The Process of Recycling

The various materials that we recycle have to go through a process that refines and purifies them. Besides, different materials go through a different process and in this topic we will discuss the recycling process of various materials.

Paper- It is the most used material on the earth. Paper is made up of two materials water and wood. For recycling paper firstly they break it down in small pieces and dissolve it into water. After that, they add chemicals that filter out the ink and dirt from it. Glass- The recycling of glass is the easier they just break it into pieces and then they melt it and recast them.

Plastic- They also follow the same process as plastic. But, the process of plastic recycling is a little bit complex because they have to sort out the different types of plastics. As there is a diverse variety of plastic with different properties.

How Can We Contribute to Recycling?

Almost everything that we use can be recycled whether it is household materials like paper, plastic, metal, glass, furniture, toys, artifacts, vehicles, etc. Besides, opt for things from the market that can easily be recycled. Also, try to use merchandise that is made up of recycled products.

In addition, sort your waste and dump your recyclable waste in the recycle bin so that the authorities can recycle it.

The solution to waste management cannot be implemented by the government or officers sitting miles away from your home. As the saying goes, charity begins at home, the solution to waste management should be started within our homes. Firstly while disposing of waste, segregation of waste into liquid waste, solid waste, organic waste, inorganic waste and plastic waste should be categorized well. Plastic waste should be as much as possible reused and the organic and inorganic waste, instead of throwing away, can be used as compost in our backyard or in our gardens. While waste management can start at our house, there should be enough awareness and educational programs that the government should conduct to make people aware of the impending threat of plastics in our society.

Other than the individual level, on a governmental level, the massive scale of waste produced by human beings in a country is in thousands of tons every day. The government has to set up recycling plants in every district and every village so that the waste produced will be recycled immediately within the vicinity without being dumped on the land or water which causes pollution in the ecosystem. Without proper recycling and reusing and disposable systems in place, man has been dumping harmful and toxic waste on land and water for many years, without realising the fact that this waste will eventually come back to man through food or through the very air we breathe.

Industries and factories dump certain toxic wastes and oils in oceans, harming the aquatic life on the planet. When this aquatic life is consumed by human beings, this will poison the entire food chain on all levels. It is said that harmful chemical such as zinc or lead or tungsten has been already penetrated through our food cycle. It is also estimated that people have started to consume plastics through food, agricultural food, and this can have catastrophic effects on human health.

I would like to conclude by saying that waste management cannot be done effectively if each and every citizen of the country doesn’t take cognizance of the problem. All that the governments and authorities can do is create a system but the onus of separating the waste and reuse and recycling lies on the shoulders of every citizen of the country. The international community has to come together and formulate proper laws and policies to prevent the dumping of harmful waste into our ecosystem and we have to prioritize the research and development to find innovative waste disposal solutions.

How to Reduce Paper Waste

Paper waste is a major contribution to the total waste at landfills, being approximately 26% of it. [1] X Research source Although paper is biodegradable and trees are continuously planted for global paper consumption every day, there are often more efficient ways of utilizing paper when it comes in handy. This article will teach you some ways to reduce paper waste.

Write on both sides of the paper.

It may seem as if simply writing on both sides of a piece of paper is not helpful, but in fact, it can help a lot.

  • If you want to use a pen, you could also consider writing lightly with a pencil first since this will avoid making imprints that would require you to discard the page.

Use paperclips instead of staples.

Staples can be difficult (and sometimes impossible) to remove without tearing the paper.

  • Paperclips are easily available in most stationery shops, and they may even be cheaper than staples since you won't need to purchase a stapler along with them.

Reuse envelopes and folders by sticking a new label on them.

Informal letters or friendly messages can go in envelopes that are repurposed to save paper.

  • You could also simply use some tapes and cover-up names and addresses to make way for a new name and details.
  • If you'd like, you can use an old, blank paper that you are not planning to use to make your envelopes .

Reuse paper .

Instead of throwing paper away, consider reusing it.

  • Use it for packing fragile materials. Used magazines and newspapers are great for packing material. When moving or shipping something, you can use old newspapers to wrap fragile materials.
  • Save packaging, coloured paper, and other paper items for arts and crafts projects. Do some research and figure out some craft projects that you could make with your leftover paper products.
  • Clean with old paper. You can use newspaper to wipe windows, and you can also dampen newspaper and use it to shine stainless steel appliances.
  • Make a fire starter . Paper burns fast, making it a great fire starter, meaning that you can use it in your fireplace or fire pit to get your logs burning.
  • Use old magazines to decoupage . Old magazines can be used for a variety of fun decoupaged crafts.
  • Make origami out of the paper. Since origami is the art of folding paper, it would be a great way to reuse your paper products.

