My tween loves playing this game with his friends. They blindfold one person and raid the cupboards to find items for them to taste. Things like honey, soy sauce, mustard, frozen pea, marshmallow etc. all work well.

The blindfolded person must try and guess what they have been given to taste. Make sure you check for food allergies before playing this game. And it is probably best to supervise the food choices!

#2. He Said She Said

A fun way to get the kids’ imaginations going.

Each person gets a piece of paper and a pen/pencil. They write the first few lines of a story, fold the page until the last line or last few words of the previous person’s story is only visible, and pass the paper over the to next person, who writes the next few lines, and so on until the page comes back to the original author.

Since each child cannot see all of the previous person’s story, they must write their lines based on one sentence/word. The resulting mixed-up stories will invariably bring much laughter.

• Everyone except the murderer, must stand still. Only the murderer can quietly move away, if they choose too.
• The detective enters the room 5 seconds after the scream and turns on the lights.The detective looks at the victim and starts to question everyone in order to identify the murderer. Only the murderer can tell a lie. Everyone else MUST tell the truth.
• Once the detective has decided who they think the murderer is they must touch the accused murderer on the shoulder and announce I am arresting you for the murder of John Smith (name the victim).
• If the detective is right then the murderer can confess. If the detective is wrong then the true murderer can reveal themselves.

Set up in teams to build a bridge out of straws that is strong enough to hold 100 pennies. Or build a bridge out of popsicle sticks and other materials.

#7. Paper Aeroplane Race

All you need to make paper aeroplanes is paper and pens for decorating.

First fold your paper aeroplane and then the kids can draw the pilots at the front and the passengers looking out of the windows. Have Paper Aeroplane races and see whose gets furthest.

#8. Sock Wars

For this game you will need 10-20 socks rolled up into balls:

• Divide the room into two equal halves, and place the socks on the line in the middle (you could use masking tape to mark). Divide all the kids into two equal teams.
• When the game starts, the object of the game is to get as many socks onto the other teams side of the room before time is up.
• Team members must stay on their side of the room and toss the socks over to the other sides.
• A team member cannot hold onto a sock for more than 10 seconds before having to throw it.
• You could also add in beach balls of varying sizes with the socks, for variety.

#9. Flying Carpet

Each child, or group of children, stands on a rug or cushion in the middle of the floor. This is their ‘flying carpet’ the only problem is, it is upside down! The object of this game is to turn the ‘flying carpet’ over without stepping off it. If you step on the floor you are out!

Similar to Murder in the Dark, but with a winking murderer.

• Sit all the children in a circle and get them to close their eyes.
• Pick one player, or 2 if you have a really large group, to be the murderer, by touching them on their shoulder.
• Then get everyone to open their eyes and pick a detective.
• The ‘murderer’ must catch another players eye and wink quickly at them. If you are winked at you die, in a really dramatic fashion of course!
• The detective must try and guess who the murderer is.
• The murderer keeps winking at people until they are all out or they have been caught.

#11. Two Truths and a Lie

Creative indoor games for kids, that don’t require any props of equipment, are always a good idea. To play this game, each person shares three statements, one of which is false and two of which are true. Everyone else has to guess which is the lie.

#12. Balloon Ping-Pong

All you need is some balloons and either table-tennis bats, or make your own bats using paper plates and sticks for handles.

Clear some space in the hall and off they go.

#13. Geography Game

The first person starts with a geographic place name and the next person has to think of a place name that starts with the last letter of the previous place.

#15. Indoor Obstacle Course (with a twist)

Set up some obstacles in the room. Blindfold one player and the rest of the players must lead them through the obstacle course by telling them the way to go. Left to avoid a chair, right 2 steps to avoid a table. etc.

For bigger groups, split them into pairs and let each playing take a turn at leading and navigating.

Sardines gives a twist to the classic game of hide and seek. Instead of one person seeking and everyone else hiding, one person hides and everyone else seeks.

Once one of the seekers finds the person hiding, they must hide with that person. This continues until there is only one person left seeking, and everyone else is crammed together like sardines in the hiding place. The last person to find everyone else now becomes the new hider for the next round.

Have a go at making up limericks, a limerick has five lines; the first, second, and fifth rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth rhyme with each other. Give the kids a theme, or first line to get them going.

Using marshmallows and wooden skewers or uncooked spaghetti see who can build the highest stack. You may need a few packets of marshmallows for this game as, if they build it well, they may be able to join several skewers together. To win, the stacks must stay up without help!

#21. Chinese Whispers

Kids get such a kick from this, and works well for all ages – the more kids you have for this, the better.

