The Basics of Critical Thinking

While some critical thinking books for younger students focus on particular subsets of skills for critical thinking, The Basics of Critical Thinking takes a more practical and more comprehensive approach. It teaches students in grades four through nine how to find and evaluate evidence to help them arrive at accurate conclusions. In many of the lessons, students will immediately grasp the applications and the importance of sorting through possibilities.

Lessons are presented in 20 sections, but these vary in length. Some sections are brief enough for a student to complete in one or two sittings, but others will need more time. Sections all begin with brief instruction on a concept followed by an example then practice exercises. Some sections will have more than one point of instruction which is then followed with a different style of exercise. The variety keeps things interesting.

Lessons begin with an explanation of “What is Critical Thinking?” They continue with topics such as Decisions and Conclusions, Beliefs and Claims, Evaluating Evidence, Inferring and Inferences, Facts and Probable Truths, Venn Diagrams, Logical Connectives, Advertising, and Agreements and Contracts. After these sections, the last five sections deal with common errors, different types of arguments, and fallacies. The latter sections are introductory as you would expect for a book that can be used for student in the upper elementary grades. While they do not try to cover all types of arguments and fallacies, they build a foundational understanding.

Some of the exercises are similar to critical thinking items that appear on newer standardized tests. These items have a paragraph of information then students must answer questions related to the paragraph, identifying which sentence in the paragraph supports their answer.

The Basics of Critical Thinking is printed in color with frequent illustrations. The book can be reproduced for one class or family per year. A few graphic organizers toward the end of the book might be used multiple times. An answer key is at the back of the book.

While students can do some of their work independently, they should not go too far without a parent or teacher checking their answers to see if they are on track before proceeding to the next section. Sometimes students might interpret information in a way not predicted by the author, yet one that makes logical sense. Consequently, parents or teachers need to be open to alternative answers if they are logically correct. Students are often required to write answers in full sentences. Parents or teachers will need to evaluate these responses, but suggested responses are in the answer key. Most students will need to discuss exercises from time to time when they get stumped, and younger students might need to work through most exercises with someone assisting them.

I suspect that some lessons will be too easy for ninth graders and some too difficult for fourth graders—a predictable problem when one book attempts to cover such a broad span of grade levels. Nevertheless, The Basics of Critical Thinking should be a very effective tool for teaching critical thinking because it teaches so many different strategies with plenty of practical application that students will readily understand.

The Basics of Critical Thinking – Book Review

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been able to use my review copy of The Basics of Critical Thinking by The Critical Thinking Co. (written by Michael Baker). I wanted to ramp up my kids’ decision-making and critical thinking skills, and this book has been an interesting and practical way to do it. If you’re trying to help teach discernment, this can be a helpful tool as well!

The Basics of Critical Thinking retails for $22.99 and is a 146-page worktext-style paperback book for students in grades 4-9. Younger, gifted students could probably also benefit from it. In fact, I feel that high school students and adults could also use it, because it is a quick way to learn about critical thinking and how to methodically work through problem solving and decision-making. You can click here to see a sample of the book.

We learned about how advertisements use information to convince us to purchase things!

Many of the concepts and following exercises actually strongly resembled things I was taught in my college-level philosophy class many years ago. For example, fallacies, facts and probable truths, and analogy arguments. A few of the other topics covered include advertising, finding and evaluating evidence, beliefs and claims, agreements and contracts, and using critical thinking to make better decisions.

In all, there are 20 different topics covered, as well as a pretest and posttest. Answers are also located in the back of the book. What I love about the answers section is that it explains how the answer was found. This makes it a lot easier for me to help my child see where they might have gotten stuck when they got the wrong answer.

I chose to introduce one topic a week to my 5th grade daughter. My 2nd grade son tagged along sometimes, and he did occasionally contribute to the conversation, but most of it was just too far above his comprehension. That’s okay by me! My daughter enjoys having special time with Mom anyway. 🙂

We would read the short lesson page(s) first, which contain great examples to follow along with as well. Each topic presented several practice problems, so we would divide these up into a few different sessions to be completed throughout the week. On some of them, Grace would try to do quite a bit more, but I insisted that it be split up. In my experience, she will breeze through workbooks and retain very little. If I group it into mini lessons, she retains it far better.

This lesson was very practical and modeled real life conversations! I love that it related to a realistic situation. This lesson stuck with my daughter thanks to that.

I enjoyed working through these with my daughter. Like I said, it reminded me of some college coursework that I completed. I had forgotten a lot of it, so it was pretty fun for me to revisit things I was taught in the past and work through the practice problems in my head while my daughter completed her work in the worktext.

She didn’t always get things right the first time. This is when the explanations in the back of the book answer key became handy. It offered me clear and concise explanations to offer my daughter to help her understand, and we would go and rework the problem together.

We loved the fun, colorful illustrations. We also loved the examples that were given for each topic so we could model them in the practice problems.

I was addicted to logic puzzles as a kid, and this sort of reminded me of doing that. I love logical thinking and looking critically at something to decipher or solve it. I think my daughter is beginning to discover that she enjoys the same kind of challenge.

I highly recommend this book. I love that it is consumable and in paperback form. I love the layout of the lessons and practice problems. The pretest and posttest – well, they’re just the icing on the cake.

Basics of Critical Thinking

See series description for full review.

The Basics of Critical Thinking book is designed to teach critical thinking to middle and upper elementary students. Many workbooks claim to teach or develop critical thinking skills, but most of these products never defined critical thinking or try to teach the meaning to students. This book instead defines and teaches critical thinking in a way all students can understand through easy to understand explanations, diagrams, and short engaging activities. In addition to being a course in critical thinking, the activities in this book can be used to supplement lessons in all subjects. Although this book teaches common argument forms, its primary focus is identifying and evaluating evidence - the very basis of critical thinking. Most propaganda, advertising schemes, legal trickery, and bad science are not the result of complex arguments; they are the result of half-truths and simple arguments. Students who successfully complete this book will have a fundamental set of critical thinking skills they can use their entire lives.

Book Description Softcover. Condition: Good. This engaging, colorful 152-page book for grades 4-9 (ages 9-15) teaches the most important critical thinking concepts every student should know. Many workbooks claim to teach or develop critical thinking skills, but most of these products never define critical thinking or try to teach the meaning to students. This book defines and teaches critical thinking in a way all students can understand through simple explanations, diagrams, and short, engaging activities. In addition to being a course in critical thinking, the activities in this book can be used to supplement lessons in all subjects.

Although this book teaches common argument forms, its primary focus is identifying and evaluating evidence-the very basis of critical thinking. Most propaganda, advertising schemes, legal trickery, and bad science are not the result of complex arguments; they are the result of half-truths and simple arguments. Students who successfully complete this book will have a fundamental set of critical thinking skills they can use their entire lives. Seller Inventory # SONG1601445075
