Thus, while submitting a project, a student or a group should attach an acknowledgement page, wherein a short write-up thanking all the people who played an instrumental role in helping the person complete the project is acknowledged. Acknowledgements-section

The acknowledgements section is your opportunity to thank those who have helped and supported you personally and professionally during your thesis or dissertation process.

Thesis or dissertation acknowledgements appear between your title page and abstract  and should be no longer than one page.

In your acknowledgements, it’s okay to use a more informal style than is usually permitted in academic writing , as well as first-person pronouns . Acknowledgements are not considered part of the academic work itself, but rather your chance to write something more personal.

To get started, download our step-by-step template in the format of your choice below. We’ve also included sample sentence starters to help you construct your acknowledgments section from scratch.

Who to thank in your acknowledgements, how to write acknowledgements, acknowledgements section example, acknowledgements dos and don’ts, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about the acknowledgements section.

Generally, there are two main categories of acknowledgements: professional and personal .

A good first step is to check your university’s guidelines, as they may have rules or preferences about the order, phrasing, or layout of acknowledgements. Some institutions prefer that you keep your acknowledgements strictly professional.

Regardless, it’s usually a good idea to place professional acknowledgements first, followed by any personal ones. You can then proceed by ranking who you’d like to thank from most formal to least.

  • Chairs, supervisors, or defense committees
  • Funding bodies
  • Other academics (e.g., colleagues or cohort members)
  • Editors or proofreaders
  • Librarians, research/laboratory assistants, or study participants
  • Family, friends, or pets

Typically, it’s only necessary to mention people who directly supported you during your thesis or dissertation. However, if you feel that someone like a high school physics teacher was a great inspiration on the path to your current research, feel free to include them as well.

Professional acknowledgements

It is crucial to avoid overlooking anyone who helped you professionally as you completed your thesis or dissertation. As a rule of thumb, anyone who directly contributed to your research process, from figuring out your dissertation topic to your final proofread, should be mentioned.

A few things to keep in mind include:

  • Even if you feel your chair didn’t help you very much, you should still thank them first to avoid looking like you’re snubbing them.
  • Be sure to follow academic conventions, using full names with titles where appropriate.
  • If several members of a group or organization assisted you, mention the collective name only.
  • Remember the ethical considerations around anonymized data. If you wish to protect someone’s privacy, use only their first name or a generic identifier (such as “the interviewees”)/

Personal acknowledgements

There is no need to mention every member of your family or friend group. However, if someone was particularly inspiring or supportive, you may wish to mention them specifically. Many people choose to thank parents, partners, children, friends, and even pets, but you can mention anyone who offered moral support or encouragement, or helped you in a tangible or intangible way.

Some students may wish to dedicate their dissertation to a deceased influential person in their personal life. In this case, it’s okay to mention them first, before any professional acknowledgements.

After you’ve compiled a list of who you’d like to thank, you can then sort your list into rank order. Separate everyone you listed into “major thanks,” “big thanks,” and “minor thanks” categories.

  • “Major thanks” are given to people who your project would be impossible without. These are often predominantly professional acknowledgements, such as your advisor, chair, and committee, as well as any funders.
  • “Big thanks” are an in-between, for those who helped you along the way or helped you grow intellectually, such as classmates, peers, or librarians.
  • “Minor thanks” can be a catch-all for everyone else, especially those who offered moral support or encouragement. This can include personal acknowledgements, such as parents, partners, children, friends, or even pets.

How to phrase your acknowledgements

To avoid acknowledgements that sound repetitive or dull, consider changing up your phrasing. Here are some examples of common sentence starters you can use for each category.

Common sentence starters
Major thanks Big thanks Minor thanks

Note that you do not need to write any sort of conclusion or summary at the end. You can simply end the acknowledgements with your last thank you.

Here’s an example of how you can combine the different sentences to write your acknowledgements.

A simple construction consists of a sentence starter (in purple highlight ), followed by the person or entity mentioned (in green highlight ), followed by what you’re thanking them for (in yellow highlight .)

Acknowledgements

Words cannot express my gratitude to my professor and chair of my committee for her invaluable patience and feedback. I also could not have undertaken this journey without my defense committee, who generously provided knowledge and expertise. Additionally, this endeavor would not have been possible without the generous support from the MacArthur Foundation, who financed my research .

I am also grateful to my classmates and cohort members, especially my office mates, for their editing help, late-night feedback sessions, and moral support. Thanks should also go to the librarians, research assistants, and study participants from the university, who impacted and inspired me.

Lastly, I would be remiss in not mentioning my family, especially my parents, spouse, and children. Their belief in me has kept my spirits and motivation high during this process. I would also like to thank my cat for all the entertainment and emotional support.

  • Write in first-person, professional language
  • Thank your professional contacts first
  • Include full names, titles, and roles of professional acknowledgements
  • Include personal or intangible supporters, like friends, family, or even pets
  • Mention funding bodies and what they funded
  • Appropriately anonymize or group research participants or non-individual acknowledgments

Don’t:

  • Use informal language or slang
  • Go over one page in length
  • Mention people who had only a peripheral or minor impact on your work

  • By placing the names of the most significant individuals at the start of the recognition, you can ensure that you mention the names of the persons in a logical order.
  • Briefly describe how their encouragement and assistance helped you finish the assignment.
  • Avoid overusing lofty terms in the acknowledgment. So that it is straightforward to understand, keep it as simple as you can.
  • No matter how minor a part they may have played in assisting you with the project, be sure to thank everyone who has contributed to the process. You can thank everyone individually if the list is lengthy.

