New Procedure for Thesis and Dissertation Format Checking

Beginning fall of 2024 the library's role in the thesis and dissertation process will be the same as with any other papers which you write during your time as a student here. we can help you find background research, develop your research question, organize your writing, and publish your completed work., all the specific requirements, deadlines, defense, and checks will be done within your department and/or the graduate studies office., introduction.

The first step to any research is to find out what questions remain to be answered.

We have all heard the quote from Isaac Newton about standing on the shoulders of giants. It really is true!  This really is the goal of academic research. We want to be able to take in what has already happened and then go farther.  To do that you have to find the existent research. Good research will always spark more questions and the process will start all over again.

Thesis or Dissertation writing can seem like a very daunting task but we are here to help.

Your librarian is available to help you find the background research needed to determine areas where you can contribute to your field. The questions you form while conducting background research on your topic can spark the curiosity that will carry you through your capstone and into your career as a researcher.

Dissertation Formatting Workshop Slides

The  Master's Thesis Page from CECS   - contains the policies, procedures, and formatting guidelines you will need to refer to based on your specific degree.

Before submitting your thesis for your format check you will need to have created your ORCID  account. You will need to include this ID number on the copyright page of your work as well as on the submission form so that it can populate the metadata in our institutional repository Deep Blue , where your final approved document will be stored.

If you would like to request an embargo to delay the release of your thesis to public searching, you will need to indicate that on your submission form and also complete and attach the proper form. The form and other information can be found on the  Thesis Release and Embargo Procedures   page.

This link is for the Thesis Formatting Guidelines last updated in 2016. Check the Graduate Studies webpage to ensure you are using the most current guidelines.

This is the checklist we will use to review your thesis to ensure proper formatting before it is accepted for deposit in Deep Blue.

Dissertations

The  Doctorial Dissertations Page from CECS  - contains the policies, procedures, and formatting guidelines you will need to refer to based on your specific degree.

This is the link to the Dissertation Handbook . It includes a list of all the guidelines for formatting your dissertation near the end.

Doctoral Committee

Selection of a faculty advisor.

The student is normally assigned to a faculty advisor within two months of the beginning of the student’s first term in the department. Faculty make presentations on research topics during the early weeks of ChE 595. Each student is asked to meet personally with four faculty members and to rank-order preferences for available research projects.

Student/faculty assignments are made by the Graduate Program Chair taking into account both student preferences and faculty preferences and needs.

If your chair doesn’t have a ChE appointment

If the dissertation chair does not have an appointment in the Department of Chemical Engineering, the student is required to have a co-chair in Chemical Engineering on the dissertation committee.  The ChE co-chair serves as the Doctoral Standards Committee Representative at the Thesis Proposal Exam, Data Meeting, and Defense and as one of the two required faculty members from ChE on the dissertation panel.  The co-chair position does not imply co-advising (beyond the role of a thesis committee member) or a financial commitment, but rather the co-chair serves as the official ChE representative on the committee.

Approval of the Dissertation Topic

If the dissertation research differs from the previously passed Thesis Proposal Exam proposal and Project Summary page (formerly Preliminary Examination), that one-page summary should be re-submitted as the dissertation topic proposal.

Role of the Doctoral Committee

The Doctoral Committee consists of at least four graduate faculty members, at least two of whom are from the Chemical Engineering Department, (including the faculty advisor, who serves as Chair of the Committee), and at least one of whom must be from outside the department (designated the “Outside Member”). Formation of Doctoral Committee

Nominations for dissertation committee service are subject to  Rackham Doctoral Degree guidelines .

The Committee’s role is principally to advise the student in the research activity and to uphold departmental and University standards for the conduct of doctoral research.

Each doctoral student should meet with his or her committee as a whole at least once per year, to insure that satisfactory progress is being made toward the PhD degree.

A PhD student who is near the completion of his/her PhD research and is ready to start writing should hold a data meeting with his/her dissertation committee. At this meeting, the dissertation committee is expected to approve the ending of research and recommend that the student begin writing the dissertation. This is typically done two to three months before the proposed dissertation defense date. The student is responsible for submitting the Data Meeting Form within one week after the data meeting to the ChE graduate program office.

In addition to the department data meeting, students are required to register online for a  pre-defense review  with the Rackham Graduate School Office of Records and Dissertations (OARD) at least three weeks prior to the oral defense.

PhD Dissertation and Oral Defense

The Doctoral Committee approves the student’s request to end the dissertation research effort and to write the dissertation describing the research results.

When the dissertation has been written and the format approved by the Rackham Graduate School, it is distributed to members of the Committee, who then conduct the final oral examination (typically ten days to two weeks later). Once the thesis is successfully defended and approved by the committee, the PhD degree is granted at the following commencement.

monét cooper is a 2024-2025 recipient of the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research*

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) has awarded monét cooper a  2024-2025 Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research . The selection committee was impressed by cooper’s scholarly achievements, the quality of her proposed research, and her potential to contribute to education research. Cooper’s dissertation is titled, “Between Freedom and Capture: Quare Youths’ Literacies of Everyday Aliveness in the Un/care of School.”

In a highly selective process, AERA’s Minority Dissertation Fellowship Program awards fellowships to members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in education research, and offers mentoring and guidance toward the completion of their doctoral studies. An important aim of the fellowship is to enhance the racial and ethnic diversity of faculty, scholars, and researchers across the education research field.

All new Minority Dissertation Fellows are in the final stages of their dissertation studies across a broad range of education research topics, such as LGBTQ issues in schools, pedagogy, and undocumented students in college. Many of these studies focus on minoritized racial and ethnic groups in education and schools. The awardees frame their research around a range of disciplines and subfields of education research, including higher education, psychometrics, and psychology.
