Essay About The Impact of Indecent Dressing on Society

The implications of indecent dressing.

One of the most significant impacts of indecent dressing is the devaluation of women. When women dress indecently, it tends to objectify them, reducing them to mere objects of sexual desire rather than respected individuals with their own identities and capabilities.

Another consequence is the negative perception it creates. People who dress indecently are often perceived negatively, seen as individuals with low moral standards and a lack of self-respect. This perception may even translate into their personal and professional lives, affecting opportunities and relationships.

Indecent Dressing impacts essay

Indecent dressing can cause social dislocation, creating a divide between those who comply with societal norms and those who do not. This division can lead to social unrest and discrimination. In places such as work or school, indecent dressing can be a distraction, impeding focus and productivity. It may shift the attention away from the task at hand, resulting in a decline in performance.

Finally, indecent dressing is often seen as a violation of cultural norms. Most cultures have distinct dress codes reflective of their values and beliefs, and flouting these codes can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings.

The Road to Solutions

Addressing the issue of indecent dressing requires a multi-pronged approach. Education is the cornerstone; individuals need to be taught about the appropriate ways to dress for different settings and the implications of not doing so.

The implementation of dress codes in schools, workplaces, and other public places can ensure everyone dresses appropriately. These codes should be fair and considerate, taking into account cultural diversity and personal comfort.

Looking up to role models can significantly influence people’s dressing choices. Celebrities, leaders, and influential figures who dress decently can inspire others to do the same.

Lastly, enforcement of laws and regulations can deter people from dressing indecently. However, such measures should be applied with sensitivity, ensuring they do not infringe on personal freedom and rights.

In conclusion, the issue of indecent dressing extends beyond the surface, impacting societal values, personal dignity, and cultural harmony. Addressing it requires collective effort, understanding, and respect for societal norms and individual differences. By doing so, we can foster a society that respects diversity and upholds human dignity.

Expository Essay on Consequences of Dressing Indecently

Indecent dressing, also known as improper dress, was not uncommon in Africa. Still, today, it is increasingly becoming part of us and, simultaneously, leading to an increase in the level of immorality in our society. This practice, also known as a dress to kill, is most common in academic colleges, polytechnics, and university students, especially women.

They dress this way, all to look attractive, attractive, and attractive instead of the proper attire. Casual dresses, shorts, short blouses, miniskirts/gowns, torn shirts, loose-fitting trousers for boys and girls are significant issues associated with the dignity of dress today. As if this evil act was not enough, some students wore plain clothes, thus exposing their bodies that should not be seen in public. These dress patterns are very numerous and will still appear due to the advancement of fashion.

However, I sometimes wonder why they wear these outfits and find that it may result from what they see in the media, poor parenting / moral upbringing, peer pressure, and a sense of belonging. Of people. They do not remember that in every action, there is a reaction. This provocative act can lead to rape. Because of what they wear, they may be tempted by their peers to commit adultery.

They may also be tempted to join a cult or another. Also, a young woman dressed immodestly may look like a prostitute even though she may not be a prostitute. This gave him a terrible image. I firmly believe that improper dress can degrade a woman because it exposes what constitutes her wealth. For men, it gives them this image of irresponsibility.

To some extent, immodest dress in the church may portray a clergyman as weak and spiritually dead. What amazes me is that some of these clothes bring discomfort. For example, a woman wearing a miniskirt will not have much freedom to sit comfortably or get into a car or motorcycle.

To put an end to this misconduct, in 2008, the former Chairperson of the Senate Women and Youth Committee, Senator Eme Ufot Ekaete, introduced a dress code bill entitled, “Law on Prohibition and Punishment.

Public Nudity, Sexual Harassment, and Related Offenses.” Anita Kyaagba, a graduate student who responded to the bill, said: “We live in a world where we are free to do whatever we want. Besides, since you don’t buy me clothes, who will tell me what to wear? “I follow fashion, I wear the best, and if it highlights certain parts of my body and my boyfriend loves it, I don’t see anything wrong with it.” Adefunke Olutoye, another student who spoke to Leadership Sunday, said he stopped going to church where he grew up because the pastor stopped him from going to church because of the clothes he was wearing. According to him, “I was wearing a mini gown, which featured hips and Boers, and an old usher refused to let me go to church. From then on, I decided to join another church that would not judge me based on my dress but my heart. After all, the Lord sees the heart, not the body, so why should anyone judge”? You can see from this that although some people try to stop this terrible deed, others still want to stay in it.

