Where to Find Resume Writing Help

Free online resume resources, american job centers, careeronestop resume guide, state resources for resume writing help, college career offices, public libraries, professional resume services, family, personal, and professional contacts.

If you're job hunting, few things are more important than a properly formatted, well-thought-out resume. Writing a resume can be a daunting task because you need to make sure you include all necessary information while keeping the document to a manageable size.

If you haven’t written a resume before, or haven’t updated yours in quite a while, getting started can be a challenge, but there are resources available that will assist you in writing an interview-winning resume for your job search.

Even if you've worked hard to write your resume, it’s helpful to have it reviewed by an objective and experienced professional.

There are numerous options available for getting help with your resume to ensure that the final draft will be looked at by prospective employers. You may be excellent at your job with the credentials to prove it, but if your resume doesn't shine, you may not be considered for the job.

Here’s a variety of resources you can use when you need help creating or updating your resume, so it’s comprehensive and competitive.

You may be able to write your resume yourself, using free online resources. At the least, you can create a draft that will help you get the process started. Our step-by-step guide for  how to write a resume  will walk you through the process, including choosing a type of resume, what to include, what to leave off, fonts, formatting, and templates and examples.

Many leading job sites have free online resume builders. Here’s a selection to try:

  • CakeResume: The Resume to Land Your Dream Job
  • Indeed: Easy and Free Online Resume Builder
  • Jobscan: Free Resume Builder ATS-Approved
  • Resume.com: Build a Professional Resume for Free

There are many other sites with online resume builders , but not all are actually free to use. Some resume sites charge for premium access, templates, downloads, and other resources.

Before you use an online resume builder, read the fine print to be sure you can actually save and download the resume you created for free. Some sites let you create a resume, but then charge you to access it.

American Job Centers offer in-person and virtual job search assistance at locations around the country. Use CareerOneStop’s  American Job Center Finder  to find local assistance.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s CareerOneStop site has a  Resume Guide  that includes a guide for what to include in your resume, templates and samples, and tips for writing and formatting your resume.

Most state department of labor websites offers free resume writing services for employees, the unemployed, those returning to the workplace, and military veterans. Local government websites will likely also offer sample resumes, sample cover letters, interview tips, and other pertinent information helpful for your job search.

Some department of labor offices offer virtual workshops you can attend to get help with writing your resume and with your job search. Check with your  state labor department  to see what’s available in your location.

If you're a college student (or alumnus) the career services office at your school or alma mater may be able to help you write your resume or provide you with useful feedback. The staff in a career office has a lot of experience helping professionals, as well as recent graduates, and they know how to polish a resume to make it stand out.

They are also familiar with hiring managers, how managers scan resumes, and the resume software used by employers. These career counselors can also provide guidance regarding the best way to format your resume and the best keywords to use to set you apart from the competition.

Many libraries offer programs and workshops for job seekers, as well as resume writing help and computer access. Check your local library to learn about what assistance is available in your location.

Use  CareerOneStop’s Library Finder  to find libraries and contact information so you can check on available services.

It may not seem worth it to spend money on a resume service, especially if you are unemployed and on a tight budget, but your resume is your first impression before you even get the interview. For a fee,  professional resume writing services  will either write your resume for you or edit the one you have.

Compose a draft of your resume and seek feedback from family members, friends, college alumni, and other professionals who have experience screening job candidates.

An added benefit of this strategy is that your contacts might develop an appreciation of your assets as a prospective employee and refer you for jobs.

What types of resume help are available?

Anyone can create a resume, but to create a truly outstanding document that shows off your best qualifications and experiences takes a little extra. Here’s how expert resume help can move your resume to the top of the yes pile.

1. Get help finding resume examples in your industry

With career searches today, there is no reason to write a resume from scratch. Industry-specific resume examples are available for reference and a great source of resume help. Resume examples , like the hundreds found on ResumeHelp, are a great jump start to creating your resume. Not only are they specifically geared for your industry and job title, but they also show you how to effectively highlight your best hard skills and soft skills, job experience, certifications and education. These resume samples also provide help with choosing the ideal resume format to match your job level and industry.

2. Use a professional resume template

Instead of building a resume from scratch, or going through numerous designs to figure out how to make your resume look good, select a professional design template that reflects your job or industry. The right template can give your resume the right style and personality. From traditional layouts to more creative designs, our resume templates allow you to match your resume to the right professional style.

3. Get help creating a perfectly formatted resume

If you are unsure about the different resume formats and how to format your resume effectively, resume help is available. Our resume format guides thoroughly explain the three resume formats ( chronological , functional and combination ) and how to use them.

