If you thought that “Samples Base” and “Free Essays” were the same things, you got confused just like we did. The question is: why did UKEssays separate these two features? Well, it’s because their “ Free Essays ” database consists of texts written by students and not by the company’s experts.

The essays there are much more diverse and numerous than those in the sample base. The interface is nicely organized. You’ll be able to see the word count of each essay and cite them using an in-built reference generator.

Unfortunately, to our knowledge, something shady is going on with this database . In some UKEssays reviews, students complain about their texts being included in the website’s database without their knowledge. Some speculate that a plagiarism checker called Viper (owned by the same company that owns UKEssays) stealthily copied their texts and later uploaded them into the database.

This disturbing fact makes us suspect that not all samples were added with the authors’ permission.

This is the first time we’ve seen free lectures on academic websites. Basically, UKEssays offers detailed transcripts of lessons with additional illustrations. You can read them and learn many new things about various subjects. It’s all well-written and contains plenty of valuable information.

We can’t vouch for the academic source of these lectures (we suspect the website’s experts wrote them,) but including them was a good idea.

This feature really freaked us out. As UKEssays states, Humanity University is “the world’s first University dedicated to your worth and value as a human being.” What, in your opinion, can this vague description mean? Here’s a hint: it’s a stream of esoteric thoughts narrated by UKEssays’ founder, Barclay James.

This feature is relatively new and was first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Barclay James offers to pass a lecture course that will supposedly grant you “success in any area.” How exactly will it do that? Who knows! UKEssays’ website only shows a few short previews. To see the remaining 98% of this course, you’d have to join its Discord channel. Once you do, you’ll get bombarded by a ton of useless information that we highly doubt you’ll need in your life.

Are you intrigued by headlines like The Real You and What Color is Your Brainscan? Or are you a New Age self-help enthusiast? If so, then sure, go ahead and check it out. But as for us, we just suspect it all to be a scammy way to promote UKEssays’ writing services —more on that in a moment.

This is the most important feature and the reason students visit the website in the first place. UK Essays’ writing service is similar to those provided by other academic helpers. The main difference is a wider variety of assignments. Aside from standard written tasks, these include:

UK students are being hit by a wave of essay-writing scammers

As students start their courses at universities across the country this month, they’ll log into their university-provided email accounts for the first time. It won’t take long before they are bombarded with a deluge of emails enticing them to hoodwink their tutors.

More than half a million emails, encouraging students to cheat on their essays by outsourcing them to essay writing services, were delivered directly to university inboxes over the last twelve months.

“We know companies are spamming students, but the whole scale of it does surprise me. Over 500,000 emails is a massive number,” says Thomas Lancaster, a senior teaching fellow at Imperial College London, and a leading researcher in the field of academic fraud. “It should be something that's on universities' radar, because it's encouraging students to cheat.”

The inbox of one Chinese student hints at the scale of the issue. Over the past year, one inbox received 97 emails from 55 different fraudulent essay writing services. Freedom of information requests submitted to every UK university show that since September 2017 a total of 528,000 emails from those 55 email addresses had been delivered to inboxes they control. Only 84 per cent of universities responded, and only 55 specific email addresses known to be behind such services were surveyed, so the real total is likely to be higher.

“These websites are a black market for students and undermine the quality of our degrees,” says Sam Gyimah, the universities minister “They are normalising cheating, potentially on an industrial scale, and I have been very clear that social media sites have a moral responsibility to take action against the promotion of these companies.”

“I expect universities to take steps to tackle this issue and to make it clear to students that taking short cuts only hurts them in the long run. Alongside the Office for Students, we will use every lever at our disposal to stamp out this harmful practice.”

The half a million emails were targeted on the 115,740 students from China , Hong Kong and Taiwan studying at British universities. Chinese students make up the largest proportion of foreign students at UK universities, overtaking the number of students from all EU countries combined five years ago.

