Frequently asked questions, what is business writing.

Business writing covers a wide range of types of documents and writing styles that are commonly used in a professional setting. In writing certificate programs, business writing is taught to show professionals how to communicate effectively with the rest of their organization. Without business writing courses, many new professionals would have a hard time explaining their strategies, goals, and intentions.

What is the purpose of improving your business writing?

The easiest way to demonstrate the value of improving your business writing is in how it can help advance your career. Say you were a manager or executive hiring for a big position in your company. Would you hire someone whose resume or email communications had multiple errors in grammar, usage, and spelling? Or would you hire someone who presents a professional image through exceptional writing and a proven track record of strong written communication skills? By improving your business writing, you ensure you're in a better position to communicate your goals, vision, and purpose.

What are the different document and style types of business writing?

Business requires writing for a wide range of document types, many of which are written very differently from one another. Imagine a business email that confirms the receipt of a document. It has a very different style from a business plan, website, or annual report. Even a grant proposal often requires specialized knowledge to present effectively.

By comparison, the writing style will be different based on the type of writing that you're doing. If you're writing a business website or sales content, you'd use persuasive language. A business plan will use an informational tone, and your business processes and procedures instruct the reader through a step-by-step process.

How is business writing different from academic writing?

Business writing is about improving the effectiveness of professional written communication. You want to create emails that have headlines that make people want to open them. You want to create proposals that will be approved. These require at least a touch of persuasive language. By comparison, most academic writing is informational, focused on specific facts and presenting a particular argument.

What will I learn in a business writing course?

Part of what you'll get out of online business writing courses will depend on the specific course you take. If you're interested in exploring CIO or CTO positions in the future, technical writing may appeal to you. This entails developing solid documentation and more fact-based informational or instructive writing. If your interest lies in marketing, courses covering social media and web writing may appeal to you. By focusing on persuasive writing styles, you could help convert readers into potential leads.

If you're looking at management, courses that focus on writing policies and procedures that use an instructional format to walk employees through these processes will provide you with the specialized writing style that you'll need. Similarly, taking an executive position that requires you to be able to author reports and proposals requires a specific mix of informational and persuasive writing that you'll want to master thoroughly before proceeding.

In these writing certificate courses, using proper grammar and being able to effectively proofread and edit documents is of vital importance to your future success.

Does the Business Writing Certificate include a Copywriting Course?

While the writing certificate program at the College of Continuing and Professional Studies doesn't include a specific copywriting course, our Writing for the Web and Writing for Social Media do cover the vast majority of projects that most copywriters encounter today. The certificate also provides solid experience in persuasive writing. The pieces you write in class may become part of your professional portfolio, giving you writing samples to demonstrate your expertise to potential employers.

What's more, your Business Writing Certificate includes a range of grammar, editing, and proofreading classes that give you the knowledge you need to work well with editors while producing low- or no-error writing in your initial drafts. This knowledge allows you to focus on what you need to write, rather than how it should be written, speeding up your production.

Effective Writing

Effective Writing for Business and the Professions is an eight-week course designed to meet the writing needs of working professionals. The course is an accelerated, non-credit version of the Writing Program’s Academic and Professional Writing course

Located in the heart of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center, Effective Writing is offered in both Autumn and Spring quarters on Wednesday evenings. Effective Writing is part of the continuing education writer resources administered through the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. For courses in grammar and business presentations, see the Graham School’s  Writer’s Studio.

Course Description

Effective Writing in Business and the Professions demonstrates the structures of clear professional prose. You will learn not only how to diagnose and fix trouble spots that can make writing unclear, but also how to refocus a text to reach different audiences, such as colleagues, clients, or the general public. How can you tailor your work to particular readers while working quickly enough to be effective? Our course tackles this problem by using a “reader based” approach to writing: you will learn to predict how readers will respond to language when it is structured in particular ways. Before your readers can process the information you wish to communicate, they need to see certain predictable kinds of sentence structures, paragraph structures, and text structures.