Whichever resume format matches your job role, career level and industry, you also need resume help selecting the right font, one that will make your resume visually appealing. Use our font guide to help you select an easy-to-read font like Helvetica, Cambria, Calibri or Verdana. Use one font consistently throughout your resume in a 10 or 12 point font size.

We also provide resume help when it comes to writing each section of your document:

  • Resume contact information including phone number, email address and links to professional profiles such as LinkedIn.
  • Professional Summary for Resume with two to three sentences showcasing your background and top qualifications.
  • Relevant skills including hard skills and soft skills .
  • Past work experience listed as bullet points, also including any applicable internships and volunteer work.
  • Certifications for your industry and required to perform the job role.
  • An education section that includes your key school information, including your major, specialized studies and any honors.

4. Get your resume past the applicant tracking system (ATS)

For every resume that you submit, you must seek resume help to optimize for applicant tracking systems (ATS). ATS is software that scans incoming applications to take the burden off busy hiring managers and recruiters. The ATS is programmed to scan for specific keywords related to the job description and select only qualified job candidates. The ATS can reject unqualified resumes before they even get read by the employer. To optimize your resume for ATS, read the job description carefully for specific skills and qualifications. These are the keywords you should address in your summary, skills and work experience sections.

5. Get help proofreading your resume

Now that you have devoted your time to crafting the perfect resume, don’t get complacent and submit your resume without properly proofreading it. Don’t solely rely on spell check. This is a great time to ask for resume help from a colleague, friend or family member who can review your document with an objective eye. In your proofreading, be on the lookout for typos, grammatical errors, capitalization, bolding, indents, fonts and other potential formatting issues — or simply create a resume using our Resume Builder , or upload an existing resume into the builder, and our tools can do a check for you.

Resume help: 5 resume mistakes to avoid

Missing important resume keywords.

Each resume you submit along with a job application must be tailored to the job role that you’re applying for. The reason? You need to include keywords directly from the job posting into your resume that will help get your resume effectively scanned by the applicant tracking system. Busy recruiters will have the ATS quickly scan incoming resumes to be on the lookout for these keywords. If the keywords are missing from your resume, your resume will not get advanced into the qualified group of job candidates.

Unrelated resume summary, skills and work experience

In addition to tailoring your resume to match the job role description, you also must be sure that you are only including relevant experience on your resume. If your resume summary or objective is irrelevant to the advertised position, the hiring manager will deem you as unqualified. Take a good look at the job description that you are applying to and list only relevant work experience and skills. This allows the potential employer to see that you could be an asset to their organization.

Resumes that are too long or too short

Resume length is a simple resume mistake to avoid. It’s advised that you only list experience from the past 10 to 15 years and keep your document to one full page. This gives a busy hiring manager ample time to read the resume in full and deem a job candidate qualified.

While a one-page resume is ideal, a job candidate with extensive and impressive work experience should not simply cram everything into one page. You don’t want to risk leaving off some critical work history that could make you stand out from other job candidates.

On the other hand, you also don’t want to create a resume that is too brief. A resume that doesn’t fill one page is an indication that a job candidate is not qualified.

Outdated contact information

Imagine if the company you applied to cannot contact you for an interview? It would not only be a missed opportunity but it will also show you lack the “detail oriented” skill. Avoid this resume mistake by seeking help from a friend or family member to proofread your contact information. Confirm that you’re listing your current phone number, email address and location. Also, verify that the links to your job networking profiles such as LinkedIn, are working.

A visually distracting layout

With one chance for your resume to make a good first impression on a prospective employer, you want to be sure that your resume is easy to read and professional looking. Avoid flashy colors and unprofessional fonts. Choose a 10 or 12 point font like Calibri, Cambria, Times New Roman or Arial with 1.15 line spacing. Set the margins evenly, approximately one inch on all sides. Resume heading sections should be bolded. Unless you’re applying for a job where a resume photo is required, do not include a photo on your resume. Some hiring managers will consider a photo unprofessional.

Get the ultimate in resume help with our tools

Whether you’re  just starting out in your career or it’s time to search for your next job, you want to create a resume that stands out among the competition. One of the most efficient ways to get resume help is from a career resource tool called a “resume builder.” It takes writing a resume from scratch to a whole new level.

What is a resume builder ?

The ResumeHelp Resume Builder quickly and easily leads you step-by-step through the creation process. By answering simple questions, you are actually filling in the requested resume information. Before your eyes, you will see a professional resume jump off the page.

Getting help from this proven successful resume writing tool allows you to create an eye-catching professional resume that is guaranteed to capture the attention of your hiring managers.

A resume builder gives you direct access to job-specific sample resumes which you can draw inspiration from. Numerous resume templates are available in each of the standard resume formats , including chronological resumes, functional resumes and combination resumes. With the wide variety of templates, you can build your resume with your own unique style.

