WAEC English Marking Scheme (How SSCE Essays Are Marked)

Last updated on January 23rd, 2022 at 09:24 pm

The West African Examinations Council is an examination body that conducts examinations in Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gambia, and Liberia. In this post, I’ll share with you four criteria WAEC uses to mark English essays. The tips herein are also similar to the NECO English marking scheme.

The National Examination Council (NECO) is an examination body exclusively for Nigeria. In this post, I’ll also share some tips with you on how to draw your plan on your preferred choice.

Criteria used by WAEC or NECO examiners to mark English Essay:

  • C: Content (10 marks)
  • O: Organisation (10 marks)
  • E: Expression (20 marks)
  • MA: Mechanical Accuracy (10 marks)

In all, your essay is 50 marks. The acronym for these criteria is COEM. If you like, you can refer to the above criteria as the WAEC English marking scheme. Let’s take the above point one after the other for a full explanation and how you can leverage them to score A1 in your SSCE English Language. Note : For essay, the instruction is usually “Your essay should not be less than 450 words” you must pay attention to this.

Content has to do with the relevance of your ideas to the topic and its specific audience and purpose. Does your idea align with the topic you’ve chosen? Are you using the appropriate language? Are your points relevant to the central theme and its development? Pay attention to this and ensure that your approach is original. Try as you can to avoid injecting irrelevant ideas in your essay in a bid to make up the number. You will be penalised if you injected irrelevant ideas into your essay.

How to write good content:

  • Make sure you understand the topic before jumping on it.
  • Ensure that the topic you pick is something you can effectively deal with.
  • Let your topic be something you have enough points on, very important.

According to Lagos Books Club,  “Following the rules of grammar and punctuation judiciously is not sufficient, a passage without errors of language can be considered badly phrased or difficult to follow based on form and content.”

Organization

Organisation in your essay either in WAEC or NEC is very important. This isn’t limited to examination, in your speech and writing, you must perfectly arrange points. This refers to the correct use of formal features such as good paragraphing, appropriate use of emphasis and arrangement of ideas. Paragraphs are expected to be chronologically, spatially and logically coherent. It is advisable to have one point per paragraph, don’t cluster your points in one paragraph.

How to achieve great organisation in your English Essay

  • Examiners will always lookout for a good opening
  • Examiners will look out for adequate development into paragraphs
  • Make sure that there is balance and unity.
  • Let your paragraphs flow from one to the other to achieve coherence.
  • Ensure you have a logical flow of the paragraph.

Your expression carries the highest mark in English essays in NECO and WAEC. This is where you put your power of English expression and writing into work. The expression refers to the perfect use of grammar. Your expression must also be controlled and the structure of the sentence. A good expression will make your essay sound. It is an act of making your points known in clear words and sentences. Don’t be ambiguous.

How to achieve good expression in WAEC essay writing

  • Try not to use phrases such as: “In my opinion”
  • Avoid redundant word phrases.
  • Use linkers or linking words.

Linking Words you can use in English Essays are:

  • consequently,
  • subsequently,
  • in addition,
  • beside that,
  • additionally,
  • furthermore,
  • on the other hand,
  • on the contrary,
  • not only that

You don’t necessarily need to use “big” vocabulary when you have simple and easy-to-understand words that can convey the message appropriately. Write to express and convey your message, don’t write to impress

Mechanical Accuracy

Your use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling fall under mechanical accuracy. Your errors fall under mechanical accuracy. Each attracts 1/2 mark.

Important tips to know about NECO and WAEC essays

Credit will be awarded for what is done right while the penalty will be given for errors. You’re expected to write at least 450 words, but when a composition is below 450 words, the required length the maximum mark for M.A shall be proportionately reduced. If a candidate writes on a topic that is irrelevant to the question set, zero shall be awarded for content and organization.

