Cooking Up Good Speech....

with "SpeechSnacks" that Inspire Children to Speak Well and Eat Well!

Sequencing Pizza—-{with SpeechSnacks for “first, next, last” and good listening skills}

Is it a pizza?  Is it a burger?? It’s both—and your kids will love it!!!  And to close out the month of March with another “green” recipe—I’ve topped this pizza-burger with some healthy salad greens.  I used arugula but any leafy greens will work—romaine, spinach, kale—take your pick.  Top it with a light dressing like balsamic vinagrette or squeezed lemon with olive oil, light salt and pepper.

Let the kiddos help press and roll out the dough, add the toppings in proper sequence as you have them repeat them back to you and you’ve turned your healthy dinner into a language lesson.    This week I’ve included a sequencing/listening game, a fun pizza itunes app, a recipe for edible play-doh so they can have fun playing with their foods and a pizza themed toy to play at home or in your speech lessons.   There’s enough pizza burger fun to keep ’em happy, healthy and busy for quite a while!

HOT PIZZA BURGER with CRISP SALAD GREENS

**Remember that while this recipe requires adult supervision and involvement, kids can take part in much of the preparation.  In addition, photos can be printed out and used as a sequencing task after you have completed the recipe.  It’s a great way to  work on increasing sentence length and conversational skills as well!

I love this herb infused pizza dough from Trader Joe’s! It adds extra flavor to an otherwise plain old pizza crust.   This is  1 lb of dough.

I let my pizza dough sit out on a counter for a few hours, covered with a clean dish cloth. It will help the dough grow and make it pliable for rolling out. This is the same tray that my grandmother used for many years to make her pizzas in. It ‘s a bit non-traditional since it will form a rectangular pizza crust—but that makes it even more fun to eat!

Let the kids press the dough into the tray, using fingers to  stretch it and a rollingpin to fit it into the pan.  Great for working on MOTOR SKILLS!

The next few steps are a job for grown ups only—-discuss the meanings of the words ground, chop, dice,  and sautee with your kids..

For this pizza burger, I used 1 lb of lean ground beef. Brown it thoroughly in a large frying pan..

Compare/contrast the onion and garlic….how are they the same/different in size, smell, color, and taste??

Saute 1/2 chopped onion and 2-3 cloves of garlic and add to the pan with the browned meat.

I always cook my pizza dough prior to adding toppings. This will ensure a crispy, not soggy, pizza crust. Cook in a 350 degree oven for approximately 10 minutes.

Instead of tomato sauce, I added one can of chopped/diced tomatoes to the meat mixture and incorporate thoroughly.

Spoon the meat/tomato mixture onto the pizza crust and spread evenly.

Kids can assist in this next step…help them SPOON ON and SPREAD OUT the meat/sauce mixture and SPRINKLE ON the cheese.

Add a cheese blend of cheddar, jack and/or mozzarella to your pizza burger. Place pizza burger into the oven at 350 for approximately 15-20 minutes.

Remove pizza from oven and top with fresh greens!!! !! I used arugala leaves, which are delicate and  peppery .  You can also use spinach, romaine lettuce or any other greens that you think your family will enjoy. Top with a light Italian dressing, balsamic dressing, or simple dressing made with freshly squeezed lemon, olive oil and salt/pepper.

Check out the printable worksheets…. Print out and laminate several copies of the pizza crust (one per student in your group).  Cut out and laminate the “toppings” for durability.

Have  your kiddos play the part of the waiter or waitress.  You order a pizza the way you like it and have them remember the order of the toppings.  OR order two pizzas to make it even more challenging and ask them to remember the toppings you ordered for each pizza!! When repeating the order of toppings, have your kids organize the sequence by saying “ FIRST you ordered tomatoes, NEXT  ,you ordered cheese, THEN you ordered pepperoni and LAST (or FINALLY) you ordered spinach.”   This will help them organize their thoughts into a complete sentence.   Order less toppings if this is too challenging—depending on the age/ability level of the child.