Using a resume builder saves you the time that you would otherwise spend trying to come up with a complete resume from ground zero and also helps you craft a professional ATS-friendly resume to help land you a job interview. A resume builder formats a resume that can be easily scanned by applicant tracking systems.

FAQ: Tools for job seekers from ResumeHelp

Have questions? We’re here to help.

How much does it cost to have someone write your resume?

If you hire a professional resume writer, you could pay up to hundreds of dollars from the initial draft through the editing process. Also keep in mind that you should tailor each resume for the specific job that you are applying for so additional versions will cost more. Build a resume free of charge with ResumeHelp’s resume builder . Your free trial allows you to write the perfect resume, change templates, colors and edit your wording to match the job description for the job you are applying for.

Where can I find someone to help me with my resume?

Networking is a great way to find someone to help with your resume. You will not only get an objective opinion but you’ll get great advice from someone in your chosen professional and industry. You can ask current or former colleagues, professors, mentors or a job recruiter.

Can I outsource my resume writing?

Yes. If you’re applying for a new job and aren’t confident about your resume writing skills, you can outsource the task to a third party for professional resume writing services. If you’re in college, you might be able to get some help from career services or hire a freelance resume writer to help you write a winning resume. You can also take advantage of the resume builder from ResumeHelp to create a compelling resume.

What are the 3 most common mistakes for resumes?

Three of the most common resume mistakes are the following:

Typos, punctuation errors and grammatical mistakes are the most obvious mistakes that will get you recognized as a job candidate who doesn’t pay attention to detail. These mistakes could result in your resume discarded, thereby eliminating any chance of a job interview.

Using one resume for all job applications is a common mistake. A generic resume will not help you stand out from the competition. Tailor each resume to the specific job description to show you made extra effort to show your qualifications.

If you fail to complement your resume with a cover letter , you’re missing out on an opportunity to expand on the career highlights in your resume. A cover letter allows you to present a glimpse into your personality to show who you are and why you’re a good fit for the job role. Our Cover Letter Builder will make the writing process easier.

What are the benefits of having a resume?

A professional resume highlights your career summary, work history, skills and education. At a glance, this document shows a hiring manager that you are the ideal candidate for the job you are applying for. Since most resumes must pass through applicant tracking systems (ATS) before being seen by a hiring manager, a good resume will target what the employer is looking for, including keywords that match the qualifications and requirements listed in the job description.

What is the ideal length of a resume?

Your resume should be one page long. This is because hiring managers typically have only a few seconds to do a resume review for each application that they receive. For this reason, it’s critical to make sure your resume is as concise as possible and contains only the most relevant information. That said, if you have extensive experience, relevant achievements or certifications that are pertinent to the position that you’re applying for, it’s okay to include a second page.

What sections should my resume have?

The main sections that you should include in your resume include a header with your contact information, resume summary or objective, skills, work experience and education. Depending on the resume format that you select, the order and length of these resume sections will vary. See our resume formats guide for more tips.

What should I do with my resume?

When your resume is written and proofread carefully, it is time to submit it. You want to get your resume into the hands of hiring managers and recruiters so you can land the job you want. Here are a few resume submission ideas:

1. Submit your resume to multiple job boards so you’ll gain online presence from as many potential employers, recruiters and hiring managers globally. Simply complete the profiles and post your resume to those online boards.

2. Print out several copies of your resume and bring it to job fairs . You can hand deliver your resume to the job fair companies that you are interested in working for. In addition, it’s a great way to introduce yourself to hiring managers and recruiters.

3. Email your resume to former colleagues, alumni or mentors in your field as a way of networking. You never know when someone will provide you with a lead about a job opening.

What to Say When Emailing a Resume (with Examples)

10 min read · Updated on June 12, 2024

Jen David

Introduce yourself professionally when you email your resume

You've written the perfect resume and tailored it to the role you're aspiring to. What should you do next? A few years back, you'd have printed it off on some quality paper, addressed an envelope in your best handwriting, posted it off, and settled in to wait for a response. These days, though, it's more common to email your resume. It's faster, it's more professional, and it's easier to share a file than a printout.

But if you're going to email your resume, what should you say? Should you attach a cover letter? How much detail should you include?

So many questions!

But fear not, TopResume is here to help you decide what to say when emailing a resume, and we have answers to all these questions and more. Settle in as we guide you through it.

Should I email my resume?

Yes! It's absolutely fine to email your resume when you apply for a job. In fact, it's usually preferred to printed correspondence these days. Of course, the most important point is that you should follow the instructions on the job posting. If it requests a printed resume or a resume uploaded via an online portal, you should definitely apply in line with those instructions. However, if there are no specific instructions, an email application is advisable. Just make sure you're addressing it to the right person!

