Before you begin writing, make sure you have enough information about the person. You can research by talking to people who know the person well, or reading books and articles written about them.

3. Create an Outline:

This helps keep your essay organized and focused. You can use the basic structure of an essay with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion as a guide. So make sure you include all of the important points in your outline.

4. Use Vivid Language and Imagery:

Describe anything that stands out about the person, such as their physical appearance and mannerisms. Use powerful adjectives to give life to your essay and make it more interesting for your readers.

5. Include Relevant Examples:

Using real-life examples adds depth and texture to your essay. These can be anything from stories of when you met the person or a unique trait that they possess. Examples will also help make your essay more illustrative and descriptive.

6. Write an Effective Conclusion:

Your conclusion should serve as a summary of all the points you have discussed in your essay. Make sure to end on a positive note and provide your readers with a lasting impression of your subject’s character.

The person I admire the most is my sister. She is an inspiration to me. She motivates me to do things that I am not sure about. She takes care of me and supports me whenever I need her. She has achieved so much at such a young age. Her attitude, patience, and confidence really inspire me a lot. She does everything in such a perfect way and never complains about her responsibilities. She is such an inspiration to me that I try to infuse her values within me. She is a person who motivates me every time I need her.

200 Words On The Person I Admire The Most Essay

When asked about a particular person, I admire the most, a lot of names come across my mind. These include my mother, sister, father, and even a few celebrities' names come to my mind. I can proudly tell that the person I admire is my grandmother. She is a woman to be looked upon. She is a great lady who has not only given enough to her home as well as to the world. She is a superwoman who handles her work beautifully simultaneously with her family. For people, Wonder Woman is Gal Gadot, but for me, Wonder Woman is my grandmother.

Why My Grandmother Is My Hero

My grandmother secured a gold medal at her graduation. She was the first female officer in the Audit General Office all over the Northeast. She is also a poet, writer, and novelist. Her work is being published, and it is getting all the love from its readers. She has also done much social work. Due to her social work, she still gets immense love from people. I still have a lot to learn from her, and I will continue admiring her.

500 Words On The Person I Admire The Most Essay

We all have someone or another whom we admire the most. The person I admire the most is Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli - the Person I Admire The Most

Virat Kohli is considered one of the most successful international cricketers, and I try to imbibe some of his virtues that will help them succeed in life. Virat has always inspired me with supremacy, success, and class in his game. Regardless of the team's situation during the match, Virat always tries to finish the game with self-determination, bravery, talent, and the ability to win.

I also try to succeed in my studies by drawing inspiration from his personality traits. What made Virat Kohli a youth icon is his passion for playing cricket and winning matches for his country. His commitment to his game is no longer a hidden fact. Virat has amassed runs in his successful career due to his involvement in match runs as he does not hand wickets easily to bowlers.

Why I Admire Virat Kohli

I still remember the IPL season of 2016 when he scored 973 in a single tournament. He shocked everyone that it is possible for a man to be so good at a craft. He had stitches in his hands despite he made a brilliant century. This day opened my eyes that we can do it whatever could be the circumstances. That day he became an idol for me. He showed that our interest comes secondary to that of the team's interest. It is one such instance of why I love him so much.

Virat Kohli: An Inspiration

His professionalism inspires me to pursue my goals regardless of the circumstances. Virat Kohli is a fitness icon in the sports world, and athletes and their fans look up to him for his fitness. His commitment towards fitness teaches me the value of healthy living and fitness. Self-discipline and practice are the most important aspects of his personality. To master his game, Virat practised more and more to succeed.

Having firmly established himself in every format among many fierce rivals, Kohli is undoubtedly one of the crowning jewels of Indian cricket. Virat Kohli is a symbol of passion and dedication.

A source of inspiration to the youngster, he is a disciplined batsman and was a prolific captain who had led the Indian side to success under his captaincy. His never-giving attitude really makes me his fan. He has always motivated me and showed me the ray of hope that with passion everything can be achieved. He is an inspiration to millions including me. His infused values will remain forever in me and he will continue to be my idol.

Therefore we all have someone or the other who makes our love worth living. One who teaches us that the sky's the limit and one who always pushes us to go out of our comfort zone. They are the people who teach us to be the best version of ourselves and we should always hold onto these people and learn from them.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay About a Person You Admire

how to write an essay about person you admire

Writing a descriptive essay, or a “describe a person you admire essay” can be a fantastic way of developing your writing skills. These skills will be particularly useful if you choose to write fiction.

This type of writing is very different to academic writing, but it is hugely rewarding, and doing it well can become a stepping stone into a career in writing in the United Kingdom.

Step one: Choose your subject/Brainstorm

The essay about someone you admire could focus on, for example, your father, your mother, a friend, a grandparent, a celebrity like UK favourite Kate Middleton, a public figure like Mahatma Ghandi or your favourite teacher.

Write a paragraph about a person you admire as you brainstorm. Think about what message you want to get across.

Step two: Write your first draft

Your first draft is exactly that – a first draft. Don’t worry too much about everything being perfect. The most important thing at this point is getting all your thoughts down on paper.

Remember, this is a descriptive essay about a person you love and feel admiration for – you want the reader to feel as though they know the person after reading your piece.

A good writer can make you feel as though you know a person. A great writer makes you care about the person.

Show, don’t tell

I’m sure you’ve come across this term before. It’s the mantra of most creative writers and their teachers. But what does it actually mean?

It’s simple really. Use words to build up a picture in your reader’s mind. Don’t just tell them things; let them see it in their mind.

For example:

Telling – The man was angry

Showing – The man jumped to his feet, his face red and frowning. He gave an unintelligible roar, spraying spittle in front of his face. He crossed the room in three quick strides, wrenching the door open and slamming it shut behind him.

