C.G. Jung's Psychological Types: A History and Philosophy of Psychology

Green open access

C.G Jung’s Psychological Types: A History and Philosophy of Psychology provides an in-depth historical and philosophical examination of the work of Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) titled Psychological Types, originally published in 1921. Subsequently, when referring to this work, Jung emphasised the fact that the psychological typology he provided in the book was not a ‘characterology’—an attempt to provide a systematic description of personalities. Rather, for Jung, his project in Psychological Types was intended to be used as a ‘critical apparatus’, a ‘conceptual scheme’ in order to ‘classify empirical material’—in other words, as an epistemological tool. As such, on the one hand, his work provides a philosophy of psychology. Being profoundly interested in the nature of psychology as a science and, hence, its ‘scientific method’, Jung expands on the works of his contemporary philosophers—William James and Henri Bergson—incorporating his reading of the philosophers from previous eras, who also happened to be the heroes of his childhood and student years—namely, Friedrich Nietzsche, Arthur Schopenhauer, Immanuel Kant, as well as various classical and medieval philosophers. As a result, Jung produces an epistemological framework for psychology that incorporates the subjective nature of psychological knowledge, as well as the recognition of the limitations of the intellect, whilst also formulating his own concepts, such as ‘individuation’, ‘fantasy’, and the very notion of a ‘psychological type’. Based on this framework, Jung offers his psychological typology as an epistemological method, or a reformulation of the scientific method: what it means to achieve ‘objectivity’ in psychology, to begin with, and, consequently, in science in general. This project, then, explores in detail Jung’s conceptualisation of his psychological typology as an epistemological tool by examining his reading of the above-mentioned philosophers. It also shows the historical layer of Jung’s work: for Jung, the history of philosophy—and for that matter, of science—was in effect a history of psychology.

Titel: Myter som sanning i ”Battlestar Galactica”

Författare: Ulf Liedström och Maria Dovgan

Handledare: Malin Nilsson

Examinator: Veronica Stoehrel

Typ av arbete: C-uppsats i Medie- och Kommunikationsvetenskap, 15 hp HT-07

Plats: Högskolan i Halmstad

The Life of Carl Jung, Founder of Analytical Psychology

Psychologist who theorized about how personality types shape our behavior

Carl Gustav Jung (July 26, 1875 – June 6, 1961) was an influential psychologist who established the field of analytical psychology. Jung is known for his theorizing about the human unconscious, including the idea that there is a collective unconscious all people share. He also developed a type of psychotherapy—called analytical therapy —that helped people to better understand their unconscious mind. Additionally, Jung is known for his theorizing about how personality types, such as introversion and extroversion, shape our behavior.

Early Life and Education

Jung was born in 1875 in Kesswil, Switzerland. Jung was the son of a pastor, and even from an early age he showed an interest in trying to understand his inner mental life. He studied medicine at the University of Basel, where he graduated in 1900; he then studied psychiatry at the University of Zurich. In 1903, he married Emma Rauschenbach. They were married until Emma died in 1955.

At the University of Zurich, Jung studied with psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler, who was known for studying schizophrenia. Jung wrote a doctoral dissertation about occult phenomena, focusing on a person who claimed to be a medium. He attended the séances she held as part of his dissertation research. From 1905 until 1913, Jung was a faculty member at the University of Zurich. Jung also co-founded the International Psychoanalytic Society in 1911.

In the early 1900s, Sigmund Freud became a friend and mentor to Jung. Both Jung and Freud shared an interest in trying to understand the unconscious forces affecting people’s behavior. However, Freud and Jung disagreed on several aspects of psychological theory. While Freud believed that the unconscious mind consisted of desires that people have repressed, especially sexual desires, Jung believed that there are other important motivators of human behavior besides sexuality. Additionally, Jung disagreed with Freud’s idea of the Oedipus complex.

Jung went on to develop his own theories, known as Jungian or analytical psychology. In 1912, Jung published an influential book in psychology, Psychology of the Unconscious , which diverged from Freud’s views. By 1913, Freud and Jung had experienced a falling out.

Development of Jungian Psychology

In Jung’s theory, there are three levels to consciousness: the conscious mind, the personal unconscious , and the collective unconscious . The conscious mind refers to all the events and memories that we are aware of. The personal unconscious refers to events and experiences from our own past that we are not fully conscious of.

