Maths is the study of quantity, area, space, and change. Mathematicians consider that the universe cannot be read until we have learned the language and become familiar with the characters in which it is written. It is written mathematical language, and the letters are triangles, circles and other geometrical figures, without which means it is humanly impossible to comprehend a single word. Without these, one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth.

For this tutorial, I’ll use the premium Math Lesson PowerPoint template from Envato Elements. This template has a modern and playful design that'll make any hard math topic easier to follow.
1. Install Theme Colors
First things first: the Math Lesson template comes with premade color schemes that need to be installed.
To do this, unzip your template folder and open the Color subfolder. Select all the files and copy them.
Then, if you use Windows computer, navigate to C:\Users\?Username?\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes . Paste the copied files in there.
If you’re using a Mac computer, paste the copied files to: MacintoshHD\Users:YourUserName\Library\Group Containers\ UBF8T346G9.Office \User Content\Themes\Theme Colors
Without doing this, the premade color schemes won’t display. So it’s important to do this step before opening up your PowerPoint template.
2. Select Your Slides
Once you’ve installed the color themes, open your template in PowerPoint. Then, under the View tab, select Slide Sorter view. Right click on a slide you don’t want to use and press Delete . Repeat this process for every slide you don’t plan on using.
3. Add Your Content
Switch back to Normal view and start adding your content. All you've got to do is double-click the text, press CTRL+A to highlight all of it, and then type in the content for that slide.
4. Insert Images
The Math Lesson PowerPoint template comes with image placeholders that make adding images a breeze.
Double-click the picture icon on an image placeholder and locate the image you want to use on your computer. Press Insert . Then, repeat this process for every other image placeholder.
5. Change the Colors
The last step in customizing your presentation is to change colors. Switch to the Design tab and click the Variants drop-down. Then, select your preferred color scheme.

This article is the latest part of the FT’s Financial Literacy and Inclusion Campaign
Teenagers in rich countries lack the financial literacy and maths skills needed to prepare them for the digital economy, according to an OECD report.
Despite growing numbers opening bank accounts and showing an interest in cryptocurrencies, the majority of 15-year-olds in the Pisa study, published on Thursday , struggled to understand key financial terms and a fifth found it difficult to calculate percentages.
Experts say this underlines a persistent gap between young people’s financial knowledge and the increasingly vast range of products that they are being exposed to online.
“There is a moving target in terms of the skills that are needed to achieve basic financial literacy,” said Carmine Di Noia, OECD director for financial and enterprise affairs. “These are uncharted territories. Ten years ago we wouldn’t have talked about crypto or AI or finfluencers [financial influencers].”
You are seeing a snapshot of an interactive graphic. This is most likely due to being offline or JavaScript being disabled in your browser.
The study explored the links between teenagers’ financial literacy and their competency in maths and reading, as well as their money experiences, habits and exposure to financial literacy at home and in school.
Across the 14 OECD countries within the 20 nations surveyed — including the US, Italy and the Netherlands — an average of 18 per cent of teens had difficulties using division to handle their finances.
These low-performing students struggled with everyday spending decisions, such as calculating whether buying tomatoes by the box or kilogramme was better value.
The report also found that although about two-thirds of teens in the 14 OECD nations were financially active and had opened bank accounts, just 36 per cent of those surveyed were confident about reading bank statements.
There has been limited improvement in financial literacy in the four countries — the US, Italy, Spain and Poland — that have taken part in the Pisa test since it first began in 2012.
In each of the four countries, more than one in seven students still lacks basic money skills, based on the 2022 findings.
Meanwhile, just 11 per cent of students from all the 20 nations involved could solve complex money problems, spot transaction costs, or understand the differences in types of investments.
The report urged countries to implement a financial literacy strategy and improve education in schools, highlighting the importance of strong consumer protection frameworks and educating parents.
Only a third of adults are financially literate, according to research published by the OECD last year.
Karen Holland, a teacher and founder of the Gifting Sense financial literacy programme, said parents had an important role in teaching children “powerful and therefore sticky life skills” such as thinking before they buy. “The gold standard is a combination of parents and schools developing their money habits and beliefs,” she added.

Only 14 of the 38 OECD countries that take part in the headline Pisa tests on maths, reading and science participate in the financial literacy assessments.
The UK is one of the countries that has opted out, with policymakers arguing it has limited value as most of the variation in pupil performance is explained by maths attainment.
Charities such as the FT’s Financial Literacy and Inclusion Campaign (Flic) and parliamentary groups such as England’s education committee have said financial education needs to be improved and recommended the UK take part in the 2025 assessments.
John Jerrim, professor of education and social statistics at University College London, said the UK had opted out of the financial literacy assessment to reduce the burden on reluctant schools, creating a “big data gap”.
“We really don’t know enough about financial literacy in this country,” he added. “These are absolutely key skills that kids need to know about.”

