How to make it happen by Maria Hatzistefanis

Book review: How to make it happen by Maria Hatzistefanis

“Failure and rejection are two subjects that are very close to my heart. I have faced rejection time after time in my career. And I want to talk openly about this as I feel that very few people admit they’ve been rejected.”

– Maria Hatzistefanis,

How to Make it Happen, from the chapter titled: They want you to quit. Don’t.

This book offers a very candid view behind the scenes of Rodial and Nip+Fab’s founder Maria Hatzistefanis journey and some of the challenges she has faced and how she has overcome them. How she has stayed motivated from working from small a backroom office in her house to how she handles days in her office when everything just goes sideways at once.

Who is this book for?

Anyone who is looking for inspiration and motivation, delivered with a healthy dose of honesty. Who wants to learn more from someone who has been through 19 years of hard work to get where she is today. Starting a beauty brand with no previous experience from the beauty business. In terms of the audience, I would say that the book definitely is aimed towards new business owners or those who dream about venturing out on their own. However, it does not make this any less of a valuable read for anyone who is experienced. As it offers both reminders and a fresh perspective.

Why should you read this book?

Maria Hatzistefanis has a very personal style of writing which is enjoyable. See it as productivity, motivation and inspiration all wrapped up in an honest, tell it as it is approach with interesting personal references thrown in as examples.

Key takeaways:

  • Motivation does not come to you – it will find you working. This book reinforces that and offers a good reminder of how true this is.
  • Examples of frameworks to make your goals tangible and how to work towards them every single day.
  • Each chapter is summarised with a list of concrete actions you can take to implement the learnings from the book into your day to day life.
  • Offers an example of a framework that will help you deal with and process rejection. Something that you need to learn to both face, handle and move on from.
  • Tips on how to structure your day so you both can take care of yourself and reach your goals. No matter if you have your own company or work for someone and want to achieve a certain career trajectory as a key employee.
  • How and why you should get out of your comfort zone if you want to grow and progress both as a person and in your career.
  • What the cost of being the boss really is, honestly.

In closing, I love the introduction thank you of the book, where the author thanks someone and dedicate the book to a special someone. In this case, it is:

“To everyone who ever rejected me, a big thank you for making me the person I am today. “

That’s how you do it! 🙂

Thank you to Ebury Press, who sent me a free copy of How To Make It Happen.

Now I have to be totally honest and say that before I read this I had never heard of Maria Hatzistenfanis or Rodial (the beauty branded Maria founded and is CEO of). The main reason I was drawn to the book was because of the title How To Make It Happen: Turning Failure Into Success. I am all about making this happened and was drawn the idea of seeing how Maria turned failure into success. Also, I had seen on Instagram photographs of her first book How to Be an Overnight Success so I thought if she was publishing her second book then the first one must have been well received.

If you too don’t know much about me don’t worry as right at the beginning of the book Maria gives you an introduction to herself, as well as sharing a behind-the-scenes about the reality of her journey.

Then the book is broken down into 10 chapters:

Chapter 1 – Slay: How to Get Started

Chapter 2 – Be a Goal Digger

Chapter 3 – Nothing Fabulous Happens Inside a Comfort Zone

Chapter 4 – They Want You to Quit. Don’t

Chapter 5 – Don’t Let Anyone Work Harder Than you

Chapter 6 – Your 6am Wake-Up Call to Success

Chapter 7 – Pay the Cost of Being the Boss

Chapter 8 – Dress to Impress. Repeat

Chapter 9 – Zero Motivation? No Problem

Chapter 10 – Ready to Make it Happen? Let’s Do it.

As hopefully, you can see from the titles of the chapters Maria focuses on numerous different concepts that are commonly spoken about in relation to success such as setting goals, motivation, waking up early, breaking through your comfort zone and taking action. On average each chapter is about 12-15 pages. This means you could pick up a copy and read a whole chapter in one sitting. In each chapter, Maria shares her thoughts and experiences (usually including elaborate stories) on a topic and then shares some tips. At the end of each chapter, there will be a section that outlines 10 steps, 10 tips, 10 tools etc so you that you can see how to apply the lessons from the chapter to your own life.

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM CHARELLE

Overall, I didn’t find How to Make It Happen enjoyable or valuable. As I mentioned at the beginning, I had never heard of Maria or Rodial before this book. Throughout the book, Maria gives lots of examples that are related to her life and her business. I don’t particularly enjoy books that have loads of personal examples and because I had no real interest in Maria or her company I found it very hard to relate.

I felt that the book covered lots of concepts that I absolutely agree with, but because each chapter focuses on a different thing the concept was talked about at a very top-level and the majority of tips she provided I had heard of already.

WHO WOULD I RECOMMEND READS HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN

Whilst I didn’t enjoy or find this book useful I can understand that just because a book isn’t for me doesn’t mean it isn’t for others.

