When Robert was little, he said his dream was to marry a princess from a faraway land. I’ll let y’all decide whether Minnesota is far enough, but Christine, you’re as close as it gets to royalty in his eyes. And I must say, I agree.

Christine, you are such a wonderful, caring, and kind young woman. All of Robert’s nieces and nephews love you—probably more than they love Robert, honestly! But who wouldn’t? Thank you for choosing my son. If he ever starts fumbling, let me know, okay? We will straighten everything out quickly.

Anyway, with that said, welcome to our tiny family! We’re loud, we’re nosy, and we’re all here because we love you two so much.

To end my speech, I’d like to offer some sage advice. Robert, for the love of God, please remember to put the toilet seat down. And Christine, well, just remember that Robert’s doing his best. You two stay kind and patient to each other now more than ever, you hear?

5. While it was quite a long time ago, I can still remember my very own wedding day quite vividly. Even though the wedding day was all about my husband and I, I did not get to see him all day until the wedding ceremony itself. That is, after all, the tradition.

As I prepared for the wedding, I was surrounded by plenty of loving people including my bridesmaids, my mother-in-law, and my own loving mother who was a huge source of support for me as I planned my wedding.

On the day of my wedding, I knew that my mother was excited for me, but I also knew there was something bittersweet about seeing your baby getting married. Today, I truly have an idea of how my mother felt. I can hardly believe that my baby boy is now the man sitting right there. How time flies.

[Groom,] I am beyond proud of you for everything that you are and everything that you have accomplished. No matter what you do, you make us so proud and happy and I know that I am not alone when I say that you and [bride] are just right for each other. I just know that you will bring each other love, joy, and peace for many years to come.

6. [Groom,] you have always been a boy that I could be proud of. And now that you are a man, I could not be any prouder of who you have become. As your mother, I am so very happy and proud for you because you were able to find [bride,] a loving, beautiful woman who will love you for the rest of your life. 7. The first time I laid eyes on [groom,] I was instantly in love. He was my little baby who grow into a wobbly toddler, and then a curious child. Then came the pre-teen and teen years and the next thing I knew, my little baby was a man.

If anything a few drinks will cause you to lose focus and will probably add to your nerves. A few too many drinks will make you sloppy and possibly make you forget the rules about avoiding taboos.
• Practice many times Reading directly from your notes is never a good speech. Mothers of the groom are encouraged to practice speaking in front of a mirror and friends. This will help establish a tempo and commit your points to memory.
• Use note cards You shouldn’t read from your notes, but you should have your talking points written down. Nerves often get the better of us and cause us to lose track of what we are saying. A few written reminders will keep you on point.

A short mother of the groom’s speech is typically under 3 minutes long. A short speech is a great goal to have as most speeches suffer from running too long. There are lots to say, and scaling it back to the bare minimum will keep things punchy and concise.

The trick is self-editing. Once you write your first draft, analyze each complete thought and try to find the quickest way to relay those thoughts.

If your son met his bride at a sporting event, your mother of the groom speech could start a little something like this:

When John was a little boy, a third-grade teacher taught him how to dribble a basketball. Once he got good at it he joined the basketball team and made a bunch of new friends. Sports taught him the value of teamwork.

This is a nice story but could be much more concise.

• “When John was a little boy, a third-grade teacher…” These are redundant statements. By stating that John was in the second grade it becomes immediately evident that he was also a child at the time.
• “Once he got good at it he joined the basketball team…” This detail does not add a lesson to the story.
• “Sports taught him the value of teamwork.” This is a nice thought, but it’s a little disjointed from the rest of the paragraph.

When you consider all of these factors the new sentence becomes:

John joined the basketball team in second grade. This introduced him to a lot of new friends and taught him the value of teamwork.

Half the amount of words relay the same information without the potential for confusion. Use this technique with your jokes, your anecdotes, and your well-wishes.

Motivational speech from the mother of the groom to the bride

The second mother of the groom’s speech style is motivational. The entire point of the speech is to deliver sage advice about how to nurture love and facilitate a successful marriage. This style requires attention to balance. On one hand, you want to be realistic about the difficulties that marriages endure. On the other, you don’t want to be all gloom and doom.

One thing to avoid is stories like “Sarah and Dave were just as happy as you when they first started out. Now they are divorced and Dave doesn’t have access to the kids anymore.”

This is not advice. This does not help the couple start off on the right foot. Instead, provide advice that helps the bride and groom avoid fights and misunderstandings. Explain that a marriage takes work.