However, this can be significantly reduced if we do what is correct at the right time. Therefore, strict enforcement of dress codes should be introduced in educational colleges, polytechnics, and universities to eliminate improper dress.

This can be achieved through the concerted efforts of the department of security, personnel, and the administration of higher education institutions. Also, to support such efforts, parents must teach their children to dress modestly and parents to dress modestly, as this will set an example for their children. According to the Holy Bible, at 1 Timothy chapter 2, verses 9 to 10 (New King James Version), it says: “Even so must their women also be grave, not arrayed in gold, expensive clothes, but suitable for women who profess to fear God and do good works.” From this verse of the Bible, it is clear that God wants us to dress modestly.

The media, as a social media agent, should promote good morals. Therefore, immodestly portrayed people on television through music videos, commercials, and films should be encouraged. Religious leaders should also preach against such an act. Finally, students should be taught the consequences of improper dress.

In conclusion, your image sometimes saves you from being protected from bad people and false accusations. Still, if it is the other way around, no matter what you do to show that you have changed, people will never believe you because, at first, you give them a wrong impression of who you are. Therefore, I advise my classmates to avoid dirty clothes to look responsible and at the same time prevent the consequences. Our destiny is in our hands.

Chapter One

Indecent appearance has come to characterize the dress pattern of many students on the campuses of higher learning in Nigeria. There is hardly any higher institution of learning in this country that is not faced with this nauseating problem. The way students on these campuses of learning particularly, the female ones, dress seductively leaves much to be desired. What the girls call skirts that they wear is just “one inch” longer than their pants. When they put on such dresses, they struggle to sit down, find difficulty in climbing machines, cross gutters as well as pick anything from the ground. Apart from the skimpy and tight fitting nature of these dresses, they are again transparent; revealing certain parts of the bodies that under normal dressing patterns ought to be hidden away from the glare of people. In the case of boys, their pattern of dress is different. It makes them to look so dirty and very unattractive with unkempt hairs and dirty jeans having pockets of holes deliberately created around the knees and the lower part of the trousers allowed to flow on the ground because they go through their heals into their legs as socks. The waist of their trousers are lowered and fastened tightly at the middle of the two bottom lobes to reveal their boxers (pants). And when they are walking, they drag their legs and one of their hands particularly, the left one, cupping their invisible scrotum as if they will fall to the ground if not supported. Many of them because of how they dressed had at one time or the other become victims of rape, lured into prostitution, used for ritual purpose, unable to complete their education or training and also engaged in other ancillary social and moral problems like cultism and lying to mention these few. Although, there are no universally acceptable way or ways of dressing, dresses are meant to serve some definable purposes, country or region notwithstanding. They are part of a peoples’ culture and they define their tribal or ethnic identity. Apart from dresses being a means for cultural identity, they are for ornamental or aesthetic purposes, for protection of the body against harsh weather conditions as well as for covering the intimate parts of the body (Answer.com, 2011; &Articlesbase.com, 2011). These purposes are important especially as they form major aspects of a person’s personality. But as important as these purposes are, they have been defeated by the generation of Nigerian youths (Articlesbase.com, 2011). Their dress patterns are most times anti-African, and are invented. They usually dress in a manner that does not show that they are responsible (nigerianfilms.com, 2009). The African culture and particularly that of Nigeria encourage modesty in appearance as do the Christian and Islamic religions where the larger population of these youths claim to be worshipping God.

The Dress Code on campuses is simply a law passed by the authorities of some universities and other tertiary institutions in order to ensure that students dress properly and decently. The Dress code, which has been passed in many institutions, notably the University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology, Minna, University of Abuja among others, prohibits certain types of dressing considered to be indecent for the students on campus. It goes further to specify specific uniform dress for students in some professional courses such as Law and Accounting among others.

Furthermore, in order to ensure compliance to the dress code law, the school authorities have empowered the school security personnel to turn back any student not properly dressed from the school premises. This was operational at the University of Abuja where students were checked at the main gate before being allowed to go in. Apart from the security, lecturers have also been empowered to send out student from lecture halls, students who do not comply with the dress code.