Use old newspaper to wrap gifts.

Using old newspapers is a great, eco-friendly way to wrap gifts.

  • If you don't find any good pictures, simple notebook pages that you decorate can also make gifts look nice.
  • You can also save any wrapping paper you have for packing or reusing it later if it is in good shape.

Recycle old paper .

If there is a recycling centre near you, you might want to give away all of your old papers and notebooks for recycling.

  • If there's one further away, consider storing some papers and giving them to the recycling centre every month.
  • Recycling only one ton of paper will save 13 trees, 26,500 litres of water, 2.5 barrels of oil, and 4,100 kilowatts per hour of electricity! Paper can also reasonably be recycled five to seven times before getting thrown away. [6] X Research source

  • Recycling paper doesn't always mean putting it in the recycling bin. You can turn old paper into origami or scrunch it up into a ball to practice juggling! Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. There are many ways of recycling old paper, and depositing your paper in a recycling bin is merely one way to recycle it.

Think of all the paper articles you use.

List the activities you do, during which you use paper.

  • To avoid using more paper, list your activities on a word processor on a computer or smartphone.

Take notes on your computer or smartphone when possible.

Taking paper notes can use up a lot of paper, which may be harmful to the environment.

  • You can also add images to your notes and categorize them if you'd like to use other programs. Another advantage to taking notes online is that in some cases, you can see them from all your devices–mobile phones, tablets, PCs etc.— since many are available on the web and as their own standalone apps.
  • You can also consider trying to write your grocery list or figuring out mathematical sums (you could also just use a regular calculator for this) on your computer or smartphone.
  • Never write online access codes/credentials, and posting them to these services to avoid risking potential of identity theft, which is a big hazard and a big no-no! Places like Google Drive and Microsoft Word on the Web, are good substitutes.
  • Programs such as Evernote and OneNote, Notepad, Textedit, Notepad++ etc. are some examples of cheap note-taking apps (although this might depend on where you live).
  • You may still have to use paper if you're taking notes for school and they don't allow you to use a phone or computer, or if you find that taking paper notes helps you remember the material better. If so, consider writing in smaller (yet still readable) handwriting so the notes take up less space.

Send e-mails instead of traditional mail.

Traditional, posted mails require a lot of paper.

  • You could also text or call someone as opposed to sending something in the traditional mail if you don't want to email them.
  • Even if something needs to be signed, you may still be able to sign it with an electronic signature and e-mail the signed document. [7] X Research source
  • Consider sending emails to yourself if you really need to send yourself a reminder or something that needs to be written and saved for posterity– that you once might have noted on post-it notes.

Limit how much you print.

Step 1 Print out documents only if you absolutely need to.

  • Printed documents tend to get lost. You could end up losing them in a pile of other supplies, or you may simply forget where you placed them. As a result, you may not be able to find the document when you need it.
  • They may take up a lot of space. Especially if you have a lot of other things, adding a document to the mix will likely result in more space being used.
  • You may forget to bring them along with you. If you need to bring the document somewhere, you may forget it by accident. If the document is saved on a computer, you don't have to worry about bringing it somewhere, since you can simply log on to a computer and find it.

Step 2 Consider electronically saving documents.

  • You can use drive storage programs to save your documents, such as Google Drive or OneDrive, so that they won't get lost and you can access them from any device, anywhere, at any time. With these programs, you'll also likely be able to give and receive feedback on your document easier. [8] X Research source
  • Remember what you name all of your files and if you place them in any folders (and if so, the name of the folder). Otherwise, you may not be able to find them when you need them.

Step 3 Print double-sided...

  • Double-check beforehand to see if your printer allows double-sided printing. If it doesn't, you can still print double-sided manually .
  • Using smaller (but still readable) fonts if possible can also be helpful, since what you're printing may not even end up on a second page.

Use recycled paper.

Using recycled paper means cutting down fewer trees, therefore helping the environment.

  • Check labels to see if a product or its packaging is made from recycled content. Specifically, you'll want to see if you can find what percentage of the paper is recycled (the higher the percentage, the better it is for the environment), and/or an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) seal, since this seal indicates that sustainably-harvested wood fibres were used to make the paper.   • Some pencils may be made from newspaper or recycled paper— consider writing with these.