“Marriage is not a 50/50 relationship. It’s 100/100. Your vows today mean that you will always give your all and that, if either of you isn’t giving 100%, the other will be there to support you and bring you back up. Marriage is a partnership that both participants need to contribute to every day.”

• In short, your speech should include examples of staying true to the couple’s vows. Examples of struggles your marriage has endured will serve to provide guidance on how they can avoid it, or manage it if it happens.
• The focus should be on love and cooperation, not warnings.
• You can also consider providing practical advice. Most couples are aware of the significance and value of love but are ill-prepared for life’s surprises.
• Marriage advice about raising a family: “Marriage is the beginning of a family. You will never be 100% ready for a child, but the two of you have all of the love needed to successfully raise a son or daughter.”
• Marriage advice about finances: “Love is more important than money, but money does play a huge role in your future. You are accountable to each other and should be transparent with your spending, savings, debts, and investments.”
• Marriage advice about careers: “In marriage, your family comes first. Although your jobs pay the bills, they do not define who you are.”

These types of advice can, and should, be blunt. Sugar coating the realities of life only serves to dilute the message.

Touching mother of the groom speech

An emotionally deep mother of the groom’s speech is always a winner. Someone who has experienced a lifetime of marriage and is overjoyed that her son is about to experience the same thing. Just make sure to have the tissue ready.

The touching of the mother of the groom’s speeches is based on emotion. They talk about feelings, relationships, and the future. They acknowledge personality traits

• If you are in a healthy marriage, this is a good time to express how important it is to set a good example. “After 40 years of marriage, your father and I still hold hands. It warms my heart to know that one day you will be standing in front of your children feeling the same way.”
• If the groom’s father has passed away or is otherwise absent, you can speak on his behalf. “Your father would be so proud of the man you have become. The key to a successful touching speech is to speak from the heart. Use your personal experiences and anecdotes to tell the story of how your son arrived at this point in his life. Explain the journey that both you, your son, and your new daughter-in-law have developed and how many more experiences they have to look forward to.

Stay true to yourself. If you’re known to be a funny person, incorporate jokes into your mother of the groom speech. If you are naturally emotional, let it shine. Sticking to your structure and practicing your speech will make it good. Staying true to yourself and allowing your personality to shine will make it great!

Why Is The Mother Of The Groom Speech Special?

Traditionally, there’s not much for the groom to look forward to when it comes to the speeches. He has the pressure of delivering one but all he gets in return is comedic abuse from the best man. But why should it just be the bride’s parents who get to mark the wedding as one of life’s special moments?

Whatever the gender of your child, their wedding is a big deal for both of you. This deserves to be acknowledged so make sure you grab this opportunity and give a great speech.

This means resisting the urge to start your speech with baby stories ( all babies cry too much and don’t sleep enough!) or standing up and simply listing all his achievements (just dull).

Instead, paint a picture of his unique personality with your inside stories. Make people laugh but leave them in no doubt how much you love your son and his partner.

Mother Of The Groom Etiquette

Relax. There isn’t any. Just be polite and welcoming and you’ve ticked the etiquette box.

• DON’T – You don’t need to go formal or overly posh. There’s rarely a need to address the guests as ‘ladies and gentlemen’ and it can often sound too formal if you do. A simple ‘Well hello everyone’ will suffix.
• DO – If there are guests you haven’t yet met then it’s worth introducing yourself as the groom’s mum.
• DO – If you’re first on the wedding speech line up then it’s your job to welcome everyone to the wedding. Get some humour in there early and you’ll find you immediately relax.
• DON’T – Now, a lot of parents make the mistake of thinking they need to thank certain guests, ones who have travelled far or are particularly elderly. That’s actually your son’s job so don’t steal his thunder.
• DO – Of course, if you’re giving a speech in the absence of his dad, then it’s certainly worth reading our Dearly Departed blog – everything you need to know to pay a heartwarming tribute without the risk of becoming overly emotional.
• DO – Conclude your speech with a toast to the happy couple but make sure it’s more exciting than the usual father of the bride offering. Maybe toast ‘a lifetime of dancing on tables’?

The structure of a mother of the groom speech is similar to a father of the bride speech. Here’s the idea…

• Welcome all the guests and get them laughing straight away
• Tell some  funny anecdotes from your son’s childhood  (ideally illustrating qualities that everyone will recognise in him today)
• Pay tribute to the man he is today . The good stuff, the lovely stuff, but most importantly, the  funny stuff . 
• Recount meeting your son’s partner for the first time and how you’ve grown to love them and their family
• You may want to offer some  funny or heart-warming advice to the married couple . Nothing too profound or pompous.