Opponents of St. Petersburg’s deal with the Tampa Bay Rays to build a new stadium and mixed-use development in the Gas Plant District have advocated for months that the site is easily worth 4 to 5 times as much as the negotiated price if the City Council would just jettison the deal.
Last month, I wrote a guest column published in the Tampa Bay Times explaining the negotiated price from a real estate developer’s perspective. The negotiated price between the city and the Rays and their development partner Hines reflects the promised mix of uses and community benefits. It includes a new 30,000-seat stadium, 1,250 affordable housing units, 10 to 14 acres of public open space, 1.4 million square feet of office and research space, 750 new hotel rooms, 600 senior housing units, land for a new African American history museum and numerous other public benefits.
I estimated an average value of $8 million per acre of developable land across all of the proposed uses in the Rays/Hines plan, after eliminating the portions of the project site which support no land value, such as interior roadways, parks and open space and affordable housing. My estimate of average value is based on two recent land sales each one block away on either side of the Gas Plant site, currently home to Tropicana Field where the Rays play home games.
A couple weeks ago in the Times, leaders of NoHomeRun.com disputed my explanation and doubled down on their promise that the 86-acre site would generate at least $700 million in revenue for the city. They argue that arm’s length transactions “in the immediate vicinity” support an average valuation of at least $20 million per acre.
Let’s take a look at the “comparable transactions” they provide as a basis for their valuation:
— 155 17th St. S., a 0.77-acre parcel near Interstate 275 that sold for the equivalent of $11.8 million per acre has been approved for a 23-story apartment tower with 300+ units (This is the most comparable site and location).
— 226 Sixth St. S., a 0.92-acre development site sold for the equivalent of $22 million per acre. It is approved for a 22-story apartment tower with 336 units, and is eight blocks closer to Tampa Bay than the center of the Gas Plant site, offering views of Tampa Bay above five to seven stories, an amenity the Gas Plant site will not offer.
— 275 First Ave. S., a 0.63-acre site is located on Central Avenue between Second and Third streets, three blocks from Tampa Bay, and sold for $31.3 million per acre. It has a different and more intense zoning than the Gas Plant site and is currently under construction for the 42-story Arthouse luxury condominium. It’s not accurate to describe this property as in the “immediate vicinity” or comparable in any way to future development sites in the Gas Plant District.
There is a pretty noticeable pattern here. Every one of these sites selling for top dollar is less than 1-acre in size and will be developed for a high-rise condominium or market rate rental apartment building 20 to 42 stories in height. To achieve this valuation, the Gas Plant District would become a sea of high-rise market-rate residential towers. Imagine a 20-plus story building on every block and compare that with the eclectic mix of uses, building heights and sizes that make downtown St. Petersburg unique and special today. It’s a fantasy to think that St Petersburg residents would allow that to happen.

Further, these sites are each smaller than 1-acre (smaller sites sell for higher prices per acre than larger sites). As I explained in detail in my last column, by the time the city patiently markets and sells 50+ individual development parcels as recommended by NoHomeRun, our grandchildren (or great-grandchildren) could be managing the project.
Let’s also compare the alternate vision proposed by NoHomeRun with the mix of uses included in the Rays/Hines plan. No new office towers have been developed in downtown St. Petersburg for more than 30 years, precisely because the numbers don’t work with these high land values driven by residential towers. The owner of a new office tower wouldn’t be able to charge enough rent to recoup the construction cost and other expenses.
The Rays/Hines plan for the Gas Plant District promises 1.4 million square feet of new office, medical or research space, generating much-needed employment opportunities for St. Petersburg residents. While NoHomeRun promises that their vision assumes the city retains the same general levels of residential and commercial development density as seen in the Rays/Hines plan, that promise is simply not feasible on land sold for $20 million per acre.
The NoHomeRun authors likewise assure us that their alternative will achieve the same community benefits that are included in the Rays/Hines agreement with the city — mandatory charitable contributions, minority contractor guarantees, apprenticeship and job training, retail assistance and other off-market obligations. However, their valuation model is based on historical sales of land between private property owners and developers without any of these mandates or community benefits. Adding those requirements to each land sale will materially reduce the value a developer will pay the city for land relative to sites without these mandates.
The bottom line is that this vision of “do it ourselves” development simply doesn’t add up. It’s not feasible to achieve the same mix of uses proposed in the Rays/Hines plan with the same mandated community benefits and to sell individual development parcels for values that are supported only by high-rise residential construction with no such public benefit requirements.
If the St. Petersburg City Council fails to find a way to reach final agreement on the Rays/Hines proposal, we really don’t know what will replace it or when. The “do it ourselves” development approach is not a concrete alternative; it’s basically a concept with tremendous uncertainty. It’s highly unlikely to generate the “sure-thing” value promised by NoHomeRun once the values are adjusted to reflect a balanced development plan acceptable to city residents. Any of the following could just as easily occur:
— Developers are uninterested in bidding for individual sites because they don’t like the city’s vision or are skeptical of the city government’s capacity to deliver the entire project.
— Future City Councils cannot agree on a plan or process for developing the site.
— Citizens groups lobby future leaders to make the entire 86 acres a park or reserve it for another purely public use generating no new property tax revenue.
I personally understand and respect opponents that, for philosophical reasons, don’t believe governments should subsidize professional sports stadiums. The NoHomeRun group, on the other hand, is misleading the citizens of St. Petersburg to think that there is some type of fiscal bonanza awaiting if the City Council does not approve this deal. Absent a concrete offer from a qualified developer to acquire the site for much more than the price negotiated between the city and Rays/Hines, this argument is pure speculation.
The proposal on the table is much more than just a stadium deal. The Rays have been transparent that the profits generated by the real estate development opportunity are needed to make the team viable for the long term in St. Petersburg. They have partnered with one of the most qualified master developers of major mixed-use projects worldwide. The combination of a new Tampa Bay Rays ballpark and dynamic mixed-use project that reflects input garnered from both residents and businesses over the last 10 years has the potential to be the real home run for the city of St Petersburg.
Jay Miller has been a real estate developer for 25 years. He has a master’s degree in urban planning and public policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He lives in St. Petersburg.

