முதல் பார்வை: 3:33

தன் தாய் மற்றும் சகோதரியுடன் ஒரு புதிய வீட்டுக்குக் குடிவருகிறார் கதிர் (சாண்டி). குடியேறிய முதல் நாளிலிருந்தே அந்த வீட்டில் ஏதோ ஒரு வித்தியாசமான அதிர்வலை இருப்பதைத் தெரிந்து கொள்கிறார். தொடர்ந்து சில கெட்ட கனவுகளும் அவருக்கு வருகின்றன. அதிகாலை 3:33 மணிக்குப் பிறந்ததால் அவருக்கு அந்த வீட்டில் சரியாக அதிகாலை 3:33 மணிக்கு இவை நடக்கின்றன. மறுநாள் அனைத்தும் இயல்பு நிலைக்குத் திரும்பி மீண்டும் வேறு மாதிரியான அசம்பாவிதங்கள் நடக்கின்றன. ஆனால், இவை எதுவும் சாண்டியைத் தவிர வேறு யாருக்கும் தெரியவில்லை. இவையே மீண்டும் மீண்டும் நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. இவை எதனால் நடக்கின்றன? இதிலிருந்து சாண்டியால் மீள முடிந்ததா என்பதே ‘3:33’ படத்தின் திரைக்கதை.

நடன இயக்குநர் சாண்டிக்கு நாயகனாக முதல் படம். தன்னால் முடிந்த அளவு சிரமப்பட்டு நடிக்க முயன்றுள்ளார். படம் முழுக்க சிரிக்கவே சிரிக்காத சீரியஸான கதாபாத்திரம் என்பதால் அதற்கேற்ப கோபமான காட்சிகளிலும், பயப்படும் காட்சிகளிலும் ஸ்கோர் செய்கிறார். ஆனால், எமோஷனலான காட்சிகளிலும், அழுகைக் காட்சிகளிலும் முகத்தில் உணர்வுகளைக் கொண்டு வருவதில் சிரமப்படுவது தெரிகிறது.

சாண்டியின் அக்காவாக வரும் ரேஷ்மா, தாயாக வரும் ரமா, காதலியாக வரும் ஷ்ருதி செல்வம் ஆகியோர் படத்துக்குத் தேவையான நடிப்பைக் கொடுத்துள்ளனர். படத்தின் இறுதியில் வரும் கௌதம் மேனன் ஒரு ஸ்டைலிஷ் பேயோட்டியாக வந்து தனது வழக்கமான ஆங்கிலம் கலந்த தமிழில் பேசுகிறார்.

ஒரு புதிய வீடு, அங்கே நடக்கும் மர்ம சம்பவங்கள் என ஒரு சைக்காலாஜிக்கல் த்ரில்லராகத் தொடங்கும் படம், அடுத்தடுத்த காட்சிகளிலேயே எங்கு செல்வதெனத் தெரியாமல் தடுமாறத் தொடங்கி விடுகிறது. மீண்டும் மீண்டும் நாள் ரிப்பீட் ஆவதால் இது டைம் லூப் படமா, அல்லது பேய்ப் படமா, அல்லது சயின்ஸ் ஃபிக்‌ஷன் படமா எனப் பல கேள்விகள் எழுகின்றன. ஆனால், எந்தக் கேள்விக்கும் படத்தில் தெளிவான பதில் இல்லை. படத்தில் அடிக்கடி பேய் போன்ற ஒரு உருவத்தைக் காட்டுகிறார்கள். அதன் பின்னணி என்ன? அதன் நோக்கம் என்ன? அது ஏன் அந்த வீட்டில் இருப்பவர்களை பயமுறுத்துகிறது. அல்லது அந்த புதிய வீட்டில் பிரச்சினையா? இல்லை சாண்டி 3:33 மணிக்குப் பிறந்ததுதான் பிரச்சினையா? அப்படியென்றால் ஏன் இந்த வீட்டுக்கு வருவதற்கு முன்பு அவருக்கு எதுவும் நடக்கவில்லை, இப்படி எதற்குமே தெளிவான விளக்கம் இல்லை.

