John Papendick: Presentation College football team leaves it all on the field

On a wickedly windy day at Swisher Field in Aberdeen that featured a marriage proposal, Presentation College saved its best for last as the Saints nearly upset Dakota State in the 2021 football finale.

With two touchdowns and a safety, Dakota State won 16-14 on Nov. 13, but the proud Saints (0-11) seemed to play as if they were going for an undefeated season and a spot in the NAIA playoffs. In the final seconds, Presentation kicker Luiz Ferreira made a great attempt at an unsuccessful 55-yard field goal that would have won the game.

It seemed to be one of the few things that went wrong for Ferreira and the Saints on the day. Before the game, the Presentation senior proposed to girlfriend and fellow Saints student-athlete Lexi Boone, a soccer player. She said yes, according to the Presentation College athletics website, and Ferreira went on to make two point-after-touchdown kicks. Also, three of his nine punts went 71, 61 and 60 yards. The Saints' two touchdowns came from Breken Green, one on a pass from Hunter Griffrow.

The Saints’ final effort is a great testament to the players — especially the seniors, the coaching staff and Presentation's young football program that played its 11th season this fall. The Saints are 38-71 since their first game on Sept. 3, 2011. That was a 39-13 loss to Trinity Bible College. Presentation's first-ever win was 28-6 over Martin Luther on Oct. 1, 2011.

Here are some other sporting things I know:

Earlier this month, Vermillion native Maddie Lavin led the University of South Dakota women’s triathlon team to third in the nation. The host school, Arizona State, won the college national championships for the fifth year in a row. Covering the event for her now newspaper, the Arizona Republic, was former American News sports reporter Jenna Ortiz.

Yes, Augustana is adding men’s Division I hockey in 2023-24. But did you know that the Vikings will add women’s acrobatics and tumbling in spring 2023 and women’s lacrosse in 2023-24?

Also, did you know that Mount Marty in Yankton offers multiple co-ed sports: archery, shotgun, cheer and dance?

Three-time University of South Dakota football captain Jack Cochrane recently became the seventh player in school history to record more than 300 career tackles. The two other members of that club are Groton native Todd Pharis (306 from 1981-84) and Watertown native Craig Austin (331 from 1978-81).

Even though they were both losses, USD senior and women’s basketball captain Chloe Lamb of Onida and her teammates started their season in a memorable way. First, they lost 73-71 to the Oklahoma Sooners in Vermillion on Nov. 9 and then to No. 1-rated South Carolina 72-41 in Sioux Falls on Nov. 12. Lamb had 28 points in the two games.

In the last five seasons, the Pierre football team is 50-9, including a 28-3 home record, with five straight Class 11AA state titles. Meanwhile in the last four seasons, the Winner senior class of football players has gone 25-1 at home while the Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan seniors have gone 23-1 at home.

Junior Paiton Burckhard of Aberdeen surpassed 1,000 points in her South Dakota State  University basketball career, but the Jackrabbits were nipped by Mississippi State 76-71 in Starkville on Nov. 12. She became the 40th member of her school’s 1,000-point club, and joined teammates Myah Selland of Letcher and Tyler Irwin of Wahpeton, N.D., on the list.

The College World Series starts June 14, but baseball’s Super Regionals lead fans into the most exciting matchups June 7-10. The Super Regionals feature 16 teams reduced from the field of 64 teams competing for the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.

The recently concluded Regional Round was the most watched college baseball regional round ever, and up 16% from last year and 59% from 2022.

Betting on the college baseball regionals has also increased, and there are a variety of storylines to follow as you watch and wager on college baseball on the road to the College World Series in Omaha.

Seven of the top eight national seeds advanced to the Super Regionals, and 10 of the 16 national seeds won their own regionals.

The SEC tops the Super Regional field with five teams, but not Arkansas, who was 34-3 at home and the highest-ranked team ahead of the regionals to not make the Super Regionals.

Three of the four most recent national champions were all eliminated last round as well - LSU, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. Other recent national champions over the past decade are still alive - Oregon State (2018), Florida (2017) and Virginia (2015).