General rules for emailing your resume

Before we get into the specifics, let's refresh on some general guidelines for emailing your resume to a company. After all, first impressions count, so using proper email etiquette is important.

Use a professional email address. “ HotLips69@...” may have seemed cool and funny when you set up the account, but does it really convey that you're a credible professional? If necessary, set up a new email account to use for job applications – and remember to check it regularly for responses!

Add a clear subject line. Make the point of your email clear with a logical  subject line – you could include the job title of the vacancy you're applying for, for example, or refer to the fact that the email is a job application or resume.

Choose a professional greeting. Think “Dear [name],” or even just “[name],” rather than “Hiya” or “Greetings.” While email is less formal than a letter, you still need to keep the tone professional.

Be concise. Short,  snappy paragraphs are easier to read on a screen, and no one wants to trudge through pages of waffle to find the information they need. Respect the reader's time by keeping it simple.

Add a formal sign-off. A version of “thank you” and your name is sufficient – you may also want to add your professional title, a contact number, and a link to your portfolio if you have one.

Don't forget the attachments! Make sure that you've actually attached your resume (and your cover letter, if required). Ensure they have sensible file names, too: “Jay Miller – Resume” or “J Miller – Sales Executive Resume” is more professional and easier to retrieve than something like “JM 010224 v3” or simply “Resume.” Also, double-check the file type that you're sending – check out our article  Word vs PDF  if you're not sure.

What to say when emailing your resume – the detail

So now we've reviewed the basics of email etiquette, let's get down to business. You need to know what to say when emailing a resume. Well, the exact wording will vary depending on the situation, the role, and your personality, but you'll certainly need to include the following:

Why you're emailing

Your reader may have a ton of open vacancies and is likely to receive many resumes for each one. Make their life easier by clearly stating the role you're interested in applying for. If you have a reference number for the vacancy, you can include that too.

Your elevator pitch

Briefly explain who you are , what you do, and why you're the right person for the open role. This doesn't need to take up a lot of space or be very detailed – the key thing here is to be convincing enough for them to want to open your resume document to find out more. Include whatever information is most pertinent to the role – that could be your academic qualifications, your industry experience, awards and accolades, or particular skills. Refer to the job posting to find out what the company wants to see in a successful candidate and ensure the requirements are reflected in your email.

A call to action

Encourage the reader to open your resume, reach out with further questions, or schedule an interview. This one little line can show your enthusiasm for the role, emphasize your professionalism, and prompt your reader to take the next step in progressing your application.

What to say when emailing a resume – sample messages

Do you need a bit more inspiration to craft your message? Take a look at these sample emails and use them as a frame for your own resume email. Remember, the job advert is your cheat sheet when it comes to deciding what details to prioritize here.

What to say when cold emailing a resume

To: Katie French

From: Matthew Cole

Subject: Sales resume

I've long admired XYZ Inc. as a leading supplier of home tech solutions and have heard many positive reviews about your company as an employer. To that end, I am attaching my resume in the event that a sales vacancy may soon arise.

As you can see, I have enjoyed a successful 10-year career in technology sales and am a committed user and advocate of your products. This year, I am on track to exceed my sales target by 46%. I would bring an extensive network of industry contacts and a proven ability to motivate sales teams to surpass expectations.

If there are no suitable vacancies at the moment, please feel free to keep my resume on file for future reference. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Matthew Cole

What to say when emailing a resume in response to a job posting

Subject: Sales Executive vacancy (Ref: ABC123)

In response to your advertisement for a Sales Executive, I am attaching my resume. As you can see, I combine eight years of sales experience with a degree in Marketing and three awards for excellence in sales roles.

The advertised role is particularly interesting to me, as it will allow me to leverage my expertise in technical sales, provide the opportunity for international growth, and establish trusted relationships with your clients to open new avenues for revenue and increased sales.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions; I look forward to discussing my suitability further with you at an interview.Thank you for your consideration,

Sales Executive, Acme Products

What to say when emailing a resume to a recruiter

Subject: Healthcare Roles

Dear Katie,

I saw on JobBoard.com that you are recruiting for several healthcare roles, and would like to submit my resume for your consideration. I combine 10 years' experience as a Healthcare Assistant with numerous industry certifications and consistently receive positive patient feedback.

I look forward to hearing from you,

What to say when emailing a resume to follow up on a conversation

Subject: Finance Manager follow-up

Following our phone discussion earlier today, I would like to reiterate my interest in the Finance Manager position and attach my resume for your consideration.

As you can see, I am currently fulfilling the Finance Manager role at XYZ Company and am looking forward to developing my career within a global organization. I have a master's degree in Business Administration, as well as extensive experience in managing the finance function within a security business. I look forward to bringing my leadership skills to your team of finance experts.