How to Write Acknowledgements

  • 2-minute read
  • 25th March 2015

If you are near the end of your thesis, you can start to think about putting on the finishing touches . One thing you will have to do here is write your acknowledgements. A lot of people worry about this, but there’s really no need. As we are about to show, it’s actually quite simple!

What Are Acknowledgements?

The acknowledgement section of a thesis is where you can thank everyone who has helped you in your research. It is typically located at the beginning of your thesis, right after the contents page, and shouldn’t really be more than one or two pages long. The best thing to do is to keep it concise.

Who Should I Thank?

Think about the people who were of crucial importance during your research. This could include friends, family or professors, or even volunteers who have taken part in your research. It’s also important to acknowledge professional bodies who have given you funding or other help.

How Should I Write It?

There are no strict requirements for the tone of your acknowledgements; it’s essentially the one section where you can be a little bit more informal! Try to make sure the tone fits the person or organization you’re thanking, though, maintaining a formal approach when addressing funding bodies or other official groups.

Other than trying to be concise, the main thing you should keep in mind is varying your language, if only because starting every sentence with “I would like to thank…” will sound a bit dull.

There are several ways you could word your thanks. A few suggestions are:

  • This research would not have been possible without…
  • My sincere thanks go to…
  • I am grateful to…
  • Heartfelt thanks to…
  • I would like to express my gratitude to…
  • Appreciation is due to…
  • I acknowledge the contribution of…
  • I am indebted to…

And that’s all there is to it! Relax and enjoy writing your acknowledgements. If you’ve got this far in the thesis-writing process, you’re over the toughest bit now! For more information about writing a dissertation or thesis, read our full dissertation writing guide .

How to make an acknowledgment sample

There are people worth mentioning in an acknowledgment sample, and this usually refers to those who have helped the person during the course of his work. The people to mention not only include those who gave their support technically but also financially and emotionally. Cite only those who have substantially contributed to your efforts. Here are some guidelines for when you write an acknowledgment for project:

  • Use the right tone A formal document usually has an acknowledgment page found in the end page. Try to avoid personal thoughts which aren’t appropriate, especially if the document deals with a very technical subject. Rather, you can write the acknowledgment in such a manner that it would sound professional. Do this by making it short and more informal compared the other parts of your work. Be specific when talking about those people who supported you in your work. Put a lot of thought into this portion of your document. There are also some cases where the people who helped you would feel uncomfortable if their support is less emphasized over the others. To dismiss this thought, simply list the names alphabetically. This is perfectly acceptable.
  • You may also begin with the people who have contributed the most Thanking your mentors is, of course, very important. But you need to start with those people who helped you most in your work. For instance, if you’ve written a thesis, you can mention your thesis adviser or some major professor who has overseen your project first. Next will be the thesis committee members and the other supervising teachers who have directly helped with your project . If a group of people helped you, it’s best to acknowledge them as a group. This is far better than enumerating all of them one at a time. Remember that your acknowledgment sample shouldn’t be too long. However, if you were a part of a smaller committee, it is more customary and prudent to thank every member for their contribution.
  • Don’t forget the other people who helped you The lower echelon of researchers and helpers follow, especially if their contributions were as important. Assistants, classmates, and anyone else who helped with your work will also be worth mentioning.
  • Cite any financial aid that you received Many school projects get some sort of financial assistance to help in their funding. This especially applies to those who don’t have the resources to conduct their studies. They can get the funding they need through foundations or research groups in the form of grants, scholarships or fellowships. Therefore, it’s fitting to thank these organizations by their names and provide a list of the personal contacts you might have had with them.
  • Place the more personal thank you messages and the emotional supporters in the last part In your acknowledgment example, your personal appreciation for relatives and friends should come last. Of course, this doesn’t mean they contributed the least, but such contributions are usually more personal rather than substantial. There’s no need to mention romances as these types of relationships can change as the years go by. Keep your love life out of the page. There’s always that possibility that it will not last. For formality, also avoid inside jokes and personal anecdotes, especially in an academic acknowledgment page.

Who should be in the acknowledgment sample?

In books and other written work, you can usually find the acknowledgment for project page at the front, after the inside cover page. Acknowledgments aren’t governed by any rules on who to include. Generally, though, the usual people to include in the acknowledgment sample are:

  • Editors These people clean up and correct any errors that you might have missed. They are the fine finishers of written works. Authors should always spare a moment to publicly express their appreciation to the editor’s finishing touches on their manuscripts. You will commonly see writers express their gratitude to their editors in acknowledgment examples.
  • Graphic designers The front cover is usually the first thing you notice in a book, even before reading it. The artwork should attract readers, and graphic or book cover designers are the best people to do these and give credit to them.
  • Illustrators If you employed an illustrator to visually express the thoughts in your work, the acknowledgment is the best opportunity to express your gratitude for the illustrator’ skills.
  • Mentors There’s always that group of individuals who have inspired you and lent their support through the years. They’re the first people who taught and molded you into what you are now. Their valuable contribution is always noteworthy.
  • Publishers They publish the book. What else is there to say?
  • The members of your family These may include your parents, your siblings, your spouse or your children who lend their support while you wrote the book or made the project.
  • Your sources Professionals have the opportunity in the acknowledgment to thank all those who did research work or provided important information that is now part of their work. For instance, you wrote a book which dealt with forensic science. The writer or his researchers will have to meet and interview their sources on the field to understand fully the nature of their job.