Sit the kids in a circle, and you tell the first child a sentence of sufficient length, which they then whisper into the next child’s ear and so on. See how much the sentence has changed by the time it comes back to the start.

#22. Stop the Bus

• Each person has a piece of paper and draws on columns for these headings Girls Name, Boys Name, Animal, Food/Drink, Place.
• One person says the alphabet silently in their head, then another says “Stop the Bus” and that letter is the initial for the words in each category. e.g. Say the letter is D –  Categories could be Dora, David, Dog, Dates, Denmark.
• When everyone has finished you add up their scores for that round, awarding 10 points for a unique answer (one no one else has), and 5 points for a duplicate answer.
• You can come up with new categories as well to play against.

#23. Try to Skip 100 Times Without Stopping

Get the skipping rope out and have a go at skipping 100 times without stopping. Manage that? Aim for 200 now. Check what the world record is for the most skips in 1 minute  – can you beat it?!

Creative freedom and self-direction isn't all that the game lends its players, according to iD Tech . Minecraft teaches teamwork and the motivation to improve reading and math skills. To get better at the game, parents told iD Tech that their kids started reading about biomes and calculating rations for adventures, dividing supplies and how many minutes until "night" in the game. Minecraft's educational benefits have also been packaged for the classroom .

The Oregon Trail

Are you tough enough to survive blizzards, disease and snake bites in the retro "Oregon Trail" game?

The Oregon Trail came onto the scene in the '70s and has gone through quite a few changes since then. My 10-year-old self spent many an afternoon trying to get my digital wagon 2,000 miles west to safety. Before you start the trip, you pick a job (each has its own unique benefits), name your companions and purchase supplies. 

Recent updates to the game let you trade, upgrade your wagon and buy food and medicine to increase your group's chances of survival. Along the trip, your group encounters illness, obstructive rivers, highway bandits, food constraints and other complications of the time. Though the situations are a bit dramatic, players learn fast about pre-planning and making choices with the long term in mind.

I played (and described above) the 5th edition of the game, which you can order on Amazon. If you want a newer mobile experience, you can try The Oregon Trail: American Settler for iOS or The Oregon Trail from Gameloft on Apple Arcade .

Wordscapes is a fun brainteaser game

Fans of Words with Friends and Scrabble (the app or the board game) may be drawn to Wordscapes, which allows kids to learn new words and practice logic skills. You get unlimited tries to solve crossword-style puzzles using only a handful of letters (with few free hints). The app challenges you on some levels by prohibiting three-letter words and offering daily puzzles that challenge you to guess all the words in a certain order. Wordscapes has a built-in dictionary that makes it easy for kids to add to their vocabularies. You can play on Android and iOS . 

The Little Big Planet series

What your kids will learn: logic, spatial orientation skills, design and problem solving

The Little Big Planet series.

This spunky little game follows the adventures of Sackboy and his friends. The first two games are mostly platform-jumping and avoiding obstacles to make it to the next level. Players can also create their own levels, customize characters or build complex contraptions in a level. Finally, players have the option to share their creations in the PlayStation Network.

The first game, Little Big Planet, was released in 2008  and the creators have released several entries since. Little Big Planet 3 is the newest installment , which introduced three new characters: Toggle, Swoop and Oddsock. The games are available on PSP, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3. Portal series

What your kids will learn:  logic, problem-solving, physics, math, science and spatial skills

Even though this mind-bending puzzle game has been out since 2012, it still feels fresh and inventive. 

Portal is along the lines of Little Big Planet, but it's a bit more mature. The first Portal got a Teen rating for the inclusion of some bloodstains, but Portal 2 is rated E. The games might be a bit scary or difficult for players under 9 , Common Sense Media suggests.

Portal places players in a secret research facility who is led through a series of dangerous tests by a humorously narcissistic AI called GLaDOS. The puzzles are solved by creating an entry portal in a wall, creating an exit portal somewhere else and walking through. Players advance by learning how to manipulate physics and spatial constraints. Just try not to fall forever. Portal and Portal 2 are available on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. 

Kerbal Space Program

What your kids will learn : physics, the solar system, mathematics and basic aerospace engineering

Kerbal Space Program is a lot more than just cute aliens. 

Your kids don't have to play in a cardboard box in the yard if they want to be an astronaut. This rocket simulation game focuses on a space program for an alien race called the Kerbals. When you start a game, you'll be tasked with building a rocket that either works or doesn't work, based on " realistic aerodynamic and orbital physics ." Once you get your Kerbals into space, you can explore the solar system, build bases and construct space stations. The game got a lot of attention from NASA and the B612 Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to planetary science and planetary defense. 

