructs you to include. It’s not uncommon for excellent essays to receive low marks because the student answered a question other than the one that was asked. Make a clear and specific plan. Some students react to the time pressure of essay exams by scribbling down their introduction as soon as they’ve read the question and figuring out their points as they go. While it might seem counter-intuitive, taking five or ten minutes before you start writing in order to draw up a plan will be an enormous time saver. Decide on your thesis, the topic of each paragraph, and the arguments which you intend to cover, then jot down some quick point-form notes. This process won’t take long, and, once you complete it, all that’s left will be to expand those notes into a well-organized essay. Without a clear plan, you run the risk of realizing partway through that you’ve drifted off topic or written yourself into a corner, and fixing these mistakes will consume a ton of extra time. Schedule a set time for each paragraph. On the topic of planning, it’s important to sketch out an idea of how long you want to spend on each section of your essay. (If you know the number of paragraphs you’ll need to write ahead of time, you can do this before the exam even starts!) Take note of the amount of time allotted for the exam and split it into reasonably-sized segments, leaving some time at the end for revision if possible. Without a schedule to follow, it’s easy to become too focused on a single paragraph and run out of time to finish the essay. While You’re Writing: Write clearly and double-space. This tip may seem basic, but it’s easy to forget and it can make a big difference. Both these measures won’t just make it easier for the marker to read your paper; they'll also help you write it. If you have time left at the end of the exam for review, having the ability to skim quickly through your work and write revisions in blank spaces will be incredibly helpful.

Keep yourself on schedule.  Remember the paragraph-based schedule we discussed above? It’ll be useless if you don’t do regular check-ins during the exam. Keep an eye on the clock to ensure you’re always on track. If you realize that you’re falling dangerously behind schedule, it might be necessary to cut some arguments or examples you planned to include. Although making these omissions can be painful, it’s better to leave out a few points from one section than to leave out an entire paragraph because you ran out of time. Don’t worry too much about editing and revision before you finish. When composing essays, many students stop and read over each paragraph once they finish it, making sure that it’s well-written and free of errors before advancing to the next one. This approach is entirely logical when there’s no time pressure involved, but it can actually work against you during an exam. Perfecting paragraphs is a time-consuming process, and, if you spend too much time editing before the essay is finished, you might have to rush through the last few sections or leave them out entirely. For this reason, it’s best to focus on producing a complete first draft before you worry about edits and revisions.

After You’ve Finished Writing: Re-read the question and ensure you’ve addressed all parts. The most important part of writing an essay exam is ensuring that you’re answering the question was posed. Even if you made sure you were interpreting everything correctly before you began, you may have forgotten to address a subquestion or integrate an example as you were writing. Before you submit, read the prompt again and make sure your completed essay matches up! Edit if you have time. If you have enough time left over, read your essay again and make corrections. When you’re working under time pressure, it’s easy to make grammar mistakes or produce hard-to-follow sentences; the final few minutes are your chance to clean up those errors. Unless if you finished way ahead of schedule, don’t worry about major revisions like reorganizing the structure of the essay--it’s better to hand in an essay with an imperfect structure than a paper that’s impossible to follow because you had to stop halfway through the revision process.

Remember to have the right perspective. Once you hand your exam to the professor, relax! It’s easy to work yourself up after an essay exam when you didn’t get the chance to read your work over or you feel like your arguments were weak. However, it’s important to keep in mind that your professor understands the circumstances under which the essay was written. They’re fully aware of the time pressure you were dealing with, and they will judge your work far differently than they would judge a typical essay with a deadline set weeks after the assignment date. If you did your best to write a complete, clear, and insightful essay within the time allotted, you should have nothing to worry about. Best of luck during the upcoming exam season!

Time management techniques will help you handle projects and tasks within tight deadlines effectively. When you use time efficiently, you will be able to do more things in less time.

What Is Time Management?

To better understand the techniques below, it’s essential to know what the term ‘time management’ means. Put simply, “Time Management” refers to the process of organizing and planning the amount of time you have to accomplish specific goals, projects, or tasks. For effective time management, you have to learn how to allocate the right time to the right activity.

It’s up to you to identify and prioritize tasks according to their urgency and importance and estimate the time it will take to accomplish them. Poor time management usually leads to failure to get things done within the set timeframe. Of course, this can negatively affect your career and personal life.

With that in mind, here are 12 effective time management methods to help put you on the right path to success, promotions, and pay raises.

Time Management Techniques

1. plan your work in advance.

Planning ahead of time is a wise strategy to implement in your personal and professional life. Not only does it help you stay organized all day long, but it also ensures that you get the right things done at the right time.

There are many methods that you can try to help you plan out each day, week, or month. These approaches work differently for people, and it’s up to you to find one that suits you best. One great option is to use a time management app or tool. You can also try customizable calendars or personal organizers, notepads, bullet journals, to-do lists, or use a combination of these options.

Take a to-do list as an example. It helps give you a clear picture of what to expect and what needs to be accomplished at a given time, each day or week. Creating a to-do list doesn’t have to be a complicated process. You can take a few moments each night before you sleep to jot down a list of things to do so that you know where to resume or start work the next day.

2. Prioritise

Another crucial time management strategy is to set clear priorities. Sometimes, when starting a project, you may have a long to-do list that makes work seem overwhelming. However, when you divide the project into smaller chunks, it becomes more manageable.

Even so, don’t stop at the list. You have to distinguish the urgent and important tasks on your list and prioritize them. This way, it becomes easier to spot tasks that require your attention, check if you’re on track, and accomplish tasks that are more urgent first.

The study shows that multitasking takes as much as 40 percent more time than if one focused on one task at a time. 