Do you see the difference there? You can show the reader that the man is angry without even using the word. I’m sure I don’t need to explain why showing is a better writing technique.

Use the senses

To really bring your piece to life and make the reader feel a personal connection to your writing, use all of the senses:

Sight – Describe the physical attributes of the person

Sound – What does their speech sound like?

Touch – What do they feel like – for example, are their hands rough from years of hard work?

Smell – What smells do you associate with the person? Did they always wear a certain scent?

Taste – Do you associate any tastes with the person? Did they have a signature cake recipe that no one can match?

Step three: Edit

Reread your work, concentrating on the following:

  • Does the essay flow well? If not, re-order your paragraphs until it does.
  • Try to imagine you are reading about a stranger. Have you included enough details to make you feel like you know them? Do you know what they look like? Do you feel as though you understand their character and motivations?
  • Have you showed rather than told?
  • Of course, check your spelling, punctuation and grammar too. Have you used clichés? Too many adjectives?

If, at the end of the piece, you feel something towards the person, you have done a good job!

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

4-minute read

  • 7th January 2023

Describing a person or character is difficult for even the most successful authors. It requires a balance of words to make sure they shine through without the language being too heavy. In this article, we’ll look at how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person, share some examples, and talk about different strategies.

1.   Brainstorm Your Ideas

Brainstorming is crucial to any writing process. It’s the process in which you think of ideas for what you’d like to write about. In this case, you’re writing a descriptive paragraph about a person. It’s important to use adjectives to describe the features or characteristics you want to focus on.

One way to come up with ideas for a descriptive paragraph about a person is to go through the five senses. Use the questions below to get some ideas for what you want to highlight about your person.

Appeal to your reader’s senses – smell, taste, sound, sight, and touch

Smell: How does the person smell? Do they wear perfume? Are they doing an activity that would make them have a certain smell?

Taste: Do you associate a certain food with this person? Does it make you think of a specific taste? Can you taste something due to a certain smell they have?

Sound: Do they have a unique voice or laugh? Are they doing an activity that has distinctive sounds?

Sight: What prominent features do they have? For example, think about their dressing style, their smile, or their surroundings. What do you see them doing in your mind when you see a photo of them? What memories do you have of this person? Does this person remind you of something or someone?

Touch: What textures do you see? For example, imagine their skin or clothing. How does it feel if you hug them?

2.   Begin With a Short and Snappy Sentence

Like with any type of writing, you want to hook your reader so that they want to continue reading. In this case, you can use a topic sentence, if appropriate, to introduce your reader to the person. For example:

Or, if you want to be more creative, you can reel them in with a short and snappy sentence about this person. This is called a writing hook . This sentence should focus on a stand-out detail or characteristic about the person you’re describing. For example:

3.   Describe the Person

Now, this is the hard part. But, if you’ve brainstormed plenty of ideas and know which ones you want to focus on, it will be easier. Let’s look at some examples to get a better idea of how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person using the prompt “describe a person you admire.”

Comments: This paragraph is pretty typical of most students. It gives lots of visual details of the person and uses a simile or two (“ Her eyes are like the color of honey” and “Her smile shines like the sun” ). While this strategy gets the job done, it’s not very exciting to read. In fact, it can be quite boring!

Let’s look at how we can rewrite this to make it more exciting.

Comments: In this example, we focused on one defining characteristic of the person we are describing — her laugh. This strategy places more focus on the person you’re describing, rather than the adjectives you use to describe them.

4.   Edit and Revise

After you write your descriptive paragraph, be sure to read it over. Read it out loud. Read it in a funny voice. Doing this will help you to hear the words and identify which parts do not work or sound awkward.

5.   General Tips for Descriptive Writing

●  Avoid using too many descriptive words.

●  Remember to show the reader, not tell.

●  Appeal to the reader’s five senses – smell, touch, taste, sight, and sound.

●  Focus on a striking or defining characteristic.

●  Use contrasting details from other people or surroundings for emphasis.

●  Use literary devices (metaphors, similes etc.) sparingly and with intention.

●  Use a hook to reel your reader in.

●  Use a variety of short and long sentences.

●  Practice creative writing exercises to improve your descriptive writing skills.

●  Always edit and revise your writing.

The Person I Admire The Most is My Friend

I know that everybody can think of a specific person who they admire in life. Whether it’s their character traits, physical features, or social skills, each human has a specific set of attractive things about them that are admirable to others.

The one person that I admire most in my life is my friend Prisca. I look up to and appreciate her simply because of her beauty, brains, and sophisticated nature.

It goes without saying that Prisca is known for her beauty. In fact, that’s what most people say first when they think of her. She has long, curly brown hair, brown eyes that are big and round like saucers, and a perfect body. She is four inches tall with slender legs and a bright and contagious smile. I admire her physical appearance that is enviable and eye-catching.

Prisca, My Best Friend

Prisca has personality traits that make her unique and admirable.

First, she is agreeable. Prisca is very kind; she is friendly, generous, and considerate. You can always expect her to be busy helping others. She is also mindful of how she supports her community. Moreover, she is very cooperative; she willingly and nicely works with other people to achieve a shared goal. Whenever she is free, she always pitches in to help me with my class assignments, and sometimes even hard chores in the house.

Her sophistication and sense of wisdom are commendable. She is hardworking and creative, and this is reflected in her amazing grades. She’s at the top of her class in all subjects and has won numerous competitions at school. She is a go-getter who believes in hard work and consistency.

For as long as I can remember, she has always been referred to as a good example in school, church, and the neighborhood. She is up-to-date and knowledgeable about current world events as she makes it a point to read a lot of books and newspapers. Her taste for fashion and accessories is great and admirable.