Tips on how to prepare and Pass WAEC at one sitting

  • Read the recommended texts
  • Get past questions, compare and contrast to see some of the questions that are repeated nearly every year.
  • Revive what you’ve read before the exam date
  • Don’t be tense, ensure to relax before the exam date
  • In the exam hall, don’t panic.
  • Read the instructions when the question is given
  • Avoid any activity that could lead to being penalised by the invigilator
  • Read through the questions at least two times
  • Select the question which you have a comparative advantage on
  • Attempt the question that’s simple first to gain more time for those that looked technical.
  • Don’t waste time on a particular question
  • Try to finish before time, at least gain 20 minutes or more to go through your answers before submission. Avoid rush that could be costly.
  • Check your name, exam number, and centre before submission.
  • Strive as much as can to have your score fall between 60-75, this way you’re sure of at least C4, A1 is even better, you can do it.

Do you have questions on any of the tips shared above? Kindly use the comment box below to join start a conversation on WAEC marking scheme for the English language and tips on how to pass in WAEC and NECO.

No (3) Good morning respected judges, my worthy opponents, My colleagues and audience,

I (your name) hereby standing for the motion that says religious studies should be made compulsory for students in secondary schools and if I have your permission I would like to begin by defining religious studies. Religious studies also known as the study of religion , is an academic field devoted to research into religious beliefs, behaviors , and institutions. It describes, compares, interprets, and explains religion, emphasizing systematic, historically based, and cross-cultural perspectives.

From The above definition it is obvious that religious studies is of great important and should be made compulsory in secondary schools with The following points of mine.

Firstly, One of the most common importance of Religious teachings is that it helps students understand the place of various religions in our society. It helps them resolve the important questions of their own inner self and this understanding contributes to a more just and cohesive society.

Secondly, Religious education in any school should not simply be a subject making up a proportion of the taught curriculum.

It needs to pervade the congenial environment in the school. Such an environment is not just good for the school but also for the society as a whole as well primarily because students are themselves the propagators of moral values and these are the values that are the most valued and cherished for the quality of relationships amongst the whole humanity.

By listening and responding to stories from religious traditions, students are assimilating it as part of their personal, social and emotional development. They have opportunities to take part in celebrations and special events whilst using their understanding in communication, language and literacy. Utilising artefacts, music, stories and art from varying cultures helps them in increasing their knowledge and understanding of the world increases as they ask questions about religion, culture and worship and develop attitudes of curiosity and respect.

Thirdly, It introduces students to different cultures and religions through various learning about stories, people, places and times of special importance, and artefacts and beliefs that are part of modern life and society. Students are encouraged to respond sensitively to all religions, traditions and cultures, using their imagination and sense of wonder. I believe I have confused you enough with my points. Their study of faiths develops appropriate, secular view of the world and a religious community with a significant local presence. Thank You.

No (4) Once upon a time there lived a carefree and complacent young man named, Jagu. He had high dreams but low actions. He often dreamed and boasted that one day he will amaze the world with his feats. His father was a very wise man. He wanted to put some sense in him. He wanted to instil in him that if he wanted to be successful, he must work for it. So, he made a plan to teach his lesson. He took the help of a fortuneteller.

He sent him to Jagu. The fortuneteller said to Jagu. “I am a famous fortuneteller; I know something big is going to happen in your life on the first day of the next month. Take this flower and keep it with you.” Jagu was quite excited to get the flower from the fortuneteller.

He went home and told the incident that success was coming his way. He will prove it to the world on the first day of the next month. He told all his friends and relatives. Everyone was curious to see as to what would happen on the first day of the next month. The most excited person was Jagu himself. The night before the first day of the next month he could not sleep. And the next morning as he woke up, he found the day to be as normal as the other days had been. No news of any success came. The day came and just went ordinarily. Jagu became quite dejected.

At the right time his father came and told Jagu, “Success does not come with dreaming and predictions, you have to work hard and win it and create it. Go out, and create your own success with efforts.” Jagu learnt the lesson and stopped counting his chickens before they were hatched.