The course includes lecture sessions and small-group seminars in which instructors can focus on each student’s writing needs. In the lecture sessions, we’ll examine real-world professional prose taken from a wide variety of fields, and discuss why the good ones work and why the bad ones — and some of them are very bad indeed — don’t work at all. The principles of clear writing that you study, then, won’t be presented as a list of abstract rules; instead, they will be developed from the class’s experience of good and bad writing. In the seminar groups, which are led by members of the Writing Program staff, you’ll exchange copies of your writing samples with other students and discuss these samples as a group. This kind of a seminar can give you a very clear idea of how a group of diverse readers responds to your work. We’ll also do some exercises that will help you incorporate the courses’ principles into your daily writing habits.

How to Register

To register, visit the the Graham School Writer’s Studio . You may also call the Graham School directly at (773) 702-1722. Effective Writing cannot be taken for course credit. However, for students who attend regularly and participate in group discussions, we are happy to provide a Certificate of Participation.

It doesn't matter whether you're a clerical worker, an engineer, or an executive. If you communicate with others in writing, you need this course to help you identify and eliminate problem areas. By the end of this course, you'll know the secret to developing powerful written documents that immediately draw readers in and keep them motivated to continue until your very last, well-chosen word.

-Self-Guided

Self-Guided courses are designed for completely independent learning, without instructor moderation. Students interact in the class discussion area. Students have access to the course for 3 months. After enrolling, you will receive all lessons immediately and have three months access to complete the course content. Self-Guided courses do not have extensions.

-3 Months Access

-Start within 3 business days of registration.  You will receive an email from our Educational Partner, Ed2Go with log in details.

Lesson 1 - Writing as Problem Solving

In this first lesson, you'll learn a brainstorming technique that will help make writing easier and more fun for you right away. You'll learn how to disentangle the efforts of your creative and critical sides, and you'll come to understand why both sides are important components of good writing. You'll also learn why writing is one of the best problem-solving tools around.

Lesson 2 - Why Write and Who Is Your Reader?

Here's where you'll learn a helpful system for organizing your writing, whether it's an email, a formal letter, or a company-wide memo. you'll start by picking out a document that you have to write anyway so that you can put your new writing knowledge to use right away. you may as well get some work done while you're learning, right next, you'll nail down why you're writing this particular document and who your reader is. a second brainstorming technique will help you have fun thinking through these two questions..

Lesson 3 - Benefits You Can Offer Your Reader

In this lesson, you'll learn to make your readers do what you want. Your readers will be happy, too, since they'll get what they want in this win/win system. You'll learn the seven basic benefits you can offer your reader and how to write the crucial first sentence of your document. You'll learn one more brainstorming technique that will help you capture good ideas, words, and phrases.

Lesson 4 - Sequencing Your Ideas and How to Write Your Ending

Master seven strategies for putting your ideas in order and learn how poor sequencing can sabotage your efforts. You'll also discover the best way to end any document. It's an idea that may surprise you!

Lesson 5 - Revising, Formatting, Editing, and Proofreading

Revising, formatting, editing, and proofreading may all sound similar, but they're four distinct activities. In this lesson, you'll learn how revision is a process of exploration and discovery. You'll learn formatting strategies that will invite your reader in. You'll also learn to be a ruthless editor and professional proofreader.

Lesson 6 - What Words to Take Out

In this lesson, you'll learn how to write clearly and concisely. You'll explore three mistaken notions that lead business writers to use lots of convoluted phrasing and needlessly long words. You'll examine the pitfalls of using business clichés, jammed modifiers, trendy words, jargon, foreign words, redundancies, and hedging adjectives.

Lesson 7 - What Words to Put In

In the last lesson you learned what words to remove from your document. In this lesson, you'll learn what words you should include to make your business writing more compelling. You'll learn the four parts of the written communication process. You'll find out why the verbs and nouns you choose make a major difference. You'll also learn more ways to make the task of writing more enjoyable for you.