Life Lessons from Prisca

On many occasions, Prisca stays genuinely true to herself. She is definitely not a people-pleaser and is very clear on her values and convictions. She is true to who she is. She will not try to be a clone of other people just to be accepted. She speaks up when feeling annoyed to express and release her anger.

Prisca leads by example. She encourages all her friends and younger siblings to be disciplined by being disciplined herself. She is respectful towards everyone and obedient to authorities, and she always abides by rules and codes of behavior.

Moreover, Prisca is selfless. She always makes time to be there for people who need her help. She will give of herself, even when she doesn’t have much to share, whether it’s material or intangible needs. She is always more concerned about the needs and wishes of others and not her own. She takes an active part in community initiatives intended to help and improve the lives of the less fortunate in the locality.

She is straightforward and humble. She always stands by the truth even when faced with the dangers of being left by friends or being victimized. She barely tells lies. Most importantly, even with her wonderful accomplishments, she remains grounded. She doesn’t brag or show off to her peers and friends. She is down to earth and has never paraded around pridefully.

Every person has someone in his or her life that he or she admires for reasons best known to him or her. With Prisca, it’s the fact that she is comfortable with herself. Her beauty compounded with her character makes her a friend for keeps. She is someone I intend to keep in my life.

Whether you went to the same school or have known each other your whole life,  you and the person you look up to should be in the kind of friendship that brings out the best in each other. I know that Prisca has always encouraged me to become the best I can be. I hope you have someone who can give you that kind of confidence boost, too.

Things I Admire About My Best Friend (Short Essay Sample)

Anyone who knows me knows how much I admire respect my good friend Prisca. We started hanging out in elementary school and the rest is history.

It was my mom who encouraged me to start a conversation with Prisca when we sat together in English class on the first day of school. I was feeling timid and shy and was drawn to how Prisca would easily befriend the other children. Even the teachers were fond of her because she knew how to have fun and make people laugh while learning at the same time.

I’m proud to call her one of my closest friends today. Prisca is the reason why I have the confidence and ability to connect with other people warmly. She helped me get over my nervousness in talking to others and accompanied me during breaks to converse with classmates.

I’ll never forget how wonderful a friend Prisca is. In fact, I wish everyone I know had someone like her. Not only is she the first reason I am able to do well in life today, but she also encourages me to relentlessly dream big for my future.

How To Write An Essay About Someone You Admire?

To craft a meaningful piece about the person you admire, think of the reasons why you admire him or her. Look at the different aspects of his or her life story – from the physical and social, to the mental and emotional. How does this person make you feel? How does this person encourage you? Are you a better person with him or her in your life? You can also talk about how the two of you met and what the circumstances were. Share what drew you to him or her in the first place, and how your friendship formed. Talk about the good times, but don’t leave out the challenges you both faced in your friendship.

The Qualities That Make A Person Admirable

There are many ways for someone to be admirable. He or she could be someone who leads by modeling first, so his or her authenticity and transparency are characteristics that are attractive to others. They could have a vast knowledge of a topic that other people wish they knew more about. They could be generous with their time. They could have the ability to hope during even the toughest and darkest of times. They could teach very well. They could make things happen just by their sheer influence. They could give the most sensible and practical advice and don’t offer an opinion that’s unsolicited. They generally make it hard for you to imagine life without them.

The Education Doctor - College Planning Advice from Dr. Pamela Ellis

College Essay How-to: Who is someone you admire?

  • By Dr. Pamela Ellis

  • In College Admissions , college application essays

This article was originally published on April 23, 2012, and has been updated.

For many students, one of the most stressful and confusing parts of the college application process can be answering the essay questions.

To help you prepare for answering the 5 common college application questions , we’ll break each of them down. We’ll also go over some useful tips for answering these questions effectively and making your application stand out.

The second of the five most common questions you’ll see on a college application is:

“Who is someone you admire?”

On the Common Application, a similar question is worded as, “Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you and describe that influence.”

Even if your college application has the simple phrasing of, “Who is someone you admire?” applicants should go further into detail when they answer the “why” part of that question by describing that influence.

And to elaborate on what I mean by this. . . .

It should only take you about 5-10 words to tell “who” you admire. Then, the other 150+ words should show the readers “why” you admire that person.

As the applicant, you have a lot of leeway here in terms of who you choose, and that means you shouldn’t always opt for the low-hanging fruit.

Wondering what I mean by that?

Opting for the low-hanging fruit on a college essay question means writing about safe people, including historical figures like Gandhi or Martin Luther King, or even your mom or dad.

These aren’t necessarily bad choices, but they’re considered safe options that every other student will likely choose as well.

If you want your college application to really stand out from thousands of others, don’t opt for low-hanging fruit on the essay questions. Instead, dig deeper when you’re choosing what or who to write about.

Now you might be asking, okay, like WHO?

To start thinking about who you should write about, ask yourself these questions:

  • What is a meaningful experience I can describe well? (And when I say “describe well,” I mean that you should be able to write about this experience in a way the reader feels they were there with you)
  • What happened in that meaningful experience?
  • Who was there with me during this meaningful experience?
  • What characteristic of a specific person present during this meaningful experience was most memorable?

While you think about your responses to these questions, please free-write your initial thoughts. (And yes, I do mean to handwrite. You can read more about that here .)

Your responses will start you on a path to writing a strong college application essay that stands out above the rest!

Who did you choose?

Next, I’ll cover the 3rd most common essay question:

#3. Why do you want to attend this college?

Johannes Helmold

Since I am applying for the Master’s in Creative Writing program at Iowa University, I thought I should talk about my creative writing teacher Michael Dylan Welch. Besides being an award-winning poet, the Poet Laureate of Redmond two times, and a highly-anthologized author in popular poetry books, his main contribution to writing, I believe, is being an exceptional teacher to many aspiring poets.