This UN-African dress pattern among the youths of this generation has generated lots of concern and worry among the citizenry of the country. Religious institutions as well as institutions of learning are not resting on their oars to watch this immoral act being perpetuated, but they speak against it. For instance, Olori (2003) reported that at the College of Education, Ekiadolor, Edo state rules were made that any dress won must cover intimate parts of the body, must not expose the breast, stomach, navel and bare chest.

It is increasingly becoming obvious that indecent dressing has gradually taken over the dress pattern of students in higher institutions of learning in Nigeria, and College of Education, Ekiadolor, Edo state is no exception. It has become like an epidemic spreading so fast and the earlier something is done about it, the better for the future of our desperate and vulnerable youth. Furthermore, celebrity dresses and accessories are typically imported and sold in high-end stores or boutiques at exorbitant prices which contributes to indecent dressing. Students who are still financially dependent on their parents unnecessarily limit themselves to purchasing such clothing, and at this point their purchasing behavior becomes more impulsive and credit-based, which is detrimental to their academic needs. Most of these clothing is not easily obtained or seen in markets, so students must go the extra mile by ordering online for a specific design or style. Others who want but are unable to order go in search of the cheapest lookalikes in order to have some form of identity with celebrities, even if it is beyond their means. The overwhelming aspect is that most students are so preoccupied with beauty and fashion that they hardly focus on their studies; most of the time, they are so preoccupied with what is trending and social activities in institutions that they neglect their academics.

One is not however surprised because what is typical of most Nigerian administrators is always a wide gap between policy formulation and execution. Indecent dressing even though is not accepted as the normality, is seen to be gaining ascendancy. One then wonders what becomes of the society tomorrow with the caliber of students that are being trained. If rules are made for people, they are supposed to be adequately informed why such rules are made. It is for this very reason and against this background that the problem of the study is to investigate the causes and implication of indecent dressing among undergraduate students in Nigeria as well as suggests solutions that could remedy the further spread of this immoral act on campuses of learning in Nigeria.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to examine the causes and implication of indecent dressing among undergraduate students in Nigeria.

Specifically, the study sought to:

  • Determine the possible causes of indecent dressing among undergraduate students in Nigeria.
  • Find out the forms of indecent dressing among undergraduate students in Nigeria.
  • Ascertain if indecent dressing has any significant impact on the academic performance of undergraduates students in Nigeria.
  • Proffer possible solutions to the issue of indecent dressing among undergraduate students in Nigeria.

These research questions will be answered in this study:

  • What are the possible causes of indecent dressing among undergraduate students in Nigeria?
  • What are the forms of indecent dressing among undergraduate students in Nigeria?
  • Does indecent dressing has any significant impact on the academic performance of undergraduates students in Nigeria?
  • What are possible solutions to the issue of indecent dressing among undergraduate students in Nigeria?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  • Ho: Indecent dressing does not have any significant impact on the academic performance of undergraduates students in Nigeria.
  • Ha: Indecent dressing has a significant impact on the academic performance of undergraduates students in Nigeria.

This study will be significant to educational stakeholders in university communities, lecturers, and university students as a whole,. To educational stakeholders, the study will enable them to develop policies inside the student handbook that will explicitly kick against indecent dressing and set up a task force to ensure effective implementation. For lecturers, the study will enlighten them on the need to be on guard by helping the management to ensure no student dressed indecently enters their lecture. To students, the study will serve as an eye opener to them on the short and long term effects of indecent dressing. More so, this study will contribute to existing literature, serving as a reference material to both students and academia in related studies.

This study focuses on the causes and implication of indecent dressing among undergraduate students in Nigeria. However the study will be delimited to undergraduate students in Imo State University.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

As every human endeavor is once faced with a constraint, the same was tenable during the period of this study. In the course of carrying out this study, the researcher experienced some constraints, which included time constraints, financial constraints, language barriers, and the attitude of the respondents. In addition, there was the element of researcher bias. Here, the researcher possessed some biases that may have been reflected in the way the data was collected, the type of people interviewed or sampled, and how the data gathered was interpreted thereafter. The potential for all this to influence the findings and conclusions could not be downplayed. More so, the findings of this study are limited to the sample population in the study area, hence they may not be suitable for use in comparison to other tertiary institutions in other , states, and other countries in the world.

