Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact Housing Administrative Services with any questions via (858) 534-4010 or  [email protected].

How are roommates selected? Can I contact my roommate(s)?

The information you provide on the Room Preference website largely determines the roommate and/or apartment-mates you receive.  Students may submit a roommate request via the Room Preference link sent by Housing*Dining*Hospitality by the beginning of July.   If you have submitted a roommate request, please be aware that requests are not guaranteed and are based on contract type and mutual request.

Your roommate and/or apartment-mates are listed on the online room assignment page, along with their contact information. Assignments will be available to view mid to late August. We encourage you to contact your roommate(s) in the short time before you arrive for move-in, in order to get to know them better and to discuss any specifics regarding what you each plan to bring during move-in. Any change in bed space must be approved by  the Warren Residential Life Office. While the convenience of online communities, such as Facebook and Twitter, has made it easier to gather lots of information at the click of a button, we strongly encourage you to take the time to actually speak with your roommate(s) on the phone or in person, if at all possible.

The online assignment page will list your roommate and suitemates in the residential halls, or all residents of an apartment. Look for your residential hall room or apartment number on the list. If another person is listed with the exact same room information as you, then you are in a double. All roommates will be listed. In the apartments, the individual(s) with the same bedroom number is your roommate, and the other individuals are assigned to the other room in your apartment. Black, Brennan, Douglas and Goldberg Halls have a two double rooms. Bates and Brown apartments are occupied with continuing and transfer students and have 2 single rooms and 2 double rooms.

All the buildings in Warren are named after Supreme Court Justices who served with Justice Earl Warren or famous cases heard by his court. The residential halls are: Frankfurter, Harlan, and Stewart. The apartments are: Bates, Black, Brennan, Brown, Douglas, and Goldberg.

What is my mailing address and how do I receive mail?

The online room assignment page lists both your building/room location and your mailbox number (available mid to late August). This mailbox number is what you use as a mailing address, DO NOT include your room/apartment location. Mail must be addressed with your full name and your correct mailbox number in order to be delivered; otherwise, it will be returned to sender.  Mail must be addressed as follows:

Your Name Here #_ _ _ _ _ (list your full mailbox number here) 9450 Gilman Drive La Jolla, CA 92092-0100

Mail boxes are assigned by rooms. If you are sharing a room, you will be sharing a mail box. Campus Mail Services will not begin delivering mail or packages UNTIL date to be announced. Due to the liability issues and storage problems involved, the Residential Life Office will not be accepting any mail or packages prior to move-in. If you are planning to ship some of your personal items instead of bringing them with you, arrange to have them delivered to the campus beginning date to be announced.

Amazon Lockers

How to find the Warren Amazon locker:

  • Go to www.amazon.com/findalocker  and search by locker name- Warren
  • Select Amazon Locker - Warren as your shipping address
  • Retrieve your package using the pickup code you receive after it's delivered to the locker.

Additional Tip on Package Mail: Letters, magazines, and small packages that fit will be delivered directly to your mailbox. Large packages and other items larger than your mailbox that are sent via U.S. Mail (First, Second, or Third Class, Express Mail, Priority Mail, and Certified Mail), United Parcel Service (UPS), Federal Express, OnTrac, DHL Express, are delivered to Student Mail Services. You will receive a notice (via email) with instructions on when and where you can pick up your package.

How to open my Mailbox?