Lesson 8 - Strategies for Good Spelling and Punctuation

In this lesson, you'll look at strategies for good spelling and punctuation. Everyone needs this review! To keep it fun, you'll get to deal with the topics of spelling and punctuation by taking some easy quizzes. It's a chance to learn by doing. See how good your spelling and punctuation skills really are. You'll learn that punctuation is not a tyranny of rules, but an evolving protocol to help you communicate. Finally, you'll capture your weak areas on a Tips Card.

Lesson 9 - One Easy Grammar Lesson

Why do you have to bother with grammar? You'll find out why in this lesson. Take the Grammar Blitz Quiz to discover your grammar strengths and weaknesses. It will help you fill in the gaps that remain after years of boring grammar classes. You'll learn why using the active instead of the passive voice can be a demonstration of your integrity. You'll also explore the traps pronouns set for those who are sensitive to gender issues.

Lesson 10 - Getting the Tone Right

Getting the tone right in business writing can be tricky, especially in email. In this lesson, you'll get to tackle your worst moods with one more brainstorming technique. You'll learn how to defuse any negative emotions that might get in the way of your problem solving. You'll also learn how your attitude toward your reader, your topic, and your own needs determines your tone. As you go through the lesson, you'll learn two easy ways to eliminate unintentional tone mistakes.

Lesson 11 - When You Have to Say No

In this lesson, you'll learn why being able to say "no" with grace is a crucial business skill. A five-part format will give you a solid strategy for writing documents that say "no" while retaining the goodwill of your reader. You'll learn how to keep bad news letters, memos, and emails positive and helpful.

Lesson 12 - Email Etiquette

This lesson will provide an up-to-date review of all the ways that email is different from other kinds of business writing. It will teach you how to write emails that get the job done quickly and efficiently and explain their legal status in court. You'll also discover how to manage the tone of your emails so that you don't accidentally offend your reader.

The Science of Strong Business Writing

  • Bill Birchard

continuing education business writing courses

Lessons from neurobiology

Brain scans are showing us in new detail exactly what entices readers. Scientists can see a group of midbrain neurons—the “reward circuit”—light up as people respond to everything from a simple metaphor to an unexpected story twist. The big takeaway? Whether you’re crafting an email to a colleague or an important report for the board, you can write in a way that delights readers on a primal level, releasing pleasure chemicals in their brains.

Bill Birchard is an author and writing coach who’s worked with many successful businesspeople. He’s drawn on that experience and his review of the scientific literature to identify eight features of satisfying writing: simplicity, specificity, surprise, stirring language, seductiveness, smart ideas, social content, and storytelling. In this article, he shares tips for using those eight S’s to captivate readers and help your message stick.

Strong writing skills are essential for anyone in business. You need them to effectively communicate with colleagues, employees, and bosses and to sell any ideas, products, or services you’re offering.

continuing education business writing courses

Case Western Reserve University

The English Department and Writing Program offer a number of courses that support writers' development in a variety of genres and contexts. For First-Year students, we offer Academic English & Academic Inquiry seminars. For all undergraduates, we offer a variety of Communication Intensive  and other courses in areas such as:

  • rhetoric & writing studies
  • language & linguistics
  • professional/technical communication
  • literature, film & media studies
  • creative writing & journalism

Each semester, the English department publishes detailed course descriptions , which include additional information about the courses being offered. For a complete set of department courses, please consult the General Bulletin or the Student Information System (SIS) , using course codes ENGL (English), WRIT (Writing & Rhetoric), AIAE (Academic English), and/or AIQS (Academic Inquiry).

For personalized writing support,  ENGL 180: Writing Tutorial (1 credit) is a weekly tutorial with a consultant from the Writing Resource Center that is designed to meet the specific writing goals of each student.