Dressing is an act of covering the body with clothes. It is also known as clothing, which means items worn on the body to beautify, decorate or cover the body.

Indecent Dressing:

Indecent dressing simply means deliberate exposure of one’s body to the public. This practice is contrary to the acceptable norms and values of society.

Undergraduate:

An undergraduate is a college or university student who is not a graduate student.

1.10 Organization of the Studies

The study is categorized into five chapters. The first chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions and hypothesis, the significance of the study, scope/limitations of the study, and definition of terms. The chapter two covers the review of literature with emphasis on conceptual framework, theoretical framework, and empirical review. Likewise, the chapter three which is the research methodology, specifically covers the research design, population of the study, sample size determination, sample size, and selection technique and procedure, research instrument and administration, method of data collection, method of data analysis, validity and reliability of the study, and ethical consideration. The second to last chapter being the chapter four presents the data presentation and analysis, while the last chapter(chapter five) contains the summary, conclusion and recommendation.

5.4 Recommendations

In order to curb indecent dressing on Imo State University Campus, very practical initiatives must be embarked upon to educate the student populace about the potential dangers associated with it. This is necessary to prevent further decline in the academic performance of Imo State University students. Recommendations aimed at addressing indecent dressing are directed towards finding a lasting solution to this menace as thus;

Recommendations aimed at addressing indecent dressing are directed towards finding a lasting solution to this menace as thus;

  • Since it is evident that indecent dressing bothers so much on morality, it will be prudent that Imo State University students are taught lessons on morality and the strict adherence to our cultural norms.
  • Students who dress indecently to lectures should be sacked from the lecture halls, and advised to dress decently before returning back to the lecture halls.
  • A dress code or a uniform in consultation with the fashion department should be introduced.
  • There should be an award for decently dressed students at the end of every academic year.
  • The stakeholders of tertiary institutions should be involved in instituting measures to harmonize dressing in all tertiary institutions.
  • The Guidance and Counseling unit of Imo State University should organize programmes to educate students about indecent dressing.
  • The government should domesticate Nigerian films and regulate the in-flow of foreign films. They should monitor the internet by blocking some sites that contain nudity, pornography, and indecent materials. The government should promote the African culture, values, and norms through conferences, seminars, and even television programmes. Government and other stakeholders in the education sector should encourage high institutions in developing enforcing policies to curb this menace (e.g. dress code policy).
  • Schools management should give orientation to new students immediately after their admission and registration exercise. Conference, seminars, and workshops should be organized for both the students and staff to create public awareness on the importance of dress code. The management should give rewards for decent dressers. Penalty for indecent dressing should be spelled out and strictly implemented. This will prevent further flouting of the law.
  • Lecturers and staff should be reminded and encouraged to help in implementing the dress code. Human development Counsellors should organize group and individual counselling and help young people understand the effects of indecent dressing.
  • Parents should be good examples to their children, spending quality time with them, monitoring what they wear and carefully selecting clothes they buy for their children from a young age, and being careful with what they expose their children to especially on media or the internet. The students should see themselves as role models; therefore they should be conscious of their mode of dressing.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Indecent dressing and other antisocial acts like; drug abuse and cultism, has become a major issue in moral misconduct among students of Nigerian tertiary institutions. Indecent or crazy dressing, also known as dress to kill is rampant among universities, polytechnics and colleges of education students, particularly the females; all in the name of wanting to look sexy, sensual, scintillating and stimulating, not remembering that they ought to look decent and responsible. Wearing skimpy clothes, also known as fitted, strapless and short blouses and sagging of trousers low waist or ass down, by boys and even girls, cleavages and sleeveless shirts, also known as spaghetti or off-shoulder, are major moral problems associated with decency in dressing faced in tertiary institutions today. Apart from the skimpy and tight fitting nature of these dresses, they are again transparent; revealing certain parts of the bodies that under normal dressing patterns ought to be hidden away from the glare of people. Ironically, these are the renowned modern fashion trends among students nowadays.