Rick Neuheisel, a former college football coach and host of college sports radio on SiriusXM (channel 84) talked with college baseball journalist Patrick Ebert Wednesday and asked him “what team will benefit the most with home field?”

Ebert noted Tennessee’s strength, power, attitude and swagger, and Texas A&M’s strong home crowd and offensive versatility. He added that Kentucky’s ability to steal bases and manufactur runs allows the “home team to feed off the crowd better with manufactured offense.”

College Baseball Team Notes

Added team notes from 24/7 sports and top MLB prospects on each team.

Tennessee is the No. 1 overall seed and won all three regional round games by at least six runs. The Volunteers went 38-3 at home in Knoxville this season, and Tennessee is making its fourth-consecutive super regional but shooting for its first College World Series appearance during that stretch. Tennessee’s 159 home runs leads the nation, and the Vols big bats will try to help them reach the CWS. A No. 1 overall seed hasn’t won the College World Series since 1999 and only two others even made the finals.

  • Billy Amick - 3B
  • Christian Moore - 2B
  • Drew Beam - RHP
  • Blake Burke - 1B
  • Kavares Tears - OF
  • Dylan Dreiling - OF

Texas A&M is in the Super Regionals for the second time in three years, and the Aggies set the program record for most home runs in a season with 129. Top-10 Major League Baseball prospect Braden Montgomery hit 27 HR’s this season including one in the College Station Regional, where he was named MVP. Hot temperatures in Texas near 95 degrees for the A&M - Oregon series.

  • Braden Montgomery - OF
  • Ryan Prager - LHP
  • Chris Cortez - RHP

North Carolina ’s loaded lineup and elite bats make them one to watch as a national title hopeful. The Tar Heels went 35-3 at home this season.

  • Vance Honeycut - OF

Kentucky makes its second-straight Super Regional appearance, and hosts its first-ever Super Regional. The Wildcats tied for 1st place in the SEC this season.

  • Ryan Waldschmidt - OF

Clemson meets Florida in baseball for the first time since 1983. Former Clemson assistant Kevin O'Sullivan is Florida’s head coach. Clemson has hosted the Super Regionals four times (2000-2010), and advanced to the College World Series each time.

  • Tristan Smith - LHP

Oregon State was a top-10 team all season long, and the Beavers have an overpowering offense led by all-time program HR leader Travis Bazzana. The All-American 2B smacked two more home runs in the regional sweep and is the No. 1 MLB prospect in college baseball. Bazzana is also one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur baseball player in the U.S. Of the remaining teams, Oregon State ranks fourth in both weighted on-base average (wOBA) and wRC+ behind Tennessee, Virginia, and Georgia.

  • Travis Bazzana - 2B
  • Aiden May - RHP

Florida State ’s pitching is a potential downfall with just two pitchers sporting ERA’s under 4.24, but starter Jamie Arnold (2.45 ERA, 146 strikeouts) gives the Seminoles an edge in Game 1. Florida State ranked in the top 15 nationally in batting average, runs scored and home runs.

  • Cameron Smith - 3B
  • James Tibbs III - OF

Virginia ranks second nationally in batting average and 12th in home runs. They lack a pitching stalwart like their opponent Kansas State, which could produce a high-scoring series.

  • Griff O’Ferrall - SS
  • Ethan Anderson - C/1B

Georgia is led by Golden Spikes Award finalist Charlie Condon, who batted .445 this season for a Bulldogs team that went 32-5 at home.

  • Charlie Condon - OF/3B

NC State makes its second Super Regional appearance in the past four seasons. Graduate transfer Alec Makarewicz was named Most Outstanding Player of the Raleigh Regional, and four Wolfpack teammates made the All-Regional team.

  • Jacob Cozart - C

Florida entered the NCAA Tournament with just a 28-27 overall record. Like their opponent Clemson, each lacks top-tier pitching. But the Gators top-3 MLB prospect Jac Caglianone ranks third nationally with 31 home runs.

  • Jac Caglianone - 1B/LHP

West Virginia has just two qualified hitters over a .300 batting average and one starting pitcher with a sub-5.00 ERA, but the Mountaineers captured its first regional championship in program history.

