How to Get a Raid Assignment in Modern Warfare 2

If you want to take part in Call of Duty’s first-ever Raid, you’ll need to get your hands on a Raid Assignment in Modern Warfare 2.

MW2 finally has its long-awaited Season 1 Reloaded update and the new patch brings a ton of new, exciting content to the game.

Not only are we finally getting a major balance patch to both Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer, as well as new guns, a new map, and more, Spec Ops fans are in for a treat.

Raids are the latest and greatest addition to the COD franchise, continuing the story of the MW2 Campaign with a challenging 3-player mission.

How to Get a Raid Assignment in MW2

There are 3 ways to get a Raid Assignment in MW2 in Season 1 Reloaded:

• Complete a designated Daily Challenge in Multiplayer or Spec Ops
• Place in the top 20 in any Warzone 2 Battle Royale playlist
• Extract at least $30,000 using the final extract helicopter in DMZ

Players can complete any one of the tasks listed above to be granted a Raid Assignment. This makes that user eligible to participate in a Raid of their choice (right now, only Atomgrad will be available) for a full week.

Easiest Way to Get a Raid Assignment

The easiest way to get a Raid Assignment in Modern Warfare 2 is by completing the designated Daily Challenge in Spec Ops or Multiplayer, depending on which is easier that day.

The advantage of Spec Ops is that you can quickly complete the mission either alone or with a friend, removing all outside interference from other players.

That said, the easier Modern Warfare 2 Daily Challenges could be completed in a single game of online matchmaking – so go with whatever challenge is easier for that day.

Alternatively, dropping into a game of Warzone Solos and hiding until you hit the top 20 shouldn’t be too difficult either!

Do Raid Assignments Expire in MW2?

Yes, Raid Assignments that you earn will disappear one week after being assigned. That means that you’ll only have 7 days to complete your MW2 Raid before having to get a second Raid Assignment.

Does Every Player Need a Raid Assignment?

No, only a single player needs to have a Raid Assignment in order to take their party into a MW2 Raid. If you’ve completed the Raid Assignment requirements, your friends will not have to do the same to join you.

How to Access MW2 Raid Without a Raid Assignment

To get access to a Modern Warfare 2 Raid without earning a Raid Assignment for yourself, simply group up with a player who has already earned their Assignment for the week.

Players that have a Raid Assignment will be able to take any two players of their choice into Atomgrad with them – even without Assignments of their own!

Make sure you level up a Spec Ops Kit before heading into MW2 Raids ! You’ll need them at a high tier if you want to successfully complete the mission.

Raids have come to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, giving players the opportunity to complete these tough assignments in three-person operations. These operations will mix puzzles and combat, with new assignments released every season. Before you can jump into a raid, you need to unlock a Raid Assignment on your character. Here’s what you need to know about how you can get a Raid Assignment in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Where to find a Raid Assignment in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

A Raid Assignment is essentially your Raid Key to unlocking this operation. If you don’t have one, you must earn it by playing one of three game modes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s online modes. We recommend picking a game mode you’re most comfortable with or can work through with a group of friends.

The three online game modes each have different criteria. These are the three game modes and how you can earn your Raid Assignment by playing them.

• Complete a specific Daily Challenge in Multiplayer or Special Ops
• Place within the two 20 in a Warzone 2.0 battle Royale Playlist
• While playing DMZ, use the exfil helicopter with at least $30,000 in Cash

Depending on your gameplay preferences, you may want to jump into a Warzone 2.0 playlist game or go through DMZ. The daily challenge for Multiplayer or Special Ops might be doable, but it could easily be the toughest for players to earn.

When you receive your Raid Assignment, you can jump into any available raids in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. One will appear in each game season for the first five seasons, creating an episodic arc.

Before participating in the First Special Ops Raid called Atomgrad, you must earn a Raid Assignment by completing specific objectives. Here are the three ways you can get a Raid Assignment in COD Modern Warfare 2:

• Complete a specific Daily Challenge either in Multiplayer or Special Ops
• Place within the top 20 in any Warzone 2.0 Battle Royale Playlist
• In DMZ , use the final extract helicopter with at least 30,000 in Cash.

You and the squad you bring with you can access the new raid for one week after earning the Raid Assignment.