The game has three modes -- Science, Career and Sandbox. Science mode lets players unlock new tech and advance the Kerbals; Career mode has players oversee every aspect of the Kerbal's space program; and Sandbox mode is more freeform play. Kerbal Space Program and its expansions -- Breaking Ground and Making History -- are available for PC and console.

What your kids will learn: trigonometry in its basest form, angles and critical thinking

Eloh is such an addicting, yet satisfying game.

This app is another example of teaching your kids without them knowing they're being taught. Eloh is a visually beautiful musical puzzle game that teases your brain without stressing you out. Each level features island spirits that you can move. Once you get them into the right spot, tap the red speaker and music will start. The goal is to bounce the "sound waves" off the spirits and hit the spiral icon. It's kind of like banking a shot in billiards. 

The levels get progressively more challenging, but there's no timer, ads or in-app purchases. The app costs $3 to download on Android or iOS . 

What your kids will learn: logic, patterns, data analysis and problem-solving skills

Zoombinis was a game I frequently played after school growing up.

If you grew up in the '90s, you might remember this game. Zoombinis kept me busy many an afternoon. In the game, you must guide the little blue critters out of the evil Bloats' clutches and home to Zoombiniville. Each of the 12 levels such as Allergic Cliffs, Stone Cold Caves and Pizza Pass get progressively more challenging, with kids using logic and pattern identification to win. Play on iOS , Android or PC. 

Where on Google Earth is Carmen Sandiego?

What your kids will learn: geography, the locations of historic events and other geographical facts.

Carmen Sandiego is globe-trotting on Google Maps. 

Google Earth and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Carmen Sandiego games -- The Crown Jewels Caper , The Tutankhamun's Mask Caper and The Keys to the Kremlin -- offer something new while paying homage to the original franchise. Players use the magnifying glass to interview witnesses in different cities and gather clues, learning about geography and history along the way. When you think you've figured out the next step, click the airplane icon to fly to the next city and continue unraveling the mystery. You can play on web browser , Android or iOS . 

Nancy Drew Interactive Mysteries

What your kids will learn:  historical events and important figures, critical thinking, foreign cultures, languages and customs, problem-solving skills and more

The Nancy Drew interactive mystery series is probably my favorite game franchise of all time. 

I will shamelessly say that I have played these games since they started making them in 1998 . Some are based on Nancy Drew books (The Secret of the Old Clock game, for instance, is based on the first four books in the series) while others are original mysteries. 

The point-and-click games let you play as Nancy, solving a mystery as the amateur detective would. Whether you play as a junior or senior detective, you'll question suspects, solve puzzles, discover clues and find your way out of multiple sticky situations to catch the culprit. 

The beauty of these games is that they teach kids without them knowing it. At 9 years old, I knew a ridiculous amount about the Mayan civilization after playing Secret of the Scarlet Hand, as well as the key players in the French Revolution after playing Treasure in the Royal Tower. There are 33 games to date for PC, mobile and certain gaming consoles.

Democracy series

What your kids will learn:  multiple layers of government functions like parties, funding, taxes, elections, policy changes, political capital, budgets, debts and more. In addition, they'll learn about compromise, cause and effect, strategy and conflict resolution.

Can you run a country? 

Has your kid ever wanted to be in politics? Now they can try their hand at it with the Democracy game series. In this government simulation game, you play as the president or prime minister of a democratic government and alter policies in the areas of tax, economy, welfare, foreign policy, transport, law and order and public services. The catch, like in real life, is that each policy affects other factors like voter happiness, crime rates and air quality, for example. Players also have to deal with situations like homelessness or protests and make decisions accordingly. 

You can play Democracy, Democracy 2, Democracy 3 and Democracy 4 on PC.

National Geographic Challenge

What your kids will learn: historical figures and events, geography and more

Trivia fans, anyone?

The National Geographic Challenge is a quiz game that lives up to the "challenge" part of its name. There's no shortage of questions that range from easy to hard and are divided into regions -- North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Australia. Start a game for up to four players and choose an avatar. You can try to answer 40, 60 or 80 of the game's timed questions. The games are complemented by impressive photography and video from the National Geographic archive.

The National Geographic Challenge will test kids' knowledge with questions like: In what year did Madagascar gain independence from France? In which country does the River Niger reach the sea? The game is available on Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3. 

World Rescue

What your kids will learn: geography, conservation and sustainability, global problems, healthy living and activism

World Rescue is one of the games offered by the institute. 

World Rescue was developed by ZU Digital with the help of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Think of it as a 21st century Captain Planet, minus the superpowers. The game's levels are set in Kenya, Norway, Brazil, India and China. There, you'll help five heroes solve problems like displacement, disease, deforestation, drought and pollution, giving kids lessons on real-world issues. You can play World Rescue on Android or iOS .

