Develop your creative work with the support of internationally renowned, award-winning novelists, poets and nonfiction writers. The Creative Writing team at Queen Mary includes Rachael Allen, Katherine Angel, Brian Dillon, Michael Hughes, Nisha Ramayya, Rivers Solomon, and Isabel Waidner. Guest speakers on the programme have included Alexander Chee, Olivia Laing, Darran Anderson, A.K. Blakemore and more.

The MA Creative Writing provides a grounding in research methodologies and practices for students who intended to progress to doctoral work, an enhanced understanding of the study of literature relevant to students who intended to follow a teaching career, and improved competence in transferable skills valued more generally in the market place, including the analysis of complex evidence, the oral and written presentation of arguments and information, and effective time-management. Employer feedback has particularly valued the research skills and high level of critical thinking acquired by graduates of similar MA programmes and the contribution these make to the problem-solving abilities required of those who work at senior levels in complex organizations.

Access to HE Diploma

We consider applications from students with the Access to Higher Education Diploma. The minimum academic requirement is to achieve 60 credits overall with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 15 credits must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit or higher. This must include at least 6 Level 3 credits in English Literature or Literacy modules at Distinction.

We consider applications from students offering an EPQ and may make an alternative offer to include three A levels, one grade lower than our usual requirement, along with a specific grade in the EPQ.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

A minimum of five GCSE passes to include English at grade C or 4 or an acceptable equivalent will be required.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

6,5,5 in HL subjects, including a minimum of 6 in HL English A.

Our BA in English with Creative Writing will give you a sound knowledge base in literature, along with the all-important tools you need to become a writer.

You'll gain a deeper understanding of literary history and theory, exploring subjects from medieval literature and Shakespeare to modernism, postcolonialism and contemporary writing.

Headed by acclaimed writer Professor Brian Dillon (Essayism, Suppose a Sentence), the creative writing element of the course is designed to help you find your voice, develop your practical skills and techniques, and give you an insight into the process of writing. The team comprises of poet , novelist and Goldsmiths Prize Winner, .

You'll have the opportunity to grow and flourish as a writer in a safe and supportive environment, whether in prose, poetry or creative non-fiction.

Top job areas of graduates

The jobs market for this subject - which includes creative writing and scriptwriting courses - is not currently one of the strongest, so unemployment rates are currently looking quite high overall, with salaries on the lower side. But nevertheless, most graduates get jobs quickly. Graduates often go into careers as authors and writers and are also found in other roles where the ability to write well is prized, such as journalism, translation, teaching and advertising and in web content. Be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common is common in the arts, as are what is termed 'portfolio careers', having several part-time jobs or commissions at once - although graduates from this subject were a little more likely than many other creative arts graduates to be in conventional full time permanent contracts, so that might be worth bearing in mind.

English is one of the most popular degree subjects and in 2015, more than 11,000 students graduated with English degrees - although this does represent a fall from recent years. As good communication is so important to modern business, you can find English graduates in all parts of the economy, although obviously, you can't expect to get a job in science or engineering (computing is a different matter - it's not common but good language skills can be useful in the computing industry). There's little difference in outcomes between English language and English literature degrees, so don't worry and choose the one that suits you best. More English grads took another postgraduate course when they finished their degree than grads from any other subject - this is an important option. Teacher training was a common choice of second degree, as was further study of English, and journalism courses. But many English graduates changed course and trained in law, marketing or other languages -or even subjects further afield such as computing, psychology and even nursing. This is a very flexible degree which gives you a lot of options

Interested in what’s on stage and screen? But also want an insight into the process of writing? Combining drama and creative writing is the perfect way to explore both and find your place in this exciting industry. We’ll introduce you to a variety of cultures and historical periods while teaching you different writing techniques used to engage audiences. There’s more to studying drama than being a skilled performer – it’s about being a skilled writer, researcher and collaborator too. You’ll be challenged to make discoveries using a mixture of practice and theory. At the same time, you’ll grow as a writer and develop your style, supported by academics who have published memoirs, essays, poetry, and much more.

When you’re not putting pen to paper, you’ll be in our studio theatres and rehearsal rooms. This is where your ideas will come to life, with support from our technical team. From free theatre tickets to top employers and internship opportunities, London is a great place to start writing your success story. We work with companies like Clean Break who were recently at the National Theatre. Our graduates aren't just performers, actors and writers – they are communications managers, marketing executives, PR professionals and teachers. You’ll find our graduates working National Theatre, Netflix and Disney – and we can’t wait to see where you’ll take your career.