Writing an acknowledgment sample speech

Acknowledgment samples can either be in the form of a written page or as a speech. There are several rules that you need to follow in making a speech. Mentioning the people who have helped and supported you in more ways than one are always worth mentioning. Here are some tips that you may take into consideration when writing your acknowledgment speech.

  • Ideally, the speech should only be up to 2 minutes long To achieve this, make sure that you have prepared beforehand a complete list of all the people who have contributed to your success. Remember that you’re speaking in front of an audience who can get bored with long speeches or who don’t want to hear all of the names of people they don’t know. Mention the most important influencers and keep your speech short.
  • Prioritize the people who will be at the event Not all those people who have helped you with your work would attend the presentation. If there are time constraints to your appearance, give priority in mentioning the names of those who are there. Doing this can make the gesture more emotional and significant.
  • You can use short anecdotes in your speech Injecting an anecdote to emphasize a point can be helpful to your speech. Choose the anecdote judicially and consider one which involves more than a single person in attendance. This will make the narrative more meaningful and is also an efficient way of saving stage time.
  • Choose sincerity over humor There’s always that urge to liven up the audience with attempts of offensive humor or even by poking fun at people. This could work if you were a stand-up comedian. But for acknowledgment speeches, it’s much more appropriate to utilize your limited stage time by expressing your sincerity. Believe it or not, your humble gratitude will resound more than any ironic jokes.

Writing other types of acknowledgment samples

There are other types of acknowledgment samples that you can compose for specific occasions. You can make literary or musical acknowledgments. Others to give thanks for much needed financial contributions. But the main gist to all these types is to acknowledge the support and help of those who contributed to the success of one’s work. H ere are some tips to guide you when making these acknowledgments:

  • Think creatively when writing the acknowledgment There’s always a person or an organization who’s responsible for breaking a written opus into the public eye. One who had his work published should afford due recognition to those who first broke the story. Typically, you must list such credits based on the individual publications where they appeared in first. Similar to academic publications, it’s also essential to address those who assisted you financially for your work’s publication. Also, list any fellowships or grants that gave support while you worked on a written opus in your acknowledgments.
  • For informal acknowledgment examples, mention you can even mention your friends There’s more fun involved in writing informal acknowledgments, for instance, when thanking people involved in producing music. You don’t need a lot of formalities, and the tone isn’t relevant. Still, you should give credit to the noteworthy.
  • Proofread first before finalizing After thanking everyone, it would be very awkward for you to misspell or mispronounce words and names when giving your acknowledgments. An acknowledgment is still an important part of your work. Spend a little more time for revisions and proofreading as you have done in the main project.

20 Best Acknowledgement Samples and Templates

Most published works include an Acknowledgement page that thanks to the people who helped the author put the book, thesis, or presentation together. Similarly, it is vital to acknowledge such people when something you write is published or recognized publicly. Doing this will go a long way in showing them that their contribution – whether professional, emotional or personal – did not go unnoticed.

That said, writing an acknowledgment is not always an easy task. You have to use the write format and tone and pick whom among your long list of supporters to mention. This article looks at everything that goes into this key part of any published work.

What Is Acknowledgement?

Acknowledgments are a crucial element of any published piece of work, be it professional, fictional, non-fictional, or academic. The acknowledgment section is dedicated to thanking the people that helped the author put together the writing. For example, in a thesis, the acknowledgment page will recognize the efforts of lecturers, lab assistants, and librarians that helped the writer research their findings.

Usually, the acknowledgment is one to two pages long and placed at the beginning of the published work, following the contents page. It is concise, to the point, and can take several formats. It can also mention one person or team or multiple parties.

Who Should Be in the Acknowledgment?

A lot of work goes into creating published work, especially a thesis, and there are so many people you could thank in the acknowledgments. There is also no hard and fast rule about who should or shouldn’t be included. As such, you could mention family members, friends, employers, professors, librarians, lab assistants, and volunteers who made your research possible. That said, here are the parties most commonly mentioned in acknowledgments:

  • Mentors – These are the people that have inspired, supported, and molded you into the person you are today. You can mention their contribution in your acknowledgment.
  • Sources – Thank your sources or everyone who did research work or provided you with crucial information for your thesis.
  • Graphic Designers – If the front cover of your work includes attractive artwork designed to draw in readers, you should thank your book cover or graphic designer.
  • Illustrators – Some books or published works include in-page illustrations that express their content. If yours does, mention your illustrators in the acknowledgment.
  • Editors – Thank your editors. These are the people that read through your work and correct any errors – grammatical, spelling, format, etc. – that you might have made.
  • Publishers – Many authors also thank the people that published their books.
  • Family Members – Mention friends, siblings, parents, children, or spouses that supported you during your research and writing period.

How to Write Acknowledgements

Because the Acknowledgment page is not part of your research or primary content, it can be challenging to weave it into the rest of the book. This usually means that you have to be very particular about your tone, format, content, and delivery. The following step-by-step guide will help you:

Step 1: Choose Your Tone

Book authors have more flexibility when it comes to the tone of their acknowledgments. The acknowledgment in a thesis – however – should be brief, professional, and relatively informal compared to the rest of the document. It should also be specific to the parties that helped you.

Step 2: Select a Format

Depending on your writing preferences, you can format your acknowledgment as an alphabetical list or paragraph. The latter is more personal because it goes into details about the person’s contribution, while the latter is more general. It works well for authors who would prefer not to emphasize the support of some people over others.

Step 3: Mention the Important Names

The key people to acknowledge for support on your thesis are your advisors and professors. You can also thank the academics that supervised your project and the thesis committee. If the committee was small, consider thanking them individually for their contribution.

