With an ever-increasing population, the upscaling of processes to efficiently mass produce food, pharmaceuticals and chemicals is essential to society. From COVID-19 vaccines to vegan products, over recent years there have been many examples of manufacturing processes that have inspired me to specialise in the field of chemical engineering. The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the ability of engineers worldwide to suddenly and rapidly mass produce the coronavirus vaccines in order to save countless lives. In contrast to the abrupt demand seen in the vaccine industry, challenges also arise in keeping up with the constant growing demand for products such as vegan food. As I aspire to become a specialist in chemical engineering, I am applying for this Masters as the first step on my career journey.

During my undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, for which I achieved a 2:1, I was able to select modules to cater to my interests, therefore studied materials and manufacturing and industrial management. These modules expanded upon the more basic principles introduced in the initial two years which allowed for a significant improvement to not only my technical skill but also the confidence in my ability to analyse and rectify mechanical failure. Through several of my core modules I developed my skills at utilising computer aided design (CAD) software packages such as SolidWorks for the design and analysis of products. For my final year project, I worked as project lead in a group to determine the advantages and disadvantages of additive manufacturing through the design and printing of a part. This allowed me to gain invaluable first-hand experience with fused deposition modelling machines and further refine my CAD skills, whilst developing excellent team management skills.

By the end of the second year of my degree, I knew my interests lay more towards chemical engineering and decided to undertake a placement year in industry. During this year I worked at a pharmaceutical company, adopting minor design roles within pre-existing projects and learning the importance of effective teamwork in producing a successful project. I attended several career fairs across universities and talked to students about the company, how best to apply and my experience working with them. This significantly improved my public speaking ability and communication skills, which are key for teamwork. I also gained some managerial experience during my free time as the president of the university running club. This involved planning and organising events, attending meetings with the student union and looking out for the welfare of members of the club.

I have applied to your university because of your excellent reputation in chemical engineering and am eager to study the specialist modules you have on offer, most notably pharmaceutical process development and advanced bioprocess engineering. On completion of my Masters I hope to pursue a career in industry and become a chartered engineer. This course would be an excellent opportunity to be at the forefront of chemical engineering technique development and to achieve a Masters accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

By joining the pharmaceutical sector or contributing to a company focused on enhancing human health through technology. I am adept at logical and creative thinking, seeking innovative solutions to seemingly insurmountable technical challenges. Experimenting with novel solutions and concocting mixtures brings me great joy. I am captivated by the subject of chemistry, especially the art of balancing intricate organic reactions. The transformation of alcohol to aldehydes and subsequently to carboxylic acids piques my interest. As I delve deeper into the study of methane and carbonyl compounds, I am eager to uncover more about the nature of chemical bonds.

Chemistry Review is my go-to magazine, and I recently came across a fascinating article on arsenic poisoning due to contaminated well water, which can lead to various cancers. This toxic metalloid can also be inhaled, posing extra risks. Such complex compounds ignited my scientific curiosity, inspiring me to learn more about them. I have a keen interest in all scientific fields and aspire to broaden my expertise, culminating in a PhD.

Fluent in three languages, I have maintained an exemplary academic record. In a globalized world, linguistic skills are crucial, particularly for professionals in the scientific community. Chemists hold the key to addressing pressing global challenges – such as overpopulation, energy scarcity, pollution, and health risks – necessitating international collaboration.

During my time in school, I eagerly participated in volunteer work. I spent several months in a charity shop, honing my communication skills and understanding the needs of others. Additionally, I volunteered at a kindergarten, where I learned the value of teamwork. Chemical Engineering Personal Statement Example

Ever since I was young, I have taken things apart just to see how they work inside. I am endlessly curious about the hidden mechanisms powering the world around me. Throughout my A-Levels , I have particularly enjoyed discovering how the sciences interconnect and build upon one another. Studying Chemical Engineering at university will allow me to apply my lifelong passion for understanding how things function to solve real-world problems and make a positive impact on society.

Chemistry has been one of my favourite A-level subjects because it provides mathematical insights into the unseen world of atoms and molecules. I was intrigued to learn about the Born-Haber cycle and how to calculate lattice energies based on the attractive forces between ions. It amazes me that such complex molecular interactions can be represented through simple mathematical relationships I already understand from Maths and Physics. I find great satisfaction in methodically working through problems, which will serve me well as an engineer.