Tips and Tricks on Getting a Raid Assignment in COD Modern Warfare 2

The developers have provided us with tips and tricks on easily earning a raid assignment with the above methods. You first want to warm up with Special Ops missions as much as possible so you can learn how enemy agents function, how Special Ops kits work and earn the rewards that come with completing them. The second thing you want to do is to tier up your kits because raids are part of Special Ops which means they use the Kit system. High-Tier kits provide additional passives and active benefits, increasing your chances of survival and overall progression of the Atomgrad raid.

How to get into the first-ever Call od Duty Raid!

For the first time ever, Call of Duty is introducing a co-op Raid with Season 1 Reloaded in Modern Warfare 2 . This multi-stage event known as Atomgrad will see players continue the story campaign and will set up the narrative of the game’s season of content going forward. This Raid cannot simply be selected and played, however, as it requires a certain item to be able to play. This guide will tell players how to gain access to the Atomgrad Raid in Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 .

How To Gain Access To The Atomgrad Raid in Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

In order to gain access to the Atomgrad Raid as well as any future Raids released for Modern Warfare 2 , players will need to gain access to something called a Raid Assignment. This item is earned through completing one of four certain tasks. Luckily, not every player in your party must have a Raid Assignment in order to play the Raid, only one member of the team needs it for you to play. The four tasks that you can complete to gain a Raid Assignment are completing specific Daily Challenges in either multiplayer or Spec Ops, placing in the top 20 of any playlist in Warzone 2.0 , or extracting in the final helicopter from the DMZ with $30,000.

Once players get this Raid Assignment, they will be able to play the Raid for an entire week. This means that you can replay the Raid as many times as you want to get different rewards for a full 7 days after using your Raid Assignment. After that week is up, all you have to do is get another Raid Assignment to gain access to the Raid for another full week.

The Modern Warfare 2 Raid Rewards are here, and they're the only way to get access to the Gaz Operator skin unless you purchase the Raid Bundle from the Store. As well as unlocking Gaz and Veteran difficulty the first time you finish Atomgrad Episode 1, you'll also receive a random item from the seven available in the Raid loot pool, which range from a handy unique weapon blueprint to a somewhat less useful loading screen. Once you know how to start the Modern Warfare 2 Raid by cashing in a Raid Assignment, the next thing you'll want to find out is the prize for getting through to the finish, so we've got the lowdown on all of the Modern Warfare 2 Raid Rewards that can be claimed.

All Modern Warfare 2 Raid Rewards available

The Modern Warfare 2 Raid Rewards you receive for completing Atomgrad Episode 1 are a combination of a guaranteed item the first time you beat it on Normal and Veteran difficulties, plus a random item from a pool of seven items. This means you potentially need to run through the whole Raid seven times if you want to unlock everything, so you'll need to make a judgement call on whether that's worth your time once the full list of items is revealed.

Modern Warfare 2 Raid Rewards for completing Atomgrad Episode 1

• Gaz: Convoy skin (guaranteed for completing on Normal difficulty)
• Veteran Raid difficulty unlocked (after completing on Normal difficulty)
• The Punchline Bryson 800 Weapon blueprint (guaranteed for completing on Veteran difficulty)
• Plus a random item from the seven in the Raid loot pool, including:
• Forest Price player card
• Gaz's Gaze player card
• Eye on the Prize emblem
• Graphic Gaz loading screen
• Graphic Price loading screen
• Enforcer Kastov 762 weapon blueprint

One Modern Warfare 2 Raid Reward we've seen already is the 'Punchline' weapon blueprint, pictured above, which is awarded for completing Atomgrad on Veteran difficulty. It apparently has Gaz's name on it, though the reaction so far has been divided over whether this reward is suitable enough for completing such a difficult challenge in Modern Warfare 2 .

If you want to get access to Gaz as an Operator without completing the Raid, there's also the Raid Bundle available on the Store for 1,800 COD Points. This gives you access to the following items, which are separate from the Modern Warfare 2 Raid Rewards you unlock through completion:

Modern Warfare 2 is surely the most successful game made in the COD franchise. The game is being enjoyed by millions of players all across the globe. With the launch of Warzone 2 on the side, Season 1 has begun for both the newest COD titles. Along with DMZ mode , there are a few other game modes that are more than enough to keep you entertained for hours. The newest Atomgrad mode is one such new mode in the game. However, the mode can not be accessed unless you have a Raid Assignment in MW2. How to Get Raid Assignment in MW2

Consider Raid Assignment as a key or pass that is required to access the Atomgrad mode. Although, there are 3 ways through which you can obtain it. Take a look at the below steps to know how to get the Raid Assignment in MW2.

