Anxiety is an important factor in second language learning so that it can filter amount of input which learners are exposed to. In other words, Learners with high level of anxiety are poor in performance, whereas learners with low level of anxiety absorb more input. Therefore, analyzing this issue can be helpful in the field of second language learning. For this reason, this paper focuses on origins of language anxiety such as perfectionism, fear of negative evaluation and self-confidence. After that, it offers some solutions and strategies for L2 teachers to reach their educational goals.

Researchers have found that second language learning can be a traumatic experience for certain students (Zheng. 2008). This feeling is often related to many sources such as language proficiency, language difficulties and fear of negative evaluation from both peers as well as language lecturers. Watson & Friend (1969) define fear of negative evaluation as apprehension about others' evaluations, avoidance of evaluative situations, and expectation that others would evaluate them negatively. As evaluation on each other is very common in second language class, the students feel uncomfortable when they think that they are being watched by both lecturer and other students (Zhao Na, 2007) thus making them feel more insecure and unable to perform well in class. Over the last decades, language anxiety has emerged as a major concern in second and foreign language learning studies, and it is a topic that has sparked much debate. This paper reviews the related studies conducted on the said topic. Specifically, this scoping review focuses on the effect of language anxiety on the academic performance of students. Results show that there is an indirect relationship between language anxiety and the academic performance of students. Hence, it is important to note that strategies that will lessen language anxiety in the learning process will be a great help for students to perform well in class.

The aim of this research is to analyse the phenomenon of anxiety in the situation of foreign language learning and teaching. A survey has been carried out to ascertain the state of anxiety among students of Ca' Foscari University of Venice specializing in foreign languages. Basing my analysis on the data collected using a questionnaire FLCAS 1 I will attempt to verify whether university students are affected by the feeling of anxiety with regard to the foreign language learning. Further research query is to decide which of the three aspects dominates among anxious students: communication apprehension, test anxiety, or fear of negative evaluation. After having analyzed the data, I will discuss the results and draw some conclusions.

Research has shown that anxiety is not uncommon in almost all disciplines of learning. Cassady (2010) introduced the term academic anxiety as “a unifying formulation for the collection of anxieties learners experience while in schools. The purpose of the study was to determine the levels of language learning anxiety of Education students of La Patria College. It also aims to be of aid to both learners and educators to learn and utilize the English Language with ease and to teach the language efficiently. It focused on determining the language anxieties of students. Data revealed that 40 student-respondents were ages 18 to 24 and above who were both 12 males and 28 females who belonged to first year and third year. They were purposively selected in their convenient time online. In explicit findings, student-respondents experienced anxiety were “neutral.” Moreover, when the respondents were grouped according to age, gender and year level, there were considerable comparisons of the levels of anxiety of the student-respondents which means that they differ in levels of anxiety. It is shown the summary of table of levels of English language learning anxiety, that interpersonal listening and interacting, establishing relationships, predicting, inferring, interpreting and comparing are all interpreted neutral. It means that level of anxiety of the language supported the claims that language learning anxiety is quite alarming but with neutral to the result of this study. Empirical analysis of findings on data gathered revealed that there was a significant difference between anxiety and student-respondents’ profile.