Best games for 10-15 year old kids on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch (that don’t suck)

Let’s get straight down to it: I’ve rounded up 10 of the best games for 10-15 year olds. None of them are M-rated (meaning there’s no blood and guts to worry about, however fun disemboweling enemies might be), and each one has some decent lessons to teach, from patience to contemplating human mortality. Oh, and one has you escorting a talking potato clock around. Because the games you own says a lot about you, and chatting to a talking potato clock is a great ice-breaker. So when you’re pondering what to buy someone who’s not quite old enough to play games where you use someone’s decapitated head as a football, you want to make sure they get something that can be looked back on fondly. Here’s our suggestions for what’s worth your hard-earned cash!

Cuphead 

Play it on: Xbox One, PC ESRB rating: E (Everyone) 10+ - Fantasy violence, mild language, use of alcohol and tobacco Best for someone who: Likes old-school platformers like Mario, enjoys challenging themselves...and doesn’t mind trying the same level over and over and over until they get it perfect.

Fit for all ages, Cuphead is a platformer inspired by retro cartoons of old like Steamboat Willie and Betty Boop. It’s also a great lesson in patience. Because you’ll be dying quite a bit to begin with. Yet Cuphead is undeniably fair, rewarding perseverance with its uncompromising tests of jumpin’ and shootin’ skill that take you from woodlands to casinos to theatre matinees. All the animations are hand-drawn, with unforgettable boss fights headed by grinning sunflowers and melodramatic dancers that warp and stretch into slightly nightmarish monsters the closer you get to killing them. Spending hours mastering the ability to avoid the fickle attack patterns of higher-level baddies is all worth it for that hallowed ‘KNOCKOUT!’ screen. It’ll practically become an aphrodisiac by the end of your playthrough. Plus it’s co-op, so you can tackle its levels with a buddy on those rainy afternoons.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Play it on: PS4 ESRB rating: T (Teen) 13+ - Alcohol and tobacco reference, blood, mild language, mild sexual themes, violence Best for someone who: Likes openworld games with fighting and shooting, science-fiction, anything to do with robots, and has a burning curiosity.

Do you stare at all manner of machines and wonder how the hell they work? Is that a yes I hear? Then you’ll love Horizon: Zero Dawn . As the indomitable outcast Aloy, you hunt animal-like robots with bows and arrows as you try to figure out what destroyed the technologically-advanced civilisation that came before and face up against the enigmatic threat that’s corrupting the usually docile machines. The colossally-big world will have you aimlessly exploring for hours and using its photo mode to capture the exquisite scenery. It does explore mature themes like birth parents, slavery, the apocalypse and extinction, so it’ll definitely provoke some thoughtful questions. But also, y’know: robots. Deadly robots. Deadly giant T-Rex robots. Need I say more?

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 

Play it on: Nintendo Switch ESRB rating: E (Everyone) 10+ - Fantasy violence, mild suggestive themes, use of alcohol Best for someone who: Likes openworld adventure games where they can do what they want and is happiest when they’re doing their own thing (and isn’t particularly fond of rules).

Anyone who just can’t stay still is sure to find a kindred spirit in Link, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ’s main character. Almost straight from the beginning you can go almost anywhere in the entire game, and it’s up to you whether you take on mountains of quests, head directly for the most difficult enemy in the game, or just wander around the stunning landscape with a bow in hand to see what you can find to cook. Yes, cook . It’s not all fighting and exploring, though: scattered throughout the mind-bogglingly big world are puzzles that’ll put you to the test, characters that you aren’t likely to forget in a hurry (including a giant parrot who plays the accordion), and secret locations that’ll surprise you even after you’ve being playing for hours upon hours and no matter what age you are.

Play it on: Xbox One, PC ESRB rating: Not yet rated (likely T - Teen, 13+) Best for someone who: Likes story-heavy games, preferring enthralling plot to fighting - especially if they’re to do with space. 

A mysterious explosion has cut off all contact to a space station. Not the most optimistic start to a videogame, true, but what it does mean is that you’re left alone to explore Tacoma ’s eerily empty rooms and corridors to piece together exactly what happened to the missing crew. There’s no fighting in Tacoma, yet there’s a decidingly eerie undercurrent that’ll make you want to open every locker and replay every recording by the surveillance system just to make sure you didn’t miss a single thing. At the heart of Tacoma is the mystery of the absent crew, yet it’s interwoven with deeply heartfelt personal stories and mature revelations that younger kids might not fully understand. 