The emails – written in Mandarin – are direct and to the point. “The legendary paper writer to help you stay in school,” one company markets itself. They also offer a “no plagiarism guarantee” that the essay will make it through Turnitin, a plagiarism detection program many universities employ to prevent students copying sections of their work from the internet. The emails also boast of 100 per cent pass rates, and achieving a 2:1 standard 83 per cent of the time.

The standard charge for a 5,000 word essay is around 5,000 renminbi (£566), with discounts offered for longer pieces of work.

Most alarming is the blatant way they’re advertised. Many of the email addresses could be easily blocked by a simple spam filter as they contain Chinese phrases such as “lunwenuk” (essays UK) and “ukbestlunwen” (UK best essays).

“It’s fairly obvious from the types of emails they’re targeting certain types of students – perhaps those who might be vulnerable and willing to buy coursework,” Lancaster says. “The companies know that: they’re using languages that might not be picked up by spam filters, and phrases that the students would know.”

In an answer to the FOI request, Imperial College London – where Thomas Lancaster is based – says that none of its students received emails from the essay mills' accounts.

Newcastle University – from where the original corpus of 55 emails was obtained – received the most emails encouraging students to cheat. In all, 61,112 emails from the contentious email addresses arrived into student inboxes over the course of the year.

“Like many large organisations, we are plagued by spam emails. Just because a student receives an email does not mean they will act on it,” a spokesperson says.

“As a result of our robust essay checking service, seven students have been disciplined for using these services in the last six years. We stress the importance of academic integrity to all new students at induction.”

Second and third in the list weren’t too far behind. The University of Glasgow received 8,652 emails in the last three months, while the University of Nottingham received more than 34,000 emails in the last year.

Spokespeople for both universities say they have either banned or discouraged students using essay writing services, penalising and sanctioning students who use them. Both universities say the use of such services is rare, and condemn their use as cheating.

This is a comprehensive problem affecting most UK universities. Twenty three universities reported receiving more than 10,000 emails from the offending addresses in the last year, while only a third of universities that responded said they received no emails at all.

A spokesperson for Universities UK , an advocacy group for higher education, says: “Universities take plagiarism and cheating extremely seriously. Submitting work written by someone else is cheating and devalues the efforts of students who work hard to achieve their degrees.” The spokesperson declined to comment specifically on whether universities should be doing more to prevent these emails reaching students’ inboxes in the first place.

But who is writing the essays some students are paying for? One man connected with an essay writing service advertised through the emails, who asked not to be named, says he started writing essays five years ago when he was a student in the UK.

“I’m an essay dealer,” he says. “You know car dealers, drug dealers? I’m an essay dealer.”

He claims to oversee 80 essay writers operating in the UK and abroad, who overall earn £226,000 a year. “We have many types of advertising methods,” he says. As well as emailing university student’s inboxes directly, companies also advertise their services through Chinese social networks including WeChat, Tencent and QQ.

The essay writer explains that he posts signs in Mandarin advertising his services in shops, Chinese restaurants, and even on university property, confident that they will not be understood by western academic staff.

“It’s one of these areas within the whole contract cheating industry that’s not being discussed,” says Lancaster. “I’ve heard of companies starting to call students on the phone. We already know advertising targets students on social media, and business cards are handed out. Spam email is one area they’re clearly having success with.”

“There’s no consequence for people like us,” the essay writer says. “The students have risks, if the tutors find out those assignments were written by someone else. But for people like us, there are no risks.”

He even claims that the business is beneficial to the UK. “We have many UK writers that write for us,” he says. “Some of them can’t find a good job. They want to sit at home and just write some essays and this way can help them afford their expenses. People like me provide the employment opportunity for them.”

UkEssays.com was my second choice for a term paper since the first company delivered a horrible one. However, this one was even worse than the first one. Finally, I decided to sit down and write it myself since I already spent a fortune on these two services and got no money back from either.

Good prices, but very bad quality. I think my writer wasn’t even a native english speaker. Got a C because of the grammar mistakes and typos.