Directions to open your mailbox:

  •  Turn the tumbler 4 times to the left  .  Stop at the first number;
  • Turn the tumbler to the right , passing the first number.  Stop at the second number;
  • Turn the tumbler to the left .  Stop at the third number;
  • Turn the tumbler a few numbers to the right   and pull to open

Instructional video :

Things to note about your mailbox:

  • Mailboxes are assigned by room, so if you share a room, you share your mailbox with your roommates.  If you live in Bates or Brown Hall, one mailbox is shared with all 4 apartment mates.
  • Mailboxes are for personal mail, and are not to be used for any business you may own.
  • Broken locks:  Please complete a Fix-It Request at hdhfixit.ucsd.edu to report broken locks.
  • Combination not working?  First follow the directions to open your mail box. Please note that the mail box combinations start by turning the tumbler in a counter clockwise direction (many combo locks start in a clockwise direction).  Also, at the last number you must turn the tumbler to the right (clockwise) for a few numbers while pulling the tumbler toward you.  If cannot open your mailbox with the combination, please ask someone to help you.  If several people are unable to open your mailbox, please submit a Fix-It Request at hdhfixit.ucsd.edu to request a re-read of your mailbox combination.

What are the available on-campus amenities?

Cable Service:  UC San Diego has partnered with Spectrum Cable TV to provide cable TV service for on-campus students. Basic Cable TV service will be available in each room without additional fees. ResNet will be providing support for students using the Basic Cable TV service. In order to use this service, you will need a TV with a Qam digital tuner or a digital-TV converter box if your TV does not support digital signals, and you will also need a coax cable. Visit  resnet.ucsd.edu for the channel lineup and more information.

Laundry:  There are laundry rooms (washers and dryers) located in all the residential halls (floors 2-4, depending on the building) and in the apartments (in the bottom o f each building). The Laundry Machines in the Res Halls and Apartments are NOT coin operated; however you can pay with your Laundry Account on your campus ID card. The Laundry Account is a pre-paid spending account for all undergraduate residents; you add whatever amount you like through the online card office and the balance is linked to your campus ID card. Deposits can be made mid-September at https://hdh.ucsd.edu/TCAS/pages/index.html .

Telephone Service:  Most students use cellphones. However if a land line is necessary, there is one telephone hook-up in each bedroom in the residential halls and apartments, with an additional hook-up in the kitchen of each apartment. Students interested in ordering land line phone service will need to contact the Warren Residential Life Office for more information.

What are the dimensions of the bedroom furnishings?

**All measurements are approximate, and furnishings in the res halls may vary from those in apartments**

Single/Double Bedrooms

  • Bed Measurements

o    Frame: 40” x 84”

o    Headboard: 36”h

o    Mattress: 36” x 78”

o    Three Drawer Dressers (Res Halls Only): 30.5”w x 30”h x 19”d

o    Under-Bed Drawers (Apt Only): 4 Drawers, each 24”h x 28.5”w x 20”d

o    Measures: 42”w x 30”h x 24”d

o    Optional Extension Leaf: 12”

o    Keyboard Tray: 22.5”w x 24”d

o    Desk Chair

o    Top Shelf: 15” x 54”

o    Measures: 54”w x 25”d x 67”h to rod

All furniture must be put back in its original position when moving out and it cannot be taken out of the room .

Hanging and/or attaching items to the walls: If you plan on bringing posters or pictures to hang in your room or apartment, purchase non-staining and non-marring adhesive mounting putty such as Tac-Stick or removable fasteners such as 3M Command Adhesive (most major home and hardware stores carry these items) - nails and hooks are  NOT allowed due to the damage caused in walls or ceilings. You are not allowed to drill or nail anything into the walls to install bookcases, shelves, mirrors, etc.

Hanging items to the sprinkler system overhead: DO NOT DO THIS. You will set off the sprinkler in the room and possibly the entire floor/building. These are not there for decoration but in case of a fire. Residents may be held financially responsible for damage caused from hanging items on the sprinkler system. This may include flood damage, damage to roommate(s)’ personal property, and emergency vehicle response costs.

What do the bedrooms look like?

Please visit the Virtual Tours module in our Warren Neighborhood page to view the common spaces in the apartments and residential halls.

Here are some sample photos of what the different bedrooms look like in the Warren apartments and residential halls. Please note that rooms are only furnished with the items described in the section above and do not include linens.

