Hi Jamie, What to do? Should I rewrite to cut down what I have already written? I have been working off the Step-by-Step for Writing Dissertations manual that I downloaded about a year ago. Your wonderful, cut to the chase, is not what this manual instructs. For example, for the theoretical framework it states 2-3 pages or for the introduction it states 2-3 pages plus than another 3-4 pages for the background. You do not even mention a background. Please advise. Thanx! Cheers, Sarah-Kate Hawkins ([email protected])

Jaimie, Your comments solved my problem and I can't thank you enough. Regarding chapter 2 in a quantitative study do you have any other outlines or am I on my own. Barbara

Hi, Barbara! Jamie talks about chapter 2 here: http://waldenwritingcenter.blogspot.com/2012/02/when-is-literature-review-literature.html. I hope it helps!

This is what I've been searching for. Thank you all!!

You are so welcome! We are so glad you found this blog post to be helpful.

Thanks Jamie, I felt more confident writing and revising chapter 1 of my dissertation. Thanks again!!

Hurray, Jamie! We are thrilled to discover that this blog post helped fuel your confidence! We wish you the best on your continued writing.

Thanks Jamie, I'm getting prepared to begin my dissertation work I found your note very helpful. Keep posting! Andy

It looks like this blog post came at a great time for you. We are thrilled to see that it was helpful to you. Thank you for your encouragement to keep posts like this one coming!

Hi Jame, thanks for this. I will be submitting chapter 1 shortly. This gave me some guidelines in terms of length and depth. I will write again to let you know how it goes.

We are thrilled that this post was helpful to you! Please do let us know how your writing is coming a long. Here is our email: [email protected]

Jamie - I cannot express in words how helpful this was. If you knew how many pages I am currently at with the first draft of my proposal, you would tell me to stop and EDIT! Thank you :-)

Hurray! We are so glad to hear how helpful this blog post was to you! Thank you so much for letting us know.

Jamie, Thank you so much for your "Chapter 1 Made Easy" piece. So incredibly helpful! So...how about a "Chapter's 2 & 3 Made Easy"??? Best, Josh

Josh, You can find Jamie's chapter 2 (literature review) blog post here: http://waldenwritingcenter.blogspot.com/2012/02/when-is-literature-review-literature.html. We'll see about adding more "made easy" posts, okay? Also join us for webinars on each of the chapters. Our webinar schedule is http://writingcenter.waldenu.edu/415.htm

Don't worry everyone! It's a common student instinct to overwrite this chapter because you're excited about the topic or want to show off the interesting literature you've been reading. That's why it's great to make an appointment with a tutor or to step back on your own and ask yourself how much background you actually need.

Hey - to anyone reading this blog, someone needs to address how we are to insert a figure into the body of our document (it sure is easier to have them all at the end on individual pages). I have no problem getting a figure onto the page, but then ... ! OMG! How do you want us to format it so that it's not moving text all over the place or text moving it everywhere? How do you want the layout? Horizontal and Vertical alignment? Lock anchor? Move object with text? Allow overlap? Layout in table cell? This stuff needs serious addressing. Thanks! :)

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll put this topic on the rotation for a future Tech Tips blog post.

Thank you Jamie for a great synopsis and suggestions regarding the 'flow of chapters'. It can be a bit overwhelming for those of us just beginning the arduous dissertation journey. I appreciate your willingness to share with us insights that ease the process and lighten the load.

You're welcome, Chaise!

This entire dialogue was very helpful. I am building on my introduction page for my final project, and Jamie explained a cut to the chase breakdown on each area of the research. Thanks for all the helpful tips. I really see an amazing amount of information here to assist with all the things that I need to better perform in. For example, cohesion and flow, critical thinking, and writing in general. I'll be visiting the webinar site more often. VBBey

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. We are glad that you will be visiting more often.

hi i am just like a new born baby in research.my teacher gave me a topic for presentation and that is how to write first chepter of research?i just want to ask that is yous above given details are related to my topic?

We are so glad to receive that this blog post was helpful to you. To answer your question, the topics do differ. Feel free to connect with us via email and ask any further questions that you may have: [email protected] Thank you!

Thanks so much. I have read so much guidance I was feeling befuddled and am revisiting the Introduction Chapter as I write up. Your clarity is such a relief. Many thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing that you were feeling befuddled and that this blog post provided you with relief. Hurray!