Nowadays, students now dress indecently for reasons such as poor parenting, peer pressure, wrong use of the Internet, fading values as well as demonic influence among others. The negative sides of indecent dressing are that many of these students become victims of rape on campus; they are lured into prostitution by peers because of the way they dress. Subsequently, they are tempted and influenced to become members of one cult group or the other and these result in poor academic performance. In order to curb indecent dressing on Nigerian campuses, practical initiatives must be embarked upon to educate the student populace about the potential consequences associated with it. Although, the steps being taking by many tertiary institutions to reduce immoralities and indecent dressing on Nigerian campuses are highly commendable. Today, dress codes and strict rules enforcing compliance of students have been introduced in colleges of education, polytechnics and universities across the country.

Improper dressings of students of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education has a high tendency of impacting negatively on their academic performance as the output of male lecturers most especially can reduce when they concentrate on watching such provocative dressings during lectures. Female students on the other hand spend so much money in buying such useless dresses instead of spending them on their academic materials. Their indecent dressing also makes them patronize discotheques, night clubs, brothels and hotels where they can have fun at the expense of their studies. The possibility of some male lecturers and even female lecturers falling prey to such seductive dressings which may result in sexual favours between the lecturers on one hand and students on the other hand is always high. This will surely be a hindrance to quality education; as such students will not be able to perform up to the expectation of their prospective employers and consequently lead to loss of revenue to the state. Aside that, the poor performance of students as a result of indecent dressing can be linked to unemployment. This is so because students who dress indecently have divided attention for their studies and are therefore unable to receive adequate practical training which is a prerequisite for employment by most companies. And because such companies are not ready to spend extra money training such partially groomed graduates, they will later find themselves joining bad gangs after their graduation. It is in the light of this that this research is aimed at investigating the possible causes of indecent dressing, its negative impacts on academic performance of students of Alvan Ikoku Federal College Education, Owerri, Imo state, Nigeria  and also suggest the possible solutions.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

It is increasingly becoming obvious that indecent dressing has gradually taken over the dress pattern of students in higher institutions of learning in Nigeria and the students of Alvan Ikoku Federal College Education, Owerri, Imo state, is no exception. It has become like an epidemic spreading so fast and the earlier something is done about it, the better for the future of our desperate and vulnerable youth. For better understanding, is necessary to know the meaning of decent and indecent dressing. Decent dressing can be explained as the proper way of dressing or the generally accepted way of dressing without exposing vital parts of the human body. Indecent dressing is the improper and provocative way of dressing relative to the society or culture in which it is being perpetrated. This is to say that indecent dressing cannot be properly defined in isolation of the societal norms or religious boundaries. What is indecent to you in Nigeria is decent elsewhere. This brings the assertion by some school of thoughts that indecent dressing is mainly due to “foreign culture.” Meaning this way of dressing is alien to the Nigerian culture and is therefore an affront to our very existence and identity. This is a case that needs collective efforts and attention from everyone in the country to fight against. This is an issue that we need to get rid of in our society to have a nation that is full of sane people.

Causes, disadvantages and solutions to indecent dressing in Nigeria

write an expository essay on the topic indecent dressing

They say you’re addressed the way you’re dressed. Indecent dressing obviously gives a negative impression about a person. The practice is what most would describe as unacceptable to the norms and values of society. But tell that to the youths, mostly university, polytechnic, and college of education, students who are most guilty of indecent dressing.

Many would also say indecent dressing is un-African. However, if we look back to the days before Western civilisation and colonialism, Africans weren’t really big on covering themselves from head to toe. For instance, Igbos of the pre-colonial era were barely dressed. Young maidens were known to cover their nether regions with jigida  or tiny pieces of clothes while leaving their chests bare until they were married. Young men wore ogodo,  a piece of cloth tied around their waists like huge panties. Today, such dressing would be described as indecent.

What is indecent dressing?

Indecent dressing can be defined as a deliberate act of exposing some sensitive parts of one’s body. Indecent dressing is mostly common among the youths, particularly the student population. It includes exposing one’s buttocks, breasts, and genitals in the name of camel toes, for the females, and clothes outlining the penis for the males.