After my father passed away, who was a poet and essayist, I had a few other writing teachers that helped me realize more of my potential, but I had no teachers like Mr. Welch. His selfless and tireless assistance in person and by email not only raised my level of skill in writing, but also made me realize my own altruistic self. After about two years of his lessons and reading his essays, I got invited to mentor other poets in a large online community of over 8000 people, specifically in haiku and tanka. For me, this proves how much impact Mr. Welch has been on my writing.

I met him a few times at haiku meetings in the Northwest, and knew him as a friend of my father. A few years later after meeting him those times, living in Ukraine, I emailed him about a poetry book I had written. It was made up of lyrical poetry and haiku—connecting the forms and styles by themes. The comments I received back from him shocked me: it seemed after years of writing haiku, I still had not grasped what a haiku truly was. He made me realize I had to start from the beginning, and he cleared the misconceptions I had about the genre.

In the coming months, we sent emails back and forth, answering any questions I had. I also read almost all his essays on haiku and related forms. Out of the blue, I got an acceptance from Frogpond journal, the publication of the Haiku Society of America—which is one of the top journals in the world for haiku, in any language. I was overjoyed and surprised: I had been trying to get published in Frogpond for many years without success, and after taking lessons from Mr. Welch, I had gotten accepted by them.

This acceptance into Frogpond gave me complete confidence in Mr. Welch’s teachings. It also made me realize that I had a talent in writing haiku, or at least had worked hard and humbly enough to get published in a top journal. I continued to take lessons from Mr. Welch regularly and started to submit to journals every week. After getting accepted by top journal after top journal in haiku and tanka, I feel now settled in being a published poet.

Mr. Welch never asked for payments for his lessons, nor did he ask for personal favors. He always got back to me promptly and gave all the information he could about my questions. When I had written my second book of haiku, Zen and Son , which is a compilation of my father’s haiku and my own haiku, Mr. Welch read through the full book and wrote countless constructive comments. After helping me edit my book, he also directed me to a publisher, Red Moon Press.

Through his selfless teaching, I got inspired to create an online journal named Haiku Commentary , which presents analysis on submitted haiku and related forms of poetry. I created it to spread the word of haiku and teach others what I have learned and continue to learn from Mr. Welch. No money is involved—it was created for the love of haiku and to educate others about it.

In the Master’s in Creative Writing program at Iowa University, I want to focus on the advancement and analysis of haiku in academic settings. My goal is to make haiku a serious and essential part of the American collegiate curriculum in creative writing classes and English courses. I hope with my master’s degree, I can be better equipped and better placed to make these fundamental changes in American education involving poetry.

Essay on Person I admire Most

4 Best Written Essays on the Person I Admire the Most

Having an ideal person in life is of great importance.  We all need someone who supports us in every life situation, who will always be there for you, and help you if needed. No matter what happens, that person is your support system. This could be your best friend or your family member, but it definitely has to be someone close to your heart. But sometimes things turn sour when the person you admire, don’t feel the same way about you.

Essay on the Person I admire Most | Why I Praise My Teacher Essay

A Person I Praise Most is my teacher.  She’s a wonderful human being. She has taught me so many things in these 10 years of my life, and she never gave up on her students. Her credibility is unquestionable. Everything I know today, I learned from her.

She helped me with every obstacle I had since the very beginning; not only did she help me with them, but she also encouraged me to overcome them. She is my inspiration of becoming someone great, and no matter how confused I am about the future , she always reassure me that everything will work out fine, if I believe in myself.

Essay on Person I admire Most

Why I Praise my teacher Most;

Every person should have an ideal in life because if someone does not have something to aspire towards, they don’t know what their purpose is or why they are even alive. This might sound harsh but it’s true. Following are the reasons why I like my teacher most;

  • His way of teaching is very effective and interesting
  • He is patience with us even if we do mistakes he corrects us immediately
  • He always encourages us to come up with new ideas and innovations using the technology tools which helps in bringing out the hidden talents in all of us and at the same time makes learning process fun
  • He is always available for his students and treats us as best friends
  • He strives hard to bring the educational environment to excellence by involving the parents, students and teachers
  • He encourages all of us to participate in social activities like sports events, cultural events etc which boosts our confidence level and enthusiasm towards studying
  • He is a very friendly person and has never bothered us to do anything which reduces our interest level
  • He provides us with necessary facilities like computer lab, library etc
  • His sense of humor is infectious and he makes sure that we understand the subject by thoroughly explaining everything
  • He motivates students along with the teachers to bring out the best in everyone
  • He also gives us class presentations and we learn a lot from them
  • He guides students as per their interests and bring out the hidden talents of each individual like music, sports etc
  • Believe me he is the best teacher I ever had!!! And this is why I love him!

We all need a support system in life, and teachers are the best support systems we have. They always encourage us to be better than what we are today. One of my favorite quotes says:

” A teacher is like a candle, it consumes itself to light the way for others.”

Teachers are role models for children because by teaching their students they become significant in the lives of others. Teachers are an inspiration for good behavior and healthy decisions. They always try their best to guide us at every stage in life and set a good example for everyone so that no one falls in the wrong path and lead a better life.

Essay on Person I admire the Most my father:

Throughout our lives, we come across many people who leave a lasting impression on us. They inspire us, motivate us and shape our character in ways that go beyond words. For me, one such person is my father. He is not just someone I look up to but also the person I admire most in this world.

Aside from being a hard worker, my father has a heart of gold. He has taught me the value of compassion and empathy towards others. I have seen him go out of his way to help those in need, whether it is donating to charity or volunteering his time and skills. His selfless nature has always inspired me to be a better person.