அசாம்பாவிதங்கள் நடப்பது, மீண்டும் சாண்டி கண்விழிப்பது, மீண்டும் வேறு சம்பவங்கள் நடப்பது, மீண்டும் கண்விழிப்பது என ஒரே மாதிரியான காட்சிகள் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் வருவது போன்ற உணர்வு ஏற்படுகிறது. படத்தில் ஓரிரு காட்சிகள் பயமுறுத்துகின்றன. உதாரணமாக பேயைக் கண்ணாடியில் காட்டுவது. ஆனால், இதுபோன்ற சில காட்சிகளைத் தவிர படத்தில் வரும் காட்சிகள் பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு எந்தவித தாக்கத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தியதாகத் தெரியவில்லை. திகில் காட்சிகளில் எல்லாம் கொல்லென்று சிரித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். அதிலும் சாண்டியின் அக்காவும் தாயும் முகத்தில் மைதா மாவு போன்ற மேக்கப்பைப் பூசிக்கொண்டு வந்து பயமுறுத்துவதெல்லாம் ‘ஜெகன் மோகினி’ டைப் காமெடிப் பேயை நினைவூட்டின.

படத்தில் மூன்றாம் எண்ணுக்கும் மத நம்பிக்கைக்கும் தொடர்பு இருப்பதாக கௌதம் மேனன் சொல்லும் கதை எல்லாம் கம்பி கட்டும் ரகம். முழங்காலுக்கும் மொட்டைத் தலைக்கும் முடிச்சு போடும் முயற்சி. திரைக்கதையில் எந்தவித சுவாரஸ்யத்தையும் கொடுக்காமல், பின்னணியைத் தெளிவாகச் சொல்லாமல் இதுபோன்ற கதைகளைச் சொல்வதன் மூலம் ஆடியன்ஸை நம்பவைத்து விடலாம் என்று இயக்குநர் நம்பிக்கை சந்துரு எண்ணியிருப்பார் போலும். அதேபோல க்ளைமாக்ஸுக்குப் பிறகு கௌதம் மேனன் பேயுடன் பேசுவது செம காமெடி. ஏதோ செல்போனில் பேசுவதுபோல “நான் பேசுறது கேட்குதா? நீங்க பேசுறது எனக்குத் தெளிவா கேட்கல” என்கிறார். “சிக்னல் கிடைக்கவில்லை போல... வெளில போய் பேசுங்க” என்று பார்வையாளர்களில் ஒருவர் சொன்னது காதில் விழுந்தது.

சதீஷ் மனோகரனின் ஒளிப்பதிவும், ஹர்ஷவர்தனின் இசையும் படத்துக்கும் பெரிய ப்ளஸ். ஒரு திகில் படத்துக்கான மனநிலைக்குப் பார்வையாளர்களைத் தொடக்கத்திலேயே தயார் செய்வதில் இவை இரண்டும் பெரும் பங்கு வகிக்கின்றன. பாடல்கள் எதுவும் இல்லாதது பெரும் ஆறுதல்.

படத்தில் எந்தக் காட்சியிலும் பயப்படாத பார்வையாளர்களை இறுதியில் ‘To Be Continued..' என்று வரும்போது பயந்து அலற வைக்கிறது இந்த ‘3:33’.

3:33 MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

3:33 is a film written and directed by Nambikkai Chandru, starring Sandy Master and Shruthi Selvam in the lead roles while Mime Gopi, Saravanan, Rama, Reshma, Gautham Vasudev Menon and others play crucial supporting roles. The film is produced by Jeevitha Kishore under the banner Bamboo Trees Production. It has music by Harshavardhan Rameshwar and cinematography by Satish Manoharan. 

Sandy(Kathir) and his family have shifted to a new house and since then they experience weird incidents. Kathir's girlfriend gifts him a new clock which makes a new sound at 3:33 as per Kathir's customised setting. But in addition to that, the starts getting sleep paralysis at 3:33, and it is revealed that the time is the spirit here. Whether he escapes the spirit's wrath or not forms the rest of the film. 

In terms of treatment and the plot line, 3:33 is a very unique film. For instance, the climax is something we've rarely seen in Tamil horror films, and even the usual flashback portions of the spirit is different here. The director doesn't waste time trying to force humour and stays true to the horror genre as much as possible. 

The writing too is fairly solid, with flaws here and there. There are a few logical mistakes that are visible to the plain eye itself. The opening stretch which lasts for around 30 minutes, has a few repetitive scenes where the film has a possibility of losing the viewer's attention. But once the dust settles, there is no turning back. 

Among the performances, Sandy is a surprise revelation. His performance in the emotional scenes is unexpectedly good. It's unexpected not because of doubts in his talent but this is a side of him that has rarely been projected to the public. The rest of the actors do their best but their reactions keep fluctuating between borderline over-the-top and lack of spontaneity. 

