In July and August 1975, the Cabinet and the Parliament approved Indira Gandhi's last proposal to declare an emergency, which had been approved by the President of India.

It was based on the argument that the Indian state faced pressing internal and external threats. All the fundamental rights were suspended at that time including freedom of speech and expression which led to protests and chaos in the country. After the emergency period was over, Congress lost the elections and was replaced by Janata Party led by Moraji Desai. But, Gandhi again came to power in 1980.

Essay on Indira Gandhi In English

Indira gandhi essay in english.

She was born on 19th November 1917 in Uttar Pradesh. She was the daughter of the first and former prime minister of the nation, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. In her childhood, Indira Gandhi was one of the most intelligent and brightest students when she was in the school. She had taken part in competitions and played leadership roles in school and even college times. This is how she was grown-up learning these things.

She had learned lots of lessons throughout her studies. After the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the former and the second prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi played the role of Indian prime minister very well. She took this responsibility on 24th January 1966. She was capable of taking this responsibility and this is why she decided to go with this role.

As she was born and brought up in a family of freedom fighters and was surrounded by seasoned politicians, she came to know about plenty of political tactics and techniques. Her political game was too strong. Before taking the responsibility of the Indian prime minister, Indira Gandhi was an Information and Broadcasting Minister. She was the first woman in the country to become prime minister.

Paragraph on Indira Gandhi

When she was the prime minister, she had gone through many ups and downs. Under her impracticable leadership, India got a win in the war against Pakistan held in 1970. It was her contribution that Bangladesh (previously known as East Pakistan) got freed from Pakistan.

In 1970, she made a strong move by making all the banks nationalized in the country. It helped to provide a strong economic opportunity to the nation. Even today, we can see the influence of banks’ nationalization in the country.

Indira Gandhi was known to be a legend in the country. Today’s youngsters have very less knowledge about this personality. In 1977, she imposed an emergency upon the country. People today know this much about her. At that time, most people criticized her for this move. Even till date, people do not like this idea of the Indira Gandhi. But she imposed an emergency to curb anti-national and anti-democratic elements in the country.

Of course, she was aware of this move’s effect on her election viewpoints, but still, she went with this decision. This is how she imposed the National Emergency Act. She was a leader who gave priority to the country than herself. This is why she was known to be the smartest and most motivating leader of the country who could do everything for her nation.

Being the only and first woman to stay in the most powerful position, she was the first to break the stereotype, that women in the country are distinguished in all spheres of life. If we compare our country with the USA, then this stereotype has not been broken yet. There is no female president in the USA till date.

In her regimen, India was one of the fastest-developing countries in the world having strong economic aspects. Millions of women in the country got dedication and motivation from her, which made them believe in themselves and do something for their lives.

Short Note on Indira Gandhi

After the emergency imposed by her and when it was lifted, she failed in elections and it was expected. But in her second term of leadership, she came back with a strong entity when the Khalistan movement was reaching its peak. According to the intelligence source, she got to know about the terrorists hiding in the golden temple located in Amritsar, they were filled with ammunition and arms.

It was all because of the fact that Sikhs demanded a separate sovereign country in Punjab and this demand was getting older and uglier every day. Now, she had to do something to save her country. This is why she approved Operation Blue Star. This operation was designed to stop violence and activities of terrorism in the country.

This operation was considered an anti-Sikh movement and became a religious fight against her. Many bad things happened during this operation that people can never forget. The scenes were too tragic, no one wants to remember those incidents again in their lives.

Day by day, things got a tragic move, when Indira Gandhi was killed in cold blood. She was murdered on 31st October 1984. With her death, the entire country succumbed to hatred and violence.

Final words

Indira Gandhi was known as the ‘Iron lady of India’ due to her courageous acts, smart decisions, and motivated personality. She did a lot for her country and this is how we are living in a strong economical nation. She was the president of the Congress Party. After becoming the prime minister of the country, the congress party was separated.

But she was a strong lady and made all hard efforts to overcome all the problems in her political career to become the prime minister of India. She was still a memorable and popular political leader and figure in our country. She is still remembered in the entire country because of her good work and leadership acts.

Essay on Indira Gandhi 200 Words in English

Essay on indira gandhi 200-300 words.