Writers here are not native English speakers! I paid a fair amount for my paper, and it looks like an English beginner wrote it. The mistakes in it are irreparable!

The writing service is not as cheap as they say. Additionally, the quality of their papers is not as great as advertised. Overall, I would never use the services of UK Essays ever again.

I tried the services of UKEssays, but I was highly disappointed. The prices were extremely high and the quality was well below expectations. Additionally, my deadline was not met; I received my essay 3 days after the deadline.

This has to be the worst ever writing service in history. Honestly, you'd be better off failing than using this service. It's owned by a bunch of robots who are non-academics and know nothing about writing. They'll mess up your work a million times whilst promising that they will refer it to the "best available writer" but they'll continue to mess up. They can only produce average work if the research question is simple but otherwise, they'll just paraphrase large amounts of generic text and discuss some of the things you asked them to address without citing it. Honestly, save your money and just do the work yourself.

DO NOT BUY FROM THEM ITS A SCAM

I paid over £200 for a paper that did not even receive a passing grade. I had to go through the paper and remove the subheadings as they were inappropriate for the type of paper and add hyperlinks to all the sources. The paper was graded 20/100 so was a fail. Once I wrote to UKwritings to request a refund as stated on their website as a lot of the information included in the paper was irrelevant to the question, the customer service was awful. I kept getting the same email as a response at least 5 times. I had to jump through hoops to prove the paper uploaded was the paper given to me. Once I had proven this they offered me 10% off a next order (which you get anyway for your first paper) as if I would pay hundreds of pounds for another failing paper. When I pointed out that the instructions given for the assessment were not followed once again they have been sending the same email over and over again. The customer service is awful, they don’t care about you passing, they will only post their positive reviews.

This is an excellent site for students under pressure (for various reasons) when writing essays. This site has definitely the right skill mix and will meet any demand for an essay with the right expertise. My essay was done witihin the deadline of two weeks and was well-written. 'If I go, I know they will detain me': Asylum seekers consider skipping Home Office meetings over Rwanda fears

As the Home Office begins warning people they're being considered for deportation to Rwanda, Sky News has spoken to asylum seekers who say they now fear going to routine appointments. Others wish they didn't come to the UK in the first place.

In June 2022, Kidus, 30, from Eritrea, came to the UK in a small boat with around two dozen other people.

He still has the video on his phone showing everyone - including some women and children - clinging on to the dinghy wearing identical red lifejackets.

Back then, the government had already announced plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda .

Despite being sent a letter warning he's being considered for removal, he's never thought it could really happen until now.

Kidus - not his real name - says before he left France , one of the people smugglers reassured him the government wouldn't go through with it: the Rwanda policy simply wouldn't affect him.

But earlier this month, one of his friends from Eritrea, who was on the same boat across the Channel, was detained when attending a routine appointment with the Home Office at a site in Liverpool.

As a result, Kidus is now considering not going to his next fortnightly meeting, even though attending the appointments is a condition of his immigration bail.

"If I didn't go there, I know they'll drop my case," he tells us, concerned his asylum application will be cancelled.

But he adds: "If I go I know they will detain me. So, I'm just confused what I'm going to do."

A document drawn up by Home Office officials revealed only 2,143 of the 5,700 asylum seekers Rwanda has agreed to accept actually attend check-ins and "can be located for detention".

If people like Kidus stop attending, they will join the remaining 3,557 migrants who are currently missing.

The shared house Kidus lives in is paid for by the Home Office - so his address makes it almost impossible to disappear. But this means he knows he could be detained at any time.

"I'm always just frightened here. So, they might come at night or day and I'm always thinking that they'll come and they'll take me to detention. I'm not feeling safe here," he says.

Kidus has stopped attending college where he was learning English and carries the phone numbers of legal firms with him at all times.

He speaks to his friend on the phone - who is now being held in a detention centre near London.

Nahom, not his real name, 26, estimates he's among around 40 asylum seekers there who've been told they'll be sent to Rwanda.