Basically, your challenge is to sum up a lifetime of love in less than ten minutes.

In terms of content,  you could choose to concentrate on one particularly funny story or several stories that link up nicely. You may remember something from their childhood which seems particularly relevant today. Or you may want to offer some advice on how your son should behave as a husband.

1 – INDULGE IN MEMORIES 

Writing your mother of the groom speech is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s your chance to dig out the old photos, memory boxes, and school reports and get properly nostalgic. Indulge!

But as well as a trip down memory lane,  use this time to dig up the evidence. How do the childhood artifacts relate to the man he is today? Were there early indications he’d be an engineer? Or were his teachers completely wrong about him?

He’ll love the surprising insights you can reveal, as will the guests!

2 – DON’T FORGET HIS PARTNER 

Yes, there will be so much to say about your son but don’t forget the other half of the happy couple! 

If it’s a heterosexual wedding, the father-of-the-bride may make fun of the groom in their speech, but it’s not as common for anyone to make fun of the bride on ‘her big day’. Avoid this at all costs unless you’re sure they’re up for a little gentle teasing about the time they split red wine all over your cream carpet. If you have any doubts, don’t. Your son’s worked very hard to get this wife and, if you scare her off, another one may not be around for a while.

If it’s a same-sex marriage your new son-in-law may be up for a little more ribbing. Completely sexist but we’ve generally found this to still be the case.

3 – BE FUNNY

All wedding speeches should contain an element of humour, not just the best man’s.

No one is expecting you to be a stand-up comedian so just be yourself. Avoid any ‘wedding jokes’ you’ve found on Google and instead rely on all the real, authentic stories that will make your speech memorable and meaningful. 

Remember the adage ‘it’s funny because it’s true’. Pinpoint the things that make your son unique. What are his quirks? His guilty pleasures? What is he obsessed by?

4 – KEEP IT SHORT

You’ll amaze yourself with just how much material you find once you get started on your speech b ut remember, brevity is the soul of wit, so be selective and make sure your speech is somewhere between 750 and 1,300 words (Max!). 

When you’ve written your first draft, set yourself a challenge to edit it in half. Stories, jokes, and speeches are all better if they’re punchy. 

5 – PREPARE TO DELIVER 

No matter how good your speech is, it won’t sound good if you rush through it. So take your time, look at the audience, and don’t mumble into the mic. While this speech has traditionally been given at rehearsal dinners , it's not unusual for the mother of the groom to speak at the wedding reception , either.

But when should a mother of the groom speech be delivered? While the father of the bride speech is most often given during the wedding reception, can the groom's mom give hers then, too? "I believe the mother of the groom can give a speech at both the wedding rehearsal and at the wedding celebration," says celebrity wedding and event planner David Tutera .

However, if you prefer to speak in a more intimate environment, you may opt to present your speech at the rehearsal dinner . According to Sheils, the rehearsal dinner is "the perfect opportunity for a more personal mother of the groom toast."

"The wedding is about the couple, so keep that in mind when you're writing your speech, so it's not just one-sided," explains Lynne Kennedy of The Gilded Aisle Weddings in Chicago. With all this being said, "Don't talk solely about your son," says Sheils. Instead, she recommends talking about his new spouse, what you love about them, and how they fit into your family.

According to Kennedy, the mother of the groom should thank the bride's parents for raising a kind and beautiful person. Sheils agrees with this sentiment. She adds that this could be done at either the beginning or end of your wedding toast (depending on your preference).

I'll never forget the time he came home from school and told me he thought he was going to flunk 5th grade. I said "Eldon, that's negative. You have to be positive." He said, "Mom, I'm positive I'm going to flunk 5th grade."

You know, Stan and I have been together a long time. People ask me how we did it. Well, we made a pact a long time ago - the first one to pack up and leave has to take the kids.

And we take time for romance. Two times a week, we go to a nice restaurant, a little wine, good food and companionship. He goes Tuesdays. I go Fridays.

And Stan "tries" to compliment me - the other day he told me that God made me "beautiful but dumb." I said, "Yes, Stan. He made me beautiful so you would love me. And he made me dumb so I would love you."

Sara, just keep in mind that husbands are a handful. I remember the day Eldon was born, Stan called the hospital in a total panic and yelled, "My wife is pregnant, and her contractions are only two minutes apart!" The doctor said, "Is this her first child?" Stan said, "No, you idiot! This is her husband!"

So they are not always the brightest bulbs on the tree.

Nonetheless, I love him. And - like ours - I know the love between Sara and Eldon will grow stronger every day. I also look forward to watching the bond between our families strengthen over the years.