 GAME 2:

The toppings have a 1-step command printed on them. Cut these  out and laminate. Place them face down in a pile.  Have your student draw one, two, three or even four—depending on how many steps you are targeting in their goals—-Read the cards in order and have them execute the directions.  If they correctly follow the directions, they get to add those toppings to their pizza.  You can make it into a little competition and see who gets the most toppings!!  Use blank toppings to write your own directions.

Toppings include tomatoes, onions, cheese, sausage, peppers, anchovies (yuck!), onions, garlic, mushrooms, spinach

PAPPA’S PIZZA PILE UP

I love this game—I received it as a gift when my son was a preschooler and later started using it with my speech kiddos!

Can you help complete his pizza? Or will the pizza topple over before all the toppings have been added? Players take turns rolling the die and placing cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms and pepperoni piece’s onto  the pizza pie. If you cause the pizza to tip and some of the toppings fall off, you lose! The player who can outlast all other opponents wins the game! For advanced play, take Poppa off his base and he wobbles around even more while holding the pizza!I like to use this game while addressing many articulation and language goals.  And if you are working on the bilabials /p,b,m/ there are many words built into this game— pepperoni, mushrooms, pizza, pappa, mustache, buttons, balance, mozzarella.

Chocolate Pizza itunes app

Use this fun app to work on descriptions as you build your own chocolate pizza.  Great for articulation carry over too!!

EDIBLE PLAY DOH!

I found this recipe at www.cooks.com .  And although it does have a bit of sugar in it, most of the other edible play doh recipes contained peanut butter.  This was one of the few that didn’t.  Even though I am not a fan of Kool-Aid, I like that it adds some color to make it more fun!!!

Let the kids have fun rolling out the dough into a pizza crust, with cookie cutters or any other imaginative way to get them creating.  Reinforce action words like roll, press, and cut and expand on these words to create longer phrases and sentences.

EDIBLE PLAYDOUGH

1 c. water
2 tbsp. oil
1 c. flour
1/2 c. sugar
1 pkg. kool-aid, any flavor

Tips for Using a Pizza Toy in Speech Therapy

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

Have you seen the Melissa and Doug wooden pizza toy? If not you should check it out, it is a favorite in my speech room! It is a great way to incorporate an interactive toy into your food themed lesson plan! Check out the toy on Amazon by clicking here (affiliate link). Check out the pictures below to see how to EASILY use it to work on a variety of speech and language skills. I use it in mixed groups too!

how to make a pizza speech

Here is how I set up the session:

I take all of the topping off and tell my students they are the chefs and I am the customer. I divide up the slices between the students and tell them to make me a yummy pizza. When they deliver (across the room) the pizza, I hold the slices up to work on their objectives (see pictures below). When they are finished practicing each slice, I pretend to eat it (dramatically) and give them feedback about how I liked it (it was delicious, scrumptious, spicy, etc...). I repeat this several times in a 30 minute session (each time I tell them to use different toppings). I am able to get a TON of trials with this activity and the students LOVE it. I recommend it for prek-3rd grade students.

If we have time I have them use this "Design a Pizza" page. Click here to get the freebie. They can get creative with it! Some of my students like to design "silly" pizzas with non-food toppings and we laugh and discuss why we couldn't eat a pizza with spider toppings!

I hope you enjoy the tips on the images below. There are many more ways you can use this toy in therapy such as sequencing, requesting, and basic concepts. I hope you are able to implement some of them in your speech room.

A Pizza Lesson Plan That Brings Pizazz to Your Classroom

Pizza in the Classroom

The delicious combination of dough, sauce, cheese and toppings brings a smile to any child’s face. Pizza is one of foods children love. This October let your students experience some hot pizza fun not just in the lunchroom but in the classroom too.

  • Find Italy on a world map
  • Name where pizza originated from
  • Correctly sequence steps to make a pizza while making a real mini pizza
  • Demonstrate how to make fractions using pizza and toppings with 80 percent accuracy
  • Recognize simple fractions with 85 percent accuracy
  • Demonstrate knowledge of place value to the tenths place with 90 percent accuracy
  • Correctly identify adjectives with 75 percent accuracy

Where Did Pizza Come From?

Begin the lesson with a riddle.