How To Answer Questions on Essay and Letter Writing In WAEC & NECO – Tips and Strategies

Essay and Letter Writing In WAEC and NECO in English language pose a lot of challenges to most students who do not know the skills, tips and strategies of passing this part in the theory section. WAEC and NECO examiners made this paper compulsory for all candidates to attempt because they know if candidates are given as an option, 90% would skip this part.

I will give you some key-points to note which would aide you in answering Essay writing as well as letter writing questions with ease in your exam. Also, i will put you through on how to count the words to ensure you are on track because when faced with writing an essay or letter writing of about 450 words, you need to be sure much time isn’t wasted on this section because there are other questions that need to be attempted with the limited time awarded to you.

Points To Note

1) Ideally, English language paper 1, section A allocates 50 minutes for you to choose just one (1) question among five questions set, be it an essay or letter writing topic, to prove your ability to communicate in writing.

2) The one question to be answered carries 50 marks, distributed thus;

  • Content (substance) of your work and relevance to the set question – 10 marks
  • Organization (including use of correct formats and paragraphing) – 10 marks
  • Expression (Effective use languages) – 20 marks
  • Mechanical accuracy (avoidance of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors) – 10 marks

3) You are required to prove your ability to communicate in writing in not less than 450 words. That is, if you are to write 10 words in a line, you should be able to produce an essay of not less than 45 lines long; if 9 words per line – 50 lines; if 8 words – 56 lines; if 7 words – 64/65 line; If 6 words – 75 line; if 5 words – 90 lines, etc.

Always ensure you start from the beginning of the first paragraph of your word (be it an essay or letter writing) to count.

By now you ought to have known the average number of words you write on a line. If not, start practicing now.

How To Count The Number of Words In Essay and Letter Writing In WAEC & NECO Exam

Write up a page, pick 6 lines at random and count the number of words each contains. The number of words that appear most frequently should be taken as the number of words you write on a line. For example, if line 1 contains 7 words, line 2 – 8 words, line 3 – 6 words, line 4 – 7 words, line 6 – 6 words and line 6 – 7 words; then you write 7 words in a line. You already know that 7 words in a line will give you 65 lines. Count out 65 lines before you begin to answer your questions and put a dot at the margin of your answer sheet to remind you to start rounding off as you approach 65 lines.

4) The five questions usually set are drawn from essay and letter writing type. They include;

  • Letter writing – Formal, informal and semi formal
  • Narrative essay
  • Descriptive essay
  • Argumentative essay – Debates/Speeches
  • Expository essay – Explanations and Directions.
  • Creative writing

Questions are set on Article and Report Writing. Article writing falls into any of the types listed above, except letter writing. Report writing equally falls into any of the listed types, except argumentative essay. The question asked will specify whether your report writing will be in letter or essay form.

Guidelines on Essay and Letter Writing – Tips and Strategies

1) Read through all the questions with an open mind. Give each some thoughts, the select the one you understand properly and have sufficient points to write on. For instance, some candidates wrongly make up their minds before entering the examination hall, that they will answer any question asked for informal letter writing . A case in point is that of informal letter writing asking a candidate to write ‘explaining how a relationship with a friend went sour’.  Many candidates dabble into that question without knowing the meaning of ‘sour’.  The result is that they wrote out of point and lost all their marks in both content and organization (20 marks out of 50 marks).

2) Know your limitations and choose an appropriate question. If you are not good at creating a story or managing the past tense, definitely you cannot write well on a narrative essay topic, etc. Remember you have a wide choice as you are required to answer only one question out of five.

3) Note the appropriate format to use in answering the question you have carefully chosen. For instance, if you have chosen a question on Article Writing, do not use a letter writing format. Write only the topic and start your introductory paragraph. You will lose marks under organization if a letter writing format is used.

4) Jot down the points you want to use as they come to your mind. Number them sequentially, as you intend to bring them into your work. The few minutes devoted to planning your work are extremely useful as they help you produce organized work with full control.