Appliance responsibilities

a. Appliances:  Air conditioners and appliances with open electrical coils and electric grills are prohibited. All small electrical appliances must be UL approved and subject to the electrical capacity of the room.

 b. Cooking:  The Warren Residential Halls do not have kitchens or kitchenettes. Only microwave ovens with a capacity of 1.5 cubic feet or less and a maximum of 700 watts are allowed.

c. Refrigerators:  Only refrigerators with a capacity smaller than five (5) cubic feet with a safe UL-approved electrical system are allowed in residential halls. Apartments already have a refrigerator.

Information on Warren Occupancy

  • All assignments are based on the student's original application date. By that application date, students are assigned first to residential halls or apartments, then those in residential halls are assigned to singles and then doubles in the Warren Residential Halls. Keep in mind that housing preferences are not guaranteed --it is a preference, not a selection.
  • Your online room assignment will give specific information on the type of room (single or double) and housing location (residential halls or apartments) you were assigned. Please refer to your My Room Assignment  page for your assigned housing location and options for move-in.
  • There is a very limited number of single bedrooms in the residential halls.  Placement in these rooms is based on the receipt date of your original housing application and/or any extenuating circumstances.
  • All room assignments are fixed until after the fall quarter begins.
  • Room change requests will not be accepted until the beginning of week 3.
  • Room change interest form will open on your Housing Portal beginning of Fall week 3 (Monday).  At this time a wait list will be generated. Requests are not guaranteed and are subject to availability.

Tips for Living in a Double Bedroom

TIP #1: OPEN COMMUNICATION - Your roommates will be listed on the on-line room assignment page, along with their contact information. We encourage you to contact them before you arrive in order to get to know them better and to discuss any specifics regarding what you are each planning to bring during move-in. It is important that you not only reach out and establish an open communication style with your roommates, but that you all agree to maintain it throughout the school year.

TIP #2: DISCUSS LIVING SPECIFICS - We especially ask that you take the time before moving in to have a discussion about the particular aspect of the assigned bed placement, and discuss any physical needs for certain bed configurations, as opposed to simply making demands of what you want. Fully discuss with your roommates any desired changes to the assigned bedspaces due to personal preferences/physical needs you have about bed type (loft or bunk, top or bottom bunk, etc.) before move-in.  Note – no room changes will be made until the beginning of week three.

TIP #3: PLAN TOGETHER – One of the keys to successful living in on-campus housing is managing the space wisely. While there is ample room and resources for each person to have their own personal items such as clothing, books, and computer, there is not enough room for three refrigerators, TVs, and coffeemakers. Please discuss with each other what items can be shared by all the residents, and plan together which of you will volunteer to bring that for move-in. Many students have actually waited until they arrive to campus before looking at the room and going out as a group to purchase larger shared items such as refrigerator and microwave. The limitations of the room may also impact whether or not you choose to only have one printer for all of you to share, not only to save space but to also decrease the energy load in the room.

Room Assignment

Residence hall (suite) and apartment assignments will be at double occupancy and some limited triple occupancy rooms. There are also a limited number of single occupancy bedrooms throughout our undergraduate communities.

Incoming first-year and transfer room assignments will be determined by a variety of factors including: room type preferences, roommate requests, Personal History Form (PHF) answers, available space in all housing areas, and other factors.

  • Incoming first-year student housing assignments begin in the residence halls and apartments in their college of registration, then continue into other on-campus housing areas.
  • Incoming transfer housing assignments begin in Pepper Canyon East apartments and the Rita Atkinson Residences, and continue into other on-campus housing areas as needed.

Fluctuations in undergraduate housing, high enrollments, or recommendations by public health officials may affect housing placements.   Students will find out their room assignment in late August via the Housing Portal.

Apartments and Rooms

International House apartments on UC San Diego campus

Learn about apartments and room setups for undergraduate and visiting exchange students in UC San Diego's International House, how the rooms are furnished, and what's included in the rental cost.