Read e-papers instead of buying newspapers.

Newspapers need a good amount of paper since the pages are large, and you get one every day (most likely).

  • You might have to pay a monthly fee for this, but some publications do offer free e-papers.
  • If the publication you like to read does not offer an online version, consider referring to other sites for news updates.
  • Similarly, instead of purchasing books, consider reading e-books or checking out library books. Some examples of e-readers you can purchase include Amazon Kindles and Nooks, though you may also be able to read e-books on a tablet or smartphone.
  • Consider purchasing audiobooks, which can complement eBooks you read without any loss of position.

Use cloth bags instead of paper ones.

A lot of water and fuel needs to be used to produce paper bags, and a lot of trees need to be cut down.

  • Plastic bags are also not a good choice for the environment, since they are made using petroleum, a finite resource. As it gets more limited, obtaining petroleum causes a larger amount of harm to the environment. They can also be a challenge to recycle, since they often cling onto machines or fly out of recycling bins, thus ending up in oceans, landfills and streets, where they can put wildlife in danger.   • Cloth bags are a lot more durable than paper bags. Cloth bags can be washed and used multiple times,
  • If you don't have a cloth bag, you can make your own .
  • When shopping, always carry your own bags. Politely deny taking paper or plastic bags if you are offered them by the mall or store.
  • If you need to use a paper bag and it doesn't end up damaged, consider reusing it, as a bag for lunch, for craft projects, or as a trash, recyclables or compost bag. You can also compost your paper bag— simply tear up the bag and put it in your compost pile. [14] X Research source

Buy products with less packaging.

A huge amount of municipal solid waste is from packaging and is often thrown away after a while.

  • Carry reusable items whenever possible. This includes not only a reusable bag but also a reusable straw, utensils, and water bottle, to name just a few things. [16] X Research source
  • Purchase in bulk whenever you can. Not only can this help to reduce waste from packaging, but it can also save you money. [17] X Research source
  • Instead of pre-packaged products, purchase products like vegetables and fruit that are loose. [18] X Research source
  • If you're unsure of which brand of a product to purchase, buy the one that does not use as much packaging. [19] X Research source
  • Reuse packaging when you can. [20] X Research source You can use packaging for things like craft projects or storage.
  • Consider using websites such as Nextdoor, Facebook Marketplace, Freecycle, or Craigslist if you need an item. You may be able to find what you need on there [21] X Research source , and it may use less packaging.

Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones.

A lot of paper is wasted every year on things like paper towels and napkins.

  • If you need to use paper napkins, look for ones that were made using recycled paper. [23] X Research source

Avoid paper dinnerware and cups.

Step 1 While paper cups and dinnerware may seem convenient, they can harm the environment.

  • Reusable dinnerware can also typically be used a lot more than disposable dinnerware.
  • Recently, many people have started using edible dinnerware, too. It is made from seaweed and not genetically modified. If you don't want to buy real dinnerware, this is another option for what you can purchase.

Step 2 Use proper cups and mugs instead of paper ones.

  • Furthermore, many paper cups have a plastic liner which many recycling programs do not accept (though check with yours—it may be accepted).
  • When you go out, remember to always keep a reusable cup with you. Some companies (such as Starbucks) may be able to pour your drink into your reusable cup, so be sure to ask. [25] X Research source

Spread the word about reducing paper waste.

You can do many things to reduce paper waste yourself, but sharing this advice with others can be helpful too.

  • You can talk about the statistics of how much paper is wasted, how much energy is saved when recycling, how many trees are saved by recycling, and any other facts about paper waste you know.
  • Give them ideas on what they can do to help. This can be done by telling them what you do to help, and by giving them other ideas that you've found through research or in this article.
  • Explain everything properly and avoid rushing through the discussion. You'll also want to be prepared to answer any questions they may have.
  • If you notice them wasting paper, be patient with them and explain why the wasting of paper is harmful to the environment, as well as what they can do to reduce paper waste.
  • If you see that a business is constantly wasting paper (either by using too many paper bags or too much paper packaging), consider writing to them and politely asking if they can use recycled paper or go paperless if possible.
  • Consider a donation to organizations that are known for their efforts to reduce paper waste and/or are known to make an effort to use as little paper as possible. You can find some good organizations to potentially donate to on Charity Navigator or the Better Business Bureau .