5) Just incase you have jotted too many points down, select 4 good written points to expatiate on. Dwelling on them at length and convincingly while remembering your essay should not be more than 450 words long. At the same time, a short essay will earn you low scores in organization and mechanical accuracy .

6) Pay good attention to paragraphing.  The first word of each paragraph should begin about three centimetres away from the left-hand margin. Each paragraph should begin with a new idea, so begin a new paragraph as you move to a new idea. However, two similar ideas that are brief can be merged into one paragraph. The content of the introductory and concluding paragraph must be appropriately chosen to match the format of the topic chosen.

7) Do not write on either margin of your answer sheets. The instructions there even tells you not to. Ensure you obey it. Number your questions you have chosen and are writing on, as well.

8) Devote the last 5 minutes of the time allotted for this section to reading over your work carefully, with the intention of detecting errors, misspelt words and incorrect punctuation that can cost you marks under Mechanical Accuracy.

9) After effecting corrections of detected errors, read through your work once more before finally moving to other sections of English language paper 1.

N.B: Try and limit or avoid the use of big words, especially the ones you cannot spell correctly nor use appropriately. Use simple English that takes you straight to the point without rigmarole. Use British spellings, not American spellings, as they are the ones commonly used in West Arica.

The points, tips, strategies explained above are the current WAEC and NECO recommended approach in Essay and letter writing from the examiners point of view. Using the guidelines and approach would fetch you a good score in essay and letter writing in WASSCE and NECO as well.

How to Master Literature in English for WAEC and NECO: A Step-by-step Guide

How to master Literature in English in WAEC and NECO

  • Introduction

How to master literature in English for WAEC and NECO is a challenge for so many students preparing for the final examinations. When I was preparing for my WAEC (West African Examinations Council) and NECO (National Examinations Council) exams, Literature in English seemed like a formidable challenge. The complex texts, the need to analyze themes, characters, and literary devices, and the pressure of essay writing made it a daunting subject.

However, with dedication, the right approach, and some essential strategies, I was able to not only read Literature in English effectively but also excel in these exams. In this article, I will share my journey and provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to read and pass Literature in English in WAEC and NECO.

Start Early and Consistently

Select key texts wisely, read actively, understand literary concepts, join study groups, practice essay writing, past questions and mock exams, how to master literature in english for waec and neco – steps.

To master Literature in English in both WAEC requires the steps below.

Firstly, success in Literature in English is starting your preparation early and maintaining consistency. Reading novels, plays, and poems requires time and effort. Begin by creating a study schedule that allocates specific time slots for reading and analyzing literary texts. Consistency is crucial to building a strong foundation in the subject.

I remember that I was just in the third term of SS2 (Grade 11) when I started preparing for the examinations. My friends and I started reading up all the texts that we could not read because of one reason or the other when we were in the previous class. We bought past questions and treated so many years of the PQ. Although it was not a smooth journey. With dedication and consistency, I was able to scale through with flying colours.

WAEC and NECO typically have a list of recommended texts. Choose these texts wisely, as they are the primary materials you will be examining. Read them thoroughly, taking note of essential themes, characters, and literary techniques. If possible, seek guidance from your teachers on which texts to prioritize.

Furthermore, You need to understand that in the examination, you are required to pick one of the drama and one of the prose questions. This should guide you on what to read and prepare for. An example is when you are required to pick between Wuthering Heights or Fences. Typically, If you prefer answering questions on Wuthering Heights, read up on everything that concerns the book starting from the text itself, the summary, the plot, the theme to the significance of each character in the text.

Active reading involves engaging with the text actively rather than passively flipping through pages. As you read, highlight or underline key passages , make annotations in the margins, and jot down notes about characters, plot developments, and literary devices. This practice helps you retain information and makes it easier to review later.

Avoid arbitrarily flipping through the pages of the texts. This is even one of those things that make students resort to chasing after the abridged or summarized version of the books. There is a need for you to have a personal encounter with the original text. Read them carefully. This will help you to answer difficult questions related to the activities of the characters in the text.