"It's like a nightmare, it's like a prison and I don't like it here. I'm really stressed and panicked about the situation," Nahom tells us from the site almost 100 miles away.

He admits he has been able to meet his solicitor but says he's feeling increasingly desperate about being faced with the prospect of being sent to Rwanda .

"They can send my body, but not me alive," he says. "I'm just giving up."

In west London, we meet Nura, in her 20s, whose real name is withheld and who has made the decision to keep attending meetings with the Home Office because she doesn't want to be kicked out of her taxpayer-funded hotel.

But each time she goes to sign in she's terrified of being detained.

"Sometimes I say 'why me'?" she asks tearfully, looking at her "notice of intent" letter warning her she's being considered for removal to Rwanda.

"It's not a safe country," she adds. "What is the difference from Eritrea? It's the same."

Nura says when she came to the UK by small boat, she believed women wouldn't be sent to Rwanda. She says she wouldn't have come if she'd known she was at risk.

Kidus says the same thing: "If I'd have known this I'd have never come here." He added he'd have instead gone to "Belgium or France, or Germany maybe".

Now they're here, their only hope is they won't be chosen for detention.

The government remains determined to get the first flights to Rwanda within weeks.

Ahead of a general election, the plan has become a clear dividing line between the Conservatives and Labour, which has vowed to scrap the scheme if it comes to power.

UK engineering group Arup lost HK$200mn ($25mn) after fraudsters used a digitally cloned version of a senior manager to order financial transfers during a video conference, the Financial Times has learned.

Hong Kong police previously revealed what is one of the world’s biggest known deepfake scams, but did not identify the company involved. The FT has confirmed it was Arup, which employs about 18,000 people globally and has annual revenues of more than £2bn.

The case highlights the threat posed by deepfakes — hyper-realistic video, audio or other material generated using artificial intelligence — when used by cyber criminals to target companies or governments.

Two people familiar with the matter told the FT this month that Arup had been the target of the scam, which Hong Kong police have classified as “obtaining property by deception”.

Asked about the case, Arup said the company had in January “notified the police about an incident of fraud in Hong Kong”.

“We can confirm that fake voices and images were used,” the company said, declining to give details because the incident was still being investigated. “Our financial stability and business operations were not affected and none of our internal systems were compromised,” it said.

Hong Kong police acting senior superintendent Baron Chan told local media in February that a member of staff at the targeted company had received a message purporting to be from the UK-based chief financial officer regarding a “confidential transaction”.

After a video conference joined by the company’s digitally cloned CFO and other fake company employees, Chan said, the staff member made a total of 15 transfers to five Hong Kong bank accounts before eventually discovering it was a scam upon following up with the group’s headquarters.

The police said investigations into the case continued, with no arrests so far.

Arup’s east Asia chair Andy Lee stepped down in the weeks following the scam after just a year in the role. He was replaced by Michael Kwok, a former east Asia chair for the company. Lee said on his personal LinkedIn page that he had “decided to embark on a new opportunity”. Lee did not respond to a request for comment made via LinkedIn and Arup declined to comment further on his departure.

The FT reported this month that international advertising agency WPP had been the target of an unsuccessful deepfake scam in which criminals used a voice clone and YouTube footage to set up a video meeting with executives.

Liu Meng, an analyst with consultancy Forrester, said many companies, banks and legislators lacked awareness of new forms of scam such as those using deepfakes.

“Corporates need to purchase more IT solutions to counter cyber security scams [and] banks need to alert their clients on suspicious payments when the money is about to be wired,” Liu said, adding that laws should be passed to ensure banks shared more in financial losses from fraud.

Arup’s global chief information officer Rob Greig said in a statement that the number and sophistication of deepfake and other scams had been “rising sharply” in recent months.

“I hope our experience can help raise awareness of the increasing sophistication and evolving techniques of bad actors,” Greig said.