As I mentioned I found it hard to relate to Maria, however, if you are someone who is interested in the beauty and/or fashion I imagine you’ll relate more to Maria. Also, Maria is a mum too so for women who are juggling a business and motherhood this may be a book worth checking out. Furthermore, since Maria is talking about success directly in relation to building a business it could be of interest to anyone who is an entrepreneur or aspires to start their own business in the future.

In addition, I think if you liked #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso then you’ll like How To Make It Happen too.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you made a mistake, and it felt like the end of the world? Or have you failed at something you thought was going to be a surefire success? If you have, then you know how frustrating and disheartening it can be. But did you know that failure is not the end, but rather a chance to learn and grow? This is what Maria Hatzistefanis , founder of Rodial and NIP+FAB beauty brands , shares in her book, “ How to Make It Happen: Turning Failure into Success ”. In this book, Hatzistefanis takes readers through her journey of turning setbacks into opportunities and achieving success. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn from their mistakes, grow as a person, and ultimately achieve their goals.

She shares how she faced numerous setbacks in her journey to launching her beauty brands but never gave up. Hatzistefanis encourages readers not to fear failure but to embrace it and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow. She also reminds readers that no one is immune to failure and that it is an essential part of the journey to success.

However, she cautions readers not to take reckless risks. Instead, she shares how to evaluate risks, make informed decisions, and remain resilient when things don’t go as planned. Hatzistefanis also reminds readers to celebrate their successes along the way, no matter how small they may be.

The book’s final section is titled “Winning Ways” and focuses on the importance of networking, building relationships, and giving back. Hatzistefanis shares her insights on how to create a supportive network of people who will help guide you through your journey of success. She emphasizes the value of forming relationships with like-minded individuals who share your values and goals. Hatzistefanis also discusses the importance of giving back to the community and how it can be a rewarding way to enhance your own personal and professional growth.

Conclusion:

Overall, “How to Make It Happen: Turning Failure into Success” is a must-read for business owners , entrepreneurs , and anyone who wants to learn how to turn setbacks into opportunities for growth and success. Through her own personal journey to success, Hatzistefanis shares valuable insights on how to build resilience, take risks, and create a supportive network of people to help you achieve your goals. By embracing failure, evaluating risks, and celebrating success, readers will learn how to turn setbacks into stepping stones to success. This book is witty, fun, and engaging, making it a perfect read for anyone looking to be inspired to achieve their goals.

How to Make Shit Happen- Sean Whalen

Overall rating: 4/5

This book was a super quick and short read. I have just recently started making time to read self-help and self-care books, and picked this one up on a friend’s recommendation. Personally, I really enjoyed the book. In talking to a few people, I think this is one of those books where you’ll either love it or you’ll hate it. Basically, take it at face value. If you want one of those self-help books you can really dive into and analyze – this probably isn’t the one you’re looking for. This book is really straight forward, and the author is really quite blunt. He basically says own up to your problems and to your shit, and do the work needed to overcome them – that’s all there is to it.

That is what I enjoyed about this book, however. Most self-help books I’ve read so far (I haven’t read many in the grand scheme of self-help books), you really have to sit and analyze. You have to really think about, and really digest them. Sean Whalen just tells you what he did to get out of his funk, and tells you his method on, quite frankly, ‘How to Make Shit Happen’. Don’t get me wrong, it is a quick read, (I read it in one sitting), but I still sat there and took tedious notes and marked the crap out of a book. It held some good points worth noting, even in the short (large font) pages.

The message really isn’t sugar coated, and the book did contain some language to get the point across, but I think that kind of helps put things into perspective a little bit. Sometimes sugar coating things isn’t always helpful. Whalen talks about how he uses a method to break life down into four major aspects – CORE 4 – and then goes on to give you steps to reach your goals for each area. Most importantly, do something every day, even if it’s small, that address these four key aspects of your life- which are Power, Passion, Purpose, and Production. Power refers to body(health), passion as in your relationships, purpose refers to your mind, and production refers to business (maybe school, work, or something of that nature). Whalen talks about how everything you do, daily, fits in these categories and you can plan your day with those aspects of life in mind, and contribute to them daily, and watch yourself reach bigger goals in the long run. He doesn’t sell these huge life changing plans and goal setting techniques, but is a firm believer of planning out your day the night before, having a ‘morning’ ritual, and refers to this CORE4 idea. He says if you make you are taking care of these important life aspects you will create an overall better life for yourself and never be afraid to seek out help when needed. Create daily habits, and take immediate action.

Overall, it really isn’t your typical self-help book. No self-help book really is a perfect, cure everything, best advice out there book. It really is all your opinion, bias, and your views that play into each one, as you read them. You are going to get what you want out of it, honestly. There are some grammatical errors throughout the book (it is self-published, fyi), and some may find that the information presented is quite obvious, don’t like the author’s fuck off approach, and feel it is not worth the read. Personally, I found it to the point, a refresher from the typical self-help/advice book, plus there was some humor in it, and I really found CORE 4 very helpful. I think it’s a 4 out of 5, and do recommend reading the book. It’s only about 80 pages after all; that only takes an hour of your time, and you may love it! I did. (Plus, it’s cheap!)