Please reach out to me at 555-555-5555 when you have had a chance to review my attached resume.Regards,

Finance Manager, XYZ Company

What to say when emailing a resume following a referral

Subject: Events Manager vacancy

Dear Ms French,

Please find attached my resume. I have been referred to the Events Manager position by one of your colleagues, John Day, who I previously worked with at ABC Inc. Having delivered many successful events with John as my manager, I'm flattered that he has now asked me to apply for your open role.

I've recently delivered a conference for 800 international delegates and a team building event for 5 national teams, both of which were very well received and were completed within challenging budgets. I am confident that I can bring a similar level of client satisfaction to DEF Inc. and look forward to discussing the position further with you.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch to schedule an interview at your convenience,

555-555-5555

Should you attach a cover letter when emailing a resume?

Now we've covered what to say when emailing a resume, it's time to consider the cover letter. As you can see, we recommend that the body of the email be kept short and concise. If you feel the need to include more detail, you can consider attaching a cover letter as well as a resume. There's no obligation to do this unless a letter is specifically requested as part of the application instructions, but it does give you the opportunity to expand on key points of interest.

Top tip: You may like to read our article on  how to write a cover letter to make sure you get this part of your application bang on!

How long does it take to hear back after emailing a resume?

Don't panic if you don't hear back immediately! While email is a speedy way to apply, recruiters and hiring managers receive many resumes for every open role and need time to sift through them, create shortlists, and schedule interviews. That said, certain recruiters have a reputation for ghosting unsuitable candidates, or your application may simply have been overlooked, so there's no harm in following up after a week or two if you haven't heard anything.

What to write in a follow-up email

Subject: Communications Assistant vacancy (ref: 12345)

I emailed my resume to you last week in response to your advertisement for a Communications Assistant. I just wanted to check that you'd received it, and to reiterate that I remain very interested in the role.

If you didn't receive the resume or have further questions regarding my application, please do get in touch with me either via email or by phone at 555-555-5555.

Email with confidence

Now you know what to say when emailing your resume in any situation, you're ready to apply for your dream job! Use this checklist to make sure you've nailed it before you hit the send button:

“Help Me Find a Job!” Emails to Send to Your Network

person with laptop

You’ve updated your resume, perfected your LinkedIn profile , and homed in on your target positions. And now, you’re ready to reach out to your network .

Which, let’s be honest, can be sort of daunting. Who do you reach out to? Where do you start? And, um, isn’t it sort of awkward asking people for help?

Here’s the thing: People are actually always willing to help out. But you can make their job easier—and get better results—if you give specifics about what you’re asking for. And that’s the step that most people miss: asking the right people for the right things, in the right way.

So to make sure you get the most bang for your job search buck, we’ve put together a five-step plan—sample emails included—for enlisting the help of your network as you're looking for a job.

Step 1: Draft Your Talking Points

At this point, you’ve (hopefully) updated your resume , but people will find it much easier and quicker to look at a short, bulleted list of where you’ve been and where you want to go (especially if they’re not totally familiar with your field). This should take no more than 10 minutes to pull together, but it will reap serious rewards.

In it, you should include:

A list of your last three position titles, companies you’ve worked for, and responsibilities. Think your resume, but condensed into three bullets.

Your ideal job title and function, as well as other job titles and functions you’d consider.

A list of 4-5 companies you’d love to work for, plus their locations.

Work Experience

  • Account Executive, Smith PR: Served as main point of contact for tech clients including Microsoft
  • Account Coordinator, APCO Worldwide: Assisted on high-profile consumer products campaigns
  • PR Assistant, Columbia University: Drafted press releases that resulted in media coverage in the New York Times

Positions Seeking

  • Senior Account Executive
  • Account Supervisor
  • Public Relations Manager

Dream Companies

  • Edelman, San Francisco or Mountain View
  • Ogilvy, San Francisco
  • Ketchum, San Francisco or Silicon Valley
  • Google, San Francisco or Mountain View

Step 2: Send the Mass Email

Your next step is to contact everyone in your network. (Well, everyone except your mentors, former bosses or colleagues who you’re close to, and anyone who works for your dream companies. We’ll get to that next.)

Draft an email sharing that you’re looking for a new gig, and that you’re enlisting their help. Most importantly: Be specific about what you’re asking for—is it job leads or postings? Informational interviews ? New contacts? All of the above?

Also include all the details about you: your current position and company, the length of time you’ve been there, and what you’re looking for and where. Even if your friends know this information, this email may be passed around to people who don’t know you well. Finally, include your bulleted talking points at the end of the email, and attach your resume.

Hi friends and colleagues,

I hope all is well!