The horror portions are interesting after the first 30 minutes once the presence of the spirit is confirmed. But after a point, the narrative becomes slightly predictable. The film which so far tried to avoid all cliches, resorts to jump-scare moments and templates that drive every horror film. It's not sure if the back story of the spirit will convince every one, but it is different for sure. 

The background score by Harshavardhan Rameshwar is refreshing and pulsating. It lifts the film several notches higher. Cinematographer Satish Manoharan and the editor's work complements the writing well. One scene where the camerawork stands out is when a door handle starts shaking, and instead of showing us the door, the camera is placed in the handle's point of view to cover Sandy's reaction. 

This scene is also a testament to the fact that the film is constantly trying to be a better one. It wants us to take it seriously. While it works only half the time in a film that's approximately two hours long, the film can definitely be given a watch for the effort and it won't disappoint you.

3:33 Movie Review: Sandy makes a confident start with this decent thriller

If Maanaadu ’s Dhanushkodi was part of the 3:33 universe, he’d have surely gone, “Kanavu Kaandraan, ezhundhukkaraan, bayappadraaan, Repeat…” And it would have been a succinct way of putting to words the plight of Kathir (Sandy Master) in director Nambikkai Chandru’s psychological thriller, 3:33 . It is interesting how there are no time-loop films for decades together in Tamil cinema, and once the floodgate opened, 3:33 is the third such film experimenting with that genre this past month. However, the ingenuity of having a particular moment in time be on a loop works in favour of the film. It is the time 3:33 that is the ominous number that sends Kathir’s world into quite a tizzy.

Kathir moves into a new place with his family, and almost immediately bad things happen to him and the people around him. This tension is built up with some impressive ideas that might not have translated seamlessly on screen, but the rawness of the visuals add to the mood of the film. But not all these writing choices work since there is no cohesion to certain plot points. For instance, there is no straightforward answer as to why the “time” decided to strike at that particular moment in Kathir’s life. Also, initially, the film leaves us intentionally confused if it is a paranormal thriller or a psychological thriller. However, this choice works in the film’s favour because it gives us some intriguing sequences that, unfortunately, misses that sting when we are given clarity about the genre.    Made with a limited budget, and a minimal setup, 3:33 does come with its share of flaws. However, some scenes work despite the limitations, especially the standout sequence in the dark featuring an impressive Sandy. Since this is a chamber drama of sorts that is set in a single two-storeyed house, a sense of repetition sets in. The generic nature of certain jump scares add to the predictability. The borderline caricaturish portions by some of the supporting cast act as a downer. However, the final act and Sandy’s confident turn as the lead hero lends a lot of credibility to 3:33.     Just like his Bigg Boss friend Kavin, Sandy too takes the horror-psychological thriller route to establish his space in the lead hero space. In fact, with the presence of actors Saravanan and Reshma Pasupuleti, 3:33 might give a Bigg Boss Tamil season 3 reunion vibes, but points to the filmmaker for reining in the urge to use now-famous one-liners from that show. In fact, Chandru avoids tapping into the fun side of Sandy and portrays him as this extremely grim figure. This works tremendously in the film’s favour, especially in the final few moments of 3:33 that might feel predictable for some but is supremely effective nonetheless.    3:33 starts strongly and ends on an even stronger note, and in between, we have a mix-match of genres and the effectiveness of it is like a sine curve. However, the highs it hits is more impressive than the lows it falls, and 3:33 definitely ends up as one of the better additions to the burgeoning list of horror/psychological thrillers in Tamil cinema.

3:33 Movie Review

Christening a film 3.33 is an interesting way to torch the lamp of curiosity in the audience. While it gives away that the film has something to do with time, it leaves us wondering as to, whether or not, it will be the third flick of the year based on the time loop concept after Jango and Maanaadu . Debutant film maker Nambikkai Chandru ventures in to Tamil cinema with this experimental drama. 3.33 also marks the debut of yet another popular small screen face as a lead hero. The small screen has offered a ticket to k-town for many artists in recent times and the latest one to have his name in the ticket is choreographer Sandy. In fact, the movie is a mini Big Boss reunion with Reshma Pasupuleti, and Saravanan on board as well. Director Gautham Vasudev Menon has essayed an interesting part in the film. So, how has Sandy’s debut drama as an actor come out? Is it solid enough to chisel a lead hero image for the star in K-town ? To know that let us get in to the movie review.