Apartment Models & Bedrooms

There are two models of apartments in I-House:

  • 4-person flat with 4 single bedrooms
  • Two-story townhouse for 5 people (all single bedrooms) or 6 people (4 singles + 1 double room)

Please note: The majority of rooms in I-House are single bedrooms; there are only a limited number of double bedrooms. Placement in these double rooms will be based on the receipt date of your original I-House application, and any extenuating circumstances.

You will be able to access your room assignment, including room / apartment number, and apartment mates' names and contact info, after housing contracts are accepted and finalized. The notification will be sent to your @ucsd.edu email address. To login to the room assignment site, you will need your PID and password.

For any questions regarding housing (i.e., early move in, housing assignments, etc.) please contact the ERC Residence Life Office:

Costs & Dining Plan

Apartment prices vary from year to year, and depending on the room type. To see the latest prices, look for the apartment costs on the HDH (Housing, Dining and Hospitality) website .

In addition to your housing costs, UCSD on-campus residents are required to purchase the dining plan. For more information, visit HDH's dining FAQ page .

Furnishings & Other Essentials

All apartments in I-House are furnished with a couch, coffee table, refrigerator, and stove.

Rooms are furnished with one Twin XL mattress and bed, closet, desk, chair, and dresser.

Communal laundry facilities are located between Kathmandu and Geneva.

Please note that I-House does not provide any pillows, bedding, linens, towels, or kitchen plates or utensils. ISPO usually organizes a shopping trip a couple of days after students arrive. If you plan to shop on your own, the nearest stores that sell these items are Marshalls and Ross located in the La Jolla Village Square shopping center.

We recommend bringing a set of linens and towels with you to use the first few days until you are able to purchase more. The mattress size is Twin XL, which can be purchased in the college section of most retailers (Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc.).

How are residents assigned to a room?

The majority of first year Muir registered students will live at Muir and have been assigned to single, double, or triple rooms in the residence halls. Second-year students and above will live in the apartment spaces in Muir.

If you are part of a themed/LLC housing opportunity, you will be placed in the same house as others in the community.

How do I get a specific housing accommodation?

Should you need a particular housing accommodation, please contact the Office of Students with Disabilities (osd.ucsd.edu) to discuss your required housing needs. You will need to provide documentation to receive any particular accommodation.

Can I switch rooms?

If you are interested in moving to a different space, you can add yourself to the Room Change Interest List on your Housing Portal. Once a space becomes available, we will reach out to you in regards to the possible offer. The list works on a waitlist type basis so there is no ETA on a possible offer from when you opt in. If the situation is more urgent, please contact us or your House Advisor.

Move-in & move-out:, welcome to marshall college, uc san diego we are so glad you'll be staying with us.

Fall 2023 Move-In

Move-in weekend is September 23rd & 24th, with the first day of classes on September 28th! Please arrive for move-in at your chosen time slot! For more information regarding your housing contract, please visit the Housing, Dining and Hospitality's Undergraduate Housing website .

Spring 2024 Move-Out

  • While housing contracts officially end on  June 15, 2024 at 6:00PM , we encourage students to plan their move-out after their last final exam. The earlier they can vacate, the better, especially with commencement events looming. Early departure helps mitigate traffic and parking congestion on campus during this busy time. Stay updated on move-out procedures by checking back frequently for updated information.

*As we get information from the HDH Undergrad Housing department, we will update the corresponding information for the following year's housing contracts. For the most up-to-date information about living on campus, Move-in, and contract dates, visit the HDH website.

Myroomassignment information, what is myroomassignment  , this is launched through the   housing portal   to access your assignment information; view roommates and suite/apartment-mates; and select your move-in and date time to arrive on campus., each housing area/college will have a designated "start date" as the release of assignments go out on a rolling basis.  see the information below to help gauge on what date you can start to login to view your assignment and select your move-in date and time.   the dates below reflect being assigned to a space and the appropriate housing area/college.  it is possible for some students to be housed outside of their college of registration or housing area.   please do not attempt to login before your designated "start date" below.  you will receive a 'no access' page at login.  , an email to all active housing contract holders will go out no later than 4pm on monday, august 21st to your ucsd email account with your housing area/college designation and access start date as a reminder. we are excited to see you in the fall.