Life is full of challenges, and my father has faced his fair share of them. However, what sets him apart is his resilience. No matter how tough the situation, he never gives up and always finds a way to overcome it. This quality of his has taught me to never lose hope and keep moving forward, no matter what.

Above all, my father is someone I look up to as a role model. He leads by example, and his actions speak louder than words. His unwavering morals and values have shaped my own, and I strive to be a better individual because of him.

Sample Descriptive Essay About A Person You Admire

  • Views 331508
  • Author Abigal W.

When asked about the person I admire in the universe, I do not require to look at celebrities or any other big influential names in society. When it comes to me, the person I admire most in the world is my mother. We all have people whom we consider to be highly inspirational and influential to look upon, and in my case, my mother is an excellent example of these characters. She is an extraordinary person in my life because of her enduring strength that I dearly admire, and she is also kind as well as supportive.

One thing I most admire about my mother for is her strength, which appears to be resistant throughout hard times. My mother is a single mother, and she has managed to raise three children all by herself, providing us with a good life and education, while still balancing work. For instance, when my brother and I cleared high school, only one of us hoped to join college because of our financial situation, but she worked two jobs to ensure that we enrolled in college. Single mothers across the globe face financial instability where they are forced to engage in other strategies to extend income to take care of their family (West et al. 359). I hold great admiration for my mother because of her determination, how she never backs down, and the way she stands up for what she believes in no matter the hardships that come along.

My mother has a striking appearance, but behind this, she is very alluring, admirable, and kind. At first, one can conclude that she is a blunt and cold person because of her quiet nature, but after knowing her, she turns out to be a friendly, warm-hearted, gentle, and generous person. My mother has been a dedicated individual in the society through volunteering in church during weekends and holidays as well as helping in the local homeless shelters. Kindness is crucial and healthy since one takes pride in caring for others since they need caring, and it gives people a pleasant feeling (Adamu par. 6). Thanks to my mother, I have grown to be a kind-hearted and deeply-caring person since I believe that it's upon me to help those in need whenever I am capable.

I am lucky to have a mother who always supports me no matter my misgivings. No matter the activity I am in or the decision I make, my mother is still there for me to give me advice and encouragement, but at the end of the day, she is at all times by my side. I had a difficult time adapting to my first year in high school, and I almost quit, but my mum listened to my grievances, and with her support, I managed to finish high school. Supportive behavior is crucial for individual well-being, especially when it comes to emotional support, where a person can be able to relieve distress from a challenge (MacGeorge and Van Swol 7). My mother's supportive character has given me the strength to endure a lot of challenging situations in life as well as learn a lot in what life has to offer.

Special people like my mother exist to make our lives better and to mold us to become a better version of ourselves. My mother is a strong spirited person, kind-hearted, has unbreakable strength and very supportive. Over the years, I have learned a lot through her character and thoughts, which have molded me to the caring, decent, and brilliant person I am today. The people around us turn out to be the best role models.

What Is An Expository Essay?

' src=

An expository essay is one which is used to explain something, in the most simple terms. The word expository comes from the word expose, and this means to uncover something so that other people are able to understand it for what it is. This type of essay is therefore used as a way of explaining or clarifying the subject for the reader.

It might function as an evaluation or an investigation, but it could also function as an argument surrounding the idea for clarification. It is easy to confuse this type of essay with the argumentative essay but the key difference is that the expository essay will remain neutral whereas the argumentative essay tends to take a side.

A good expository essay will allow the reader to gain a certain level of knowledge on the subject that is being explained and will clear up any misunderstandings that the reader may have had. The essay serves as a way of looking neutrally at any given topic and does not give the writers personal views.

How To Write An Expository Essay

Now that we are clear on what an expository essay is used to discuss, we are ready to begin writing one for ourselves. However, as with any type of essay, there are certain rules that you must follow in order to achieve the best results. We are now going to take a look at the steps you should take in order to write a great expository essay.

Select A Topic

The most crucial part of any essay planning is selecting the right topic, and there are so many to choose from when it comes to writing an expository essay. You should choose a topic that can be easily researched so that you can get a good amount of information for both sides of the story but also one which strike an interest in you. Let’s take a look at some examples of topics you might write on.

  • Explain Religion and which one you should introduce your child to.
  • Explain Global warming.
  • Explain Science and its effect on the world.
  • Explain the best countries to visit for families/singles/couples
  • Explain what life is like for an illegal immigrant
  • Explain how music has an influence on our way of life
  • Explain the best time period of the last 500 years.
  • Write an essay on a certain sport.
  • Explain why parents need to be strict with their children.
  • Explain cryptocurrency and how it has affected the economy.
  • Explain why your admire someone.

Research The Topic

Once you have selected your topic, it is important that you perform the relevant research. When writing an essay, it is critical that you present data and facts that are up to date and correct. This means that research should be an integral part of your preparations in writing an expository essay.

Choose Some Examples

In order to properly explain the topic, you should present your readers with some examples and choosing the right ones will not only keep your reader engaged but will also serve to explain the topic in the most detailed and easy to understand way. For example, if you have decided to write about which religion you should introduce your children to, you might select one or two of the major religions which you believe to the most relevant, for example Islam and Christianity.

Outline Your Essay

Every essay needs a good essay outline in order for the author to be able to write the piece effectively. Creating your essay outline is one of the most integral parts of the process and good attention should be paid to it.

  • Introduction  – In your introduction, you should include a hook to get the attention of the reader and a short description of what the essay is going to be about. You should also include your thesis statement which will tell the reader the purpose of the essay.
  • Body paragraphs  – usually an essay will be made up of three body paragraphs, however you can be flexible with this should you need more or less words to complete your work. In each of these paragraphs you should include one argument point along with any data and sources to back this up.
  • Conclusion  – The conclusion will wrap up all the ideas that were talked about during the essay and will refer back to the thesis statement once again.