The film depicts the events that occur around a young man Kathir (Sandy). Kathir moves in to his new home along with his mother (Rama), his elder sister Devi ( Reshma Pasupuleti), and her daughter Nivya . Kathir’s girlfriend (Shruthi Selvam) presents him a clock. He customizes it. Soon Kathir begin to experience eerie activities in the house. Particularly at 3.33. We are bestowed with the cliche scenes of a horror thrillers. Lights flicker, he hears mysterious voices, door knob open on their own, and he has nightmares. None of which the members of the family experience. The family go in search of a solution. A religious man tells them that there are bad vibrations in the house, while a doctor says that he suffers from a psychological issue. Which is true, is there a paranormal force in the house, or is Kathir suffering from a psychological issue, will he be able to find a way out and get to live a normal life, is what makes the rest of the flick.

Of late, many debutant story tellers that venture in to Tamil cinema come in with experimental projects and have fairly enjoyed a decent reception. Debutant film maker Nambikkai Chandru tries to do the same with 3.33. He has not done anything fancy with the plotline but he has made efforts to add interesting elements in to the plot with the budget constrains in mind to pique the interest of the audience. So, he brings in the spooky thing and the time angle. This has worked in favor of him to an extent. Largely in the first half of the film where he tries to lay the foundation for the story to unfold further. He mixes these two factors quite well to keep us guessing on is it a horror thriller or a psychological thriller. Whether it was an accidental occurrence or deliberately planned and executed writing strategy, it does get our attention and keep us invested in the movie.

Director Nambikkai Chandru has done the first part well. But unfortunately, as the film proceeds, he is deprived of ideas and seem helpless as to how to move the flick any further and the entertainer quickly loses stream. He gets repetitive. For instance, Kathir goes to bed, wakes up at 3.33, is scared and anxious, this literally plays in a loop for more than necessary. Also, filling up the paranormal portions with the cliches that we are so used to in Tamil cinema does not help either. Another hole in the already sinking ship is the shoestring budget. Fine it is understandable, but if you cannot even get your artists in to proper make up, does not matter how good your plot is, it is twice difficult to make it watchable.

Choreographer Sandy makes a solid debut as an actor. At no point he gives us the feel of a newbie actor. He is impressive in the character that is both serious and grim. Perhaps, our acquaintance to his jovial side augments a flavor to his performance. It would be interesting to see where he goes from here and his choice of films. Where is director Gautham Vasudev Menon in the film? Having him on the advertising medium turns out to be an attempt to only drive more audience to the theater. Actress Shruthi Selvam does not have much screen time. Still, she makes her presence felt. Big Boss fame actress Reshma Pasupuleti is adequate. The rest of the cast has delivered what was asked of them.

On the technical front, music director Harshavardhan Rameshwar’s songs do not stay in our memory for long. But his background score add value to the film. A predominant portion of the movie is shot inside a house but cinematographer Sathish Manoharan’s frames have ensured that the visuals are not too repetitive. Editor Deepak S Dwaraknath has emphasized the work of his colleague with his sharp cuts.

On the whole, with a little bit of supplementary creativity, tight screenplay and better budget Sandy’s debut drama 3.33 would have been a solid entertainer.

3:33 teaser: Sandy stars in promising horror thriller

3:33, which marks the directorial debut of nambikai chandru, stars sandy, gautham menon, shruti, reshma pasupuleti, rama, mime gopi, and saravanan..

The teaser of upcoming Tamil horror film 3:33 is out. The movie marks the debut of popular choreographer Sandy as a lead actor. And it also features director Gautham Menon in his favourite role, the narrator.

The teaser opens with Gautham’s voice pointing at a paranormal activity that is driving a man to madness. He’s being tortured by a ghost every day when the clock strikes 3:33 am. The man in question is being subjected to various kinds of torture, including mental trauma. “That ghost even calls me to play with it, doctor,” says Sandy’s character. And to make the plot of 3:33 more believable and appealing, the makers claim that the film was inspired by true events.

3:33 seems to have steered clear of mixing comedy with horror, which in the past few years have proven profitable at the box office in Tamil Nadu . The over-the-top exploitation of the horror-comedy genre had created a sort of void in Tamil cinema for a full-length terror-inducing horror film. Will 3:33 fill that void? We have to wait and watch.

3:33 is the directorial debut of Nambikai Chandru. The director has reportedly avoided including songs and comedy scenes in the movie. The film also stars newcomer Shruti, Reshma Pasupuleti, Rama, Mime Gopi, and Saravanan.

Rizwan Khan, a celebrity impersonator, opened up about his journey of working with Shah Rukh Khan and the challenges he faced in the gig economy. He expressed his gratitude towards Salman Khan for supporting him and other lookalikes during the pandemic. Rizwan also shared his unforgettable experiences with SRK and how he became a successful full-time lookalike.