The collective unconscious refers to symbols and cultural knowledge that we may not have experienced firsthand, but which still affect us. The collective unconscious consists of archetypes , which Jung defined as “ancient or archaic images that derive from the collective unconscious.” In other words, archetypes are important concepts, symbols, and images in human culture. Jung used masculinity, femininity, and mothers as examples of archetypes. Although we are typically unaware of the collective unconscious, Jung believed that we could become aware of it, especially through trying to remember our dreams, which often incorporate elements of the collective unconscious.

Jung saw these archetypes as human universals that we are all born with. However, the idea that we can inherit archetypes has been criticized, with some critics pointing out that it might not be possible to test scientifically whether these archetypes are indeed truly innate.

Research on Personality

In 1921, Jung’s book Psychological Types was published. This book introduced several different personality types, including introverts and extroverts . Extroverts tend to be outgoing, have large social networks, enjoy attention from others, and enjoy being part of large groups. Introverts also have close friends they care deeply about, but they tend to need more alone time, and may be slower to show their true selves around new people.

In addition to introversion and extroversion, Jung also introduced several other personality types, including sensing and intuition as well as thinking and feeling. Each personality type corresponds to the different ways people approach the world around them. Importantly, however, Jung also believed that people are capable of acting in ways consistent with a personality type other that their own dominant type. For example, Jung believed that an introvert could attend a social event they might normally skip. Importantly, Jung saw this as a way for people to grow and to achieve individuation .

What Is Jungian Therapy?

In Jungian therapy, also called analytical therapy , therapists work with clients to try to understand the unconscious mind and how it might be affecting them. Jungian therapy attempts to address the root cause of a client’s problems, instead of just addressing the symptoms or behaviors that are bothering the client. Jungian therapists may ask their clients to keep a journal of their dreams, or to complete word association tests, in order to better understand their client’s unconscious mind.

In this therapy, the goal is to better understand the unconscious and how it affects our behavior . Jungian psychologists acknowledge that this process of understanding the unconscious may not always be pleasant, but Jung believed that this process of understanding the unconscious was a necessary one.

The goal of Jungian therapy is to achieve what Jung termed individuation . Individuation refers to the process of integrating all past experiences—good and bad—in order to live a healthy, stable life. Individuation is a long-term goal, and Jungian therapy isn’t about helping clients find a “quick fix” for their problems. Instead, Jungian therapists focus on addressing the root causes of problems, helping clients gain a deeper understanding of who they are, and helping people live more meaningful lives.

Additional Writings by Jung

In 1913, Jung began writing a book about his own personal experience of trying to understand his unconscious mind. Over the course of years, he recorded visions he had, accompanied by drawings. The end result was a journal-like text with a mythological perspective that was not published in Jung's lifetime. In 2009, Professor Sonu Shamdasani received permission from Jung’s family to publish the text as The Red Book . Alongside his colleague Aniela Jaffé, Jung also wrote about his own life in Memories, Dreams, Reflections , which he began writing in 1957 and was published in 1961.

Legacy of Jung’s Work

After Jung’s death in 1961, he continued to remain an influential figure in psychology. Although Jungian or analytical therapy is no longer a widely used form of therapy, the technique still has devoted practitioners and therapists continue to offer it. Moreover, Jung remains influential because of his emphasis on trying to understand the unconscious.

Even psychologists who don’t consider themselves Jungians may still have been influenced by his ideas. Jung's work on personality types has been particularly influential over the years. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was based on the personality types outlined by Jung. Other widely used measures of personality also incorporate concepts of introversion and extroversion, although they tend to see introversion and extroversion as two ends of a spectrum, rather than two distinct personality types.

Carl Jung’s ideas have been influential both in psychology and outside of academia. If you’ve ever kept a dream journal , tried to become aware of your unconscious mind, or referred to yourself as an introvert or extrovert, then there’s a good chance that you’ve been influenced by Jung.

Understanding and Evolving the Rust Programming Language

Rust is a young systems programming language that aims to fill the gap between high-level languages —which provide strong static guarantees like memory and thread safety—and low-level languages —which give the programmer fine-grained control over data layout and memory management. This dissertation presents two projects establishing the first formal foundations for Rust, enabling us to better understand and evolve this important language: RustBelt and Stacked Borrows .