Stardew Valley

Play it on: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch ESRB rating: E (Everyone) 10+ - Fantasy violence, mild blood, mild language, simulated gambling, use of alcohol and tobacco Best for someone who: Prefers farming simulators to anything to do with guns and enjoys calm, pleasantly-repetitive routines that take place in a charming world.

If there was one word to describe Stardew Valley , it would be ‘wholesome’. Overwhelmingly wholesome, in fact. Underneath this world of rosy-cheeked farmers and mysterious forest magic is a exquisitely-structured progression system where, over time, your farm turns from a dilapidated ruin into a thriving homestead. As a rosy-cheeked farmer yourself, you get to choose to grow fruit, vegetables, or even own your very own livestock that you’ll name, feed, and get surprisingly attached to. Shear sheep, milk cows, harvest your ripe produce and sell it all to buy bigger and better farming devices until your farm is the envy of Old MacDonald ee-ii-ee-ii-oo himself. Before you know it you’ll be rolling in gold no matter what age you are, but farming isn’t all there is to it. If you’d prefer, you can spend your days chatting to villagers and growing your friendships in an equally wholesome manner, or tackling the deadly caves to fight the monsters within. 

What Remains of Edith Finch

Play it on: PS4, Xbox One, PC ESRB rating: T (Teen) 13+ - Blood, drug reference, language, violence Best for someone who: Likes story-based games that don’t hold back on feelings, and isn’t afraid to ask questions about the most difficult experiences life has to offer.

I’m going to say this straight away: there’s a lot of death in What Remains of Edith Finch . Yet none of it is bloody, gruesome, or gratuitous, and there’s zero violence. Instead this game tells the story of the only surviving member of the Finch family, Edith, and her return to her sprawling family home. All her relations have died in odd circumstances, with their rooms boarded up after each loss. It might sound morbid, but the game is actually an exploration of grief and acceptance. Celebrating life is at the centre of What Remains of Edith Finch as you play sections as some of the family members Edith has lost, find secret passages into rooms hidden in the house, and get the answers to questions Edith’s mother has long been hiding from her. If you don’t find yourself shedding a single tear during your playthrough, you should check yourself into the doctor with Severe Robot Emotion Syndrome. Because it’s mainly about loss, grief, and acceptance, it’ll almost definitely lead to some questions about life in general. Which is most certainly a good thing…you just might want to prepare some answers beforehand.

Play it on: PS4, Xbox One, PC ESRB rating: E (Everyone) 10+ - Fantasy violence, mild language Best for someone who: Likes puzzle games, and refuses to be beaten (i.e. they’re stubborn. Tenaciously stubborn).

Portal 2 is one of the best games to ever exist. That’s just a fact. Filled with devious puzzles, wickedly clever writing, and a villain that has enough layers hidden under their deadly wit to keep you guessing for hours about whether you adore or despise them, this game is perfect for any age. Based on the premise that you wake up in a scientific lab as a test subject, you have to traverse testing rooms using portals. Step into one, appear in the other. A simple premise, but boy does it get deliciously complicated the further on you get. Those who find themselves drawn irresistibly to crosswords, riddles, or M.C. Escher will probably think that Portal 2 was made for them, but there’s more to it than just puzzles. Woven into all the portal-related acrobatics are wisecracks, unpredictable AIs, and a quickly-deteriorating underground laboratory that you’re trying to escape. In no time you’ll be thinking with portals.

Night in the Woods

Play it on: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Android, iOS ESRB rating: T (Teen) 13+ - Fantasy violence, mild blood, sexual themes, drug reference, language, crude humor, use of alcohol and tobacco Best for someone who: Likes story-driven games that are a little unusual and can’t get enough of hearing what their friends have been up to 

Mae is a drop-out. However alienating college was, coming back home to Possum Springs isn’t exactly what she imagined it to be. Friends have changed, nothing is quite the same, and there’s something very odd happening in the woods. Dealing with the everyday concerns of millenials including the not-so-optimistic state of the job market, the temptation to undermine your boss, and general existential crises, Night in the Woods is best for older kids thanks to its deadpan humour and the occasional (non-bloody) knife fighting mini-game. You’ll spend your time exploring Possum Springs, reconnecting with old friends, and unravelling exactly what’s happened during Mae’s absence. Trust me on this: nothing is simple in Possum Springs. Especially not in those mysterious nearby woods...