• You can get a Raid Assignment by completing the Daily Challenges in Multiplayer mode or Spec Ops mode.
• Further, you can also obtain a Raid Assignment by exfilling through the final chopper with 30K cash in DMZ mode . For those who don’t know, the final chopper appears in the final zone and is one of the hardest extraction.
• Last but not least, you can get a Raid Assignment by getting into the top 20 teams in any mode of the Battle Royale playlist of Warzone 2.0 . It is better to play the Mini BR Trios mode as it ends quickly. All you have to do is wait for a while until you have made it to the top 20. It will only take a few seconds or minutes for you to enter the top 20 positions.

Once you have completed any one of the above requirements, you will get the Raid Assignment in MW2. Later, you can click on the Atomgrad mode and select your two squad members to enjoy the game.

How to Earn Raid Assignments in MW2 & Warzone 2

Atomgrad Episode One has officially kicked off with the release of Season 1 Reloaded . Call of Duty is no stranger to mid-season updates, but this is the first time we have ever seen Raids in a mode like Spec Ops, and before you can get started, you’re going to need some Raid Assignments.

Considering the gameplay behind this new mode has remained hidden, many of the requirements beforehand will be brand new for any players. Before you can even jump into the new Spec Ops mode, you’ll be told about Raid Assignments. We’re here to help you get your hands on one and outline exactly how they are earned.

Modern Warfare 2 – How to Earn Raid Assignments

There are three ways that you can earn Raid Assignments in Modern Warfare 2 or Warzone 2, but each one can vary in difficulty depending on your luck. For those of you who like MW2 multiplayer, the daily challenges could be your best bet, but that also depends on the ones you get. Below you can find the list of methods for earning Raid Assignments according to the latest Call of Duty blog post .

• Complete a specific Daily Challenge either in Multiplayer or Special Ops.
• Place within the top 20 in any Warzone 2.0 Battle Royale Playlist.
• In DMZ, use the final exfil helicopter with at least $30,000 in Cash.

None of these challenges are nearly impossible, but they aren’t a walk in the park either. Daily challenges in Modern Warfare 2 usually consist of tasks such as earning three headshots with marksman rifles. You’ll save yourself some time and grief if you can jump into quickplay multiplayer.

Once you have a Raid Assignment earned, it will expire after one week, so make sure to use it while you can. Only one assignment is needed in your Raid party as well, so if all three of you have one, that’s three different completions you can get through at a time. Keep stacking up the assignments and walk away with all of the rewards that you can.

MW2 Raid Assignments: How to get

The MW2 Raid is an all-new mode that has been introduced in Season One Reloaded. However, to gain access to Raids in MW2, it’s not quite as simple as just selecting it from the home screen. Instead, you’ll have to earn your place in the Raid before tackling the twists and turns it holds.

What you need are MW2 Raid Assignments and below, we’ll be revealing all on how to get Raid Assignments in MW2 so that you can unlock this brand new experience and gather your squad together to share the spoils of war. Let’s get into it.

How to get MW2 Raid Assignments

As previously stated, MW2 Raid Assignments are an absolute necessity if you want to be able to play this fresh experience. Thankfully, the developers haven’t made it a gruelling task to get them, contrary to that of what you might be experiencing if you’re going for a Warzone 2 Nuke.

Here are the three ways for how to get MW2 Assignments:

• Complete a specific Daily Challenge either in Multiplayer or Special Ops
• Place within the top 20 in any Warzone 2.0 Battle Royale Playlist
• In DMZ, use the final extract helicopter with at least $30,000 in Cash

Once you achieve one of the three above, you will have a Raid Assignment for one week and you’ll be allowed to bring in two other friends into your Raid for that duration. This means not all three of the squad will have to get a Raid Assignment, making your life that bit easier.