Indira Gandhi was an Indian politician and the first and only female Prime Minister of India. She was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, India. She was the daughter of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and played a significant role in Indian politics for over two decades.

Indira Gandhi served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. During her time in office, she implemented several significant policies, including the nationalization of banks and the abolition of privy purses for Indian princes.

One of her most notable achievements was the successful handling of the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh as an independent country. Her leadership in this crisis was praised worldwide.

Indira Gandhi also played an instrumental role in India’s nuclear program, leading the country towards nuclear self-sufficiency. Her government also initiated several measures to promote the welfare of the underprivileged, including the nationalization of coal mines and the introduction of land reforms.

However, her tenure as Prime Minister was not without controversy. She was accused of authoritarianism and violating civil liberties during the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977. Her decision to launch Operation Blue Star in 1984 to remove militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar also led to widespread protests and ultimately her assassination by her own bodyguards.

Despite the controversies, Indira Gandhi remains a towering figure in Indian politics and a symbol of women’s empowerment in the country. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of women to enter the political arena and make their mark.

At that time, Anand Bhawan at Allahabad was the hub of all political activities in India. It was the central Place to meet great Indian National Congress leaders. Even Mahatma Gandhi often stayed here.

Feroze Gandhi was at that time the Editor of the National Herald, a newspaper having a good reading public then, and he rose to be a second Congress leader letter. She married Feroze Gandhi on 26 March 1942.

Indira Gandhi got the full benefit of being active in politics since childhood and emerged as one of the country’s most powerful leaders. After India’s independence on August 15, 1947, his father Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of the country. One of the most enlightened and respected political leaders of the time, Jai Prakash Narayan launched a peaceful but vigorous movement against Indira Gandhi, and within a short period of time, the public felt a sense of hatred towards his government. The result was that she lost the election in 1977 and formed the Janata Party government at the Center.

In fact, the Allahabad High Court’s decision in one case went against him. Soon, infighting broke out in the Janata Party and people soon got fed up with it. The result was that Indira Gandhi again came to power in the 1980 election.

When and how Emergency was Declared in Indira Gandhi Government

  • The Slogan Eradicate Poverty and Indira:  In order to strengthen her position in the party and the country, Indira Gandhi dissolved the Lok Sabha and announced a mid-term election, which shocked the opposition. Indira Gandhi went to the polls with the slogan ‘Eradicate Poverty’ and gradually the electoral atmosphere began to build in her favour and the Congress gained a lot. Congress got 352 seats out of 518.
  • The Period of Economic Recession:  Indira Gandhi had a huge success in this election and tried to implement new programs of development in various areas but problems within the country were increasing. People were upset due to inflation. Economic problems also increased due to the economic burden of 1971 war. Meanwhile, drought and famine worsened the situation.
  • Allegation of Corruption and the Inflation:  Overall, a period of economic recession was going on in which industry businesses were also falling apart. Unemployment had also increased a lot and government employees were demanding wage increase due to inflation. In the midst of all these problems, allegations of corruption were also leveled against the government.
  • Movement led by Opposition and Indira:  Indira Gandhi twice declared states governed by the opposition as ‘anarchic’ under Section 356 of the Constitution and imposed President’s rule on them. Due to which some well-known leaders of the party and opposition leaders turned against the government.
  • Fierce Movement by Opposition and Indira:  Raj Narayan filed an election petition and on 12 th  June 1975; the Allahabad High Court quashed the election of Indira Gandhi and banned her from contesting elections for six years. Indira appealed against this decision to the Supreme Court and the court fixed the day of July 14, but the opposition did not want to wait until July 14. Jai Prakash Narayan and the supported opposition gave the movement a fierce look.
  • Declaration of Emergency:  To counter these circumstances, on June 26, 1975, the President declared a state of emergency in the morning and Jayaprakash Narayan, Morarji Desai and thousands of other big and small leaders were arrested and imprisoned. Government newspapers, radio and television Censored on. Fundamental rights were also almost abolished.

After this, elections were held in 1977; perhaps Indira Gandhi could not evaluate the situation properly. The united opposition and its allies got 330 seats out of 542 while Indira Gandhi’s Congress Party could manage only 154 seats. But the opposition could not handle the country properly and mid-term elections were declared. In this election her party won 353 seats and she became the Prime minister again.