Write Your Essay

Remember that the purpose of an expository essay is to clarify something to the reader and so it is important that you write in clear terms which are easy to understand.

You should include any examples of the topic which are backed up by data and statistics as this will give the reader a greater knowledge on the subject by the end of the essay.

Once you have finished writing, it is very important to go back over your work and check for any spelling errors or grammar mistakes as well as adding and taking away any necessary information.

An Example Of An Expository Essay

As a way to gain a further understanding on what an expository essay should look like and how it should be written, we are now going to take a look at a passage taken from an expository essay called ‘Learning to read’ written by Malcolm X.

It is because of my letters I happened to come across beginning to acquire a form of homemade education.

I was becoming more and more frustrated in not being able to say what I had wanted to convey in a letter, particularly ones which were written to Mr E Muhammad.

On the street, I’d been the hustler who was most articulate and has commanded everyone’s attention when I had said something. However, now whilst attempting to write in simple English, not only was I not articulate but I was not even functional. What would I sound like if I wrote in slang, a way I would normally say it, something along the lines of ‘Hey daddy, lemme pull ya coat about the cat’

Many of the people who hear me today either in person or on the television, perhaps who read something said by me, assume that I went to school for much longer than just the 8th grade. This is an impression given entirely because of my prison studies.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on A Famous Person You Admire

Introduction.

I admire many famous people, but the one I admire the most is Albert Einstein. He was a renowned physicist known for his theory of relativity.

Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. He showed a keen interest in mathematics and physics from a young age.

Achievements

Einstein is famous for his theory of relativity. His E=mc2 equation has significantly influenced modern physics.

Einstein was not just intelligent, but also kind-hearted. He fought for peace and civil rights, showing his admirable character.

Einstein’s intelligence, kindness, and achievements make him the person I most admire.

250 Words Essay on A Famous Person You Admire

Among the galaxy of great personalities, one person I deeply admire is the renowned physicist and cosmologist, Stephen Hawking. His contributions to science and his indomitable spirit in the face of adversity have always been a source of inspiration for me.

Contribution to Science

Hawking’s groundbreaking work in the field of theoretical physics and cosmology has revolutionized our understanding of the universe. His research on black holes and the nature of time has had profound implications, challenging the established norms and pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.

Overcoming Adversity

Diagnosed with a debilitating motor neuron disease at the age of 21, Hawking was given a mere two years to live. However, this did not deter him. Despite his physical limitations, he continued his scientific pursuits with relentless determination. This aspect of his life is a testament to his resilience and an example of how physical constraints can’t limit the power of the human mind.

Hawking’s legacy extends beyond his scientific contributions. He was an advocate for the importance of science education and made complex scientific concepts accessible to the general public through his bestselling book, “A Brief History of Time”. His life story, encapsulating his scientific achievements and personal struggles, continues to inspire millions around the world.

Stephen Hawking’s life and work embody the power of perseverance, the importance of curiosity, and the pursuit of knowledge. His story is a reminder that limitations are only as restricting as we allow them to be. To me, he is not just a famous scientist, but a symbol of resilience, making him a person I deeply admire.

500 Words Essay on A Famous Person You Admire

The world is filled with remarkable individuals who inspire us with their life journeys and accomplishments. Among such luminaries, the person I admire the most is Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Inc. His relentless pursuit of innovation, determination in the face of adversity, and vision for a sustainable future make him a role model for many.

Unyielding Pursuit of Innovation

Elon Musk’s unwavering commitment to innovation is nothing short of inspiring. He has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible, transforming science fiction into reality. His vision for SpaceX was met with skepticism, yet he persisted. Today, SpaceX is the first privately-funded company to not only send a spacecraft to the International Space Station but also develop a reusable rocket, drastically cutting the cost of space travel. Musk’s innovative spirit is also evident in Tesla Inc., where he revolutionized the auto industry by making electric vehicles a viable and desirable alternative to fossil fuel-powered cars.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Adversity is a common theme in Musk’s journey. He has faced numerous challenges, including near-bankruptcy of Tesla and multiple failed launches at SpaceX. However, Musk’s resilience in the face of adversity is commendable. He has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to rise from setbacks, turning failures into stepping stones towards success. His ability to maintain unwavering focus on his goals, despite the odds, is a testament to his strength of character and a source of inspiration.

Vision for a Sustainable Future

Perhaps the most admirable trait of Elon Musk is his vision for a sustainable future. He is not just a businessman but a visionary who is leveraging technology to address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Through Tesla, he is promoting a shift towards renewable energy, contributing significantly to the fight against climate change. With SpaceX, he envisions a future where humans become a multi-planetary species, thus safeguarding the survival of humanity.

In conclusion, Elon Musk’s relentless pursuit of innovation, resilience in the face of adversity, and vision for a sustainable future make him a person worthy of admiration. His life serves as a reminder that with determination, courage, and a clear vision, one can overcome any obstacle and make a significant impact on the world. His story inspires us to dream big, work hard, and never give up, no matter the odds.

how to write an essay about person you admire

Don't "fall in love" with your travel destination

I’ve been to wales 30 times in 40 years. i’d rather have my tongue pierced than say i "fell in love" with it, by pamela petro.

I cringe when I read that so-and-so fell in love with someplace.

Come on , I think, you can do better than that.

“I fell in love with _____!” (Fill in the location of your choice — everyone does.) It’s the most over-used sentence in travel writing . I’ve been to Wales 30 times in 40 years, yet I’d rather have my tongue pierced than say I fell in love with it. Editors and publicists often try to push me into the love corner, but I snap and growl, as cornered creatures do.