While this may seem like a bit of an annoying task to complete just to simply have access to another mode for one week only, it does encourage both yourself and other Call of Duty players around the globe to maybe try a mode that they haven’t.

Additionally, as the Raids are a type of ‘Special Ops’ mission, you’ll be able to carry over any kit that you will have picked up from there into the Raid, giving you a slight edge in the heat of battle, potentially saving your run.

GTA Online - How To Get The Train Key In The Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid

One of the missions in the Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid requires you to steal a train using a hidden key.

During the Breaking and Entering mission in the Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid in GTA Online, you are tasked with stealing a train so you can access the cartel's factory. This comes after you steal the hacking device from the Terrorbyte and the laptop. Before you're able to steal the train, you have to collect the train key, which is not immediately accessible when you arrive at the mission's location.

In the guide below, you can see where to get the train key and how to escape with the train so you can finally finish up the Breaking and Entering mission in the Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid.

Finding the train key

After stealing the laptop and the hacking device from Terrorbyte, you have to go to the train yard. Here, you'll come across several cartel members all guarding different parts of the area. You can choose to take out the guards silently or with aggressive force. In any case, the train key is dropped by a single cartel guard after you've killed them.

For me, that guard was sitting in the middle of the train yard near a small trailer and red shipping container. However, your mileage may vary depending on what approach you take with the guards. Whenever you do kill the guard with the train key, you'll see a green key icon appear on your map, indicating the key has been dropped. Go to the icon's location on your map and loot it off the ground.

Take out any remaining guards in the area and then head over to the blue train icon that's now appeared on the map.

Escaping with the train

Once you're at the train, go around to the right side of it and climb up the small ladder near the cockpit. You might have to attempt a few jumps to get up the ladder. Once you've made the jump, turn right and head into the cockpit, where you need to press your interact button to start driving the train.

At this point, Vincent comes over the radio and mentions you need to keep the train moving at all times. To do this, make sure you continually press and hold the forward move button on your controller/keyboard. You'll also need to use your new hacking device to hack the train tracks at various points along the journey.

Start by moving the train forward and you'll soon come across a red circle zone on your mini-map. When you're in the zone, a prompt will appear on your screen that says to "use the hacking device." Press the button the prompt indicates and the tracks will switch so the train can continue moving forward. You need to repeat this process a few more times before the mission is over.

Also along the route are cartel enemies that shoot at you in the cockpit and try to stop the train. As the driver of the train, you can still be shot and killed, but you can also use your sidearm to shoot back at the enemies. Simply keep shooting enemies while keeping your eyes on the mini-map to see when you need to hack another part of the track. You can also run over enemies and their vehicles rather easily if you need to.

Eventually, you'll go into a tunnel where the Breaking and Entering mission ends. Vincent calls you to congratulate you on your success and you'll respawn in a new area.

Trump hush money trial: A timeline of key events in the case

NEW YORK (AP) — The events at the center of former President Donald Trump’s hush money case date back almost two decades, with new dates coming to light as the trial plays out in a Manhattan courtroom. Here are the key moments in the case , as described in trial testimony and court documents:

January 2005: Trump marries his current wife, Melania.

September 2005: Trump is recorded bragging to “Access Hollywood” host Billy Bush about grabbing women’s genitals without asking for permission. The footage isn’t aired and doesn’t become public until October 2016.

June 2006: Former Playboy model Karen McDougal says this is when she first met Trump, after “The Apprentice” filmed at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. McDougal has alleged they went on to have a 10-month affair that ended in 2007, a claim Trump denies.

July 2006: Porn actor Stormy Daniels and Trump meet at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe. Daniels alleges that they have a sexual encounter, Trump denies the claim.

May 2011: Daniels shares her claim about the encounter in an interview with In Touch magazine, but the story is not published at the time. In October, Trump fixer Michael Cohen sends an email to the publication’s general counsel saying Trump would aggressively pursue legal action if the story was printed. It does not run until 2018.

June 16, 2015: Trump announces that he will seek the Republican nomination for president.

August 2015: Trump and Cohen meet at Trump Tower with David Pecker, then CEO of National Enquirer publisher American Media Inc, also known as AMI. According to Pecker’s testimony, he says at the meeting he will act as the “eyes and ears” of the campaign, notifying Cohen of claims being made about Trump so that the rights can be purchased and the stories quashed

October 2015: Pecker learns that a former Trump Tower doorman, Dino Sajudin, is trying to sell a story that Trump had fathered a child with an employee.