Course summary

Study Drama and Creative Writing in this boundary-breaking course. Our BA in Drama with Creative Writing will give you a sound knowledge base in Drama along with the skills and tools needed to develop into a writer. In the Drama part of the course, you will gain a deeper understanding of theatre and performance in a variety of cultures and historical periods, and across a wide range of forms - from plays to experimental performance to applied theatre, and more. The Creative Writing section of the course is designed to develop practical writing skills and techniques, and to give you an insight into the process of writing. You will have the opportunity to grow and flourish as a writer, whether in prose fiction, poetry, drama, film or creative non-fiction. You will be taught by some of the world's leading academics and artists, who will help you develop into informed critics, performance makers and writers.

Year 1 Year 1 provides an introduction to the study of drama, performance and creative writing. which combines both practical and theoretical approaches. Modules in Year 1 have a strong emphasis on the acquisition of practical (including writing) and research skills that you will use throughout your programme. You will also have the opportunity in Year 1 to explore key practical and theoretical issues around the making of performance. You will take the following modules (all compulsory) Power Plays (15 credits) Making Theatre and Performance (30 credits) Introduction to Creative Writing (30 credits) Beyond Acting (30 credits) Spectatorship: Time, Place, Performance (15 credits) Please note that all modules are subject to change. Assessment method

Assessment typically includes a combination of written and practical assignments, such as essays, performances, presentations, portfolios, scripts, programme notes, reviews, feature articles, artist websites, podcasts and dissertations. Some assessment is based around group work, especially for performance projects and presentations.

The programme offers an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge and research in arts and mental health, with a particular emphasis on theatre and performance. This innovative and unique MSc is for you if you are a recent graduate from any arts discipline or from a mental health related field (psychology, health sciences, social sciences and related areas), as well as professionals working in the fields of applied arts practice, mental health, education, social work and related areas. The programme is jointly run by the Centre for Psychiatry and the Department of Drama.

What you'll study

This programme is grounded in both arts and science methodologies and perspectives. Examine mental health theory and practice through a critical approach which establishes the central role of the arts in mental health. Study the history, theory and practice of the arts for mental health promotion, the representation of mental health in the arts, and arts intervention for the prevention and treatment of mental distress (with a focus on theatre and performance).

You will study how the creative arts can be used to think critically about concepts and experiences of mental health and the mental health system. You will investigate how arts practices can be means of prevention and intervention in mental health, as well as ways of engaging the public with these concerns.

Through practice and critical writing, you will undertake research in specific areas of arts and mental health through critical analysis of representation of mental health within the arts and the applications of the arts in specific contexts, to alleviate or prevent mental distress and improve mental health. The course is not clinical, therefore you will not leave with a clinical accreditation in mental health practice or art therapy. Rather, the course is based on practice, research and critical thinking. You will be encouraged to develop your own specialist interest in relation to the arts and mental health, whether you come from an arts or a science background.

We aim to develop pioneering research in best practices for better, more effective collaborations among arts practitioners, healthcare practitioners and patients, so we can best serve the interests of all within mental health, social care and education systems.

Additional costs

You may have to pay for entrance charges and travel for performances, exhibitions and field visits, although such costs will be kept to a minimum. Set books are usually available through the library, but you may wish to buy your own copy in some instances.

Compulsory/Core modules

Performing mental health.

"This module explores the performance of mental health and mental illness as they have been defined across history, and in the contemporary moment. In particular the module asks how the social construction of mental health is reflected in and produced by performance. While the module focuses on the types of subjectivity and selfhood that have emerged in the history of theatre and performance, students are also encouraged to explore ways other creative practices engage these topics. Special attention is given to representations of 'madness' and `mental illness' produced in historical performance, as well as to how these representations have since been reinterpreted and adapted to reflect current constructions and concerns. In addition we will consider a variety of contemporary and collaborative performance practices that interrogate attitudes relating to normative concepts of mental health, and even try to intervene into policy and care. Students will be introduced to broad debates on mental health from within the Humanities and informed by the approaches of disability studies. "

Critical Mental Health Sciences

This module examines contemporary debates within the field of mental health theory and practice from the critical premise that the dominant, so-called `biomedical¿ model of mental health is in urgent need of reform. Students will learn about critical approaches to assessment and diagnosis, psychiatric treatments, and mental health theory. They will also start to consider how the arts can contribute to a critical approach to mental health. Examples of themes include: critical psychiatry; the Power Threat Meaning Framework; Open Dialogue; a psychoanalytic framework for understanding unconscious emotional processing; social justice and mental health; survivors¿ and service users¿ narratives and critiques, including through the arts.

