• Avoid clichés:   “Determined team player who always gives 110%” might seem like a good way to fill up your CV profile, but generic phrases like this won’t land you an interview. Recruiters hear them time and time again and have no real reason to believe them. Instead, pack your profile with your hard skills and tangible achievements instead.
• Length:  Aim for a short, snappy paragraph of 3-5 lines. This is just enough room to showcase why you’d make the perfect hire, without going into excessive detail and overwhelming busy recruiters.
• Relevancy:  Before writing your CV, make sure to do some research. Figure out exactly what your desired employers are looking for and make sure that you are making those requirements prominent in your CV profile, and throughout your application.
• Avoid objectives:  Career goals and objectives are best suited to your cover letter, so don’t waste space with them in your CV profile.

What to include in your HGV driver CV profile?

• Summary of your experience – Provide a punchy summary of your HGV driver experience so far, including the number of years of experience you have, the type of work you’ve carried out and who you’ve worked for. If this will be your first HGV driver role, mention your other professional experience, but try to draw upon any transferable skills you’ve gained, such as organisation, time management and communication.

As HGV driver jobs might receive a huge pile of applications, this is a great way to stand out and show off your suitability for the role.

Key responsibilities

Follow with a snappy list of bullet points, detailing your daily duties and responsibilities.

Tailor it to the role you’re applying for by mentioning how you put the target employer’s desired hard skills and knowledge to use in this role.

• Completing and delivering all the necessary paperwork.
• Troubleshooting vehicle problems and making repairs on the road.
• Maintaining logbooks and other records in line with safety regulations.

Key achievements

Finish off by showcasing 1-3 key achievements made within the role.

This could be anything that had a positive effect on your company, clients or customers, such as saving time or money, receiving exemplary feedback or an award or increasing revenue.

• Increased efficiency by delivering ahead of schedule on 95% of jobs.
• Achieved 100% client satisfaction rate over a 12-month period.
• Identified a serious vehicle fault which prevented the possibility of a major accident.

In your education section, make any HGV licenses, qualifications or relevant training (such as Manual Handling, Mechanics or  First Aid ) a focal point.

Make sure to mention the name of the organisation, qualification titles, dates of study and grade (if applicable).

Additionally, if you have room, you can provide a brief overview of your academic background, such as A-Levels and GCSEs.

Interests and hobbies

This is an optional section that should only be used if your hobbies and interests will add further depth to your CV.

Avoid generic hobbies such as  ‘listening to music’ or ‘going out with friends’  and instead reflect on interests that show valuable skills.

For example, being part of a sports team shows great teamwork and communication qualities, while car restoration shows you’ve got mechanical skills, which are great for a HGV career.

Essential skills for your HGV driver CV

Each company will require a slightly different skillset, so make sure to read over the job ad. However, most companies will expect the following key skills from a HGV driver:

Driving  – Holding the appropriate licenses and being able to drive a range of vehicles on time and safely.

Route knowledge  – Of course you’ll have a sat nav, but an understanding of the area is helpful for avoiding traffic or re-routing due to road congestion.

Vehicle safety & basic mechanics  – Ability to undertake minor vehicle checks, repairs and maintenance before, during or after trips.

Customer service – Most roles will require you to communicate with clients and customers, so a polite, friendly and professional manner is essential.

Manual handling  – Knowing how to pack and upload your vehicle safely.

When people remember our names, it makes us feel good. And that’s not just common knowledge – it’s actually been scientifically proven . Using the hiring manager’s name in your cover letter greeting is one of the best ways to show that you’re invested in the position. 

For smaller companies, this information is often online or easily attainable with a quick call to the company office.

However, in larger organizations it may be nearly impossible to know exactly who will be reading your application – and often, it’s a team of people. 

In that case, it’s best to avoid the generic “To Whom It May Concern.” Instead, opt for the company name followed by a more personable, collective noun like “Team” or even “Family” if it’s appropriate for the brand. 

Hiring managers are busy people, and each driving position can have dozens of applicants. That’s why your introduction is one of the most essential pieces of a professional cover letter. This is your chance to grab the employer’s attention and encourage them to keep reading into the body of your letter.

In the first, try using the STAR method to quickly describe a Situation, the required Task, your Action and the positive Result it caused. Make sure to choose the most relevant examples for the position you’re applying to so that the employer can imagine your benefit to the company.

In the second section, you can discuss your track record, most pertinent skills and potential contributions you could make to the new position. Make sure to use an enthusiastic, yet respectful tone to avoid coming across as demanding or entitled.

The goal of this section: Detail your accomplishments and milestones, give a taste of your relevant skills and how you would apply them in this new position

Now it’s time to close out your letter in a polite way that encourages the hiring manager to get in touch. A Call to Action sentence accomplishes just this by expressing your interest in the position and inviting the employer to contact you. You may even choose to leave your phone number and email address here, space permitting.

Then, finish the letter with the appropriate sign-off. “Best regards,” “Sincerely,” or even the less formal “Thank you” can work well.

The goal of this section: Create an effective Call to Action that prompts a hiring manager to get in touch, choose the appropriate closing to end the letter respectfully.

This guidance will help you understand and comply with a few important rules and regulations around driver conduct and licensing in the haulage industry. It provides links to sources of more detailed information.

As a lorry driver, you should follow employer and government guidance to ensure the safety of yourself, your passengers, other road users and pedestrians.

1. Driver conduct

Driver conduct refers to vocational drivers’ behaviour and actions.