My interest in Chemical Engineering stems largely from growing up in polluted urban India. Witnessing firsthand the environmental degradation caused by rapid industrialization made me want to be part of the solution. I am excited by the prospect of applying scientific principles to tackle issues like climate change and nuclear waste. I also appreciate the diversity of industries Chemical Engineering feeds into, from pharmaceuticals to petrochemicals. My AS Chemistry course has further sparked my interest, improving my practical skills and ability to study independently. Maths and Electronics A-Levels have also developed my numerical, analytical, planning and project management abilities.

In secondary school, I honed my teamwork and leadership skills in Young Enterprise and as a prefect mentoring younger students. As a peer counsellor, I cultivated strong listening abilities and attention to detail while guiding students struggling to fit in. Outside of school, I achieved second place in a Hindi speech competition, winning a 10-day tour of India where I met leaders across fields and visited landmarks like the Taj Mahal. Being multilingual in Konkani, Kannada, Hindi and English has enabled me to help classmates overcome language barriers too.

In my free time, I follow engineering news and magazines to stay up-to-date on the field’s latest developments. I also play competitive cricket, representing my school and local clubs. Team sports have taught me discipline, commitment and working effectively with others toward shared objectives. I hope to continue playing cricket at university and represent your institution.

Academically, I aim to read broadly beyond the curriculum. “Quantum Theory Can’t Hurt You” sparked my interest in quantum physics, while Dawkins’ “God Delusion” impressed me with its ability to break down complex ideas. I also try to be informed about current affairs. For example, a recent Economist article highlighted rising energy demands in developing countries. Studying Chemical Engineering would equip me to help create sustainable “green” technologies to address such pressing global issues.

My creative side has found expression through music. I began playing violin at five and expanded my skills on the viola and through ensemble work. Leading a “Checs group” I formed in 2004 taught me valuable leadership abilities. Making harmonious music requires understanding how each component complements the whole, which appeals to my collaborative spirit.

Balancing twelve hours weekly as a Waitrose cashier with studies has ingrained a strong work ethic and interpersonal skills that will aid an engineering career. Ultimately, my inquisitive mindset, passion for problem-solving and desire to make a positive impact make Chemical Engineering an ideal choice to fulfil my potential.

I am pursuing graduate education in chemical engineering because I want to work in a field that directly impacts society. I value practicality over abstraction, and engineering is ideal because it applies the concepts of math and science to real-world problems. A PhD program will allow me to pursue my research interests to a much greater depth while also expanding my future career opportunities. I hope to continue improving the teaching ability I have already developed in my past extensive tutoring and current biochemistry preceptorship. Finally, joining a community of likeminded individuals will be a valuable chance for collaboration and personal growth. 2

Having majored in Literary Studies (World Literature) as an undergraduate, I would now like to concentrate on English and American literature. I am especially interested in nineteenthcentury literature, women's literature, Anglo-Saxon poetry, and folklore and folk literature. My personal literary projects have involved some combination of these subjects. For the oral section of my comprehensive exams, I specialized in nineteenth century novels by and about women. The relationship between "high" and folk literature became the subject for my honors essay, which examined Toni Morrison's use of classical, biblical, African, and Afro-American folk tradition in her novel. I plan to work further on this essay, treating Morrison's other novels and perhaps preparing a paper suitable for publication. 1

Describing Experiences

On a personal level, these competitions helped me make friends all over the world, improved my confidence, and instilled in me a love of international travel. On an intellectual level, they exposed me to a wide variety of topics I would otherwise have never considered. I learned to think critically and examine an issue from multiple perspectives. I loved working past the rhetoric in my opponent’s speeches and pointing out flaws in their arguments. Sometimes I was given many months to prepare a topic, and sometimes I was only given two minutes. Whichever the case, I always had to be creative in developing and articulating my arguments. 3

I met Micah when I volunteered with Butterfly Dreams Farm Therapeutic Riding Program. Micah met the horses and was excited for his first ride, smiling brightly when he was placed in the saddle. I spoke to him gently and encouraged him to follow his therapist’s instructions. As the weeks passed, I kept speaking to Micah — describing the horse, giving words of encouragement, and saying his name often. One week, Micah responded to me. It was one of the few times Micah has ever spoken, as Micah is nonverbal. I am pursuing occupational therapy because of children like Micah.