I was first discovered in Naples Italy.

I am chewy and hot and kids like me a lot.

You roll me out of dough, don’t you know.

You can put any toppings you want on me.

Some suggested answers could be:

After allowing the students to guess pizza, show them world map and ask a volunteer to find Italy. Point out that Italy is a peninsula because it is a piece of land almost entirely surrounded by water and connected to a larger piece of land.

Explain that pizza first originated in Naples, Italy in the early 1889 when a baker tried to make a food using the same colors as the Italian flag. The flag is red, white and green. If possible, show students a picture of the flag.

The baker used red tomatoes, white mozzarella cheese and green basil leaves and that is how pizza was first created. The word pizza means “pie” in Italian. Today pizza is one of America’s favorite foods. Ask children what their favorite kind of pizza is. Read “ Little Nino’s Pizzeria ,” by Karen Barbour.

Pizzeria Place Value Center

Make your classroom look and feel like an Italian Pizzeria while students are learning place value skills at centers. Kids will love pretending to be the bakers and customers of a pizza parlor while they are practicing important math skills.

  • Ten pizza boxes
  • Nine single pieces of pizza cut from construction paper and laminated

What to do:

Purchase (or ask to have them donated) ten pizza boxes and write “ten pieces of pizza,” on the each box with a black marker. Cut-out nine pizza slices from construction paper, laminate the slices, and place them in the pizza parlor.

Place two students at a time at the pizza parlor place value station. One child will order a certain number of pieces of pizza and the other student must give him or her the correct number of boxes and pieces. For example, the student would ask for 45 or 14 pieces of pizza. The baker would hand the customer four boxes and five single pieces (45) or one box and four single pieces (14).

Pizza Parlor Make Me a Pizza Center

Children learn fractions while pretending to make pizzas for customers.

  • 8 pizza cut-outs
  • Several topping cut-outs

Instructions:

Provide pizza cut-outs and toppings for the fraction center. The student pretending to be the customer will order a certain number of pieces of pizza and instruct the baker to put a certain topping on so many of the pieces.

For example, a child may ask for five pieces of pizza with pepperoni on thee of the pieces. The baker will put five pieces of pizza in a pizza box and place pepperoni on three of the pieces. Both children will then write the correct fraction on a whiteboard and compare answers. The teacher walks around the room and checks for correct answers.

Children learn the steps it takes to make a real pizza while enjoying a tasty, yummy snack.

Ingredients:

  • Pizza sauce
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Canadian bacon
  • Foam bowls to place the ingredients in
  • Cookie sheet

How to Make:

Give each child a biscuit and encourage them to roll it out as flat as possible, and place the sauce and the desired ingredients on the dough. The teacher bakes the pizza in the oven set at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 to 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

After the students are finished eating, have them write down the steps involved in creating their pizza and draw a picture of their pizza with crayons on a white piece of paper.

For example:

  • Pat the biscuit until it is flat.
  • Put two tablespoons of pizza sauce on the dough.
  • Add pepperoni, mushrooms and peppers.
  • Sprinkle with Mozzarella cheese.
  • Bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.

Parts of Speech Pie

Pizza 002

Children review the parts of speech with this pizza activity. The teacher will give each student four pizza slices cut from white construction paper.

Students copy the sentences and fill in the blanks with an adjective , verb, noun or adverb from the word bank.

They may use more than one adjective and noun on two of the pizza cut-outs. Decorate the pizzas with crayons and markers. When finished, the teacher can place them around the room or on the bulletin board to give the classroom pizazz!

  • Pizza is _________. (adjective)
  • I like to put _________on my pizza. (noun)
  • I _________ the dough. (verb)
  • I eat my pizza __________. (adverb)

Adjectives:

  • Scrumptious

This October, cook up some fun in your classroom with a scrumptious pizza lesson plan that reinforces important math and language skills. Children will love making and eating pizza while they are learning important facts about one of America’s favorite foods.

Pizza is ranked among the popular foods that the world has. It refers to flat bread; round in shape, normally baked with an oven and on top is covered with mozzarella cheese, and tomato sauce. However, it is not necessary to use the afore-mentioned toppings, since they can be done according to personal preference, culture, and religion. In the discussion that follows, the focus is on the process of preparing a pizza.