Ratchet and Clank

Play it on: PS4 ESRB rating: Not yet rated (likely E - Everyone 10+) Best for someone who: Likes adventure games, fidgets like crazy with an almost unhealthy adoration for cartoonish violence 

Anyone who likes to keep their garage nice and tidy might go a bit haywire at the sight of the nuts and bolts strewn throughout Ratchet and Clank , but you just wait until they see how it feels to hoover up every single one in sight. So satisfying. This action-adventure game is stuffed with ridiculously over-the-top weapons, used by the wisecracking mechanic Ratchet whose only wish is to be a Galactic Ranger and save people from various threats to the galaxy. Now isn’t that wholesome? Teaming up with the naive robot Clank, the two jump, shoot, and swing their way through the Pixar -ish futuristic world and is perfect for any age. Expect yourself to be inadvertently quoting the duo in no time. They’re quite the masters of deadpan humour.

Tearaway Unfolded

Play it on: PS4 ESRB rating: E (Everyone) 10+ - Mild cartoonish violence Best for someone who: Likes platforming adventure games and wants an easy, carefree way to while away their weekends or lazy afternoons (and has a love of anything paper) 

Games don’t come much more heart-warming than Tearaway Unfolded . Everything is made out of paper, ripped lovingly into twee shapes that dance across the screen as if they’re animated with pure joy instead of lots of lines of code, this adventure platformer is the equivalent of the cosiest, softest blanket you’ve ever touched and that you can’t wait to wrap up warm in. Frolicking across the cardboard countryside, you’re a messenger who has to deliver a letter to something called The You (psst - that’s literally you, the player) through a portal that’s opened in the sky. Along the way there’s minigames to play, theatre productions to take part in, and delightful accessories to add to your character in the form of paper ornaments. In case you haven’t realised it from the literal sunshine beaming out of these words, Tearaway Unfolded is suitable for anyone and should be played by everyone.

Tablets are a regular part of most kids’ routines these days, and teachers and parents can use that to their advantage. There are a lot of terrific iPad games for kids that are designed for learning but disguised as fun! Here are some of the best that cover reading, math, science, social studies, and more for kids of a variety of ages.

Free iPad Games for Kids

The earlier kids start to learn new languages, the better. When we’re young, our brains are more receptive to learning language in general. Duolingo no longer has a specific version just for kids (though they do have a reading program; see below). But the general app itself is still great for kids by upper elementary or so. It’s completely free, and offers more than 40 languages to explore. Teachers should check out Duolingo for Schools , too.

Duolingo ABC

Ages: Pre-K to Grade 1

The foreign language learning company has brought its same philosophy to teaching kids how to read. The entirely free lessons focus on phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, and reading comprehension, all the skills emergent readers need. The lessons increase in difficulty as children progress, with tailored reviews to help kids strengthen skills they struggle with. It’s aligned with Common Core standards too.

PBS Kids Games

Ages: Pre-K to Grade 2

You know you can trust PBS to provide safe, fun, and educational iPad games for kids. Their collection features stars from popular shows like Daniel Tiger and the Wild Kratts, with hundreds of games on just about every subject. iCivics Games

Bedtime Math

Ages: Pre-K to Grade 3

Bedtime stories are a longstanding tradition, but what about bedtime math? That’s what this free app, along with its accompanying books , aims to do. Each day, the app adds a new fun math problem for parents and kids to do together. (Teachers could also use them as daily problems in the classroom.) Each math problem has three levels of difficulty, and many offer challenge questions too.

Little Alchemy 2

Ages: K to 12

Starting with just a few basic elements (air, earth, fire, and water), players mix these to create dozens of new items, both real and imaginary. For instance, mix water and earth to get clay, then mix clay and fire to make bricks, add brick to brick to build a wall, and so on. This robust free game is completely engrossing, and it encourages both creativity and logical thinking.

World Geography Quiz Game

Ages: Grades 3 to 12

This isn’t one of those iPad games for kids full of animated characters and flashy graphics. It’s a straight-up geography quiz game and a very good one. Kids who are into maps and globes will enjoy checking their knowledge of flags, capital cities, statistics, and much more. The game is free to download and play; you have the option to buy “hints,” but they’re not necessary to enjoy the fun.

Sushi Monster

Ages: Grades 2 to 6

Looking for a fun way to practice math facts? Check out this free app! Sushi Monster is hungry. Feed him the sushi plates to make the correct goal number and practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Lyrical Letters

Ages: Pre-K to Grade 12

Combine music with spelling and vocabulary in this charming game, enjoyable for anyone at any age. Listen to the sequence of notes, then play them back to spell the right word. Whether you’ve got antsy kids at home or in the classroom, a good board game can keep the little ones entertained for hours — not to mention help strengthen their critical-thinking skills. So while we’ve written before about all sorts of games and activities in the past — including the best four-player board games , two-player board games , and board games for adults — here, we’ve rounded up the 21 best board games for kids.