Step 4: Thank Other Assistants

Don’t forget to mention librarians, lab assistants, junior professors, or even classmates that played a role in your project. You don’t have to go into detail about what they did; you can just mention them by name and thank them for their contribution.

Step 5: Mention Any Financial Aid You Received

If your project was funded by a research group, scholarship, or foundation, it is customary to thank them. You can mention them by name or contact data.

Step 6: Thank Friends and Family

Finally, close your acknowledgment by thanking your parents, siblings, friends, partners, or other close acquaintances that supported you during the research process. Try not to go into detail about or make any declarations on current romances or friendships, as these tend to change with time, and it could be a hassle to edit your acknowledgment page.

Tips for Writing Acknowledgements

Many acknowledgments are written on paper, while others are delivered as speeches. If you decide to go with the latter option, here are some tips you should consider:

  • Keep your speech short – It is highly likely that the audience won’t be entirely made up of people in your acknowledgment list, so they probably won’t want to listen to you drone on for pure. Cut your list to the most important names.
  • Be sincere in your delivery – Avoid using humor in a bid to capture the audience’s attention, as you never know when things could go wrong. Someone could take a joke personally. Instead, be sincere about your gratitude. The audience will respond to that.
  • Mention present parties – Try to mention the people on your list who made it to the event where you will be giving your speech. This will make the acknowledgment more special.
  • Use anecdotes to emphasize points, especially when describing how someone supported you.

Even if you are an expert in your field, it is unlikely that you will work alone on a thesis or research work. If you had help during the research, writing, editing, or publishing phases of your paper or book – and you likely did – it is important to appreciate the people who helped you through a well-written Acknowledgement. You can use this one to two-page piece to thank your professors, colleagues, research assistants, editors, publishers, friends, and family for their support.

Acknowledgements 101: The Basics

The acknowledgements section in your thesis or dissertation is where you express gratitude to those who helped bring your project to fruition. This section is typically brief (a page or less) and less formal, but it’s crucial to thank the right individuals in the right order .

As a rule of thumb, you’ll usually begin with academic support : your supervisors, advisors, and faculty members. Next, you’ll acknowledge any funding bodies or sponsors that supported your research. You’ll then follow this with your intellectual contributors , such as colleagues and peers. Lastly, you’ll typically thank your personal support network , including family, friends, and even pets who offered emotional support during your studies.

As you can probably see, this order moves from the most formal acknowledgements to the least . Typically, your supervisor is mentioned first, due to their significant role in guiding and potentially evaluating your work. However, while this structure is recommended, it’s essential to adapt it based on any specific guidelines from your university. So, be sure to always check (and adhere to) any requirements or norms specific to your university.

With that groundwork laid, let’s look at a few dissertation and thesis acknowledgement examples . If you’d like more, check out our collection of dissertation examples here .

Example #1: Formal and Professional

This acknowledgement formally expresses gratitude to academic mentors and peers, emphasising professional support and academic guidance.

I extend my deepest gratitude to my supervisor, Professor Jane Smith, for her unwavering support and insightful critiques throughout my research journey. Her deep commitment to academic excellence and meticulous attention to detail have significantly shaped this dissertation. I am equally thankful to the members of my thesis committee, Dr. John Doe and Dr. Emily White, for their constructive feedback and essential suggestions that enhanced the quality of my work.

My appreciation also goes to the faculty and staff in the Department of Biology at University College London, whose resources and assistance have been invaluable. I would also like to acknowledge my peers for their camaraderie and the stimulating discussions that inspired me throughout my academic journey. Their collective wisdom and encouragement have been a cornerstone of my research experience.

Finally, my sincere thanks to the technical staff whose expertise in managing laboratory equipment was crucial for my experiments. Their patience and readiness to assist at all times have left a profound impact on the completion of my project.

Example #2: Warm and Personal

This acknowledgement warmly credits the emotional and personal support received from family, friends and an approachable mentor during the research process.

This thesis is a reflection of the unwavering support and boundless love I received from my family and friends during this challenging academic pursuit. I owe an immense debt of gratitude to my parents, who nurtured my curiosity and supported my educational endeavours from the very beginning.

To my partner, Alex, your endless patience and understanding, especially during the most demanding phases of this research, have been my anchor. A heartfelt thank you to my supervisor, Dr. Mark Brown, whose mentorship extended beyond the academic realm into personal guidance, providing comfort and motivation during tough times.

I am also thankful for my friends, who provided both distractions when needed and encouragement when it seemed impossible to continue. The discussions and unwavering support from my peers at the university have enriched my research experience, making this journey not only possible but also enjoyable. Their presence and insights have been pivotal in navigating the complexities of my research topic.

Example #3: Inclusive of Challenges

This acknowledgement recognises the wide range of support received during unexpected personal and academic challenges, highlighting resilience and communal support.

The path to completing this dissertation has been fraught with both professional challenges and personal adversities. I am profoundly grateful for the enduring support of my supervisor, Dr. Lisa Green, whose steadfast belief in my capabilities and academic potential encouraged me to persevere even during my lowest moments. Her guidance was a beacon of light in times of doubt.

I must also express my deepest appreciation for my family, who stepped in not only with emotional reassurance, but also with critical financial support, when unexpected personal challenges arose. Their unconditional love and sacrifice have been the foundation of my resilience and success.