Chemical engineering degree personal statement example (1i) work experience, Imperial offer

This is a real personal statement written by a student for their university application. It might help you decide what to include in your own. There are lots more examples in our collection of sample personal statements . 

Given its diverse and everchanging nature, and the opportunity to contribute to quality of life around the world, the field of engineering offers a very unique appeal. In particular, the chance to study the design of chemical reactions on a large scale is what has drawn me so much to Chemical Engineering, and since discovering the subject, I have found a number of reasons why I would particularly enjoy studying this course.

Firstly, the problem solving element to Chemical Engineering is one of the main attractions of the subject. Whilst undertaking a work placement at the engineering firm MottMacdonald, I worked on a problem faced by a team of water engineers designing a new pipeline, in which the steep gradient of the pipe would cause the fluid to travel at an excessively high velocity. Using only the most basic properties of fluids, the engineers were able to design an effective but very low-cost solution to this problem. Seeing all this, I could only imagine the range of solutions that could be implemented using more advanced Fluid Mechanics theory. Another topic I look forward to studying is Thermodynamics, an area I have been able to explore through watching a series of "Thermodynamics and Kinetics" lectures provided by MIT OpenCourseWare. The lectures covered various concepts relating to heat and work, and each of the Four Laws in turn. I greatly enjoyed the mathematical grounding of all these topics, and feel my ability and interest in maths would allow me to cope well with the highly mathematical nature of the course. However, above all, I enjoyed seeing how the fundamental theories of Chemical Engineering can be applied to create innovative solutions in industry.

Another driving factor for my desire to do the subject is the design element. I particularly like how the component steps of a chemical process - from delivering the reactant mixtures to heat exchange to waste disposal - all assemble together. The need to meet design requirements in an economical manner poses yet another challenge, along with the increasing importance of sustainable production. Integrating and resolving all these various elements into one single, functional process is what makes process engineering appeal to me so much. For these reasons, I am greatly looking forward to the final-year design project.

Furthermore, given my experience working in teams, I would be well-suited to team-oriented tasks such as the design project. Having completed a Headstart course at Newcastle University, and currently undertaking the Engineering Education Scheme, my ability to work well in teams in an engineering context has improved. I also recently set up a peer tutoring scheme at my school, which involved bringing together a team of academically able students to help out with other students struggling at their subjects. Whilst acting as a maths/sciences tutor myself, I was also responsible for managing the team, which included ensuring the tutors were keeping to the rota, collecting ideas and getting reports on tutoring sessions at which I was not present. Besides team activities, my interests also include music. I have achieved Grade 6 Piano and Grade 7 Violin so far, and I aim to achieve Grade 8 on both instruments over the upcoming year.

During my gap year, I will be participating in the Year in Industry. My aim is to improve my knowledge of the applications of engineering theory in industry and as a result be better able to understand how the concepts introduced in the course are used in real-world situations. From my current experience, Chemical Engineering appears an exciting field that I feel well-equipped to study, and one that I believe will be enjoyable, challenging, and above all, stimulating to undertake at university.

Chemical Engineering Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

From an early age I was interested in the science subjects and Mathematics. This was reflected in my academic achievements as I excelled in all three science subjects, Maths, and Design Technology.

I chose to study Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at GCSE and then took Chemistry and Physics on to A Level along with Maths and Further Maths. Having the opportunity to study these subjects confirmed my interest in the challenges of applying scientific theories to real life problems.

One area of Chemical Engineering that I am particularly interested in is nuclear power and the issues that arise with this technology, for example how to dispose of nuclear waste safely.

As well as achieving the required academic qualifications I have always tried to gain as much practical experience as I can. One opportunity that I had to improve my practical skills was during the week long REACT Engineering seminar held in July.