To really understand whether multitasking is helping you or wasting your time , try single-tasking. Focus on one activity, task, or project at a time, and then switch to another once the first task is accomplished. You’re likely to see a major difference in productivity, and you might end up saving time in the process.

Most importantly, try to implement the Pomodoro Technique that splits projects into shorter, 25-minute tasks, allowing you to take short breaks in between. This way, not only will your work be more manageable, but you’ll also avoid overworking yourself.

4. Set Aside Time for Emails

Understandably, you need to check and respond to your emails occasionally, a task that can be quite tedious. The thing is, you waste a lot of time checking emails—time that would otherwise be used to handle more pressing matters.

Unless your work responsibility is solely to check and reply to emails, you should practice limiting the time you spend on them. Designate specific times during the day for reading emails. Focus on this task within that set timeframe, and be sure to get most things done.

During this time, everything else is closed. After you’re done, or when the time for checking emails is up, turn off all email notifications or popups until it’s that task’s time again the next day.

One of the most effective time management strategies is to avoid distractions while working. You only have a few hours to accomplish the goals of the day. So, try to minimize distractions and interruptions as much as possible to focus on important tasks.

Distractions can come in many forms, such as e-mails, using social media, a colleague dropping by for a chat, making phone calls, and so on. Find a way to block these distractions and interruptions so you can stay focused on the tasks at hand.

You could try a time blocking method, where you commit a certain number of hours to just one task while blocking off time for other tasks. During this time, switch off or put your phone on silent, don’t answer unnecessary calls, turn off Facebook message popups, and let coworkers know that you’re not to be disturbed.

For the night owl, you know you’re slow to wake up and need some time to get in the mood for work. Push the most demanding tasks to the afternoon and do other light tasks in the mornings.

Use productivity tracker to know when you’re most awake, motivated, or alert. This way, you can work when you’re in your best mood and more energized. Take advantage of this time to accomplish most of the tasks on your to-do list.

7. Work with a Timer

Working with a timer is undeniably one of the most effective time management methods. A timer allows you to set time limits and reminds you to take breaks. In the process, you become more productive without feeling burned out.

The short breaks give you time to refresh your mind, and you can take this chance to get out of the office for a short walk, take a coffee break, or chat with colleagues. You’ll come back with renewed energy and able to work more efficiently.

At first, you may find the process complicated. However, with time and practice, it becomes easier for you to stick to a routine that makes you more efficient and productive.

Let’s say waking up at 6:30 am and starting the day by checking emails end up wasting most of your morning hours. In this case, consider shifting the task of reading emails to the afternoon or evenings. The point is to find a schedule that suits you perfectly. This will ensure that you always have enough time to accomplish most of your daily or weekly tasks.

12. Just Say “No”

Understandably, you don’t want to upset your colleagues or boss. However, saying ‘no’ can help you save time you had already set aside to work on your projects. You may have your plate full, but your supervisor still wants to delegate a few tasks to you. If you don’t learn to say no, you can easily end up being overworked and stressed.

Saying no can be tricky since you don’t want to be seen as the one who refuses work. However, you can politely explain why you’ll not take on any additional tasks or ask if it can be postponed to a later date. Let them know that re-scheduling the new responsibilities will enable you to finish the current assignments and then embark on those other tasks.

Finally, find the appropriate tool to back up your time management techniques. This can be a time tracker or a project management system that allows you to schedule work and track your progress. One of the keys to acing the APUSH DBQ is to gain a deep understanding of the rubric and to practice the necessary skills consistently. Here are some tips and strategies to help you improve your DBQ skills:

1. Understand the rubric: Familiarize yourself with the DBQ rubric, which consists of 7 possible points. It's crucial to know how the points are allocated so that you can target specific areas for improvement. The points are divided as follows: 1 point for Contextualization, 1 point for Thesis, 3 points for using Evidence, and 2 points for Argument Development.

2. Read and analyze the prompt: Take time to carefully read the prompt and understand what it's asking. Look for key action terms such as "analyze," "evaluate," or "argue" to better understand the task at hand.

3. Plan your essay: Spend some time (approximately 10-15 minutes) planning your essay before you start writing. Identify which documents will be used as evidence and determine how they can be grouped to support your argument. Sketch out a quick outline to guide your writing.

4. Contextualize: Set the stage for your essay by providing background information about the period in question. This helps establish a broader context for the topic and shows your understanding of the historical period.

5. Craft a strong thesis statement: Your thesis should be clear, concise, and address the prompt directly. Ensure that your thesis can be supported by the documents provided and demonstrates a clear argument.

6. Use evidence effectively: Use a majority of the documents provided (usually 3 out of 5) to support your thesis. Be sure to clearly explain how the evidence supports your argument and don't simply summarize the documents. Using specific examples and quotes from the documents will strengthen your essay.

7. Develop your argument: To earn the two points for Argument Development, you need to use at least two pieces of outside evidence to support your thesis, and analyze the point of view, purpose, historical context, or audience for three of the documents.

8. Connect the dots with synthesis: Demonstrate connections between your thesis and broader historical themes or patterns. This helps to show that you understand the implications of your argument in a larger context.

9. Manage your time: Balancing planning, writing, and proofreading your essay is crucial for success. Create a timeline for yourself based on the amount of time allocated for the DBQ and stick to it.

10. Practice, practice, practice: The more you practice writing DBQs, the more comfortable you'll become with the process. Use available resources, such as practice exams, textbooks, and online resources to find sample DBQ prompts and practice writing under timed conditions.

Remember that continued practice and feedback will lead to improvement. Seek help from your teacher or peers to get useful feedback on your DBQ skills, and make sure to apply this feedback in your future practice sessions.