Literature in English is not just about reading; it also requires a strong grasp of literary concepts and terminology. Take the time to understand terms like symbolism, irony, foreshadowing, and allegory. Knowing these concepts will help you analyze texts more effectively. Additionally, it attracts more marks for you as a candidate. This will send a message to the examiner that you are well-prepared for the examination.

Conversely, a failure to be expressive with these literary concepts will make you lose your mark on the altar of ignorance.

Studying literature can be more enjoyable and effective when done in groups. Join or create a study group with classmates who are also preparing for WAEC and NECO. Discussing the texts, sharing insights, and asking questions can provide valuable perspectives and enhance your understanding.

You can also join our study online study group. You will meet with students who are keen to ace their examinations and teachers who are always ready to take you through the journey of learning.

The essay component is a significant part of Literature in English exams. Practice essay writing regularly by selecting essay topics related to the texts you’ve read. Pay attention to structure, coherence, and the use of evidence from the texts to support your arguments. Seek feedback from teachers or peers to improve your writing skills.

Here is a tip that your Literature teacher might forget to tell you: always write your answers in the present tense. This is the only acceptable way to answer Literature in English.

The passage was interesting. 1. Your mother has written to you asking of the profession you would like to pursue after leaving secondary school. Reply her letter, stating your preferred profession and giving reasons for making the choice.

4. Write an article suitable for publication in your school magazine on the topic: Indiscipline among Secondary School Students and Ways of Curbing it.

SECTION B COMPREHENSION (20 MARKS) You are advised to spend about 30 minutes on this section Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions on it. In this part of the world, one group that is yet to be appreciated by many is the “Teacher”. The teacher belongs to the noble profession. He is the molder of the society who frames the minds of the young ones that will take charge of the economic sector of the country in future. He develops the intellectual capacity of the would-be leaders. He develops from the cradle the analytical mind of the future diplomats and nutures to fruition the ideals of great political thinkers.

When religious leaders fail to impart the right knowledge, the teacher takes up the gawntlet for the re-orientation of the child when has been indoctrinated with the teaching of affluence and fanaticism This re-orierntation is done using moral instructions in schools. He emphasises the need for justice, love, honesty, sincerity, diigence, discipline, reward and punishment.

The teacher re-discovers the positive value in the mal-adjuned children. The  guidance counselor -a teacher-has been forced to perform the abandoned roles of the parents.

However, it is disappointing that all these become slave labour as the teacher has been seriously denigrated. The efforts of the teacher are not appreciated by the parents who  have neglected their duties, bandoning them to the techer. The teacher, a builder of nations” human resources”, is unfortunately despised and neglected by the people he made and institutions he is serving. The ruling class does not care about him. His issues ase not looked upon as important and are hardly remembered in parliament. His good work is remembered only during graduation ceremonies but forgotten as soon as the imparted knowledge places one in a position of authority.

The teacher who depends on the society which ought to protect him incidentally, has been enveloped by so much insensitivity of the society such that he is now abandoned to his fate.

The teacher has been unjustly accused of imposition of all forms of illegal levies and given all manner of names. He is the target of every othet group critical of the falling standard of education whereas the teacher has no power to improve on the infrastructure of the school and has no access to grants for impeovement of libraries or laboratorics. He is only to be seen and not to be beard. Consequently, the teacher cannot disabuse the mind of the misinformed public that has failed to ecognize his role as the greatest contributor to national growth and development.

Under this circumstance that the teacher has found himself, he has to work harder in order to train and produce better informed leaders. If he relaxes, things would get worse. If he works harder, there is hope that tomorrow would be better for the nation and for him.