I am thankful, too, for the support services at the university, including the counselling centre, whose staff provided me with the tools to manage stress and maintain focus on my academic goals. Each of these individuals and institutions played a crucial role in my journey, reminding me that the pursuit of knowledge is not a solo expedition but a communal effort.

Example #4: Institution-Centric

This acknowledgement succinctly appreciates the financial, academic, and operational support provided by the university and its staff.

This dissertation would not have been possible without the generous financial support from the University of Edinburgh Scholarship Programme, which enabled me to focus fully on my research without financial burden. I am profoundly grateful to my advisor, Professor Richard Miles, for his sage advice, rigorous academic guidance, and the confidence he instilled in me. His expertise in the field of microbiology greatly enriched my work.

I would also like to thank the staff at the university library, whose assistance was indispensable. Their patience and willingness to help locate rare and essential resources facilitated a thorough and comprehensive literature review. Additionally, the administrative and technical staff, who often go unmentioned, provided necessary support that greatly enhanced my research experience. Their dedication and hard work create an environment conducive to academic success.

Lastly, my peers’ encouragement and the intellectual environment at the university have been vital in completing my research.

Example #5: Reflective and philosophical

This acknowledgement reflects on the philosophical growth and personal insights gained through the support of mentors, peers, and family, framing the dissertation as a journey of intellectual discovery.

Completing this thesis has been not only an academic challenge but also a profound journey of personal and philosophical growth.

I am immensely grateful to my mentor, Professor Sarah Johnson, for encouraging me to explore complex ideas and to challenge conventional wisdom. Her guidance helped me navigate the philosophical underpinnings of my research and deepened my analytical skills. My fellow students in the Philosophy Department provided a supportive and intellectually stimulating community. Our discussions extended beyond the classroom, offering new insights and perspectives that were crucial to my thesis.

I am also deeply thankful for my family, whose intellectual curiosity and spirited philosophical debates at home sparked my interest in philosophy from a young age. Their continuous support and belief in my academic pursuits have been instrumental in my success.

This dissertation reflects not only my work but also the collective support of everyone who has touched my life academically and personally. The journey has taught me the value of questioning and the importance of diverse perspectives in enriching our understanding of complex philosophical issues.

What is an Acknowledgement in Academic Writing?

When should acknowledgements be used, types of acknowledgements, how to write an acknowledgement for college, useful phrases to uses in acknowledgements, example of an acknowledgement.

Writing an acknowledgment for a college paper, research project or dissertation is an important section. It gives students an opportunity to show their gratitude to all those academic advisors and everyone involved in making the research work possible. While it may seem relatively easy to compose it, it’s essential to give it a good thought and sort the individuals mentioned according to their significance and the impact they have made. Most college papers will require showing your appreciation in a condensed way. Learning how to write an acknowledgment, keep your tone official and avoid getting overly emotional (unless applicable).

Remember that you are allowed to use personal pronouns in this section of your research paper as they are always mentioned as you compose this part. The rest of your writing should avoid them unless it is personal reflective research where the use of personal pronouns is allowed. If you are uncertain about the writing tone, you should consult an academic advisor first. When you already know your subject and the list of people you would like to mention, think twice before you start and do not include those individuals who have not contributed to your work. If the situation allows mentioning your family or a high school teacher, discuss things first!

In the majority of cases, you may include:

  • Academic supervisor.
  • Secondary supervisor.
  • Academic helpers in your university department.
  • Technical staff.
  • Academic advisors from other university departments.
  • Relevant institutions, organizations, or charity organizations .
  • Former students.
  • Family members and friends.

While there are no strict rules that must be used regarding academic acknowledgments, these are mostly used when you are planning to start a final year project or work on a dissertation. In terms of structure, as you write an acknowledgment letter, this section must be placed right after your Table of Contents section . As for the length, there are no strict guidelines in this regard and no minimum length, yet it is recommended to avoid going beyond one page. You can sort your mentions in an outline before adding them to your final paper to calculate an approximate length.

Regarding when to use acknowledgments, most educators recommend focusing on the objectives that you would like to achieve and seeing how you can support your argument by turning to authorities, the academic community, or individuals that are well-respected. At the same time, when you are working on a social project, you may thank your parents and educators who have contributed to your personality. It is also necessary to consider specific references and mentions that will help your target audience see the list of individuals you may have consulted or worked with to achieve academic success and clarity of your ideas. It should work exactly the same way as composing an assignment abstract where you consider various ideas and take notes before shaping things. Since this section of your research can be edited later, most academic specialists recommend finishing your work first and then making a list of those people who have helped you by taking relevant notes.

When you are trying to determine what type of academic assignment you might require, consider evaluation to see if you only need a simple thank you acknowledgment to mention your primary academic helper or would like to point out that you have taken an interdisciplinary approach and researched your subject by turning to several university departments. It is an important point to consider! In addition to the general “thank you” type of writing, there are also:

  • Scientific Journal Acknowledgements. It means that you should thank the publishers and mention your academic advisor/college professor as a way to show the person behind your academic success.
  • Public Research Projects Gratitude . Public research requires mentioning your community, university, state, or the list of countries if it is a global project.
  • Personal (Reflective) Acknowledgement. This type of acknowledgment is where you can mention your family and people that have influenced you.
  • Sponsorship / Academic Grant Acknowledgement. If you are working on a grant, you may mention the sponsors that have contributed to your work financially.

Focus on the type of your research to see what contributions might be most applicable, based on your case. There may be thesis help that has been provided or you may have worked with the support staff on a complex laboratory project. It all depends on the situation, yet when you are working on a dissertation, the list of important contributors should be there as an obligatory section. It shows what type of work has been done and who has helped to make the research outcome possible by guiding you.