Nov. 15, 2015: The National Enquirer pays Sajudin $30,000 for the rights to the rumor. The tabloid concludes that the story was not true. The woman and Trump have denied the allegations.

July 19, 2016: Trump officially becomes the Republican presidential nominee at the party’s convention.

Aug. 5, 2016: AMI buys McDougal’s story about the affair she claims she had with Trump in 2006 and 2007. The company pays her $150,000, agrees to feature her on two magazine covers and to publish 100 magazine articles authored by her.

Sept. 6, 2016: Cohen records himself briefing Trump on the plan to buy McDougal’s story from AMI. Cohen says on the tape that he’s already spoken with the Trump Organization’s finance chief, Allen Weisselberg, on “how to set the whole thing up.”

Sept. 30, 2016: Cohen signs an agreement to buy the nondisclosure part of McDougal’s contract for $125,000 through a company called Resolution Consultants LLC.

Early October 2016: Pecker tells Cohen the deal for him to buy McDougal’s nondisclosure is off. Cohen never pays the $125,000. “I said to him that the agreement, the assignment deal is off. I am not going forward,” Pecker testified.

Oct. 7, 2016: The Washington Post publishes the 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape.

Oct. 8, 2016: Daniels’ representative tells the National Enquirer she’s willing to make on the record statements confirming a sexual encounter with Trump. Pecker and Howard connect Cohen with her lawyer, Keith Davidson. Over the next few days, Cohen negotiates a $130,000 deal to acquire the rights to Daniels’ story and keep her quiet.

Oct. 27, 2016: Cohen wires payment to Davidson’s law firm using a shell corporation, Essential Consultants LLC. The next day, Daniels signs a confidential settlement and nondisclosure agreement. The agreement uses the pseudonyms Peggy Peterson for Daniels and David Dennison for Trump.

Nov. 4, 2016: The Wall Street Journal publishes a story revealing McDougal’s deal with the Enquirer’s parent company, AMI. The story also mentions Daniels and says she had been in talks with a TV network to tell her story but cut off negotiations. Trump campaign spokesperson Hope Hicks denies Trump had a relationship with either woman and says of the McDougal deal: “We have no knowledge of any of this.”

Nov. 9, 2016: Trump is elected president.

Jan. 20, 2017: Trump is sworn in as president.

January 2017: Cohen seeks reimbursement from the Trump Organization for his $130,000 payment to Daniels as well as an additional $50,000 for unrelated campaign “tech services.” Cohen provides company executives with a copy of a bank statement reflecting the wire transfer to Davidson.

Testifying in court , former Trump Organization controller Jeffrey McConney recalled meeting with the company’s longtime Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg, who comes up with a plan to pay Cohen the money he’s owed, adding in a $60,000 bonus and extra funds to cover taxes he’ll owe by declaring the money as income, a total of $420,000.

Jan. 27, 2017: Cohen’s last day as a full-time Trump Organization employee, according to McConney’s testimony. Cohen begins holding himself out as Trump’s “personal attorney.”

Feb. 14, 2017: Cohen emails an invoice to McConney seeking payment “pursuant to the retainer agreement” for services rendered for January and February 2017. The invoice requested payment in the amount of $35,000 for each of those two months — the first two monthly installments of his repayment plan.

Weisselberg approves the payments and McConney sends the invoice to an accounts payable supervisor with the instructions: “Post to legal expenses. Put ‘retainer for the months of January and February 2017’ in the description.”

The United Nations says it has suspended food distribution in the southern Gaza city of Rafah due to lack of supplies and insecurity

CAIRO — The United Nations suspended food distribution in the southern Gaza city of Rafah on Tuesday due to a lack of supplies and an untenable security situation caused by Israel’s expanding military operation . The U.N. warned that humanitarian operations across the territory were nearing collapse.