  • JJ Wetherholt - SS/2B

Oregon went winless in the Pac 12 Tournament, but the Ducks bats came alive to support timely pitching and Oregon advanced to the Super Regionals for the second-straight season.

Kansas State has only two pitchers on the staff with an ERA below 4.00. But the Wildcats pulled off a tremendous regional upset to take down No. 5 national seed Arkansas to reach its second super regional in program history.

  • Kaelen Culpepper - SS
  • Tyson Neighbors - RHP

Connecticut was six games under .500 at the midway point of the season. Now the Huskies are in the super regionals for the second time in three years, and third time in program history. UCONN traveled more than any team in college baseball this season and didn’t play at home until their 19th game of the season. Jim Penders is in his 21st season as head coach of the UCONN program, and he’s part of the longest-tenured coaching staff in Division I baseball.

Evansville is the Cinderella team and feel good story in this year’s Super Regionals.

One final note, feel-good story and mention on retiring Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball coach John Anderson , who I admire and got to know as a walk-on and after my college years at the University of Minnesota. The winningest baseball coach in Big Ten history and 43 years as head coach at Minnesota, the 8-time Big Ten Coach of the Year led the Gophers to eight NCAA Regional appearances in a 10-year stretch in the 1990’s, and it’s first-ever Super Regional in 2018 before losing to eventual national champion Oregon State.

Anderson built a legacy at the U of M while forming lifelong relationships and touching so many lives in a positive way. For over 40 years, Anderson’s overarching philosophy has been to prepare his players “for the next 50 years of their lives.” Although winning baseball games is a crucial component in his winning formula, the primary objective has always been on improving his players as individuals and setting them up for a lifetime of success regardless of their pursuits after college.

Follow more D1 baseball updates and storylines on X as the road to Omaha and the College World Series continues. The Super Regionals is sure to create more memorable moments and exciting watch and wager action.

You can bet on it.

2024-25 Big 12 Men's Basketball Way-Too-Early Rankings

Nicholas girimonte | jun 4, 2024.

presentation college south dakota basketball division

  • TCU Horned Frogs

Now that the NBA draft withdrawal deadline has come and gone, there is a lot more clarity of how to view Big 12 Basketball for the 2024-25 season.

With so many transfers and movement, here is the Way-Too-Early Power Rankings for the stacked new Big 12 next season.

Kansas Basketball, Dajuan Harris Jr, KJ Adams Jr

After coming off one of the Jayhawks' most disappointing seasons, Bill Self has come back with arguably the best roster in the country. They were able to retain stars Hunter Dickinson , KJ Adams Jr., and Dajuan Harris Jr. Adding high-end transfers AJ Storr (Wisconsin), Zeke Mayo (South Dakota State), and Rylan Griffen (Alabama) will keep them near the top of the country.

Houston Men's Basketball, Emmanuel Sharp, LJ Cryer, J'Wan Roberts

Once LJ Cryer and J'Wan Roberts announced their return, they immediately remained one of the top teams in the country. They also keep key role players Emmanuel Sharp and Ja'vier Francis . Bringing in top transfer guard Milos Uzan from Oklahoma helps fill reigning Big 12 Player of the Year Jamal Shead 's departure.

Jayden Nunn, Baylor Men's Basketball

Even with Baylor losing four starters, Scott Drew reloaded big time. The Bears brought in an elite transfer class highlighted by Jeremy Roach (Duke) and Norchad Omier (Miami). Additionally, five-star recruit VJ Edgecombe will join returners Langston Love and Jayden Nunn in the backcourt.

4. Iowa State

Iowa State Basketball, Milan Momcilovic, Keshon Gilbert, Curtis Jones, Tamin Lipsey

The Cyclones return their top four scorers of Keshon Gilbert , Tamin Lipsey , Curtis Jones, and Milan Momcilovic . Iowa State, the reigning Big 12 champions, also added Saint Mary's star transfer Joshua Jefferson.