Critical Encounters in Arts and Mental Health

This module examines productive intersections between the arts and mental health from a critical perspective. It investigates the use of arts-based practices as research, education, health intervention, advocacy and activism in mental health. Students will learn about contemporary art practice which interrogates, critiques and/or contributes to mental health theory and practice. Examples of themes include: art interventions with groups and communities for the promotion of mental health and as preventive measure; creative enquiry for professional development; a psychoanalytic framework for understanding the role of the arts in emotional processing; artistic practices which give voice to survivors¿ narratives and concepts, including towards activism.

Dissertation

This module is designed for students undertaking a research project in their chosen area of mental health. Although this module is predominately independent study, students are expected to complete a set of formative assessments and have regular contact with their supervisor in order to monitor progress.

Elective modules

Theatre for young people: pedagogy in practice.

This module offers a group placement within a young people's theatre company or other relevant arts organisation working with young people. The organisations offering the group placement will normally be working with young people in mental health contexts, or with young people who have experiences of social and mental health issues. It offers the opportunity to observe, learn and develop arts-based teaching methodologies with and for young people and to explore the social, mental and creative benefits of the arts for young people.

Performance, Activism, Social Justice

This module explores how performance contributes to social justice, especially through activism. It examines: activist movements, such as Black Lives Matter, Extinction Rebellion, and activism for indigenous rights; activist practices and actions, spanning pacifism and violence, and including occupations, events like carnivals, and performances such as verbatim theatre; and intersecting theories of activism, social justice, and performance, such as Boal¿s Poetics of the Oppressed, Judith Butler¿s theory of assembly, and Christina Sharpe¿s theory of wake-work, drawing on wider literatures in, for example, critical race theory, environmental humanities, queer theory, law, and disability rights. The module focuses on the present but explores historical roots, such as the Diggers and Levellers of the English Civil War, South African Township Theatre, women's suffrage movements, struggles for abolition and decolonisation, and activism in relation to disability, AIDS, and more. It explores arguments for activism's benefits but also explorations of its limits. It considers how performance studies can help us better understand ¿ and potentially practice ¿ activism for social justice, and how performance might particularly contribute to action for social change.

Text, Self, Performance

This module explores through practice the relation between text, self, and performance, in order to investigate critically the way performance may articulate individual experience, to invoke or confirm aspects of collective identity, and to complicate the assumed relations between performances and texts. Through weekly practical workshops and contextual research, you will explore forms, methodologies and topics including (for example): writing for solo performance, live art, verbatim and documentary theatre, improvisation, protest performance, and oral histories. Your practical investigations will be embedded in critical readings in identity politics and social justice, in relation to identity formations including gender, sexuality, race, class and ability. In your engagement with found or created texts, you will consider truth and dissemblance, authenticity and representation, auto/biography and disclosure, particularity and community, the politics of representation, and the ethics of performance. Throughout, an emphasis is placed on testing the limits of familiar approaches to creating and performing texts.

You will write a 10,000-15,000-word final dissertation, using an art-based or science-based methodology or an original and comprehensive systematic literature review.

Where applicable, you will be required to obtain ethics applications for your research.

You will be matched with at least one dissertation supervisor from either Drama or Psychiatry, based on your topic and methods of research, who will offer you individual tutorials.

You will learn through a mixture of specialist lectures delivered by academics, clinicians and artists, seminars and group work, practice-based workshops and field visits. Research skills are taught in dedicated seminars.

As part of your chosen elective you may undertake a work placement within an organisation that operates in a field related to creative arts and mental health. Alternatively, you can develop your own arts practice through a dedicated module.

Professor Bridget Escolme

Prof Escolme researches and teaches Shakespeare and his contemporaries in performance, costume in the theatre, and the performance of emotion in historical and contemporary performance culture. She has worked as a director, a performer, a dramaturge, and a theatre and education practitioner.

Dr Maria Grazia Turri

DPhil, PhD, MRCPsych

Dr Turri worked as psychiatrist in the NHS for 15 years. Her research focuses on understanding processes of identification in theatre through psychoanalytic theory. She teaches on psychoanalysis, theatre history and theories, and the intersection between psychiatry and the arts.

About the Role The Department of English in the School of English and Drama in Queen Mary’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences seeks to appoint a part-time (0.5 FTE) Lecturer in Creative Writing (Teaching and Scholarship). This 12-month fixed-term Lectureship is to provide cover for parental leave, and to contribute to our general teaching provision where appropriate. The successful applicant will be able to contribute to the development and delivery of teaching in the Creative Writing area. Modules may include Introduction to Creative Writing (Level 4), Creative Writing Prose: Fiction and Nonfiction (Level 5), Creative Writing Prose Fiction (Level 6) and Collaborative Practices (Level 7).

About You The successful applicant will hold a PhD in Creative Writing, English or a related field. Alternatively, you may have equivalent publication record or professional experience. Experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels is an essential requirement, as is an ability to contribute to a range of Creative Writing modules.