RustBelt is a formal model of Rust’s type system, together with a soundness proof establishing memory and thread safety. The model is designed to verify the safety of a number of intricate APIs from the Rust standard library, despite the fact that the implementations of these APIs use unsafe language features.

Stacked Borrows is a proposed extension of the Rust specification, which enables the compiler to use the strong aliasing information in Rust’s types to better analyze and optimize the code it is compiling. The adequacy of this specification is evaluated not only formally, but also by running real Rust code in an instrumented version of Rust’s Miri interpreter that implements the Stacked Borrows semantics.

RustBelt is built on top of Iris , a language-agnostic framework, implemented in the Coq proof assistant, for building higher-order concurrent separation logics. This dissertation begins by giving an introduction to Iris, and explaining how Iris enables the derivation of complex high-level reasoning principles from a few simple ingredients. In RustBelt, this technique is exploited crucially to introduce the lifetime logic , which provides a novel separation-logic account of borrowing , a key distinguishing feature of the Rust type system.

This thesis has received an Honorable Mention for the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award , the ACM SIGPLAN John C. Reynolds Doctoral Dissertation Award (as one of two recipients), an Otto Hahn Medal , the ETAPS Doctoral Dissertation Award , and the Saarland University Dr. Eduard Martin-Preis .

This collection contains University of Texas at Austin electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). The collection includes ETDs primarily from 2001 to the present. Some pre-2001 theses and dissertations have been digitized and added to this collection, but those are uncommon. The library catalog is the most comprehensive list of UT Austin theses and dissertations.

Since 2010, the Office of Graduate Studies at UT Austin has required all theses and dissertations to be made publicly available in Texas ScholarWorks; however, authors are able to request an embargo of up to seven years. Embargoed ETDs will not show up in this collection. Most of the ETDs in this collection are freely accessible to all users, but some pre-2010 works require a current UT EID at point of use. Please see the FAQs for more information. If you have a question about the availability of a specific ETD, please contact [email protected].

Teenage girl wearing doctorate graduation regalia stands in front of a podium

Chicago graduate makes history by earning doctorate at 17

Dorothy Jean Tillman II, whose grandmother was a civil rights activist, is now the youngest Arizona State University student to get a doctorate in her field

A Chicago teenager walked in her university’s commencement program after making history for earning a doctorate degree at the age of 17.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II celebrated the rare accomplishment, describing commencement week as “surreal” and “full of reflection and inspiration”, in a post to Instagram.

“I got a chance to meet many of my classmates in person as well as professors,” she said. “To get the opportunity to speak on the stage in front of 20,000 people live and 3 million online was truly an honor.”

Tillman first began her collegiate career at the young age of 10, while most of her peers were still navigating middle school and awkward adolescence.

Tillman, who was home schooled in childhood, began taking college classes through the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois, about two hours outside of Chicago.

She earned her associate’s degree in 2016 and finished her bachelor’s degree at Excelsior University, an online degree program based in Albany, New York, in 2018.

After completing a master of science degree in 2020, Tillman was accepted into the Doctorate of Behavioral Health Management program at Arizona State University in 2021 – at the age of 15.

Tillman successfully defended her dissertation in December, joining her classmates in person at ASU’s spring commencement on 6 May.

Leslie Manson, the associate professor who oversaw Tillman’s dissertation through ASU’s online program, said Tillman was the youngest person to complete a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health at ASU.

“It’s a wonderful celebration … but this is still something so rare and unique,” Manson said. “She has innovative ideas and motivation, which is wonderful, and truly, I think what is inspiring is that she embodies that meaning of being a true leader.”

Tillman credited her family as one of her biggest inspirations to complete her graduate studies.

after newsletter promotion

“Seeing my mother consistently work so hard to continuously uphold our family’s legacy and be that person that everyone was able to go to, if they needed anything … always seeing [her] like Wonder Woman definitely made me want to grow up [into] an accomplished person,” Tillman said to Good Morning America.

Tillman is also the granddaughter of Dorothy Tillman, the former Chicago alderwoman who was involved in the civil rights movement.

“People in my life like my grandmother, who was part of the civil rights movement, she of course harped on the importance of education and consistently learning something always,” Tillman said.

With her degrees now done, Tillman told GMA that she plans to continue reflecting on what her specific goals are as well as focus on other interests, including public speaking and a leadership institute she created.

“I’m really just grateful that the world is my oyster, and that I’ve done so much so young,” she said. “And I have time to kind of think that through.”
