In tonight's special assignment: The Forgotten Epidemic- The Opioid Crisis, better or worse, we're examining the overdose death numbers, specifically in each of our counties over the past 2 years, to see if the drug epidemic is better or worse than before the pandemic.

Let's take a look at our local counties.

These numbers from the Ohio Department of Health compare 2019 overdose deaths with those in 2020.

They show Belmont County saw an increase of one death.

Last week, Belmont County 911 reported 145 overdoses in 2019 and 200 in 2020.

Cumberland Trail Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Grady says the pandemic could be contributing to the increase.

"Restrictions on what we can do, people working from home, some people losing their jobs, trying to homeschool children, not being able to see family and friends all plays a role in our mental and physical health," he said.

In other areas, ODH shows Carroll County with five more deaths.

Columbiana County has a decrease of four.

Jefferson County shows an increase of two deaths; so does Harrison.

Monroe County dropped by one, while noble was up one death.

Tuscarawas County, most notably, is up 12 deaths.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost says more Ohioans died of an opioid overdose over a 3-month span in the second quarter of last year than at any other time since the pandemic began.

"The why question is the difficult one," he said.

Not surprisingly, the jump in overdose deaths began last April, after the stay at home order was issued.

"You can see on the time plot that it actually coincided with COVID. But COVID doesn’t make people overdose," Yost said.

Yost cited stimulus checks and isolation as possible reasons for the uptick.

But finding funding to address the crisis during a pandemic is an uphill battle.

"At the end of the day, we're in this for the long haul. This is not a magic wand with a billion dollars that we could wave it," Yost said.

When we compared the data in West Virginia, we found 2020 information is so far unavailable.

According to the health statistics center, these are the overdose death numbers from 2019.

Hancock county saw 11 deaths.

Brooke County -9

Ohio County -- 26

Marshall County -- 7

Tyler County -- 2 deaths

And Wetzel County -- 6

Keep in mind, none of these statistics in either state are final. Numbers lag by 6 months to a year, based on state reporting systems. But we do know in Wheeling, at least, that the number of overdoses have spiked dramatically since the start of the pandemic.

“And then what happened? Covid. So obviously, as I've talked to my colleagues across the region and across the United States, they've all seen increases in overdoses. So we are attributing that to COVID. But this is a 5-year trend upward for us,” Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey also expressed concern.

"We need to get on top of this right away," he said.

"West Virginia is one of those states where we were really making a lot of progress on getting the numbers down, and then COVID struck."

Congressman David McKinley says he's fought for more federal backing when it comes to the opioid epidemic.

“I don't know when the pandemic is going to be behind us. No one seems to know that right now. I'm hoping in the meantime, we can at least try to get them to refocus and the impact it's still having on families,” he said.

The CDC says opioids appear to be the primary driver of increases in overdose deaths, compared to other types of narcotics.

That's not surprising news to Eloise Traina, CEO of Family Recovery Center in Jefferson County.

"The drugs are certainly coming through here. We're finding a lot of opioid synthetics, coming through. Fentanyl. It's much higher use," she said.

Traina says in the midst of the pandemic, some addicts are finding themselves reverting back to old habits.

"It’s easier sometimes to get ahold of a drug dealer than it is finding someplace to get treatment," she said.

While we found overdose deaths in local counties didn't change too much overall, we've previously reported on overall area drug use as seeing a major increase from Belmont County to Wheeling and beyond.

Some local areas are up by more than 50 percent in reported drug use.

On Wednesday, NEWS9's Julianna Furfari is examining some alarming statistics.

More than 81,000 people died due to drug overdoses in the 12 months from May 2019 through May 2020.

That's the largest number of overdose deaths recorded in a year.

It's a dangerous trend that forced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue a health advisory last month.

Ryan So died after accidental rifle discharge. What to know about the Scottsdale detective

Scottsdale Detective Ryan So died of injuries after a rifle accidentally discharged while he was on duty June 13.

"It is with an unbelievably heavy heart we announce that Detective Ryan So #1473 has succumbed to duty-related injuries sustained earlier this evening and has passed away," Scottsdale police said on the evening of his death .

"This is an unimaginable tragedy for both Ryan’s family and his police family at SPD.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Detective So’s family, his team, and everyone across our police department.”

Mesa police were investigating So's death.

Here's what is known at this point.

What happened to Ryan So?