Sample courses from our literature, professional/technical communication, non-native speaker, language and linguistics, and creative writing offerings are described below. Many of these courses also count as Communication Intensive (CI) courses in the CWRU  Unified General Education Requirements (UGER) . In addition to the courses described below, we offer topical seminars  that highlight the diverse scholarly interests of our students and faculty.

Sample Literature Courses

  • ENGL 200: Literature in English (CI) -  This course introduces students to the reading of literature in the English language. Through close attention to the practice of reading, students are invited to consider some of the characteristic forms and functions imaginative literature has taken, together with some of the changes that have taken place in what and how readers read.
  • ENGL 257A: Reading Fiction (CI) -  This course introduces students to prose narrative forms in English by exploring their intersecting histories and their contemporary developments. We will introduce and develop the key terms, concepts and practice of literary studies. The specific focus of the course may vary. Recommended preparation: Academic Inquiry Seminar or SAGES First Seminar.
  • ENGL 257B: Reading Poetry (CI) -  This course will help you to read and enjoy poetry by introducing you to the history of poetic forms in English. We will introduce and develop the key terms, concepts and practice of literary studies by turning to poems for our test-cases; examples may include the sestina, sonnet and villanelle, ghazal, pantoum, haiku, and open forms. The specific focus of the course may vary. Recommended preparation: Academic Inquiry Seminar or SAGES First Seminar.

Sample Professional & Technical Writing Courses

  • ENGL 217A: Business & Professional Writing (CI) -  An introduction to professional communication in theory and practice. Special attention paid to audience analysis, persuasive techniques in written and oral communication, document design strategies, and ethical communication practices.
  • English 217B: Writing for the Health Professions (CI) -  This course offers practice and training in the professional and technical writing skills common to health professions (e.g., medicine, nursing, dentistry). Attention will be paid to the writing processes of drafting, revising, and editing. Typical assignments include: letters, resumes, personal essays, professional communication genres (e.g., email, reports, patient charts, and histories), and scholarly genres (e.g., abstracts, articles, and reviews).

Sample Courses Designed for Non-Native Speakers of English

  • ENGL 146: Tools, Not Rules: English Grammar for Writers -  This course provides an introduction to English grammar in context for academic writers. It focuses on the study of language in use, including parts of speech, sentence grammar, paragraph structure, and text cohesion.
  • ENGL 147: Writing Across Disciplines (CI) -  In this course, students will develop their genre knowledge and metacognitive skills to prepare for the advanced writing, reading, and research tasks required in upper-level writing and disciplinary courses across the university. Through individual and group inquiry, students will analyze and discuss the conventions of academic genres to understand the textual and linguistic features and disciplinary expectations of each form of writing. Then, students will apply these generic conventions through the production and revision of writing within each genre. Throughout the semester, students will engage in workshops and discussions that foster skills in the areas of seminar participation, collaboration, rhetorical awareness, and critical thinking.

Sample Rhetoric, Language & Linguistics Courses

  • ENGL 255: Rhetoric and the Art of Public Speaking (CI) - This course uses the lens of classical rhetoric to explore contemporary political debate. While the word "rhetoric" is often used today to deride precisely what's wrong with political discourse, it more properly denotes the techniques of effective persuasion. By learning how rhetorical devices are used, we can empower ourselves to analyze policy debates and to make our own contributions.
  • ENGL 301: Linguistic Analysis -  Analysis of modern English from various theoretical perspectives: structural, generative, discourse analytical, sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, and cognitive linguistic. Some attention to the major dialects of American English.
  • ENGL 310: History of the English Language -  An introductory course covering the major periods of English language development: Old, Middle, and Modern. Students will examine both the linguistic forms and the cultures in which the forms were used.

Sample Creative Writing Courses

  • ENGL 203: Introduction to Creative Writing -  A course exploring basic issues and techniques of writing narrative prose and verse through exercises, analysis, and experiment. For students who wish to try their abilities across a spectrum of genres.
  • ENGL 213: Introduction to Fiction Writing -  A beginning workshop in fiction writing, introducing such concepts as voice, point of view, plot, characterization, dialogue, description, and the like. May include discussion of literary examples, both classic and contemporary, along with student work.
  • ENGL 214: Introduction to Poetry Writing - A beginning workshop, focusing on such elements of poetry as verse-form, syntax, figures, sound, tone. May include discussion of literary examples as well as student work.