Best strategy board game for kids

Ticket to Ride is an adventure-style game in which players attempt to cross the country and connect cities by building train routes. Suitable for ages 8 and up, it is easy to pick up “but also offers a level of strategy and tactics just deep enough for competitive gamers to return to time and again,” says Ian Ross, who runs the popular Instagram page Board Games As Art .

Best pick-and-pass-style card game for kids

For a lightning-quick, pick-and-pass-style card game, Lauren Bilanko, a co-owner of Twenty Sided Store , suggests Sushi Go! , which she says is very easy to learn but still fun enough to play over and over again. The gameplay is simple: collect cards to create collections of dishes for different point values, and whoever scores the most points wins.

Best farming-style board game for kids

Illustrator Stephen Walsh told us about this “really sweet” game about competitive panda husbandry that’s a favorite of his kids. It asks players to cultivate land plots and grow three species of bamboo for pandas. Walsh describes it as the “perfect Christmas Day game” to break out when you want something family-friendly and cheerful. The game takes about 45 minutes to play and is suitable for ages 8 and up.

Best building-focused board game for kids

Most ’90s kids will remember this classic, which is suitable for children ages 4 and up and can accommodate two to four players. “Nothing could beat being a kid and unboxing this game to build a wacky Rube Goldberg machine,” says board-game designer Rob Sparks .

Best family-friendly word-association board game

In our roundup of the best board games to break out during parties, five of our experts praised Just One . “Hands down, Just One is our favorite new party game,” says Kelsey Demers, who runs the board-game blog the Tabletop Family . “It’s simple to play, a breeze to teach, and utterly addictive.” The game won the prestigious 2019 Spiel des Jahres, or German Game of the Year, which evaluates board games based on their game concept, rule structure, layout, and design. The main objective, as the title suggests, is for players to help their teammates guess a word by suggesting “just one” word as a hint. Which sounds easy enough, but, as Matthews warns, “Watch out, duplicate words cancel each other out,” so you need to be creative. A right answer scores your team one point, while a wrong answer docks two points, with the ultimate goal being to get as many points out of 13 as possible. This game takes about 20 minutes to play and is suitable for up to seven players.

Best storytelling board game for kids

Walsh describes Dixit as “a great icebreaker of a game, fantastic for getting everyone interacting.” Great for kids with strong imaginations, it begins with one player being designated the storyteller; that player makes up a sentence based on the image on one of the cards in their hand. Then each player selects the card in their hand that best matches the sentence and gives it to the storyteller. The storyteller shuffles the cards and presents them to the other players, who place bets on which is the original card with the winners gaining points for correct guesses. As an added bonus, “the card artwork is beautiful, imaginative, and sometimes a little surreal,” Walsh says.

Best bingo-style board game for kids

Recommended by longtime Manhattan nanny Kasia Dabrowska, this bingo-esque game is easy to teach kids because the name of the game is speed-spotting familiar items like a dog, bird, or baseball bat. Strategist contributor and father of two Steven John also keeps it in rotation with his family.

Best whodunit-style board game for kids

“ Outfoxed has more replay value than I have ever experienced in a child’s board game,” says John. For months after first getting the game, his then-5-and-a-half-year-old requested a round nearly every single day, he adds. A classic whodunit, the game’s kids discover a series of clues and a group of suspects, zeroing in on the guilty fox through a process of elimination.

Best nostalgic board game for kids

Similar to Mousetrap , Operation was beloved by ’90s kids. Walsh told us that while he loved this game when he was young, he also enjoyed playing it when he was older with his friends after a night out. The whole family can sit down and operate on Cavity Sam to remove his various ailments — including his wishbone, charley horse, and Adam’s apple — without setting off the buzzer.

Best balancing board game for kids

For kids who love to build things, this game asks players to build a shifting tower by adding pieces. The game can accommodate up to four players, which encourages socialization and “very important” peer interaction, explains child therapist Glenda Stoller, co-founder of Village Parenting NYC .

Best board game kids can play with friends

Colleen Russo Johnson , a children’s-tech and media expert, recommends this remix of the original Connect 4 game, which requires a bit more strategy. In addition to placing their pieces in a slot, players must spin the corresponding column, which keeps gameplay interesting.

Best card-slash-board game for kids

“I was really surprised at how it held up,” says clinical child psychologist George Sachs . Fourth-grade teacher Courtney Caulfield adds that the kids in her class also love the throwback. “They like it because they can play with friends,” she says. “And it usually makes them think.”