The best place to start making a difference is right in your own home. Learn how you can reduce, reuse, and recycle materials to decrease household waste. The tips below will help you get started.

Lawn and Garden

  • Learn to compost at home . Use food scraps, yard trimmings, and other organic wastes to create a compost pile. Adding the compost you make to soil increases water retention, decreases erosion, and keeps organic materials out of landfills. 
  • Raise the cutting height of your lawnmower during hot summer months to keep grass roots shaded and cooler, reducing weed growth, browning, and the need for watering.
  • If you need large lawn and garden equipment such as tillers and chainsaws, you can reduce waste (and save money) by setting up a sharing program with your neighbors.
  • When you mow, “grasscycle” by leaving grass clippings on your lawn instead of bagging then. The clippings will return nutrients to the soil instead of taking up space in landfills.
  • Donate healthy plants that you want to replace to community gardens, parks and schools.
  • If you have a wood burning fireplace, save your ashes instead of throwing them away. Once cooled, wood ashes can be mixed into your compost heap and provide nutrients to your garden.

Home Improvement

  • Use insulation made from recycled paper, glass, and other recovered materials.
  • Clean and properly store tools, toys and outdoor furniture to protect them from damage and keep them out of landfills.
  • Turn off or unplug lights during the day. Doing so will save energy and help your lights last longer.
  • Storms can cause power outages. Prevent waste by keeping rechargeable batteries for your flashlights. If you do use disposable batteries, reduce hazardous waste by buying ones with low mercury content.

Moving & Cleaning

  • Have a yard sale to find homes for clothes, toys, appliances, and books that you no longer need.
  • When moving, use old newspapers to wrap fragile materials.
  • Use moving boxes with the highest content of recycled paper and bubble wrap containing recycled plastic. Be sure to recycle packaging materials after your move. Many organizations, such as U-Haul, have places where you can drop of unused boxes for others to reuse.
  • Be sure to properly dispose of any non-recyclable items that you won’t be taking with you. Look for household hazardous waste collection days in your community to properly dispose of cleaners, paints, automotive supplies and other hazardous items.
  • For cleaning chores, buy reusable mops, rags and sponges. When using cleaning products, use only the amount you need and follow the bottle’s directions for use and disposal.

Tips for Students and Schools

Students, parents, and teachers can all make a difference in reducing waste at school. By practicing the "3 R's" of waste reduction—reduce, reuse, and recycle—we can all do our part.

Green School Supplies

  • Think green before you shop . Before starting the new school year, look through last year’s materials. Many items can be reused or recycled.
  • Purchase and use school supplies made from recycled products, such as pencils made from old blue jeans and binders made from old shipping boxes.
  • Keep waste out of landfills by using school supplies wrapped in minimal packaging, and buying in bulk when possible.
  • Save packaging, colored paper, egg cartons and other items for arts and crafts projects. Look for other ways that you can reduce the amount of packing that you throw away.
  • Maintain new school supplies. Keep track of pens and pencils. Make an effort to put your things in a safe place every day. This will not only reduce waste, but save you money in the long run.

In the Cafeteria

If you bring your lunch to school, package it in reusable containers instead of disposable ones. Carry food in reusable plastic or cloth bags, and bring drinks in a thermos instead of disposable bottles or cartons. Read EPA's Pack a Waste Free Lunch guide for more tips.

When buying lunch, grab only what you need. Too often extra ketchup packets and napkins go to waste.

Remember to recycle your cans and bottles after you finish eating.

Work with your teachers to set up a composting program at school.

Make posters that remind students what can be composted or recycled.

In the Office

  • Instead of printing hard copies of your documents, save them to your hard drive or email them to yourself to save paper.
  • Make your printer environmentally friendly. Change your printer settings to make double-sided pages. Use small point fonts when possible and use the “fast draft" setting when possible to save ink.
  • Pay your bills via e-billing programs when possible to save paper.
  • Use paperclips (over staples) when possible.
  • Reuse envelopes with metal clasps and reuse file folders by sticking a new label over the previous one.

Green Purchasing at Work

  • Purchase recycled paper and keep a recycling bin nearby your desk.

Citizens in every community can do many activities to work together and reduce waste. Each of us can make a difference by reducing, reusing, and recycling materials throughout our communities-and encouraging our neighbors to do the same.