Police officers received a call to the area around 76th Street and Greenway Hayden Loop about 7:30 p.m. June 13 for an officer in need of emergency assistance.

On the evening of June 14, Scottsdale Police said the preliminary investigation from the Mesa Police Department (which is part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team), showed the death was the result of an accidental weapon discharge .

The Scottsdale Police Department announced that So and other detectives in the agency's Special Assignment Unit had completed a search warrant and arrest operation. While they were unloading equipment, police said So was moving a bag from a vehicle when a rifle from the bag fell to the ground and discharged. So was hit.

Police said fellow detectives immediately rendered aid, but So died at a hospital.

That night, his body was taken to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office. A procession of police cars provided an escort.

How long was So with Scottsdale police?

So was a nine-year Scottsdale police department veteran. He was with the Special Assignments Unit.

He was a military veteran, too, serving four years in the U.S. Navy, Scottsdale police said.

What else has the Scottsdale Police Department said?

The department's second statement, which included details on the preliminary investigation into his death, also said, "The loss of Detective So is deeply felt throughout the entire community. We will forever honor his sacrifice and remember his legacy as a hero who dedicated his life to serving and protecting others."

Who are Detective So's survivors?

So was survived by his wife and three children.

Will there be a memorial service for him?

The Scottsdale Police Department indicated that further details on how the public could show its respects and contribute would be provided in coming days.

These organizations were accepting donations and supporting So's family.

Question Time Leaders’ Special: not even Starmer had a good night

As before, the Labour leader was weakest on the Corbyn question.

By Andrew Marr

special assignment tonight

The most remarkable takeaway from BBC’s Question Time leaders’ special was that Rishi Sunak didn’t punch anybody. He looked very much as if he wanted to, clashing snippily with audience members (at one point getting shouts of “shame!” from those who disagreed with him over the European Court of Human Rights). But, he didn’t actually whack a voter.

As this disastrous election campaign careers on, the Prime Minister has developed what can only be described as an angry smile – both very angry and very smiley. He is under extreme pressure and must be close to blowing up. That he hasn’t lost it in public so far is a major endorsement for Hinduism.

Sunak pitched particularly hard and most effectively to anti-immigrant audience members – he has honed his eloquence on this in response to the challenge Reform and Nigel Farage have mounted on the question. He was applauded for it.

Challenged by a furious voter about the latest Tory betting scandal, he said that he was as angry as anyone but refused to cut the relevant candidates loose and looked as if he was about to be sick. He got no cut-through on the NHS or his national service plan.

Fiona Bruce, who is frankly superb – well briefed and able to pick the perfect moment to crisply but politely cut in, the result of many many hours of hosting the show – skewered him about the lack of specific sanctions for those who declined to do national service, so that he had to take refuge in a Royal Commission… And we all know what that means.

Yet at some level it is impressive and admirable that Sunak keeps on fighting. After the last few weeks, most sentient humans would be huddled under the nearest table in the foetal position, biting their fists and muttering every filthy word they’d ever heard. But Rishi is still here, still talking about Keir Starmer and tax. It is not impossible that some voters will come back to the Tories at the end of the campaign purely out of admiration for his doggedness.

As before, Starmer was weakest on the Corbyn question: Bruce skewered the Labour leader by repeatedly asking him whether he meant it when he said he would be a great prime minister. Almost all of his responses are now rehearsed and familiar, though he struggled over the lack of a migration target and the consequences for public services and housing. He now uses the word “progressive” to describe himself. “I am a common sense politician” will become a refrain. Compared to previous outings, he seemed relaxed though he must be careful of giving the impression that he is coasting to victory.

We have a curious exhibition of cross-dressing when it comes to villainy. Keir Starmer compares Sunak to Jeremy Corbyn; last night Sunak retaliated by comparing Keir Starmer to… Liz Truss. But all this is much too clever to impress normal people. Like so much that goes over the heads of the electorate, it smells of the over-excited spin room and the callow research nerd.

But a carefully selected audience, at least, has a clear and unforgiving memory. Ed Davey, gamely channelling his “sad bear” vibe, was badly beaten up over the Lib-Dem coalition student tuition fees U-turn. He was then precisely questioned over his role as post office minister in 2010, when he first refused to meet Alan Bates during the horizon scandal. Davey told the audience: “I made two big mistakes.” He did all right but the plain people of Britain, it seems, are bored of seeing him scooting down waterslides.