When you want to write an acknowledgment page, it is essential to take the following steps to keep things narrowed down:

Step 1: Use an appropriate tone. Depending on whether you want to thank a college professor in a typical term paper or a dissertation, your writing form may be different. You may have to mention the challenges of a technical project and explain what kind of contributions have been made. Keep your tone professional !

For example: “I would like to thank for the laboratory equipment assistance to Dr. Jones whose experience and patience have helped me to avoid delays”.

Step 2: Start with the list of important teachers and individuals who have been paramount to your research. Explain why.

Step 3: Mention other helpers, depending on your type of work, institution, organizations, etc.

Step 4: Talk about the grants and financial help you have received.

Step 5: If applicable, the next section should be more personal and friendly.

For example: “I would like to thank my family and friends for their constant support, listening to my drafts, and helping me to go through the challenges”.

Step 6: You may consider a special speech that should be around 3-4 minutes. Remember that your acknowledgment text should be around 100-150 words (no more than one page).

Step 7: Proofread and edit your acknowledgment.

When you brainstorm the list of people and funds to include in your acknowledgment, it is also recommended to start by looking through your executive summary for assignment . It is where most students have to mention those people, sources, or organizations that have helped them achieve success. When you are in doubt regarding this section, talk to your academic advisor and see what mentions are applicable based on your particular case.

Any time you publish work or are recognized publicly, it's good form to thank the people who've helped you along the way with an acknowledgment. It can be a tricky piece of writing, though. What tone to use? How formal should your thanks be? Who should you thank? Whether it be academic acknowledgments, public thanks, or other reasons for thanking people, wikiHow can help you offer your gratitude in style. See Step 1 for more information.

Academic Acknowledgment and Thank You Speech Templates

Writing Academic Acknowledgements

Step 1 Use the appropriate tone and form.

  • The acknowledgment page can either be a list or a more fluid paragraph. It would be fine to write, "I would like to thank Professor Henderson, Dr. Matthews, etc." until you've worked your way through the list.
  • It would also be perfectly acceptable to address each person individually and more personally: "I would like to thank Professor Henderson for her expert advice and encouragement throughout this difficult project, as well as Dr. Matthews for his brilliance in the lab." [2] X Research source
  • Some people feel uncomfortable emphasizing certain people's help over other people's help, in which case the list form in alphabetical order is a perfectly acceptable method of writing an Acknowledgment.

Step 2 Start with the most important teachers.

  • In general, it's helpful to think in groups, even going to far as to format all the thank-yous of a particular group in a single sentence: "I would like to thank Dr. Stevens, Dr. Smith, and Professors Clemons for their extraordinary support in this thesis process."
  • If you worked with a small committee, it's customary and thoughtful to thank each person for the specific things they contributed to your work.

Step 3 List other helpers.

  • If your scholarship at the University was supported by any fellowships or scholarships, it would also be appropriate to name them in this section: "This project would have been impossible without the support of the Katherine G. Katherine Foundation, the Reese's Peanut Butter scholarship, and the Guggenheim Group."

Step 5 Put more personal thank-yous and emotional supporters last.

  • Remember that your friendships and romances may change over the years, so it might be best to keep particularly mushy romances and declarations of love out of your acknowledgment page, so you won't have to see it later if it doesn't work out.
  • It's generally best to avoid overtly personal anecdotes and inside jokes in an academic acknowledgements page. If you want to reference other students' constant joking around in the lab, say, it would be better to say, "Thanks to Joe and Katherine for their friendship in the lab" than "Thanks to Joe and Katherine for dunking my slides in Jell-O when I was hungover." [6] X Research source

Writing a Thank-You Speech

Step 1 Keep it to no more than a minute or two at most.

  • Michael Jordan's Hall of Fame induction speech was widely criticized for being tone deaf and spiteful, talking down to many former opponents and somewhat tarnishing his great legacy. Don't fall in the same trap.

Writing Other Acknowledgements

Step 1 Get creative with a literary acknowledgment page.

  • Like an academic publication, it's also important to remember to address any financial support you received during the publication of your book. If you received any artist residencies, grants, or fellowships while working on your book, you need to list them in the acknowledgments.
  • Use your writing skills to approach the acknowledgment creatively. Authors like Lemony Snicket, Neil Gaiman, J.D. Salinger, and others have used the form for witty and usually-self deprecating anecdotes about the friends and cohorts they choose to thank.

Step 2 Shout-out your friends when your album drops.

  • Friends and family
  • Other bands who helped you along the way, lending gear or instruments
  • Recording engineers and label folk
  • Musical inspirations

Step 3 Write personal notes to ask for permission about public acknowledgment.

  • In the letter, explain your desire to thank them and explain the publication or event at which you'd like to thank them. Express your gratitude for their assistance and encourage them to get in touch to approve your acknowledgment. More often than not, they'll be flattered.

Step 4 Always double-check your list, proofread, and check your spelling and pronunciation.

acknowledgement for home assignment

Use in simple language: An acknowledgement is a way to show your gratitude to the people who helped you. While keeping it formal, make sure that it is not inundated with complex vocabulary or jargon.

Don’t be generic: A generic acknowledgement in an assignment does no good. Be clear and specific by properly crediting your contributors, what their contributions were and how that benefited your work.

Maintain a professional tone : Even if you are thanking your close friends or family members, ensure to do it in a professional style and tone. Strictly avoid writing any colloquial expressions or jokes.