Parasite-infested water safe to drink again after causing explosive diarrhoea

Thousands of households in the Brixham area of Devon can now safely use and drink their tap water without having to boil it first, South West Water (SWW) has said.

Around 14,500 households in the Alston supply area can now use their tap water safely.

Although 2,500 properties in Hillhead, upper parts of Brixham and Kingswear should continue to boil it.

Hundreds are feared to have fallen ill after parasitic bug cryptosporidium, which causes severe stomach issues, entered the underground reservoir through a damaged air valve in a cattle field.

SWW chief customer officer Laura Flowerdew said: ‘Following rigorous testing this week, it is now safe to lift the boil water notice in the Alston water supply area.

‘This decision has been supported by the Government ’s public health experts and the local authority’s environmental health department.

‘This situation has caused an immense amount of disruption, distress and anxiety. We are truly sorry this has happened.

‘The public rightly expect a safe, clean and reliable source of drinking water and on this occasion, we have fallen significantly short of expectations. We will not stop working until this has been fully resolved.

‘With the boil water notice still in place in Hillhead, upper parts of Brixham and Kingswear, we are urging customers who are unsure if they are still affected to visit the postcode checker on our website or call us so we can check for them.’

The decision to declare the drinking water safe was made in consultation with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the local authority’s environmental health department.

Laura Flowerdew, SWW’s chief customer officer, told Sky News: ‘We have identified that there is a damaged air valve on our network just near the Hillhead reservoir.

‘We absolutely want to make sure that that is the only source and therefore are just ensuring that we’ve gone through all the right operational procedures.’

Asked if it was animal faeces that infiltrated the network, she told the broadcaster: ‘We understand that this is a valve on one of the pipes that head towards the Hillhead reservoir, not on the reservoir itself.

What Happens When Abusive Parents Keep Their Children

In February 2023, Phoenix Castro was born in San Jose, Calif., suffering from neonatal opioid withdrawal after being exposed to fentanyl and methamphetamine in her mother’s womb.

Her mother was sent to jail and then ended up at a drug treatment facility. But her father, who had multiple drug arrests, was allowed to take the newborn to his San Jose apartment, even though a social worker had warned that the baby would be at “very high” risk if she was sent home. The county’s child protection agency had already removed the couple’s two older children because of neglect.

Three months later, Phoenix was dead from an overdose of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

The ensuing uproar, chronicled in detail by The Mercury News, focused on new efforts by the county to keep at-risk families together. In the past, children often would be removed from unsafe homes and placed in foster care, and newborns like Phoenix in all likelihood would not have been sent home.

Those policy changes led to a “ significant ” drop in removals of children from troubled homes in the San Jose area, according to the state’s social services agency. They reflected a larger shift in child welfare thinking nationwide that has upended the foster care system. Reducing the number of children placed in foster care has been hailed as an achievement. But leaving children in families with histories of abuse and neglect to avoid the trauma of removing them has had tragic results.

We need to ask whether avoiding foster care, seemingly at all costs — especially for children in families mired in violence, addiction or mental illness — is too often compromising their safety and welfare.

The use of foster care has been in decline even as more children are dying from abuse and neglect in their homes. In recent years, the number of children in foster care fell by nearly 16 percent while the fatality rate from abuse and neglect rose by almost 18 percent. Many factors were and are at work, among them caseworker inexperience, a lack of resources and the high bars for removing children from their homes that have been erected by child welfare agencies, policymakers and judges.

What is clear from a sampling of states that release fatality reports in a timely fashion is that we are seeing deaths of children in cases in which they had been allowed to remain in homes with records of violence, drug use and neglect.

In Minnesota, a children’s advocacy group’s study of 88 child fatalities in the state from 2014 to 2022 found that “many of these deaths were preventable” and were the result of a “child welfare philosophy which gave such high priority to the interests of parents and other adults in households, as well as to the goals of family preservation and reunification, that child safety and well-being were regularly compromised.”