I know I sound grouchy. But only because I want to get this right.

I love a woman — my partner of 36 years. I love a dog — my Welsh Corgi of three years. My parents are dead, but I still love them. I also love ice cream and seasons 1 and 3 of "Ted Lasso ." And I’m OK with all that. Love is an elastic verb.

When I was 23 and an American graduate student in Wales, the rolling pastures of Ceredigion at dusk, sweet-smelling of dung and the day’s photosynthesis, quiet with sheep and centuries of secrets, teetering on the edge of darkness, silence, and poverty, brought me to my knees with an aching need to do more than testify to their existence. More than take a photo or write a description. I needed to know the Welsh countryside in time as well as space. I strained against the edges of mortality to grasp the whole of it in a way off limits to humans. I felt compelled to imagine, to resurrect all those who’d stood alongside the darkening fields before me, tending animals, dreaming of home, praying to gods whose names were unknown to me.

Up until I was 20, when I studied in Paris, I thought I’d find my place in France. It turns out I found Marguerite instead.

Is this love? Is love wanting to scream in frustration because even though all you did was watch the sun set over a line of receding hills, it felt like the planet was offering you a gift you didn’t have the age or wisdom to be able to accept?

I don’t know, but it’s where I draw the line. To say I fell in love with Wales collapses the relationship of person and place into something sentimental and two-dimensional, in a way that saying I fell in love with my partner, Marguerite, does not. Maybe that’s because when we apply love to people we understand that the verb “love” turns and twists like a multidimensional kaleidoscope — we’ve all seen the colors and patterns change, been dazzled, furious, confused, contented. And we know what “I love mint chocolate chip” means, too. We understand that “love” contracts in that sentence to convey something like flavor lust + icy mouth feel = ten minutes of happiness. And nothing more.

Love of place is just as complex as love of people, but we’re not used to excavating all that the word can mean when we say, “I fell in love with Wales.” There’s a whole lot more going on than a hearty appreciation of sheep, interlaced, rolling hills and Iron Age forts.

Up until I was 20, when I studied in Paris, I thought I’d find my place in France. It turns out I found Marguerite instead. France — a place I deeply admire — embraces centrality. Paris is the center of France and France is (arguably) the center of the universe. I didn’t articulate any of this at the time, but a previously unknown, murky appendage in my brainstem lifted its head and howled disagreement.

When I arrived in Wales three years later, it changed its tune. Wales is central to … well, nothing. As I wrote in my 2023 book, " The Long Field – Wales and the Presence of Absence, a Memoir ," the very name “Wales” is a Saxon word meaning “Home of the Foreigners.” The name Wales calls itself, in Welsh, is Cymru (KUM-ree), which means “Home of Fellow Countrymen.” The difference between the two is the difference between “Us” and “Them.’ To the world at large, after Wales became the first colony of the future English empire in 1282, it was defined as a negative: This is the place where we are not . It became the home of “Them.”

Ever since, the view from its minority rung on the UK geopolitical hierarchy has been alternative. A strong socialist bent in politics, nonconformist in religion, working class. The Welsh language has been a marker of difference, too. Far more so than other Celtic strongholds in the British Isles — Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Cornwall — Wales has hung on to its tongue, about which shifting opinions have formed over the years. It’s preserved our identity; no, it’s held us back. Whichever you believe, Welsh remains stubbornly spoken in shops, on TV and radio, in kitchens and government conference rooms throughout the country.

The landscape’s clarity sliced through my memories of over-built New Jersey, slicing down to the mental bedrock beneath — a primary place of understanding where memory and concept conjoin.

As a young woman lurking on the edges of Welsh sheep pastures, I sensed Wales’ marginality before I understood it. While there was a grandeur to the geography, the towns’ and farmhouses’ lack of studied prettiness—a hallmark in England—testified to Wales’ exclusion from generic British prosperity. It was far from London; it was hard to get to; it was different. And you know what? That felt familiar. I was a middle-class kid from New Jersey, but like a poultice, this ancient, colonized country drew out an answering difference from my bones.

I grew up as part of an American anti-establishment generation against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the feminist movement. All of that led me to shy away from the center and naturally embrace the edge. Not to mention my hunch, shoved into the depths of my psyche, that I might be gay.

Marguerite and I had already met in Paris, but it was Wales’ nearly two-millennia-old embrace of its alternative path in the UK — the place where people speak “that funny language with no vowels” ( not true: “w” and “y” are vowels in Welsh, so it actually has more vowels than English), where there are more sheep than people, where Americans don’t visit—that suggested to me that an alternative path might not be so bad. More than that: it helped me realize I’d already been on one, all my life.

When I went home to New Jersey after grad school friends demanded a sentence about my experience. “School was OK, but I loved Wales,” would’ve sufficed. Yet every time I gave in and said something along those lines, I felt like I was betraying the extraordinary experience the Welsh call cynefin. (I was relieved that my family never used the “L” word; they just called my connection to Wales, “Pam’s Welsh thing,” as in, “Is Pam over her Welsh thing yet?”)

When I was researching "The Long Field," Gillian Clarke, the former National Poet of Wales, introduced me to the word cynefin . (Pronounce it Kun-EV-in. In Welsh a single f is pronounced as a v  — it takes two f s to make the noise in “fight” — and the emphasis is always on the penultimate syllable. Even speaking English the Welsh stress the second-to-last sound. I love the soft way they skid into “seven,” pronouncing it SEV-un, dragging out the “ev” and swallowing the “un.” When they say that I hear the tide receding.)