Ex-teacher, who avoided jail for loaded gun on campus, arrested after missed therapy sessions
Robert krasnicki was rearrested after he failed to complete mental health treatment in the wake of his conviction..
WEST PALM BEACH — A former Royal Palm Beach High School math teacher who brought a loaded gun to campus violated his probation, rupturing a second deal with prosecutors that would have spared him from jail entirely.
Deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office re-arrested Robert Krasnicki this month after he failed to complete the mental health treatment required of him by the end of his six-month probation. Circuit Judge Caroline Shepherd sentenced Krasnicki to 30 days in jail Wednesday in exchange for his guilty plea, with credit for two weeks.
This week's deal was the third made between state prosecutors and Krasnicki's team of public defenders, which included Palm Beach County Public Defender Carey Haughwout. The first promised to have Assistant State Attorney Samuel Farot drop Krasnicki's felony charge for carrying a weapon on school property if he obeyed certain conditions for one year — including not breaking the law.
The math teacher tested positive for cocaine within four months of the agreement, Farot told the judge at a hearing in October.
Post investigation: School police warned about teacher's guns years before arrest with loaded gun on campus
The State Attorney's Office resumed its prosecution of Krasnicki, who faced up to five years in prison for the felony charge. In December, Farot dropped the charge and replaced it with a misdemeanor: violating a concealed-carry permit, punishable by up to 60 days in jail.
Farot called the amended charge "quite frankly the only way to resolve this" during last year's hearing and said the principal and school police agreed with his reasoning. Krasnicki pleaded guilty to the amended charge in exchange for six months of probation.
He told Shepherd on Wednesday that he missed an over-the-phone therapy session — one of the few he had left — and could not immediately pay the penalty fee necessary to reschedule. By the time he collected enough money and booked a new appointment, Shepherd had signed off on a warrant for his arrest.
The judge said she was hesitant to accept Krasnicki's plea deal Wednesday because it did not require further mental health treatment. She changed her mind after Haughwout and Krasnicki testified about his good behavior while on probation.
"I don't have any concerns about you accepting this plea," Shepherd told him at the conclusion of the hearing. "Good luck. Don't come back."
Math teacher armed himself, made bizarre claims about ex-girlfriend
Krasnicki became the subject of investigation on Jan. 19, 2023, after he parked his motorcycle in front of Royal Palm Beach High School's north gate. When asked to move it, Krasnicki told a school police officer that he'd ridden it to school because his ex-girlfriend cut the brake lines on his car and was trying to spy on him through his phone.
The officer asked Krasnicki to accompany him to JFK North Hospital for a voluntary mental health evaluation. The teacher agreed, then said he had a 9 mm handgun in his waistband and a pocket knife with a 3½-inch blade.
He was held for two days in the Palm Beach County Jail on two felony charges — one for the gun, another for the knife — before he bonded out. Circuit Judge Kirk Volker granted a temporary order for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office to remove Krasnicki's weapons.
Though the January arrest was Krasnicki’s first documented run-in with school police, other law enforcement agencies had alerted school officials to gun-related incidents nearly four years earlier, and again two months before his arrest. Documents obtained by The Palm Beach Post indicate that school police did little to act on those concerns.
In a message to parents after Krasnicki's arrest, Royal Palm Beach High Principal Michelle Fleming said the math teacher made no threats against students or school staff, but added that "possession of weapons on School District property is a felony and a violation of the District's Zero Tolerance Policy."
Krasnicki resigned from the school district in January 2023.
