Program Description

The major allows students to develop their writing skills through craft classes, literature classes, and writing workshops, in preparation for a variety of post-graduation options, from continuing on to M.F.A. degree programs to working in the professional fields of publishing, editing and education. The program recognizes students must understand the relationship between tradition and individual talent, and provides a required sequence of literature courses designed to give students an overview of the historical literary traditions, especially modern and contemporary prose and poetry. It also provides options for sequences of writing workshops, requires a course in creative writing theory, and requires a course that fosters professional development and features live reading by visiting authors. The program culminates in a capstone experience, the senior thesis, a collection of poetry or prose of publishable quality that includes a critical preface demonstrating the students' ability to analyze and contextually their own writing.

What is Creative Writing?

Creative writing is a liberal arts discipline concerned with the practice of literary art, the life of the imagination, and the capacities of language. Creative writing students analyze masterworks of fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction from different periods and cultures; compose their own original works; develop editing and communication skills; and explore the world of contemporary publishing.

You Might Like This Program If...

  • Your nose is always in a book.
  • When you’re not reading, you’re writing.
  • You enjoy the editing and revision process.
  • You can see yourself working on the editorial staff of Lake Effect, Penn State Behrend’s international literary journal.

Entrance to Major

In order to be eligible for entrance to this major, a student must:

  • attain at least a C (2.00) cumulative grade-point average for all courses taken at the University; and

Academic Advising

The objectives of the university's academic advising program are to help advisees identify and achieve their academic goals, to promote their intellectual discovery, and to encourage students to take advantage of both in-and out-of class educational opportunities in order that they become self-directed learners and decision makers.

Both advisers and advisees share responsibility for making the advising relationship succeed. By encouraging their advisees to become engaged in their education, to meet their educational goals, and to develop the habit of learning, advisers assume a significant educational role. The advisee's unit of enrollment will provide each advisee with a primary academic adviser, the information needed to plan the chosen program of study, and referrals to other specialized resources.

BA/MA Graduate Program in Creative Writing

Photo of BAMA Students

Since 2013, the English Department has offered an integrated undergraduate/graduate degree in English with a creative writing concentration. Designed for highly motivated students to hone their skills in poetry or prose (fiction and creative nonfiction), this full-residency program is open to all Penn State students. Both degrees are completed in two years on the University Park campus: the student’s fourth year and the additional MA year.

All students complete 30 credits of course work at the 400 and 500 level in creative writing or literary study (up to 12 credits can be counted from the BA degree). During the fifth year, under the supervision of a creative writing faculty member, students take graduate-level workshops and complete a substantial creative project, due at the end of the MA year.

The fifth year is especially useful for writers who are polishing portfolios for eventual application to outside MFA programs, or for those who wish to gain experience in an internship or to learn how to teach writing.

Admission Requirements

The integrated BA/MA program is limited, and admission is highly selective. (Students may apply in more than one genre, provided they submit a full writing sample in each.)

Successful applicants:

  • Must be enrolled in the English BA program.
  • Must have completed 60 credits (typically 5 semesters).
  • Should have a recommended overall GPA of at least 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) in undergraduate coursework and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in all coursework completed for the English major. (Provisional admits are made on rare occasion, but the student must meet the minimum GPA within one semester.)
  • Must submit a statement of purpose, a writing sample (10 pages of poetry and no more than 25 pages of prose), an academic transcript, and a resume in the on-line application form.
  • Must be recommended by two faculty members familiar with the student’s writing and course work.

Tuition and Charges

Undergraduate tuition rates apply in the fourth year. Fifth-year students receive teaching assistantships that provide pedagogical training and college teaching experience in exchange for tuition remission, a stipend, and health insurance.

Application Deadline:   The application deadline for the BA/MA Program is March 15.

Resources and Opportunities

In addition to teaching composition, students in the MA year may compete for special writing awards and apply for additional funding for travel and study abroad. BA/MA students have completed internships in the Digital English Studio, scholarly publications produced by the University Libraries, and other sites on campus and off.

BA/MA students attend special meetings with distinguished writers who visit campus through the Mary Rolling Reading Series and The Emily Dickinson Lectureship in American Poetry (sponsored by George Kelly ’59 and Barbara Martino Kelly (’59). They have the additional opportunity of working privately with the Fisher Family Writer-in-Residence sponsored by Steven L. Fisher (’70) and family.

More than anything else, BA/MA students repeatedly praise the small size of the program, individualized attention, and most of all the sense of community that emerges as students work hard together in a supportive

130 Years of Writing in (and about) Penn State

display case of Penn State writers and their books, with text about their lives and accomplishments.

For more about the history of these and other Penn State writers, stop by Burrowes Building’s fourth floor display case, which has a new design and new material, just in time to inspire Penn State students writers for the new semester. In addition to learning about Heller and Pattee, you’ll see information about and books by Theodore Roethke, Joseph L. Grucci, John Barth, Diane Ackerman, Agah Shahid Ali, and Robin Becker.

The project was created as collaboration between Director of Creative Writing Julia Spicher Kasdorf and Sophia Alexander, a design major with a creative writing minor. Sophia is in her last semester here at Penn State and she will use this project in her design portfolio as she searches for jobs this semester. Professor Kasdorf notes: “My hope in putting this together is that students will see themselves as part of this long and rich tradition of people writing works of literature in this place.”