(a) State two attributes of the teacher as mentioned in the passage. (b) Mention two instances in the passage that show that the public has been misinformned about the roles of the teacher. (c) What irony of life is highlighted in the passage? (d) What wrong values do religious leaders impart on the child? (e) How has the teacher corrected this teaching? (f) “.the teacher takes up the gauntlet..” What does the expression above mean? (g) “…who have neglected their duties…” (i) What grammatical name is given to this expression? (ii) What is its function in the sentence? Find one word or phrase which is nearest in meaning to and can at the same time replace each of the following words as used in the pussage: (i)noble (ii) cradle (iii) impart (iv) affluence (v) denigrated (vi) important

6. SECTION C SUMMARY [30 MARKSĮ You are advised to spend about 30 minutes on this section. Read the passage below carefully and answer the question on it.

A nation that is democratic usually would have democratic institutions. One of such institutions is the electoral commission. Constitutionally, the commission is a body responsible for organising and conducting elections in a political system. In other words, it is as an independent and impartial body mandated to organise and conduct elections in a given country. It has a chairman as the head and other members. For Instance, Nigeria has had several electoral commissions with different designations. Some of these are the Federal Electoral Commission of Nigeria (FEDECO), the National Electoral Commission (NEC), the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (NECON) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The above-named comnmissions are merely achange of nomenclature but the functions remain the same.

The statutory functions of the Commission need not be over-emphasised as they are aimed at conducting free and fair elections. The Commission is saddled with the responsibility of dividing the country into constituencies or electoral districts. The advantage is that it gives the electorate the opportunity to express their franchise easily. But the disadvantage is that it may lead to gerrymandering. That is, the leaders may construct the clectoral districts in such a way as to give the majority party more representations in the parliament. Political parties are registered according to laid down rules and regulations. In Nigeria, for example, before the conduct of the 2011 elections, INEC registered over 50 political parties that participated in the elections. In addition, the Commission also registered eligible voters. This is done manually or electronically. The expression of franchise by voters may take the form of restricted or universal adult suffrage. However, the latter is the most popular and universally acknowledged. It is constitutional and democratic because all qualified adults are allowed to vote and be voted for. The Cormnission educates the electorate about the necessary issues involved in elections. It informs the people about their rights, the method of voting to be adopted (either secret or open balloting), identification of party symbols and the proper manner of voting. The body also provides all necessary materials needed for an election (both sensitive and non-sensitive), such as ballot boxes, ballot papers, result sheets, etc. Moreso, aspirants for elections are properly screened and their eligibility duly ascertained before any election. This affirms the credibility of the candidate who is vying for any particular post.

Electoral officers like polling clerks, polling orderlies, presiding oficers and returning officers are appointed and trained by the Commission. These enhance the smooth conduct of elections. Finally, the Commission is responsible for the counting of votes and release of the results of each election conducted. This is to be done under strict supervision to avoid rigging of elections.

In six sentences, one for each, state the functions of an clectoral commission.

SOLUTIONS TO 2023 NECO ENGLISH PAPER 1 IS GIVEN BELOW

No 1: Your mother has written to you asking of the profession you would like to pursue after leaving secondary school. Reply her letter, stating your preferred profession and giving reasons for making the choice.

Your Address ,

Dear Mother,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. Thank you for your love and concern, as always. Your letter brought me much joy, and I am grateful for your support and interest in my future plans.

As I approach the end of my secondary school education here in Nigeria, I have carefully considered the profession I would like to pursue, and I am excited to share my decision with you. After much contemplation and soul-searching, I have set my heart on becoming a Civil Engineer.

I understand that this choice might come as a surprise to you, but allow me to explain my reasons for selecting this profession. First and foremost, I have always been intrigued by the world of construction and infrastructure development. Growing up in Nigeria, I have witnessed both the challenges and the opportunities we face in the field of civil engineering. The state of our roads, bridges, and public facilities often leaves much to be desired. I believe that as a civil engineer, I can play a pivotal role in improving the physical infrastructure of our nation, contributing to its progress and development.