Working in a team we were able to apply our knowledge to a real life situation by completing an exercise based on a standard decommissioning project. This experience helped me to improve my understanding and skills in areas such as team work, time management, visual and oral presentation, and report writing.

Over the summer I hope to further these skills by taking part in e-learning courses run by IChemE that will develop my presentation skills and understanding of project management techniques.

Outside of my academic life I am a keen sportsperson as a regular runner and swimmer. Currently I am working towards my first half marathon and I hope to complete the London Marathon within the next two years.

I am also undertaking the work needed to achieve my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. I am thoroughly enjoying both the expedition aspect of the scheme and the volunteering opportunities.

I look forward to the new challenges that a degree in Chemical Engineering will bring and the broad range of career paths I will have open to me after graduation. The chance to contribute to society is a particularly appealing aspect of the course.

Chemical engineering personal statement example 12.

To me, Chemical Engineering is one of the most fundamental factors in underpinning how the world works.

Understanding the key chemical processes of nature is essential to development of new substances and creating products with financial value and for use of the whole population. Seeing how scientific theory is transferable to industry is something I find not only appealing, but intellectually stimulating.

Chemical Engineering would allow me to study the three areas I am most passionate about - Physics, Chemistry and Maths - as well as the diversity inherent in the sector making it a personally rewarding subject to study.

The problem solving aspect of Engineering particularly attracts me. Taking on a work placement with Centrica helped confirm this. I shadowed many process engineers within the company. This included work in the control room, line tracing with an P&ID, chemical testing, an in depth look at some processes with PFDs, meetings and observing and contributing to a project an engineer was working on.

Following reports from one terminal that their methanol water had increased in concentration, the objective was to find out why so much was being injected at various points along the line.

To help determine where the liquid was going, we asked for a sample to be taken from the lines coming out of the slug catcher (Natural Gas and Condensate). We concluded that if we took samples from these locations, it would be possible to deduce the concentrations and optimise the process.

Whilst completing the 2013 Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, where I gained a copper award, I was intrigued by the questions around the subject of "the horsemeat scandal" and decided to engage in further research.

The public was concerned because of the way the media portrayed the subject, implying that a drug in the meat could be harmful to humans.

It then emerged that an average person would have to eat 500 burgers to be seriously affected. This highlighted, for me, the importance of educating yourself before letting your views be swayed on a subject.

Due to this, I like to spend my free time investigating and learning about the aspects of science which are not taught in depth in the school's curriculum. Last year, I attended the annual European Astrofest conference and this year, the British Science Festival.

As well as the many lectures I saw, there was an opportunity afterwards to talk to people who are experts in their fields, which I found fascinating but also a unique experience.

Articles and other variations of media provided by universities and the various subject specific institutes are a device outside of my wider reading which have also helped ground me in areas of science and engineering that I may not have encountered otherwise.

At school, I was part of various sports teams including netball, hockey, tennis and rounders, but also involved with programmes organised by the PE department.

Having the chance to act as vice sports captain and a PE buddy has helped me with my physical skills, team work and organisation. I also completed a Junior Sports Leaders Award.

For this we worked in teams to plan and present lessons. These experiences helped me gain skills necessary to improve my public speaking, which inspired me to take on more roles within school, including student council, prefect, form mentor, foreign language leader, charity committee and Amnesty.

Language and communication are essential to every subject, but especially Chemical Engineering, which revolves around economics and the world markets.

With this in mind, I chose Mandarin Chinese as my enrichment subject.

Additionally, I am currently learning Beginners Dutch through a computer course, to add to the French and German skills I acquired while completing my GCSEs.

I strongly feel that the many experiences I already have, coupled with a keen and inquisitive nature, will help me with the plethora of knowledge I hope to gain during my studies to become a Chemical Engineer.

Prospective Students

Graduate students in the Chemical Engineering program are students of the  Rackham Graduate School . Our admissions process is handled through Rackham, but all applications are reviewed and admissions decisions are made by our departmental admissions committee.

A limited number of application fee waivers are available.  If you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or undocumented student with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) status with financial hardship, you may be eligible for a Chemical Engineering Graduate Program fee waiver.  Individual Fee waivers will be awarded based on a review of the individual  Fee Waiver Request .