As many of you know, I have been at my current position as Account Executive for Smith PR for almost 3 years. I have recently decided to look for a new challenge in the public relations field and am reaching out to you to ask for your help with any leads or contacts.

I am looking for a mid-level public relations position in San Francisco, ideally in the tech or consumer products field. I am particularly interested in joining an agency, but would also consider interesting in-house work.

If you know of any job opportunities or leads that you might be able to share with me, please send them my way. Below, I have included a list of my past experience, my target positions, and my list of dream companies. I have also attached my resume for your reference, and feel free to pass it along.

Thanks in advance for your help! I hope you all are doing well and hope to catch up with you individually soon.

Step 3: Send Targeted Emails

The same day (this is important—you don’t want anyone to feel like an afterthought), craft targeted, specific emails to your former bosses, your mentors, people who work at your dream company, or anyone who you think might be able to help you out in a specific way.

You’ll want to personalize each one (there’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re getting a form letter with your name slapped up top!). And most importantly, you’ll want to make a specific request—more specific than your mass email—about how each person might be able to help you. Don’t be afraid to ask for specific introductions or job leads at a particular company. You can also ask for informational interviews, general advice on companies and positions, or feedback on your resume.

I hope all is well! I saw the photos of the conference you held last month on Facebook—it looked like a fantastic event.

I’m reaching out because I’m currently seeking a new position. As you know, I have been Smith PR for almost three years, but I’m ready for a new challenge in the tech PR world.

I know that you used to do work for Ogilvy, which is on my short list of dream companies. Do you still have any contacts there, and if so, is there someone that might be willing to do an informational interview with me? Any introductions you could make would be greatly appreciated.

In addition, if you know of any job opportunities or leads that you might be able to share with me, please send them my way. I’ve attached my resume for your reference, and feel free to pass it along.

Thanks in advance for your help! Please keep me posted on how things are going and if there’s anything I can do to return the favor.

Step 4: Be Patient

In an ideal world, your inbox would be filled with new job leads two hours later—but remember that this stuff takes time. Even if people can’t help out right away, rest assured that they’re keeping their eyes out and that you’ll be on their radar if any opportunities come their way.

That said, if you haven’t received many responses in a month or so, it can be helpful to send a follow-up email. (A friendly, non-desperate follow-up email . One.)

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for the great leads and feedback you’ve sent so far. I just wanted to update you that I’m still searching for that perfect opportunity, so if you have any leads come your way, please pass them along. I hope all is well!

Step 5: Say Thanks

You must, must, must send a personal reply and thank every single person who responds to your email or offers to help you out, whether or not his or her lead or contact is helpful in your job search. Yes, people are happy to help, but they also like to know that their efforts are appreciated.

Plus, remember: After you land this dream job, you may be enlisting their help again a few years down the line.

How to Use ChatGPT to Find the Job of Your Dreams

AI can do more than help you write a cover letter and resume -- it can also strategize with you on how to find your ideal job.

where to find someone to help me with my resume

It's a hard time to be on the job hunt. Job posts are inundated with responses and hundreds of applicants. You know you have to put in the work to stand out, but it's easy to get disillusioned with mass, generic automated rejections, fake job ads and ghosting culture.

AI Atlas art badge tag

Take a breath and turn to new tools to help you land a job you love. Create your resume and a custom cover letter and curate your job search, all with the help of artificial intelligence.

AI tools are being used in HR to streamline an otherwise arduous process. While new solutions are being rolled out to the market, there's a lot to like about ChatGPT . It's a catch-all tool for creating your documents, a research aid and a career "counselor." Just know that, like a lot of AI chatbots, it requires smart prompts from you, which can mean some trial and error.

You can sign up for an account to use a free version of ChatGPT or pay $20 a month for more features like the most recent data, priority access and image generation.

Here's how to get hired with a little helping hand from AI -- and if you're looking for more ways to use AI, check out our pieces on  how to use Midjourney to make wedding invitations  and  how to use AI-powered Grammarly for all your editing needs . For more AI tips, news and reviews, check out CNET's AI Atlas hub.

Tell ChatGPT about yourself

Give it your elevator pitch -- the rundown on your career, experience, ambitions and values. I'm a journalist, but the same processes apply regardless of your field.

Prompt:  "I'm a [career] and have worked at [previous companies]. My top skills are [XYZ] and my aspirations are [1, 2, 3]. Can you suggest job roles, company types and career paths that best align with my experience and goals?"

Here's what I input:

Job Hunting ChatGPT

It came back with detailed results on some job roles, company types and career paths to target, such as prestigious publications, media companies and publishing houses, think tanks and startups.

