(2a) Dentition pertains to the development of teeth and their arrangement in the mouth. … The dentition of animals with two successions of teeth (deciduous, permanent) is referred to as diphyodont, while the dentition of animals with only one set of teeth throughout life is monophyodont.

(2b) A tooth consists of enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp tissue. The portion of a tooth exposed to the oral cavity is known as the dental crown, and the portion below the dental crown is known as the tooth root. The dental pulp cavity exists in the center of the tooth, through which the dental pulp, called the nerve, runs. In order to receive an impact on the tooth and to absorb and alleviate the force on the jaw, the surface of the tooth root area (cementum) and the alveolar bone are connected by a fibrous tissue called the periodontal ligament. The tooth is supported by the tissue consisting of the alveolar bone, gums and the periodontal ligament.

(i) Enamel: The hardest bodily tissue covering the surface of the dental crown. It is as hard as crystal (7 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness). (ii) Dentin: The tissue that forms the tooth from the dental crown to the tooth root, situated inside the enamel and cementum. It is softer than the enamel. A small tube filled with tissue fluid, called the dentinal tubule, runs inside the dentin. (iii) Cementum: The tissue covering the surface of the tooth root. It connects the alveolar bone with the tooth by the periodontal ligament. Its hardness is similar to bone. (iv) Dental pulp: The tissue is called the nerve. Blood vessels and the lymph vessels, as well as nerve fibers, are located in the dental pulp, supplying nutrients to the dentin.

What is WAEC ?

The  West African Examinations Council  ( WAEC ) is an examination board established by law to determine the examinations required in the public interest in the English-speaking West African countries, to conduct the examinations and to award certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining authorities internationally.

It is similar to the Cameroon GCE Board or the Uganda National Examination Board ( UNEB ).

The WAEC was established in 1952 and has contributed to education in Anglophonic countries of West Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Gambia), with the number of examinations they have coordinated, and certificates they have issued.

They also formed an endowment fund, to contribute to education in West Africa, through lectures, and aid to those who cannot afford education .

The council conducts four different categories of examinations which are;

  • International Examinations,
  • National Examinations,
  • Examinations conducted in collaboration with other examining bodies,
  • and Examinations conducted on behalf of other examining bodies.

The International exams are exams taken in the five countries with the WAEC ordinance. It consists of   WASSCE  (West African Senior School Certificate Examination):

  • WASSCE FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES (FIRST SERIES) JANUARY–FEBRUARY
  • WASSCE FOR (SCHOOL CANDIDATES) MARCH – MAY
  • WASSCE FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES (MAIN GCE ) SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER

The National examinations are taken in individual countries. They include:

  • the Junior Secondary School Certificate for Nigeria and the Gambia,
  • Junior and Senior High School Certificate Examinations for Liberia,
  • National Primary School and Basic Education Certificate Examinations for Sierra Leone,
  • Basic Education Certificate Examinations for Ghana, and
  • Senior School Certificate Examinations for Ghana.

The council also coordinates examinations in collaboration with some trustworthy examination bodies. These include:

  • City and Guilds of London Institute
  • Royal Society of Arts
  • WAEC Research Institute

The council also conducts examination in West Africa on behalf of international examination bodies. These include:

  • University of London  GCE
  • Scholastic Aptitude Test and Graduate Record Examinations for Educational Testing Service, Princeton, USA, and
  • JAMB  (Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board) examination in countries outside Nigeria.

Animal-to-human translation of therapies

Based on the analysis of 376 therapies in 54 human diseases, Benjamin Ineichen, Malcolm Macleod and co-authors show that, contrary to widespread assertions, the proportion of successful animal-to-human translation may be higher than anticipated; however, the low rate of final regulatory approval indicates potential design flaws in both animal studies and early clinical trials.

Jigsaw puzzles in the epidermis

During the development of the larval Drosophila epidermis, histoblasts and epithelial cells compete for space as they grow and undergo morphological changes. Annafrancesca Rigato, Loïc LeGoff and colleagues show that compressive forces play a key role in controlling the shape of histoblasts, leading to the buckling of their apical junctions and changing their morphology from straight to highly folded outlines.

Dopamine and theory of mind

Difficulties in reasoning about others’ mental states ("Theory of Mind") are highly prevalent among disorders featuring dopamine dysfunctions, but are these difficulties a direct consequence of aberrant dopamine signaling? Bianca Schuster, Jennifer Cook and co-authors provide insights into the role of dopamine in Theory of Mind, showing that the D2-receptor antagonist haloperidiol reduces the accuracy with which healthy adults attribute mental states.

An allele-specific Cas12a nuclease

CRISPR-Cas12a systems have numerous genome editing applications in both animals and plants. Jingjing Wei, Junnan Tang, Yongming Wang and colleagues screen 14 novel Cas12a nucleases for genome editing activity and engineer a high-fidelity Mb4Cas12a variant that is capable of discriminating single-nucleotide polymorphisms.

Oxygen-sensing in Toxoplasma

During host dissemination, Toxoplasma parasites sense and adapt to environmental factors, such as oxygen levels. Charlotte Cordonnier, Ira Blader and colleagues show that the oxygen sensing protein TgPhyA also mediates resistance to IFNγ-induced nutritional immunity by facilitating scavenging of tryptophan in T. gondii .

Shared impairments in autism models

Autism has diverse genetic origins which converge on a similar set of behaviors. Laura Burnett, Maximilian Joesch and co-workers show that three genetic models of autism have similar impairments in visual threat responses, and that these are driven by potassium channel misregulation in Setd5 haploinsufficient mice.

Perspective

Conservationists should stand up for social justice

Conservationists are still grappling with what social justice means in practice. EJ Milner-Gulland argues that a major shift in mindset is required in order to achieve socially just, rights-based conservation, and that shift needs to happen now.

Better data to save the planet

Frank Hawkins argues that we need better spatially explicit and actionable data on the causes of biodiversity loss that can be conveyed to company decision-makers in a format that they can use easily and efficiently.