Nigeria is a country with immense potential, and I am eager to be part of its transformation. With a rapidly growing population, there is a pressing need for skilled professionals who can design and build sustainable structures and systems. I want to be at the forefront of these efforts, ensuring that our communities have access to safe and reliable infrastructure.

Moreover, civil engineering is a field that offers diverse career opportunities. From designing and constructing buildings to working on transportation systems and water supply projects, there is a wide range of specializations within this profession. This flexibility excites me, as it allows me to explore different areas and find the niche that best aligns with my interests and strengths.

Another reason for choosing civil engineering is the potential to make a positive impact on the environment. I am deeply passionate about sustainability and environmental conservation. As a civil engineer, I can adopt eco-friendly practices and incorporate green technologies into my projects, reducing our ecological footprint and preserving the natural beauty of Nigeria for future generations.

Furthermore, pursuing a career in civil engineering is aligned with my academic strengths and interests. Throughout my secondary school education, I have consistently excelled in mathematics and physics. These subjects form the foundation of civil engineering, and I find great joy in applying their principles to solve real-world problems.

Lastly, I have conducted thorough research on reputable universities in Nigeria and beyond that offer excellent civil engineering programs. I am confident that with hard work and dedication, I can gain admission to one of these institutions and receive a quality education that will equip me with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in this field.

In conclusion, I am passionate about becoming a civil engineer and contributing to the development of Nigeria. I believe that this profession aligns with my values, interests, and academic strengths, providing me with the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of my fellow citizens. Your unwavering support means the world to me, and I promise to work diligently towards achieving this goal.

Thank you once again for your love and encouragement. I look forward to your response and the guidance you can offer as I embark on this exciting journey.

Sincerely Yours,

NUMBER TWO : Write a story to illustrate the saying: Charity begins at home.

(2) Once upon a time, in a quaint village nestled between lush green hills, there lived a humble farmer named Thomas. He was known far and wide for his generosity and willingness to help others. The saying “Charity begins at home” was one of his guiding principles, which he instilled in his three children – Emily, Daniel, and Sarah.

Thomas’ farm yielded bountiful crops, and the village thrived due to his hard work and dedication. However, despite their abundance, he always made sure to share the surplus with those less fortunate. Whenever someone in the village fell on hard times, Thomas and his family were the first to offer a helping hand.

One chilly winter morning, news spread that a severe storm had struck the neighboring village, leaving several families homeless and without food. Thomas gathered his family around the fireplace and said, “My dear children, it’s time to practice what we preach. Charity begins at home, and it’s our duty to assist our neighbors in need.”

Emily, the eldest daughter, agreed wholeheartedly, and Daniel and Sarah nodded in agreement. They all knew that their father’s compassionate nature had shaped their characters and taught them the true meaning of empathy.

The family began their charity work by donating warm blankets, clothes, and essential supplies from their own home. Emily helped organize the distribution, while Daniel and Sarah packed the items with care. The neighbors joined in, witnessing the selfless act of the Thomas family and contributing to the cause.

As the winter passed, the neighboring village slowly regained its strength, and the grateful villagers praised Thomas and his family for their immense support. But their acts of kindness didn’t end there. They continued to assist those in need within their village too.

One day, a massive fire broke out on the outskirts of Thomas’ village, threatening to engulf homes and farmlands. The entire village was in panic, and everyone tried their best to save their properties. Thomas’ family rushed to the scene, but instead of joining the rescue efforts, they prepared food and water for the exhausted firefighters and victims.

When the fire was finally brought under control, the firefighters and the distressed villagers were famished. Thomas and his family went around distributing food and water, comforting those who lost their homes, and even offering temporary shelter at their farmhouse.

Over time, Thomas’ children began to comprehend the true depth of the saying “Charity begins at home.” They realized that it wasn’t just about helping others but about creating a culture of compassion and kindness within their own community.

The children grew up embodying their father’s virtues and passed on the values of selflessness to their own families. The Thomas family became a beacon of hope and inspiration for the entire region. Their village flourished not just because of their agricultural prosperity but because of the unity and compassion that bound its people together.

