Book review: when entrepreneurs make it happen and turn failure into success.
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you made a mistake, and it felt like the end of the world? Or have you failed at something you thought was going to be a surefire success? If you have, then you know how frustrating and disheartening it can be. But did you know that failure is not the end, but rather a chance to learn and grow? This is what Maria Hatzistefanis , founder of Rodial and NIP+FAB beauty brands , shares in her book, “ How to Make It Happen: Turning Failure into Success ”. In this book, Hatzistefanis takes readers through her journey of turning setbacks into opportunities and achieving success. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn from their mistakes, grow as a person, and ultimately achieve their goals.
The first chapter of this book is titled “ Fail Forward ”. In this chapter, Hatzistefanis highlights the importance of seeing failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. She shares how she faced numerous setbacks in her journey to launching her beauty brands but never gave up. Hatzistefanis encourages readers not to fear failure but to embrace it and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow. She also reminds readers that no one is immune to failure and that it is an essential part of the journey to success.
Hatzistefanis emphasizes the power of resilience by sharing her story of building a successful business, despite facing many obstacles along the way. She talks about her early struggles and the importance of focus and perseverance when faced with difficult challenges. One of the most important lessons from this chapter is that resilience is a key trait for success. Hatzistefanis proves that, with hard work and persistence, any obstacle can be overcome.
The next section of the book focuses on the importance of taking risks. Hatzistefanis discusses how taking risks is a necessary part of starting and running a successful business. However, she cautions readers not to take reckless risks. Instead, she shares how to evaluate risks, make informed decisions, and remain resilient when things don’t go as planned. Hatzistefanis also reminds readers to celebrate their successes along the way, no matter how small they may be.
The book’s final section is titled “Winning Ways” and focuses on the importance of networking, building relationships, and giving back. Hatzistefanis shares her insights on how to create a supportive network of people who will help guide you through your journey of success. She emphasizes the value of forming relationships with like-minded individuals who share your values and goals. Hatzistefanis also discusses the importance of giving back to the community and how it can be a rewarding way to enhance your own personal and professional growth.
Conclusion:
Overall, “How to Make It Happen: Turning Failure into Success” is a must-read for business owners , entrepreneurs , and anyone who wants to learn how to turn setbacks into opportunities for growth and success. Through her own personal journey to success, Hatzistefanis shares valuable insights on how to build resilience, take risks, and create a supportive network of people to help you achieve your goals. How to Make Shit Happen- Sean Whalen
Overall rating: 4/5
This book was a super quick and short read. I have just recently started making time to read self-help and self-care books, and picked this one up on a friend’s recommendation. Personally, I really enjoyed the book. In talking to a few people, I think this is one of those books where you’ll either love it or you’ll hate it. Basically, take it at face value. If you want one of those self-help books you can really dive into and analyze – this probably isn’t the one you’re looking for. This book is really straight forward, and the author is really quite blunt. He basically says own up to your problems and to your shit, and do the work needed to overcome them – that’s all there is to it.
That is what I enjoyed about this book, however. Most self-help books I’ve read so far (I haven’t read many in the grand scheme of self-help books), you really have to sit and analyze. You have to really think about, and really digest them. Sean Whalen just tells you what he did to get out of his funk, and tells you his method on, quite frankly, ‘How to Make Shit Happen’. Don’t get me wrong, it is a quick read, (I read it in one sitting), but I still sat there and took tedious notes and marked the crap out of a book. It held some good points worth noting, even in the short (large font) pages.
The message really isn’t sugar coated, and the book did contain some language to get the point across, but I think that kind of helps put things into perspective a little bit. Sometimes sugar coating things isn’t always helpful. Whalen talks about how he uses a method to break life down into four major aspects – CORE 4 – and then goes on to give you steps to reach your goals for each area. Most importantly, do something every day, even if it’s small, that address these four key aspects of your life- which are Power, Passion, Purpose, and Production. Power refers to body(health), passion as in your relationships, purpose refers to your mind, and production refers to business (maybe school, work, or something of that nature). Whalen talks about how everything you do, daily, fits in these categories and you can plan your day with those aspects of life in mind, and contribute to them daily, and watch yourself reach bigger goals in the long run. He doesn’t sell these huge life changing plans and goal setting techniques, but is a firm believer of planning out your day the night before, having a ‘morning’ ritual, and refers to this CORE4 idea. He says if you make you are taking care of these important life aspects you will create an overall better life for yourself and never be afraid to seek out help when needed. Create daily habits, and take immediate action.
Overall, it really isn’t your typical self-help book. No self-help book really is a perfect, cure everything, best advice out there book. It really is all your opinion, bias, and your views that play into each one, as you read them. You are going to get what you want out of it, honestly. There are some grammatical errors throughout the book (it is self-published, fyi), and some may find that the information presented is quite obvious, don’t like the author’s fuck off approach, and feel it is not worth the read. Personally, I found it to the point, a refresher from the typical self-help/advice book, plus there was some humor in it, and I really found CORE 4 very helpful. I think it’s a 4 out of 5, and do recommend reading the book. It’s only about 80 pages after all; that only takes an hour of your time, and you may love it! I did. (Plus, it’s cheap!)

The book is geared heavily towards "making it happen" in terms of starting a business and entrepreneurship, which doesn't neatly translate to the music industry, but it was still helpful. I wouldn't pin it as a must-read, but is good for anyone looking to get inspiration on starting their business.