Feed it your resume

To get even more specific, input your resume into ChatGPT. Just be sure to remove sensitive information you don't want in the AI, such as your contact details to  avoid any future data breaches  or unnecessary risk.

Prompt: "Here is my resume. Provide further suggestions."

This time, it provided (without prompting) advice for enhancing my career, as well as even more detailed suggestions for roles and career paths. But I wanted even more specific direction.

Job Suggestions ChatGPT 1-1

Ask for advice

Given I've been a freelancer for 10 years -- working as a reporter for publications and writer for brands -- I wanted to know where ChatGPT thought I'd be most successful.

I asked: "What is the strongest part of my resume? Will I have more success applying for reporter or copywriter positions?"

While I have a solid decade of corporate writing experience, ChatGPT knew I'd find more fulfillment with a reporter position, particularly cultural criticism. It made suggestions on the strengths and opportunities I'd have applying for each kind of role, and it gave an overall recommendation.

For even more specificity, I added: "Joan Didion is my career inspiration." In response, ChatGPT inserted a summary of Didion and peppered mentions of her throughout its suggestions of jobs, companies and careers, briefly explaining how they related to her career.

Here's part of what it suggested:

Job Suggestions Didion ChatGPT 1-1

Generate a list of top companies to target

Next, I scanned through everything ChatGPT had said so far, highlighting the roles or recommendations I liked. Then, I fed it back into ChatGPT and asked it what top companies I should reach out to, adding in where I'm based.

Prompt: "I'm most interested in roles such as senior journalist, feature writer, cultural critic, head of editorial, editorial director, content director, and chief content officer. What top 30 companies should I target for a new job? I live in the New York City area, but I work remotely."

It gave me a lot of information, but no new ideas for companies to target. I responded: "Provide a secondary list of 30 companies that aren't so big and might be easier to get a job at."

The results were better, with suggestions split into categories for mid-sized and smaller publications, specialized and niche publications, and regional and local Publications. It also gave me strategies on how to apply at those publications, including leveraging my network, showcasing my versatility, writing tailored pitches and emphasizing my portfolio.

A message to recruiters

I picked 10 companies from ChatGPT's list and then asked it to write a message to a recruiter to introduce myself and express my interest.

Prompt:  "Write a short message to the recruiter at the following five companies to introduce myself and express my interest: Narratively, Longreads, Mother Jones, Salon and The Cut."

It came back with a pretty generic suggestion, so I pushed ChatGPT further: "For the Narratively message, remove the generic intro and mention the previous reporting I've done on the corporatization of LGBTQ+ fertility, expatriatism and cultural fragmentation."

Narratively suggestion

I tweaked it a bit to sound more natural and like me, which is the version I'll tell ChatGPT to use for the other four messages.

Once you have your polished messages, send to the best contact via LinkedIn DM or email -- it might be worth using LinkedIn Premium during your job search.

Use this strategy to directly target employers, personalizing your application approach and bypassing the job boards.

Election latest: Labour to return ÂŁ100,000 in donations after joining Tories in election gambling scandal

A former Tory candidate who was dropped for betting on the date of the election has vowed to clear his name, as the Labour Party and more police officers also become embroiled in the escalating scandal.

Returning to the gambling scandal, former Tory MP Tim Loughton says anyone involved "should have the book thrown at them, frankly just for them being pretty dumb".

"It just looks really, really stupid," he says.

He explains that suspending anyone is effectively a death sentence for potentially innocent candidates standing in elections, and that Rishi Sunak waiting for an investigation before doing so wasn't a bad idea.

"It was right to look at it properly," he adds - but reiterates that it doesn't look good for anyone involved.

Tory peer Baroness Nicky Morgan is asked by  Sophy Ridge  if the campaigning is all but pointless - with the only Conservative aim to avoid Labour winning a so-called "supermajority".

"In my book, you never give up until 10pm on polling night," she says, noting occasions where final votes on election night have made the difference.

"I don't think the British public would want a government to have a huge majority," she adds.

"I don't think it's good for democracy, for holding a government to account."

She concedes that after 14 years it "was always going to be a battle" to convince the public for a further five.

On the recent gambling scandal, she says: "The more you're talking about things like betting, the less you're talking about the issues that people really want to hear about."

Four men have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass at the prime minister's constituency home in Kirby Sigston, North Yorkshire Police has said.

A statement said: "We have arrested four people in the grounds of the prime minister's constituency home this afternoon.

"Our officers were with the four men within one minute of them entering the grounds.

"They were detained at around 12.40pm before being escorted off the property and arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass.

"The men aged 52 from London, 43 from Bolton, 21 from Manchester, and 20 from Chichester, remain in police custody for questioning and enquiries are ongoing."