If you have not been assigned your housing assignment, please make sure to check your spam folder if nothing is there, email [email protected]  and [email protected].

* all students  must select a move-in date and time  by 11:59pm on thursday, september 7, 2023. if you do not select a   move-in date and time, one will be assigned to you., move-in date & time selection.

To help make the move-in process as smooth as possible, we have provided the following tips:

  • MyRoomAssignment   launches based on the schedule above.  Once you are able to login, you can review your assignment information and select your move-in date and time.  All students   must select a move-in date and time   by 11:59PM on Thursday, September 7, 2023.  If you do not select a move-in date and time, one will be assigned to you.
  • If you are a current summer housing resident who opted in for extended housing --- you will move to your permanent space on September 14. Room charges apply as indicated for those that opt-in to this program.
  • We have a few additional programs that may have September 15 move-in date and time options available and you are more than welcome to select it.
  • Early Move-In   --- If you would like to arrive early, you can select from available times on September 20, 21, and 22.  The cost is $50/day and will be billed to your student account by October.*
  • General Move-In   --- Takes place beginning September 23 with dates and times through September 29.
  • Late Move-In   --- Students that have a need to arrive later (after September 29), please connect with your housing community's Residence Life Office.
  • Plan accordingly.   There are a number of available move-in date and times to select from.  Please be willing to have options as we cannot have everyone move-in at the same time.   There are no after hours move-in available.
  • Move-In date and times   will vary by housing/area and college and do not affect another area.  For example, a student living at Revelle cannot select date/times available to those at Muir College.  Most housing areas will roughly offer times starting at 8:30am/9:00am through 4:00pm.  Some areas may go a little longer on particular days.  You will be able to choose from what is available and can adjust it as needed before September 7, 2023 at 11:59PM.

  • Reminder - There are limited elevators in the Residence Halls and no elevators in the apartment buildings.
  • Your mailing address and mailbox number will be listed on your Qwik Pass .
  • Note that your room assignment (building name and suite or apartment number) is NOT your mailing address.
  • Download a QR code reader on your mobile device to quickly access information exchanged throughout the move-in process.
  • Download a map app (e.g., Google Maps) on your mobile device to help navigate around campus.
  • Remember your Qwik Pass! Print a copy or take a screenshot of your pass to show campus staff on your move-in day, along with a valid photo ID.

On Your Self-Scheduled Move-In Day

  • Arrive on campus well before your self-schedule time slot. Allow yourself ample time to navigate campus and account for traffic or other delays.

TMC Check-in Step One: KEYS

Check-in will be located inside Angela's Space, located on the 4th floor of OceanView Terrace .

  • Photo ID or Keycard
  • A parking pass/map is to be used for unloading ONLY
  • MOVE-IN PARTIES : Please drop off your student at the designated area for check-in and return to Pangea parking lot while you wait for your student to pick up their keys and a parking pass. Without the parking pass, you will not be allowed access to the lot to unload.

TMC Check-in Step Two: UNLOADING

  • Once you have checked in, head over with your move-in party and your parking pass to the designated lot to unload.
  • Please be mindful that there will be more students than carts; we highly encourage you to come prepared with a dolly or small cart of your own if possible, as this will ease the lines.
  • There is no parking grace period prior to the beginning of the quarter. Permits must be obtained when parking on the weekdays. Day permits can be purchased at the Pangea Parking Structure or the Hopkins Parking Structure.
  • Please note that areas of the campus will be very congested with move-in traffic, especially during the weekends, so expect some delays and/or limited accessibility to parking adjacent to the living areas. Per residence life policy, after move-in, only residents of a building and building staff will be permitted to enter that building.