If you meet the fee waiver criteria and would like to apply for a fee waiver, please submit your  Fee Waiver Request  by November 20.  Application fee waiver requests will not be considered unless requested at this link.

  • Statement of Purpose:  Statement about your academic and research background, your career goals, and how Michigan’s graduate program will help you meet your career and educational objectives).
  • Personal Statement:  This is not the Academic Statement of Purpose, but a discussion of the personal journey that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree.
  • General GRE scores:  GRE scores are no longer required.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation:  Letters from professors and especially research advisors are generally preferred. We prefer that these be submitted electronically via the online application. The system will accept just three letters, but additional recommendations may be mailed to the department. Mailed recommendation letters should be sent to the department and accompanied by the U-M recommendation form available through the  Rackham website .
  • Transcripts: Applicants will scan and upload an official transcript/academic record that displays the institutional seal and signature of the Registrar or Recorder of Records into the online application.
  • Applicants will enter a “self-reported” GPA.  Note:  International applicants will be directed to a third-party website that provides a tool for converting their grades and GPA to a U.S. 4.0 GPA equivalent scale.
  • Official electronic or paper transcripts/documents are  only required if a student is admitted , and these must be submitted by the end of the first term of enrollment.
  • Scholaro GPA calculation is required for international institutions (Scholaro GPA Calculator).  Instructions are included in the application. Failure to use the correct grading scale when calculating your GPA could lead to the reversal of an offer of admission.

The master’s degree under Option A requires a thesis. Option A is most appropriate for students who are preparing for careers in research and scholarly work or additional academic pursuits beyond the master’s degree. Under this option, a student must earn a minimum of 30 credit hours, consisting of 20 to 24 credit hours of regular course work, plus a thesis equivalent to 6 to 10 credit hours. At least one-half of the credit hours required for the degree, including thesis, must be in the major (at least 18 credit hours for the Master of Education degree). The remaining work may be in supporting courses and may comprise a minor consisting of at least 9 credit hours selected from and approved by the minor department. At least 8 credit hours, excluding thesis, must be earned in courses open exclusively to graduate students (900 level or 800 level without 400 or lower counterparts).

Option A is not available for the Master of Professional Accountancy degree.

Thesis Requirements . The subject of the thesis shall be chosen from the student’s field of major interest and must be approved by the departmental Graduate Committee. The thesis should reveal a capacity to carry on independent study or research and should demonstrate the student’s ability to use the techniques employed in their field of investigation. Research activities involving human subjects or live vertebrate animals may not be conducted at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln unless the research activities have been reviewed and approved by the appropriate board or committee. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews projects involving human subject research and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) reviews the use of animals in research. These reviews are in accordance with Federal regulations, state laws and institutional policies. Submission of protocols to conduct human subject or animal research is coordinated by the  Research Responsibility  offices. Approval must be secured prior to the initiation of the research.

The thesis must conform to the required style and format described in  Steps to Degree Completion . A copy of the thesis and abstract must be approved by the student’s major advisor and submitted for preliminary review to the Master’s Programs Coordinator in the Office of Graduate Studies at least two weeks (one week in the summer sessions) before the date of the candidate’s final oral examination. A candidate is not eligible for the oral examination until the thesis is completed and approved. After passing the final oral examination, the thesis must be electronically submitted to the Master’s Programs Coordinator for a final review prior to being uploaded to Digital Commons.

The master’s degree under Option B does not require a thesis. Option B is most appropriate for students pursuing practice-based or professional careers in which the master’s degree provides suitable training. Under Option B, a student must earn a minimum of 30 credit hours. At least one-half of the credit hours required for the degree must be in the major. Description

The chemical and biomolecular engineering faculty are actively involved in research related to biomolecular engineering, biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, polymers, composite materials, catalysis, and solid-phase reactions. Graduate coursework is offered in the advanced fundamentals of applied mathematics, chemical reaction kinetics, numerical methods, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, biomolecular engineering, and polymers.

The scope of chemical and biomolecular engineering work is far-reaching. Engineers are involved in a range of industries including manufacturing, healthcare, environmental health, and biotechnology. Graduates are among the highest-paid within engineering disciplines.