Baroness Nicky Morgan, the former Tory education secretary, has said the time spent talking about the betting scandal is "frustrating" in the midst of a general election campaign.

The Conservatives today withdrew support for two candidates over informed betting on the date of the election, while Labour suspended a candidate for betting against himself.

Baroness Morgan told Sophy Ridge : "It's clearly been a very difficult couple of weeks, and I'm on record of having said I wished the prime minister had taken a decision sooner.

"I think the right decision has been taken today and I understand that Conservative HQ checked with the Gambling Commission before announcing to make sure that their action wasn't going to prejudice any investigations.

"Unfortunately these kinds of stories, because they are relatively simple to understand… people of course will internalise this and think 'Hang on a second, is this what I want to vote for?'.

"This is an election campaign, there are serious issues facing the country and facing the world.

"The time spent talking about these issues is frustrating for those, including the prime minister, who want to talk about the bigger issues."

Our chief political correspondent  Jon Craig   is here to break down the day's betting scandal events.

He begins with the Tories.

"For days and days and days both [Rishi Sunak] and senior ministers like James Cleverly have been saying, 'oh, we can't talk about it' - well that hasn't worked," he says.

"Craig Williams, he's not going to go away quietly," he adds, noting the candidate for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr's "defiant" message on X, which you can watch here .

He also notes that postal votes have already been going in in the midst of this scandal - meaning slow Tory action could already be directly impacting the polls

Jon next turns to Labour.

A reminder that in the last few hours, a Labour candidate has been suspended by the party after betting against himself - with the Gambling Commission launching an investigation into him.

"So Labour have [also been] dragged into this, it's not good is it?" he asks.

"If a footballer or a cricketer did this, the authorities would probably throw the book at them.

"All this betting, it's exposed quite a sleazy side of politics."

Campaigns can change things.

When Rishi Sunak decided to call an early election when he was 20 points behind in the polls, I'm sure that's the argument he and those around him were making.

And usually, as an election approaches, the polls narrow in favour of the governing party.

But that is not the overall narrative of this campaign.

There are two big clues we have about the way a campaign is going.

The first is the polls, the second is the seats each party is visiting.

Rishi Sunak was in true blue Chelsea yesterday, a Tory seat with a majority topping 10,000.

He's visited eight seats with Conservative majorities of over 20,000, and The Guardian reports the party has been re-routing resources to defend three seats held by ministers with similarly huge advantages.

As for Labour, analysis from the Financial Times says they're directing activists away from Lib Dem target seats.

That implies both parties are focusing on unseating Conservatives rather than taking votes off each other.

This is the business end of the campaign - and organisation matters.

Amid a flurry of betting revelations surrounding the election, a former minister has admitted putting money on the result of the 2016 EU referendum.

Ex-Brexit secretary David Davis claimed there were "times when it's appropriate enough" to gamble.

He told BBC Radio 4 he bet on that vote eight years ago because he was "annoyed that people said we were going to lose".

Mr Davis said his vote "wasn't improper", but said the allegations surrounding this election would likely be "terminal" for the careers of those implicated.

The Tories have suspended two candidates - Craig Williams and Laura Sanders - for betting on the date of the election, while Labour have suspended candidate Kevin Craig for betting against himself.

Kevin Craig has apologised for the "huge mistake" he made in betting against himself to win the seat in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich.

The Labour candidate has been suspended from the party pending an investigation.

In a statement posted on social media, Mr Craig explained that he has "enjoyed the odd bet for fun whether on politics or horses" throughout his life.

He adds: "A few weeks ago when I thought I would never win this seat I put a bet on the Tories to win here with the intention of giving any winnings to local charities.

"While I did not place this bet with any prior knowledge of the outcome, this was a huge mistake, for which I apologise unreservedly.

"I have so much respect for how Keir Starmer has changed the Labour Party and I have been fighting so hard to win this seat and change the country alongside him.

"However, it is right that the party upholds the highest standards for its parliamentary candidates - just as the public expects the highest standards from any party hoping to serve in government."

The other candidates in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich are:

  • Charlie Caiger, independent;
  • Tony Gould, Reform UK;
  • Mike Hallatt, independent;
  • Brett Alistair Mickelburgh, Lib Dems;
  • Dan Pratt, Greens;
  • Patrick Spencer, Conservatives.

A car has crashed into the barriers at the entrance of the prime minister's country residence.

Police are investigating after the incident at Chequers in Aylesbury earlier today - and the driver has been arrested.

He is a 44-year-old man from Buckinghamshire, and has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

He's been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and drink-driving.

He was the only occupant of the vehicle, a white Volkswagen Scirocco.

Thames Valley Police said officers are "in the very early stages" of their investigation, but "there is currently no evidence to suggest there was any intention to harm anyone".