  • Develop and integrate a core set of business skills necessary to successfully operate a hospitality and tourism organization.
  • Demonstrate competence in the communication skills necessary for hospitality and tourism management.
  • Formulate business decisions in hospitality and tourism management.
  • Evaluate leadership principles necessary in the diverse and global hospitality and tourism industry.

With a Bachelor of Science in hospitality, tourism and event management from South Dakota State University, the hospitality, tourism and event industry is yours to conquer. We are dedicated to making the hospitality, tourism and event management program at SDSU one of the leading professional management-related programs in the Midwest.

Since Winter of 2016, the hospitality, tourism and event management program has held professional accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA) for its educational quality and for upholding nationally recognized standards in the hospitality profession.

The hospitality, tourism and event management program had a 50% retention rate for the 2020-2021 academic year, and 75% of our students were employed in the hospitality industry or a related field upon graduation and 25% of our students were continuing their education. In the academic years of 2019-2020, 2018-2019 and 2017-18, retention rates were 100%, 71.4% and 57.1% respectively. While the hospitality industry continued to have jobs available in the hospitality field for any student searching, students in hospitality, tourism and event management learn numerous transferrable skills and are sought-after for, and excel in, positions in a wide variety of industries. Given that, 94.12% and 88% of our students were employed in the hospitality industry or related field in 2019-2020 and 2018-2019 respectively. In 2017-18, 13.33% of our students were continuing their education and 66.67% were employed in the hospitality industry or a related field.

Program Overview

This specialized business degree prepares you for leadership roles in the dynamic, service-oriented hospitality industry. Traditional business courses in accounting, economics and law are complemented by hospitality marketing, meeting/event management, lodging management, hospitality facilities management, food and beverage management and international tourism. All of these courses help to give you a solid foundation required for any number of hospitality specialties.

Some of the many areas you can focus your career within hospitality management:

  • Bar and beverage management
  • Casino management
  • Club management
  • Cruise management
  • Event management
  • Hotel management
  • Resort management
  • Restaurant management
  • Tourism management
  • Venue management
  • Sport coordinator
  • Healthcare hospitality

We stress experiential learning in our program. If you plan to successfully lead, manage or direct others in the industry you must have industry experience. Our goal is for each of our graduates to be qualified for an intro-level management job (or management training position) upon graduation. As former managers in the hospitality industry we realize that gaining industry experience is an important part of our degree requirement.

All undergraduates must complete two internships, accumulating more than 500 hours of work experience in two distinct areas of hospitality. These two experiences provide a great opportunity to explore different and unique facets of the industry, and to expand your knowledge and discover your ideal career path. Whether on campus or off campus, part time or full time, job or internship, you can choose the work experience that best suits your schedule and interests.

With this degree in hand, you'll have a wealth of career options both in South Dakota and throughout the United States and will be well-prepared for post-graduate studies if you choose to continue your education. Additionally, our faculty brings significant industry experience to the classroom, adding a unique dimension that you just won't find with a general business education.

Special Events

Throughout the fall/spring, students participate in learning experiences with the hospitality club and in their courses. Some of the upcoming experiences that students will be participating in:

  • Hospitality Management Career Fair
  • South Dakota Governor’s Conference on Tourism
  • Prostart Competition

Policy and Procedures Tools describe the necessary policies and procedures required for successful implementation of the initiative, program or intervention. They are a set of documents that describe an organization's policies/rules for operation and the procedures necessary to fulfill those policies.

  • Compliance — Well-defined and documented processes (i.e., procedures, training materials) along with records that demonstrate process capability can demonstrate an effective internal control system compliant with regulations and standards.

An Overview of the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.