The SNP’s affable undertaker John Swinney, gained loud applause for his policy of re-joining the European Union and for choosing Starmer over Sunak as his preferred winner. He was the most passionate sounding contender but failed to win the room by dodging the question of whether he’d keep trying for independence referendums until he got the result he wanted.

This version of the Question Time format – which ditched the horseshoe table of dissent and cut-across for these four individual interrogations – lacked the drama or the follow through of a proper interview. The party leaders were all set up as willing candidates for the top job (though of course it is not exactly a competitive race). And, I’m not sure that (from the audience’s point of view) any of them quite cut the mustard for the role on offer.

Philadelphia Phillies Will Wear Special Patch For Cole Hamels' Ceremony on Friday

Brady farkas | 22 hours ago.

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels (35) is doused with water after throwing a no hitter against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in 2015.

  • Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies are set to honor the career of former left-hander Cole Hamels on Friday night in a ceremony at Citizens Bank Park. It's an official retirement ceremony for the former All-Star.

Per Tim Kelly, who covers the Phillies, the team will be wearing a special uniform patch for the occasion:

Kelly also confirmed that the team will be wearing the City Connect uniforms still for the game.

Had a couple people ask, so I confirmed: The Phillies are still wearing the City Connect uniforms for this game. @PhilliesNation @UniWatch @sportslogosnet https://t.co/E7ASjmNonJ — Tim Kelly (@TimKellySports) June 20, 2024

According to the team, the festivities begin at 6:25 p.m. ET before the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The on-field festivities will begin at 6:25 p.m., as the Phillies and special guests honor Hamels, who will officially retire as a Phillie. Hamels, who played for the club from 2006-2015, is one of the team’s homegrown core players who defined one of the most successful eras in franchise history. He is also the last active player from the 2008 World Series championship team to retire from Major League Baseball.

Hamels made the All-Star team three times in Philadelphia and helped them win that 2008 World Series. He 114-90 with the Phillies in his career and had six seasons of double-digit wins with the organization.

After Philadelphia, he spent parts of four seasons with the Texas Rangers, two seasons with the Chicago Cubs and one game with the Atlanta Braves (2020).

He attempted a comeback with the San Diego Padres but was unable to make it back to the big leagues.

The winter solstice in Australia is today. Here's why it's the shortest day of the year

Cold winter in Canberra 2015

Australia will have its "shortest day of the year" today when the southern hemisphere experiences the winter solstice.

But just how much daylight (or darkness) you'll get depends on where you are in the country.

Here's what you can expect.

What is Australia's 2024 winter solstice?

It's often called the shortest day of the year.

But, technically, it's the day with the least amount of daylight hours.

That's because it's when the southern hemisphere is at its furthest tilt away from the Sun, meaning we get less sunlight.

At the same time, the Northern Hemisphere will be experiencing the summer solstice – known as the longest day of the year.

A diagram illustrating the Earth's tilt.

When is the 2024 winter solstice in Australia?

For Australia, the winter solstice is today — Friday, June 21.

We often just think of a solstice as applying to the whole day (or night) but there is a specific period you can look out for.

According to timeanddate.com , the exact moment the southern hemisphere is at its furthest tilt from the Sun will be at:

  • 6.50am AEST
  • 6.20am ACST
  • 4.50am AWST

How long is the shortest day of the year?

That depends on where you are in Australia, because places closer to the equator get more daylight during winter than those further south.

Here's how many hours of daylight our capital cities will get:

  • Adelaide: 9 hours, 48 minutes and 18 seconds
  • Brisbane: 10 hours, 24 minutes and 12 seconds
  • Canberra: 9 hours, 46 minutes and 25 seconds
  • Darwin: 11 hours, 23 minutes and 45 seconds
  • Hobart: 9 hours and 50 seconds
  • Melbourne: 9 hours, 32 minutes and 27 seconds
  • Perth: 10 hours, 3 minutes and 22 seconds
  • Sydney: 9 hours, 53 minutes and 49 seconds

When do the days start getting longer?

After the winter solstice.

Each day will get a fraction more daylight than the previous until this year's summer solstice.

When is Australia's 2024 summer solstice?

This year it'll be on December 21.

Why are the days shorter in winter?

Illustration of Earth's seasons

Because of the Earth's tilt toward the Sun, which is 23.5 degrees.

That means when the southern hemisphere is facing the Sun more directly, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away.