Hello Jamie, Is the outline update with the new dissertation template, Updated September 2016? What is the background length? Thanks for this blog it's exactly what I was looking. With the posted questions being from 2012, I want to make sure everything discussed still applies. Thank you Jackie Wilson [email protected]

Greetings Jackie! Thanks for checking in about the updates to the new dissertation template. You definitely pointed out an important point: This advice was published in 2011 and there have been a great deal of updates to the Walden U Dissertation process since then. Use these suggestions as general advice only, but make sure you are paying close attention to the current requirements. Did you know that you can email [email protected] with any and all capstone-related questions. This email account is monitored by a REAL person (not a robot), and that real person is a professional Writing Center Dissertation Editor. They work with Capstone writers like you all the time and can answer your questions in detail. Please reach out to our Capstone Editor team [ [email protected] ] and GOOD LUCK!

I am from another university writing my dissertation chapter 1 and this helped a lot. Thank you. I have heard that writing chapter 3 first is the easiest way to go about this.

Oh, fantastic, Shauna!! Congratulations on reaching your dissertation writing process, and good luck. The task can be daunting, but it is so rewarding! The WUWC Blog is here for you!!! :) How did you find us?

Hello. Respectfully, some of the information here appears to be incorrect or either some information is missing. How can the student have limitations in the proposal? After a person conducts the study, the individual then discovers the limitations of the study. The research the student conducts as described in Chapter 3 and discussed in chapter 4 enables the writer to recognize the limitations. Are you referring to delimitations? If you anticipate limitations at the onset of the study, then this recognition would allow you to update the study to prevent this piece from occurring? Please clarify.

Great questions. Since editors work on capstone documents, I suggest contacting them with your questions ([email protected]). That said, capstone work is very discipline and committee dependent, so it is best to discuss any proposal, dissertation, or project study developments and documents with your professor / committee.

Please clarify why the writer would have limitations to a study during the proposal stage when that individual has not even conducted the study? If a researcher knows the limitations at the onset, wouldn't that person design the study to avoid those limitations. Do you mean delimitations? Additionally, if the writer has not conducted the study yet, could the writer label the study as significant? Do you mean Rationale for the Study or Importance of the Study? Please clarify.

Hi, Inquiring Mind Wants to Know! Great questions. I suggest contacting our editors, who work on capstone documents, with your questions at [email protected]. As well, since capstone work is verb discipline and committee dependent, you might as your professor / committee for guidance on developing a study proposal.

Where can I locate Jamie's Blog on Chapter 2. The Blog on chapter 1 was great! Cliff Doss

Hi Cliff! Although this isn't titled as a "made easy" post, here is what Jamie had to say about the literature review section: http://waldenwritingcenter.blogspot.com/2012/02/when-is-literature-review-literature.html

chapter 1 dissertation walden university

You mentioned that EdD project studies are different. Is it the headings/rubric alone that are different or the approach, paragaraph/page length, and other facets as well?

Is there a concise blog over chapter 3 as well (for an EdD project study)? Thanks in advance!

Hi Doty! Thanks for your questions. Since the answers to these questions require discipline and program specific information, we encourage you to reach out to your Chair/committee as much as possible. The Walden University Writing Center Dissertation Editors also have an email account you can reach out to with specific questions about writing your capstone project: Editor [at] WaldenU [dot] edu is a great way to get in touch with those who are trained to support your capstone work.

The Walden Dissertation Process

Profile image of Carter Matherly, PhD

2019, Walden University Doctoral Student Cohort

Walden University has a 6 part dissertation process (prospectus, proposal, IRB, defense, research, final defense). Like all doctoral journeys there are important things to do and to avoid. This presentation is an overview and detailed discussion of the Walden University dissertation process. The presentation has universal applicability as the Walden model mirrors many other universities processes. It is a companion lecture to the book 'My Doctoral Journey' (available at Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/Doctoral-Journey-Carter-Matherly-Ph-D/dp/1982931086/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1544112085&sr=8-1).

The purpose of this study is to examine the flow of doctoral students who are also research assistants and in the dissertation process. The study was designed using the case study method. The case undertaken in the study was the dissertation process. Eleven participants were selected into the study using maximum variation sampling. Face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the transcripts. The descriptive analysis of the data identified four main themes: (i) personal characteristics, including tackling challenges, sense of responsibility and planned work habits; (ii) interest in the field, including decision making about postgraduate education, satisfaction from postgraduate education, the fit between the doctoral field and the student’s interests and skills, and academic goals; (iii) emotional attachment, including enjoyed stages of the dissertation process, feelings aroused by the dissertation, and concentration on the dissertation process; and (iv) living the flow.