Ensure correct formatting: Using the correct format of acknowledgement for assignment is essential to ensure that it looks professional and is done with proper seriousness. Note that formatting is checked by most institutions in assignment assessment.

Proofread thoroughly: Since acknowledgement appears at the beginning of an assignment, any mistakes in it can create the impression that the rest of the work might also contain errors. So, proofread this section thoroughly.

Acknowledgement for assignment is an important part that most writers miss out or consider insignificant. But it is as important as the assignment body itself.

A powerful acknowledgement for assignment can give your evaluators the impression that you have approached your project with integrity and seriousness.

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Los angeles dodgers | dodgers trade for infield depth, adding cavan biggio from the blue jays, the son of hall of famer craig biggio, he’ll split time at third base until max muncy returns. biggio was batting just .200 with two home runs and nine rbis in 44 games this season before he was designated for assignment last week..

acknowledgement for home assignment

Outfielder Miguel Vargas was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room on the active roster.

Biggio, 29, has six seasons of experience with the Blue Jays, batting .227 with 48 home runs and 176 RBIs in 490 career games. He was batting just .200 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 44 games this season before he was designated for assignment on Friday.

Biggio was in Wednesday’s starting lineup, playing third base and batting ninth against Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray.

“To have a team like the Dodgers come and pick me up after my time in Toronto, where I spent so many years with so many relationships there, and playing against this team about a month and a half ago, obviously very special and very fortunate and grateful to be here,” Biggio said in front of his new Dodgers locker Wednesday afternoon.

The son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, who played 20 seasons for the Houston Astros, has played every position but pitcher and catcher. The left-handed hitter will split time at third base with Kiké Hernandez until Max Muncy returns from an oblique injury.

Manager Dave Roberts said the trade was needed since there still is not a timetable for Muncy’s return. Hernandez, a right-handed hitter, has played the bulk of the time at third base, but was batting .190 in 19 games since Muncy went on the IL.

“To get some coverage vs. right-handed pitching, running him out there at third base is sort of the plan,” Roberts said. “If I have to kick him out, whether it be to center, to right, second base, during a game for whatever reason, (if) the game calls for it, we can do that. But yeah, it’s primarily just a play at third base vs. right-handed pitching.”

Biggio, a Houston native and Notre Dame product, has 80 games of experience at third base (68 starts) and played four games (two starts) at the position this season.

“I know the player that I can be, I know what I’m capable of, I know that I can reach it and I’m hoping to do so with the Dodgers,” said Biggio, whose best season was his rookie year of 2019 when he hit 16 home runs with 48 RBIs in 100 games and finished fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting.

Fisher, 23, was a fourth-round draft pick in 2018 out of Clear Falls High School in League City, Texas. He was 2-1 with a 5.68 ERA this season in 15 combined relief appearances between Double-A Tulsa and Oklahoma City. He has a 5.51 ERA across 134 career minor league appearances (12 starts).

Vargas, 24, was 5 for 20 (.250) with one home run and four RBIs across eight games with the Dodgers this season.

In 107 major league games over the past three seasons, Vargas is a career .195 hitter with nine home runs and 44 RBIs. By contrast, in 99 games at Triple-A over the past two seasons, Vargas was batting .291 with 18 home runs and 81 RBIs.

“Vargy, I really do feel he’s a major league ballplayer,” Roberts said. “I think that just to have the opportunity to play every day is important for his development. And also, just continue to take repetitions out in left field, which I think he needs to continue to get better.”

ROTATION ADJUSTMENT

Instead of starting in Thursday’s series finale against the Rangers, right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto will have his next outing pushed back to Saturday against the Kansas City Royals.

Roberts said there is no injury concern. The move is the team’s latest effort to give Yamamoto extra days between starts to better mimic his pitching schedule in Japan.

As for the starter on Thursday, Roberts was noncommittal, with a bullpen day likely. Gavin Stone will pitch on Friday against the Royals while Tyler Glasnow takes the mound on Sunday.

Muncy took ground balls again Wednesday and made throws across the infield but there remains no timetable for when he might swing a bat.

Baltimore Orioles' Gunnar Henderson Blasts Another Home Run, Keeps Making History

Sam connon | jun 9, 2024.

Jun 8, 2024; St. Petersburg, Florida, USA; Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson (2) celebrates after hitting a three-run home run against the Tampa Bay Rays in the ninth inning at Tropicana Field.

  • Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson went yard against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, carving out several spots in the MLB history books.

Henderson's three-run home run in the top of the ninth was his 20th of the season, which remain the second most in all of baseball. On top of that, the insurance Henderson provided helped seal a 5-0 win for the O's.

The 22-year-old went 1-for-4 out of the leadoff spot for the game. Henderson is now batting .263 with 45 RBI, eight stolen bases, a .947 OPS and a 4.3 WAR.

According to MLB.com's Sarah Langs , Henderson's 20 home runs through his team's first 63 games this season are tied for the seventh-most by a player 22 years old or younger.

Harmon Killebrew set the record with 24 in 1959, while Mel Ott, Johnny Bench, Alex Rodriguez, Bryce Harper and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each had 21. Eddie Mathews hit 20 in 1953, as did Albert Pujols in 2001.

Gunnar Henderson makes it an even 20 homers on the year. 💥 pic.twitter.com/lsFndIQOK8 — MLB (@MLB) June 8, 2024

Langs also noted that Henderson's 20 home runs out of the leadoff spot are the second-most by any player through 63 games. Former Orioles outfielder Brady Anderson had the most at this point in the season with 22 in 1996.

