9 Parts of Speech Activities for 2nd Grade
Parts of speech are a basic and quintessential component of 2nd grade grammar curriculum, so finding great parts of speech activities for 2nd grade is important! By the end of 2nd grade, your students will need to know how to identify and apply parts of speech accurately.
In this post, I’ll share 9 parts of speech activities for 2nd grade that will get your students involved and boost their understanding!
Parts of Speech Activities for 2nd Grade
Whether you’re teaching about nouns, verbs, adjectives, or something else, there are a ton of parts of speech activities for 2nd grade.
Use Interactive Parts of Speech PowerPoints
Interactive parts of speech PowerPoints are perfect for introducing parts of speech and guiding students through a gradual release process. Through modeling and whole group practice opportunities, students will gain a better understanding of what different parts of speech are and how they are used correctly.
Use teaching slides that have movable parts and opportunities for students to answer questions. As a result of this type of practice, students will be better prepared to work with partners and independently.
The interactive grammar teaching slides I use have modeling, whole group practice, paired work, and independent practice built in.
Find Parts of Speech in Reading Passages
Give plenty of opportunities for students to see the parts of speech in action and identify them. Providing model texts in which students can find different parts of speech is a critical first step to helping students later use parts of speech accurately in their own writing.
Each week in my grammar routine, we have a day dedicated to identifying the grammar skill in writing. I call it our “Grammar Gazette” activity because students read a little news story and identify different parts of speech in it.
Use Parts of Speech Task Cards
Task cards are an excellent way for students to practice or review parts of speech. Also, students are able to focus on one task at a time with task cards, which helps them stay engaged and motivated in the activity.
You can completely personalize task cards to meet your needs in your parts of speech activities for 2nd grade. Task cards can help students identify parts of speech in writing, or they can ask students to generate examples and nonexamples for parts of speech. Both of these tasks are critical for students to practice.
Each week in my grammar routine, we have one day dedicated to completing task cards. I usually have students do a “roam the room” activity. I place the task cards in different spots around the room. Then, students work independently or with partners to answer each task card on an answer sheet.
Play Parts of Speech Online Games
Online games for parts of speech will allow students to practice skills that are presented in a variety of ways. They are great for getting students engaged and motivated in the topic at hand.
There are a bunch of free (and fun!) games online for practicing parts of speech. You could have students play some of these games independently at a center, or you could play them as a whole group activity!
The website Word Game Time has a game called Word Invasion to help students practice identifying parts of speech. It gives the option to choose which parts of speech to include in the game at the start, so it can be used to practice different skills at different times, or as a more comprehensive review game.ABCya is another great site for finding fun, free parts of speech games. They have a game called Ice Cream Talk for students to practice with nouns and verbs. They also have several Parts of Speech Quest games, including this Parts of Speech Quest for Adjectives .
Parts of Speech Read Alouds
Use a fun parts of speech read aloud story to introduce certain parts of speech or to help students build their understanding of the parts of speech. High-interest, focused read aloud stories are great for presenting information in a new way for students.
Here are some awesome read alouds to add to your parts of speech activities for 2nd grade!

Sort Examples & Nonexamples
Solidify student understanding of different parts of speech by having students identify and sort examples and nonexamples in your parts of speech activities for 2nd grade.
Determining examples and nonexamples of parts of speech allows students to gain a deeper comprehension. Nonexamples are important because they highlight the attributes of the example more thoroughly.
Give students an opportunity to practice identifying examples and nonexamples by having them complete a cut and paste activity. Some words should be examples of the target skill and others should be nonexamples. Students cut out the words and sort them into the correct category.
Quickly Assess Students’ Parts of Speech Knowledge
Assess your students in a quick and effective way to determine their mastery after completing your lessons and parts of speech activities for 2nd grade. Assessments should allow students to show their ability to identify parts of speech in writing, generate examples of parts of speech, and apply parts of speech to their own writing.
In my no-prep grammar units, I have simple assessments to use each week that will show students’ ability in a quick and straightforward way. These assessments are meant to take students approximately 15 minutes and they are very easy to grade.