Caleb Love, Arizona Men's Basketball

Even after losing a lot of talent, the Wildcats retained one of the best players in the nation in Caleb Love along with KJ Lewis and Jaden Bradley ,, in the backcourt. Tommy Lloyd also added star transfers Trey Townsend (Oakland) and Anthony Dell'Orso (Campbell) to keep Arizona toward the top of college basketball.

6. Cincinnati

Day Day Thomas, Dan Skillings Jr., Cincinnati Men's Basketball

The Bearcats retained six of their top eight scorers. They also added great transfer pieces, like Connor Hickman (Bradley) and Dillon Mitchell (Texas). Do not be surprised if Wes Miller's squad is competing at the top of the Big 12.

7. Texas Tech

Darrion Williams, Chance McMillian, Texas Tech Men's Basketball

The Red Raiders return double-digit scorers Chance McMillian and Darrion Williams . Grant McCasland arguably improved on his three lost starters, bringing in a transfer class headlined by JT Toppin (New Mexico) and Elijah Hawkins (Minnesota).

Isaiah Manning, Jace Posey, TCU Men's Basketball

The Horned Frogs had an extreme roster overhaul, only returning one rotational player from last season in Ernest Udeh Jr . However, Jamie Dixon brought in an outstanding transfer class headlined by Frankie Collins (Arizona State) and Trazarien White (UNC Wilmington). This class will join redshirt freshmen Isaiah Manning and Jace Posey and the best freshman class in TCU history to create an elite group of talent that can compete for the conference.

Fousseyni Traore, Trevin Knell, BYU Men's Basketball

Even with losing Mark Pope to Kentucky, BYU was able to return key pieces of its core, including Dallin Hall , Trevin Knell, Fousseyni Traore , and Richie Saunders. Kevin Young has already added a couple of transfers and is still looking to add talent for his first year on the job.

10. Kansas State

Kansas State Men's Basketball, Jerome Tang, David N'Guessan

The only starter the Wildcats brought back is David N'Guessan , but Jerome Tang did a lot of damage in the portal. Anticipate Kansas State to be led by star Michigan guard transfer Dug McDanie l, but it will have to be seen whether all this new talent will be able to click or not.

Darius Johnson, UCF Men's Basketball

The Knights return their top two scorers of Jaylin Sellers and Darius Johnson . Adding forwards like Benny Williams (Syracuse) and Keyshawn Hall (George Mason) from the portal will keep Johnny Dawkins ' squad competitive.

12. West Virginia

Darian Devries, West Virginia Men's Basketball

New coach Darian DeVries brings in a completely new roster for the Mountaineers. His son Tucker DeVries (Drake) and Javon Small (Oklahoma State) highlight a talented transfer class that could make West Virginia a wildcard next year.

13. Arizona State

Adam Miller, Bobby Hurley, Arizona State Men's Basketball

The Sun Devils return veteran guard Adam Miller and welcome in five-star center Jayden Quaintance . A transfer class led by Alston Mason (Missouri State), BJ Freeman (Milwaukee), and Basheer Jihad (Ball State) make Arizona State an interesting team, but the lack of Big 12 experience is worrisome.

14. Oklahoma State

Bryce Thompson, Oklahoma State Men's Basketball

New coach Steve Lutz had a lot of roster turnover, returning only Bryce Thompson and Jamyron Keller as key pieces. Their massive group of transfers is led by Khalil Brantley (La Salle), Devo Davis (Arkansas), and Abou Ousmane (Xavier). There are just too many question marks with the Pokes to put them any higher.

Gabe Madsen, Utah Men's Basketball

The Utes lost five of their top six scorers and did not land the level of talent of other Big 12 teams. Craig Smith added Miro Little (Baylor) and Mason Madsen (Boston College), Gabe Madsen 's brother, their top returner. They are going to need to exceed expectations big time to have success in the Big 12.

16. Colorado

Julian Hammond III, Colorado Men's Basketball

Colorado lost all starters from last season's NCAA Tournament team. Coach Tad Boyle will now be relying heavily on Division II transfer Trevor Baskin (Colorado Mesa) and NAIA transfer Elijah Malone (Grace). Julian Hammond III , their best returning player, will have to take a big step if the Buffaloes want to compete.