A senior United States official said Israel has addressed many of the Biden administration’s concerns about a full-scale ground invasion of Rafah aimed at rooting out Hamas fighters there. U.S. President Joe Biden had previously opposed a total military assault on a city filled with displaced civilians if plans did not prioritize the safety of innocent Palestinians. The U.S. official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

The official said the administration stopped short of greenlighting the Israeli invasion plan, but said Israeli officials’ changes to the planning suggested they were taking the American administration’s concerns seriously.

Over the past two weeks, hundreds of thousands of people have fled Rafah in a chaotic exodus , seeking shelter in new tent camps or crowding into areas already devastated by previous Israeli offensives. Some 400,000 people are believed to still be in Rafah after around 900,000 rushed to escape, according to COGAT, the Israeli military office in charge of Palestinian civilian affairs.

Getting aid to displaced civilians has been hampered by closed and chaotic land crossings, as well as problems plaguing the U.S. military’s new floating pier meant to provide an alternative sea route for aid into Gaza. Over the weekend, hungry Palestinians took aid from a U.N. vehicle convoy coming from the pier, and the U.N. said since then it had been unable to receive trucks there.

Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters in Washington that for the past few days, forward movement of aid from the pier was paused but it resumed Tuesday. There was no confirmation from the U.N.

The U.N.’s World Food Program said it was running out of food for central Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of people are now living.

“Humanitarian operations in Gaza are near collapse,” said Abeer Etefa, a WFP spokesperson. If food and other supplies don’t resume entering Gaza “in massive quantities, famine-like conditions will spread,” she said.

The warning came as Israel seeks to contain the international fallout from a request at the world’s top war crimes court for arrest warrants targeting both Israeli and Hamas leaders. The move garnered support from three European countries, including Israel’s key ally France.

“Use of starvation as a method of warfare” was among the accusations against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant by the chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court — charges they and other Israeli officials angrily deny. The prosecutor accused three Hamas leaders of war crimes over killings of civilians in the group’s Oct. 7 attack.

The U.N says some 1.1 million people in Gaza — nearly half the population — face catastrophic levels of hunger and that the territory is on the brink of famine. Throughout the war, Rafah has been filled with scenes of hungry children holding out pots and plastic containers at makeshift soup kitchens, with many families reduced to eating only one meal a day.

The humanitarian crisis deepened after Israeli forces pushed into Rafah on May 6. Tanks and troops seized the vital Rafah crossing into Egypt, and it’s been closed ever since. After May 10, only about three dozen trucks made it into Gaza via the nearby Kerem Shalom crossing from Israel because fighting made it dangerous for aid workers to reach it, the U.N. says.

Israel insists it puts no restriction on the number of trucks entering Gaza. COGAT said 450 trucks entered Tuesday from its side to Kerem Shalom and a small crossing in northern Gaza. It said more than 650 trucks are waiting on the Gaza side of Kerem Shalom to be retrieved, blaming “lack of logistical capabilities and manpower gaps” among aid groups.

For months, the U.N. has warned that an Israeli assault on Rafah could wreck the effort to get food, medicine and other supplies to Palestinians across Gaza.

Asked about the ramifications of suspending aid, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said simply: “People don’t eat.”

Etefa said the WFP was still passing out hot meals and “limited distributions” of reduced food packages in central Gaza, but “food parcel stocks will run out within days,” she said.

The U.S. touted the $320 million pier project as a route for accelerated deliveries . The first 10 trucks rolled off a ship onto the pier on Friday and were taken to a WFP warehouse. However, a second convoy on Saturday was met by Palestinian crowds who removed all the food from 11 trucks, and only five truckloads made it to the warehouse, Etefa said.

No further deliveries came from the pier Sunday or Monday, Etefa said.

“The responsibility of ensuring aid reaches those in need does not end at the crossings and other points of entry into Gaza — it extends throughout Gaza itself,” she said.

At the same time, battles have escalated in northern Gaza as Israeli troops conduct operations against Hamas fighters, who the military says regrouped in areas already captured in offensives months ago.

One of the main hospitals still operating in the north, Kamal Adwan, was forced to evacuate after it was “targeted” by Israeli troops, the Gaza Health Ministry said. Around 150 staff and dozens of patients fled the facility, including intensive care patients and infants in incubators “under fire from shelling,” it said. The Israeli military did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

The nearby Awda hospital has been surrounded by troops the past three days, and an artillery shell hit its fifth floor, the hospital administration said Tuesday. A day earlier, the international medical aid group Doctors Without Borders said Awda had run out of drinking water.