Generations came and went, but the legacy of the Thomas family endured. The saying “Charity begins at home” echoed through time, reminding everyone that the seeds of kindness sown within the confines of one’s home can blossom into a garden of love and support for the entire world.

Title: The Establishment of Federal Government Colleges: A Blessing to the Nigerian Child Introduction : Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed judges, and fellow debaters, good morning/afternoon. Today. I stand before you as a chief speaker, representing those against the proposition “The Establishment of Federal Government Colleges is a Blessing to the Nigerian Child” While providing some form of education and resources to Nigerian children, Federal Government colleges are not necessarily a blessing as they can bring about numerous negative aspects that can outweigh their potential benefits. I will argue why this is the case and share my view on the current situation. Point number one: Lack of Resources and Quality Education. Federal Government colleges are often poorly funded, meaning they tend to have limited access to resources and technology. This can lead to a lack of quality education being offered to Nigerian children. Moreover, the poor educational environment can prevent children from achieving their full potential, leading to a further gap between the educated and uneducated population. Point Number two: Limited Access to Facilities and Services. Due to the low funding, Federal Government colleges also have limited access to other facilities and services. This means that students may not be able to participate in extra-curricular activities or have access to basic healthcare services. This can have a long-term negative effect on the overall wellbeing of pupils and even affect their academic performance. Conclusion :

In conclusion, while Federal Government colleges may provide some level of education and resources to Nigerian children, the lack of resources and quality education as well as Limited access to facilities and services mean it is not a blessing to the Nigerian child and should not be accepted as one. Thank you.

INTRODUCTION: Indiscipline has become a growing concern among secondary school students, posing a significant challenge for educators, parents, and their peers alike. The consequences of such behaviour can be far-reaching and damaging both to the learner’s individual development and to the climate of the school as a whole. From negative impacts on academic attainment and safety to absenteeism and bullying, the risks are real, and a concerted effort is needed from all sides to tackle it.

THE CAUSES OF INDISCIPLINE: Young people, reaching into adolescence and early adulthood, are at an important stage of their development. This delicate period of transition comes with a variety of pressures, such as physical, emotional, and learning changes, and these can often lead to misbehaviour in the classroom. Other external factors, such as family issues or inadequate parenting, can also contribute to the problem.

THE EFFECTS OF INDISCIPLINE: Unmanaged student indiscipline can have profound effects on the classroom. It can lead to further disruption and distraction, resulting in all pupils having a poorer learning experience and ultimately a lower academic performance. It can also create feelings of fear and general unease among other pupils and staff, discouraging effective communication and damaging morale.

SOLUTIONS FOR CURBING INDISCIPLINE: Recognizing the problem is the first step towards finding a solution. The most successful interventions are those that involve multiple stakeholders, such as students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

Effective communication between all parties is key. Schools must strive to foster an environment that encourages open dialogue, transparency, and trust. An open-door policy between teachers and students, providing a safe space in which either can approach the other at any time, can be instrumental for developing mutual understanding.

The school curriculum should also be designed to engage learners and promote discipline. An understanding of the subjects being taught, and enjoyable activities related to them, can help create a positive atmosphere, motivating pupils to stay on task and perform better. To help ensure that this happens, schools should be able to tap into support and resources available from local organisations and charities.

In addition, schools must establish clear and consistent disciplinary systems, making sure that all members of the school community are aware of the rules. This should include start-of-term assemblies, parent-teacher meetings, and visible reminders throughout the premises. In the case of serious disciplinary issues, swift action should be taken, including – in extreme cases – sanctions.

CONCLUSION: It is incumbent upon us all – teachers, parents, and students – to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for secondary school students. Like any problem, managing indiscipline is a matter of addressing its causes and providing the right solutions. Through cooperation, open communication, and an effective school system, we can work together to tackle it and ensure a harmonious learning environment for the future.