Best active board game for kids

Anya Kamenetz , mother of two and author of The Art of Screen Time , recommends the fast-paced Exploding Kittens game Throw Throw Burrito , “which is a fun combination of goofiness and actual strategy.” Gameplay is only 15 minutes and can accommodate two to six players. Toy blogger and reviewer Lori Jepsen of Toysenberry is also a fan. “ “I mean, what’s not to love about throwing burritos at your siblings or parents or spouse?”

Best party game for kids

According to Strategist contributor and dad David Pogue , “this is the greatest game ” that all ages can play. The rules of this spy-themed favorite are very similar to the basic elements of charades, with players dividing into two teams with one designated spymaster, who provides clues. By guessing the words correctly, players unveil the other teams’ agents. The first to unmask all of its opponents’ spies wins. Pogue calls it “truly hilarious and satisfying,” and though the designer has it labeled for kids 10 and up, Pogue notes that “ Codenames is super-fun with younger kids because they make fantastically imaginative connections between the words.”

Best board game for kids who like breaking rules

This edition of Monopoly is designed for cheaters: The goal is to see how many rules you can bend or break in order to win. “Isn’t that the way every kid plays all the time anyway?” says Zibby Owens, mother of four and host of Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books . The game “encourages secret bank thefts, secret property swipes, and serious consequences if caught,” Owens adds.

Best fast-paced game for kids

Ideal for kids ages 10 and up, this fast-paced board game’s main objective is to be the first to help all of your aliens escape into outer space via drone. Suitable for two to four players, “it’s the first game I’ve ever seen with a real flying drone,” says Adrienne Appell of the Toy Association , who recommends it because it “combines different kinds of play for a lot of fun.”

Best planning board game for kids

This farm-animal-themed board game “challenges kids to really think about each move,” says NAPPA Awards director Elena Epstein. The game’s main objective had kids create a layout for a series of cows, pigs, and other farm animals that must be kept separated using a limited number of fences, which tests a child’s logic, spatial reasoning, and planning skills. “Kids feel a lot of pride as they figure out each level,” Epstein says.

Best tic-tac-toe–inspired board game

This tic-tac-toe inspired board game is “visually appealing” and “complex,” according to Sophia W., a nanny for the New York–based SmartSitting agency. Even better, Sophia says, “It’s well suited for gifted and special-needs children, as the colors stimulate kids who think visually.”

Best 3-D board game for kids

This 3-D Tetris game, recommended by Ali Mierzejewski, the editor-in-chief of the Toy Insider, works much like the original version of the game except you’re competing against other players using one pot of physical pieces. “You have to be strategic about what pieces you need and try to predict what the other players will need while playing. It’s a really fun way to update the classic video game,” she says.

How to Know If Games Are Age-Appropriate

One of the most important factors to consider when buying video games for your child is the age-appropriateness of the game. Video games are rated by the ESRB, which gives parents and caregivers an idea of a game’s appropriate age level usage. The ESRB has six main categories when it comes to ratings.

• E: This level rating means “Everyone,” so the content is typically suitable for all ages. There may be mild language or mild violence depending on the game. 
• E 10+: Meant for “Everyone 10+,” children from 10 years old and up can play the content in video games with this rating. It’s once again possible there will be fantasy, cartoon, mild language or violence, or suggestive themes. 
• T: Standing for “Teen,” this content is usually OK for children ages 13 years old and up. However, language is typically stronger, and there may be more crude humor, gambling, or violence depending on the video game. 
• M: “Mature 17+” is for those 17 years old and older due to content possibly containing blood/gore, sexual content, strong language, and intense violence. 
• A: This rating is for “Adults 18+” because the content is not suitable for children at all. Video games with this rating may contain gambling with real money, graphic sexual content, or long moments with intense violence. 
• RP: RP stands for “Rating Pending,” meaning video games with this rating have not yet been assigned a final ESRB rating. 

What to Look for When Buying Video Games for Kids 

• System Type: Because video games aren’t a “one-game-fits-all” when it comes to systems, you want to ensure the video games you’re looking at are compatible with your child’s system. Some of the more popular ones you’ve probably heard of include PlayStation, Xbox, PC games, or mobile games. Typically, you will see a description of which system the video game is compatible with on the packaging. Other cues to look for: XBOX is known for their green cases while PlayStation will show a “PS4” with the number being the console it matches to. 
• Cost: Many parents and caregivers may be shocked to see some of the most popular video games will cost more than $50, but this will depend on what type of system your child has. Consider the cost of the video game your child has had their eye on or what you think they may like. Some games may be on the cheaper end, but require extra costs once playing for additional features. Do your research on a video game to see exactly where your money (or your child’s!) money is exactly going.