The war between began on Oct. 7, when Hamas-led militants crossed into Israel and killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 250 hostage. ICC prosecutor Karim Khan accused Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh of crimes against humanity, including extermination, murder and sexual violence.

Israel responded to the Oct. 7 with an offensive that has laid waste to Gaza and killed more than 35,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between noncombatants and fighters in its count.

Monday’s call by Khan for arrest warrants deepens Israel’s global isolation at a time when it is facing growing criticism from even its closest allies over the war. France, Belgium, and Slovenia each said they backed Khan’s decision.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz headed to France on Tuesday in response, urging it to “declare loud and clear” that the request for warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant “is unacceptable to you and to the French government.”

His meetings there could set the tone for how countries navigate the warrants — if they are eventually issued — and whether they could pose a threat to Israeli leaders. A panel of three ICC judges will decide whether to issue the arrest warrants and allow a case to proceed. The judges typically take two months to make such decisions.

Israel still has the support of its top ally, the United States, as well as other Western countries that spoke out against the decision. But if the warrants are issued, they could complicate international travel for Netanyahu and his defense minister, even if they do not face any immediate risk of prosecution because Israel itself is not a member of the court .

Among the 150,000 soldiers who landed on and fought across the hostile beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, were 1,000 members of a new, specially trained unit – the U.S. Army Rangers.

Most of them fought across the German beachfront defenses, supported by nearly 7,000 naval vessels and 11,000 Allied aircraft . More than 200 Rangers fought vertically – up the sheer cliff face of Pointe du Hoc, a craggy outcropping overlooking the two American landing beaches – in an effort to capture what was thought to be a key location of German artillery.

As a military historian of what I call the American Ranger tradition, I’ve traced this martial phenomenon from the colonial period to the 21st century. Their pathway to Normandy and their exploits that fateful morning represent a core component of the modern U.S. Army’s culture and evolution in the decades since.

Ranger rebirth

The idea for the U.S. Army Rangers was inspired by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s idea for what he called a “butcher and bolt” force – small teams that would conduct surprise attacks, kill or destroy key enemy targets, and escape undetected. The Commandos, as these British units were called, conducted high-profile and daring raids into occupied Europe from 1940 to the end of the war. Their sudden and shocking assaults along the French and Norwegian coastlines provided a boost in British morale during the dark early days of the war.

In spring 1942, Gen. George C. Marshall, the U.S. Army’s chief of staff, agreed to send a small detachment of Americans to train with the British commandos to gain combat experience. These American troops were then supposed to be sent to units across the United States’ rapidly growing army to share their expertise as new recruits prepared to go to war.

Gen. Lucian Truscott Jr., who had made the initial pitch to Marshall, believed the term “commando” was too British and instead argued that these men should be called “Rangers.” Truscott recalled the tenacity, flexibility and aggressive nature of colonial forces like Rogers’ Rangers , famous for daring raids during the French and Indian War in the 1750s and 1760s. Truscott believed that “ few words have a more glamorous connotation in American military history ” than the word “ranger.”

The 1st Ranger Battalion was trained by the British Commandos . A select few of them joined the British and Canadians in an August 1942 raid across the English Channel into Dieppe, France, which resulted in catastrophic losses and hard-learned lessons for the eventual landings at Normandy. Those Rangers were the first U.S. troops to fight in Europe during World War II.

In November 1942, the 1st Ranger Battalion took part in Operation Torch , the Allied invasion of northern Africa. They captured the port town of Arzew, Algeria , without firing a shot during the invasion’s opening hours. They conducted daring nighttime raids, like the one on the Italian military outpost at the Sened Station in Tunisia, and were essential to Gen. George Patton’s breakout at Tunisia’s Djebel el Ank in 1943 .

The unit was so successful that the Army created additional Ranger battalions for the invasions of Italy and France, which were still being planned and would be undertaken in 1943 and 1944, respectively.

As these new battalions were forming and training, two in Africa and two in Tennessee , there was some confusion among Army commanders about how they would be used in combat. Were they specialized raiding forces like the commandos, or elite infantry meant to spearhead beach landings and other large-scale offensives? The 1st Rangers had done both in Africa, and these new Rangers would be asked to do so as well.