Gillian wrote in an email, “Cynefin is the word used for the way a sheep passes on to her lamb, generation after generation, the knowledge of the mountain, the exact part of the mountain that is hers.” I understood why that would matter to the lamb, but not to me. Then Gillian continued: “Or it can mean that sudden sense you have that you belong to this particular place though you may never have set foot in it before.”

Ah ha! I understood. Cynefin is a way of describing the threshold where the interior imagination meets the outside world — the place where love resides.

It wasn’t just marginality that coaxed cynefin from me in West Wales. It was the landscape, too. I’d grown up in suburban New Jersey, where the geography of the planet is hidden beneath a barnacled crust of 20th-century houses, highways, and shopping malls. As a child I felt there was nothing to hold me in place — no anchor in space or time to keep me from floating away. And then I went to rural Wales and found a world with few trees and a distant horizon. A place where you could climb a hill and understand instantly how the earth had been made, where the glacier had passed and how rivers sculpted out valleys. The landscape’s clarity sliced through my memories of over-built New Jersey, slicing down to the mental bedrock beneath — a primary place of understanding where memory and concept conjoin. And that place looked like Wales. I’d always seen it in my mind’s eye, and now here it was beneath my feet. I remember writing in my book, "I felt I’d found the key to a map I’d carried in my head since I was a little girl but had never before been able to read. And until I could read that map, I’d had no perspective on my species’ place on the planet," and shivering with the understanding I’d never written truer words.

Surely this is love—but I didn’t fall into it. Falling is just too easy. Although cynefin may be sudden, it requires preparation. There has to be longing first, and a fiercely imagined “geography of the soul,” as novelist Josephine Hart calls it, before there can be cynefin. And only once you’ve felt it comes the real effort. I had to work for decades to earn the right to love Wales. I had to learn its language—well…let’s say I had to try to learn it — and its myths and history, to read its poets and novelists, to listen to its hymns and folk songs and bands, descend into its mines and walk its paths. Let its rain soak my hair and creep inside my bones. If anything, my love for Wales has been more of a climb than a fall. I suspect it’ll take a lifetime to reach the summit.

Melinda French Gates: The Enemies of Progress Play Offense. I Want to Help Even the Match.

A photo illustration showing Melinda French Gates amid a dollar bill broken up into squares on a grid.

By Melinda French Gates

Ms. French Gates is a philanthropist and the founder of the charitable organization Pivotal.

Many years ago, I received this piece of advice: “Set your own agenda, or someone else will set it for you.” I’ve carried those words with me ever since.

That’s why, next week, I will leave the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation , of which I was a co-founder almost 25 years ago, to open a new chapter in my philanthropy. To begin, I am announcing $1 billion in new spending over the next two years for people and organizations working on behalf of women and families around the world, including on reproductive rights in the United States.

In nearly 20 years as an advocate for women and girls, I have learned that there will always be people who say it’s not the right time to talk about gender equality. Not if you want to be relevant. Not if you want to be effective with world leaders (most of them men). The second the global agenda gets crowded, women and girls fall off.

It’s frustrating and shortsighted. Decades of research on economics , well-being and governance make it clear that investing in women and girls benefits everyone. We know that economies with women’s full participation have more room to grow. That women’s political participation is associated with decreased corruption. That peace agreements are more durable when women are involved in writing them. That reducing the time women spend in poor health could add as much as $1 trillion to the global economy by 2040.

And yet, around the world, women are seeing a tremendous upsurge in political violence and other threats to their safety, in conflict zones where rape is used as a tool of war, in Afghanistan where the Taliban takeover has erased 20 years of progress for women and girls, in many low-income countries where the number of acutely malnourished pregnant and breastfeeding women is soaring.

In the United States, maternal mortality rates continue to be unconscionable , with Black and Native American mothers at highest risk. Women in 14 states have lost the right to terminate a pregnancy under almost any circumstances. We remain the only advanced economy without any form of national paid family leave. And the number of teenage girls experiencing suicidal thoughts and persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness is at a decade high.

Despite the pressing need, only about 2 percent of charitable giving in the United States goes to organizations focused on women and girls, and only about half a percentage point goes to organizations focused on women of color specifically.

When we allow this cause to go so chronically underfunded, we all pay the cost. As shocking as it is to contemplate, my 1-year-old granddaughter may grow up with fewer rights than I had.

Over the past few weeks, as part of the $1 billion in new funding I’m committing to these efforts, I have begun directing new grants through my organization, Pivotal, to groups working in the United States to protect the rights of women and advance their power and influence. These include the National Women’s Law Center, the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the Center for Reproductive Rights.

While I have long focused on improving contraceptive access overseas, in the post-Dobbs era, I now feel compelled to support reproductive rights here at home. For too long, a lack of money has forced organizations fighting for women's rights into a defensive posture while the enemies of progress play offense. I want to help even the match.

I’m also experimenting with novel tactics to bring a wider range of perspectives into philanthropy. Recently, I offered 12 people whose work I admire their own $20 million grant-making fund to distribute as he or she sees fit. That group — which includes the former prime minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, the athlete and maternal-health advocate Allyson Felix, and an Afghan champion of girls’ education, Shabana Basij-Rasikh — represents a wide range of expertise and experience. I’m eager to see the landscape of funding opportunities through their eyes, and the results their approaches unlock.

In the fall, I will introduce a $250 million initiative focused on improving the mental and physical health of women and girls globally. By issuing an open call to grass-roots organizations beyond the reach of major funders, I hope to lift up groups with personal connections to the issues they work on. People on the front lines should get the attention and investment they deserve, including from me.

As a young woman, I could never have imagined that one day I would be part of an effort like this. Because I have been given this extraordinary opportunity, I am determined to do everything I can to seize it and to set an agenda that helps other women and girls set theirs, too.