Indecent dressing in Nigeria

Indecent dressing has become an acceptable trend for many students on campuses of higher learning institutions in Nigeria . Ladies wear clothes that expose half of their breasts and some provocative parts of their bodies. Men must be subjected to dealing with constant arousals that come with being around indecently dressed ladies all the time. On the other hand, men are guilty as well.

They now move around in different styles like sagging, hot bosom, low waist, and outlined genitals to show how “endowed” they are down there. Scroll through Instagram and Snapchat , and you will see different crazy dressing by Nigerian youths. Anywhere you go, at parties, offices, events, etc., you will see all manner of indecent dressing that will make you want to scream.

Indecent dressing has even entered places of worship in Nigeria. Some pastors are to blame as they preach that salvation is from the heart, not the body. We live in a time of grace when God will forgive sinners if they ask for forgiveness. Some churches look the other way from indecent dressing to win more followers.

Gone are the days when Sister Esther was sent to the back pew because she forgot to wear a head tie before entering the church or Brother Jude was stopped from entering because he didn’t shave his beard. Now, the church is woke and everyone is welcome, including half-naked youths. Are you still wondering why there are many cases of pastors impregnating their female church members?

Causes of indecent dressing

Below are the top five causes of indecent dressing:

Peer Pressure

Peer Pressure

Youths, especially teenagers, are usually subjected to peer pressure . Peer pressure is doing something because you want to feel accepted and valued by your friends. You’re not considered a “happening babe” if you’re not dressed like other “happening babes.” You’ll be called a “jew man” because you’re not dressed like the other “hot” guys around. Teenagers are of the age where they’re trying to figure out themselves. Thus they’re vulnerable to peer pressure. They want to belong and be accepted and so do what others are doing, ergo, dress indecently.

Poor parenting

Poor parenting

The Bible says teach a child the way he should go, and when he is old, he shall not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). Children watch their parents and emulate them as they grow. Some parents are advocates of indecent dressing and are not even ashamed of introducing their children to it.

Other parents may not dress indecently, but they’re not involved in their children’s lives enough to stop any hint of indecency. Some parents are so overinvolved and strict that their children tend to misbehave outside but maintain good behaviour at home to avoid suspicion. All these contribute to indecent dressing in our society today.

Foreign influence

Foreign influence

Some Nigerian girls want to be like  oyinbo.  They wear bum shorts and strapless tops to the mall during harmattan , forgetting that their Western counterparts only wear these things in summer when the weather is hot. Western style of dressing is now the trend; most times, Nigerian youths overdo it by dressing indecently.

Internet/social media influence

Internet/social media influence

The internet, particularly social media, is now a hub of indecent dressing. Influencers have now made exposing sensitive parts of the body seem normal. Most youths have access to the internet and can be easily influenced by the so-called trends. So, they emulate the models they see on social media by dressing indecently wherever they go.

Influence by entertainment and media

Every female youth now wants to be as sexy as Kim Kardashian. The guys want the gbola that Nick Cannon flaunted on his show. Yet, they forget that these entertainers are just chasing clout to remain relevant in their business. It will shock these followers to know that some of these celebrities don’t actually dress indecently outside their shows. It’s all for entertainment, but many youths don’t understand that.

Disadvantages of indecent dressing

  • An indecently dressed person loses value in the eyes of the rest of society. Such a person will not be respected in many relevant circles. For instance, an indecently dressed youth can be disgraced from an institution that doesn’t condone it.
  • Many have lost job opportunities due to their dressing.
  • Indecently dressed people often become victims of sexual abuse like assault and even rape.
  • Indecent dressing often leads to other societal ills, such as robbery and prostitution. For instance, an indecent guy may turn to yahoo yahoo   to keep up with his lifestyle. For the ladies, they become runs girls so they can afford to enjoy luxurious lifestyles.
  • Poor performances in school for students. When you’re busy trying to look cool, you tend to forget you’re in school to study.
  • Indecent dressing can cause more skin to be exposed to environmental hazards such as sunburn and frostbite.

How to minimize indecent dressing

  • The family is the basic unit of society. Parents have to inculcate the values of decent values by serving as role models to their children.
  • Schools and departments should introduce dress codes for students.
  • Religious institutions should not just preach against indecent dressing but enforce rules against it.
  • The media should censor what they show to the masses to reduce its influence on the youths.