You should be aware of the role of the Traffic Commissioners. Their responsibilities include:

• considering the conduct of LGV licence holders and licence applicants to hold the entitlement
• suspending or revoking vocational drivers’ licences where appropriate

As a LGV driver, your conduct should be appropriate both at work and at other times.

Drink driving, drug driving speeding and hand-held mobile phone use pose particular risks to road safety. Traffic Commissioners can suspend or revoke a driver’s entitlement, and also disqualify, if they have been reported for these offences. You should tell your employer immediately if you are found guilty of any new motoring offence. Operators have a duty to report all motoring offences committed in any vehicle to the Traffic Commissioner.

Remember: just one offence and you could lose your entitlement to drive a lorry.

2. Driver CPC card

You must always carry your Driver Qualification Card (for the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) when driving a lorry.

You must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years towards your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence to drive a lorry. Further information about this is available online.

You must carry your driver qualification card if you have been issued with one.

3. Driver tachograph card

You must also carry your digital driver card if you have been issued with one, even if you are driving a vehicle with an analogue tachograph.

If your work is covered by EU Drivers’ Hours regulations and your vehicle is equipped with a digital tachograph , you have to use a driver card by law. If a vehicle fitted with a digital tachograph is being used on work covered by British Domestic Regulations, it must be set to ‘out of scope’ unless it is being used as an alternative to keeping records in a drivers log book.

4. Driver licensing and medical conditions

If you have a restricted licence due to medical conditions or you drive abroad, you should apply to renew your driving licence entitlement as soon as possible, generally 60 days before it expires. This will ensure that DVLA has enough time to investigate any medical conditions.

You should be aware that when you renew your vocational entitlement on your licence, the entitlement is valid from the date it is issued by DVLA. This might not correspond with the expiry date of the previous entitlement.

It is your responsibility to know when your driving licence, driver card and CPC card expires.

You can check what vehicles you can drive, how many penalty points you have, and when your current licence expires at any time using DVLA’s View Driving Licence service. You will need your driving licence number and National Insurance number to use it. This is a free service.

You must tell DVLA and your employer about a notifiable medical condition. Most drivers who tell DVLA about a medical condition still keep their entitlement.

Those who don’t tell DVLA are committing an offence and might be a danger to other road users and pedestrians.

Find out more about notifiable conditions or ask your GP whether an existing or new condition could affect your ability to drive safely.

If you have told DVLA about a medical condition, you should maintain close contact with your GP to ensure that any request for information from DVLA is handled promptly.

Application forms are available online or you can pick them up from your nearest Post Office® that deals with driving licence applications.

LGV drivers should carry out daily checks to maintain safety standards for their vehicles.

Personal Profile

In the personal profile, you should professionally introduce yourself, in three or four sentences, with relation to the job you’re applying to. Include: your current work situation, what type of work you are searching for (such as part-time, flexible hours, or full-time employment starting immediately) some key skills and/or traits that will show the potential employer that you are a good candidate for the advertised job.

If you are a fully qualified LGV Driver with several years experience and have a good knowledge of major highways, mention this here. 

If you don’t have your lorry driving licence, that’s okay. Just write that you are looking for your first role that will provide you with training. You could highlight that you have a car driving licence in this section too.

Work History

The work history section is to show the potential employer what jobs or work experience you’ve done.  You don’t need to include every last detail about your duties or achievements for each job. Include only skills and duties that are relevant to the job you're applying for, as you want to show that you are a good fit for the job. If you find you have lots to write about, you can always write down and save your examples or other relevant skills for the interview.

What jobs should you include?

• Try to include your work history for the last five years. If you haven’t been working for that long, that is okay. It will be explained by the education history. • If you’re applying for your first role in this sector, it’s still important to include your work history. Use it to highlight relevant skills that the employer is looking for, such as organisation, team work and good communication.
• Include details of any jobs that have involved driving, even if it’s a small van or a car – this still shows you are responsible and a driver than a potential employer can trust.

Education History

In education history, this is a chance to show any relevant training you have done, what skills you have learned from your courses, as well as general education subjects you’ve done. As you get more work experience, this section will become shorter, as your work history becomes more relevant and more recent.

To be an LGV Driver you need to have the correct licences. There are 4 types of licences;

• Explain briefly the training certificate relevant to the job you are applying to. What did you learn that is relevant to the job?
• Covered hazard perception, record keeping, safe loading of goods, road safety and laws, fuel efficiency, risk assessments, incident reporting, and practical lorry driving

If you have completed courses or gained certificates such as first aid, include that information here, as well as details of your car driving licence.

Misleading information on your CV is likely to trip you up in an interview and is unprofessional; you don’t have to show you have every last skill listed in the job advert to be successful.

Who should you include as a reference?

• Your first reference should ideally be from your current or most recent manager. The second reference can be from a current colleague, or line manager or supervisor from a previous job. It’s best practice to ask someone if they will be a reference for you before they are contacted. Be aware that not all employers actually contact references, but it’s important to have them available if needed.
• It’s important to remember that while you are in your current job, consider that you may not want your reference (eg. your current head chef/boss) to be contacted until you have had an interview for a new possible job, or are actually offered it. This is because, for instance, if you weren’t offered the new job, and end up staying in your current job then you might not want your manager having been contacted as a reference. It can cause tension or awkward conversations about why you were trying to leave. A good way to get around this is to simply write ‘References available on request’. This shows the new employer that they can ask you for them as needed, but also means you can ask them to only contact them if you are offered the job, and then have time to ask the reference if it’s okay for them to be contacted. Most potential employers will be happy to wait to do this after offering you the job.
• If you have only had one previous job, or have been studying, it is okay to include a tutor as a reference, or someone else as a character reference (who is not related to you).