The prioritization of family preservation has been advanced by states and the federal government and by the nation’s largest foundation focused on reducing the need for foster care, Casey Family Programs.

Three ideas seem to have guided the effort: the child welfare system is plagued by systemic racial bias, adults should not be punished for drug addiction, and a majority of children in the system are simply in need of financial support and social services.

This effort was bolstered in 2018 with the passage by Congress of the Family First Prevention Services Act , which enables states to use federal funds “to provide enhanced support to children and families and prevent foster care placements through the provision of mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment services” and other programs.

The push certainly has been well-intentioned. There was a sense that child welfare authorities had overreacted to concerns about a crack baby epidemic in the 1980s. Mothers were arrested and babies and children taken away. The number of children in foster care more than doubled between 1985 and 2000. There was also deep concern — concern that persists — that Black children in particular were bearing the brunt of being removed from their homes and sent to foster care, which can cause its own upheaval for children.

In some states, the reductions in the number of children in foster care were drastic. But there are limits to how much those numbers can be reduced without putting children in grave danger.

In Santa Clara County, Calif., where Phoenix Castro died, an inquiry the previous year by the California Department of Social Services into the county’s child protection agency found “multiple” instances of “children placed into protective custody by law enforcement,” only to have the county agency “immediately” place “the children back in the care of the unsafe parent.” (In what appears to be an about-face by the county, The Mercury News reported that in the last two months of 2023, the number of children removed from their homes was triple the two-month average for the previous months of that year.)

In an email to Santa Clara County’s Department of Family and Children’s Services staff in 2021, explaining the new emphasis on keeping families together, the director at the time described the move as part of the county’s strong commitment “to racial justice and to healing the historical wounds underlying disproportionate representation of children of color in the child welfare system.”

As much as racial disparities in foster care are deeply troubling — Black children are twice as likely as white children to spend time in foster care — Black children also suffer fatalities from abuse and neglect at three times the rate of white children. Which means that policies intended to reduce disproportionality by reducing foster care may actually be resulting in more deaths of Black children.

Foster care is not a panacea. The trauma children suffer from suddenly being removed from their home and their siblings, to be placed in a strange home with a caregiver they don’t know, is well documented. But the alternative, allowing a child to remain in a dangerous home, should never be an alternative.

Below are tips to note to ace essay topics if you are choosing the essay question:

What type of essay

It might be impossible to guess what type of essay will be written for the examination as there are different types. There is a narrative essay, which is always reported in the past, except for where someone is being quoted or special grammatical exceptions like when a verb follows 'to' or the modal verbs.

Argumentative essays or debate questions might require a student to take a stance either for or against a given topic. While partly the same, the latter requires greeting and acknowledgement of the participant.

Barring informal letters , all other forms of essay questions require a heading. Whether it is an expository, argumentative, narrative, or formal essay, the heading is compulsory.

In letters, the heading always comes after the salutation - not before it.

It is important to note that the question can never be the heading. It is wrong to rewrite the question verbatim as the subject of the letter or essay.

Read the question well

Don't just jump into writing. Read and understand the question thoroughly. Ensure you have gotten all that the examiner is seeking. For the part where you are required to write about causes and effects, don't be too carried away in the causes that you forget the effect part.

Make an Outline

It is very advisable that you jot down points somewhere at the back of your booklets—points that you will later develop when you start writing. Jot the points down in the order you want them in paragraphs, and let them be your guiding light.

Brief Introduction

At most, three paragraphs. The introduction should not be too long. And remember to declare your intention or goal in the introduction.

Body of the paragraph

This is where you start to develop the points you have noted down before you begin the writing. You make it a point per paragraph. All are linked together by conjunctions like firstly, secondly, however, moreover, in conclusion, etc. Also, remember to input the topic sentence in each paragraph. The topic sentence states the key point of the whole paragraph.

This, like the introduction, should be brief and straightforward. Summarise all that you have written in the body of the piece.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) had said 84.38% of the candidates who sat the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in Nigeria obtained credits.