Our last dissertation presentation before our closing speakers is also a biographical “participant story” of sorts, though it is a story about the author’s father and his expedition across the plains of Australia. It is also our only electronic dissertation representative. In fact, it was the world’s first electronic, Web-based dissertation as far as we know. Yes, Dr. Simon Pockley was responsible for the world’s first online doctoral thesis, “The Flight of Ducks,” which you can access on the World Wide Web. I’ll write it down for you now: www.duckdigital.net/FOD/. Simon receives invitations to speak at National and International forums where he speaks, and also writes about, values in the ecology of information management. He lives in Australia and is in demand as a PhD supervisor, examiner, and student mentor. He works from time to time as a consultant.

The day closes with commentary from some pioneers whose experience summarizes the importance of this work. The New Birmingham Review, Dissertation Special Edition (2015)

Ioana Cerasella Chis , The New Birmingham Review , Eliza Garwood

Dissertations constitute a major part of early academic work. Whether as an undergraduate or masters’ student, the completion of the dissertation stands as testament to one's development throughout university education. For many, the dissertation is the first real instance of having to grapple with completing an extended piece of research-based work, with all that this entails. Students, when confronted with the project of writing their dissertation, face the challenge of selecting a problematic to address; of developing research questions and methods for answering these; of doing research (in terms of both existing literature as well as using research methods to address novel questions); and of writing this all up and presenting it with the clarity and precision demanded by assessment criteria. It goes without saying that the dissertation is, for many, a great undertaking which entails serious engagement and immense effort. It is for these reasons and more that the dissertation’s fate is lamentable. As a piece of work it is produced as part of a broader assessment of one’s academic ability, and as such the dissertation has a very particular institutional life with all the limitations this implies. Many individuals keep their dissertations and cherish them for a long time after their completion, granted – however, engagement with student dissertations beyond this point is usually limited to the supervisor and secondary marker. When the assessment is done, the dissertation loses any movement, becomes a static artefact archived somewhere and rarely read by anybody else.

The Teachers College Record

Mfon Nwabuoku

Of the many graduate students that start their doctoral journey, only half of them successfully complete their degree. For a majority of those who do not, not completing the dissertation process accounts for why they never graduated. This article explores the factors that contribute to successfully completing a dissertation using one graduate student's doctoral experience.

Capstone Form and Style

Walden capstone writing collaborative: getting started on the proposal writing process, getting started on the proposal writing process.

Getting started on writing the proposal means first becoming aware of the expectations for the specific document. Begin by reviewing our Introduction to Writing the Capstone document for the appropriate program:

  • Introduction to Writing the PhD Dissertation
  • Introduction to Writing the DBA Doctoral Study
  • Introduction to Writing the DNP Project Study
  • Introduction to Writing the EdD Doctoral Study

These documents contain links to our Templates page, but students should also check out the Document Expectations page for more specific information on the formatting requirements of the actual document.

Next, we suggest students review the Preproposal and Proposal Starter Kits . The Kits are designed to help students get started on writing different parts of the capstone. Even though students are at the proposal stage, reviewing the Preproposal Kit first is often a helpful refresher. Then, students should review the Proposal Starter Kit for information on the proposal.

In addition, we suggest students log into the Library website and search Walden dissertations and doc studies for an exemplar that is focused on a similar topic and/or method design. This is a helpful introduction to what the document should look like, the information it should contain, and the overall type of achievement that is expected.

We also suggest students keep the following pages in mind as they begin to write:

  • Other APA writing guidelines (anthropomorphism, passive voice)
  • SMRT Guides : How-To help
  • Previous Page: Capstone Writing Clinic February 2019
  • Next Page: Introduction to Writing the PhD Dissertation

You can search in one of the dissertation databases using terms related to your degree program, such as education, public policy, public health, or counselor education, and a database limiter for program, Department - DEP.

  • On the Library homepage click on Publications.
  • Click on the Dissertations & Theses button.

You may be prompted to log in with your myWalden Portal user name and password.

Note: You should now be on the Advanced Search page with more than one search box.  If you only have one search box on your screen, click on the Advanced Search link.

Set up your search:

First search box: education [or the degree program you need]

To the right of that, click on the Anywhere except full text — NOFT drop-down menu and change it to:

Department - DEP

Second search box: Ph.D.

Degree - DEG

chapter 1 dissertation walden university

Click on the search icon.

You will need to look through the results to make sure the dissertation is for the degree program you need. The search can help make your results more manageable, but it is not perfect.

For example, if you search for Education, you may also see Counselor Education or Health Education dissertations.

If you are not sure of the name of your program, try searching for different variations of the name. For example, you could try counseling or counselor in a search if you were not sure of your program name. That would bring up dissertations for Counselor Education and Supervision.