Henderson is on pace for 51 home runs and 115 RBI this year. The MLB records for home runs and RBI out of the leadoff spot were both broken in 2023 – Ronald Acuña had 41 homers and Mookie Betts drove in 107 runs.

OptaSTATS compiled all of Henderson's most unique achievements so far in 2024, which combine to give him the most exclusive achievement of all.

No player in MLB history had previously hit 20 home runs in a season prior to turning 23, hit 20 home runs in a season as a leadoff hitter and hit 20 home runs in a season as a shortstop throughout their career. Not only has Henderson done all three in one year, but it took him less than 40% of the schedule to do so.

The @Orioles ' Gunnar Henderson in 2024: 20 HR in season at 22 or younger 20 HR in season as leadoff hitter 20 HR in season as SS No other player in MLB history has accomplished all 3 over his entire career (same season or not). He did it all in one season with 99 games left. pic.twitter.com/AxYw4QMjSY — OptaSTATS (@OptaSTATS) June 8, 2024

Henderson will look to continue his historic power surge Sunday against the Rays. The Orioles can claim victory in the four-game series if they come away with the road win at 1:40 p.m. ET.

The reigning AL Rookie of the Year will presumably start at shortstop and bat leadoff.

Dodgers trade for Cavan Biggio after Blue Jays designated utility player for assignment

TORONTO, ON - MAY 18: Cavan Biggio #8 of Toronto Blue Jays takes the field to warm up ahead of playing the Tampa Bay Rays in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on May 18, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Mark Blinch/Getty Images)

The Los Angeles Dodgers are acquiring Cavan Biggio from the Toronto Blue Jays after the club designated the 29-year-old utility player for assignment last week, the teams announced Wednesday. With Biggio, the Blue Jays also acquired cash considerations in exchange for minor-league RHP Braydon Fisher and cash considerations.

The Blue Jays removed Biggio from their 40-man roster on June 7 to make room for utility prospect Spencer Horwitz , who they called up to try to ignite their struggling offense. Biggio reached five years of service time earlier this season, meaning he would have had to agree to an assignment to the minor leagues and he chose not to, prompting the DFA.

Biggio will now join a Dodgers team that leads the National League West division by 7 1/2 games.

Biggio was off to a slow start at the plate this season, hitting .200/.323/.291 with two home runs in 131 plate appearances. His best offensive quality is his patience at the plate, with a 10.7 percent walk rate this season, although that has been slipping a bit each year. He is, however, a versatile defensive player who can play first, second and third base as well as the corner outfield spots.

Biggio, whose father is Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, was drafted by the Blue Jays in the fifth round in 2016 and was developed in their system alongside fellow sons of major leaguers Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette . Biggio made his MLB debut in May 2019 — the same year as Guerrero and Bichette — and was a core member of the Blue Jays through their rebuilding years and into their more competitive seasons.

But in recent years, Biggio had started to lose playing time and was playing increasingly less this season as Toronto opted to play other utility players Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Davis Schneider more frequently.

The Blue Jays, who are two games back of a wild-card spot and ranked 25th in runs scored, are desperate to generate more runs. As The Athletic ’s Ken Rosenthal detailed , they have increasingly been making sacrifices on defense to do so. Even though Biggio was a versatile, plus-defender this season, the Blue Jays have opted to hang onto other players who are one-dimensional but offer more potential for offense and power such as designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach .

Overall, in 490 games with the Blue Jays, Biggio hit .227/.343/.382 with 48 home runs.

Sports MLB New York Yankees

Subscriber only, yankees stashing jasson domínguez at triple-a, where gerrit cole will join him.

Jasson Dominguez will have to wait to contribute to the Yankees.

That’s not a surprise, but it is official after the Yankees returned their top prospect from his rehab assignment on Wednesday. In doing so, the team reinstated Domínguez from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Jon Berti (calf strain) was transferred to the 60-day IL to make space for Domínguez on the 40-man roster.

These were largely procedural moves, as Domínguez, returning from UCL surgery, was expected to remain in the minors once his rehab assignment ended. While the 21-year-old has been sensational since getting back into games, the Yankees want him to play every day and have a set starting outfield with Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Alex Verdugo.

“When it’s his time, we’ll be excited for that because we know what kind of impact he can have,” Aaron Boone recently said of Domínguez . “But we’re not going to rush that either. It will be when it’s right.

“The time he’s gonna come up here, he’s gonna play. So that avenue is gonna have to be there.”

Dominguez hit .368/.415/.658 with six home runs and 13 RBI over his first 20 games in the minors this season. That included a .440/.440/.800 slash line and two home runs over his first six games with the Triple-A RailRiders.

The outfielder added a single in Wednesday’s win over the Rochester Red Wings.

Cole’s Next Start

Boone told reporters that Gerrit Cole will meet Domínguez in Rochester on Friday, per NJ.com’s Max Goodman . Cole (elbow inflammation) is having his own rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A after two starts with Double-A Somerset.

Cole allowed one earned run, walked none and struck out nine over eight innings in those two starts. He totaled 57 pitches in his most recent outing on Sunday.

Asked if this Friday’s start would be the last one of Cole’s rehab assignment, Boone said, “We’ll see.”

Scheduling Change

The Yankees and Red Sox will start their first series of the season a bit sooner than expected, as their Friday opener at Fenway Park has been moved from 7:10 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. In announcing the switch , the Red Sox said that they wanted to give Bostonians a chance to watch the Celtics play the Mavericks in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.

That game is scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. in Dallas, Texas on Friday.