This is why, when we experience summer here in Australia, the Northern Hemisphere experiences its winter.

During this time, we get fewer daylight hours and the light is spread over a greater surface area, meaning the days don't get as warm.

As for the days being longer in summer and shorter in winter, here's how science presenter Bernie Hobbs explained it :

"In summer, days are longer because more hours are spent facing the Sun. "And they're hotter because we're facing the Sun more head-on — so we get hit by more rays of sunlight than if we were on an angle."

What does the winter solstice symbolise?

You may hear some people describe this week's solstice as the start of winter (or summer, if they live in the Northern Hemisphere).

That's because some countries observe astronomical seasons, which means the beginning of each season aligns with the year's solstices and equinoxes.

An equinox is when the Sun passes directly over the equator.

Like solstices, there are two equinoxes each year.

But Australia officially observes meteorological seasons, which line up with the calendar months.

So that's why winter officially started on June 1 in Australia.

However, it's worth noting that, because Australia covers such a vast space, different parts of the country experience seasons differently.

Secret Service Agent Robbed at Gunpoint on Night of Biden’s L.A. Gala

The agent’s bag was stolen on Saturday night in a residential community in Southern California, the authorities said.

A United States Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint in Southern California over the weekend, on the same night that President Joe Biden was in Los Angeles for a re-election fund-raiser, the authorities said on Monday.

Police officers were called to a residential development in Orange County at about 9:36 p.m. on Saturday over reports of a possible robbery, the Tustin Police Department said in a statement .

Upon arriving at the development — a former military base — the police discovered that the victim was a Secret Service agent whose bag had been stolen at gunpoint, the statement said. During the robbery, an agent fired a gun, the police added.

The suspected robbery occurred on the same night that Mr. Biden was in downtown Los Angeles for a star-studded re-election fund-raiser with former President Barack Obama . Celebrities including George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Barbra Streisand attended the gala, which the Biden campaign said raised at least $28 million.

It was not immediately clear if the Secret Service agent was in California protecting Mr. Biden or Mr. Obama. The police statement did not identify the agent. The Tustin Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for clarification.

It was unclear how many suspects were involved or if they were injured during the shooting, the statement said, adding that no suspects had been found. The police were able to locate some of the agent’s belongings in the area.

The U.S. Secret Service did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Carmel teen Alex Shackell cruises to semis win, continues to shine at Olympic Trials

special assignment tonight

INDIANAPOLIS – One night after Regan Smith swam to a world record , a Carmel teenager was trying to chase her down.

Alex Shackell won a semifinal of the 200-meter butterfly in 2:06.10 Wednesday on night 5 of the U.S. Olympic Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium . She will head into Thursday night’s final as the second seed behind Smith.

Top two go to the Paris Olympics .

Shackell, 17, did break the national 17-18 record of 2:06.39 set by Smith in 2020. Shackell’s time advanced her to No. 7 on the U.S all-time list.

It would have been fast enough for a bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships and a gold at February’s worlds.

More on Alex Shackell: Olympic medal eluded father, but Carmel swimming siblings can get on Paris podium

In the 200 butterfly, Smith won a silver medal at the 2021 Olympics and bronze at the 2023 worlds.

Smith, on pace for an American record through 100 meters, won the first semifinal in 2:04.91 to set a national championships record. She set an American record of 2:03.87 last year. Emma Sticklen was second in 2:07.44.

Kelly Pash, also of Carmel, was 11 th overall in 2:09.96 and did not make top eight for finals.

Hours after Smith reclaimed the world record in the 100 backstroke, she was beaten in a heat of the 200 butterfly by Shackell. The Carmel teen clocked 2:06.71. Smith was second in 2:07.24.

Shackell’s previous best was 2:07.13 from March. She tentatively qualified for the Olympic team in the 4x200 freestyle relay by finishing sixth in the 200 free Monday night.

Carmel coach Chris Plumb has said Shackell’s focus for the trials had been the 200 butterfly.

In Saturday’s 100 butterfly, she twice lowered her best time, to 57.07 in the heats and 56.78 in semifinals. She was seeded fourth ahead of the final but scratched to concentrate on the 200 free. Top three in the 100 butterfly final were all under 56 seconds, affirming the scratch was an astute decision.

Shackell’s brother, Aaron, 19, made the team by winning the 400 free on Saturday’s night 1. The Shackells’ father, Nick, represented Great Britain at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.