These new Ranger battalions were less heavily armed than their conventional counterparts. While they fit under the same organizational framework, they lacked the heavier weapons and internal artillery capabilities of a standard American infantry battalion.

As the Allied campaign pushed across northern Africa and into Italy, the Rangers found themselves consistently on the front lines of the Allied advance, where they suffered disastrous casualties fighting in prolonged conventional battles they were neither designed nor equipped for.

Rangers for D-Day

Like the rest of the D-Day force, the Rangers prepared for the operation without knowing when or where it would take place.

The newly organized 2nd and 5th Ranger battalions arrived in England in January 1944 and, alongside the more than 2 million other Allied soldiers on the British Isles, started preparing for the Normandy landings. The Rangers completed the murderous Commando training course in Scotland, famous for its grueling hill runs and use of live ammunition, spent weeks practicing amphibious landings along the English coastline, and scaled the towering seaside cliffs near Swanage more times than they could count .

On the fateful morning of the Normandy landings, the Ranger battalions were split into three groups with two distinct assignments .

Task Force A, three companies led by Lt. Col. James Rudder, was assigned the most difficult mission: Pointe du Hoc. Using rocket-propelled grappling guns, rope and specialty fire ladders, the Rangers needed to climb 90 feet of sheer rock face under German fire, take the cliff top and destroy a group of 155 mm German guns overlooking the landing beaches.

Task Forces B and C, the remaining Rangers, were insurance. Depending on what happened at the cliffs, these Rangers had to land and fight across Omaha Beach and either rescue a faltering cliff assault or support the 29th Infantry Division in clearing the beach and taking the critical town of Vierville.

The fight at Pointe du Hoc

Rudder’s Task Force A had a rough start: A wrong turn in their landing craft put them 30 minutes behind schedule. The 225 Rangers finally started their climb well after sunrise and were met with intense German fire from above. Many of the first men to reach the top only did so with their hands and knives – their ropes had been cut.

But 30 minutes after they started climbing, the Rangers had reached the craggy and blasted top of Pointe du Hoc. Numbering barely 70, they found no functional German guns, which had either been destroyed in pre-invasion bombardments or moved by the Germans just days before.

Landing on Omaha Beach

By the time the 800-plus Rangers of Task Forces B and C landed on Omaha Beach, they had not yet heard from the delayed cliff assault team amid the chaos of the morning’s fight.

Within minutes, concentrated German machine gun fire devastated the men struggling up the beach. Nearly half of Lt. Col. Max Schneider’s force were killed or wounded as they made their way onto the beach. The rest hid behind a low seawall. Brig. Gen. Norman Cota approached the gathered troops. After a short and heated discussion with Schneider, the Rangers heard Cota yell something about needing to get troops off the exposed beach.

His order became the current 75th Ranger Regiment’s motto: “ Rangers, Lead the Way !” Using explosives specially designed for clearing obstacles , the Rangers cleared a pathway through the German barbed wire, and the assault up the beach began anew.

Famously reenacted by Tom Hanks and his fellow on-screen Rangers in 1998’s World War II epic “Saving Private Ryan,” the Ranger attack kick-started one of the first major breakthroughs of the morning. Before long, American soldiers were face to face with German defenders and opening large gaps in the defenses on their way to taking the beach and pushing inland.

A few among many

Like most of the troops on D-Day, the men of the 2nd and 5th Rangers experienced combat for the first time on those beaches and cliffsides. They paid a heavy price for the Allied victory: Nearly 400 of the original 1,000 Rangers who set out for Normandy were killed, wounded or missing. Overall, 4,000-plus Allied soldiers were killed on the day of the invasion, with 5,000 more wounded.

The Rangers were a small part of the overall operation, but they epitomize the strength, adaptability and determination of every service member who stepped foot on those beaches, piloted those landing craft, flew air support or toiled on an off-shore warship.

Four decades after D-Day, U.S. President Ronald Reagan visited Pointe du Hoc and paid his respects to the 62 surviving members of the 2nd Rangers who had climbed the cliffs. He honored them – and every other young man who stormed the beaches of Normandy :

“These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war.”