While preparing a pizza, it is important to know that the steps are very simple, although it is vital to follow them well, in order to get a good product.

Adding yeast

The following is the process of preparing a pizza. Warm water is poured in a mixing bowl, and then sugar is dissolved in it. Next, yeast is added, and like sugar, one should wait until it dissolves. However, yeast is not added at once, but is it added continuously while stirring.

Sugar and water added

The mixture of sugar and water should be left to settle for ten minutes, or even more, in order to allow yeast to become active. More yeast and oil is added when the mixture appears cloudy and foamy on the surface. The two are equally dissolved through stirring.

Adding flour

Next, one should add two cups of flour to the foamy mixture, while stirring and only stop after it has dissolved in it. In order to get perfect results, one should ensure the entire mixture appears smooth. In order to ensure the dry flour is moistened, one should use hands to combine it.

Kneading the mixture

On seeing that all the moisture has absorbed the flour, and it has become a solid mass, one should discard it from the mixing bowl, and place it on a surface with flour in order to knead it properly.

Testing the dough

In order to ensure the dough is kneaded properly, one should fold it in half, and squeeze it repeatedly for around fifteen to twenty minutes. One can tell dough is kneaded well, when it appears into a silky textured ball.

Coat the dough

While in this form, it is time to coat is with a layer of olive oil. Next, the coated dough is placed on the large bowl of mixing, which is as well smeared with olive oil.

Panning the dough

The next step is panning the well-prepared dough of pizza. Many people, who have prepared pizza as challenging, because spreading the dough on the pan determines its eventual shape, have identified this step.

Methods of spreading pizza

In order to get this right, pizza makers have introduced various methods one can use to suit one’s need. Some of the well-known ways include hand tossing pizza, pizza dough pressing, and pizza dough pressing, and lastly pin rolling pizza among others.

Making pizza sauce

After making the pizza, the next step is making a pizza sauce. While at home, it is advisable to use tomato sauce, which has limited amounts of basil and oregano. Some people who eat pizza are even comfortable taking it with less tomato sauce.

Ingredients for a tomato sauce

Notably, tomato sauce is easier to make for a person who is at home. The ingredients to produce a perfect tomato sauce include butter, basil, canned Italian tomatoes, minced yellow onions, black pepper, minced garlic, salt, tomato puree, and olive oil.

Making a tomato sauce

The first step involves melting olive oil with butter in a large oven. Gradually, sauté the onion and garlic. Next, add salt, tomatoes, puree, basil, oregano, and pepper, and leave it to boil. The mixture is then covered and left to keep bubbling for close to two hours. While the mixture is still bubbling, keep stirring. Tomatoes should be crushed using a smasher, and the process should continue until the sauce attains a texture of a soup.

Cooling the sauce

Next, the sauce is put aside in order to cool down, prior to smearing it on the pizza. In the event, the cooling process is not fast, it is advisable to place it in a fridge.

Topping the pizza

Next is the process of pizza topping, which is done by spreading the sauce on the dough surface. While smearing the sauce, a margin should be left on the outer part of the dough in order to allow the crust to crisp and rise easily. Adding the pizza top should be done according to one’s preference.

Baking the pizza

The last step involves baking the pizza. The oven should be heated in advance to 450 0 F for around fifteen to twenty minutes. Following the preheating, the pizza should be placed on the center of the oven. The pan should be placed in such a way that, enough room for circulation of air is allowed. The pizza maker should ensure baking continues at that temperature for almost twenty minutes. Signs to show that the pizza is cooked include cheese melting and beginning to turn brown. In addition, the edge of the crust is brown, and at this stage, one should turn it to confirm the bottom side is equally brown.

Pizza ready

If the afore-mentioned signs are witnessed, the pizza is cooked and ready for consumption.

Evidently, preparation of pizza is a tedious process, and if not followed correctly, one may end up producing a low quality product. Therefore, it advisable for pizza makers to prepare in advance and ensure all the ingredients is in place, to ensure a good product.