  • Donate your old computers and tablets to a school. Many schools will be able to make good use of your old machine.
  • Before replacing a computer that no longer fits your needs, consider enhancing the computer’s capacity by upgrading the hard drive or memory. This can save you money too.

Starting Community Projects

  • On Earth Day, April 22, show your commitment to a clean environment by volunteering for a cleanup effort in your community.
  • Organize a recycling drive in your neighborhood or at school. Collect bottles, glass, plastic, newspapers or books and take them to your local recycling center or a charity in need.
  • Create a community drop-off site for old computers at a neighborhood school.
  • Set up a composting program for your neighborhood or school. It only takes a small amount of land space to collect organic waste into a compost pile. The compost can be bagged and sold for community and school funds.
  • Hold a “donation picnic” at your local park or rec center. Participants can eat, talk and bring their old toys, clothes, books, furniture and other items for charitable organizations.

Travelers create a lot of waste, even with the best intentions. Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, you can do a few simple things that will reduce your waste, conserve resources, and minimize the overall environmental impact of your visit.

Trips and Vacations

  • When visiting beaches and parks, be sure to take back everything you bring in, so that you can leave places undisturbed and without any litter.
  • To pass the time on long drives or rainy vacation days, bring scrap paper for drawing and games.
  • Hot summer days make you thirsty. Be sure to recycle your used drink containers. Consider putting a filter on your water tap and refilling bottles with the filtered water. Instead of buying many small drink bottles, buy drink mixes in bulk and fill your reusable bottles.
  • Share the ride and the road. Public transportation and carpooling reduce pollution.

Car Maintenance

  • If you change your own motor oil, collect and store used oil in a sturdy plastic container and take it to a recycling center .Dumping oil down storm drains or on the ground can contaminate groundwater.
  • Purchase extended life anti-freeze for your car. When it’s time to change it out, take your used anti-freeze to a recycling center. Call 1-800-CLEANUP or visit Earth 911's website to find the recycling center nearest to you.
  • Take used or damaged car batteries to auto stores that stock or repair lead-acid batteries for safe disposal. The batteries contain toxic amounts of lead and acid, and should not be thrown out with your regular trash.
  • Return used car tires to retailers or wholesalers that recycle or retread them. Tires are banned from most landfills, and illegally dumped tires become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other pests.
  • Make sure your car has a clean air filter—a dirty air filter can increase your car’s fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent. Instead of sending your car to a low-value car to a landfill, offer it to a local charity. The gift will be tax-deductible.

Tips for the Holidays

Holidays are the best time to connect with family and friends, but parties and gift giving often creates extra waste. Learn what you can do to keep your holidays as green as possible.

Giving Gifts

  • Think green before you shop the holiday sales. Bring your own reusable cloth bag for carrying your purchases, and try to buy items with minimal packaging and/or made with recycled content.
  • Wrap gifts in recycled or reused wrapping paper. Also remember to save or recycle your used wrapping paper. Give gifts that don't require much packaging, such as concert tickets or gift certificates.
  • Send recycled-content greeting cards and remember to recycle any paper cards you receive. You can also try sending electronic greeting cards to reduce paper waste.
  • Bake cookies or other goodies and package them in reusable and/or recyclable containers as gifts. Homemade goodies show how much you care and help you avoid packaging waste.
  • When gifting flowers, consider buying long-lasting silk flowers, potted plants, or live bushes, shrubs, or trees that can be planted in the spring as gifts.

Green Parties and Events

  • If you host a party, set the table with cloth napkins and reusable dishes, glasses, and silverware. Also save and reuse party hats, decorations, and favors.
  • Be sure your guests know where to properly dispose of and recycle their wastes at your party.
  • After holiday festivities, put leftovers in recyclable containers, and share them with family, friends, or others. Donate untouched leftovers from parties to a local food bank or homeless shelter.
  • After parties, fill your dishwasher up completely before running it. You will run fewer cycles, which saves energy.

Over population is the obvious cause for major issues of our country. Increase in population results in increase in solid municipal waste. High population leads to increasing demand of basic resources which leads to waste generation.

  • Urbanization

Increasing population, declining employment opportunities in rural areas and migration from rural areas to enjoy the benefits of urban economic and social growth result in urbanization are some of the other reasons. Urbanization is the major cause for global warming. Industrialization in urban areas produces large amount of waste in the process of production of goods and disposal of goods after use causing waste. v. Non-recyclable waste materials are also converted into fuel, heat or electricity.
